ast week, Google made the bold and necessary decision to release information about their employment diversity, detailing the race and gender makeup of its workforce, admitting in the words of Senior Vice President Laszlo Bock, “Google is not where we want to be when it comes to diversity and it’s hard to address these kinds of challenges if you’re not prepared to discuss them openly. It is time for other Silicon Valley companies to follow Google’s lead. According to reporter Mike Swift of the San Jose Mercury News, leading tech firms -- Apple, Oracle, Yahoo and Applied Materials -- waged an 18-month fight against a freedom of information request for their workforce data, lobbying the Labor Department to treat it as a trade secret. But as Google’s figures -- and those of Intel, which was the first to release its employment data -- show, Silicon Valley has a big problem with equal opportu-

Silicon Valley and Diversity nity. And, as Bock states, you can’t fix what you won’t admit. You can’t face the truth that you hide from. And the problem is serious. Google reports that 83 percent of its tech workforce is male, as well as 79 percent of its leadership. Ninety-four percent of its tech workforce is white or Asian, with only 2 percent Hispanic and 1 percent Black. It starts at the top. Ninety-five percent of its leadership is white or Asian, with only 2 percent black and 1 percent Hispanic. This lack of diversity, the absence of equal opportunity for women and minorities, is a big deal. These are, after all, the companies that are creating the inventions and the markets of the future. The area south of San Francisco Bay is growing about twice as fast as the rest of the country. Unemployment in the tech sector is down to 1-3 percent. The companies argue that this isn’t about discrimination but about merit. But this is much more a case of an old boys’ network. Referrals play a major role in hiring, and they come from networks dominated by white and Asian men. Pipelines are set up to draw from the old pool. Many of the Asians are from abroad, here on limited visas, allowing the companies to pay them less. The companies argue that this starts in college, where a mere 12 percent of computer science undergraduate degrees at major universities going to women. But that is less a reflection
of the absence of talent, than talent as the absence of outreach. Instead of resisting reform, these companies should be leading it. Startups with diverse staffs are more likely to be successful, according to FastCompany, an industry magazine. Minorities and women are major users of social media and purchasers of technology products. Diverse companies are more likely to anticipate the needs and the desires of their customers. Other companies should now join Google and Intel and publish data on their workforce diversity. This week, Operation Push will send the leading companies a letter requesting action, and we’ll report on which respond and which do not. Once they fess up to the scope of the problem, the companies should be creative and entrepreneurial in responding. They should pioneer new ways to encourage young women and minorities to get involved in computer science and engineering. They should reach out in recruitment, setting targets and timetables. Intern programs can offer women and minorities a way in. And let us not forget, more than half of the jobs in tech companies are not science/engineering/tech related. To say that potential tech workers must be rocket scientists is a diversion. They work in HR, finance, law, sales and marketing, administration -- there is a huge talent pool that can and must be tapped.

Blacks and people of color represent money and talent. Tech companies have resources, innovation and capital. There’s a basis a mutually beneficial, reciprocal relationship. And the companies should aggressively open up from the top down. Boards don’t have to be composed exclusively of tech people. Their IPOs can be managed by diverse firms, not just the old white boy crowd. Their suppliers should be diverse. This month, Google will send representatives to the Rainbow Push national convention in Chicago to meet with presidents from historically black colleges that teach computer science and engineering. Other companies should send representatives as well. Reaching out will inspire interest and help identify skilled future employees. By 2040, America will be a majority minority country. Polls show that this scares many Americans, but it should inspire, not scare, tech companies. The customers of the future will be increasingly diverse. Companies should act aggressively now to ensure that their workforce reflects the customers they are trying to reach. Google has joined Intel to break open the door. 4 boneless New York (top loin) pork chops, about 1-inch thick 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup panko bread crumbs, (Japanese-style bread crumbs) 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese Brush pork with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Let stand for 15 to 30 minutes. In small bowl, mix panko and Parmesan together. Prepare medium-hot fire in grill. Place chops on grill and close lid. Grill over direct heat for four minutes. Turn chops and sprinkle panko mixture over tops. Close lid and continue grilling for 4-5 minutes more, or until topping is lightly browned and internal temperature of pork on meat thermometer measures between 145°F (medium rare) and 160°F degrees F (medium). Remove from grill and let rest for three minutes.

The slogan hopes to address the needs businesses have for young untapped talent. Texans Urged to Enroll in State Electricity Discount Program
tate Representative Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) is urging qualified low-income Texans to enroll in LITE-UP Texas, a program authorized by the Texas Legislature through which participants can reduce the monthly cost of their electric service by 82%. The LITE-UP Texas program is designed to help qualified low-income individuals who live in areas where they can choose their own electricity provider to reduce their monthly cost of electric service. Customers qualify if they currently receive Texas Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Customers can also self-enroll if their household income is at or below 125% of the federal poverty guideline, which equates to a family of four having an income of $29,000. Individuals not currently participating in the LITE-UP Texas program can obtain a self-enrollment application by contacting the PUC toll-free at 1-866-454-8387 or visiting the PUC’s website, http://www.puc.texas. gov/consumer/lowincome/assistance.aspx. It will begin Thursday, June 12th where he will kick off “HAW” with an event at Minute Maid Park. Drake also announced that he would take it back to where it all started in 2009 to Warehouse Live. The 26-year-old is known for pushing the envelop with her fashion statements and being one of the only celebs who seems to be able to get away with them.

He has attempted to kiss Will Smith, steal a Grammy from Jennifer Lopez, and climbed up America Ferrera’s gown. Pitt feels that this man could potential spoil movie premieres for fans who simply want an autograph and a selfie because celebs will be less likely to approach the crowd.

eople are starting to get a little too comfortable with social media, one in particular Khloe Kardashian. Kardashian recently posted a picture to Instagram of her and rumored boyfriend French Montana drinking champagne while Montana French Montana and Khole Kardasian is holding up a machine gun. Her caption read, “About to go Gucci maaannnnnn. #movieset #justdifferent.” The shot is said to be from DJ Khaled’s new music video, but that didn’t stop fans from telling her how they really felt. Many fans were not happy with Kardashian’s picture, some comments read, “Guns should not be glamorized” and “So disrespectful to those who have lost people recently.” Fans see Kardashian as a role model and she caught a lot of heat from this photo.

There were two credit card bills in yesterday’s mail, you owe your neighbor ten bucks, and if you had a savings account… well, let’s just say you don’t much. And yes, there are opportunities to be had; you just have to be on the lookout for them. “Riches,” says Kimbro, “are lying everywhere for the observant eye.” In order to find them, though, you’ll need to think and act like a millionaire, and two of the “common factors” Kimbro discovered about Black millionaires are their “relentless commitment to lifelong learning” and their focus on a purpose in life. Millionaires also utilize their unique strengths to “master whatever
field [they] enter.” They’re self-starters with “grit” and a strong work ethic, inquisitiveness, and they understand that ideas have power. They practice thrift, salesmanship, and spirituality. And for them, failure is not an option. To step on your own personal path to wealth, learn how to “add value” – not only for your customers but for employees and your community at large. Be an optimist. Read all that you can to educate yourself (and to set an example: recent studies show that nearly half of Black 17-year-olds are “functionally illiterate”). Understand that looking rich and being rich are often two vastly different things. Don’t be afraid of work; in fact, love your work and stop being afraid of Mondays. Learn how to network and how to stop wasting time. Practice Praise. Believe in yourself, know who you are, and play up your strengths. Invest in yourself. And finally, own your own business: that, says Kimbro, is one of the major “laws” of wealth. Tired of nothing but dust in your wallet? Sick of paying with pennies? Fulton Readies for Republican State Convention in Fort Worth
evin Fulton, a Houston attorney and active community volunteer, has been busy this week preparing to join 10,000 neighbors from across Texas in Fort Worth where he will speak on panels about urban issues as a delegate to his second Republican Party of Texas State Convention. “I heard for years people complain to me about Texas policies and politics and especially what I heard among fellow African Americans was anger about Republicans. Specifically in north Houston where I lived and practiced law, I heard hostility about how a local judge was treating my neighbors of color, single moms and others,” said Fulton who ran in the Republican Primary for Justice of the Peace in Harris County Pct. 4 in 2012 and then was one of a few African Americans elected to represent America’s second largest state at the Republican National Convention. “Like far too many young black men I never knew my father, he left my mother Pearl mere months after I was born. I was born in South Central Los Angeles to a tough mom that worked hard to get us from the inner-city ghetto to the middle class. Pearl never blamed our race or society for where we were, instead she taught me the importance of prayer, self-accountability and hard work to conquer poverty. My mom taught me to never accept things the way the way were or how people said to me they were but to fight from inside to get everyone included in making things better for all,” he said about his upbringing that led him to enlist in the US Army after high
school.

My drive is for them to live in a state and country where not only are they not judged by their color but the content of their character but for them to know to judge others not by color but to learn others character too. When I ran for judge I found respect not expected from the most ardent TEA Party rebels among Republicans when I got to know them and they got to know me. I will continue to work with and from that to build a better Harris County, Texas and America,” he said.

Houston Hosts 2014 Civil Rights Game

ouston Astros’ Bo Porter, Quinton McCracken, Jon Singleton, Chris Carter, Dexter Fowler, Jerome Williams, L. J. Hoes and others players of color stand on the shoulders of baseball ground breakers like Bud Fowler, Moses Fleetwood Walker, Frank P. Thompson, Dan McClellan, Chet Brewer and Jackie Robinson who took those first vital steps to make it possible for ball players of color to play America’s favorite game. Struggling through racial hatred, these pioneers of baseball opened the eyes of the world to see that African Americans and others of color had unspeakable talent and exemplary character that made all questioned the bias of segregation from the game and change the course of the civil rights movement. If you don’t know your past, yon can’t appreciate your present. Major League Baseball knows the past for the African American baller was one of filled with many highs and lows. But due to the efforts of those visionary first ball players, many reap rewards but there is still work to be done. MLB honors the toils of modern day heroes of whom continue to push the envelope in an effort to make all equal in the folds of the diamond with the annual Civil Rights Game. Something that started small in 2007 in Memphis has grown from one game to a series of events to reflect on how far the game has come. Houston had the privilege of hosting this year’s bevy of activities. Houston etched their mark in history of black baseball starting in the 1880s and the home team paid homage to those early semipro and pro-

fessional black teams by wearing the jerseys of the Houston Eagles who called Houston home in 1949-1950. The Eagles, which were the only Negro baseball team in Texas, came to Houston during a time when the Negro American League was hanging on by a thread after Jackie Robinson integrated the game in 1947. Blacks weren’t coming to all blacks games now that blacks could play in MLB. At the time, Houston had one of the largest black populations and it was thought that the Eagles could revitalize the league. Although the Eagles had plenty of talent, when the team made the big move from New Jersey to Texas attendance still didn’t pick up since players weren’t widely known. More popular players had signed with white teams. Another blow to the Eagles was that they placed last during the season and they were supported by black media of the day. The team eventually moved to New Orleans. Despite the Eagles rocky road in Houston, they reigned as kings of the diamond again on last weekend when the current Houston Astros put on replicate jerseys of the Eagles and the opposing Baltimore Orioles wore the jerseys of the Baltimore Elite Giants, who played from 1938-1950. Before the start of the game in front of over 38,000 fans, boxing legend and Houston native George Foreman threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Also in attendance were MLB Beacon Awards honorees legendary hall of fame NFL star Jim Brown, founder of Motown Berry Gordy, and Baseball Commis-

sioner Bud Selig. The Astros didn’t disappoint as they won their seventh straight game. Earlier that day at the MLB Beacon Awards Brown, Gordy and the late Dr. Maya Angelou were honored at the 2014 MLB Beacon Awards. Brown received the MLB Beacon of Hope for the actions he took in the 1960s to support Muhammad Ali’s stance against serving in the Vietnam War and rallied behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s right not to participate in the 1968 Olympics. Brown also made contributions to the growth of black economics by establishing the Negro Industrial Union to create businesses and jobs. All know Gordy as the founder of Motown but it is not widely known about his activism to allow the voices of black political activists to be heard. He released recording of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and created the Black Forum for others as Stokely Carmichael, Ossie Davis, Langston Hughes and many more to be heard. Hence, why MLB honored him with the MLB Beacon of Change award. It is no questioned why MLB recognized Dr. Angelou with the Beacon of Life award. Her words have inspired millions to be phenomenal giving them a new lease on life to accomplish extraordinary things. Only the second poet in U.S. History to write and recite her original poetry at a Presidential Inauguration, Dr. Angelou is one of America’s greatest voices of contemporary black literature. Adding more star power to this lineup was a beacon in journalism, Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, who was the

keynote; singer/songwriter who just made his debut on Billboard Hot 100, Aloe Blacc; and Grammy Award-winning violinist/producer, UN Goodwill Ambassador, humanitarian and Global Brand Ambassador of Harman Kardon, Miri Ben-Ari.Two Houston based organizations received major love as Change Happens! and the Houston Area Urban League were the beneficiary of charitable donations from the MLB Beacon Awards. The day before baseball got serious with the Baseball and Civil Rights Movement Roundtable Discussion with panelists who discussed the role baseball played in the civil rights movement. Offering their thoughts were panelists Little Rock Nine’s Ernest Green, Colorado Rockies Ownership Group’s Linda Alvardo, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum’s President Bob Kendrick, Houston Astros legend J. R. Richard, and MLB Network Analyst and two time MLB All-Star Harold Reynolds. Moderated by Harvard Law School Professor Dr. Charles Ogletree, the discussion also hit the topics of present day issues affecting the country and the world. hysical activity is more likely to determine a woman’s risk of heart disease than other factors, including high blood pressure, obesity and smoking, according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Queensland (Australia), analyzed data on more than 32,000 women, and found that a sedentary lifestyle was the leading risk factor for heart disease at every age from the early 30s to the late 80s. The study measured the top four heart disease risk factors—obesity, smoking, hypertension and physical inactivity. Combined, the factors account for more than 50 percent of heart disease worldwide. “We have to get everyone to move more,” says lead author Wendy Brown, director of the university’s Center for Research on Exercise, Physical Activity and Health. “From about age 30, physical activity levels decline. We need to do everything we can to prevent this.” Though smoking tended to drive heart disease rates for younger women, in those older than 30, researchers found that low levels of physical activity increased a woman’s risk of heart disease by 33 percent for middle-aged women and 24 percent for older women. If every woman between the ages of 30 and 90 got up off the sofa for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (recommendations are the same in Australia and the United States), the researchers concluded that the lives of more than 2,000 middle-aged and older women could be saved each year. “Aerobic exercise and activity is very important for cardiovascular and metabolic health, and

H&M Falsely Arrests Oregon Woman H&M shells out $105K to an Oregon after she was falsely arrested attending the store opening at the Clackamas Town Center mall. The Associated Press reports that Brenda Moaning was the only black shopping during the store opening. Although she was not doing anything out of the norm and paid for her purchases she still was followed by security around the store. When she decided to add a shirt to her purchase at the last minute, Moaning prepaid for the shirt and the cashier told her to pick up on her way out. Following instructions, Moaning picked up the shirt and showed it to the cashier. That’s when security showed her the handcuffs and she was arrested on the spot. IFest Foundation Files for Bankruptcy

he organization that brings the Houston International Festival is said to filing for protection under Chapter 7 federal bankruptcy laws according to the Houston Chronicle. The nonprofit organization, IFest Foundation, is said to owe $1 million+. Low ticket sales and increase competition pool have made the organization to fall on hard times. CNN is reporting that some LinkedIn users have received emails from the company in recent days informing them that their posts will not be shown in mainland China. “This is due to specific requirements within China to block certain content so that it does not appear on our network in that country,” the messages explain. Beijing has been on high alert as the anniversary approaches. Mentions of the massacre are forbidden on Chinese social media, and many search terms are banned. Stephen Colbert Gets Nasty with Amazon

NN is reporting that the feud between Stephen Colbert and Amazon is getting personal. Colbert took some time Wednesday night on his Comedy Central show to say he was angry at Amazon for “deterring customers” from buying his books.The comedian even offered viewers stickers saying “I didn’t buy it on Amazon” that they can download from his site. Colbert, who’s publisher is Hachette, took Amazon to task for what Hachette has said is Amazon’s slow restocking of some of its books. Hachette says it’s causing “available in 2-4 weeks” messages to appear on titles by Colbert, Malcolm Gladwell, novelist James Patterson, and others. Amazon has reportedly been pressuring Hachette to let it lower prices for e-books and ultimately pay Hachette less for them. Hachette has resisted. In statement last week about the apparent log-jam Amazon said, “Unfortunately, despite much work from both sides, we have been unable to reach mutually-acceptable agreement on terms.” And it doesn’t seem like there’s an end in sight to the tiff.
