COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

T

his country has made remarkable progress on civil rights over our history. We’ve moved from slavery to segregation to equal rights under the law. African-Americans have gained the right to vote, the right to equal employment opportunity. Open racism has become increasingly unacceptable. Gays and lesbians have progressed toward equal rights. Samesex marriage is increasingly accepted in law and in practice. Yet in the past years we’ve been presented with inescapable evidence of continuing systemic discrimination. Ferguson and many other abuses sparked the Black Lives Matter movement that exposed the systemic and too often deadly bias of our criminal justice system.

Revive the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights Liberals and conservatives alike have criticized mass incarceration of nonviolent offenders, disproportionately people of color. The wealth gap between the races has increased dramatically, as African-Americans and Latinos were disproportionately targeted and victimized by the systemic fraud that led to the financial collapse. Muslim communities have come under brutal assault from political candidates looking to scare up votes. As we’ve already seen in Arizona and Wisconsin, voting rights have come under the worst attack since the days of Jim Crow. Governors across the country have refused to expand Medicaid, passing up on billions in federal money, with people of color disproportionately the victims. We need to revive a powerful, independent Civil Rights Commission to act as an independent watchdog, not partisan, to report on these and other fundamental civil rights concerns and make recommendations to the Congress and the president. The U.S. Civil Rights Commission was created in 1957 under Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower to provide a powerful, independent monitor of civil rights. Ike’s committee that recommended its formation concluded: “In a democratic

society, the systematic, critical review of social needs and public policy is a fundamental necessity. This is especially true of a field like civil rights, where the problems are enduring and range widely (and where) ... a temporary, sporadic approach can never finally solve these problems.” The Civil Rights Commission’s early reports on voting rights and school integration had powerful effect. It played a major role in helping to define what became the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. In 2000, it released a powerful report on police practices and civil rights in America. The commission still exists but it has been weakened dramatically. Under Ronald Reagan, its budget was cut. Under George W. Bush, it became a partisan battleground, with conservatives seeking to turn it into a vehicle against affirmative action. It was stunningly absent from the debate on reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act in 2006. No w i t i s a sh e l l o f i t s former self. Its recent reports -- on police relations, school bullying, and immigration detention -- have received little attention. Its staff has been cut by more than half from its 1996 level. Its authorization has expired; it exists on annual appropriations that have slowly starved it of funds. Progress on civil rights has

always been contested. But leaders of both parties even in the 1950s and 1960s realized that a powerful, respected, objective monitor on civil rights could make a significant contribution in helping the country’s leaders and its people understand the challenges we faced and recommend reforms to address them. Now we are deprived of that powerful voice. Everything seems reduced to partisan argument. Even where there is consensus, there is no authoritative, independent voice able to challenge both Congress and the president when needed. America is a remarkably diverse nation. Diversity can be our strength. Handled badly, it can rip nations apart, as we’ve seen in the impoverished, isolated and resentful immigrant communities in France and Belgium. It is time to revive an authoritative Civil Rights Commission. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Fondren Park Welcomes Missouri City Candidates

e are less than two weeks to the Monday, April 25th start to early voting for the May 7th Missouri City elections for Mayor and two at- large city council seats. Mayor Allen Owen, AtLarge 1 City Council Member Jerry Wyatt and At-Large 2 City Council Candidate Dr. Cynthia Gary came to Fondren Park Tuesday (April 12th) to visit with voters in one of the most diverse city’s most communities. “It’s an honor serving our community of Missouri City for the last 37 years I looked forward to continuing to serve this city we love. I ask for your continued support and vote so we can continue to make Missouri City the best place to live, work, worship, raise our families, and yes, retire,” said Owen, who has served as mayor for 22 years. Before that Mayor Owen served on city council and on the planning and zoning committees. He is a retired banker that built a bank 40 years ago nearby at South Main and Hillcroft with his wife of 48 years Jane. The couple is grateful for their children and grandchildren. “With your vote, city council, city staff and the business and civic community I’ve brought 1,500 jobs to our neighborhood, $500,000 in commercial development, major

City Council Candidate Gary is a wife, mother, grandmother, former teacher, principal, corporate chemist and retired business owner whose lived in Missouri City for nearly 40 years. Her reason for her running in this election is to continue working with Owen and Wyatt as she did as a district city council member, school board trustee and homeowner’s association representative. “As a wife, sister and mother of police officers I back our brothers Mayor Allen Owen, Jerry Wyatt and Dr. Cynthia Gary in blue. BOOK REVIEW

We Love You, Charlie Freeman

nything’s worth a try. Never done it before? Then give it a whirl, you have nothing to lose. You might actually like it. You might grow to love it. And then again – as in the new book “We Love You, Charlie Freeman” by Kaitlyn Greenidge, the experiment might go horribly awry. The shiny new car just didn’t seem right. Nothing did, really. Leaving their home, moving to another state, having to make new friends, Charlotte Freeman hated it all. And this experiment her parents had gotten them into, well, no. Her mother, Laurel, sure was excited about it, though. Ever since she was young, Laurel had been fascinated with sign language, and she taught both her daughters to sign as soon as they were old enough to understand the motions. But a chimpanzee? A chimp the Freemans would raise as a child, while they taught it sign language? Charlotte couldn’t ever imagine spending the rest of her teenage years pretending that a chimpanzee was her brother. She was leery of the “doctor” who ran the program, and of the ancient woman who’d founded the whole thing. They were white; the Freemans were black and Charlotte suspected that race had something to do with why The Toneybee Institute had hired her mother, but it didn’t matter. What mattered was that Charlotte and her little sister seemed to be losing their mother’s love to a chimpanzee. Nobody’d called Ellen Jericho by her real name in years. They all called her by her Star of the Morning name, Nymphadora, which was a name that made her proud, and which was the name she’d given Dr. Gardner when they first met.

They made their acquaintance because he’d been bothering the town’s children with his obsessive sketching. Her Star sisters asked her to ask him to stop, which Nymphadora did – brokering a deal with him to sketch her instead, in poses that he chose. She didn’t expect to fall in love with him, nor was she prepared to stumble upon the horrible reason why Gardner wanted her to pose unclothed. And more than 70 years later, Charlotte was equally surprised at what she discovered… For sure, “We Love You, Charlie Freeman.” is sharp as an axe. Author Kaitlyn Greenidge doesn’t just touch upon the issue of race, she tackles it and knocks it to the ground. This, while we squirm over what we see happening to the people in the story, and what we think is coming. Yep, Greenidge is good at making readers uneasy. That dis-ease, however, fully extends to the character, Nymphadora, who’s introduced with her Star of the Morning lineage in a way that made me wonder if this was a time-travel novel. It’s not – but it took me a good long while to understand so. Knowing that will make less of a struggle in reading this novel, and it’ll help you to love it as much as I did. For a book with edginess, unrest, and just enough weirdness, “We Love You, Charlie Freeman” is worth a try. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Understanding the Yawn

before jumping, so it’s not just boredom or sleepiness that brings on yawns. Yawning may trigger the brain to make a change in its state, either from bored to alert, sleepy to awake, etc. Why do I yawn when I see someone else yawning? You won’t be surprised to hear that this too is a mystery. However, there are some surprising things that are known. Even though children begin yawning as early as their first trimester as fetuses, they don’t experience the contagious yawn until closer to 5 years old, around the same time they develop better social understanding and empathy. Interestingly, children with autism yawn just as often as other children, but are much less likely to have a contagious yawn.

Y

awning is a natural part of everyday life, yet this simple phenomenon has some rather curious and mysterious features. To help you learn more about yawning, Dr. Sujay Kansagra, a sleep health consultant for Mattress Firm and the director of Duke University’s Pediatric Neurology Sleep Medicine Program, offers answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. Why do I yawn? This simple question does not yet have a simple answer. However, there are a handful of popular theories. For example, yawning may increase

6

the body’s oxygen levels and help get rid of carbon dioxide. Alternatively, it may serve an evolutionary role in which yawning was used to show teeth and intimidate others. More recent theories suggest that yawning may help cool the brain in situations when it gets too hot. No theory has been proven correct. Do I yawn only when I’m sleepy? You may think yawning only happens when bored or tired, yet it is not uncommon to see Olympic athletes yawning just prior to their events. A study that looked at soldiers about to parachute out of an airplane for the first time showed an increase in yawning just

Why am I yawning right now? Either this article is making you sleepy or you’ve hit on another common trigger for yawns. It’s not only seeing a yawn that can trigger one. Hearing, reading about or thinking about a yawn may also bring one out. I frequently see dogs yawning. Do all animals yawn? All vertebrate animals yawn. However, only humans, chimpanzees and possibly monkeys will yawn when others yawn. Humans are more likely to mimic the yawn of others when they know them well, a habit that has also been shown by chimps. For more information about yawning, visit StopYawnTalking.info. ark clouds, torrential rains and flooded streets are grounds to make it a night in. Other vehicles run to take cover while the GMC Terrain smirks to gear up for whatever comes its way. It takes charge of the road and lets other fall in line. I was fortunate to test drive the 2016 GMC Terrain Denali through some of the worst driving conditions. Even though the elements were against me, I never felt safer than behind the wheel of the GMC Terrain. Alerts like the Forward Collision and Lane Departure are the best for distracted drivers and keeping everyone on the road safe. The Forward Collision alert beeps to warn the driver when driving too close to the care directly in front of them. The Lane Departure alert helps to keep the driver in their lane of traffic. Side blind zone and rear cross traffic alerts are like an extra pair of eyes on the road giving notifications for areas that are out of the driver’s line of sight. StabiliTrak can be a driver’s best friend as it uses innovative technology to control the stability of the vehicle when making certain movements or when more torque is needed. Driving the Terrain was a joy. I found the ride to be rather quiet even though the Terrain is a SUV. A lot of my fulfillment had to do with the way the Terrain moved over Houston’s pothole riddled streets. I didn’t feel the total absorption of potholes due to the GMC Terrain’s shocks and good tires. Eighteen and nineteen inch tires are exclusive to the GMC Terrain depending on which engine is under the hood. Top speeds are little over 100-mph and the GMC Terrain can come to a complete stop in 125 feet when going 60-mph. My review vehicle was equipped with a 2.4 liter 4-cyclinder engine producing 182 horsepower and

Take Charge of the Road in a 2016 GMC Terrain Denali

172 lb-ft of torque. An optional 3.6-liter V6 engine is available for more power. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2.4-liter engine is 16-mpg city and 23-mpg highway. While inside the SUV I got to experience some of the technology of the vehicle. All I have to say is Yeeessss. The GMC Terrain comes with wifi. Just call on OnStar, have the vehicle pin available, and like

that your vehicle is a hotspot. Another thing that gets rave reviews from me is the infotainment center as it is a great selling feature. The thing can do everything! Loaded with apps, one can control the AM/FM radio, navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, and more. Space is very generous in the GMC Terrain

Denali. The 5-passenger crossover SUV offers all passengers plenty of leg and headspace even for those who are pretty tall. Adjustable power seats with lumbar support give the driver and front passenger a seat that hugs them. A road trip would be great in this SUV. There is about 31.6 cubic feet of cargo space when the passenger seats are up and space expands to 63.9 cubic feet when the seats are down. The addition of the power liftgate is a great help when loading cargo in this space. Now that you know all about the inside lets look at the exterior. The GMC signature grill immediately captures your attention with a revised bumper and fog lights. Chrome trim with Denali badging accents the frame of the vehicle nicely. I like the frame a lot better on the newer models from the original frame that was real boxy. It gives the appeal of an upscale rugged look. My review vehicle was a beautiful Ebony Twilight Metallic color. The GMC Terrain Denali is at the top of the trim level to give a higher class of refinement so it is pretty pricey. But if your budget allows the jump to pay the Denali price then go full throttle with all the upgraded features. Starting price for Denali is a $35,725. My review was fully loaded so it was priced at $41,080. However, the GMC Terrain has five trim levels with the most basic model starting at $25,000. Overall I was extremely pleased with the GMC Terrain Denali. It is really great for families and those who like to take their friends everywhere. All will be safe and comfortable for miles to come. Check out the 2016 GMC Terrain Denali at your local GMC dealer or on www.gmc.com.

nconditional love can be a hard concept to grasp until you are put in certain situations. Being a new parent is one of those situations. Unconditional love happens instantly the moment you find out you’re bringing a new life into the world; the moment when you see the first ultrasound photo; the moment when you hold your baby in your arms for the first time. Love of this nature is strong and powerful. It evokes actions where you become a protector and nurturer. When those roles are threaten and you lose your control that is when unconditional love becomes deeper. Drs. Jonathan and Courtney Chism know the challenges of that kind of love because they live it everyday. Their love for their baby boy was pushed to the limits when he was diagnosis with Autism. Courtney reflected to the moments when she first learned that she was having a son. “Obviously you start to envision yourself at basketball games and football games cheering them on because you see him evolving on some pathway,” the avid sports mom said. But when your child is diagnosis with Autism you’re not certain that your visions will come true. “You learn to take one day at a time,” said Courtney. “If you base the future off what you see

Parental Advice on Loving Unconditionally When Faced with Autism

today, you would have a grim prognosis. You glorify and appreciate what you have in front of you right now.” Before Jay was officially diagnosis with autism the Chisms knowledge of Autism was limited. Courtney, being a doctor of medicine, knew Autism was prominent in young kids and left them with social impairments and developmental delays. Jonathan, having a doctorate in religion studies, had some familiarity with AutismSpeaks.Org and their initiatives. But neither parent had a vast knowledge of the disorder. So they didn’t recognize any of the signs in their son but they knew something was not all the way right. Courtney thought Jay being disengaged in some of his prolong cries was a sign but that has not been verified. However, the Chisms having an excellent pediatrician was key to pulling all the pieces together. The doctor approached the new parents with the first thoughts of Autism when Jay wasn’t talking by his first birthday. Her recommendation was speech therapy. While processing their emotions of fear, denial, anxiety, and sadness, the Chisms found strength to act for their boy. They knew that with swift actions they would their child the best chance at beating the battle with Autism. Studies

have shown that early intervention tremendously helps kids with Autism. What the Chisms didn’t know that even though Jay’s doctor said he needed speech therapy and referred him to get the treatment that the insurance company would deny it. “Neither Jonathan nor my insurance from our employers would cover the therapy,” said Courtney. “That was a huge blow.” Which heighten the stress level of the couple. Their advice to parents in similar situations is to first do your research. Learn everything you can about the disorder to best help your child. Second, pray and put it God’s hands. Ask Him to lead and guide you. Third, listen to and follow through with recommended treatment, especially during the most crucial younger years of life. Fourth, stay positive and learn to appreciate life. Following their own advice the Chisms have been able to tackle every huddle that has been thrown their way. They a found way to deal with the insurance company, dealt with their own emotions, and best of all they have learned how to best care for their son. They not only accept his differences but find that his difference are things that him the most special and shape his

character. “Being autistic is just being different and we are all different in our own unique way,” said Jonathan, who lets his son know there is nothing wrong with being different. “ It is ok to be different. That is your job as a parent to accept the differences and to help him develop confidence and a strong sense of pride of who he is.” Tapping into that sense of pride has resulted in the Chisms having a very happy, healthy, full of energy little boy that just so happens to have Autism. Jay is like any other child that likes to run outside, eat chicken nuggets, and watch his favorite cartoon “Henry Hugglemonster.” He may not talk but he can still communicate in his own way. He may stare off into space a little long but they know how to grab his attention to break him out it. His differences allow everyone just to love on him a little harder. A diagnosis of Autism can be devastating to parents at first but with the right attitude it can be a blessing in disguise. It is just how you approach the diagnosis. With lots of love, prayer, and resources, parents can help their children with Autism grown and thrive.

Autism Through a Child’s Eyes: Meet Peanut

By Bell of TotallyRandie

N

ehemiah Preston is my fiveyear-old nephew. My family affectionately calls him Peanut for his insane love of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Peanut is an extremely happy kid who is never found not smiling. He likes basketball and toy cars like most little boys. If you saw him from a far at a park with me your first thoughts would be, “That’s a happy kid.” You would never guess that happy kid was dealing with a disorder that affects one out of every 68 kids. Peanut has autism. Peanut’s mother had him at a very young age. Wanting the best for her and Peanut, I took on the responsibility of caring for Peanut until his mother could graduate high school and get on her feet. It was during this time of me loving Peanut to the extreme that I started to notice certain behaviors that alarmed me. Being the zealous aunt that I am, I took Peanut straight to the doctor. A series of tests revealed that he had autism. I was devastated. As the tears rolled down my face, my sweet little Peanut looked at me with a really long, sad face. I could tell he was confused by the tears since he was use to seeing me smile like him. Life would never be the same for either of us from that day on.

I heard of autism but as with most things until it affects you or someone you love you truly don’t know everything you need to know. All sorts of things began to swirl in my head about Peanut’s diagnosis. Would he be labeled? Would kids bully him? How successful would he be in life? How will this disorder affect him? So many questions that I did not have the answers to. In my research I learned that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication and interaction. The symptoms are present from early childhood and affect daily functioning. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability in functioning that can occur in people with ASD. Some children and adults with ASD are fully able to

perform all activities of daily living while others require substantial support to perform basic activities. Autism for Peanut means he is trapped in his body. He learns differently from his sister and cousins. He can fully comprehend what people are saying; yet he is not very audible in his verbal reply. Lucky for Peanut, his autism is rather mild. He can make eye contact

and reply verbally, but finds it difficult dressing himself and doing things that most 5 year olds know how to do. He is still learning numbers and ABC’s. He doesn’t know his colors. He sometimes goes into a space where he just stares. Those are some of the challenges Peanut has now and will probably have more in the future. But what warms my heart and makes me smile is that despite all the odds against him Peanut remains a happy little boy. He doesn’t focus on what he can’t do or the other negatives in life. He just lets his little light shine and that light touches everyone that comes in contact with him. And you know what happens then? That light gets brighter and other people’s light start to shine too. Today, Peanut is doing well. He was able to get into school early because of his learning disability and speech. He is progressing every day.

The 2016 Sugar Land Wine and Food Affair Completes its 13th Year

O

By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

n April 6 – April 10th the 13th Annual Sugar Land Wine and Food Affair held five days of festivities that showcased the talents of local wine makers, chefs, bartenders and beer craftsmen. The event kicked off with the VIP Dinner at Noah’s hosted by The Lange Twins Family Winery and Vineyard which was sold out almost immediately. Next was The Hendrick’s Gin on The Rocks Bartender’s Challenge where Five of Houston’s Best Bartenders are invited to compete for a grand prize of $1,500.0 by creating the best tasting mixed drink using the sponsor’s brand. After the judges tally up the points and award the big check, the winning cocktail becomes the official cocktail of the annual event. This year’s winner was Rebecca Burkart of Cannard, her winning recipe was called “In Dew Time”. It was a fun and lively evening; we mingled with The Special Events Team from The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. The Team’s Director Dewan Claborn added such a professional and well coordinated effort to the entire event. The VIP weekend began on Friday April 8th with The Grand Tasting at The Sugar Land Marriott. This event was an endless display of fine wines, great food, desserts, tasty plates of smoked short ribs, spicy Thai beef salads, and the star of the night for me was The Sea Bass Ravioli by Chef Ricky Cruz of Grotto’s. He created a medley of complex flavors that blended well with the wines; each bite consisted of a creamy noodle, a light sauce and the subtle taste of fish which was garnished with sliced cherry tomatoes and cilantro. Saturday was The Sip N’ Stroll which was held at Constellation Field which is the home stadium for The Sugar Land Skeeters Baseball Team. Beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at 4 p.m. the field was covered with tents, tables, and seats to accommodate the many cooking demonstrations, food and beverage sampling. While there was so much to see, taste and sample, my favorite was the medley of hot sauces offered by Big Daddy’s Hot Sauces. These condiments are some of the best mix of flavors that combine fruit, peppers, mild and hot that collide into a savory sauce that can be enjoyed with chips, eggs or even ice cream. You can order them online at: www.bigdaddyassburn.com or go to your neighborhood Whole Foods Store and all Spec’s Liquor stores that have a deli. Sunday’s Bistro Brunch wowed the crowds and closed out this Annual Fair with live music from The Mix featuring Yvonne Washington. The band had the crowd on its’ feet rocking to “Proud Mary” and other R&B Classics. The longest line formed for the Payaya that was prepared by Chef James Foote of The Victoria Country Club. Shrimp, mussels, rice, chicken, sausage, and small lima beans cooked over an open flame in front of Sugar Land’s City Hall completed the afternoon of music, food, cocktails and dance. If you don’t want to miss out on next year’s event, go to: www.sugarlandwineandfoodfair.com and sign up on the email list. Breaking Down the Mystery of Autism

W

hile Autism figures have become so common, currently affecting 1 in 68 children, it is imperative that we understand how it is currently affecting people from all walks of life. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder within the United States right now, and while there is no cure, there are ways to become educated on the disorder that can cost a family up to $60,000 a year. Parents typically notice that there are common signs of Autism when children don’t make eye contact, they play with toys repetitively in ways that are uncommon, or they may fail to respond to their name when called. There are currently no medical tests that can determine whether or not a child has Autism, however, if one sees these signs within their child, it is important that they seek the proper care from a psychologist and/or physician. One way they can determine what may be going on with a child is The Modified Checklist of Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT). You may wonder, “What if Autism is discovered later on in life?” A diagnosis of adolescents and adults should quickly involve a personal observation and seeking help from a trained specialist. A diagnosis may also give relief to someone who may have been dealing with intense uncertainties of emotional distress, the difficult issues of having trouble to socially relate, or the false idea that someone is “dumb” because they don’t learn like everyone else. If you or anyone else that you may know would like information on how to become an advocate for Autism, more facts on Autism research, or how to get more involved concerning this disorder that affects so many lives across the country, please go to autismspeaks.org.

According to Forbes, Rainieri has one of the ten largest fortunes in the Dominican Republic, with a net worth near the billion-dollar mark. In 1969, Rainieri and Theodore Kheel, a high-powered New York attorney and labor mediator, acquired a 58-million square meter lot on the eastern end of the Dominican Republic, which was covered with jungle and six miles of beach. Their first project was a 40 guest hotel called the Punta Cana Club, inaugurated two years later. In 1979, they constructed The Puntacana Hotel. The Punta Cana International Airport followed in 1984. In 1997, Rainieri and Kheel partnered with Oscar de la Renta and Julio Iglesias to start work on the Punta Cana Marina and the real estate development of the area.

he breathalyzer could be getting a companion in the future: the textalyzer, a device that could check to see if a driver’s phone was in use in the moments prior to or during a car accident according to abcnews. go.com. Wells Fargo Energy Investment Unit Sought Risky Deals, Faces Losses Reuters.com

W

hen Cubic E n e r g y Inc’s bankruptcy plan took effect on March 1, shareholders of the Dallas-based oil and gas company were wiped out. Among the losers was Wells Fargo & Co. The bank had a nearly 10 percent stake in Cubic Energy at the end of 2015 - worth more than $25 million at the company’s peak - through a private equity-style unit called Wells Fargo Energy Capital. The whole sector has been devastated by a 60 percent plunge in oil prices from highs of over $100 a barrel in 2014. The price drop has squeezed energy firms, especially smaller ones, and made it harder for them to pay back loans.

17 Million Have Received Minimum Wage Increases Since 2012, Report Claims CNN Newswire

E

fforts to raise the minimum wage have put more money in the pockets of roughly 17 million low income workers since 2012, a new report claims. The report released Wednesday by the National Employment Law Project claims the “Fight for $15” -- a movement to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour -- has played a crucial role in these increases. The Fight for $15 movement began in November 2012 and the study by NELP, a workers rights group, looks at employees who have received pay increases since then. The report evaluated minimum pay increases that resulted from city and state ordinances, executive actions and corporate policies. Most of the workers included in the report have already begun to receive increases, which will build up gradually.

To help address this issue, Uber today announced the launch of a new pilot program in Houston, UberACCESS. UberACCESS is available at the same rates as uberX, making it much more affordable than a taxi.

This is the largest strike in the United States since Verizon workers last walked off the job in 2011, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That strike involved 45,000 workers. Most of the striking workers service the company’s landline phone business and FiOS broadband network -- not the much larger Verizon Wireless network. They have gone without a contract since August, and their union, the Communication Workers of America, says it is fighting to get Verizon to come to the table with a better offer.
