COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

W

hy is Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a neck-and-neck runoff for re-election? He enjoys national press attention, advertises the endorsement of hometown favorite President Obama, brandishes a $30 million-plus campaign war chest, largely funded by 100 or so major donors, and mobilizes wall-to-wall advertising and a professional campaign team. Yet he has not only been forced into a run-off, but polls show him still unable to win majority support. Like any Chicago mayor, Emanuel gets his share of brickbats and insults. He’s said to be insulting and profane, but Chicago prides itself on its feisty politicians. He’s tied to downtown interests, but, with the exception of Harold Washington, that has ever been true. The reason Emanuel is in trouble is a widespread loss of faith across

POLITICAL By Burt

issouri City, noted in business publications throughout the country as America’s most racially ethnically diverse city particularly for young and independent African American women, has seen an increase in the last couple of years in turnout in elections from those women. This year that political phenomenon is being driven for May 9th council races. Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen, proud of his more than 20 years as mayor, mentions often his pride in living and leading a city that today is being sought after by “folks from every background and belief seeking better communities, neighborhoods and homes in this country and from throughout the world.” Missouri City’s African American percentage now hovers in the mid-40’s particularly on sides closest to Houston where the council districts African American percentages are in the mid-60s. As a whole Missouri City’s white population as a whole now dips to the low 20s with Asian and Hispanic populations growing from around 30 percent now. Two years ago Yolanda Ford, 41, with a Masters of Architecture from

4

the city’s black and Latino neighborhoods. Faith, the Bible tells us, is the “substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is what sustains hope in political leaders even when times are bad. Faith is what makes voters believe that a leader feels their pain, even if he or she does not live in their neighborhoods. And in large numbers, working families in Chicago, particularly those struggling with low-wage jobs that provide no benefits and little security, have lost faith in the man now dubbed the mayor of the 1 percent. What is hoped for and unseen is any plan for neighborhood redevelopment. What is hoped for and unseen is any indication of a strategy for building the economy from the bottom up. As mayor, Emanuel has focused resources downtown, not on neighborhoods in need. The lights are bright downtown, but the poor neighborhoods live in the shadows. Emanuel shut down 50 neighborhood schools with no community consultations. He waged war on teachers, privatized janitorial services and too often scorned public employees. Public housing has been shuttered even as private homes are foreclosed. When the schools close, neighborhoods lose resources and hope. Drug stores close; grocery stores close. The downtown thrives while the neighborhoods continue to decline.

As a 2013 study by the Grassroots Collaborative showed, the only one out of four of the jobs created downtown goes to a Chicagoan. And those few go primarily to residents in majority white neighborhoods, not black or Latino neighborhoods. Massive subsidies don’t begin to touch the people most in need of them. And as a Chicago Sun Times report revealed, whites continue to hold a disproportionate number of the highest paying jobs in the administration, particularly those that the mayor controls himself. When the highest paid aides closest to the mayor are white, no matter how dedicated, the concerns of impoverished black and Latino neighborhoods are not likely to get priority. Like any good politician, the mayor has reacted as his polls plummeted and his re-election stopped being a sure thing, pushing through an increase in the minimum wage. He’s also worked to extend pre-K and offer two years of community college tuition free to qualified high school graduates. He’s now touting his Neighborhoods Now program as a development program for seven neighborhoods, but as WBEZ, Chicago Public Radio exposed, the fund is a hodgepodge of private and public projects. In fact, one-fourth of the public money is focused on projects around McCormick Park Convention center, including two hotels and a big

stadium for DePaul -- hardly a program for neighborhood reconstruction. Rahm’s challenger, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia has an underfunded campaign but a rich message. He has the experience to deal with Chicago’s budget challenges, but he has the commitment to focus on urban reconstruction, on rebuilding neighborhoods, on putting the young to work. Against the odds, he has run a campaign that will take this race down to the wire. When people lose faith, they lose hope. Sadly, they too often give up on politics. They see no difference between candidates, no reason to vote. The struggle to survive is hard enough. Usually an incumbent can win re-election with the confidence that many of those who have been abandoned won’t even show up. What is stunning about the rise of challenger Chuy Garcia is the movement behind him -- citizens, teachers, organizers, union members, church goers unwilling to succumb to despair, unwilling to assume that nothing can change. That is the real story of the Chicago race. Whatever happens in the April runoff, that movement has given people a reason to believe once more. You can write to the Rev. Every March, creatives of all stripes gather in Austin to witness, inspire and share the visions that will galvanize the filmmakers and ideas of tomorrow. The SXSW® Film Conference & Festival champions the vitality, innovation and opportunity that drive entertainment and media, and boldly tackles the evolution of all aspects of “film” today, down to its very definition.” – SXSW This past week, the city of Austin welcomed thousands of movie aficionados for its annual South by Southwest (SXSW) film conference. From conversations with today’s most talented actors and creators, to screenings of narratives, documentaries, and big budget headliners, this year’s film conference was home to over 145 features. Since we couldn’t realistically make it to every single film, we screened a few that we knew would satisfy our devoted readers with the movie “Get Hard” starring the comedic duo Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart being one of those films. (Don’t worry, no spoilers!) Upon our arrival, the line was wrapped around the corner of Austin’s Paramount Theatre. Each and every

single movie-goer hoping to not only get a seat but hitting the jackpot of getting a coveted ‘selfie’ with Hart and Ferrell. Needless to say, there were hundreds of disappointed fans that didn’t get their chance at a seat or that ‘selfie’. Before the movie started, Janet Pierson, head of SXSW film, made a brief statement about the success of the film portion of SXSW and then went on to introduce Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell. The crowd immediately (and quite loudly) erupted in applause at their introduction. And just like that, every

After all the phone and camera flashes settled for a bit, Hart went on to say, “It’s our first premiere and we said what better place to bring it than Austin.” Requesting that attendees contact him on Twitter and Instagram with their thoughts on the movie, he went on to say, “I’m excited to see a response from a live audience.” The lights dimmed and the movie began. About “Get Hard” Stockbroker James King (Will Ferrell) is sentenced to ten years of prison at San Quentin after being prosecuted for fraud and embezzlement. With only thirty days to get his affairs in order and upon learning of what he is to expect in prison, he recruits Darnell (Kevin Hart), who he thinks has been to

Local Church Celebrates 150 Years of Being a Blessing and Being Blessed

ilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church celebrates their 150th anniversary this month. With nearly 1,000 worshippers flooding through the doors it is one Houston’s oldest congregations and hopes to remain standing on a firm foundation for 150 more years. “We thank God for blessing us for these past 150 years,” said Rev. James Blake, pastor of Pilgrim Rest for the last 14 years. “To God Be the Glory.” The Pilgrim Rest journey began in March 1865. Max Austin Sr. and Hannah Rasmus were the original creators of the church and had a small flock that would hold services inside various members’ homes. They later purchased property that was 1-acre for $1.50 located at what is now the 8000 block of Westheimer. That location became the church’s first home and Austin became the first pastor of the church until 1870. One of the oldest members of today’s membership is Arelelia Thymes Armstrong at 86-years-young she has been a member of Pilgrim Rest for 65 years. “When I first joined the church we held services in a small white church which is now in the back of the sanctuary,” Armstrong said. “They first built a baptism pool where both of my children were baptized.” She continued, “I remember there were foldable church pews that were tilted that had to be put out every Sunday. My daughter use to love to move around and slide around in the pews during the service and I would have to instruct her to sit still and act correctly.” Spending time at church with her daughter and her extended church family is what Armstrong loves about the people of Pilgrim Rest. The church was family

6

orientated when she first join in 1950 and remains the same today. Just as Armstrong brought her children to learn about God at Pilgrim Rest so did the parents of Rosanna Alford-Sanders. “My father Deacon Elston Alford, who was a superintendent of the Sunday School classes, and my mother Rebecca Simpson-Alford and my siblings all grew up at Pilgrim Rest,” she said. “Although I didn’t really understand or appreciate being in the atmosphere until I got older I now see that this is what our children and our youth need today. They need a solid spiritual foundation and we have that at Pilgrim Rest.” Now at the age of 71, Sanders, appreciates her parents for bringing her to the Bible base church. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she continues the family tradition with her own family. Her children now attend Pilgrim Rest and it has been rewarding for her to see them grow up here. She explained that knowing God at an early age is really helpful because it is the foundation children really need to become productive citizens. Pilgrim Rest helps their congregation but also to their surrounding community. During the 20th Century church members extended their hand of assistance to the city of Houston by participating in numerous civil rights demonstrations to help end segregation in the Houston Independent School District. They even built a free-standing Head Start School by the name of Piney Point Elementary that assisted in educating students and providing health and nutrition programs. They have shown their support and given a helping hand to organizations and congregations in need all over the nation. In 2013, the church sponsored the purchase of a water well in the Village of Awu in Agwu-Nkpa, Nigeria, helped the evacuees of Hurricane Katrina,

March 12 - March 18, 2015

www.StyleMagazine.com

contributed assistance to Haiti relief efforts through the America Red Cross and much more. “During Hurricane Katrina we gave, food, water, clothes and whatever was needed to families who unfortunately lost their homes. Then some of them joined the church,” added Miola Laws, 96-year-old member of the church. Pilgrim Rest also believes in educating and sharing the importance of the word of God and receiving a quality academic education not just for its members but all. “This is a matter that the church takes very seriously and supports whole-heartily,” said Laws. Our kids are very well prepared to succeed academically. We have a free tutorial group that helps students from grades kindergarten to high school. The students even send in their report cards and the pastor gives money to reward them for their great grade-point-averages.” Annually the church awards scholarships and Bibles to high school graduates while college students receive $1,000 for each year they are in school up to four years. Deacon Lester Whiteing said that the church has always been a giving church and giving is one thing among many that we make sure to always do. “We never know when we might need help as a church,” he said. “It is important for us as believers to step in and help those in need no matter their race or their denomination because it is the right thing to do.” Members can only tell so much of the story of this historic church. Where they leave off Deacon Whiteing as the church historian comes in to fill in the blanks and looks to the future of Pilgrim Rest.” What I am so happy about now at the church is our youth program. The future of this church is in their hands, and we are looking forward to seeing another 150 years because we are sure that this church is in the fix of doing mar-

velous and abundant things.” The current church leadership is training the next generation in the operations of the church having them assist as junior deacons, collecting the offering and assisting in discipleship to ensure that the next 150 years of Pilgrim Rest are just as solid as the first. “If you do not lead them and give them an opportunity, they will never know. You have to be a good follower, to become a great leader,” said Whiteing. During this 2015 year, Pilgrim Rest is celebrating their past, rejoicing about their present and looking forward to their future. “We have extraordinary teachings by the ministers that really teach the word of God at this church. It is only by the grace of God that we have survived as a congregation for this time, and it is only by His grace that we will continue on,” said long-time member Rosanna Alford-Sanders, 71. Echoing that sentiment is Deacon Whiteing, “I love my church and I think we are doing a great work, and I am so glad to have had the opportunity to be apart. We have changed building locations a few times, but our worship and the God that we serve has never changed, and He never will.” Houston Style Magazine celebrates with you Pilgrim Rest on your 150th Anniversary and wishes you many, many more!

Lisa Leslie Promotes Going Green with Toyota Green Initiative

S

he is adorned with gold medals from US Olympic basketball, golden WNBA Championships, WNBA MVP awards and many other gold-clad trophies -- but that was then, now basketball legend Lisa Leslie is all about helping youth and their families to go Green. The two-time WNBA champ recently teamed up with Toyota as an advocate for eco-living and national green progress through the Toyota Green Initiative (TGI) to promote green living and sustainability. The 4-time Olympic champion travels to various cities working with Toyota to promote a cause of which she and her family are very passionate. “I am really honored to be a part of TGI and join the coalition to help spread the message about the importance of recycling and making lifestyles changes,” said an excited Leslie. Leslie, a University of Southern California (USC) alum, was in Houston recently during the SouthWestern Athletic Conference’s (SWAC) basketball tournament to help Toyota and the SWAC celebrate their four-year partnership. During her visit, the retired Los Angeles Sparks legend collaborated with the TGI crew to conduct a day-of-service for approximately 50 youth of the Boys & Girls Club at Finnegan Park, in the Fifth Ward community. “Sports is an outlet to help get the word out (green initiative) through platforms such as the SWAC and other con-

8

ferences’ events,” commented Leslie. She added that many college mascots are animals that will become extinct if our country does not do a better job of protecting the planet. The self-proclaimed “eco-mom” stated that she began the green lifestyle several years ago, as a result of her daughter’s kindergarten class’ water conservation project in the Los Angeles, CA area. The mom of two, and wife of nearly 10 years to best-selling author and businessman Michael Lockwood, shared that when Lockwood was researching to find an efficient car for the family, he found the eco-friendly Toyota Prius. Leslie commented on her amazement to find fill-ups for gas were largely reduced, not to mention the car’s ability to help minimize pollution on the road. As a result of their findings with the Prius, the basketball icon requested a meeting with Toyota executives about getting involved in spreading the eco-friendly message, which led to her becoming involved in the green initiative program. She expressed that she was pleased with the program and the many benefits of incorporating an environmentally-conscious lifestyle for her family. The 2015 TGI day-of-service program was greeted with many youth of the Boys and Girls Club and the participants experienced a variety of eco-friendly activities that included recycling, re-

purposing and green education programs that will impact their lives. Assisting Leslie with the service initiative was actor Lance Gross, TGI advocate and co-star of the Tyler Perry “House of Payne” series. Gross was involved with TGI – Houston 2014, having participated during halftime of the SWAC’s Basketball Championship. In addition to the service activities, the Toyota Green Initiative program presented the B&G Club with a donation of $3,500 for its green educational programs. Leslie, the talented and humbled 6’ 5 California beauty, concluded, “Society is forcing us to change (our lifestyle) and if we are not listening, we might miss the boat.” When not on the road with Toyota’s TGI program or spending time with her family, the 4-time WNBA MVP serves as a basketball commentator for several networks, as well as the NBA’s Lakers’ and Clippers’ organizations. Since 2009, Toyota’s environmental stewardship program has educated students attending historically black colleges and university (HBCUs) of the community benefits of sustainable living. TGI is continuing its journey to spread the word on the value of environmental awareness in a variety of HBCU platforms throughout the year. BOOK REVIEW Family Business 3: The Return of Vegas By Terri

F

Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

by Carl Weber with Treasure Hernandez

amily comes first. That was a tenet you grew up with: nobody better come between you, sibs, and parents. Fam forever, sticking together. But is blood really thicker than water? In the new book “Family Business 3” by Carl Weber with Treasure Hernandez, both spill just as easily. Junior Duncan was a man in love. He never thought he could feel this way, but Sonya made him crazy-happy. She was beautiful, smart, sexy - and though he didn’t know it at first, she was also the wife of Brother Xavier, murderous leader of the Duncan family’s biggest rivals. So on the day that Junior’s proposal to Sonya led to death threats, the Duncans circled the wagons. Sonya tried hard to stay away from Junior, to protect him and his family, but it wasn’t possible; she knew that Xavier would kill the entire Duncan family in a second but she loved Junior too much. When he vowed to protect her, she ran away with him, hoping their escape wouldn’t lead to harm (or worse!) for everyone they loved. Brother X was insane with jealousy and anger. If he couldn’t have Sonya, then nobody could, and he’d start looking for her by doing as much damage as he could to Junior Duncan’s family. But first, he had to break out of prison and then he had to try to broker a deal with Bernie Goldman and his men. Gathering warriors was important now. What Junior did with X’s wife meant war. Paris Duncan had always been Daddy’s Girl. Patriarch LC had taught his baby girl how to shoot, fight, and kill, and now Paris was one of the Duncan Family’s best soldiers. She’d even assassinated the man she

loved because it needed doing. But it practically killed Paris when LC was shot in the chest by someone he knew. It was widely known on the streets that nobody messed with Vegas Duncan. Fresh out of prison, Vegas was ready to take his usual position of security in the Duncan Family but the growing war with Brother X… it concerned him. There could be a lot of bloodshed with this kind of street-fighting. Vegas’ mentor offered to help quiet troubled waters, but would Minister Farah’s intercession be enough? Action, sex, drugs, and violence – this book has all that packed between its covers. It’s gangsta gone gang-busters. And it’s kind of ho-hum. In “The Family Business 3,” the women are beautiful, scantily-clad, and oversexed. The men are tall, handsome sure-shots, and oversexed. There’s the usual gay brother who crushes on a thug, violent twins, baby-daddy drama, a “dirty cop” on the dole, and ethnic mafias everywhere. Sigh. Yes, author Carl Weber (with Treasure Hernandez) includes just what you’d expect in a book like this. And yes, it’s tired. Having said that, though, if you’ve read the first two “Family Business” novels, you’ll undoubtedly want to know what happens next. You’re probably wondering now, so go ahead. Put “Family Business 3” on your shelf. But I wouldn’t be grabbing it first… Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

San Antonio: Beyond the River Walk to the Historic Peal Brewery

S By Lisa

Valadez, Hispanic Managing Editor

pring Break is just around the corner and most Houstonians will have bags packed with the kiddos in tow with a desire to go, go, go. A perfect destination is a short trip down I-10 West to our neighboring city of San Antonio, TX. Wi t h i t s famed River Walk – a top destination attracting millions of visitors each year - historic sites such as the Alamo, and top-rated theme park, San Antonio is the go-to destination for families. Not into all the hustle and bustle of theme parks? Well, don’t you count San Antonio out just yet. The city has so much more to offer than theme parks. The River Walk’s lush landscapes not only winds you through the city’s center offering easy access to shopping and a variety of restaurants guaranteed to satisfy the appetite of any food lover – it also leads you to its newest destination, the Museum Reach. In 2009, the River Walk doubled its length with the opening of its Museum Reach – Urban Segment. This new stretch of walkway

includes hike and bike trails that lead to the San Antonio M u s e um of Art (SAMA) and access to San Antonio’s newest and trendiest destination, the Pearl. Although the Pearl is a paradise for architecture aficionados, its main draw is the food scene. Offering some of the top culinary spots in the city (and believe me, they are all buzz worthy!), the Pearl is home to one of my favorite restaurants, Cured. Specializing in cured foods ranging from pickles to duck ham and country style pork, this gem of a farm-to-table restaurant set in a renovated historical building adorned with aged meats in a glass case welcomes you upon entry. Visiting here is a must! If the menu seems a bit intimidating, no worries, the staff will happily walk you through the menu. I promise, the service at Cured is above par. It’s no wonder chef/owner Steve McHugh has received many accolades including Bon Appétit’s list of 50 top new restaurants in the country and the 2015 Texas Restaurant Neighbor Award. With all honesty, I recommend every single item on the menu. Ok, I know that sounds a bit unrealistic but hey, who says you can’t visit multiple times until you try absolutely everything on the menu? But on your first visit, the “must have” items to try are the signature cocktail appropriately named “Cured”

(Lemon Thyme Moonshine, Thyme, Ginger, HouseMade Citrus Bitters, Cava) along with the Charcuterie (to share). And please save room for dessert. They are seasonal so once again, trying them all won’t hurt a bit. I promise. So now that I’ve satisfied your appetite, it’s time to unwind and then relax in your comfy hotel. Our recommendation? Wyndham Garden River Walk Hotel Ideal for business travelers and culture lovers wanting to experience more than just the River Walk, the newly constructed Wyndham Garden River Walk/Museum Reach is the perfect lodging spot. With scenic views of the River Walk without all of the hustle and bustle of it all, this hotel is the perfect for a tranquil getaway. Each guest room, with its modern décor, is equipped with comfortable bedding and a flat screen LCD TV for your viewing pleasure. Suites offer a breathtaking view of the pool area as well as the tranquil River Walk. Guests can enjoy easy access to the River Walk’s Downtown Reach and the Mission Reach via riverboat. t’s no surprise that making healthy choices can make you feel more beautiful. Looking and feeling healthy is not just a trend but a way of life – because healthy is beautiful. Apply this concept to different areas of your life and focus on becoming your best self by following these simple tips: Strengthen your body Cardiovascular exercise is an important part of any routine, but a workout regimen should include more than just running or using the elliptical. Weight and interval training are great ways to lose fat and build muscle, and they make your workouts more interesting. Also, consider adding in some core strengthening exercises for better posture and overall mobility with sets of crunches, bridges and planks several times a week. Outside of exercise, a healthy lifestyle should emphasize a well-rounded diet. Avoid fad diets, which can strip your body of important nutrients and leave you looking dull and worn down. Instead, opt for well-balanced meals that include elements from every food group and remember to keep portion sizes under control. Also, be sure to stay hydrated to keep skin and hair moisturized and lustrous. Power up your smile A healthy smile can make you feel more confident and make a great first impression. Maintain good oral hygiene by flossing regularly, brushing at least twice a day and switching to Colgate Enamel Health Multi-Protection Toothpaste. It strengthens enamel, helps prevent acid erosion, and fights cavities, while also whitening teeth and freshening breath. Taking care of your tooth enamel is important because weakened enamel can lead to issues like sensitivity. Did you know that sensitivity pain can be caused by enamel loss resulting from brushing teeth directly after eating acidic foods? Protect your enamel by waiting 30 minutes after eating acidic foods before brushing your teeth. To help relieve any existing sensitivity, try the Colgate Sensitive Toothbrush + Built-In Sensitivity Relief Pen, which shields exposed nerves and creates a seal against sensitivity pain. This provides sensitivity relief within one week and long-lasting results with continued use, when used as directed.
