he trade debate is reaching a fever pitch, as Congress moves toward a vote on whether to pass fast track trade authority that will grease the skids for the 12-nation Trans Pacific Partnership deal and other trade deals. The debate features the most unlikely bedfellows. President Obama is going all out for fast track, lining up with the Republican congressional leadership and the Chamber of Commerce and business lobby that have obstructed virtually all of his agenda. The opposition is led by the vast majority of Democrats in the Congress, virtually the entire activist base of the Democratic Party and the entirety of the labor movement, all of whom have stood with the president in the trenches.

inority women and other minorities made a major difference in election results from San Antonio to Sugar Land, Pearland and Pasadena, Alief and other areas this past Saturday, May 9th in deciding barn burner mayor, city council and school board races. San Antonio will make history on Saturday June 13th, regardless of whether voters ultimately pick Leticia Van de Putte or Ivy Taylor to be mayor. Alamo City has never before elected either a Latina or a black mayor. Taylor, a former city council member, was appointed last summer for the remainder of Mayor Julián Castro’s term after Castro became President Barack Obama’s Secretary for the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department. Van de Putte is a former State Rep. and State Sen. that lost statewide for Lt. Governor last fall but did well across most of the City of San Antonio. Wasting no time restarting campaigns the two that are both celebrated mothers spent their Mother’s Day Sunday attending church and Mother’s Day events racing to the June 13th run-off. “Conventional wisdom said we would not be here but this election is about turning a page, it’s about San Antonio not wanting politics as usual,” Taylor said. “We’re going to hit the ground running Mother’s Day included,

Fast Track Trade Authority is the Wrong Way for America With Republicans in charge of the Congress and the business lobby writing checks, the president has the most powerful coalition and the least convincing argument. His argument in favor of fast track and TPP runs up against history, reality and equity. The history of our trade accords since NAFTA and the WTO is one of unprecedented trade deficits. Companies have shipped good jobs abroad. Countries have rigged their currencies to capture our markets. Incomes have stagnated and working people have paid the price. Every president promises that this time is different, that this deal will expand exports and create jobs. In fact, each deal does expand exports, but each expands imports even more and costs far more jobs than they create. Worse, they drive down wages here in order compete with oppressed wages aboard. There is no longer any question that the way we have run our trade and tax policies has contributed to declining wages and increasing insecurity here at home. The reality that fast track proponents must face is that the current
system of trade is out of whack. Capital has been globalized, but human rights and worker rights have not. The result is an uneven playing field in which more and more of the rewards of growth go to those at the top, and less and less goes to workers here at home. The president, like all presidents before him, says this time is different. But the reality is that this deal was negotiated with corporate interests at the table and the American people locked out of the room. The U.S. government has pushed hard to give the drug companies special protections (raising drug prices abroad). Special licensing requirements shield doctors and lawyers from competition with lower wage professionals from abroad. Foreign corporations get their own private legal system to pressure government. Workers and environmentalists get nice words, but no right of action. President Obama, if he had his way, would create an economy that could work for working people. He’d raise the minimum wage, increase the ability of workers to organize, provide extensive retraining and benefits for
workers displaced by trade or technology, capture the lead in the green industrial revolution and much more. But the very allies who stand with him on fast track oppose every measure that might make fast track and TPP work for working people. The president argues the case for a level playing field, but his allies -- the Republican majorities in Congress, the business lobby -- keep the field slanted against working people. Today, America is plagued by extreme inequality. The country known as the land of opportunity offers its citizens less opportunity than other developed nations. The American dream has become a fantasy. Our global policies aren’t the only reason for this, but they are one contributor to it. The cycle of drugs-in-jobs-out must end. We need to go another way. Fast track sends us the wrong way. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Diverse Women Made Major Difference in May Elections

because we can’t rest on our laurels.” Van de Putte said her supporters, the volunteers who worked her campaign every day, moved her. “I am going to ask them for help for another four weeks so we can get to Election Day with a victory,” Van de Putte said. Van de Putte and Taylor emerged Saturday from a crowded field of 14 candidates that included two male politicians as their most prominent foes for political spotlight including former Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson and former state Rep. Mike Villarreal. Villarreal ran nearly a year, gave up his rep. seat and spent nearly $200,000 of his own funds on his failed bid. Van de Putte earned the most votes — 25,982, or 30.43 percent —

while Taylor trailed by 1,737. Taylor garnered 24,245 votes, or 28.4 percent. Villarreal finished in third with 26 percent of the overall vote while Adkisson picked up almost 10 percent. In Fort Bend ISD Addie Heyliger, a realtor and Center Point projects manager, fought at polls every day of early voting and won a seat as the only minority female and only African American FBISD School Board trustee. This is a significant win for the district as an issue was growing increasing concern about how a district that is now 26.92 percent black, 26.81 percent Hispanic, 23.46 percent Asian and 19.02 percent white could be represented by a board made up of six white and one Indian American trustees. However, Heyliger won a race with four candi-

dates. She beat incumbent Jenny Bailey. In Pearland former Harris County Assistant DA Derrick Reed won 37.05 percent of the vote to Quentin Wiltz’ 30.80 percent and will now face Wiltz in a Saturday, June 13th run-off hoping to become the diverse city’s first African American elected official. In Missouri City Yolanda Ford won her first re-election to serve in her diverse city as its only female council member. She was opposed by the white businessman Bobby Marshall she beat when he was an incumbent two years ago with 72 percent victory. In Alief ISD Dedre Jefferson, an African American schoolteacher leaving teaching to go to law school, won the seat held recently by her mother Ella Jefferson. In Stafford MSD Xavier Herrera, who lost last year for school board, came back this year to win more votes than anyone but the city’s Mayor that has been mayor since 1967. Herrera beat incumbent board President Etienne Zak who despite having been on the board 17 years lost this election by three votes. In Pasadena Ornaldo Ybarro held tight to his city council seat despite GOP Pct. Chair Keith Nielsen’s efforts win it from him. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW Child, Please
I By
by Ylonda Gault Caviness
Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
t was enough to make any kid fearful for his life. It was That Look your Mama gave you – the one you got when you were acting up, the one that made you want to join the Witness Protection Program. That Look could freeze a kid on the spot forever like a statue and, though it was deadly, it rarely came with sound – except, says Ylonda Gault Caviness, a heavy sigh and “Child, Please.” Growing up, there were many things you learned by observation – one of them being a sharp knowledge of when you were approaching your mother’s last nerve. Like most kids, Ylonda Gault Caviness tried to avoid that mess; instead, she craved her Mama’s approval, though it wasn’t earned easily. And that was the way things just were. Until Caviness had her first child. Chloe was born on a hot August day, and Mama was enormously pleased, though she’d never admit it. In the first days, she was helpful and indulgent with the new baby but, never one to filter what she said, she was constantly critical and eagerly pounced on that which she perceived was wrong. That grated on Caviness. Still, mere weeks into new-Mommyhood, Caviness was shocked when Mama announced that she was going home. Caviness felt abandoned. There were grounds for that, Caviness reasoned. Mama had never had much of a mother herself: when she was just four years old, her mother died and her father quickly gave her a stepmother who was almost straight out of a bad fairy tale. Consequently, Mama didn’t put her own children in the center of her life. She gave them the love they needed, but not that which they wanted. Some months later, Caviness had her second daughter, Trinity, an easy baby who made motherhood
particularly good for Caviness and made Mama quite amused at the way children are raised today. Bemusement, however, didn’t change her forwardness: to Caviness’ chagrin, Mama remained frustrating. By the time baby Cole came along five years after Trinity, everything – the help-no-help, the unwanted advice, and Caviness’ exhaustion– had all come to a crash. So you say there are times when you consider asking your mother for a DNA test? And though you love your kids, you might include them, too? Before you grab the swabs, read “Child, Please.” The first thing you need to know is that author Ylonda Gault Caviness is funny. I mean, LOL funny, in a way that will make you feel like she’s been your friend since junior high. You can practically picture the conversations you’d have with her. But this book isn’t all comedy: Caviness dispenses advice and sass, yes, but she also displays a sweet amount of gratitude, understanding, and the kind of love only shared between mothers and the daughters they drive crazy. I think this is a perfect book for everyone who’s ever had a Mom or been one. It’s also great for any Mother-to-Be. If you love laugh-out-loud, cry-alittle memoirs, then “Child, Please” is worth a Look. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

executive producer of Harvey’s daytime talk show among other things and is a very good friend of Harvey dating back to the ‘80s. Gagne’s husband is also a good friend of McDonald. Eventually all lines crossed and Gagne became friends with Harvey and McDonald. Their natural relationship gradually became a working relationship that allowed her to work with Harvey on several projects before her current position. This is not Gagne’s first time in the spotlight of the Emmys. She has a regional Emmy for her work with KHOU-TV and two daytime Emmys. Gagne said winning this second Emmy has been very humbling and exciting. She added, “This piece of hardware is not easy to come by.” Gagne is immensely proud of the work she has done with the Steve Harvey Show and is proud of the show itself and those associated with its success. It brings her great joy to allow people to escape from their everyday world for an hour to laugh and have a great time. Gagne has twenty plus years of experience in the entertainment industry. Many of those years were spent working at Houston’s KHOU-TV. The Jack Yates High School graduate earned a bachelor of communications degree from the University of St. Thomas. She splits her time between Chicago, IL for work and Houston, TX with her family. Her husband, Emilian White, and the couple’s three children share a home in the Houston area. r. Rhea Brown Lawson, Director of the Houston Public Library, was recently elected by members of the Public Library Association (PLA) to their Board Rhea Brown Lawson as Director-at-Large. Dr. Lawson stated, “I am honored to have been elected to the PLA Board, and to be given the opportunity to help move forward the exciting future of public libraries. I strongly believe that we are currently experiencing the most dynamic and momentous period in

HISD Continues to Probe Problems Within District
Y
ates’ asterisk removal program has bee under scrutiny. Concerns are being raised after it was learned that students could do manual labor as way a to make up lost class time, a practice that HISD does not recommend. However, the practice is not against any of HISD’s guidelines. Officials confirmed that the physical labor is not to change grades. The HISD Board of Education trustees learned more about the program earlier this week. HISD is also tackling issues surrounding the changing of students’ grades at several of its schools. Teachers who taught and formerly taught at Westbury and Reagan High Schools have admitted to being asked to change grades and more are coming forward. HISD’s Internal Audit office continues to investigate the issues as new claims arise. For more information, visit www.houstonisd.org.

Take the Guess Work Out of Summer Travel
M
ay is almost over. The close of the school year is a few days away. That means summer is just around the corner. It is time for a little TLC with lots of rest and relaxation. The best way to do that is to escape the routine of everyday life and dive into a summer getaway. So pack your bags, schedule your time off, and plan your summer escape. Mapping out the details of your vacation can be a bit much. Use our tips on everything from working with a travel professional to the best times to travel. Working with a Travel Agent
Planning a vacation for just you is simple enough. Add in the rest of your family or an even larger group and this could be a monumental task when trying to get the best deals and secure travel, lodging and activities. Save yourself the stress and a lot of time by working with a travel agent. Before enlisting the help of a travel agent there are some things you need to do so your appointment can go smoothly. First, have an idea of where you want to go. The world is huge so kind of pinpoint where your destination should be so the agent has a point of reference for their research. Cheryl Taylor of Top Trips and Tours says she asks her clients what’s on their bucket list to start to get this answer. Also have in mind your ideal budget for obvious reasons of course. Know what kind of environment that you want. Are you interested in family friendly spots? Do you want to have some fun in the sun? Are you looking for a partying type of place? These are just a few helpful questions to ask yourself and those you are traveling with to narrow down your choices. Last tip on working with an agent that Taylor clued me in on versus working on your own is that sometimes hotels and resorts will offer specials just for travel pros to encourage them to send their clients to their places. Another bonus that is beneficial to those with tight budgets is taking advantage of a payment plan. Hotels and airlines don’t offer this service but some travel agents do, including Taylor. This is great since when planning trips on your own you have to pay everything all at once to snag a deal. With an agent you get the deal and can pay over time. “A travel agent is just best to take all the guess work out of traveling, “ said Taylor. Where to Go Narrowing down where to go can be one of the hardest things to do. Our world is huge and there are so many places to discover. Start by looking at who is going on the trip. If it is your spouse and the kids, Taylor says some of tops spots for families are Hawaii and visiting Disney Land and Disney World. I found a few more interesting spots on travelchannel. com that give families a bit of adventure too. If staying in Hawaii, as Taylor suggests, a good place to go is the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Parents can be kid free when signing kids to go to Camp Menehune. It is a day and night camp where kids can feed koi and swans, hunt for treasure and explore Tropical gardens. The entire family can get some interactive fun with dolphins at the Dolphin Quest retreat. Another spot that may not be on your list is Mexico. Don’t believe all that you hear about Mexico Taylor says as it often gets a bad wrap. A hot spot for families that is right off the west coast of Mexico is Club Med Ixtapa. They have tons of clubs that are divided by age groups for kids starting as young as 4

months old. Adults will enjoy all sorts of activities including kayaking, archery, water polo and more. They also offer a sunset cruise and fishing in the village of Zihuatenejo for families. One of the most interesting places I found was the Out ‘n’ About Treesort. Guests climb stairs, ladders and even a 90-foot suspension bridge according to travelchannel.com. A swinging bridge separates the child and adult rooms and there is a fire pole and rope swings for ground access. On the site activities include treehouse building, horseback riding, rafting, ropes courses, and more. For adult only vacations you can’t go wrong with Vegas baby. And let me add Miami. These places never sleep. One can party till they literally drop. Go a little farther away by checking out the Dominican Republic according to Taylor. Places like this and Mexico have a lot of all-inclusive deals. Inclusive deals are great since everything is included and paid for before getting to your destination. So all you need to do is enjoy! Don’t rule out cruising the seas for your vacation. This is a great option for families or single adults, especially here in Houston since you can set sail from Galveston and the Port of Houston. Cruises allow you to travel to more than one destination and experience an amazing time on board a ship. The Best Time to Book Travel If you don’t enlist the help of a travel agent you must know when the best time is to book travel arrangements. One rule of thumb people go by is to book as early as possible. USAToday.com suggests a few other tips. One is to book mid-week. Everyone is off on the weekends and thus that makes those days highly popular travel days; the more popular the more expensive. Book flights for the middle of the week like Tuesday or Wednesday for a better deal. Also

book your flight at an off peak time. High peak times include evenings when most people are off from work and that all important window of noon for the lunch breaks. Make travel plans early in the morning. When it comes to hotels now is best to secure them. Now meaning as soon as you know your travel plans since their prices don’t fluctuate as much as airlines. Use sites like Priceline.com and Hotwire.com to get the best deals. Set up alerts on your phone. There are sites where you can input your travel arrangements and they will alert you when prices drop. Staycations are a Viable Option Traveling abroad is fun but don’t forget about the treasures in your backyard. Here is Texas alone there are tons of places to discover. Plano is one of the best places for a girlfriends’ getaway with their many shops and great eateries. San Antonio is a gem for families with sites like the Alamo, Sea World, and more. Couples will love the romantic atmosphere of walking down the tranquil Riverwalk on a starry night. Fredericksburg is another attractive spot for their many wineries and historic German charm. And least not forget about the adventures that wait in Houston. One can spend a day alone in the museum district. No matter where you go in my opinion it is always the folks that go with that make the trip. The goal of a vacation is to relax and have fun. Houston Style Magazine just wants you to make the most of any vacation you take. These are just a few helpful tips to start you on your way. Have a wonderful vacay this summer Style Fam. arco Bicego, Italian jewelry designer, presented his latest collections of oneof-a-kind pieces at Zadok Master Jewelers. Known for his multi-colored gemstone and gold design work, he showcased many items with raw-cut, precious and semi-precious emeralds. Marco describes the collection as “versatile, timeless, and stylish.” Much of the inspiration behind his work comes from the distinct nature of organic and irregular shapes that help to create beautiful and priceless jewelry. Marco says that the modern woman that has an appreciation for

Italian craftsmanship and luxury would be drawn to his work. Bicego, whose jewelry line has been in the United States for 13 years, says that despite his family origin, he didn’t know his life’s path would lead to the designing of jewelry. “Honestly, I didn’t think my future was to be a jewelry designer. I grew up in a jewelry family business. My father established a company in 1958 in Italy... I discovered years later, and now I’m here. I’m really enjoying everyday more and more,” he said with a smile of satisfaction. What may not be surprising to some is that there is a reflection of Marco and who he is in everything he does. He, his wife and three children have a rather “easy and high-quality lifestyle” that ultimately is reflected in his jewelry. In spite of the challenges to create more sensational pieces, Marco still manages to stay true to himself. He revealed to Houston Style Magazine “Every year is a challenge to create something new, to maintain the recognizable DNA of the brand... Right now, everything comes naturally, and I hope in the future that will remain the same. Every single woman can give me inspiration, which is why the consumer is very important in this process.” Every piece Marco produces is hand engraved, 18-karat yellow gold.

“I have my own way to create jewelry, and I have my own style. I always say that you can like, or you cannot like, but it’s really different and unique.” He is also very popular for making long-layered, silky jewelry that feels good to the touch. Finding the Fitness Theory
Gold of JadeGoldFitness
t’s Monday morning 6:30am and you are naked about to get dressed for another day at the office. You are looking in your closet struggling to find the right outfit because none of them are fitting right anymore. It dawns on you another month has come and gone and you notice every inch, every pound, every resolution you made to loose weight at the first of the year has gone to wayside. Your “waist-side” to be exact and now your feeling defeated, maybe frustrated and even downright depressed. The summer is just around the corner and your thinking of every outfit you can’t wear. There’s still a small glimmer of a nagging thought in the back of your mind that says, “I have to do something, but I’m just not into working out and I hate myself for not doing better.” You have summarized that the best THEORY you can come up with is loosing weight is just too much work and it takes too much time. Right? WRONG! That couldn’t be further from the truth and I’m excited to share a NEW theory in the fitness game that is sure to bring a more “juicy” concept to your fitness frustration. OrangeTheory that is! Personally, I know exactly what it feels like to go through the mental battles of weight loss and even just downright disliking the process of daily cardio and weight lifting. So I decided to squeeze out a little more motivation and try OrangeTheory myself to see what all the hype was about. I had the opportunity to sit down with the friendly staff at the newest location in Town & Country one morning and they put me through a 1-hour session so I could experience the theory on my own. Here’s what the owner Jim Potesta had to say about this amazing fitness concept. Jade: What is the concept behind OrangeTheory?
14
Jim: Yes we do all of the above! We offer packages in 10, 20, 30 or unlimited membership. What we suggest is that people come in and try our concept out for FREE and take a 1-hour session to see why we are different than just joining another gym. Jade: How do you see OrangeTheory being different from any other gym workout?
Jim: This concept originated out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL by a gentleman named Dave Long who is the C.E.O of the company. It started with a simple concepts of Pilates and spin classes and then developed into a concept that is now a 1-hour total body workout paired with technology that give our clients the best possible results. We have 210 studios nationally, 250 licenses sold and this is a franchise. This month is our 5-year anniversary for us and we are in 6 different countries and there are 5 locations currently open in Houston. Jade: Who would benefit from OrangeTheory workouts? Jim: Our demographics range from 25-42 but we see over 50 as well. 70% are women and about 30% are men Jade: Do you offer 1-time class sessions, memberships or packages?
May 14 - May 20, 2015
www.StyleMagazine.com
Jim: We cover every fitness level from the novice to the professional athlete and everything in between. You are able to work at your own pace and yet guided in a group session with a one-to-one feel from a personal trainer working along side with you. Big box gyms only retrain less than 10% gym usage in most cases, but our concept retains 92% usage and these mean stronger results with our clients meeting their fitness goals. Most people love the small groups and the fact our staff always knows each member by name and not just another number showing up. One of the goals our sales team is responsible for is to look at our members one by one and calling each member, one by one once a month to get you booked in a class.
