rlando now will be added to the haunting list -- Newtown, Conn., Virginia Tech, San Bernardino, Calif., Charleston, S.C., Aurora, Colo. and more. USA Today provides a graphic of 310 mass killings since 2006 (with four or more dead), the dots tracking across the nation. Mass killings still shock us. Somehow we’ve grown accustomed to the daily terror -- in Chicago, nearly five times as many people have been shot and killed since the beginning of the year than the 49 that died in Orlando. Orlando was, as President Obama said, “an act of terror and an act of hate.” The grisly toll was also a product of the easy access to guns, particularly guns made for the military at war. The killer called 911 in the midst of his rampage to announce his
After Orlando, We Must Let Light Drive Out Darkness allegiance to the Islamic State, but this came as a surprise to his friends and former wife. His father said that his son was outraged by the sight of gay men kissing on the street, that he didn’t think that religion “had anything to do with it.” An act of terror and an act of hate. The human reaction is to want to strike back. Escalate attacks on the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. Redouble surveillance and crack down on Muslims at home. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, went, characteristically, to the most extreme, calling on the president to resign and Hillary Clinton to withdraw because they didn’t use the words “radical Islam,” as if that were a magical chant that would set everything right. He raised alarms about “thousands” of radical Muslims in the United States, and reiterated his call for banning any Muslim immigration. Hillary Clinton was more tempered, while arguing that we had the capacity to eliminate lone wolf terrorists at home and the Islamic State abroad. Dr. Martin Luther King taught us a different lesson. Faced with the violence and terror unleashed against African-Americans in this country, he called on us to reach out, to love and not to hate. “Darkness,” he wrote, “cannot drive out darkness; only light
can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.” This wisdom should not be forgotten now. We would do better to reach out to Muslims in this nation and respect their religion and their rights, rather than to hunt them, to isolate them or to denigrate them. Muslim organizations across the country have issued statements condemning this act of terror. We should embrace them as part of the American community, engage them in the effort to identify the violent extremists, not treat all Muslims like a threatening stranger. We would do better to reassess our strategy in the Middle East rather than double down on violence. We have displaced the Taliban in Afghanistan and killed Bin Laden; we’ve overthrown Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Moammar Gadhafi in Libya; we’ve decimated alQaida; our allies have carpet bombed Yemen; our drones bomb in seven countries. Yet the terror spreads, the violence spreads, the chaos spreads. More violence generates more terrorists. Redoubling our efforts can wipe out the Islamic State, but it will surely add to the terrorist ranks at the same time. Most mass shootings are not
political; the victims most often are relatives or friends. Most casualties do not come from “radical Islamic terrorists.” More Americans have been killed by homegrown terrorists motivated by racial or anti-government or anti-gay hatreds than have been killed by those motivated by Islamic extremism. Gun control cannot end terror, neither the mass shootings like Orlando nor the daily horror as in Chicago. Omar Mateen, the killer in Orlando, was a security guard, apparently with a record clean enough that he was able to buy guns legally. But surely it is inconceivable that military assault weapons like the AR-15 semiautomatic rifle that he used (and that was also used in Aurora and Newtown and San Bernardino) should be so easily purchased. Reviving the ban on assault weapons that lapsed under President Bush is not a full remedy, but it is simple common sense. You can write to the Rev. El Franco’s Wife Endorses Ellis for Commissioner’s Court
odney Ellis, a Texas State Senator since 1990 and before that a Houston City Council Member, earned the endorsement of Kaye Lee, the widow of late Harris County Pct. 1 Commissioner El Franco Lee last week. Commissioner Lee died last January while still in office. His death occurred after the time a special election could be called and after his name could be removed from the 2016 ballot. The 124 Pct. 1 Democratic Pct. Chairs are scheduled to elect Lee’s successor June 25th. Tuesday, Ellis also announced the pledged endorsement of 65 of the pct. chairs which essentially guarantees him the nomination should they not change their mind before the 25th. “On June 25, 2016, you will determine if we as a party will continue to have a voice and presence on Commissioners Court for years to come. Your vote is much more than electing a replacement for an unopposed term,” Kaye Lee said in the letter referring to Locke having been appointed by Republican Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and Republican Commissioners Jack Mormon, Steve Radack and Jack Cagle to represent the more than 1.2 million people in that is overwhelmingly urban and minority Harris County Pct. 1.
Lee also was referring to her husband having held the powerful post since being elected the first and only African American Harris County Commissioner in 1985. Lee had also been elected to a state representative seat in 1978 before that when he and Emmett first served together. Unlike Houston City Council, there are no term limits for commissioner in Texas. These posts are considered the most powerful Texas posts because also unlike city council, commissioners are autonomous in their precincts for what they want to do and are less dependent on the judge and other commissioners than council members depend on the mayor and other council members. Ellis is excited about the endorsement in that Kayle Lee credits Ellis as a lifelong active, partisan and “ loyal Democrat”, that has a history as a family friend that has won re-election in every election he’s run since first securing a Houston City Council District D seat in 1989. BOOK REVIEW
Running with the Champ
wo heads are better than one. Another body can make work lighter, both in mood and in task. A partner can support you, encourage you, inspire you, and sympathize with you. You solve easier with another mind on the problem. Yes, two heads are better than one, and in the new book “Running with the Champ” by Tim Shanahan (with Chuck Crisafulli), so are four feet. People who knew Muhammad Ali probably wouldn’t be surprised that he met Tim Shanahan in 1970 because of a charity event. Shanahan was working with a Chicago organization, and needed big-name sports heroes to “deliver a motivational speech to the students.” His connections led to Ali, who invited Shanahan into his home and his life. They were friends almost instantly; days later, they became regular running partners. It was a rather informal situation, says Shanahan: they ran when they could, near a park in Chicago. This was after Ali’s three-year boxing suspension, and both knew that the Champ needed encouragement; Shanahan, the better runner, gave it to him. The unlikely friendship began to take deepen: the black Muslim athlete who came from the wrong side of the Louisville tracks and the Catholic white guy born in Wisconsin would lay in the grass after their run, discussing their childhoods, favorite things, dreams, and life in general. Being Ali’s friend was a wild ride through the years. The Champ was often abrupt with his demands, both to Shanahan and to others; he didn’t suffer fools gladly, and expected his wishes to be quickly granted. He was generous, monetarily and time-wise, with nearly everyone he saw, giving away a
good portion of his income (and, supposedly, some of Shanahan’s, too). Ali loved meeting celebrities, hated unsolicited advice, could be stubborn (especially in his career), and had a surprising jealous streak, but he was funny and larger-than-life. Then, around the time Ali retired, things changed: he started uncharacteristically losing his patience with many in his inner circle – including Shanahan. In 1984, a diagnosis of “parkinsonism” explained everything… In many such memoirs based on celebrity, you’ll often find a distracting amount of namedropping and braggadocio. You might even expect that in a memoir about Muhammad Ali, but the surprise is that author Tim Shanahan (with Chuck Crisafulli) doesn’t focus on that alone. Instead, “Running with the Champ” is a loving tribute to a friendship. And yet – as in so many relationships between famous and not-famous, there were the not-so-goodtimes, and Shanahan includes those among his stories. Here, we see a big-hearted athlete in action, and sometimes struggling. We also get a heartbreaking glimpse of Ali and his determination to hang on to the shreds of a career that was done. For fans who’ve read everything they can on Ali’s fights, this is a look from a different angle at the man himself, from a fan-turned-friend who may’ve never really known Ali at all. If you need a book about The Greatest, then, “Running with The Champ” may be one of the better ones. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Houston’s Diversity Puts Many Residents at Higher Risk for Viruses That Can Cause Cancer Style News Wire
H
o u s t o n ’s Hispanic, A f r i c a n American and Asian residents are at higher risk for certain viruses that can cause cancer. The Prevent Cancer Foundation is bringing its Think About the Link™ Campaign to Houston to raise awareness of the connection between these diseases and cancer. Many Houston residents are unaware of or cannot access these cancer-preventing services. To find solutions and provide screenings to the community, the Prevent Cancer Foundation is joining with its Houston partners—Hope Clinic, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, Harris County Public Health, Houston Health Department and MD Anderson Cancer Center. There will be a Summit on Friday, June 17, 2016 with partners, health care leaders, advocates and policy experts to discuss strategies for addressing high rates of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HPV in the city.
Lovell’s Food for Thought – Rebel with a Cause
Dr. Lovell A. Jones, Health Editor
amra Bentsen, the wife of former Congressman Ken Bentsen of Texas, once referred to me a rebel with a cause. In fact, she had thought of holding a gala in my honor based on that theme. Unfortunate, the rebel label got in the way of the cause. However, such has not stopped this “boat rocker” for continuing to blend to some large degree both good science and good, healthy activism successfully. This year will mark the 30th Anniversary of the Biennial Symposium Series on Minorities & Cancer, now Minorities, the Medically Underserved & Health Equity. It will also be the 15th Anniversary of the Health Disparities, Education, Awareness, Research & Training (HDEART) Consortium (www.hdeartconsortium.org), whose roots, and that of the Intercultural Cancer Council (www. interculturalcancercouncil.org) and the Congressional mandate Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH), can trace its linage to. In the picture are Kay Horsche, the first woman chair of the board of the American Cancer Society; LaSalle D. Leffall, MD, the first African American President of the American Cancer Society; Felicia Jeter, former News Anchor for CBS KHOU; Charles A. LeMaistre, MD former President of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; me and Claude D. Organ, first African American chair of a majority surgery department in the United States. It was these individuals who helped launch the first Biennial Symposium on Minorities & Cancer and brought together, for the first time, the leadership of the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute in support of addressing cancer in minority populations. symposium was the spark that led the National Cancer Advisory Board of NCI to create the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer (NBLIC) under the leadership of Dr. Louis Sullivan. In 1989, Dr. Sullivan became the US Department of Health & Human Services and received the LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr. Cancer Prevention & Control Award at the 2nd Biennial Symposium on Minorities, the Underserved & Cancer. Now fast forward to 2002, and the creation of the Health Disparities, Education, Awareness, Research & Training (HDEART) Consortium and the launching of the Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Course and the

workshop in 2003. The creation of HDEART was fifteen year after that fateful meeting in the Americana Hotel in Bethesda, Maryland, that lead to the creation of the Biennial Symposium Series. From the 1st Biennial to the NBLIC, to ICC, to the Congressional mandate CRMH and now to HDEART, the movement first discussed in that small hotel room continues. Today, with the help of member HDEART institutions, the 14th Annual Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Workshop will take place at the University of Houston Downtown and will have a good number of underrepresented students and fellows from across the country; continuing that tradition starting with the 1st Biennial Symposium in 1987. Many of those who attend the 1st Biennial, especially those from Hawaii, are now among the ranks of those addressing health inequities. This year, as in the past, many of those who have attended the workshop, as well as the Biennial, not only attend the workshop, but also bring their students. Although we have a large database with many of the names of the students, one goal now is to identify and trace where they are. Read the full story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

Single Dads: Honoring Men Who Do Double Duty
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
S
tatistics from countless experts have shown that children who have a father or father figure in their life do better in all areas of life than those who grow up with the absence of a father figure. Children with fathers experience fewer behavioral problems and score higher on reading achievement exams according to Fatherhood.org. Fathers are vital in the development of children. Fathers parent differently than moms. Fathers give children their sense of adventure. Dads are generally the first to throw kids high in the air, teach kids a sport or encourage them to try something that mom probably wouldn’t approve of. This helps build a child’s confidence. Fathers are role models for girls of who their future husband will be. And for boys fathers are role models for the man they will become. In honor of Father’s Day Houston Style Magazine is spotlighting two fathers, who have for circumstances unknown, have had to fill the role of both father and mother as they are single dads. We understand the journey has been one that has been filled with some bumps as well as some smooth paths. #TeamStyleMag just wants to show some appreciation to you and encourages you to

My life flashed before my eyes,” said author, poet, philanthropist, rapper and community activist AJ McQueen, whose teenage, neardeath experience changed his life forever. From gang-banging in his native St. Louis to “spittin’ verses,” the Houstonian has become a well-known spoken word artist whose work has caught the attention of BET and President Obama. He was featured on BET’s “106 & Park” as an advocate against teen violence and received a White House achievement award. “Activism for me came from St. Louis,” he said. “I have a passion for speaking up for the people who can’t speak up for themselves to make a change…Now God has shown me that I can express my feelings and speak on things in many different ways.” McQueen is CEO and president of the performing arts company Writer’s Block, Inc. Culinary Father’s Day Gift Giving Guide By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer
D
ads are not always easy to shop for when considering that most men already have a large collection of ties, socks, cologne and toolkits. However, for the dad who enjoys fine beverages, food, and everything culinary, this gift guide offers recommendations that may help narrow down one’s options for selecting the perfect Father’s Day present. First of all, as summer begins a lot of families bring out the grill to celebrate Dad’s special day. If the man of the house is ready for a new outdoor cooking appliance that can do it all, then Fire Disc® Grills which are made in Houston offers a variety of methods for preparing a meal. Based on current product information, “They not only barbeque, they bake, blacken, boil, broil, cook, deep fry, grill, scramble, sauté, sear, steam and can cook up mouth-watering, restaurant-quality delicacies ranging from your typical steak and burgers to gumbo, fajitas and paella. They have also been ruthlessly vetted by professional chefs.” These grills can be customized for the individual purchaser by placing an order on www.firediscgrills. com. Secondly, The Big Green Egg is another alternative for home chefs who are looking for a unique outdoor cooking experience. During the SL Wine and Food Fair, we actually got to watch a live grilling demonstration. This ceramic air-tight griller is designed to evenly distribute the heat throughout the cooking chamber. Furthermore, they are sold all over the town, so picking up one is easy, go to www.biggreenegg.com and find the nearest dealer to your zip code. So the dad in your life enjoys a cocktail before or after dinner; here’re a few suggestions: Mighty Swell Sparkling Cocktails, which are bubbly fruit flavored alcoholic beverages that are light and refreshing. The lemon flavored version is my favorite; it pairs well with any selection of grilled meat and salad. Moreover, they can be purchased at any H-E-B Store. On the opposite side of light and bubbly beverages are the dark and sturdy varieties of Scotch Whiskies, such as: Johnny Walker, Black, Red, Blue, or Gold Labels. Glennfiddich offers a variety of single malt whiskies that have a long-standing history of being a favorite of whiskey drinkers. Other brands such as Crown Royal, TX, and Jack Daniels which can be purchased locally, are welcomed gifts based on the recommendations that I received from some HSM readers. Finally, when it comes to food, one of the best gifts besides a home cooked meal that a dad can enjoy is a gift card to his favorite restaurant. Some of my favorites for brunch, lunch or dinner are: Grotto Restaurant, Saltillo, Jackson Fresh Market Seafood, The Palm, and Ruth Chris. Thanks for reading and continue to follow us on Instagram and Twitter. 12

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States.” On June 19th 1865, the Union soldiers led by General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the American Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. This came two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, but was unsuccessful in Texas due to lack of influence and enforcement of the new Executive Order. Reaction to the news ranged from shocked to joyous and triumphant, with many anxious to leave their ‘masters’ and plantation. Moving north was the logical option and symbolized true freedom for many. Others looking to reunite with family members headed for neighboring states Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. In following years, the day that became known as Juneteenth evolved into a time for reassurance, prayer and gatherings. Former slaves and descendants continued to make an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston in honor of this date of freedom. Traditional Juneteenth activities included playing games, fishing, and barbequing. Many of these traditions are still witnessed today. Education, prayer, and self-improvement were
organizations have arisen over the years with the mission to “promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.” According to Juneteenth.com, “Juneteenth today, celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous selfdevelopment and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a national day of pride is growing. “ For more information on the history of Juneteenth and Al Edwards visit www.juneteenth.com

In 1979, Edwards founded Juneteenth U.S.A, an organization that celebrates Juneteenth. Edwards is also best known as an author and sponsor of House Bill 1016 making June 19th (Juneteenth) a state paid holiday in Texas. He is also Chairman of the Texas Emancipation Juneteenth

What You Should Know About Juneteenth

Buffalo Soldiers 150th Anniversary
Marshall, Special to Style
T
he Buffalo Soldiers National Museum has reason to celebrate. A century and a half ago Black soldiers called Buffalo Soldiers first served in the American military. Beginning Monday, July 25 through Saturday, July 30, the museum will be the site of activities celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Buffalo Soldiers, as part of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Calvary Association Annual Reunion. In addition, the Houston museum has been chosen as national headquarters of the association, the umbrella organization of more than 40 Buffalo Soldiers’ chapters across the country. Founded in 2001 by Captain Paul J. Matthews, an Army Vietnam veteran and African-American military historian, the museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Buffalo Soldiers. The exhibits cover seven wars, along with women in the military, chaplains in the military and astronauts. For more than 35 years, Matthews has collected military artifacts and has the largest collection of African-American military memorabilia in the world. The museum also offers programs and projects that reach out to community members of all ages. Matthews said the upcoming anniversary marks a milestone in American history. “In 1866, the U.S. Army reorganized and established the first peacetime Army,” he said. “As a part of the reorganization they created six Black units. This July 28 will be the 150th anniversary of the formation of those segregated units. We’re very excited about that. We will have our headquarters at the Houston Westchase Marriott and related activities
at the museum.” In a one-on-one interview, Matthews discussed the reunion celebration, the museum and the Buffalo Soldiers, brave African-American men who served in a variety of posts in the 1800s. Defender: What sparked your interest in the Buffalo Soldiers? Matthews: While I was an ROTC cadet at Prairie View A&M University I read two paragraphs in a military book about the Buffalo Soldiers and became intrigued by the Black men in blue uniforms…it was a story that needed to be told. Defender: Why is it important for African-Americans to learn about the Buffalo Soldiers and Blacks in the military? Matthews: I take them back to Frederick Douglass who said at the start of the Civil War, “Give the colored man a uniform, a buckle with the U.S. on it, a button with the eagle on it and a musket and you’ll make him a citizen but you’ll also make him a man.” He wanted to make sure the Civil War was being fought for freedom and not just to save the Union. The same thing occurred in World War I. W.E.B. DuBois said, “Put aside your differences, go overseas, come back and be first-class citizens.” The military has always been a very important component
of the Black community. When I was growing up in La Marque, Texas, and we would go to church, World War II soldiers would come in and people would stand up. In the ‘60s when you graduated from high school it was either the Army or college. That’s the way it was. The military, other than the Vietnam era, was always extremely popular in the Black community. Defender: How would you describe the museum’s success? Matthews: We started out in my garage and later moved to a building over on Southmore. In November of 2012 we moved to a 35,000-foot historic building that goes back to 1925. That’s a tribute to the board of directors and the volunteers and the owners who helped us become who we are. We are the mothership of Buffalo Soldier museums. I don’t know of any other military museum that can compare to us and what we do. Defender: What are some of the activities planned for the celebration? Matthews: One of the highlights will be a parade that’s going to start at Emancipation Park and end up at the museum [located at 3816 Caroline]. We have 150 riders on horses that are going to come in. One group is coming from New Orleans, where the main Calvary was formed. The other group is coming from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where the 10th Calvary was formed. Events include a ceremonial ride-in on that Thursday, a session on the history of the Buffalo Soldiers on Friday and a parade on Saturday. We are expecting over 2,000 people from all over the U.S. The Houston chapter is the host chapter along with the museum and I am the national chair for the reunion. D
oes your dad have the need…the NEED for Speed? Does dear old dad endlessly daydream of getting behind the wheel of his favorite speedster ranging from Lamborghini to Ferrari and more? With Father’s Day quickly approaching, the question left at hand is, “What to get dad for Father’s Day?” Well, ponder no more. Houston Style has the answer that will make this Father’s Day a very memorable one! Spend some time with dad at the MSR Houston Race Track, located in Angleton, Texas, for a day of Exotic Car Racing with Drive Fittipaldi. It will make dad feel like he just did a scene for Days of Thunder (yes, dad can get his Tom Cruise on!) Recently, #TeamStyleMag was invited to participate in a private media day at the MSR Houston Track by Drive Fittipaldi and we knew we were in for a treat. Upon arrival, we checked in with the gracious host and explored the beautiful fleet of the world’s most Reggie drove the Ferrari 430 Scuderia amazing exotic cars. The lineup included the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Nissan GT-R, Porsche 911 Carerra S, Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni, and Lamborghini Superleggera! All vehicles are open to the public. The reason why the Fittipaldi Exotic Driving Experience is unlike anything you can possibly imagine is partly due to the amazing vehicle and credit also goes to the unique track. With its 17 turns, the 2.38-mile, 40-foot wide track, MSR Houston combines a balance of slow, medium and high-speed corners. The track is configured to run both clockwise and counter-clockwise. Safety is the number one concern, and the course features paved runoff areas in all critical braking and exit zones. Race control has views of the entire track, along with a closed-circuit camera system with views of each corner. Perfect for any dad, the experience will include a special question and answer session with professional racecar driver Christian Fittipaldi. The Fittipaldi name may sound familiar as he has competed in various forms of motorsports including Formula One, Champ Car and NASCAR. Currently, he is the reigning double champion of the United SportsCar Championship series and has won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2014 and 2004. He also won the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring in 2015 and numerous other United SportsCar Championship races over the last 2 years with teammate João Barbosa. The best part of the experience is the 8 total laps in one of the exotic cars mentioned above, a RaceCross challenge, driving video, a special event photo plaque, a special event Nike polo, and a special Race Ride with Christian Fittipaldi as the driver! Finally, dad will be put in a fire suit, strapped in with a HANS restraint and sent out with Christian Fittipaldi in the driver’s seat in the Porsche race car! If the first option does not fit your Father’s Day plans, Drive Fittipaldi also offers other packages. During our private media day at MSR Houston, it was a thrill to be behind the wheels of an exotic car, but the real highlight was definitely the Race Ride in the Porsche race car. If interested only in the Race Ride at MSR Houston dad can enjoy it for only $99.00 $69.00!! Let him experience the speed and performance of a Race Car while in the hands of a professional driver for two thrilling laps around the track! Heighten the experience by allowing dad to put on a racing suit, helmet, and Hans device Christian Fittipaldi and hold on! We hope a few of our native Houstonian fathers get a chance to check out this awesome Driving Experience during Father’s Day.
