rexit -- the stunning British vote to leave the European Union -- is a clear and dramatic rebuke of the country’s political and economic elites. A majority voted to leave even though the heads of the UK’s two major parties, more than a thousand corporate and bank CEOs, legions of economists, the leaders of Europe and the United States, and the heads of the international financial organizations all warned of dire consequences if they did not vote to remain. For Americans, one question is whether this result has implications for the 2016 presidential campaign. Political sea changes tend to cross national boundaries. Ronald Reagan’s election in 1980 tracked the rise of Margaret Thatcher to power in Great Britain. Bill Clinton’s New Democrats were mirrored by Tony Blair’s New Labour Party. So does Brexit presage the rise of Donald Trump in the United

ouston City Controller Chris Brown met Latino Texas PAC Leaders Tuesday to brief the PAC’s top contingent of civic and business builders on the City of Houston’s $2.3 billion Fiscal Year 2017 budget that will run the city July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, and to explain to the entrepreneurs the challenges he faces as the Chief Financial Officer for America’s fourth largest city. Brown, former Chief Deputy under his predecessor City Controller Ronald Green, and a much respected business expert in private and public finance issues, praised Mayor Sylvester

States? The Leave campaign slogan -- “Take back control” -- is mirrored by Trump’s “Make America great again.” The same economic insecurities, the sense of the system being rigged, the racial fears and the anger at immigrants that fueled the Leave campaign have elevated Trump’s candidacy. Like Trump, the Leave campaign expressed its scorn for experts and politicians. Like Trump, the campaign told a clear story to voters about how they got in the fix they are in, and who is to blame. In Britain, the vote divided along the lines of education, class and age. The better educated, more affluent and younger voted to stay. The less educated, less affluent and older voted to get out. Those campaigning to leave made appeals based on sovereignty, race and nativism. They campaigned against unaccountable bureaucrats and disdainful elites who rigged the system against working people. What surprised pollsters was the strong turnout by noncollege educated, older working people, who lined up to register their discontent. There is a clear warning here for Hillary Clinton. She is the quintessential establishment candidate, having been in Washington for the last 25 years. She has presented herself as a continuation of the Obama years. Her experience and expertise are universally acknowledged. But she is the candidate of the status quo at a time when people are looking for change.
Our political and economic elites tend to be in denial. They profit from globalization, take pride in the exercise of American power abroad, live in affluent communities, and often are closer to their international peers than to their poorer neighbors. They don’t see the America that has been ravaged by our ruinous trade policies. They avoid the killing streets of our impoverished urban neighborhoods. They were shaken by the Great Recession but largely have recovered. They don’t see that most Americans have lost ground over the course of this century. They simply don’t understand the scope of their failure to make this system work for working people -- for the majority of Americans. The Brexit vote showed that it is not enough to scorn the lies, exaggerations and divisive racial appeals of a demagogue. The Remain vote in Britain was explicitly a status quo vote -- the EU isn’t great, it seemed to say, but it is what we’ve got and our elites and experts say change would be catastrophic. But when people feel that the elites have failed them, that the system has been rigged to favor the few, that things are getting worse, not better, the invocation of authority in defense of the status quo loses force. People want to know what you will do to make things better. You’ve got to be able to tell a more convincing story that explains how we got where we are, who is to blame and what can be done about it. This is a
lesson that Clinton surely understands. The Brexit vote also reveals the comparative strength of the Democratic coalition here in the United States. Young people in Britain voted overwhelmingly against leaving; young people here will not vote for Trump. Minorities and immigrants -- a much smaller portion of the population in Britain -- voted against leaving; minorities here will not vote for Trump’s racist politics. The question is only whether the young and minorities will turn out in large numbers or whether, uninspired, they will stay home in large numbers. Turning them out also requires a campaign that gives them hope for a change, not simply a promise of more of the same. Brexit is a warning. There will be a reckoning. A divisive demagogue like Trump can profit in such times, but the politics of inclusion can beat the politics of division -- but only by offering people a new deal that gives them hope. Turner for unanimously passing his first budget with support from every district and at large council member in the 640 square mile city. “As a fiscal hawk, I applaud this budget spending $82 million less than our current budget. Despite pressing problems in the oil patch economy and job losses which have affected our tax base, the City of Houston is tightening its belt to lower expenses,” said Brown, who was elected in a runoff after emerging from a field of five candidates. In his first campaign, Brown bested five opponents, including two former council members, an elected judge and a former Houston CPA Society President. This budget was passed with input from Republicans and Democrats, veterans and freshmen on city council, and will hopefully pave the way for comprehensive financial reform that will solidify the city›s position for the long term. We need to continue to focus on prudent fiscal management going forward to continue to attract new businesses and private sector jobs across Houston,» said Brown, a Houston native, whose family has been in Houston civic and business leadership for more than 100 years. “This budget spends 59 percent of our funds on public safety, with the second largest portion -- 13 percent -- on debt service,” he said. An examination

of the budget reveals 66 percent is pledged to human capital expenses such as salary, benefits and pensions. The next area is eight percent for Human and Cultural Services, which is Health and Human Services, Housing and Community Development, Libraries and Parks. We must pledge people are our top priority. BOOK REVIEW
Famous Nathan
om always loved you best. I can beat you at that. You got more than me, more from Santa and a bigger birthday cake. I was Dad’s favorite, I’m better than you, and sibling rivalry can linger long past childhood. It’s not pretty and, as you’ll see in “Famous Nathan” by Lloyd Handwerker (with Gil Reavill), it can bring down an empire. Born in 1892 in Austria-occupied Poland, Nathan Handwerker was a go-getter, even as a boy: his family was poor and had many small mouths to feed so he, as the third-oldest son, begged his father to let him leave home to work. Eleven-year-old Handwerker found a series of jobs that paid little but he settled on one in a bakery, reasoning that he would never go hungry there. Living in Poland at the turn of the last century could be dangerous for a young Jewish man – gangs and military recruiters were on the hunt - so Handwerker began saving to move to America. He left the Netherlands in March, 1912 and upon his arrival in New York a month later, he quickly found a job, then another, and another. Remembering his life back home, he found employment in restaurants and worked his way up, toiling seven days a week while he learned English. While at his part-time job in Coney Island, Handwerker noticed a counter location that would make a perfect place to start a business. It took awhile for Nathan’s (later, Nathan’s Famous) to be successful; Handwerker was initially charging too much for his hot dogs but once he settled on a nickel apiece, two cents for a drink, “the store” started to take off. Coney Island was the place to be, for New Yorkers escaping the city; Nathan’s was
open year ‘round and became famous for speed and spectacle of service. Handwerker was at the store every day, sometimes for 20 hours a day but he still managed to marry and have three children – the younger two, both sons he hoped would someday take over the family business. As they say, though, all good things must end. Coney Island changed quite a bit in 1966, thanks to a man named Trump; and Nathan’s began to struggle, partly because of “small-is-beautiful versus big-isbetter debate” and good old-fashioned sibling rivalry. As business biographies go, I thought “Famous Nathan” was one of the tastier. Author Lloyd Handwerker, grandson of Nathan, starts his sweeping story with a Coney Island tradition, then moves in directions that truly couldn’t be more opposite. We travel from a competitive eating stage to the sleeping-pallet of an illiterate, dirt-poor immigrant who stumbled into his life’s work to avoid starvation, the irony of which is never allowed to be lost on readers. Handwerker’s storytelling (with Gil Reavill) is clear, lively, and filled with such twists. I thoroughly enjoyed it. From the first page, this is an easy book to like: it’s interesting, has a smooth timeline, and sometimes reads like a novel. If you’re hungry for that, “Famous Nathan” is a wiener. Supreme Court Strikes Down Texas Abortion Access Law
Newswire
n a dramatic ruling, the Supreme Court on Monday threw out a Texas abortion access law in a victory to supporters of abortion rights who argued it would have shuttered all but a handful of clinics in the state. The 5-3 ruling is the most significant decision from the Supreme Court on abortion in two decades and could serve to deter other states from passing socalled “clinic shutdown” laws. In joining with the liberal justices, perennial swing vote Justice Anthony Kennedy helped deliver a victory to abortion rights activists and signaled the court’s majority in their favor could continue regardless of the presidential election and the filling of the empty seat on the bench left by the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote the majority opinion, which was joined in full by Kennedy. Breyer wrote that despite arguments that the restrictions were designed to protect women’s health, the reality is that they merely amounted to burdening women who seek abortions. “There was no significant health-related problem that the new law helped to cure,” Breyer wrote. “We agree with the District Court that the surgical-center requirement, like the admittingprivileges requirement, provides few, if any, health benefits for women, poses a substantial obstacle to women seeking abortions, and constitutes an “undue burden” on their constitutional right to do so.” Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined Breyer’s opinion and wrote a brief concurring opinion, which focused on what she called women in “desperate circumstances.”

Supreme Court
“When a State severely limits access to safe and legal procedures, women in desperate circumstances may resort to unlicensed rogue practitioners, faute de mieux, at great risk to their health and safety,” she wrote. Impact of the law There were two provisions of the law at issue. The first said that doctors have to have local admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, the second says that the clinics have to upgrade their facilities to hospital-like standards. Critics say if the 2013 law, known as H.B. 2, is allowed to go into effect it could shutter all but a handful of clinics in a state with 5.4 million women of reproductive age.
www.StyleMagazine.com
T e x a s countered that the law was passed in response to the Kermit Gosnell scandal. The Pennsylvania man was convicted in 2013 of firstdegree murder for killing babies that were born alive in his clinic. S t a t e Solicitor General Scott Keller argued in court papers that if the court were to uphold the law, an abortion clinic “will remain open in each area where one will close, meaning that over 90% of Texas women of reproductive age will live within 150 miles of an open abortion clinic.” A federal appeals court upheld the Texas law in 2015, and last spring a majority of the Supreme Court voted to stay that ruling pending appeal. The four conservative justices at the time: John Roberts, along with Thomas, Alito and the late Justice Antonin Scalia, publicly noted that they would have denied the stay.

eep – Beep, who got the keys to the….Chevy Cruise? #TeamStyleMag does! Whether you are traveling from home to work or coasting down Interstate 45 to Galveston, this little engine that could will have you on your way. Let your hair down and jump behind the wheel of the RS Cruise for a driving experience that is worth your wild. The Chevrolet brand topped itself with this affordable, fuel-efficient, and stylish new compact sedan. The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has been completely redesigned getting revised styling and many new technology features compared to its predecessor. Come inside and check it out! Standing at 6’2, when I heard that I’d be reviewing the Chevy Cruze, I did not think it would be a good fit for me (size wise), but boy was I wrong. At first sight, I notice the popping Kinetic Blue Metallic paint job and the obvious new body style. Decked out in Premier trim with the spiffy RS appearance package, my test Cruze wore a unique front and rear styling, a spoiler, and handsome 18-inch aluminum wheels that comes only with the RS upgrade. As I sat behind the driver’s seat, the first words that came to mind were stylish and contemporary. The interior was especially attractive and visually appealing, totally setting the stage for everything that happens in the cabin of this car. There are also lots of soft-touch materials and stitching on the dash, seats, and door panels that complements the all black interior. The interior features were well laid out with easy to use controls, which is such a plus in all General Motors vehicles. I really appreciated the cell phone tray that keeps your phone from falling on the floor or sliding between the seats. There’s lots of technology to keep you connected too. Chevy includes their MyLink
Cruise in Style in the 2016 Cruze Sedan Premier! infotainment system, which employs the optional 8-inch screen. The inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto lets you enjoy a fully integrated smartphone experience that includes speaking and replying text options. T h e 2016 Chevy Cruze compact sedan comes in at a starting price tag under $20,000 ($17,495) for the base model – but be careful with the options – because you can get it up to $30,000 in the blink of an eye. My tested 2016 Cruze Sedan Premier had an M.S.R.P. of $29,035.00. This tested Premier came with a number of options that dialed up the price quickly. The Convenience package ($865) adds heated rear seats (which I thought was so cool to see in a midsize sedan), auto-air conditioning, auto-dimming rearview mirror, wireless charging (an added plus), and 110-volt AC power outlet perfect for quick charging items like iPads or smart tablets. The RS package ($995) adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, rear spoiler, and sport body kit giving the body of the car sleek definitions. The Sun and Sound package ($1,995) adds navigation, a sunroof, a color
driver information center, a larger 8-inch center touchscreen display, and a nine-speaker Bose audio system giving you surround like no other in its class. The Kinetic Blue Metallic paint ($395) finishes out the options. The new aerodynamic exterior design is more than just for appearance – through research, I found out it also keeps wind noise to a minimum. The cabin is quiet at higher speeds and the ride is smooth for a compact car even with the larger 18-inch wheels. In a nutshell, the Cruze tackled the commute with no problems as I navigated throughout the city streets and busy highways of Houston. If you a seeking a car that is a good urban commuter during the week that will handle double duty on the weekends if necessary, the 2016 Cruze Sedan is your car! Akima Taylor: Lessons from the Heart
Obala, Speial to Style
kima Taylor is a wife, mother and a registered nurse. As a medical professional, she is well aware of the risk factors of heart disease and stroke, but like many people, she never thought it would happen to her. Her family history gave no indication that she was at risk yet at 38 years old, she had a heart attack. In November 2013, Taylor was busy with life, she was working as a critical care nurse, busy being a mother to three beautiful children, and preparing for a large family dinner for Thanksgiving when she first noticed she was feeling tired completing simple tasks. She brushed it off as being overly busy. One day in particular, Taylor felt tightness in her chest and shortness of breath. When she checked her blood pressure, she noticed it was higher than normal. Taylor decided to call her doctor who immediately told her she needed to get to the emergency room. She was having a heart attack. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer for all Americans and stroke is the fifth leading cause of death. African-Americans, however, face even higher risks of cardiovascular diseases because of high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. When Taylor was diagnosed by her doctor, she was in complete disbelief that with no immediate history of heart disease, that this had happened to her. “The diagnosis was transiently
paralyzing. My mind immediately moved to “what is my next step” and “where do I go in my health from here?” Taylor said. “I did not think I had heart disease; I knew I had to do some soul searching to Akima Taylor pinpoint the cause.” Taylor did not have high cholesterol, was a non-smoker, nondiabetic and, as far as she knew, she was in good health. Her family has always been active and she has been well within her body index for her weight and height. She did have high blood pressure and was leading a sedentary lifestyle which are both contributing factors to an increased risk of heart disease. Hypertension, the medical term for high blood pressure, is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke among Hispanics. Among AfricanAmericans who experienced a stroke, 72 percent had high blood pressure, compared to 66 percent in non-Hispanic whites. “As a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas, I get paid good money to know risk factors, diseases and
outcomes. I can rattle them off faster than my social security number! I had no idea that I would ever fall into that equation,” Taylor said. Black women have higher prevalence rates of high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity and diabetes than white women. The prevalence of high blood pressure in AfricanAmericans in the United States is the highest in the world. “I allowed life to get in the way of my health. I lost my athleticism/ activity and took on a sedentary lifestyle. I began to slowly put on pounds and ignored daily activity requests by my physician because I was so busy!” As a result of this experience, Taylor has made some significant lifestyle changes to improve her family’s health. “I now make myself exercise 2-3 times a week. I have cut out 80% out of my red meat consumption and eat plenty of fresh vegetables, poultry and seafood. In our home, we live by the 80/20 rule where 80% of our meals are consumed in our home so we can control what we eat and how much we eat. The other 20% of our meals are consumed at school, work, birthday parties, etc.,” Taylor said. “This process did not happen overnight. It took a lot of encouragement from my husband and hitting rock bottom in how I was physically feeling. My mind was strong, but in reality I was tired all of the time. I came to the reality that I was having a loss of long-term and short-term
memory and that my thoughts were foggy. It was at that point that I stood up, took a good look at myself and decided to take steps towards changing my lifestyle and my family’s.” According to the American Heart Association, heart disease can be prevented by practicing healthy eating habits and frequent physical activity. These habits can also be passed along to younger generations. The more you know about your family’s health history, the more you can do to reduce your risk and family’s risk of heart disease. “I am living proof that life is better on this side of health! I speak to people all the time on the importance of lifestyle change and encourage them to take it one day at a time,” said Taylor. “I am now the walking billboard of health for my family and close friends. I do not want anyone to live a debilitated life that is EASILY preventable.” Taylor’s final words of advice for people who have suffered a heart attack is to reflect on the lessons she has learned from her experience. “You are alive…breathe easy,” Taylor said. FEATURE
Senator Rodney Ellis:
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
A
solid reputation and a legacy of experience are a stable foundation to build one’s trust in people. The people of Texas have been building their trust in Senator Rodney Ellis for years. As he represented them on various levels of government, advocating for the good and the right, Senator Ellis has been a mainstay and a voice for so many on the political scene. He has a heart for people. Born in the nucleus of his district, Senator Ellis served on Houston City Council and for the late U.S. Congressman Mickey Leland before completing his twenty-six year stretch as a state senator. This has given him name recognition and made him a clear front-runner for the Commissioner’s seat left vacant by the untimely death of El Franco Lee. Now officially having become the Democratic nominee, complete with the blessing of Kaye Lee (window of El Franco Lee), Senator Ellis stands poised to take on the post pending no opposition from other parties, which is highly unlikely. Senator Ellis has said that he has dedicated his life to service and is proud of the work he has done thus far passing over 630 bills as a Senator. However, he feels at this time he could be more effective on the local level. “Sadly, extreme partisanship has narrowed the agenda in state government, and the needs of millions are being sacrificed and ignored to score cheap political points. More and more, local government is taking the initiative, doing the hard work, and implementing the policies to enact positive change.” Senator Ellis continued, “Today, the best and most effective way to solve the challenges facing our community – from criminal justice reforms to ensuring area seniors’ quality of life – is through strong leadership at the local level, and I believe I can best serve the people of Harris County by fighting for progress on the Harris County Commissioners Court.” As a Harris County Commissioner, Senator Ellis, like Lee, would be the only African American and the only Democrat on the five-member court. He will also manage a budget of $200 million and help governed one of the largest counties in the nation. Coming into the office, Ellis has his eyes focused on major issues of healthcare, infrastructure, jail reform, quality of life for citizens, and the extensive list goes on. Ellis wants to hit them all. Supporting Medicaid Expansion According to Senator Ellis, Medicaid expansion is needed to save the county money. “With a $15 billion investment in Medicaid expansion, Texas could draw down $100 billion in federal dollars over 10 years and create 300,000 jobs.” He continued to note that the influx of dollars to communities would help homeowners by giving them some much needed tax relief. “In Harris County, this would mean the possible reduction of over $900 million that Harris County taxpayers currently pay for indigent care, insuring over 300,000 of our local residents and bringing over $750 million in new healthcare spending and 60,000 jobs to our local economy.” Currently, two Republican Commissioners are in support for Medicaid expansion. Jail Reform The problems with the jails are plentiful but without proper funding it is hard to address the needs. Ranking the issues in order of important is too arduous of a task. Senator Ellis has a plan to focus on over crowding and finding funds to address the needs to

Fighting for Progress on the Harris County Commissioners Court needs and ensure that they are informed of the latest developments on the Commissioners’ Court and other County-related happenings. “My office will maintain its responsibility to serve the people,” a committed Ellis said. Merging the Lee’s Legacy with the Ellis’ Legacy
Rodney Ellis bring solutions as best as he can. “Through pushing smart-on-crime diversion, bail bond and indigent defense reforms, I will work to reduce both the overall population and budget for the county jail,” commented Senator Ellis. Public Transportation Where to put MetroRail is always an ongoing debate. Having both pros and cons for where the next line is placed. Always having the people’s interest at heart, Senator Ellis wants to work with Mayor Sylvester Turner and other leaders to meet the needs of resident and concerns of the city. “I am committed to a comprehensive, multimodal transportation system that includes improved roads, buses, light rail, commuter rail, BRT, biketrails and improved walkability for pedestrians. As an urban commissioner, one of my top priorities would be making sure that wherever residents live, they are connected to employment centers. A person’s income or neighborhood should not dictate their access to viable transportation options,” stated Senator Ellis. Open Government The issues of the day are the not the only things on his plate. He wants to make the Commissioner’s Court more for the people by making government more transparent. Implementation of this would take Senator Ellis being a commanding soundboard, something he is no stranger to, for issues that are not usually addressed. Resources will be on his size to accomplish this. As a county commissioner, he will have access to a larger staff, which means more people to stretch across the county to meet the demand and hear the issues of Precinct One residents. Engaging the community is the first step in knowing what to do. If one does not know the problem, how can one address it, right? Senator Ellis will further extend that engagement with the community by holding quarterly breakfast and lunch events for precinct chairs and community leaders to obtain their input on pressing community
www.StyleMagazine.com
Senator Ellis has some big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of El Franco Lee after 30 years. His history in politics has afforded the goods to hit the ground running with the relationships he has made on both sides and the work he has already done to create his own legacy of service. In as much as Senator Ellis has his own mission and agenda as a commissioner, he does not want to leave the work of Lee unfinished. Finding that line to seal the legacy of one man to start another will be a challenge but he won’t go at it alone. He plans to meet with Kaye Lee to discuss the vision and review the work of her late husband. But he made it clear that he is not trying to be or replace Lee. He can only be Rodney Ellis. “The sudden passing of Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee was a shock to us all, one which leaves a huge void in our community and hearts. El Franco was a close friend, colleague, and mentor for decades, and he always put the needs of his constituents first. El Franco leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to service that cannot be replaced, only built upon,” a solemn Ellis expressed. Showing His Personal Side Before I let Senator Ellis go I wanted to get to know the personal side of the man. So here are a few fun facts just to get to know the person behind the political machine. His favorite food is grapes. He is a bit of a health junkie and has adopted a healthy lifestyle so he stays fit by eating vegan. Finding time to relax when you are working for the people can be hard but when Ellis manages to find some down time he is most at home on a bike riding on one of Houston’s great hike-and-bike trails. Hence, why he is such a huge supporter of the BP MS 150 that has bikers trek across Texas for an awesome cause. The answer to my last question was no surprise. I asked what makes him happiest. It was a no brainer for him, serving people. “I have been in public service since serving on the Houston City Council in 1984. What makes me happiest is the ability to positively impact the lives of my constituents and other Texans,” Senator Ellis said with a smile. Still beaming with excitement about his pending new post, Senator Ellis will take the rest of the year to finish out his final term as state senator. He is expected to be sworn in as Harris County Commissioner in January 2017. This will then leave his Senate seat warm for his successor. Although he would not comment on who he would like to sit in that seat, I know he wishes them well. “For the past quarter century, it has been my sincerest privilege to represent District 13 in the Texas Senate. I am extremely proud of that service and believe I have a record of success on a wide array of issues benefiting the people of Harris County.” That you do Senator Ellis. And here’s to another long record of successful service as Harris County Commissioner.

To add some variety to your party menu, you can even create multiple tubs, each designated for a different brat flavor. This recipe shows how easy and delicious this trick can be, Brat Hot Tub especially when you start with a burst of flavor from a seasonal favorite like Johnsonville’s Firecracker Bratwurst, Hatch Green Chile or Jalapeno Cheddar. Simone Biles Turning the Gymnastics World On Its Side
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
M
ary Lou Retton, the Olympic gold medalist in the all-around in 1984, calls her the top gymnast in history. Nastia Liukin, the Olympic gold medalist in 2008, said she is a lock for the gold medal at the Rio Games. Who is the powerhouse of whom they speak? None other than nineteen-year-old, 4ft 8 in, half-pint, Simone Biles that is flipping the world of gymnastics on its side. Haven’t heard of her? Get to know the name. Come this August her name will be on everyone’s lips. Biles holds several records and could easily be the most decorated gymnast in history. Currently racking up fourteen medals with ten of them being gold, Biles holds the record for most golds won by a female gymnast in the history of the World Champions. She is the first African American to be a world all-around champion and the only one – male or female – to have won the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships three years straight. Her most recent win of her fourth consecutive national titles in the all – around event at the U.S. women’s gymnastics has not been done by another woman in 42 years. And the best part of her story is that she has ties to our area. Although not a native of Texas, Biles has planted her roots here. Coming to the Spring area when she was just six-years-old with her younger sister Adria when her grandfather and his wife adopted them. Biles and her sister know the pair as much more than grandparents but simply parents after her mother could not care for them. Biles has two older siblings who were adopted by her grandfather’s sister. Her spark in gymnastics began after a simple field trip to Bannon’s Gymnastics. Upon her return
Biles
home, Biles demanded to be enrolled and that was that. Her path would then cross with Aimee Boorman, Bannon gymnastics coach, who took particular interest in Biles’ natural ability. Boorman became Biles’ personal coach, surrogate mom, and all around supporter. The more Biles trained, the more people
took notice. She would next catch the eye of famed coached Martha Karolyi and begin training at her ranch in Huntsville, TX. The Karolyi Ranch is most famous for being the training grounds for the official U.S. women’s national team under the watchful eyes of Martha and her husband Bela. They have been dominate figures in U.S. gymnastics for decades. Biles was certainly in good stock. Her star has continued to shoot up from there. Her announcement to go pro last summer has launched Biles into a marketer’s dream, especially with the Olympic games approaching. She has deals with Nike, Core Power, and GK Elite to name a few. Those are great perks but going pro did cost Biles to give up her scholarship at the University of California. But she knew she had to strike the iron while it was hot in her prime. She wanted to set herself up financially and then go back to college. She had already seen how Olympic Gymnastic sweetheart Gabby Douglas had racked up an estimated $10 million from endorsements and sponsors from her performances at last summer games. In addition to endorsement deals, Biles is the face and inspiration behind her parents’ latest business venture. Ron and Nellie Biles opened a new state-ofthe-art gym, the World Champions Centre, in Spring this past May. The gym is mainly for the community but Biles get her kicks in every now and then.
