Retraction: Stuart Jackson Article
In the February 25, 2015 issue of Houston Style Magazine Fort Bend ISD Trustee Pos. 6 candidate Stuart Jackson was featured. The author has consulted on Jackson’s campaign, but Jackson was not interviewed and was unaware of the article’s content until after publication. Jackson felt the article was largely accurate but when put in context with the image the author selected, it implied he was African-American. He is not, and requested the magazine print an immediate clarification. Neither Jackson nor Levine intended to mislead voters. Houston Style Magazine apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.

aced with a hostile, do-nothing Congress committed only to obstruction, President Obama announced that he would act on his own if necessary, using his pen, his phone and his platform. Last weekend, we witnessed the power of that commitment, as he shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro at the Summit of Americas in Panama, moving to normalize relations with Cuba after more than 50 years of hostility. With that act -- soon to be followed by striking Cuba from the list of terrorist nations -- the president opened up a new era with our neighbors to the South. No longer will the United States stand apart in its fixation on isolating Cuba. The effort to overthrow and then isolate Cuba began over 55 years ago. In 1960, the U.S. still resorted regularly to “gunboat diplomacy” across the hemisphere, intervening in countries

amilies from every ethnicity and every Houston area filled north Houston’s Sylvester Turner Park this past Saturday for the veteran State Representative and Houston Mayor front-runner’s eighth annual Family Fun Day at The Park festivity complete with an array of music, carnival food, games, rides and political aspirants hoping to ally with the host. “I am pleased that we were able to hold Family Day for the thousands of people who came for the entertainment, food and companionship we provided,” said State Rep. Turner taking a break from being in the middle of a busy legislative session in Austin that he promises will be his final session after more than 25 years of representing his home blocks from the park and the neighborhood where he grew up before earning his Harvard law degree. “I live in this neighborhood and I always have. Other than my years at Harvard Law School I have always lived in this city that I love and that I love serving,” he said. State Rep. Turner was jubilant despite intermittent rain. It is estimated that more than nearly 10,000 people found their way to the park. “The rain came but everyone

Obama Leads U.S.-Cuba Relations into New Era largely on behalf of U.S. multinationals and the local landed gentry. Fifty-five years ago, South Africa was still under apartheid and Africa was still largely colonized. In our own country, segregation was still enforced in the South. Blacks rode on the back of the bus and were routinely deprived of their right to vote. The U.S. was just beginning to escalate its intervention into Vietnam. China, ruled by Mao, was supposedly allied with the Soviet Union and unalterably committed to communism. We built the wall around Cuba even as the wall still divided Berlin and the Cold War divided Europe. Over the years, the world was transformed, yet somehow we sustained the wall around Cuba. Our neighbors to the south grew more independent -- and more democratic. We came to celebrate much of the world that Castro supported -- Mandela free and South Africa democratic, Angola free, the covert wars in Central America over, civil rights transforming America. Instead of warring on Vietnam, we now include it in trade negotiations for a new partnership. Yet amid all this change, the wall stayed up around Cuba. Presidents came and went. The Cubans turned out to be helpful in the war on drugs and the war on terror. We made Castro into a symbol of independence for developing nations in the hemisphere and beyond.
Cuban doctors and teachers were dispatched across this hemisphere and Africa, dispensing aid not revolution. But walls create shadows, foster ignorance and fear. The embargo continues -- only Congress can lift that -- but at the Summit of the Americas, President Obama brought down the wall, meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro. This was the first time the two nations’ leaders met for substantive talks since Vice President Richard Nixon met with Fidel Castro in 1959. “The cold war has been over for a long time,” the president said in his opening remarks at the summit. “I am not interested in having battles, frankly, that began before I was born.” Castro praised the president, calling him an “honest man” from a “humble background,” saying, “I admire him.” This historic meeting can open a new era in U.S. relations with the hemisphere. It doesn’t solve all the problems between Cuba and the U.S., but, as the president said, it puts us on a “path toward the future.” Here is President Obama at his best. He has always argued that we should talk unconditionally with our adversaries, even while agreeing only conditionally. Now he has done the nation an inestimable service of ending the failed policy toward Cuba and opening
the possibility of new relations with our neighbors to the south. The U.S. will gain in influence in the hemisphere. Cuba will change far faster with the wall down than it did behind the wall. These days, the Washington press corps seems fixated on the 2016 presidential election that is more than a year and a half away. But before we turn our attention to the contenders vying to be the next president, we might pay attention to the president we have. This weekend, President Obama made America stronger by discarding a failed policy long out of date. For that we should all be grateful. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at visit www.stylemagazine.com.
Turner’s Family Fun Day Draws Nearly 10,000 for Festivity stayed. My thanks and immense gratitude goes to performers from Hispanic Mariachis to Asian Lion Dancers and local performers that came to share with us their talent, to sing and dance in the rain for our attendees. I’m especially grateful to the more than 500 community volunteers that helped make this a success and the amazing amount of law enforcement that came together for this to be an event where families with young children and elderly parents and grandparents could feel safe to enjoy themselves,” he said. City Controller Ronald Green and former State District Judge Dwight Jefferson in the race to succeed Green as Controller, State Rep. Boris Miles, Harris County Democratic Chair Lane Lewis who is running for Houston City Council Pos. 1, Houston Community College Trustee Chris Oliver who is running also for City Council Pos. 1, Houston ISD School Board President Rhonda Skillern Jones and former Lone Star College Trustee Randy Bates were among the public officials there. Both Skillern Jones and Bates have suggested that should Turner succeed this year for Mayor of Houston. They will run next

year for his House District 139 seat. With his nearly $1 million in his campaign account, his early endorsements from the Houston Police Officers Association and other police organizations, the professional fire fighters and city employees unions and support ranging from State Rep. Ron Reynolds and City Council Member Larry Green in the southwest to US Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and State Rep. Armando Walle in the northeast, State Rep. Turner is considered now the frontrunner in the ever crowding contest to succeed term limited Houston Mayor Annise Parker. The park at 2800 Little York

in Acres Homes was officially named by city council for State Rep. Turner in March 2006 following his extensive work to earn citywide support from firms such as AT&T, CenterPoint Energy and Southwestern Bell, plus $1.5 million from Texas Park and Wildlife and $500,000 from the city. The funds were used to add picnic tables, baseball fields, a covered pavilion, landscaping, a small wetlands area, an education center, boardwalks and nature trails. Within a half-mile radius of the park, there are about six or seven schools in the area and I know it is success from our students at our schools that will lead to their success in life and ultimately success for across our city,” he said. BOOK REVIEW Explore the Cosmos like Neil deGrasse Tyson
N By
Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
ighttime is absolutely your favorite time. Some people choose to hang out with friends after dark. Some go to movies, listen to music, or just go to sleep. But you – as soon as it’s dark, you lay down somewhere quiet and look up. That’s where the stars are, and in the new book by CAP Saucier, you can learn to “Explore the Cosmos like Neil deGrasse Tyson.” Born a few days before the National Aeronautics and Space Administration began, Neil deGrasse Tyson likes to say he’s the same age as NASA. By the time he was nine years old, he was “in love with the night sky” and at eleven, he knew he wanted to be an astrophysicist (a scientist that studies the universe). He was so fascinated by planets and stars that he almost got in trouble with a telescope when he was a teenager. Tyson’s parents both stressed to him that skipping college was not an option and so, though he wasn’t a great student in high school, Tyson went to Harvard, then to the U of Texas and to Columbia University. Why, you might ask, didn’t he become an astronaut? Back then, the program wasn’t open to African Americans, so being an astronaut never even entered his mind. In finding beauty in the night sky, Tyson is not alone. More than 2,500 years ago, the Greeks looked upward and tried to understand what they saw. Other cultures studied the heavens, too; Ptolemy tried to count the stars, and stopped at a thousand. In recent years, we’ve learned more about the cosmos than ever before, but there’s still so much we don’t know. To study the stars, you need to understand light and physics. You’ll need to know about galaxies and
By CAP Saucier
Nebulas, which look different and have descriptive names. You’ll want to find out the truth about black holes, and why you never, ever want to be “spaghettified.” And above all, says Tyson, stay in school, learn math, and go for the best education you can get. Even if you don’t end up studying stars, that’s always a good path to take. I was pleasantly surprised and a little daunted, both, by “Explore the Cosmos like Neil deGrasse Tyson.” The delight comes in the biography part of this book. Author CAP Saucier lets us explore the life of Neil deGrasse Tyson, from his childhood to his fascinating career today and what he thinks about the future of space exploration. Along the way, we’re given an education on the universe and what’s in it. That part, however, can be formidable; the language is more advanced than I would have liked to see in a book for middle-graders. Kids who tackle those sections will need a better-than-average understanding of astroscience, since those pages aren’t otherwise very kid-friendly. I think maybe a science-loving 9-year-old could try this book but it’s really better-suited for someone older. For a sharp child with her head in the stars, “Explore the Cosmos like Neil deGrasse Tyson” is pretty cosmic. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

elcome Spring and The Twelfth Annual Sugar Land Wine and Food Fair. The five day event began on April 8, 2015 and the festivities kicked off with La Dolce Vita, a seated five course dinner served by celebrated Houston Chefs, which was held at the Sugar Land Marriott Hotel. On Thursday, April 9th, The Club at Riverstone hosted The New Amersterdam Vodka on the Rocks Bartender Challenge. The contest was won by Nathan Reffell of 1919 Wine & Mixology and his signature beverage called EL NIÑO COLLINS, and it is amazing. This beverage features New Amsterdam Citron and Coconut Vodka; it was light, refreshing, and cool on the palette. The flavors of this top-notch cocktail blended well into a libation that showcased the subtle sweetness of the coconut vodka, the tanginess of the Citron, and the freshness of the mineral water. The recipe can be viewed by clicking here: http://www. sugarlandwineandfoodaffair.com/event/ OnTheRocksBartendersChallenge The weekend started with the Grand Tasting at The Sugar Land Marriott, and the party of all parties began on Saturday, April 11th at the Sip N’ Stroll which was held at Imperial Sugar Factory. When the gates opened, the VIP crowd was welcomed with Chef James Foote a glass of cold bubbling Prosecco and the sound of the Platinum Player Zydeco Band. We followed the crowd to The Maine Lobster rolls that were waiting on the interior. Maine Lobster Pot Pie handed out succulent little plates of fresh mouth watering lobster served on a toasted hotdog bun. Maine and Texas make great pairs because that juicy lobster meat went down well with a glass of Llano Moscato Wine, which is the product of Llano Estacado Winery out of Lubbock, Texas. To learn Lamb Cheek and Salad more about this winery, visit their website: www.llanowine.com to view their full wine lists, products and events. Enough of the savory and now to the sweets, Churrasco’s crew were on hand to share their decadent Tres Leches cake, which was creamy, very sweet, and had a crowd gathering at their table. On the other hand, the ladies from Jus Poppin were in the building to show off their Chicago Style popcorn flavors; cheesy, caramel and their “crazy mix”; which is a combination of both caramel and the cheesy flavors. These busy popcorn makers are local; they manufacture their treats in Stafford, Texas; their website is www.justpoppinpopcorn.com All good things start with a rain shower and end with the sun pouring out of the sky and warming up the place; at least, that’s what happened on Sunday, April 12th the day of The Bistro Brunch. The crowd was treated to Proseco, Bloody Mary’s, Salty Dogs and the Paella made by Chef James Foote. A line formed on the steps of Sugar Land City Hall while the fire was lit, the rice was cooked, the shrimp, mussels, clams, lobster and chicken were added to an over sized pan that held the concoction that was a true crowd pleaser. The entire dish was well seasoned; the rice was cooked perfectly; the proteins held the flavor of the broth while it was served hot to the crowd of hungry patrons. While we enjoyed our dish, Kelly Dean entertained the crowd with upbeat tunes of classic R& B and Jazz. 9 Things to Know About Legal Cannabis
H
ooray! Pot is kind of legal . People who’ve never been high are suddenly wondering how much an eighth really is. And those that could spot an eighth of weed from across a room can now, in some places, walk into a store and buy it. (Try Mary Mart, Bud Commander or the Happy Crop Shoppe – all stores in Washington state.) But rules are still hazy about where you can buy pot and who can smoke. It gets more complicated for those who want to sell it.
Here’s what you need to know: 1. Anyone over 21-years old can buy marijuana in Colorado and Washington. There are 833 recreational pot shops in Colorado and 123 in Washington.
8

2. You can smoke it legally in Alaska, D.C. and -- by the end of the year -- in Oregon, as long as you’re older than 21. But it won’t be legal to buy it in those states for at least another year while lawmakers hammer out the details. It could take longer in D.C. 3. No one can smoke weed in public, anywhere. 4. Medical marijuana is legal in 23 states, and D.C.
Corner will go to special city projects, like upgrading the local playground. 7. There’s still a black market for pot, even where it’s legal. 8. Everyone in Colorado could get a pot tax refund. Thanks to Colorado’s new pot tax and a quirky state law, residents may get a special one-time tax refund next year. It’s expected to be about $58 million distributed among 5.4 million residents.
5. smoking marijuana. Even if you show up for work stone cold sober, you can be
states. But that’s being challenged in court.
9. Banking is still a huge problem for pot shops. Pot isn’t illegal on the federal level, which means many shops can’t get bank accounts, since banks are regulated by the feds. Retailers have to pay employees and taxes in cash, which makes 6. There is actually one the business dangerous. But there government-run pot store. is legislation has been proposed to make banking easier for selling Washington State called Cannabis medical marijuana sellers.

from the government: “Recent animal studies have shown that marijuana can kill certain cancer cells and reduce the size of others. Evidence from one animal study suggests that extracts from whole-plant marijuana can shrink one of the most serious types of brain tumors. Research in mice showed that these extracts, when used with radiation, increased the cancer-killing effects of the radiation.” [The Daily Caller]
Texas Attempts to Legalize Medical Marijuana By Mike Adams
T
exas lawmakers are fighting to bring a comprehensive medical marijuana program to the Lone Star State in 2015. Last week, legislation was submitted aimed at legalizing the cultivation and distribution of cannabis for patients suffering from a variety of debilitating conditions ranging from cancer to post-traumatic stress disorder. The latest proposal, House Bill 3785, is a companion measure to piggyback Senate Bill 1839, both of which intend to establish a statewide medical marijuana program, allowing patients with a recommendation from a doctor to have access to the herb. If passed, the Department of State Health Services would oversee the regulatory affairs of every aspect of the program, from cultivation to dispensary. “The law currently does not reflect marijuana’s legitimate medical use and denies access to patients, such as veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, citizens suffering with cancer and severe aliments of the aging,” State Representative Marisa Marquez, the bill’s sponsor, said in a statement. “By continuing to deny access to patients,” she continued, “we limit the rights of families to seek the best possible treatment for conditions that do not respond to other drugs or therapies. should create paths, and not obstacles, in allowing doctors to recommend medicine that has been shown to work.” Unlike the proposal submitted earlier this year by State Representatives Stephanie Kirk and Kevin Eltife, a measure aimed at providing restricted access to CBD, the non-intoxicating compound of the cannabis plant, Marquez’s bill is a giant step towards the legalization of the entire plant in an effort to deliver effective medicine to a larger number of patients. “Every year, thousands of Texans are diagnosed with cancer, seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, and other debilitating illnesses,” said Caitlin Dunklee, campaign director with Texans for Medical Freedom, adding that this legislation is exactly what sick Texans need. In February 2014, a survey by the University of Texas in association with the Texas Tribune found that nearly 80 percent of Texas residents support legalizing medical marijuana for the seriously ill. annabis kills cancer cells and that’s a fact. However, it’s a plain fact the federal government has tried to hide or dismiss throughout marijuana’s prohibition. As more studies and facts surrounding the medical benefits of marijuana, hiding these truths becomes increasingly impossible by the day. A recent admission by government branch NIDA (the National Institute on Drug Abuse) finally relays of message of truth
This admission comes on the heels of influential Senators introducing the CARERS act, a bill that would effectively decriminalize cannabis and end prohibition. While not without merit, the admission by NIDA seems like the folding of a cheap and fake suit once and for all: it’s simply not logical or plausible to argue against marijuana’s medical effects, even if you’re the government with an ulterior motive. And as marijuana becomes a prime issue in the 2016 election, whichever candidate wins that race will likely do so by embracing the rise of reason in America.
Should Marijuana Be A Medical Option?
I
n 1970, the US Congress placed marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act because they considered it to have “no accepted medical use.” Since then, 23 of 50 US states and DC have legalized the medical use of marijuana. PROPONENTS of medical marijuana argue that it can be a safe and effective treatment for the symptoms of cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, pain, glaucoma, epilepsy, and other conditions. They cite dozens of peer-reviewed studies, prominent medical organi-

zations, major government reports, and the use of marijuana as medicine throughout world history. OPPONENTS of medical marijuana argue that it is too dangerous to use, lacks FDA-approval, and that various legal drugs make marijuana use unnecessary. They say marijuana is addictive, leads to harder drug use, interferes with fertility, impairs driving ability, and injures the lungs, immune system, and brain. They say that medical marijuana is a front for drug legalization and recreational use. What are your thoughts?

Medical Marijuana Gains Momentum in Congress

illie Nelson is going even greener. The 81-year-old black belt who still smokes every day told The Daily Beast he’ll be launching the cannabis-centric brand titled “Willie’s Reserve. While down at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, Willie “let it slip to the reporter that he’s got his marijuana brand in the works. While Willie himself didn’t sit down with the media outlet to discuss his new venture, a spokesperson for the country artist did--and the statements are quite revealing. And from the sounds of, Willie isn’t just cultivating a brand--he’s cultivating a crop as well. The gist of “Willie’s Reserve is that the brand will offer a “connoisseur grade line of cannabis where marijuana is legal. Along with herb, the brand will produce bongs and likely a myriad of cannabis-related, branded accessories. Fortunately, “Willie’s Reserve isn’t just a shop--it’s going to also be an activism hub. Really he wants it, at the end of the day, to envelop what his personal morals and convictions are. So from the store itself to how they’ll work with suppliers and how things are operated, it’s going to be very re ! #
The brand hopes to launch “in the next calendar year. Like the Bob Marley venture, Willie himself isn’t actually putting in the work here--he is 81 after all. But his family is in charge of the operation and sounds intent on keeping the Willie integrity intact. Stay tuned Colorado, you may soon literally be rolling Willie up. Major League Baseball’s new commissioner hinted the league’s next expansion teams could take professional baseball out of the continental United States and into Mexico. Commissioner Rob Manfred didn’t give too much away during an interview with Canadian Rob Manfred media, but he did say that the Mexican and Canadian markets would be places where the league is looking to expand according to Latino Fox News. While the MLB currently is seeking to make baseball work in existing markets, especially in struggling ones like Tampa Bay and Oakland, Manfred added that if relocating to a new area is best for the league than he would consider moving a current team to either Mexico or Canada. For nearly 45 years, manufacturers of traditional cigarettes have agreed to a ban on television advertising.
