resident Obama’s historic trip to Havana, Cuba -- the first American president to visit since Calvin Coolidge in 1928 -- opens the door to a new era in relations not only with Cuba, but also with our neighbors across the hemisphere. Extensive press coverage of the trip will feature the President’s meeting with Cuban leader Raul Castro, the Tuesday baseball game pitting the Cuban national team against Tampa Bay, the president’s meetings with business leaders and with Cuban dissidents. We’ll get pictures of aged Chevy’s held together by duct tape, of lovely but crumbling Havana mansions, of Cuba’s lively culture and its widespread poverty. Cuba surely is a poor country. Its government, while still enjoying popular support, is a far remove from a democracy. Freedom of speech and assembly are greater than most realize,
POLITICAL By Burt
Cuba Through a Looking Glass but still severely policed. But much of what we think about Cuba is upside down, and inside out. First, in many ways, the president’s initiative to normalize relations with Cuba isn’t so much ending their isolation as ending ours. Cuba has enjoyed good and growing relations with our neighbors across the hemisphere for years. In recent years, those countries have threatened to exclude the U.S. from hemispheric meetings if we continued to demand that Cuba’s exclusion. We have sought to isolate Cuba for over 50 years; we ended up isolating ourselves. Second, for many across the world, Cuba, not the U.S., has been on the right side of history. Cuba stood with Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress while the U.S. was supporting the apartheid government and labeling Mandela a terrorist. When South Africa invaded Angola in the mid-1970s to block the independence movement there, it was Cuba, not the U.S. that sent troops to force South Africa’s withdrawal. One of the first visits Mandela made after he was freed was to Havana to thank Fidel Castro for his support, hailing the Cuban revolution as “a source of inspiration to all freedom-loving peoples.” Similarly, for many across Africa and Latin America, Cuba is known for supplying doctors and teachers, aiding in the development
of nations emerging from colonialism. America, too often, has been either allied with the former colonialists or hostile to the emerging independent movements. Third, while some of Cuba’s poverty is self-inflicted, some is also the direct result of 50 years of the embargo. Cuba is a small island, 90 miles off our coast, without its own oil. Before the revolution, tourism was a leading industry; foreign investors were central to the economy. The revolution upended that order. The embargo severed those and any new ties. In the Cold War years, the Soviet Union alone provided a lifeline for the regime. Since the end of the Cold War, more and more countries have chafed at the American embargo and begun to deal with Cuba. Fourth, most popular leaders in South America see Cuba as an example of proud, national independence. In many ways, our hostility to Castro elevated his stature across the world. Emerging populist leaders in South America don’t plan to imitate Cuban socialism, which is being slowly reformed. But they are envious of Cuba’s health care and education systems, which provide Cubans with a standard of health and educational opportunity far above most developing countries. Fifth, Cuba has not been closed to us; we have been closed to Cuba. The Cubans have been looking for a dialogue for years. When I went to Cuba in 1984,
I met with Fidel Castro and even took him to church. We negotiated the release of 22 American and 26 Cuban political prisoners. He was ready for a dialogue then, but the U.S. continued its no-talk policy until President Obama finally launched his historic initiative. Reform will come slowly in a Cuba that is still proud of its revolution and anxious to preserve its gains in health care and education. Its foreign policy will remain proudly independent. The regime remains on guard against U.S. efforts to undermine it from within. But reform will come slowly here also. To this day, Congress refuses to lift an embargo that punishes a small neighbor off our coast. To this day, our arrogance and ideological blinders make it hard for us to see Cuba whole. The president has opened the door. Increased travel, cultural exchanges and the beginnings of business investment will push it open further. Most Americans already support normal relations and an end to a policy that has failed for over half a century. And one day, we can hope, even the ideologues and zealots in the Congress will get the message. You can write to the Rev. ia Love, who last year became the first Haitian American in Congress and Utah’s first black American in Congress, helped her Congress colleague U.S. Senator Ted Cruz win Tuesday as the first Hispanic to win a Utah Presidential Caucus. Love’s, who is also first and only black female Republican in Congress, influence helped Cruz to garner a Utah victory with 69.2 percent or 118,904 votes. “America faces difficult challenges and pressing problems at home and abroad. There has never been a greater need for courage and courageous leaders,” Love said. Love sought to draw a distinction between what she sees as a campaign based on “angst and anger” and one of substance. “Because I believe we need a president with less bravado and more real courage to act on conservative principles, I will be casting my vote Tuesday for Ted Cruz,” she said ahead of the voting. “He has proven himself to be a principled, courageous leader with a positive agenda for our future.” Love said Cruz reflected the values she wants to see in White House. “I want a president who is interested in reducing the power of the presidency and federal government — not expanding it. BOOK REVIEW
Be Your Best Boss
nother desk at the office is empty this week. Another co-worker packed up, leaving the place short-handed. Another downsize, and another reason for worry. What will you do if you’re next? You can’t just start over but you can’t retire yet, either. So read the new book “Be Your Best Boss” by William R. Seagraves, and see if you have what it takes for a new beginning. William Seagraves likes to drive. When he’s with friends or colleagues, he’s always the first to offer his car, which is a good metaphor for his worklife: he likes to be in the driver’s seat in business. Yes, he enjoyed some autonomy in his last position, but he says, “I could not stand [the] lack of control.” Seagraves left his corporate job and tried his hand at being an entrepreneur (“That scary twelve-letter word”) in a few different ways before he discovered something he liked. Today, he runs a successful company that helps entrepreneurs get started; in this book, he offers guidance on deciding if owning a business is for you. First: what’s your pain? Are you being forced out by younger workers? Downsized? Or are you disillusioned with corporate life? What are your passions? Knowing answers to those questions will help winnow your options and overcome the “Yeah, Buts.” Look at your skills and experiences and understand that you’ve already won half the battle. You know how to play nice with others. You’ve grown a thick skin, “practiced making money,” and learned the rules of a lot of games. Many of the traits you’ll need to be an entrepreneur are inherent in you now. Next, take the quiz Seagraves includes and
understand that “size matters.” Are you more of a “Company of One” kind of person? Would you be better as “Boss of a Few”? Is a “Business of Many” more your style? And what about a franchise? Know the pros and cons of these entrepreneurial methods, take things “one step at a time,” keep in mind that change is the “only constant,” and remember that “… a smart business owner always plans for the exit, and there are more options than you might think.” Self-employment: the most frustrating, irritating, horrible, wonderful, awesome, terrific thing you’ll ever do for yourself. Are you ready? “Be Your Best Boss” will help you decide. As you might expect, author William R. Seagraves is mostly encouraging in his book. There’s a lot of surface positivity here, but entrepreneurial readers with a mindset of doing it will absolutely find the help they need to do it right. I was happy to note plenty of quizzes to guide future business owners into the kind of endeavor that best fits their personality and work-style, and the Pros and Cons pages here are invaluable. While younger entrepreneurs might appreciate this book, it really seems to be more for older readers who’ve been in the workforce awhile. Corporate life may have soured for Boomers and early Gen-Xers, but “Be Your Best Boss” won’t leave them empty handed. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Friendly Advice to Fight Cold and Flu
ven a mild case of the flu or a powerful cold can leave you feeling run down and out of sorts for days or even weeks. While many ailments must simply run their course, there are many steps you can take to fight your way back to good health. The first step is identifying whether you’re fighting a cold or the flu, which can be tricky because many of the symptoms are similar. However, colds tend to come on more slowly, while the flu hits rather quickly. Often cold symptoms stay limited to your head (runny nose, sneezing, sore throat), while a flu affects other areas of your body with aches, fatigue and sometimes digestive irritation such as nausea or diarrhea. Generally, flu symptoms are more intense than cold symptoms. Sometimes, but not always, the flu brings a fever or 100 F or more, along with chills and sweats. Follow this advice to help fight cold and flu, and get you back on your feet:

Also wash your hands frequently to prevent infecting others or re-infecting yourself. • If you are at risk of developing flu-related complications, consult a doctor about whether prescription antiviral drugs are advisable. Typically, these prescriptions are most effective when taken within the first 48 hours that you become ill. • Use over-the-counter remedies to ease symptoms and make yourself more comfortable. Water, juice and warm soups or broths are good options to keep fluids in your system. • Adjust your climate. Opt for a temperature that is warm but not hot, and if air is overly dry, add

Houston’s Ready to Slam Dunk the Final Four

ouston is becoming a Sports Mecca. Having already hosted the NBA All Star Game twice in the last ten years, being on the brink of doing the same for the Final Four, and having the Super Bowl in 2017, Houston is a sports lover’s playground. As the city gets ready once again to be on the world’s scope for Final Four 2016 Houston Style had the chance to speak with the man who is behind the trigger of all operations, Doug Hall, President and CEO of the Houston Organizing Committee for the NCAA Final Four. Those who live and work in Houston know
bids, win them and execute against the bid which is the hard part. A lot of people can win bids but can you make it work financially and can you make it work for a city and local standpoint for the client,” commented Hall. Houston has proven that we can make it work and are preparing to do it again. Hall has been getting ready for well over a year for the events happening April 2-4, 2016. And he has not been alone. With him have been 16 board members, 12 staffers, and 300 volunteers working 21 different committees. Joining in the mad fun will be an additional 3500 volunteers recruited to

this city is the best and others are really taking notice. Hall said that was evident any time a city wins the bid to hosts something as the Final Four twice within five years before hosting even one of the games. “In 2003 we won the bid for 2011 and 2008 we won the bid for 2016 so we had an usual circumstance where we had two awarded without hosting one so this is the second time in 5 years so we are getting ready,” said Hall. Why is Houston so popular for major sporting events? Houston has the goods. According to Hall it takes a combination of facilities and dollars to make your city most attractive to the client. “Most importantly it takes the facilities and a city with the right attitude to go after these 8
work Final Four weekend. NCAA is helping Houston become more beautiful from the outside in. The city’s landscape is slowly transforming for Final Four weekend with the numerous hotels going up and road construction being completed. Our community is getting loved on with service projects throughout the city like the one done at the Blue Triangle Community Center. Located in the heart of Third Ward, the Blue Triangle, which has been a pillar of the community since the 1920s, had been in need of some repair for years. The Final Four Local Organizing Committee with 300 volunteers, many of whom were veterans, cleaned, organized and beautified the facility. Volunteers could be seen

painting walls, landscaping, repairing playground equipment and organizing books. “One of the great things about the NCAA is they allow you to improve your community whether it is rebuilding the basketball court at Morefield Boys & Girls Club or working at the Blue Triangle Community Center. “ Hall continued, “They ask us what’s important in your community and so we picked 3, 4, 5 projects and they approved them, looked at them and funded those projects out of their dollars. So it is just a great way that they could use the appeal of a great college sporting event to do improvements in your community and have a positive impact that will last beyond April 1-4, 2016.” Another project that has Houston ISD school students excited is the Final Four Literacy Bracket. Students advance in the bracket based on the number of books they have read and the number of hours they spend reading. Final Four weekend includes a list of events that for the most part are free or of little cost. Featured events include the Final Four 4 Miler, Final Four Fan Fest™, March Madness Music Festival®(with concerts for 3 days), Reese’s Final Four Friday, youth clinics, a basketball dribble and more. Final Four is about much more than ball, a hoop, and a hardwood floor. It is about people coming together to support each other and their community while having fun with a healthy competition for ultimate bragging rights. Are you ready to play in Houston? The city is being caution by saturating ticket lobbies and parking garages with police and not allowing drivers to wait for extended periods in drop off and pick up areas. Mayor Turner said these practices would stay in place throughout NCAA Final Four events. All are asked to report any suspicious activity to 1-855-I-Watch-4 or visit www.iWatchHouston.org. HCC Banned by State Board From Accepting New Nursing Students
he Texas Board of Nursing has banned Houston Community College from accepting any new nursing students over testing rates. HCC students have not faired well with the passing of board exams for the last three years. Administrators told NewsFixHouston the problem stemmed from decreased admission standards and accelerated courses to increase enrollment coupled with the national exam becoming more difficult. In response to the board’s decision HCC dropped accelerated classes, increased GPA requirements and provided tutoring and more testing to help students be more prepared for the national exam. Founding partner companies represent organizations that are scaling and leading their industries. They are working toward a common goal of enhancing participatory democracy and increased voter turnout. Participating companies will demonstrate their commitment by designing civic engagement plans that could include: promoting voter registration and awareness among their employees, using communication channels to share The TurboVote Challenge with customers and stakeholders, sponsoring awareness campaigns to keep people engaged and voting, and encouraging civic discussions and volunteer efforts. Democracy Works will be available to provide planning and implementation support to TurboVote Challenge partners upon request. Significantly higher voter turnout can be achieved by ensuring that voting fits the 21st century lifestyle. The U.S. Census Bureau consistently reports that 60 percent of people who don’t vote identify process issues as the problem. TurboVote was created to solve these process-oriented problems. Furthermore, The Challenge embraces collaboration across America from colleges and universities to businesses to nonprofit organizations, and everything in between, all focused on the one simple goal of creating greater participation in our democracy.
What The TurboVote Challenge partners have to say: Airbnb head of global policy and public affairs Chris Lehane: “Every vote matters and we should do all we can to make sure that everyone can participate in our democracy. Airbnb hosts and guests are engaged in the communities they call home and we’re eager to help everyone participate in the important conversations that will shape the future of our country, our democracy and our world.” Alberto Olivas, executive director, Congressman Ed Pastor Center for Politics & Public Service at Arizona State University’s College of Public Service and Community Solutions: “Our partnership with TurboVote has been a key tool to promoting student-led political and electoral engagement, with a strong focus on voting and elections. We are enthusiastic about working with Democracy Works in partnership with Starbucks and a national coalition of entities to further support student efforts to increase voter education and turnout especially among the less-well represented communities in our state.” Democracy Works co-founder and executive director Seth Flaxman: “For us to succeed, mass civic participation can’t be someone else’s job. It can’t just be the nonprofit or political people. It will only happen if it’s a job that belongs to all of us. This initiative will keep growing, with the help of more companies and organizations that decide to join. There is nothing more powerful than a majority of people voting for something.” Read the full story online at www.democracy.works/challenge

The Barbeque Professor Ends Rodeo Experience On a High By Yolanda Pope
Tuffy Stone
T
his year’s Houston Live Show and Rodeo Cook off welcomed well-renowned Barbeque Champion Tuffy Stone. He and his team were recently crowned Grand Champions at The Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in 2015, but remains humble and passionate about his love for good tasting barbeque. Originally from Lynchberg, Virginia, Stone and his wife own four restaurants, a catering business, in addition to being a regular on BBQ Pitmasters on Destination America Television. Moreover, Tuffy is a classically trained chef in French Cuisine and started his culinary career preparing gourmet food. Stone loves to cook and when he was ready for a change in kitchens entered his first Barbecue completion in 2004 placing second in pork and won an overall 7th place. Furthermore, since that first competition Stone has not looked back, he and Team Cool Smoke have racked up a winning streak and made history winning the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Invitational (2013), the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Open (2014), and the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue (2013 and 2015). Tuffy summed up his Houston Rodeo experience on his Facebook page “Dad and I had a really great time at the Houston Live Rodeo Show Barbecue World Championship. The volunteers are absolutely amazing and should be the ones walking the stage. Great weather made for big crowds. We were so fortunate to make finals in both ribs and brisket. We ended up 2nd in brisket, 4th ribs, and 20th in chicken out of over 400 teams competing. HLSR, Thank you for everything!” When asked about tips for us cooking at home Stone offered some very simple tips such as; “since no one likes tough barbecue, keep the meat moist and don’t give it too much smoke”. Lastly, Stone’s passion and love for his craft of Barbecue mastery is evident in his voice and the commitment he has made to serving delicious food. To read more about him, find recipes and links to videos of Pitmaster Tuffy, go to http://coolsmokebarbeque.com. In addition to that, Stone posts regularly on his Facebook page “Tuffy Stone”. TRAVEL
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
W
hen going out of the county is too far away and Las Vegas is out of the question how do you getaway without straying too far from home? Escape to the best vacay right in your city. The Houston Airport Marriott at George Bush Intercontinental is just far enough to say you have traveled and luxurious enough to say you’ve been spoiled. Ideal for business travelers as it sits in the heart of the airport, I took the Houston Airport Marriott on a different spin. I allowed my mind to do a little make believe as I pretended to go on a far away destination. I literally had about an hour drive to the hotel and with the planes flying over head it wasn’t a far stretch. My eyes did a dance as I walked in the hotel darting here and there taking in all the decorative artwork and other décor signifying flight and travel further enhancing my fantasy getaway experience. The more than friendly staff quickly checked me and I was ready for my adventure even if it was only for 24 hours. My first quest was navigating the elevators. Arranged in a quadrant close attention must be paid to board the right elevator and to take the right path to your room. Think of it as one of Dora the Explorer’s mini adventures. Lucky for me my path was not confusing as my room was right by the elevators. What I found immediately refreshing is how this hotel is in the middle of the airport and planes are all around but not heard. The hotel is actually in a no fly zone so the planes are not allowed to fly over the hotel but can only taxi. Walking from the elevator to my room I was allowed to breath in fresh air in the breeze way that was situated like a paradise retreat with big trees, beautiful landscape and sitting area to enjoy the view. This gave me time to take in the pool with its piercing blue color. Had it not been for cooler temps, I would have taken a dip. But none was ruin because my room was so fabulous. I wished for more people as the room was absolutely massive. It would be a dream for a business traveler needing to host an in-room business meeting or for a grand time of fun for a group of friends. The focal point of the suite was a large dark wood coffee table with seating for seven. . More seating was available on the coach that also doubled as a bed and three additional chairs. Not too far from the table was a bar with mini fridge. Big thumbs up for the USB ports available in the room for easy phone charging and the 14 plugs that are in each room. Venturing off to the bedroom my eyes widen when I saw the bed that I immediately took a dive in. Why oh why could I not pack it up with me. Saying that

Business or Pleasure: Houston Airport Marriott Makes the Perfect Getaway
it felt short of amazing is an understatement. And the little towel animal that greeted me with the welcome note was a warming touch. I didn’t stay in the bed for long as I had appointment for the spa. Well, at least, that is what the shower in the bathroom felt like. Larger than your average shower, the shower head was about the side of a salad plate so the water coming down on me was like a massage. I could stay in there for hours. But I had more of the hotel to check out. My stomach was starting to growl so I headed to the hotel restaurant. So many great choices I started off with a classic Texas 1015 Onion Dip and homemade chips. The chips were delicate, crisp and not a bit greasy. They paired with the onion dip that was thicker
than any I have had which gave a rich flavor. Next was my entrée of Seared Red Fish with corn-hatch bacon chili succotash, and chipotle butter. I was a little leery of the dish because of the sides when I ordered but one bite in I knew I made the right decision. I am not a fan of succotash but the chef’s combination of ingredients with it was a party in my mouth. All the flavors blended well together and the fish practically

melted in my mouth. Usually, restaurants in Texas are known for their mammoth size portions. I am always taking home to-go boxes. But the portions served at the Houston Airport Marriott were just right. There was no one morsel left on my plate. I capped off my meal with a sinful treat of brownie-a-la-mode. No words can describe this decadent, chocolate piece of wonderfulness. Just order it and thank me later. Thoroughly full, I decided to see what else had to offer. My feet directed me straight to the gym. I was so surprise. Most hotel gyms are small with the mirror on one wall to make you think it is bigger with a couple of stationary bikes, treadmill and maybe some weights with a TV if you are lucky. the Houston Airport Marriott at George Bush Intercontinental laughs at hotel gyms like that. Try four elliptical, two stationary bikes, 7 weight machines for arms, legs, chest, and a chin up bar. Of course there was a TV complete a snack station stocked with fruit, water, cold & room temp towels, and your own set of headphones. Wanting to relax a little I took a breather in the M Club Lounge. Any guest with Marriot status can access the M Club and those without that status can pay an additional fee. The M Club is a nice place to unwind when you don’t want to be in the room. There is a mini fridge stocked with complementary water, juice, soda and fruit. Fresh baked cookies are available in the evening and pastries in the morning. There is even a more private meeting room. The M
Club has a special door where guests can walk through the Marriott’s show kitchen to the hotel restaurant. So I have told you a great deal if you want to stay at the hotel but what if you just want to plan event. They can accommodate you. The hotel recently had a $60 million renovation so they have plenty of space to host whatever kind of gathering one can come with. The ballroom seats up to 500 people and there are 23 breakout rooms. The hotel has 40,000 square feet of meeting spaces. In addition, it has a 24 hour business center. Guests coming to your event will be comfortable in one of the Houston Airport Marriott 570 rooms. If they are flying straight into Bush Intercontinental Airport there will be no need for a taxi as the tram for the airport is at the bottom of the hotel. Literally you can exit the ram and take the elevator to the hotel lobby. I was told it takes about 15 minutes to go from the hotel to the terminal. How convenient! I can’t say enough about how wonderful the Houston Airport Marriott at George Bush Intercontinental is. I loved my getaway. The only problem was that my stay was too short. Be sure to make your stay with them longer. For more information, visit www.marriott.com.

SXSW 2016: The Best Photos & Memories
By Brandon Caldwell, Online Editor
S
XSW is not just a festival institution, it’s the festival for many an up and coming artist or established acts waiting for the perfect moment and audience to create moments of surprise. For many of the festivals newest warts, namely a large influx of people who show up just to party on 6th Street, there’s still a bit of charm in some of the festivals more pristine showcases. The FADER Fort, presented by Converse yielded some of the festivals best performances such

as Tory Lanez doing his best to crowd surf and walk on hands, G.O.O.D Music artist Desiiigner attempting his best to brush away all comparisons to Atlanta rapper Future, Metro Boomin & DJ Esco holding court and the surprise of all surprises, Drake holding his first SXSW showcase as the cap to this year’s FADER Fort. What SXSW means to a lot of acts, both novelty and established is a chance to capture an audience without the cache of a tour. Wristbands and RSVPs make for far more intimate locales, more interaction
and a stronger rapport with your core audience. People plan entire Spring Breaks around hitting Austin, around seeing certain acts and making new discoveries. It may be the only time someone who is a fan of Lil Yachty in Texas may see him in his nubile state before growing to something bigger and better. SXSW 2016 will be remembered for many things, the clips of certain rappers, singers and other artists tearing 6th Street down. That it would be the last SXSW using the Austin Music Hall as a venue as
its set to be torn down and replaced by high priced condominiums. Most of all, it will be the last SXSW for The Illmore, the after hours party collaboration between IllRoots & Scoremore. It went out with a bang as Jazz Cartier literally performed from the ceiling, Kehlani soothed and awed fans and the makeshift photo booth. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

tarting this year, any graduating high school senior who is accepted to one of Detroit’s five community colleges won’t have to pay a dime for tuition. The Detroit Promise Zone program, officially launched this week, will make it possible. At first the funds will come from a private scholarship foundation. But starting in 2018, some of the money will come from property taxes already earmarked for the program. The program will eventually expand to cover the cost of four years of college tuition at a state school for each Detroit student. Detroit follows Tennessee and Oregon that made community college tuition-free for graduating seniors. For more information, visit www.cnn.com.

Airlines Lose Big Betting Fuel Prices Will Jump
A
irlines in the U.S. have lost a bundle betting that fuel prices would go up. Three of the nation’s major airlines -United Continental, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines -- had locked in fuel purchases at prices above the current market value. CNN reports the idea was to hedge in case prices went higher. Instead prices plunged, and the airlines lose hundreds of millions of dollars as a result. None of the airlines hedged all their fuel needs, so low prices have still helped a lot. In fact the three airlines have saved $11.8 billion from low fuel prices alone. Still, the hedging losses add up. For more information, visit www.cnn.com.
