COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

The community’s lack of trust i n C . P. D . ( C h i c a g o P o l i c e Department) is justified,” so concluded the blistering, in-depth report of the Police Accountability Task Force, set up by Mayor Rahm Emanual after the uproar surrounding the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald. After a four-month investigation, the task force pulled no punches. “CPD’s own data,” it concluded, “gives validity to the widely held belief the police have no regard for the sanctity of life when it comes to people of color.” It detailed a long pattern of institutionalized racial abuse: unjustified stops, physical abuse, torture, detention without counsel, shootings, and more. The task force backed its conclusions with data drawn from the CPD’s own files. Blacks, whites and

POLITICAL By Burt

Chicago’s Shame Hispanics each make up about onethird of the population of Chicago. Yet African Americans constituted three out of every four people that CPD tried to Taser. In addition, 74 percent of the 404 people shot by the Chicago police between 2008 and 2015 were black. The Task Force also noted that the system itself was designed to be unaccountable. It singled out police union contracts, urging changes in clauses that “make it easy for officers to lie in official reports,” give officers 24 hours to get their stories right, ban anonymous citizen complaints, and more. The contracts “have essentially turned the code of silence into official policy.” The task force chair, former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot, called the report a “call to arms.” It made more than 100 recommendations for change, including creating a new independent civilian oversight panel and a dedicated, independent police inspector general. Two Chicago aldermen have already introduced draft ordinances to move on these recommendations. The task force recommendations included everything from diversifying the police force, to adding body cams, to changing police patrols and more. Mayor Rahm Emanuel met with

the task force to review the report. His curt public response was disappointing: “I don’t really think you need a task force to know that we have racism in America, we have racism in Illinois, or that there’s racism that exists in the city of Chicago and obviously could be in our department ... The question is, what are we going to do to confront it and make the changes in not only personnel but in policies to reflect, I think, the values that make up the diversity of our city?” Emanuel said his “general attitude” was to “look at everything they say,” but then went silent, saying he wanted to review the recommendations before commenting. Chicago, with the number of shootings rising in recent months, needs an effective police force that has the community’s trust. According to a recent Chicago Tribune editorial, this is the seventh such report, each generally issued after another corruption-related scandal. Real reform can no longer be put off. We need serious steps to diversify the police force, to train police, to stop racial profiling, to restructure police-community relations, to enforce accountability and the law. If Mayor Emanuel won’t lead, the City Council need not wait to take action. And the

city’s powerful business community also must demand accountability. As The New York Times wrote in a powerful editorial on “Chicago’s shame,” “Chicago’s business leaders should be sickened that it took the execution of a teenager for the city’s elected leaders to begin to face up to the truth about the Police Department -- a truth that the black community has been saying for decades.” Yet, even if the task force’s recommendations are adopted, that is only a first step. The CPD is guilty of a long, racially biased institutionalized pattern of abuse. But they are also tasked with enforcing order over communities in despair, plagued by poverty, unemployment, drugs, guns and a lack of hope. We must reform the police. But we also need a program for urban development, jobs, schools and hope. Without that, the streets will remain hard and ugly, and the people will continue to suffer. You can write to the Rev. Ron Reynolds Stands His Ground at Chasewood

attling continuing rain and flood waters this past Tuesday, April 19th, State Rep. Ron Reynolds joined his constituents at a packed Chasewood Club House forum in the City of Houston as part of Fort Bend, where his neighbors had been deluged with attacks on him from his run-off opponent Angelique Bartolomew. My Christian faith has taught me to, Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. My very religious grandmother repeatedly told me that, Those who live in a glass house shouldn›t throw rocks. She and the preachers and teachers that had made up my family for generations taught me the principles to live by that have led me to choose to never run a negative campaign,” said Reynolds the frontrunner that in the March 1st Democratic Primary won 48.5 percent overall and won first in every precinct in his diverse suburban district that stretches across most Missouri City, Stafford, Meadows, Arcola and Fresno areas. “I’m a lifelong Democrat and currently serve as the House Democratic Whip. I’ve never said a negative remark about my opponent, Angelique Bartholomew. However, she has chosen

to run a negative smear campaign against me as her reason for running in this race. Despite denying when asked that she’s a former First Vice President of the Fort Bend County Republican Women’s PAC and voted in Republican Primaries not just to support Rick Perry but specifically a Republican for District Attorney,” said Reynolds, who recalled an earlier race in 2010 when

April 21 - April 27, 2016

12-year-incumbent Dora Olivo sent out negative campaign pieces on him. Yet, he nonetheless defeated her at the height of the Tea Party movement to become the first African American elected to the Texas Legislature from Fort Bend County since Reconstruction. “Angelique Bartholomew mentions civil lawsuits against me in her press release and yes that happens when you are a licensed lawyer. While she glosses over the fact that she filed multiple bankruptcies to cheat her creditors from getting paid when she was sued and additionally, Angelique Bartholomew talks about my ethics while failing to mention that she falsely has held herself out as an attorney when she never passed the bar license exam, and attended an unaccredited law school in Alabama,” he continued. I’m a committed Christian family man married to retired school teacher Dr. Jonita Reynolds and the father dedicated to our three young children. I teach my children and work to be example for children at our church and throughout our community that being positive and polite is productive. I reject all the Donald Trump-style negative politics being promoted by

Angelique Bartholomew,” he said in response to her bringing claims he does not represent the district well while audience members such as leaders of the local Houston Super Neighborhood Council challenged her for having never been there before now. When asked why he is running for re-election Reynolds said as a member of the House Committees on Elections and Environmental Regulations he knows there are issues important in his district that need to have attention. Having been voted by his colleagues as “Freshman Legislator of the Year” and “Public Servant of the Year” by the Houston Minority Contractors Association he said his focus is Fort Bend in the May 24th runoff race where the deadline to register to vote is April 24th and early vote begins May 16th. local woman has tested positive for the Zika Virus according to Fox 26. The woman, who was tested at Legacy Community Health, lived in El Salvador before coming to Houston in 2016. Her contraction of the virus is unclear. Health officials can’t determine if she was infected by mosquitoes or through sexual transmission. The infection by mosquito is reasoned to be concerned in Houston, as the number of mosquitoes will surely rise due to the recent floods. Pregnant women are reminded not to travel to Central and South America. Houstonians remember the Zika Virus can be transmitted sexually.

uick! Name the first three words that come to your mind when you hear the word SPA. For me it was expensive, relaxing, and huge WASTE of time. Ok technically that’s six words. Call me not a tom boy, call it un-ladylike, but I don’t understand the reason behind a facial or a massage that is going to cost me an arm and a leg to get, only for those parts to need the same “rejuvenation” again. That is until I visited Sanctuary Spa. I have been to spas all over the world and nothing compares to the three things I’ve experienced at Sanctuary Spa.

would mean a longer school day or school year to make up for those missed day. and fresh lemonade from Chick-Fil-A, or a full tank of gas; customer service makes a difference on my list. Sanctuary Spa has some of the best customer service I have ever experienced at a spa. The wine was a perfect touch to relax me. They took out time to get to know me out side of the “fill out your allergies” on paper. They checked on me and made sure I was comfortable. I really appreciated it. They made me feel like I was home. The Yoni Steam: Of course, you’ve heard of it right? You haven’t! Well that is because most people call it the V-Steam. Its been seen on reality shows such as the Braxton’s. Gwyneth Paltrow even got one. Sanctuary Spa is the only spa in Houston that does the Yoni (Korean for Vagina) Steam. I was super excited, as I

as well as adult coloring classes (one of my favs). Could you imagine going to a spa where they take care of your exterior and interior? Located in the River Oaks District, Sanctuary Spa is now my go to spot when I need that extra rejuvenation. If you decide to visit, tell them TotallyRandie sent you!

The Innovation This is probably the most exciting part of my visit. Sanctuary Spa is stepping up the spa game with there innovation. At their 32nd anniversary they had an inflatable boxing ring that they looked to bring back every month. I thought this was amazing. Often we look to take care of our physical health, but we forget to take care of our mental health. The boxing ring made me think of ways to use it in promoting mental health as well as therapy for married couples. Think about it, one of the biggest problems with couples is communication. How amazing would it be for them to come once month, box it out in the ring and tell each other what bothers them? In addition to the boxing ring, Sanctuary Spa has meditation classes

BOOK REVIEW By Terri

The Blackbirds

Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

Y

ou and your girls are birds of a feather. You flock together, preen together, share your nest when needed and, while you happily sing one another’s praises, you’d never open your beak to spill their secrets. Then again, as in the new book “The Blackbirds” by Eric Jerome Dickey, you’d never crow about all the details of your own life, either. A mere birthday wasn’t good enough for Indigo Abdulrahaman. Oh, no - she got a birth month. She decreed it, planned it, and made her friends follow along with her wishes. A strong-willed woman born to Nigerian parents, Indigo was the tallest of the four women, dark-skinned, with a hunger for the finer things – including men, of which she had two. And when a woman caught Indigo’s eye, she wasn’t above giving that a go, too. Kwanzaa Browne spent the weeks before her birthday crying over a man: she caught her fiancé cheating with a Brazilian woman, which was the last straw for Kwanzaa. It would take a lot for her to forget her ex. A lot – including, perhaps, a romance with a handsome man she’d been watching for months. Kwanzaa snagged him three weeks before Destiny Jones’ birthday, which didn’t matter to Destiny; she had nothing to celebrate. The man she loved didn’t know an important truth about her, and she didn’t know how to tell him - but before she could figure it out, he learned of her fame-not-fame, and it threatened to ruin everything. As for Ericka Stockwell, some things were already in ruins by the time her birthday arrived: her once-abusive mother was around again, as was cancer

for the second time. Even so, grateful for life, Ericka’s bucket list was full that anniversary of her birth, and it included finding the Love of Her Life. Unfortunately, once she found him, she knew she could never share the good news with her friends… Aside from the gorgeous cover, size is likely the first thing you’ll notice about “The Blackbirds.” At just over 500 pages, it’s a brick – and I daresay it’s an unnecessary one, at that. Don’t get me wrong: there’s a decent plot here; Oh-My-Goodness twists; and characters that are gorgeous, loyal, and cheated-upon every few pages. Since I love a good scandal, wow, that was fun - until those characters launched into mattress gymnastics and cutesy raunch-code, both of which become tiresome in short order. Cut half the ubiquitous (and rather humdrum) bedroom scenes and most of the silly faux sex-words, and I’d have been just fine. Even so, I would’ve missed the action usually found in more recent Eric Jerome Dickey novels. Sigh. Much as I gleefully anticipate author Dickey’s novels, I didn’t think this wordy one was his best – but it’s not the worst, either. It’s not as good as his thrillers, not as good as “One Night,” but better than his more-erotic novels. So cautiously, I guess I’d say don’t discount “The Blackbirds.” It has issues, yes, but diehard fans may still crow about it. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

he 2016 Chevrolet Colorado 4WD Z71 has definitely upped the ante when it comes to other midsize trucks in its class. General Motors proved that they get it and has announced that in addition to having fresh fuel-economy figures for the 2016 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado diesel trucks in hand, it also has an EPA “Certificate of Conformity” that declares them totally compliant with emissions laws. Jump into the driver seat and experience what this 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the year winner has to offer! New for 2016 drivers can expect a new Duramax 2.8L turbo–diesel with an enhanced multicolored driver information display and MyLink with phone intergration technology, featuring Apple CarPlay capability. The 4WD diesel-powered Colorado is EPA-certified for 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway giving you a real bang for your buck at the gas pump. This being the first diesel review, the MPG left our auto reviewer very impressed with nearly 600 miles to a full gallon. Cracking the 30-mpg mark has been truckmakers’ goal for some time, so for the 4WD mid-size GM twins to do so. The tested Colorado 4WD Z71 had an M.S.R.P. of $41,905.00, including freight. Adding to those mentioned above, the options on hand were rear vision camera, remote keyless entry, airbags (driver, passenger, side-impact, rear seat and side head curtain), remote vehicle start (a plus for rainy/colds days & the air conditioner cools or heats according to the outside temp) and stability control with

traction control. The base engine for the Colorado is a 4-cylinder Duramax diesel engine that makes 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. An available 3.6-liter V6 puts out 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard for both engines. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but four-wheel drive is optional (as the model tested was 4WD). When properly equipped, the truck can tow up to 7,000 pounds, which needless to say, outclasses the competition. The interior of the redesigned Colorado is said to be well above the quality seen in the previous generation. The build quality and materials used make the truck a much more compelling option for buyers. The look is also more modern, complete with a modern

layout that involves few physical buttons. The interior is mostly dark plastics, but on the upper-trim levels some silver accent pieces are included. New features like the smart phone integration and Chevy MyLink interface make ownership much more convenient. The seating and space is relatively comfortable, making the Colorado a much better option for venturing on a long road trip and very appealing to big and tall drivers. Even the rear seat passengers have enough room that fairly tall adults can sit in comfortably. While driving this truck, road and wind noises are very slim to none. Even though the pickup truck is a rough and tumble vehicle, it has a soft enough ride that passengers aren’t likely to complain, even when driving on rough roads. Overall, the 2016 Chevy Colorado is built with safety in mind while still satisfying drivers every need. With lots of tech and safety features and a “out of this world” gas mileage — what more could you ask for out of a midsize truck?! Visit your local Chevrolet dealership today to see this vehicle in person! For more information, visit www.Chevy.com or www.GMC.com

J

ust a few hours arriving into Dallas, TX and John Cena is living up to his name, as not only a Make A Wish ambassador, but now as the Tapout brand ambassador. The business savvy media attire we’re accustomed to from Cena, was replaced by workout shorts, while sporting his Tapout t-shirt. Tapout, a global hard body fitness and training brand recently re-launched by WWE and Authentic Brands Group, announced that its performance apparel line for men is available in nearly 300 JCPenney stores and at jcp.com, with plans to launch a women’s collection this summer. During the interview Cena stated, “Regardless if you’re an elite level athlete, entry level into the fitness industry, or if you’re just trying to achieve a goal, there is a product for you and that’s what’s great about the line”. The Tapout performance apparel collection for men includes a range of training and compression tees, tank tops, pants and shorts featuring Tapout’s new, contemporary branding. At JCPenney, sale prices range from $12.99 for graphic tees to $32.99 for compression shorts. Cena explains in detail about the fabric, “I tend to like the cotton plex stuff because it fits me right; other people go for more a dry fit look”. The line ensures comfort and performance with the use of stretch and moisture-managing fabrics that allow optimal function. The Tapout women’s line will boast similar performance features, offering sports bras, tank tops, tees, shorts and capris. WrestleMania weekend brings fans from all over the world, and with the partnership with Tapout and JCPenney; everyone gets to witness that chaos. “If you haven’t been a part of it, if you haven’t experienced what WrestleMania week,” Cena said. “Put it on your bucket list, try to do it once in your life, the excitement doesn’t stop. It really is something special to be a part of”. Fans would soon get to see their favorite star, as the hundreds waited in line to help JCPenney make this a wonderful announcement. But the moment that made John Cena such a great choice for ambassador for Tapout, happened once he was released to the public for signings; and his first picture was with a young kid in a wheel chair. The WWE, Tapout and JCPenney brought a lifetime experience to the fans, and now the fans get to workout and support the official fitness and training partner of the WWE, Tapout is promoted across WWE’s global platforms including TV programming, WWE Network, pay-perview broadcasts, live events, digital and social media. WWE Superstars and Divas wear Tapout apparel during their fitness and training activities.

Changing Times: Former Slave Replaces Slave Owner as New Face of the $20 Bill Of course, these moves have some supporters and some haters. Representative Mark Takano tweeted,” A woman born into slavery is going to replace a slave owner on $20 bill, that’s a beautiful thing. Steve Harvey tweeted, “ I’m gonna need my pockets full of Tubmans!” Shonda Rhimes tweeted, “ We got $20 Freedom Mama Without the Drama of messing with the $10 Founding Fathers Without a Father. What are your thoughts on the changes coming to America’s money?

arriet Tubman is one of America’s heroes that is often not talked about. Sure you hear her name during Black History Month but she never has gotten the true justice, honor, and respect as a hero of the slavery movement. She risked her life making 13 or more mission to free slaves, thereby saving their lives and keeping their families together. And one she lead them to freedom she didn’t let them go but she established them by securing jobs. She was a fighter. Going up against slave owners, she was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in a war guided raid. She is a true symbol of courage and freedom. What does Andrew Jackson symbolize? Controversy. It said that he was one of the most controversial Presidents. From the removal of the Indians from the southeast to the force of violence if South Carolina secedes from the Union, Jackson ruled with an iron fist. He seemed to love to fight. His victory over British at New Orleans in 1812 was one of his highlights that was not surrounded in controversy. Tubman and Jackson have one thing in common. They are both fighters. Fighting is what made them iconic though they were on opposite sides. Jackson symbols bondage 10

in the persecution of people and Tubman symbols deliverance in the freedom of people. Jackson symbolizes what America use to be. A country that thought woman should be seen and not heard, where people were enslaved and all was not right. Whereby Harriet Tubman symbolizes the new America that is diverse where people are free to go, as they like, say what you like, and do what they like. Those separate identities will be bridge together on the $20 bill. U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew made the historic announcement that not only would a woman go on the front of the $20 but Andrew Jackson would be on the back of the bill. Tubman is not the only new face coming to your money. The $5 bill get a new look with a look back shows significant events that happened at the Lincoln Memorial like Opera singer Marian Anderson’s 1939 concert and Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech. The $10 tells the story of women’s suffrage and their struggle for the right to vote on its back. Women spotlighted include Lucretia Mott, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul.

HEALTH1/2-Page HISD AD TEMPLATE By Dr. Lovell A. Jones, Health Editor

Lovell’s Food For Thought: Improving the Education of our Kids Improves the Future Well-Being of Our Nation

T

he other morning I came across an op ed piece I posted on Facebook five years ago. Given the topic, it should have gone viralm but it didn’t. It was only liked by four people. It didn’t mean that only four people liked the content or that four people read it. I would suspect that a few more people did read it. However, what it reinforced is a perception that we lack a true understand of the disconnect between the individuals who are addressing the health gap issues in our nation and the relationship to the failure to truly address health inequities, or any inequity for that matter. It is not a criticism of any particular individual or group, but a statement of fact which is becoming more and more of a reality and health inequities continue to exist, almost two decades after it become a priority in the goals of “Healthy People 2000.” Five years ago, after launching a successfully educational program, I decided to write an op ed piece on elementary education and its relationship to the lack of diversity in the health arena, especially in terms of research. As you can see, it attracted very little attention. At that time, I did not have access to my own column, so I posted it on Facebook. Today, I have that access. Why do I bring this issue up again? Well the issue the issue has not going away. Five year ago, I could have easily said it was someone else’s problem and walked away. I could probably do the same now. But it reminds me of the story once told by Benjamin Franklin in regarding to slavery and its lingering impact on America Society, the rotten apple at the bottom of the barrel that no one removes, while continuing to place fresh apples and wondering why the new apples continue spoil. More than a decade ago I was setting up a high school pipeline program, like so many have done then and since. One that was related to attracting underrepresented students into the sciences, especially in terms of addressing health inequities. I was already to start recruiting when I was confronted with an issues, you know, the lack of a large pool of applicants, especially African American and Hispanic males, sounds familiar. I could have easily begin to complain about the issues and turn my attention to mining a depleted Dr. Lovell A. Jones field. What we seem to continue to do in some way today; majority institutions recruited from HBCUs and others for faculty, while not increasing the pool significantly. I could have buried my head in the sand and talk about how difficult it was finding underrepresented applicants, about the lack of sufficient numbers and so on. Or I could put more effort in recruiting what was there while addressing the problem and not walking away. Well, by now, you know I did both. Doing such truly took me out of my comfort zone. I immediately found out that I needed to start earlier than high school, earlier that middle school, and may be earlier than kindergarten. Starting at Kindergarten, I was not equipped to go earlier, meant that any possible improvements probably would not show up for years. It meant implementing a an educational program I had no background. To develop such a program meant taking time away from writing that next paper or that next grant or something to advance my career. You know, it is the publish or perish world. But, fortunately for me, I had a secret weapon on my staff, someone who had developed a science curriculum for elementary and middle schools, especially working with the underserved. It just meant convincing Anissa to return to a field she joined my research group to get away from. But, as I said to her and my education core, it was the reason in the first place, we started the pipeline program, to increase the pool. For as my mentor once said, “your greatest contribution to science is the people you leave behind.” The importance of this again goes that the concept that who you are and your experiences determine the solutions you bring to the problem. What also reinforce my rewriting this piece was an article that appear on Facebook at the same time the memory came up. It was about the granddaughter of a good friend, Vicky Pink. Vicky’s granddaughter has sickle cell anemia. As I wrote in the comment section of her Facebook post, unfortunately, sickle cell is thought of as a Black disease, when in reality it’s not. I believe that because of this perception, we have not provided sufficient funding nor had the real presence of those who need to be at the table to provide the input and/or the advances needed to cure this disease. Just thank about this, we are still using the same treatment discovered decades ago to treat one of the first genetically described diseases. Something to ponder!!! Easy Ways to Eat More Fruits and Veggies Courtesy of Family Features

H

ave you been following your parents’ age-old advice to “eat your fruits and vegetables”? If adding more produce to your daily diet seems like a daunting task, rest assured that one solution is right in your pantry: canned foods. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate nutrition guidelines, half of your plate should consist of fruits and vegetables. Because cans seal in foods’ nutrition, freshness and flavor, they are one of the best ways to get more produce picked at its peak to your table. Plus, canned produce is on par nutritionally with fresh and frozen counterparts, and in some cases even better. Additionally, the canned foods in your pantry – or “Cantry” – can be an excellent source of recipe inspiration. In a recent study, 73 percent of moms agreed that canned foods help them get healthful homemade meals on the table more often. Unlock the goodness of canned fruits and vegetables to prepare delicious dishes like Pineapple Jerk Chicken, featuring nutritious canned pineapple and protein-packed black beans, and Gazpacho with Crab, made with canned crab and lycopene-rich diced tomatoes. Music Icon Prince Dead at 57

By Ashley Fantz and Lisa Respers France CNN

Prince Rogers Nelson

P

rince Rogers Nelson, the eclectic virtuoso who penned such gems as “Kiss,” and “Let’s Go Crazy” and who took on the music industry in his fight for creative freedom, died Thursday at age 57. “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning,” publicist Yvette NoelSchure said. Earlier Thursday, police said they were investigating a death at the Paisley Park studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. They responded to a medical call and found the singer unresponsive in an elevator, Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson said. A massive outpouring of grief followed on social media. Some are saying the icon’s death “is what it sounds like when doves cry,” a reference to his monster hit from 1984. Fans rushed to record stores to pick up vinyl and other Prince memorabilia. Kaleena Zanders went to Amoeba Music in Los Angeles to buy a vinyl edition of Prince’s iconic album “Purple Rain” on Thursday. She cried in the car as she drove there. “Prince means the future, because he’s changed music, everyone in music, he’s influenced every person, and I believe that he represents our future, and it kind of died with him in a

way.” Just this month, Prince made news, but it wasn’t for his music. He said he wasn’t feeling well, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and canceled a concert at the Fox Theater in the Georgia city. Some days later, he took the stage in Atlanta to perform an 80-minute set, unusually short for him. The stage was engulfed in lavender smoke. It was just Prince at his piano. He played his classic songs but kept the mood light and fun -- at one point showing off his skills with a version of the Peanuts theme song. After the performance, the singer’s plane made an emergency landing, Noel-Schure told CNN. Prince reportedly was rushed to a hospital in Moline, Illinois. At the time, the publicist said, “He is fine and at home.” The singer ’s fame never waned through the decades, but he was considered synonymous with the 1980s. His fame reached a fever pitch with the 1984 film “Purple Rain,” about an aspiring musician, his troubled home life and a budding romance. He was a prolific musician. Between 1985 and 1992 he released eight albums, one per year, including the soundtrack for Tim Burton’s “Batman.” He starred in two more movies during that era: “Under the Cherry Moon” and “Graffiti Bridge.” He also put out a

concert film. “Sign ‘o’ the Times” hit theaters in 1987. He infamously changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol in the 1990s during a dispute with his record label, Warner Bros. He started to become known then as the “Artist Formerly Known as Prince.” In 2000 when the singer’s publishing contract with the company expired, he reclaimed the name Prince. Prince won seven Grammy Awards and earned 30 nominations. Five of his singles topped the charts and 14 other songs hit the Top 10. He won an Oscar for best original song score for “Purple Rain.” The singer’s predilection for lavishly kinky story-songs earned him the nickname “His Royal Badness.” He was also known as the “Purple One” because of his colorful fashions. His sound was as unique and transfixing as he was. He created what became known as the Minneapolis sound, which was a funky blend of pop, synth and new wave. Controversy followed the singer and that, in part, made his fans adore him more. “Darling Nikki,” a song that details a one-night stand, prompted the formation of the Parents Music Resource Center. Led by Tipper Gore, the group encouraged record companies to place advisory labels on albums with explicit lyrics. Prince left his imprint on so many aspects of popular culture -- from movies to sports to politics. As the Minnesota Vikings prepped to take on the New Orleans Saints in the 2010 NFC championship game, Prince wrote a fight song, “Purple and Gold,” to inspire his home team. The Vikings lost. He was the halftime performer at the Super Bowl in 2007. Last year, while addressing the unrest in Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody, Prince released the song “Baltimore.” He performed at a benefit concert in the city and gave a portion of the proceeds to youth groups there. Mathieu Bitton, a Grammynominated art director who had known and worked with Prince since 1988, was reeling Thursday. “I’m completely devastated,” Bitton said. “Just watching Prince perform completely changed my life, and his music always just changed everything. He’s, for me, the greatest performer of all time.” Bitton said he was a teenager when his dad sneaked him into a

nightclub in Paris to watch Prince play. He got to talk with the singer, too. “I was obsessed with his music,” Bitton said. “I collected his records. And a lot of projects I ended up pursuing were thanks to that collection. I’m in so much shock, to tell you the truth.” Prince’s former stylist, Michaela Angela Davis, spoke with CNN’s Brooke Baldwin. “The most prolific thing to me about Prince was not only was he the most vibrant example of black genius that I have ever seen, but he was able to negotiate God and sex in his subject matter in a way that we had never seen before,” Davis said. “Every song was either a prayer or foreplay.” Prince became a Jehovah’s Witness in 2001. “He was a prophet. He was a pimp. He was purple. He was Midwest. He was magical. He was funny. He was so black. He walked through this world like he believed he was free, like a free artist, a free man,” Davis said. “You know, he put slave on his face to challenge the entire music industry at a time when they were getting everybody’s everything.” Prince would pop into shows all the time and invite the community, she said. On Saturday, he played for a

Prince Rogers Nelson

small gathering of fans at Paisley Park. He played as brilliantly for 75 people as he did for 75,000. “He said, ‘You know, Michaela, you think in words.’... He’s like, ‘I hear music,’ “ she said. “Sometimes you could be at lunch with him, and he would get up and leave, because there was a melody so urgent, a music so real, that he would just go to the studio and put it down.” CNN’s Catherine E. Shoichet, AnneClaire Stapleton, Joe Sutton and Lisa Rose contributed to this report.

M

any of the one billion burgers sold by McDonald’s have been that of the Big Mac. Now the burger giant is toying with two new sizes of the Big Mac called the Grand Mac and the Mac Jr. in Dallas and Ohio before deciding to take the sizes nationwide. The Grand Mac has two one-sixth pound beef patties and will sell for $4.89 and the Mac. Jr. has a single layer and will sell for a little over $2. Why the change? McDonald’s is trying to increase sales. The company said sales have decline in recent years with more competition and varying tastes of the public.

Visa Moves to Speed Up Chip Card Transactions CNN

V

isa is moving to fix one of the bigger complaints about its new chip-embedded credit cards: It takes too long to pay with them. The credit card company said it is upgrading software, which will allow consumers to insert and remove the card in two seconds or less, rather than to keep the card inserted in the card reader until the transaction is complete. Having to leave the card in the reader while the entire transaction was processed also increases the risk that the card would be left behind by a consumer who is used to being able to put the card away immediately. Visa said the new process, which it dubs Quick Chip, should “make the checkout experience comparable to the ease and speed of magnetic stripe transactions.”

The governor of North Carolina signed such a bill in late March. Many major corporations are fighting against the “bathroom laws,” saying they discriminate against both employees and customers.

The European Commission said Google was abusing its market position by imposing restrictions on Android device manufacturers and mobile network operators. When licensing Android, Google requires smartphone makers to load 11 core Google apps onto the phone before a customer buys it. Europe says Google has illegally abused its market dominance. The European Commission believes “Google’s behavior denies consumers a wider choice of mobile apps and services and stands in the way of innovation by other players, in breach of EU antitrust rules.”
