Iraq: Common Sense in the Wreckage

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

T

he furious debate about Iraq is largely a debate about blame, not about solutions. The neo-conservatives who sold the invasion of Iraq on the basis of fables about weapons of mass destruction now want to blame Obama for “losing Iraq.” Unrepentant, they have once more flooded the media -Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, even Paul Bremer, who headed the ruinous post-invasion occupation. But General Colin Powell, Bush’s Secretary of State and former Chair of the Joint Chiefs, had it right when he cautioned against the invasion, arguing what was dubbed the Pottery Barn argument that “if you break it, you own it.” The invasion broke up Iraq and shattered stability in the re-

scope of the folly is that all that misery and sacrifice produced a government allied with our adversary in the region and aligned against our allies. On solutions, the debate has been virtually devoid of common sense. Many seem to think that precision, limited bombing will have transformative power, leading to peace, negotiations, coalition government, a revival of the moderates. This is frankly silly. There’s already a lot of violence in this expanding civil war; adding a bit more to it isn’t a remedy. First, we have to understand the limits of our interest. President Obama argues that our interests are deeply engaged -- in stability of the region, in the supply of oil, in the security of our friends from Israel to Jordan, and even in the security of our “homeland,” which could be threatened if the vicious ISIS terrorists consolidate a safe haven stretching from Baghdad to Damascus. But this, too, seems exaggerated. Obviously, we have an interest in stability of the region -- one reason invasion was so foolish. But the civil war isn’t really a threat to our security.

Iraq’s oil is not essential to the world economy, much less to ours. And the terrorist ISIS forces will be constantly besieged, and hardly a threat to the U.S. In reality, the U.S. has neither the interest nor the resources nor the public support to “resolve” the civil war now raging across the Middle East. We should revive the “coalition of the willing” to offer outside pressure for negotiations and peace. We should be willing to bring our regional allies together with our regional adversaries like Iran to see if a settlement is possible. And we should act economically to limit the damage. But the last thing we should do is commit more lives and more treasure to a limited military intervention that will only add fuel to the fire. You can write to the Rev. Blacks Make Big Impact in Primaries Across America

rom Mississippi exactly 50 years to the week when voter registration volunteers were murdered in Freedom Summer to South Carolina’s cradle of the Confederacy, the heart of America’s black culture in Harlem, Maryland’s salty marshes and Oklahoma’s dusty plains, African Americans Tuesday made an amazing impact in primary race political participation. Thad Cochran, 76, was in a Republican run-off when he was expected to lose Tuesday following years of no opposition and a winning streak going back 42 years to 1972. Tea Party backed State Sen. Chris McDaniel bested Cochran in the June 3rd Republican Primary giving him three weeks for a comeback. His unprecedented approach to beat rigidly conservative McDaniel, 41, was to reach out to African American Democrats that did not vote in the initial primary and it worked. Cochran won 50.9 percent or 191,508 votes to McDaniel’s 49.1 or 184,815 votes encouraging African Americans dependent on the dollars he

gion. Obama inherited the shards of broken glass. Cheney and his claque want to blame him for not putting the pieces together again. Obama at least had the good sense to get American soldiers out of the mess (although their removal, ironically, was agreed to by George Bush and enforced not by Obama but by the government of Iraq that refused to accept a so-called “residual force.”) Affixing responsibility for the debacle is important because it helps us decide who to trust going forward. But it doesn’t provide much help in figuring out what to do. The civil war between Shiite and Sunni and Kurd now engulfs Syria and Iraq, with Iran and Saudi Arabia and the emirates involved in supporting various sides. One of the perverse effects of the Bush-Cheney invasion is that it produced a militantly Shiite government in Baghdad, allied with Iran, and intent on suppressing the minority Sunnis in Iraq, to the dismay of our allies in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. The Bush debacle is measured in millions displaced, trillions wasted, hundreds of thousands dead, and thousands of U.S. casualties, dead and wounded. But the

and high school seniors on his likeliness not to cut college student aid. In South Carolina Democrat Tom Thompson earned 60 percent of the vote or 23,383 votes over Sheila Gallagher’s 40 percent or 16,130 votes and made history as the first African American Democratic nominee for education superintendent. Thompson joins African-American candidates in both the state’s Republican and Democratic parties since U.S. Tim Sen. Scott, R-Charleston, is on the GOP ballot. Scott, who was appointed to succeed U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, is vying against African American Richland County Council Member Joyce Dickerson to become the first African-American elected to the US Senate from South Carolina. In New York’s Harlem Charlie Rangel, 84, having been in the US Congress since 1970 won 47.4 percent or 22,674 votes to Dominican American State Senator Adriano Espaillat’s 43.6 percent or 20,846 votes in a rematch from 2012. Rangel promises

this will be his final race. Rangel, in an increasingly less black and more white and Hispanic district, worked harder than ever to get his voters out and despite ethics challenges he prevailed. In Maryland African American Democrat Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown won 51.3 percent or 236,037 votes in his primary to State Attorney General Douglas Gansler’s 24.7 percent or 111,497 votes to put him on track to become his state’s first African American chief executive following this fall’s general election. In Oklahoma State Rep. TW Shannon at 36 was his state’s youngest State House Speaker ever, until he resigned recently to run for an open US Senate seat. Shannon, who is half African American and half Native American Chikasaw , lost his Republican Primary to US House Rep. James Lankford. Lankford won 57.2 percent or 152,658 votes to Shannon’s 34.4 percent of the vote or 91,772 votes.

of the reasons the Bayou City beat out other number one spot holders. Over the past five years, Houston’s manufacturing workforce has increase while cities like Los Angeles have decline by as much as 13%. This makes Houston on the heels of cities like Los Angeles and Chicago to be the country’s largest industrial center. The Austin area was the second city to make the top 10 list coming in at number seven. For more information, visit forbes.com.

ouston will now have a fourth area code. In addition to 713, 281, and 832 Houstonians may add 346 to the mix. Apparently the number combinations for the current three area codes will be exhausted by September of this year. Thus prompting the assignment of a new code. The Public Utility Commission of Texas announced the new area code will be operational on July 1st. Good news is your current phone equipment will not need to be reprogrammed to accommodate the new code. For more information, visit puc.texas.gov.

ENTERTAINMENT 93.7 The Beat Silencing the By Taylor Berry, Editorial Intern

I

Doubters with H-Town Beat Down

t’s no secret that there’s a rivalry between Houston R&B and hip hop radio stations 97.9 The Box and 93.7 The Beat. The station, 93.7 The Beat, hit Houston radio in December 2013 as they replaced 93.7 The Arrow. Since then they have truly been making a name for themselves in becoming a well-known Houston radio station. As they compete for the title of “best R&B and hip hop station”, 93.7 clearly took a huge stride to first place by putting on the city’s first ever H-Town Beat Down concert. On Friday, June 20th, one of the most awaited summer concerts in Houston took place. 93.7 really made this a show to remember. It opened up with some of Houston’s most notable rappers, Paul Wall, Trae tha Truth, Slim Thug, and Zro. These four started the concert off right performing some of the city’s favorite hits and left the crowd wanting more. As the night continued and the stadium continued to fill, there was a lot of energy in the environment and a crowd of roaring fans. Meek Mill performed next opening his set with Dreams and Nightmares and had the crowd going wild. As he continued, he performed a variety of his top singles, but J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar were the concert’s hard hitters. J.Cole murdered his performance and even teased the crowd a little having everyone think that his set was over after only three songs. Then he wowed the crowd by coming back out to finish up with Can’t Get Enough, Power Trip, and of course Crooked Smiles. J.Cole lived up to what the crowd was expecting. Next to take the stage was Kendrick

Lamar who also left a good impression on the crowd. He performed all his hit singles from his Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City album. Kendrick Lamar really shut the stage down with his performance and left many fans screaming on there feet. Trey Songz was scheduled to be on next. His performance somewhat turned into a promotion for his new album which will be coming out July 1st. He frequently reminded the crowd about the album release. He performed a number of songs from Invented Sex, Heart Attack, Say ahh and Bottoms Up, and of course ended up winning the crowd over by performing his last few songs shirtless and throwing his shirt into the crowd. Future closed the show by having the best beats of the whole night. Future hit the stage hard performing hit after hit with Chosen One, Honest, U.O.E.N.O. and many more, but wait there was more. 93.7 The Beat surprised us all by honoring Bun B. with the first ever 360 Legendary Award. After receiving his award, he gave us a surprise performance taking us back with Houston favorites, Big Pimpin, Draped Up and a city favorite Get Throwed. He had the crowd going crazy! 93.7 The Beat brought together several great artists to provide a great concert and bring Houston its first H-Town Beat Down. I would say they have silenced any doubts about their station’s success after hosting such a great concert! Bun B

The Prodigal Son

BOOK REVIEW

M

By Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

om always liked you better. Your siblings probably knew it. How could they not? You were her favorite who got the bigger dessert, more hugs, a lax curfew. Surely that proved it. And surely, they thought the same thing because Moms really aren’t supposed to have favorites. And in the new book “The Prodigal Son” by Kimberla Lawson Roby, neither are Dads. Matthew Black hated to admit it, but he missed his parents. It had been a year since he’d cut ties with them. It had to happen: his father had stood by while his mother did something underhanded to Matt’s wife and baby son. Reverend Curtis and First Lady Charlotte Black never wanted Matt to marry Racquel; they’d made that clear, and their actions almost destroyed her. Though it hurt him to the quick, Matt avoided his parents in order to protect his family, but then Racquel started acting weird. She wanted nothing to do with her son or her husband, she started drinking, acting crazy, and she asked for a divorce. Matt was baffled. He loved Racquel – until things got much, much worse… Curtis Black hoped with all his heart that Matt would come back to the

fold. He loved all his children deeply: Alicia, his oldest daughter. Matt, his strong son. Curtina, his baby girl. And now there was Dillon, a long-lost, newly-embraced son that Curtis had denied so many years ago. Reverend Black felt blessed. Dillon Whitfield was furious! Here he was – the eldest son of the esteemed Reverend Curtis Black – and his own father ignored him! He never told Dillon about his return to the pulpit. He barely included Dillon in family events. Curtis could hardly even make time for his firstborn son and Dillon knew who was behind everything: that witch, Charlotte. Dillon knew she hated him and he planned to ruin her. Nothing would give him more pleasure, but he wasn’t sure exactly how it would happen. His “fiancée,” Melissa, the woman he’d used to scam his father, was pathetic. She was no help. He couldn’t do it on his own. And then he met a wildcat named Racquel… The way I see it, there are two parts to “The Prodigal Son.” The story itself is good enough. Author Kimberla Lawson Roby gives readers a standard amount of women’s-novel drama in a standard church setting; a couple of plotlines

that go off yonder; things that will make you suck the enamel clean off your teeth; and your typical evil antagonists. We also get a cliffhanger, naturally. What bothered me, though – and I know it irritates others, too – are the mistakes in this book. Missing punctuation and oddly worded sentences have nothing to do with the plot, that’s true, and some issues can be ignored – but not when they happen over and over again. Though it can stand alone as a passable diversion, this book is part of a series and, if you’ve read the others, you’ll want “The Prodigal Son.” For most readers, though, I think you can do better.

Football Great Lynn Swan Backs NFL Blackout Rule

Lynn Swann

N

FL Hall of Famer Lynn Swann, the former Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl MVP, traveled to Houston Monday to urge the Federal Communications Commission to keep in place the NFL Blackout Rule that prevents local football games from being broadcast if they are not sold out within 72 hours of the kick-off. “The blackout rule is beneficial because it encourages a full stadium, which helps fire up the home team. I know if the fans fill the stadium the

team is motivated and plays a better game. The city, county and local community benefit from the private and publically owned stadium being full because revenue is generated to keep the stadiums in business and local restaurants and other facilities around the stadiums are fired up from fans and their families celebrating the success of their local teams doing well,” Swan said to the Greenway Plaza area Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. As a 1974 rookie Swan led the NFL with 577 punt return yards, a franchise record and the fourth most in NFL history at the time. He went on to win a championship ring with the Steelers in Super Bowl that year and the following season became the highlight of his career when he caught 49 passes for 781 yards and a league-leading 11 touchdowns. “I want to encourage football live attendance. I know what it has done for Pittsburgh. I know what it has meant for Pennsylvania and means for all of America,” said Swan, who was a nominee for Pennsylvania Governor in 2006 and later ran for Congress from Pennsylvania. In his second season he played for Super Bowl X where he recorded four catches for a Super Bowl record 161 yards and a touchdown in the game, assisting the Steelers to a 21-17 win and becoming the first wide receiver to earn Super Bowl MVP honors. He retired with four Super Bowl Rings having helped the Steelers make it to Super Bowl XIII. In that game, Swann caught seven passes for 124

www.StyleMagazine.com

yards and scored the final touchdown for Pittsburgh in its 35-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The Steelers made it back to the Super Bowl again in the 1979 season, and Swann caught five passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in Pittsburgh’s 31-19 win in Super Bowl XIV. Overall, Swann gained 364 receiving yards and 398 all-purpose yards in his four Super Bowls, which were both Super Bowl records at the time. Swan celebrated a 30-year career in broadcasting but still believes the blackout is crucial because “first and foremost a team should be seen by the fans in the stands.” Swan is traveling the country protesting the changing the sports blackout rule after 38 years. The sports blackout rules were originally adopted nearly 40 years ago when game ticket sales were the main source of revenue for sports leagues. The FCC contends in its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. “Changes in the sports industry in the last four decades have called into question whether the sports blackout rules remain necessary.” “Swan challenges the FCC, “I strongly oppose any change in the rule. We are on pace for a historic low number of blackouts since the policy was implemented 40 years ago. It has truly affected very few games the past decade, the blackout rule is very important in supporting NFL stadiums and the ability of NFL clubs to sell tickets and in keeping our games attractive as television programming with large crowds.”

to bring some things to light about their music in Canton is the Westbury High School band. Since Strahan also attended Westbury, the high school band received an invitation to participate in the grand parade. The over 60-member band needs just over $40,000 to get to Canton. So far HoustonISD has given $15,000 and family and friends have donated $5,000. Each student going on the trip is paying $350 each for transportation, housing, food and other costs. They are saving costs by chartering a bus instead of flying and staying in college campus dorms versus a hotel. Despite numerous fundraisers they are still about $15,000 short. All have faith that they will get the additional funds needed. Houston will be well represented with these two award winning bands. This is something both band directors can agree on. “This is huge for our students. It gives them an experience of a lifetime,” said TSU’s Band Director Richard Lee. “The more experiences you give them, their perspective on life changes,” said Westbury band director Reginald Washington. HEALTH

By Dr. Lovell Jones, Health Editor

s we launch the 12th Annual Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice, I keep wondering what it will take for the workshop to be noticed. I had high hopes that things would be different this time. Why, well several weeks ago, I had an opportunity to meet and discuss the goals and objectives of the workshop with a few member of the media in Houston. I happened to attend a luncheon in which one of my former staff was being honored and was initially places at the media table. Later, when I had an opportunity to mention the workshop, the instant reaction was, “this has been going on in Houston for the last 12 years. Why have we not known about it? We need to get this out there on local Sunday shows, in every possible venue we can.” Yes, I have heard this before, and every year, following the workshop I get the question of “why didn’t we know about this? Well, as they say, if it bleeds it leads. This does not bleed. It does not just tell you how bad things are. It doesn’t give you the latest wiz bang discovery. What it does do is give you solutions to the problem. It has done this for the past 12 years, attracting scholars from all over the country and the world and touching the lives of all 4,000 individuals who have attend the workshop over the years. I continue to say we have the knowledge, we just lack the will to really do something about the problem. We are fascinated by the new discovery, but we lack the will to develop the tools to truly disseminate what we already know works, making it available in an equitable manner to all that need it.

TRAVEL

By Rebecca Briscoe, Feature Writer

The title of The Honorable Louis W. Sullivan’s, Former Secretary of Health & Human Services, presentation at the 12th Annual Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice was “The American Journey to Health Equity. His book chronicles this journey.

This brings about the question of why. A colleague of mine for the Caribbean recent said when I mention this “Because African Americans love America, the way a mixed race child loves his white mother despite her calling him derogatory names, people with your skills and talents stay, hoping that one day, this drunken, besotted woman (THE USA) will love you back. I have no such illusions. At a major university in West Africa(Ghana, Nigeria) or in South Africa, or even working in those areas with the UN or the world Health Organization, you would have been treated so differently.” Well, there is much to the considered. But I am an America, maybe it is being an outspoken Black American that it the problem. That bring me to the thing I have discussed before, that it is a matter of how we value a human life. If that life does matter then why bother. Yes, we talk a good games, but when it really comes do to it, again I believe that we lack the will to really do anything about the problems that face this nation, including health inequities. As we move to a two tiered society, the haves and the have not, we will continue to blame one another about whose fault it is and really not face the real issues that confront us. rowing up, I always heard that Missouri was the “Show Me” State, so I had no idea what to expect once I arrived to Branson. It’s hard to believe that for a town that has a population of less than 11,000 people, they garner about eight million visitors every year. These travelers come near and far to be entertained, enlightened, and engaged with the cultural landscape and wholesome family atmosphere. Branson, Missouri is surrounded by three lakes and countless attractions and entertainment options, but in other ways, the destination has remained unchanged since the early days of settlement. The unspoiled Ozark Mountain vistas, wilderness and

Before I could enjoy the lay of the land, I couldn’t wait to settle in at The Village at Indian Point. This cozy condo is Branson’s premier Lakeside Resort and Conference Center on Table Rock Lake. The green foliage was intoxicating, and the tranquil patio breeze was oh so therapeutic. I couldn’t wait for Calgon to “take me away” in the oversized luxury Jacuzzi Bathtub. D

efamed cyclist Lance Armstrong is being sued for $120 million for allegedly defrauding the government by using performance-enhancing drugs. The suit comes as a result of Armstrong admitting that he used drugs to win his Tour de France titles from 1999-2005. This new case is in addition to the case brought on by Armstrong’s ex-teammate Floyd Landis. In the new suit, the government is also trying to find out how much Armstrong misled his once sponsor, the U. S. Postal Service. If U.S. Circuit Judge Robert Wilkins allows the new suit to go to trial and Armstrong looses over half the $221 million he earned as a professional cyclists will be gone. Avon to Cut 600 Jobs Say Good Bye to Juicy Couture

B

y July 1, 2014, all Juicy Couture stores in the U.S. will be a memory. According to ocregister.com, Juicy “… was cast off by Fifth & Pacific in October when the apparel giant opted to focus on Kate Spade, which the company bought in 2006. Fifth & Pacific sold rights to the Juicy name to Authentic Brands Group for $195 million in cash.” The Juicy Couture will now be sold at Kohl’s stores and online Kohls. com and JuicyCouture.com.

he famous door-to-door cosmetic company is cutting 600 jobs at its corporate office and North American businesses in an effort to reduce spending. Under the administration of Avon’s current CEO Sheri McCoy, product sales have been on a major decline resulting in the loss of jobs, the company cutting costs and leaving the company with unprofitable markets. This latest round of job cuts is expected to add approximately $50 million to the company’s annual savings. For more information, visit avon.com.

lackenterprise.com is reporting that an executive at a Los Angeles radio station owned by Univision has been fired for manipulating Nielsen’s ratings system by posing as a member of its sample audience. Nielsen sought to lessen the negativity by saying there was only one problematic household in the company’s audience pool. The revelation stems from KSCA-FM (101.9) and Nielsen Holdings, which did not name the executive in question who had access to measurement devices, according to published reports. The problems occurred in the May and April rating samples. Nielsen was then forced to postpone the release of ratings. For more information, visit Nielsen.com.
