COMMENTARY

ast month at the graduation ceremony of Tuskegee University, a historically black college, first lady Michelle Obama spoke candidly about the racial barriers facing African-Americans and encouraged them to overcome continuing discrimination by staying “true to the most real, most sincere, most authentic parts of yourselves.” People, she said, “will make assumptions about who they think you are based on their limited notion of the world.” She and her husband have “felt the sting of those daily slights throughout our entire lives.” But “those feelings are not an excuse to just throw up our hands and give up. ... They are not an excuse to lose hope.” Michelle’s comments were deeply moving because they came from her lived experience. Today, two of three Americans have a favorable opinion of her; she is far more popular than her husband. She’s hailed as a fashion icon

POLITICAL

ozens of candidates for Houston Mayor, City Controller and City Council crowded Monday’s Meyerland Democrats monthly meeting despite threats of torrential night storms to tout their positions on controversial gay rights, arts funding, union dues, drainage fees and other important issues. State Rep. Sylvester Turner, promising this race for mayor is his last political run, said he has visited with religious leaders in the Jewish community throughout Meyerland; where residents continue to deal with the aftermath of flooding from Memorial Day weekend. He said he has prayed with rabbis and huddled with homeowners since the flood. “I’ve done more for flood relief and the arts than anyone. I know more is needed. I support HERO and led the charge for union members to continue paying their dues through paycheck deductions. I may not be the best looking mayor you’ve had but I will be your best mayor,” Turner said. Former Kemah Mayor Bill King running for Houston mayor started with his background. He grew up understanding hard work as the son of a pipefitter but believes union members should only voluntarily pay dues by paycheck deduction. He added that Hero would not have been his priority but did

for her stylish mixing of designer with off-the-rack clothes. She’s confident enough even to release a video of her exercise routine featuring kick-boxing and lifting weights. Her campaign for obesity and for healthy living has helped transform school lunches and vending machines across the country. But it wasn’t always this way. She was raised in the South Shore community in Chicago. Her father, a municipal worker, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis as a young man. Her mother and father surrounded their two children with love, with high expectations in hard conditions. This month in Chicago, Michelle gave another commencement address, to graduates of Martin Luther King Jr. Preparatory High School, and spoke to students from experience: “I know the struggles many of you face. How you walk the long way home to avoid the gangs. How you fight to concentrate on your homework when there’s too much noise at home. How you keep it together when your families are having hard times making ends meet.” Michelle flourished in school, and went on to Princeton, where she felt virtually like an alien in a school filled with the children of privilege, where only 8 percent of the student body was African-American. Yet she graduated with honors and went on to earn her law degree at Harvard Law School. After experience in a corporate firm, she turned her energy to more public-spirited work, eventually as a vice president

for external affairs at the University of Chicago Hospital, creating bridges to the surrounding community where she had been raised. But as Barack Obama’s comet rose in 2008, Michelle became the target of harsh criticism. She was burlesqued as “Mrs. Grievance” or “Barack’s bitter half.” The fist bump she gave Barack when he clinched the Democratic nomination was called a “terrorist fist jab.” She was accused of exhibiting a “little bit of uppityism.” As she told the graduating class at Tuskegee, “as potentially the first African-American First Lady, I was also the focus of another set of questions and speculations; conversations sometimes rooted in the fears and misperceptions of others. Was I too loud, or too angry, or too emasculating? Or was I too soft, too much of a mom, not enough of a career woman?” But she made her way. She focused her political energy on fighting obesity, a plague across America, disproportionately afflicting African-Americans and Latinos. She made healthy eating and exercise more popular, while mobilizing public pressure on food and beverage companies to cut the sugar and change the offerings in school lunches and vending machines. Her work on issues military families face, particularly the pressures they feel not only when deployed but after they come home, helped thousands find decent work. Perhaps her biggest triumph was her biggest priority -- raising her

children in the White House. Her mother moved in to provide an anchor. The president came back at 6:30 to eat with this family, attended school events and athletic practices like a regular parent. Their tight and loving family has been an exemplary model for families across the country. And today, the vast majority of Americans have respect and affection for the first lady who made this happen. Michelle Obama has said she has no intention of running for political office when she leaves the White House. But the interest in her running never subsides. If she decides to run, she would be the odds-on favorite, particularly for the Illinois Senate seat now held by Mark Kirk, whose most recent infamy was his attempt to use “street language,” degrading Sen. Lindsey Graham and the South Side of Chicago. As Barack Obama’s presidency heads into its final years, one thing is clear. Michelle Obama’s grace, intelligence and discipline have served her family, her husband and the nation well. You can write to the Rev. Meyerland Democrats Monday Met Houston Mayor Candidates

not cite himself ally or animus. King said before arts can be backed anymore he wants basics paid for. King considers basics as balancing the budget, catching the crooks, and fixing the streets. His biggest issue was that the drainage fee that last week was deemed unconstitutional by Texas’ Supreme Court. “The so called rain tax has led to the largest property tax hike in Houston’s history without making Houston less likely to see floods that have cost us so many lives and homes,” King said. Former Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said he feels for those

that have had to deal with the affects of flooding and asked all to seek higher ground when hearing about potential flooding. He said he grew up valuing arts and remembers as a first generation Mexican American from Lindale Heights taking a bus to see arts museums. “President George Bush ordered me to protect LGBT inmates’ rights. If criminals rights can be protected so should law abiding citizens,” Garcia said. Chris Bell said his home was flooded and he has been hit more by floods than any candidate. He said as a congressman and councilman he has

proven his commitment to equal rights and helping those in need including arts and unions but when asked about his supporting an increase in the sales tax rate to fund pre-kindergarten he said no. “First we must put our house in order and pay our bills. No more tax until then,” he said. Stephen Costello said he supports arts funding, human rights for all and sees infrastructure funding in the way. He thinks the drainage fee is a good choice. He boasted about his journey to Houston with his wife in a car with no air conditioning. And how he built up his company and recently sold it to be committed to being the city’s next mayor. Ben Hall came out punching Costello’s drainage fee history saying its revenue went to salaries and hike and bike trails but not the improvements needed to fix flooding. Hall said he is against funding for the arts or other projects that don’t pay basics first andwas adamant to saying “no” to HERO. Hall considers basics to be improving the city streets, reducing crime and lowering drainage fee. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW Keep the Change

F By

Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

ind a penny, pick it up. Words of advice from your grandfather, for whom a penny was worth bending over. For you, one cent doesn’t buy much, so do you grab errant coins or step past them? What’s the deal with a lousy penny, anyhow? Harley J. Spiller makes it his hobby to know, and in “Keep the Change,â€? he’ll tell you. We humans are a curious bunch. There’s a good chance, for instance, that you have fabric in your wallet, cloth you could exchange for dinner. The fabric itself isn’t worth much – surely not as much as printed numbers inked by sixty tons of force might indicate. No, it’s the value we assign to it that really matters. Dollar bills are made with “world-classâ€? precision and safeguards, each made of 75 percent cotton, 25 percent special linen, measuring 2.61 inches by 6.14 inches by 0.0043 inches thick. “In 2012,â€? says Spiller, “more than eight billion rectangles‌ soaked up close to three thousand tons of ink to create just under three hundred and fifty-nine billion dollars.â€? That ain’t chump change, and the government constantly looks for ways to keep counterfeiters from reproducing the fine details, glow strips, and muted colors of foldable money. Even just scanning a dollar bill into your computer, Spiller notes, can result in a bit of unpleasantness‌ And then there are the bits of metal you have in your pocket or purse. Copper has been prized for eons: some Native Americans considered it sacred. The U.S. Mint begged to differ, though, and didn’t declare copper to be legal tender until 1862 – which meant that the first copper pennies, produced in 1792, couldn’t be deposited in a bank. Still, making cents made sense: pennies were

traded for and used by slaves, and when Abraham Lincoln died, mourners turned “Indianheadâ€? coins into souvenirs. Abe’s portrait on the penny proved to be even more popular: between 1909 and 2012, nearly 500 billion pennies were minted, although many people now jeer at the mere presence of a one-cent coin. Did you know that banks sometimes literally throw money away? Yep, and you’ll learn why (and more!) in “Keep the Change.â€? Since he was a young boy, museum professional and author Harley J. Spiller has been a numismatist (coin collector) with a focus on mangled and altered cash. In this entertaining book, he nicely melds his passion and quirky collection with photos and facts about money as a whole: its history, the reasons why it looks as it does, and a large list of alternates for the word “money.â€? Spiller’s shared knowledge also fills in many cultural gaps to help readers understand money’s role in society, and embracing his glossary of terms will make you sound like the Big Wig of Big Bucks. While you’ll surely learn a thing or two here, the real reason to read this book is to enjoy a lighthearted look at currency, recovered and made. If that seems like great fun to you, then find “Keep the Changeâ€?‌ and pick it up. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Multiple Blessings: Celebrating Fathers of Twins, Triplets, and Quads

e is strong. He is brave. He is a protector and a provider. But with the sound of a cry or a wide eyed smile from his pride and joy a man can turn into a big softy when it comes to his children. He is dad. The man will do any and everything for the love of his family because if they are not happy he is not happy. On this Father’s Day, Houston Style Magazine honors those fathers who have their hands extra full, literally, with two, three, four, and more bundles of joy. They are dads of multiples.

David Gibson with kids

Al Francis with kids

Al Francis Father of Triplets and Twins Nominated by Doris Vela

One could say David Gibson has the best of the world being the father of fraternal twins – one boy and one girl. Ever since the birth of the twins David has been right by their sides. Waking up before the sun rises to feed them breakfast and going down with the sun to read them bedtime stories and tuck them in. Not a day goes by without the twins hearing “Daddy loves you.” He constantly instills in the twins’ heads that they will be amazing and successful. His wife, Dawn, describes David as the perfect model of what every father should be.

After serving our country in the US Army for the past 27 years, Al Francis retired to be a full time dad to raise his triplet girls and twin boys with his wife. The couple also has an older daughter and one grandson. His family describes him as a phenomenal leader and role model. When it comes to the kids, Al does everything from braiding hair to teaching the kids to ride a bike. The kids and Al have a chant. He says “I Love my Life, Who got it better than us? The children reply “NOOOO-Body!”

David Khan with kids

David Khan Father of Twins Nominated by Shannon Khan David Khan went from being a single man with no children to a dad of two just like that when he married his bride in 2012 and became father to her two sons from a previous marriage. A year later the Khans house burned and they lost everything, being a good father and husband David made endless sacrifices to rebuild the family and their home. As joy began to fill their lives once more, his family of four grew to six with the birth of the couple’s twins. His wife, Shannon, is grateful for her husband describing David as a great teammate, leader, provider, protector of his family and awesome father.

Johnny Dukes with wife and kids

Johnny Dukes Father of Triplets Nominated by Antoinette Dukes

Brian Boone, Jr. with kids

Brian Boone Jr. Father of Quads Nominated by Nailah Stephens Some called this dad by his given name of Brian Boone, Jr. while a few others know him as “Quaddaddy.” He is the proud father of 10-month old quads (2 girls and 2 boys) and one active 6-year-old son. His cousin nominated him for the daily inspiration he is to her. Besides being one amazing father, she said she could never do his fatherhood justice with mere words. This young father is God-fearing and pours all of himself into raising his children so they know that they are loved, adored, and appreciated. David Gibson Father of Twins Nominated by Dawn Gibson

10

DeCorey Young with kids

DeCorey Young Father of Twins Nominated by Britney Young Balancing a basketball may have been easier than raising three children but DeCorey Young does not mind it one bit. Once a professional basketball player overseas, he took some time off to help his wife in raising their 2-month-old twin boys and 3-year-old daughter. Now he supports the family by working three jobs. However, he is not just a dad to the three he has at home. He serves as a mentor to an inner city school’s basketball team. In addition, he mentors even more boys at his home church whose fathers are absent from their lives. His wife says DeCorey is an amazing man of God and is a perfect father.

In the eyes of Antoinette Dukes, Johnny Dukes has a heart of gold. Johnny had to do something no father should ever have to do. He had to bury his only daughter. With the lost of that life, Johnny welcomed four new lives into his own life in the form of his wife and triplet sons. Through marriage, Johnny also has two daughters. TUTS First Date Gives Houston Audiences the Ultimate Dating Guide! By

Raegan A. Boutte

S

till single and looking for love while all of your friends are married? Do you cringe because family and friends are fixated on fixing you up? Well then “First Date” is really the play for you! We all know it’s complicated finding true love in today’s world and this goodhumored musical gives audiences some interesting insight on how hard dating truly has become. Musical “First Date” was first performed in 2012, written by Austin Winsberg with music and lyrics by talented duo Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner. It is a hilarious play about the hardships of dating and the issues all single people face. Many of us can relate to all the nerves and jitters we feel - as we put Main characters of First Date our best foot forward, warily sitting thorough countless of bad dates in hopes of finding that one person you connect with. “First Date” is great to watch because it touches on all the confusing dating questions we have such as: what to say, what to wear, how to act, what to talk about and what not to talk about and, of course, who should really pay at the end of the night. The musical is visually clever as the majority of the characters in the show are displayed as fictionalized voices in the main characters heads. There are imaginative and hysterical appearances from former flames, best buddies and nagging parents who bring the story to life while offering there own dating advice and colorful experiences as they coach the main characters through their very first blind date with one another. Main characters Aaron (A.J.) Shively and Casey (Jessica Janes) do a fantastic job as we watch them struggle to even like each other and then pretend to be something that they are not. The real message to audiences in this play is to be who you truly are and to take a chance at love. The score that accompanies the play further illustrate those real first date issues we are all too familiar with, featuring songs with titles such as: “First Impressions”, “(Not) the Girl for You”, “Bailout Song, “The Awkward Pause” and “The Check”. The style of music in the show was a great variety; so expect to see musical numbers from hip-hop to modern rock. There are also several comedic bits and dance numbers that keep the audience laughing throughout the entire night. “First Date” manages to be both entertaining and fully engaging as it features an interactive stage design that fully immerses the audience. The audience gets to see the band play the musical accompaniment onstage as part of the bars entertainment. The set design even allows for audience members to sit on stage as part of the show and it also features a full working bar that you could order cocktails from before the show begins. “First Date” is an attractively, fun filled, musical for both adults single and taken. It is relatable to anyone who has struggled with the confusing rules of dating. TUTS “First Date” is currently playing at the Houston’s Hobby Center through June 21st, so enjoy a night out and check it out, trust me if you have ever had to sit through a blind date - this really will be “the most fun you’ll ever have on a blind date.” For more information about the show, visit www.TUTs.com.

T

he End of Prostate Cancer is keeping families together this Father’s Day with Do It For Dad, a national campaign taking place in the month of June to create awareness and end prostate cancer, which is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men. Do It For Dad aims to unite families across the country in an effort to raise awareness and funds for a disease that will affect one in seven American men in his lifetime. “As we celebrate Father’s Day, we’re faced with the reality that every 19 minutes another American man dies from prostate cancer, ” said ZERO CEO Jamie Bearse. “We created the Do It For Dad campaign so that families could get involved at

14

the local level in saving lives and raising awareness about prostate cancer.” Those who wish to participate in Do It For Dad can invite their family and friends to join them for a walk or run in their local community, host a kids dash, parade around the block, go on a mile hike, or hit a park for a 5K. It’s all up to them to determine when, where, and how far. Once they’ve decided on their activity, they can make it official by going online to order matching Do It For Dad t-shirts! Shirt proceeds and donations help raise awareness, advance research, and provide education about prostate cancer. At ZERO, 98 cents on the dollar goes to programs and activities. On the day of the event, participants should remember to share photos on social media using #DoItForDad; join the conversation to connect with others who share a passion to end prostate cancer. ZERO will award prizes throughout the month. If you can’t host your own event this year but want to participate, you can make a $25 donation to ZERO to help keep families together, and we will mail dad a personalized Father’s Day card letting him know a donation was made in his honor. You can visit the ZERO website to view the card and make a donation: www.zerocancer.org/do-it-for-dad-card.

The History of Junteenth Courtesy of Juneteenth.com

J

uneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free with the issue of General Order Number 3. The order stated, “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.” Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. Today, Juneteenth continues to be highly revered in Texas with many former slaves and descendants making an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston on this date. One of the reasons it is so widely celebrated across Texas is due to the efforts of Al Edwards. He is credited as the Father of Juneteenth. While serving as a state rep, he authored and sponsored a house bill in 1979 making June 19th a state paid holiday in Texas. He also founded Juneteenth, U.S.A., in 1979 along with the Al Edwards Real Estate and Mortgage Company. Visit www.stylemagazine.com for a list of Juneteenth activities in the city.
