he Flint water crisis is now two years old -- and the water still isn’t safe to drink, cook with, or bathe or wash in. There have been civil and criminal investigations, two congressional hearings and extensive reporting, particularly during the presidential primary in Michigan. Gov. Rick Snyder appointed a special task force. Yet only 33 pipes -- 3 of every thousand -- have been replaced. The Obama administration’s limited declaration of emergency was extended for four more months in April, but the administration made it clear no further extensions will be granted. State emergency resources will end at the same time. Residents still depend on bottled water and filters, and they won’t be supplied beyond August. Now residents are not only suffering from the lead poisoning but from depression and anxiety driven by an agony that it seems will never end.
POLITICAL
M By Burt
Don’t Abandon Flint; Fix It Melissa Mays, one of the mothers who forced the exposure of the poisoned water, appeared on my radio show last week. She is sick and tired of being sick and tired. At a demonstration protesting the two-year anniversary of the crisis, she said, “Flint wasn’t a community that was ‘worth going out on a limb for.’ “So, our job is to prove them wrong. Our job is to show them we are not going sit down and take this anymore. And you know what, I have been peaceful. I have tried to fight this in the courts, in the labs doing all the things to prove that the water was poisoned. We got that proof. The water is poisoned. And two years later, it is getting worse. “I watched my 13-year-old son damn near pass out today from blood tests looking for bacteria and immune disorders. He’s 13. So, I am reaching my breaking point. I’m tired of being peaceful. I’m tired of being nice. They’re not listening.” The city has gone back on water drawn from Lake Huron, as opposed to the toxic Flint River. But in mid-April, Professor Marc Edwards and the Flint Water Study team at Virginia Tech, the courageous team that helped expose the poisoning, reported that new testing shows Flint’s water remains unsafe to drink. The Flint crisis has led to the exposure of leaded water and aged pipes in other communities in America. But it
is clear that Flint paid the price of being poor and largely black. The governor’s own task force concluded: “Flint residents, who are majority Black or African American and among the most impoverished of any metropolitan area in the United States, did not enjoy the same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards as that provided to other communities. Moreover, by virtue of their being subject to emergency management, Flint residents were not provided equal access to, and meaningful involvement in, the government decision-making process.” Now the Michigan Civil Rights Commission is holding its first hearings on the role that discrimination played in the crisis. Some indictments have come down, but the problem isn’t being solved. Gov. Snyder couldn’t find funds in the state to replace the lead pipes exposed by the toxic water. Yet he’s allocated $1.2 million of state funds to pay private attorneys for his criminal defense fund. The residents want action. They need an emergency program to replace the lead pipes. They want an end to the state appointed emergency manager system. It was an unelected emergency manager, with no accountability to the residents of the city, who made the decision to use the toxic Flint River water. And they want Medicare coverage for all those impacted by the
poisoning. The latter is not unprecedented. Residents of Libby, Mont., benefitted from a special provision put into law by Sen. Max Baucus that provides full Medicare coverage for every person who was exposed to asbestos poisoning from the mine owned by W.R. Grace & Co. that left hundreds dead and many more sick. The same should be done for the victimized residents of Flint. This country continues to squander billions on failed “nation building” efforts on the other side of the world. We wasted over $2 trillion on the debacle in Iraq that has helped destabilize the greater Middle East. As Flint has revealed, we will face spreading calamities from obsolete water systems, dangerous bridges, crumbling roads, dated and insufficient mass transit. It is time we stop pretending we can police the world and start rebuilding our country here at home. You can write to the Rev. Mayor Sylvester Turner Shines Delivering First State of the City
Levine, Political Writer
a y o r S y l v e s t e r Tu r n e r challenged a sold out crowd of more than 1,500 at the Hilton Americas Houston on this past Tuesday to join him “to build a city of opportunity that excels beyond our wildest expectations.” April 18th marked Mayor Turner’s first 100 days in office as Houston’s second African American Mayor. The was the original date that the native Houstonian was scheduled to deliver his first State of the City Address where he would have zeroed in on the complexities of financial reform and his progress in public works. But true to its name, “Bayou City,” unprecedented fast rains that morning cased bayous to overflow flooding 2,000 homes and 10,000 cars, killing at least eight and pushing the Greater Houston Partnership’s lunch presentation to be rescheduled. “Two and a half weeks ago, I planned to start this speech with an emphasis on the financial footing of our city but the rains and floods of April 18 had a dramatic impact on our plans for that day and on everyone’s life in our region. Hundreds of people needed to be rescued and put into hastily opened
4
shelters and thousands of homes flooded for a second, third or fourth time,” said Turner, who earned applause from Tuesday’s lunch audience for his rapid response to Houston’s flood crisis across America where national news highlighted him taking charge. “Property owners across our area have become weary of flooding in the Bayou City, impatient with elected officials who offer explanations with no practical solutions, some have and others are close to packing up and leaving our city unless we convince them we’re going to do more than what they currently see,” said Turner, who put the spotlight on former at-large Council Member Stephen Costello. Mayor Turner has named his former mayoral opponent and licensed civil engineer as the Chief Resilience Officer, or Flood Czar in a major move designed to “produce tangible results and instill confidence among residents. In this new role, Flood Czar Costello, who has worked nationally on drainage projects, have sole responsibility to develop and implement strategies to improve drainage and reduce the risk of flooding while reporting directly to Mayor Turner.

Answering calls throughout the year-long campaign by his opponents then that of voters wanting him to “fix the streets, balance the budget and catch the crooks” Mayor Turner brought up to the stage a line of public works employees and led an extended applause for them and what it is they are doing to honor his pledge that potholes would be fixed following being reported by the next business day. His words to the business group regarding budgeting were inspirational. “Three thousand potholes have been filled and every department is

ordered to tell me where 5-7 percent cuts in their budgets can be met. Hundreds of new police officers are being hired as other positions are being frozen. There are certain realities that cannot be ignored: increasing costs to the City simply cannot be sustained. Hundreds of employees could be laid off and our credit rating could be damaged. But this is a course we need not travel. My mom said, ‘Tomorrow will be better than today,’ and as mayor of this City, I still believe what she said.” Turner made it his life’s mission from when he sold encyclopedias door-to-door as a child to someday help his home city from its helm to reach better horizons. He ran for county commissioner, served nearly 30 years as a legislator at the highest levels and ran for mayor three times over three different decades in tough trying campaigns but never gave up in elections and political hurdles to do right for the city he loves and always wanted to lead. BOOK REVIEW
Brown is the New White
our vote matters. At least that’s what they tell you, but you have your doubts. You’re ONE of millions of people who’ll go to the polls in November. You’re a raindrop in the sea, a needle in a voting haystack. But as you’ll see in “Brown is the New White” by Steve Phillips, you are more powerful than you think. In 1968, the year Martin Luther King was assassinated, about 12 percent of the U.S. population comprised “people of color.” Forty years later, on the night that Barack Obama was elected president, 36 percent of Americans were African American, Latino, Asian American, Arab American, or Native American. While that still doesn’t sound like a very high number, Phillips says that, for a politician looking to win in 2016, those demographics belie an “equation that’s been hiding in plain sight”: add progressive White voters, and “America has a progressive, multiracial majority right now…” That’s good news for Democrats – the party most often favored by progressives and people of color – but it’s not the final word. Drawing a line from Selma to Obama’s election, Phillips says that understanding the interests and histories of each individual group (including progressive Whites) is essential for forward movement, politically. It’s also important to know how those groups vote and the issues they care about, because if the “truth of the lives of the New American Majority” is ignored, “they will ignore you…” Phillips says. Stirring things up, as he points out, are conservatives who actively court “communities of color” and Republicans who’ve shown that they’re trying to embrace new thinking. Smart politicians, Phillips says, will “invest wisely” by speaking directly through media outlets
that are important and relevant to voters in order to keep the New American Majority’s attention and retain their support. Both parties must examine ways to bring “justice” and, therefore, equality to constituents. They need to cultivate “great cultural competence and expertise.” And they’ll have to “educate themselves about the realities of the lives of people of color.” Jam-packed with statistics, numbers, and thoughts that whirl around the pages, ‘Brown is the New White” is interesting, but it’s not a book to finish in a weekend. There’s so much inside here to comprehend, that you may not even finish it this month. Author Steve Phillips pulls together plenty of intriguing ideas, history, and cause-and-effect tales but too many stats, which often muddy his points. He seems to go off-topic, sometimes slightly, but enough to cause me to stop and wonder where this was going. And yet, what he says is compelling and impossible to ignore; to wit, we are on the verge of something that could be exciting, if we only coalesce. To reach that point, there are suggestions here, some of which may be controversial and some of which will require serious work. Still, though this book is definitely on the heavy side, what you’ll eventually learn is meaningful, particularly in this election year. For anyone over 18, “Brown is the New White” could be a book that matters. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Houston Texans Get 5 Out of 5 Style Points in the 2016 NFL Draft

Round 1: Nick Fuller/Wide Receiver [Notre Dame] Nick Fuller is really fast and can run routes though he had more drops than you would like a first round Receiver to have. Though everything else is football perfect. Size, speed, hands. He’s going to have to be coached up by the Texans to learn to catch the ball more fluidly so he can run after the catch because a lot of the windows he had open at Notre Dame won’t be open in the NFL. But with Hopkins being double teamed on almost every play, Fuller will have plenty of options to be matched up one-on-one and to make plays. Don’t expect too much from him early in the season but as he learns and grows “Osweiler to Hopkins for the bomb!” Might be a phrase we hear often. Round 2: Nick Martin/Offensive Guard [Notre Dame] Nick Martin is a plug and play Center that barring injury will start for your team for 10 years. Because he played at Notre Dame, he played in a pro-style offense where he had to learn how to call protections and read defenses. His brother is a superstar offensive lineman in the league so his abilities run in the family. The Texans offensive line was not good last year. It was partially due to development and partially due to injuries. But with Dwayne

he Houston Texans draft started the day recruiting Brock Osweiler and Lamar Miller. So unlike most teams they didn’t go into the draft looking for a QB or having to reach for a running back with the loss of Adrian Foster. They went into the draft looking for one thing and one thing only. Speed! Speed to compliment one of the best young receivers in the game in De’Andre Hopkins and speed to make game changing plays. Something they didn’t have at all last year. Below is a list of the Texans draft picks and my Style Points Grade on each one.

it in the spring and summer and who knows, he could take someone’s spot. Round 5: K.J. Dillon/Safety [W. Virginia]
Brown coming back healthy and now Nick Martin at Center, the Texans have a solid foundation on the front. Round 3: Braxton Miller/Wide Receiver [Ohio State] This pick got me out of my seat because Braxton Miller is not someone the Texans would usually draft. He’s played QB almost his entire life and last year was his first as a Receiver and all though he has much to learn about running routes and getting off the line his talent is undeniable. If you get the ball in his hands there is a chance he’s going to score a touchdown every time. Fast, quick, big and he’s played in big games and was unselfish. There’s almost no chance that he will be a bust because even if he doesn’t step up as a Receiver this coming season he’ll be awesome in the return game with punts and kickoffs. Round 4: Tyler Irvin/Running Back [San Jose St.] Once again, speed. Tyler Irvin is fast and can play all three downs on a football field. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and he can block. Teams are doing so much blitzing now that you need a Running Back who isn’t afraid to get dirty. With the Texans paying Lamar Miller a nice amount of money and Alfred Blue still on the roster Irvin will probably start out on special teams unless he kills
www.StyleMagazine.com
Safety’s are like belts. You don’t really realize just how important they are until your pants start to fall down. The reason Safety’s either go really high or in the 5th round is all about range. Can they cover big Tight Ends and Receivers down the field? K.J. Dillon can hit, he’s old school and he will make players fear coming over the middle but the question with him is, “Can you depend on him to cover and not get beat?” In college he got beat several times but it was balanced out by just how good he was in the box. Since this is a 5th round pick the expectations on him won’t be too high but he will play special teams and if he does play he will show just why many experts called him the best physical safety in the draft. Round 6: D.J. Reader/Nose Tackle [Clemson] Clemson had so much talent on their team last year that it’s easy to say a lot of their guys didn’t play hard every snap. When you’re winning most of your games by 20 you tend to take your foot off the gas. Wilfork will be the starter and Reader will learn at his feet. He is a big, run stuffing tackle that you want to eat up blocks so JJ Watt can get to the ball. This kid has 1st round talent but he doesn’t always play like it and that’s why he fell. If he takes the game serious and realizes the defensive players he has around him; he could be a big piece to an already dominate offense. Overall I give the Texans Draft 5 out of 5 Style Points! They came away with two potential Opening Day Starters, filled positions of need and got more speed in one weekend than they had all of last year.

TRANSFORMING FOR THE FUTURE
Letter to the Community: #3 in a series of updates on progress.
DEAR COMMUNITY: An exciting transformation is underway — one that has already started to elevate HCC to a new standard of excellence and a model for community colleges nationwide. Over the last year, we have streamlined operations to make it easier to work with the college, revolutionized the student experience, and fundamentally reshaped how we work with businesses and industry partners. We have also experienced near record graduation increases. Although this level of change takes time – especially with an institution of this scale – the early results speak volumes and show real promise for our college and community in the years ahead.
•
We have made significant progress in improving our approach to finances throughout the institution. Highlights include:
As part of our Transformation process, we listened to students, community and business leaders, faculty and staff, and we studied best practices. We went to great lengths because of our duty to be responsive to the community and to be fully engaged with each other. The only way we can be Houston’s community college is to include the diversity, the people, and the thought that make our city so vibrant. After all, our students will go out into the same community with these companies and organizations. This lengthy process culminated with the development of our strategic plan for the future.

• • • • • •
Maintained affordability for students, with no general tuition or fee increase since 2011 Funded new scholarship streams for students from the college’s auxiliary revenues Maintained affordability for taxpayers by reducing the Maintenance & Operations tax rate and increased exemption levels for elderly and disabled homeowners Finalized Compensation Study and implemented three-year plan to bring all salaries to midpoint of market rates Provided stable, ongoing funding stream for state-of-the-art equipment in Centers of Excellence Maintained fiscally responsible level of Fund Balance, and increased it Redesigned construction projects, financed by 2013 General Obligation bonds, to ensure affordability and sustainability Increased transparency of financial transactions, posting college’s check register and executive’s monthly credit card statements online Formed ad-hoc Procurement Review Committee of external stakeholders to review and recommend enhancements to procurement practices
We recognize the changes in technology, business and society, and we are constantly adapting to help prepare our students for an ever-changing world. This strategy has enabled us to make significant progress in improving the student experience before, during, and after their time with us — as well as helping them secure higher paying jobs and entrance into the universities they want to attend.

Receiving a $7.5 million pledge from The Robert Garner Firefighter Foundation towards full tuition scholarships to the majority of cadets enrolled in firefighter training Supporting the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics Receiving $4.2 million from the U.S. Dept. of Labor for apprenticeship programs Receiving $64,000 from the Consulate of Mexico to support minority students and an HCC advisor staffing the consulate office, which sees over 1,000 visitors daily Initiating the second phase of Transformation, which includes a more streamlined approach to the organization
At the heart of our strategic plan, known as “Imagine HCC 2019,” are four overarching themes: Student Success, Organizational Stewardship, Performance Excellence, and Innovation. We are excited about what it means to the future of the college as we produce students who are prepared for whatever is next in their lives and careers. We are committed to ensuring quality instructional programs and courses, increasing student retention and persistence rates, servicing high-demand fields through skills training and credentialing programs, and improving the student experience. This is an important time for the college and for our community. We understand the vital role we play in helping the people of our community, young and old, obtain important education and skills and supporting the businesses that drive our economy. We will continue to push the boundaries and dare greatly together — so that we can achieve our vision and take HCC to new heights.
Our new approach is to explore ways to be more innovative and collaborative in order to better serve our students and our community. Highlights of recent innovative approaches include: • •
Providing dual credit to public school students for free — in and out of district Participating in Upstream/Midstream Skills Training & Safety Collaboration

However, Brown had not taken any drugs, just eaten meat from Mexico. Studies have revealed that beef from Mexico and China can cause positive drug tests. Luckily Brown kept his receipts that show he consumed a lot of beef. The NFL subsequently lifted his suspension and issued a warning to all in the NFL family.

Single Mothers: Honoring Those Who Wear Multiple Hats
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
mother is a queen because she ensures that all of her children receive a quality education and show respect to everyone, whether it be the school principal or the school janitor.
B
eing a mother of any kind is an adventure. Mothers stay on their toes because neither day nor situation is the same and surprises are plentiful. Having an active partner to balance out the crazy is beneficial. However, if life’s circumstances has caused the father to be out of the picture and mom is holding down the fort solo that is an entirely different jungle. Single mothers have the added stress of the work/life balance and giving time to their child(ren), fitting it a little “me” time, and sorting out every thing else life hurdles their way. It is a lot to handle. Houston Style Magazine knows the struggles of mothers and though we would love to sprinkle some love and appreciation on all our readers who are mothers (single or not) we can’t. But do know we appreciate, love, and commend all of you. However, we can spotlight a select few who were nominated by our loyal readership. So here’s to mothers who are doing it all! We salute single mothers this Mother’s Day.
Angela Achane
Nominated by her friend, Jennifer Rachal
Maria Rodriguez
Nominated by her friend, Yolanda Pope
she does that no other moms ever do. Jenkins is known to make sacrifices of all types for people but especially when it comes to her son. Whatever it takes for a smile to remain permanent on Geordan’s face, Jenkins is like sign me up. These acts do not go unnoticed by the little eyes of her son. He says that there are not enough words to tell everything that his mom does. From selling shirts to raise money for afterschool sports participation to going without just so he could have, Jenkins mothers with joy and positive energy to ensure that Geordan has a stable environment. Her best tip to making it as a single mom is to do in with a sense of humor because you and your child will always have a good time. Geordan Dunn says, “If there was a Mother of the Year Award I would choose you!”
Mary Yvette Payne
Nominated by her daughter, E’Vonne Gipson Patience is a virtue and for single mother Angela Achane her amount of “uncommon patience” is immeasurable. Achane is the mother of two, a son named Albert and daughter named Ajai. She, of course, works hard to provide for their welfare giving them everything they need and sometimes what they want. Parenting with the mindset to get them ready for the future, Achane allows her children to really tap into who they are as people by allowing them to make their own decisions and using those moments to teach them life lessons. No matter how many lessons she teaches her two bundles of light the most important lesson taught is that of loving Jesus Christ and how to live a spirit filled life. Jennifer Rachal says Achane is simply put “an amazing mother who keeps it all together” for herself and her children.
Tyisha Jenkins
Nominated by her son, Geordan Dunn In the world of eleven-yearold Geordan Dunn, his mother, Tyisha Jenkins is the best mom ever. In fact, he says he can name millions of things

Any path of life that is on a road of dysfunction is headed for a bad ending. Single mother Maria Rodriguez saw this as her journey with her child when things started to go awry in the relationship with her son’s father. In a swift action, Rodriguez removed her child and herself to a more positive environment, which meant she had to be on her own. Just as peace returned to the lives of Rodriguez and her son, the mother/son pair was hit with another bomb. Her four-year-old son was diagnosis with Autism. This was most certainly a blow but Rodriguez knew that her son and she were built strong and could overcome any obstacle. With the proper education for herself, following the doctor’s guidance, and smothering her son with extra love, Rodriguez took action for her boy to get the help he needed. Now baby boy is thriving having learned to count by two and at four knows his alphabets, some words and is quite social. Yolanda Pope says Rodriguez is an inspiration as a mother “to know that any positive action is the right course for their lives and their children.”
Karina Soto
Nominated by her boss, Ivette Colvin Move over Sasha Fierce because Mary Yvette Payne is “Mama Fierce.” The mother of three struggles of being a single mom is one of her greatest strengths. Payne loves with a soft heart and teaches her children to lean not on man of this earth but on God, ruler of the earth, for their understanding. E’Vonne says her mom reared them in the church so they all “willingly” sang in the choir and attended Sunday School. Payne encourages her children to go after their goals and instills in them that “nothing beats a failure but a try.” E’Vonne Gipson says her

from most of her friends. That is because while her friends are juggling books, afterschool activities and puberty, she has the added responsibility of raising her daughter. Soto is a teen mom. While many thought that Soto would drop out of school after becoming pregnant, she had another plan for her life. Now more than ever Soto wants to beat the odds and status quo by not giving up her dreams as an example to her daughter, who is now nine-months old. She admits that the journey of being a teen mom has not been a smooth ride but anything is possible. On target to graduate high school on June 4th, Soto has eyes set on earning both an undergraduate and master degree in nursing. She already received one scholarship and will work while she is in college to achieve her dreams and provide for her daughter. She says, “I have achieved and will continue to do so.” Ivette Colvin says that she has watched Soto deal with the tragedy of losing her mother and becoming mother while still striving to do and be better. She is proud of the fact that Soto is graduating in the top 15% of her class and is humble and led by God. Houston Style Magazine salutes these mothers and mothers everywhere for all that you are to your children, all that you do for them and your community, and making it look easy in high heels. All mothers featured in this article will receive one of the following Mother’s Day gifts: gift card from Macy’s, spa service from Sanctuary Spa, pampering basket from Forever Yours Creations, tickets to The Musicians’ Wives, hair makeover by Hair Rumors Couture, or books from author Christina Lockett. Special thanks to Juliana Echavarria of Macy’s, La’Torria Lemon of Lemon-Light Media, author Christina Lockett and all of our sponsors for these gifts to spoil mothers. Chef CJ Turns Catering into Fine Art By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer
W
hen you live in America’s fourth largest city with restaurants on every corner, it seems that one has endless choices when it comes to dining out, catering, or eating at home. On special occasions one may even have the privilege of hiring someone to manage the appetites of a large group. At CJ’s Masterpiece whose motto is “Excellence is the standard and extraordinary is the only way”; clients and their guests are introduced to an eclectic experience where the food is masterfully created in such a way that it indulges all of the senses. It is stated on their website that “every plate achieves that elusive, cuisine-defining balance of sweet, salty, and sour — even dessert.” Clinton considers himself a Houston native since his family moved here from Crockett, Texas when he was 3 years of age. He is a graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School; shortly thereafter, he attended Texas Southern University as a music student. After realizing that his passions rested more in the culinary arts he transferred to the Culinary Art Institute, where he completed his degree and was working in a restaurant prior to graduation. He learned quickly that in the restaurant business ” it doesn’t matter how much education you have, without the experience you start at the bottom”. CJ’s Masterpiece was launched in 2010 after Jackson was separated from a Head Chef position at Higher Dimension Church. Recently, CJ had the privilege of being the face of Houston’s first Black Restaurant Week. His team showcased their skills in a week of events that featured some of Houston’s Black owned restaurants and catering companies. Moreover, since 2015 Team Masterpiece has been busy, as the business has soared with more requests for weddings out of town, special events in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New Orleans. They have already catered four weddings this year and have 10 more confirmed. Chef Jackson stated that his team owes part of their success to leveraging social media where he takes his fan along the culinary journey on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. From the social media posts his team usually receives several inquiries that lead to confirmed bookings. Jackson is a savvy business owner who takes pride in his work and brand; additionally his passion for his craft spills over in his voice when we spoke. Team Style Magazine will try to keep up with Chef Clinton and his team by following them on social media. On Twitter and Instagram follow: @CjsMaterpiece. Their website is www.cjsmasterpiece.com, check out the menu, the art form, and the pictures of their culinary works of art. Five F.A.S.T. Things You Should Know About Stroke Style News Wire
Y
ou don’t need superpowers to be a hero when it comes to stroke, you just need to pay attention to the risk factors and know the warning signs. Stroke is largely preventable and treatable. The best way to beat a stroke is to never have one – about 80 percent of strokes are preventable. The second best way to beat a stroke is to identify one immediately when it occurs and call 911. For American Stroke Month this May, the American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke initiative, nationally sponsored by Medtronic, offers five things everyone should know to be a Stroke Hero and stop the nation’s No. 5 killer in its tracks.

Anyone Can Have a Stroke (Even Superheroes) Some stroke patients don’t “look the part” and they may not have traditional stroke risk factors like high blood pressure. Stroke is more common in older people, but young adults, teens, children, babies and even the unborn can be victims. High Blood Pressure is Public Enemy # 1 for Stroke About 80 million Americans have high blood pressure, yet about half with the condition do not have it under control. Three out of four people who have a first stroke report blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg, making blood pressure the most important controllable risk factor for stroke. Locally, American Heart Association has a free blood pressure management program called Check. Change. Control. Visit www.heart360.org/houston to take control today. Stroke Targets by Color While stroke is a leading cause of death for all Americans, AfricanAmericans are at an increased risk. Blacks are twice as likely to have a stroke compared to whites, and are more likely to have a stroke at a younger age. Stroke is Largely Treatable Clot-busting drugs and medical devices like stent retrievers have made stroke largely treatable, but most patients need to get to an appropriate hospital to be evaluated and treated within 3 to 4.5 hours of the first symptom. With nearly 2 million brain cells dying every minute during a stroke, there’s no time to phone a friend, take a nap, or wait until Uber stops surging. Calling 911 is the best call for stroke. Friends Usually Save Friends from Stroke You’ve heard the saying “Fast friends”. If you’re having a stroke, that’s exactly who you need nearby. Two out of three times, it’s a bystander making the decision to call 911 or seek treatment on behalf of someone suffering a stroke. To remember the most common stroke warning signs and what action to take, learn F.A.S.T. If you see F-Face drooping, A-Arm weakness or S-Speech difficulty, it’s T-Time to call 911. The American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, launched Together to End Stroke with inaugural sponsor Covidien, now Medtronic, in 2013 to elevate the message that stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable. “Like the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, Medtronic is committed to improving the lives of stroke patients,” said Brett Wall, President, Brain Therapies, Medtronic. “Over the past three years, Together to End Stroke has helped boost stroke warning sign recognition, which leads to more people getting to treatment in time. We are happy to continue our support of this important initiative to raise awareness of stroke.” For more information about stroke and to learn how to be a Stroke Hero for American Stroke Month, visit www.StrokeAssociation. org.

A
decades-long ordeal ruined a Texas man, but his life might start to get better now that the convicted sex offender Marcus Calvillo in Kansas who stole his identity has pleaded guilty to misusing a Social Security number. After years of fighting, Marcus Calvillo almost gave up on trying to clear his name. Then he read an Associated Press story about a case in 2013 in which a Houston teacher’s entire identity was stolen. Calvillo contacted the federal prosecutor in Wichita who was involved in that case, Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Anderson, hoping the official might help him as well. The guilty plea Monday from Fernando Neave-Ceniceros, a 41-yearold convicted child sex offender and Mexican national, will help untangle the impostor’s long criminal history and begin to repair the havoc left behind for Calvillo, the man whose identity he assumed.

After the anti-Trump protests last week, where one of Angelina’s 13-year-old friends was choked and punched, the Latino students had had enough – she and half a dozen of her friends wore Dump Trump T-shirts to school to make their feelings known. But the school was not happy. The students are now allowed to wear the T-shirts. But had they not taken a stance, the girls believe that those who felt threatened or harassed by Trump supporters would have remained silent.
