ow it is Baltimore. There Freddie Gray, a black man, was stopped on the street, pinned to the ground, dragged to the back of a police wagon and died in the hospital from injuries he received in police custody. Six officers were suspended. The mayor promised justice. But the city erupted in nonviolent demonstrations that turned ugly, despite the Gray family’s pleas for peace. Over three dozen were arrested. “Oh, Baltimore,” sang Nina Simone in 1978, “Ain’t it hard just to live.” Baltimore is a tale of two cities. The Inner Harbor now glimmers with new restaurants, new condominiums, the stadiums that house the Ravens and the Orioles. West Baltimore, in contrast, is marked by boarded up stores, abandoned homes and too many people with no hope. The jobs are gone, the schools crowded, the streets harsh. Here the police -- many of whom live in the

elebrating the City of Houston as one of America’s most diverse big cities, A grateful Houston City Council Member Dr. Jack Christie told a crowd gathered in Houston’s midtown Tuesday (April 28th) that our city is not in a turmoil situation as Baltimore due to the diligence of city council. Noting that every member makes it there priority to respect its ethnic neighborhoods and all citizens. “We have a diverse city where one out of five people here were not born in the United State. We have not faced the faults that sparked Baltimore’s fires this past week or last year in Ferguson. Our diverse city council consists of 11 council members that primarily look to their specific districts and five at large council members that look to represent all of Houston. From different races and regions, political parties and personal stories, we respect each other without tearing each other down,” said the At Large Pos. 5 Council Member Christie, who after losing in 2009 became the first city wide challenger to beat an incumbent in 22 years when he defeated Jolanda Jones in 2011. Christie’s made Houston his home after completing his education and gaining valuable experience while serving in the United States Army. He continued to serve his community in

Police Brutality Cries for Change of Culture, Character, Circumstance suburbs -- are tasked with waging a war on drugs and enforcing order. The inevitable result is a tinderbox, a spark away from bursting into flame. One incident of police misbehavior from eruption. We’ve been here before; Baltimore is not unique. We’ve seen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York. Now that demonstrations have put the question of police violence on the front pages, each week brings another horror, another victim, another injustice. Much focus has been put on cameras as a technical fix, but we need a change of culture, of character, of circumstance. Police need new training and a new relationship with the communities they patrol. But at the end of the day, police are not the answer. They are the occupying force, but they are not the cause of the underlying distress. We’ve been here before too. In 1968, after race riots had erupted in Watts, Chicago, Detroit and Newark, Lyndon Johnson convened the Kerner Commission to investigate the causes of the riots. The Kerner Report described a nation “moving toward two societies, one black, one white, separate and unequal.” It called for better training for the police, but also for new jobs, new housing and an end to de facto segre-

gation. Police misbehavior was often the match that sparked the eruption, but there would be no solution without fundamental change. Baltimore and America have changed, but for too many in our ghettos and barrios, the reality is the same. The New York Times has reported on 1.5 million “missing black men,” one of every six aged 24 to 54 who have disappeared from civic life. They are either dead or locked away. Jobs have dried up as manufacturing plants closed and where shipped abroad. Mass incarceration -- with African-Americans still suffering from racial profiling and injustice -- destroys possibility. The official black unemployment rate is twice that of whites, but that does not even count those who want a job but have given up trying to find one. The stigmatization of African-Americans continues. African-American children are more likely than whites to be suspended for the same misbehavior. African-American men are more likely to be stopped, more likely to be arrested if stopped, more likely to convicted if arrested. The result hurts African-Americans generally. The Harvard sociologist Devah Pager has found that a white with a criminal record has a better chance getting hired than black

with no record whatsoever. Being black in America today is just about the same as having a felony conviction in terms of one’s chances of finding a job,” she concludes. We need a serious plan for urban redevelopment. We need a plan to put people to work, a public works project that hires and trains and employs people in work that needs to be done. We could provide guarantees to pension funds to invest in rebuilding the boarded up homes. We could train young people to retrofit buildings with solar and energy efficient insulation and windows. We could insure that transportation exists to take workers to where the jobs are. Baltimore has put us on notice once more. Our cities are at a breaking point. There are more horrors to come, more explosions to follow. Fifty years after the Kerner Report, we ignore its teachings at our peril. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

his wife to raise their three children. “I’ve disagreed with Mayor Annise Parker on primary issues where I believe she has been wrong but we’ve traveled together to 13 countries on trips targeted to bring more diversity to our economy and improve quality of life throughout all Houston. She and I despite different political and

personal philosophies get along. There is an effort from this mayor and the entire council for us to get along for the good of the city,” he said. Despite having been asked by more than 300 people and spurred by a Texas Monthly piece, he is not running for mayor this year but did have polls presented to him that said he could become the first Republican Houston Mayor ever. “I just want a mayor motivated to work with all of us to balance our city budget without spending money we do not have and with an eye to the international incentives that with us working together can continue to grow our city in areas that benefit all,” Christie said. Referencing the ever growing ballot to fill the position of City of Houston Mayor, Christie commented, “What truly is important is that whoever is elected as our mayor in such a diverse city can stay away from looking at color and ideology but to the city as a whole.” Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW Warriors on Horseback: The Inside Story of By

hirty seconds. That’s all it took. You barely had time to yell, but that didn’t matter. The ponies racing on the ground below the stands probably couldn’t hear you anyhow, or see you jump for joy. They were too focused on the small humans perched on their shoulders, and on tearing up the dirt. And if the thought of that makes your heart pound like hooves on a racetrack, then read “Warriors on Horseback” by John Carter. The first thing you might notice as Willie Snaith opens the door to his home is that he’s “a little ‘un.” His just-under-five-foot frame, however, is what gave Snaith his fame: he was once a jump-racing jockey in Great Britain. “Originally,” says John Carter, “the term jockey meant horse dealer or owner…” back when wealthy owners raced their own steeds. In the 18th century, those owners “began to delegate riding responsibilities to minions” who tended to be small, so the horses carried less weight. Early jockeys wore servants’ garb but in the late 1700s, the wearing of silks and colors became the norm. Because gambling has always followed the sport of racing, winning jockeys could become rich and famous but life wasn’t easy for them. One of America’s “tragic hero[es] of the time” was African American Isaac Murphy, whose father was a Union Army soldier in the Civil War. Murphy had a special method of getting his mounts across the line first and by the 1880s, that made him “the highest-paid athlete in the USA” with winnings of near $20,000 a year. Alcohol and weight problems plagued him and he died at age 34 of pneumonia; Murphy is buried next to Man

o’War at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. But booze isn’t the only thing that can do a jockey in. Many jockeys have suffered broken bones and concussions. Since they need to weigh in before every race, “Most feel they have no choice but to almost starve themselves.” Some become bulimic or suffer from depression. All, as Carter indicates, ignore the danger they undertake in the saddle but even that, eventually, seeps into their minds… For the average North American reader, “Warriors on Horseback” is going to be a big challenge to read – not for what it says, but for what it doesn’t say. Author John Carter includes many facets of horse jockeying here: what it’s like to be a valet, what you’d find in the jockey’s locker room, the dangers of riding an animal that’s easily twelve times your size, and why anyone would do it. There’s a nice overview of the history of jockeying… in Great Britain. And there’s the shortfall: readers will find very little about American or Canadian jockeys or races and almost nothing about the contributions of African Americans or Latino jockeys. That omission hurts this book. Readers should beware that this isn’t bad, but it’s not for the casual race-goer. If you’re an owner or a jockey, however, “Warriors on Horseback” might be a winner for you – but only by a nose. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

T

he Texas House of Representatives voted unanimously to pass HB 2717, a bill that would deregulate natural Isis Brantley hair braiding. Currently, braiders must comply with a variety of barber and cosmetology regulations such as attending barbering or cosmetology schools, completing a government-approved 35-hour hair braiding course and obtaining a state license. HB 2717 was authored by Representative Craig Goldman and the bill will now head to the Texas Senate where Senator Royce West has authored similar legislation. The effort to deregulate natural hair braiders follows a successful constitutional challenge by the Institute for Justice and Isis Brantley to Texas’ law that forced braiders to build a fully-equipped barber college before the state allowed them to teach students to braid hair for a living. The Institute filed suit in 2013 and a federal court struck down the law in January. For more information, visit www.ij.org/TXBraiding.

Gospel Icon Dottie Peoples & Top Houston Soloists in Mother’s Day Weekend Production of National Stage Play CROWNS at TSU– May 8-9, 2015

exas Southern University has tapped one of the greatest voices in gospel music today to star in its annual presentation of the national stage play Crowns. Crowns is coming to Texas Southern University’s Sawyer Auditorium Mother’s Day Weekend, Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. Lots of pre-show activities are scheduled for those who arrive early at 6 p.m. These tickets won’t last long and there are

three levels. Those wanting to be up close and personal and attend the post reception with Peoples, $55. Encore Theatre and musically directed by Keith Eason of the Fort Bend Church, the talented cast is made up of some of Houston’s finest actors and singers. The characters use the hats to tell stories and share wisdom about everything from the etiquette of hats to their historical and contemporary social functioning. There is a hat for every occasion, from flirting to church-going to funerals to baptisms. The conclusion finds the standoffish young woman, whose cultural identity as a young black Brooklyn woman has been so at odds with the more traditional and older Southern blacks, embracing hats and their cultural significance as a part of her own fiercely independent identity becomes the story line. Cast members include, Gwen Harris, Gerra Gistand, Zedri Whaley, Takisha Bendy, Liz Rachelle, Terrence Bolton, LaTonya Earl, and Manson Bracy Johnson, III. Chaveria Williams-Rivers and Jasmine Carter have been assigned the stage manager and assistant stage manager responsibilities. Ticket buyers can have their photos taken that day and receive their photos to same day…so come dressed to impress and shop our wonderful vendors. The Gray Line Between Protect and Serve

White, Feature Writer

T

he medical examiner said his injuries were consistent with someone that had been in a major car accident. Eighty percent of his spine was severed, his voice box was crushed and he sustained other injuries that would have left him at the very least crippled for life if not dead. I’ve had to write several of these articles in the past couple years. Articles about black boys and men gunned down, beat down or choked by police. I usually start with the same narrative, “Not all police officers are bad, most of them are good. Don’t lump them all together.” Then I’ll write some more and go to my second narrative, “Violence is not the answer, don’t feed into the image they already have of black men.” As I sit here and write this article I’ve realized I was wrong. How can I write in good conscience that not all police officers are bad when the truth is if you’re protecting an officer that’s beating innocent people and abusing his power than you’re just as guilty. Aren’t police constantly telling society that, “We need your help to capture criminals, to be witnesses when crimes happen. Without the help of the public we can’t put dangerous criminals away?” Why isn’t it the same

when someone is wearing a badge? I refuse to write that “Not all police officers are bad” anymore until the ones that are doing the right thing step up and call out the ones that are terrorizing black men. According to police Freddie Gray wasn’t actually arrested for anything. According to police he didn’t resist arrest and they never laid a hand on him. So him not having on a seatbelt is what caused the damage to his body that usually comes when someone is hit by an 18-wheeler head on? We’re supposed to believe this the same way we were supposed to believe a black kid with his hands handcuffed behind his back could shoot himself in the head. When Ohio State won the National Championship in football they rioted in Columbus, Ohio. Burning couches, torching cars, causing millions in damage and it was just kids being kids. When Kentucky lost in the Final Four in basketball they rioted and caused millions in damage and it was just kids being kids. Well guess what, the rioting in Baltimore, in Ferguson, in Cleveland isn’t kids being kids; it’s frustration and anger boiling to the surface. I understand the need for peaceful protest and I would never stand on a car and scream for civil unrest but how can I judge these

www.StyleMagazine.com

people whose anger has reached a point of no return? In the past I’ve written articles saying how can black men and women be so outraged about an officer killing a black man when we kill each other every day? I can admit today that I was wrong. It’s okay to hold police officers to higher standards, it’s okay to despise black on black crime on Monday and despise incidents like what happened with Freddie Gray on a Tuesday. I am done pretending like all we have to do is sing hymns and wait for the justice system that has failed us all our lives. We tell young black men to do the right things, to respect authority and walk a straight line. How can we ask them to do this when they’re one stop away from being gunned down? A lot of these kids and men have enough to worry about with thugs and predators in their neighborhood; now they have to worry about the men and women that are sworn to protect them also? A pantry stocked with canned foods is all you need to ensure mealtime success, any day of the week. “With a well-stocked pantry full of canned ingredients, I know I always have the makings of a nutritious and flavorful meal,” said Kelsey Nixon, host of “Kelsey’s Essentials” on Cooking Channel and Food Network. Bring to life your family’s favorite recipes with pantry staples such as canned chicken, tomatoes, green beans and broth. Alzheimer’s Disease Study Seeks African American Volunteers

HEALTH

M

ore than 5 million Americans are currently suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and scientists expect this number to triple by 2050. Experts say that African Americans are two to three times more likely than white Americans to develop the disease. A groundbreaking study testing whether an investigational drug can prevent or slow the development of Alzheimer’s seeks volunteers – including African Americans – who have just the earliest changes in their brain associated with the disease but don’t yet have any symptoms. The A4 Study (which stands for the Anti-Amyloid in Asymptomatic Alzheimer’s study), funded by the National Institute on Aging, Eli Lilly, and several philanthropic organizations, seeks to delay Alzheimer’s-related brain damage and curb memory loss before any outward signs develop. Healthy people with normal memories can join a clinical trial aiming to prevent memory loss associated with the disease. “It is extremely important that African Americans get involved with this study,” said Reisa Sperling, MD, principal investigator of the A4 Study. “We need to know why African Americans develop Alzheimer’s in such high numbers, and the A4 Study offers new

12

hope that we can give people a way to fight back, give them something they can actively do to protect their own memories.”

April 30 - May 6, 2015

This landmark study takes a new approach to Alzheimer’s research by testing for an elevated level of a protein known as “amyloid” in the brain. Scientists believe that elevated amyloid in the brain may play an important role in the eventual development of memory loss and Alzheimer’s. Researchers say that the goal of the A4 Study is to test whether an investigational drug that targets amyloid plaques can help to slow the progression of memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s. Another major emphasis of the study is to help determine why certain

www.StyleMagazine.com

populations, including African Americans, are more likely to develop this disease. “For too long, medicines have been developed without substantial research on how they work specifically in African Americans,” said Dr. Sperling. “Medications that are used by the entire community must be developed and tested on the entire community and that’s why it is critical to volunteer for this study.” The A4 Study requires 1,000 healthy participants between the ages of 65 and 85 who have normal thinking and memory function to enroll in sites across the United States. Researchers estimate that 10,000 people will need to be screened to find 1,000 individuals who qualify. “I am convinced that we will find a way to end Alzheimer’s disease before our children and grandchildren ever have to face it,” Dr. Sperling said. “But we need everyone to join in this fight.” Potential study volunteers can learn more about the study including how to enroll by visiting the A4 website at A4Study.org, contacting 844-A-4Study (844-247-8839) or by emailing BrainLink@ucsd.edu.

Mamma Mia: The Story of Finding Your True Self

Raegan Boutte, Entertainment Writer

Have you ever wished to find your true self? Or refuse to deal with embarrassing secrets from your past? Momma Mia, the global smash hit musical centers around a young lady, who while in the midst’s of planning a fantasy Greek wedding sets on a mission to find her real father in hopes he can walk her down the aisle. She schemes up a plan to invite all possible fathers, but on the journey of finding her real dad she begins her own path of self-discovery! Mamma Mia is a wonderful story of finding your true self and it connects with all of us who have struggled with our past. Mamma Mia, directed by the accomplished Brit Phyllida Lloyd, features a talented cast of actors and actress. Stands out in the show are main characters: Sydney-born vocalist Georgia Kate Haege (Donna) with unforgettable vocals, Bailey Purvis (Tanya) Baton Rouge native whose perfect, comedic timing and cute, southern drawl stole every scene, and actress Chelsea Williams (Sophia), whose great performance delighted the audiences with much charisma and charm. The production also features an array of young talented actors and

dancers including: the talented Olivia Ashley Reed (Lisa), Tony Tillman (Eddie) and P. Tucker Worley (Pepper). These break out young performers continued to add a sense of wit, fun, and zealous energy throughout the entire production. The costumes designed for the production were very fabulous, and vintage in design and style. Many of the costumes featured were fun, seventies, and disco- inspired creations. I wasn’t to impressed by the very simple set at first, however with a

production as colorful and whimsical as Mamma Mia, I thought the simple set was very clever and Mark Thompsonthe Production Designer staged a perfect production last night. I was highly impressed with this remarkable show on opening night. First night’s performance ended with a well deserved standing ovation, including three enthusiastic encore performances by the cast. You will leave the theatre highly entertained. This was a treat especially for fan’s of the Swedish,

pop band ABBA who rose to fame in the seventies and has managed to sell over 380 million albums worldwide. I witnessed many fans through out the audience who sang and clapped along to many of ABBA’s greatest s hits. If you are indeed a real ABBA Fan, you would be delighted to know that all of the songs featured in Mamma Mia are hit songs from the Swedish Band ABBA. Musical hit classic songs you may recognize include: “Dancing Queen” “Knowing Me”, Knowing You”, “Lay All Your Love On Me”, “S.O.S.” “Super Trouper”, “Money, Money, Money”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Thank You for the Music”, “Voulez Vous”, and of course the title track “Mamma Mia”. Mamma Mia is currently on tour and it is playing now at the Hobby Center here in Houston until April 19th. I would suggest getting your tickets now, especially if you’re a fan of 70’s pop music and Dance. This is a recommendation for the entire family including the kids! You wont be disappointed! Loretta Lynch Makes History

NATIONAL By Athena

Jones, CNN

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch

L

oretta Lynch was sworn in as the new U.S. attorney general on Monday, replacing Eric Holder. Lynch, the country’s first African-American woman to serve in the role, had her nomination held up more than five months over politicking in the Senate. “Ladies and gentlemen, it’s about time,” said Vice President Joe Biden at the swearing in ceremony. The highly politicized five-month battle to choose Obama’s next attorney general came to a close Thursday when the Senate finally voted 56-43 to confirm Lynch. But the delay of her nomination neared record-breaking proportions. Republicans leading the Senate refused to bring her nomination up for a vote until Democrats cut a deal on abortion language in an unrelated bill. That legislation passed Wednesday, setting up Thursday’s vote and ending the latest partisan Washington standoff. Ten Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, joined Democrats. Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz was the only senator not to vote. Obama tapped Lynch to replace Attorney General Eric Holder in November and her nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee in February. Still, she waited longer than the seven most recent U.S. attorneys general combined for a vote on the Senate floor, after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell insisted on first finishing work on an unrelated bill. Loretta Lynch’s father, Lorenzo A. Lynch, was in the Senate gallery watching when the historic vote took place confirming her daughter as the first African American female attorney general. “The good guys won. That’s what has happened in this country all along,” Lorenzo Lynch told reporters. “Even during slavery. Levi Coffin was a

Lynch has some experience with the latter: the Eastern District of New York has tried more terrorism cases since 9/11 than any other office. In announcing her nomination in November, Obama praised Lynch for successfully prosecuting the The Houston Independent School District located in the Hattie Mae terrorists who plotted to bomb White Educational Support Center at 4400 West 18th Street Houston, the Federal Reserve Bank and the New York City subway. I

t has been over five years and counting, but the “2015 Clutch City ballers” have advanced to Round Two of the NBA playoffs after handily defeating their Interstate -35 rival the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in Round One of the 2015 playoffs. This confirms what many have been speculating for some time – that the Rockets could possibly go “Far” into the playoffs. Can “Far” be déjà vu of 20 years from their 1995 championship? Well, only time will tell. Granted it is only Round One -- but history will demonstrate that the Rockets can get hot and stay hot!! Well, I am certain that Leslie Alexander and the crew are hoping for just that, as he seeks his third championship as the team’s owner. The Rockets’ have been led all season by one of the league’s leading Most Valuable Player candidate, James Harden, affectionately known (and sometimes facially duplicated) to many as “The Beard”. Harden leads the team again this year with over 28 points and nearly eight assists per game and is tops throughout the league in scoring. The NBA All-Star guard is also one of the league’s best at finding his way to the free throw line – and then connecting -- to the tune of over 96% from the charity stripe. Defensively, the Red Nation recently welcomed the return from injury in that of Dwight Howard and D-12, as he is referred to by many, has made his presence known. Howard leads the team with nearly 14 boards, to go along with over 16 points per game and a NASA space ship full of blocked shots. Which by the way, is where the balls go when Howard fiercely swats them off the court... It is no secret that Howard’s injury affected the team, but the Rockets have found a way to persevere and earn the second seed in the Western Conference. Other injury setbacks to Patrick Beverley, Terrance Jones, Donatas Motiejunas, let’s just officially tag him with “D-Mo”, have really disrupted the ebb and flow of the team’s chemistry and progress to the top, but they are getting it done. Fortunately Jones has also returned to playing in a big way and can prove valuable down the stretch to the title. Also, with key and consistent contributions from Josh Smith, Corey Brewer, veteran and past NBA champion Jason “The Jet” Terry, rookie center Clint Capela, as well as a key return of forward Trevor Ariza and a few others, this crew can propel the Rockets to go Far into the playoffs. Round Two gets underway for the Red Nation Rocket crew in early May with the team playing host to either the defending champion San Antonio Spurs or the Los Angeles Clippers. Only time will tell if hoisting the coveted hardware in June is in the cards, but it’s safe to say that the city of Houston and all of its fans cannot wait to make that serious push and close out the team’s 20-year championship celebration season with the fashionable ring number three. 19 Historically Black Land-Grant Universities Commemorate 125th Anniversary of 1890 Morrill Act

1

890 land-grant universities celebrated “1890 Day” by hosting a Wellness Walk to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the universities’ establishment as land-grant institutions by The Second Morrill Act. Funds raised from the walks will support the inaugural Justin Morrill Scholarship Fund for students majoring in food, agricultural, and environmental sciences at the 19 land-grant institutions known informally as the “1890s.” The Wellness Walks are designed to focus attention on such health conditions as diabetes and hypertension that disproportionately affect the minority communities that 1890 land grants are serving through their education, research and outreach systems.
