COMMENTARY

Mississippi’s Sore Loser

Jesse Jackson

T

he loser, Tea Party stalwart Chris McDaniel, is now contesting Republican Senator Thad Cochran’s victory in the bitter Republican Senate primary in court. Cochran clearly benefited from strategic voting by African Americans who crossed over to vote in the Republican primary to stop McDaniel’s extremist candidacy. Under Mississippi’s open primary laws, anyone can vote in either party’s primary. Anyone can vote in a primary run-off if they hadn’t voted in the other party’s primary previously in that year. So in Mississippi, African Americans hearing McDaniel’s vow to vote against education funding and other extreme positions clearly responded to Cochran’s appeals and vot-

race for re-election as Mayor of Hattiesburg in 2013. A poisonous publication known as the Hattiesburg Patriot urged “Republicans and Libertarians” to “turn out in mass on May 7 and cast a vote either (sic) against DuPree (sic) and for Thomas Garmon.” The idea was to “primary out” DuPree. Strategic voting was designed to be used by majority white Mississippi voters to block minority African American progress. But the Constitution prohibits limiting the privilege of cross over voting to whites only. Now African Americans have used the open primary to vote strategically to elect a candidate who they believe better serves their interests and to stop the Tea Party challenger who they perceived as a threat. Cochran was smart enough - and desperate enough after coming in behind McDaniel in the initial vote - to appeal to African Americans. His campaign reached out to ministers and opinion leaders, and worked to engage African American voters. This is stark contrast to business as usual. For example, South Carolina also has open primaries, and one-third of the elec-

torate is black. But in the bitterly contested Republican presidential primary there in 2012, as former Speaker Newt Gingrich was assailing Mitt Romney, neither Romney nor any other contender reached out to the black community. They fought it out, simply ignoring one-third of the electorate. Cochran decided that to win he had no choice but to reach out. McDaniel now says his opponent “stole” the election that was a “sham, plain and simple.” He’s outraged because the laws weren’t supposed to work like this. But African Americans were just playing by the same set of rules that had been established by whites. And now that they’ve discovered the power of strategic voting, they are likely to exercise it more in the future. You can write to the Rev. Is President Obama the Worst President Since WWII or One of the Best?

here was a survey released Wednesday (July 2, 2014) by Quinnipiac University that asked the question, “Who is the worst President since WWII?” President Obama came in first place and behind him was President George W. Bush. Of course a lot of this has to do with the fact that these two presidents are in this decade, but it also has a lot to do with a generational divide. According to the poll, Ronald Reagan (at 35%) tops the list of the best president since WWII, with 18% saying Bill Clinton was best, followed by John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama each at 8%. There’s this fascination with Ronald Reagan when the truth is he’s the one that basically decimated Unions in this country and introduced drug laws that gutted inner cities. The further removed we get from him the more people simply forget or just don’t care. President George W. Bush deregulated Wall Street and changed the course of National Security and privacy invasion with the Patriot Act. Deregulation of Wall Street and banks are what lead to her of, if not the worst recession since The Great Depression.

Page 4

ed in numbers that were large enough to take him to victory. McDaniel now wants the runoff results overturned, arguing presumably that African American voters violated the law by voting in a Republican primary when they intend to vote for Democratic candidate in the general election. But of course, there is no way to determine that. The irony here is that Mississippi’s open primary laws with run-offs if no one receives a majority in the first round were passed as part of a package of legislation to counter the effects of the Voting Rights Act and to try to block African Americans from gaining political office. In hearings on the act, supporters openly admitted that its purpose was to help block the election of a “minority candidate” winning a primary with a “bloc vote.” The theory was that white voters of both parties could vote strategically in Democratic primaries to block the nomination of a black candidate. Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree, the African American who was the Democratic nominee for Governor in 2012, experienced this in his

President Barack Obama

Most of the people polled don’t really care about facts though they care about perception. Whenever people can’t find work or see their loved ones struggling someone has to be the face of that. For a lot of America, they’ve made President Obama the face of all that’s wrong with our country. This poll says more about how

July 10 - July 16, 2014

we are regressing as a country than anything else. The Supreme Court ruled that Hobby Lobby has the right to not cover birth control but Viagra is okay. In a recent vote every single Republican member of Congress voted against a bill that would give equal pay to women. Right now states are in Civil Wars with each other over gay mar-

www.StyleMagazine.com

riage, birth control, immigration and affirmative action. Issues that I thought were settled in the 60’s. There are more “hate groups” in the past six years then there have been since WWII combined. All of this started around the time President Obama came into office. Is that a coincidence? 45% polled even said that Mitt Romney would be a better President. This is the same Romney that literally went out of his way to tell the country that, “I did it on my own so you all should too.” Ask a person under 40 about President Obama and see the response you get. Ask a person over 50 and you’re more than likely to get the death stare. He’s not the worst President since WWII, if anything he’s one of the best with the obstacles of the Senate and the economy he inherited. You can read more about the poll on reliablesources.blogs.cnn.com! You can read more from Demez at demezw.com.

ince the beginning of this year more than 52,000 immigrant children have made their way to the US by crossing the border. The massive numbers has stretched the resources as well as federal officials to thin leading to bed shortages and a backup in processing. In an effort to give a temporary solution to this problem the federal government is considering turning the vacnt HISD’s Terrell Middle School campus into a shelter for the immigrant children. President Barack Obama has agreed to meet with Governor Rick Perry to further address the issue of border control.

hat you wouldn’t give to spend one more day. Your loved one has been gone – what? Weeks? Years? It seems like forever, and missing him doesn’t get much easier. You wish for one of her hugs. What you wouldn’t give to have one more day with her. And what would you do? In the new novel, “Recognition” by O.H. Bennett, a young mother panics because the man she sees can’t possibly be the man she knew. Franklin would have gone to Brenda’s house by now. That was one of the thoughts swirling in Dana’s head as she rushed home from an exceptionally long day of teaching. Nine-year-old Franklin knew he should go to the neighbor’s house when his mother was running this late. What he didn’t know was that Dana worried about bills, the house, her job, and a hundred other things. Mostly, she thought about her husband, Reynolds, who’d been accidentally swept away in a rain-swollen river just months before Franklin was born. For that, there was simply no closure. If only they hadn’t argued. If only she hadn’t been so self-conscious of their mixed-race marriage. If only. If only. If only she hadn’t slept with her colleague, Steve.

Houston Mayor On the Defense for HERO

ouston’s new equal rights ordinance (HERO) has been under scrutiny since its conception. Now that it has passed with votes from Houston City Council a new battle to have voters repeal it has been waged. It would take 17,269 signatures that have to be validated by the City Secretary to have HERO placed on the November ballot for voters to decide to

Recognition And that was the hundredand-first thing on Dana’s mind as she prepared to turn onto the street where she lived – and she saw him. Reynolds! Her husband, but when she stopped, turned around, and tried to find him, he was gone. Enlisting the help of an alcoholic streetwalker, Dana did everything she could to locate her beloved, the man she thought was dead, but he was elusive. Maybe he didn’t want to be found – but why? She couldn’t talk to his mother about it; Maureen was very ill. Dana couldn’t talk to Reynolds’ sister; she never liked Dana much at all. Surely, she couldn’t tell Franklin what was going on… Until the night Dana realized that she was being stalked. She needed to keep her son safe from someone – maybe Reynolds? It wasn’t his nature to play games – was it? And was that filthy, scruffy, homeless man truly Reynolds… or was Dana’s still-grieving mind playing tricks? It’s going to take you less than 210 pages to learn the answer. Two hundred squirmy, uncomfortable pages and you’ll enjoy every one of them because “Recognition” is just that kind of book. Tight-tight-tight is the story that author O.H. Bennett offers us,

with no chance to catch a breath or to figure out if his character, Dana, is remembering or re-living; Bennett tosses the story back and forth, then and now, so quietly that we’re never sure. That catch-you-offguard is an awesome hook that adds to the surrealism of this tale as Dana’s confusion becomes our confusion and everything oozes into a dream-like focus, then careens to an absolutely golden ending. My biggest advice is to be patient with this book. It’s a little odd at the very beginning, but you’ll warm to it quick. Ultimately, “Recognition” will be a novel you’ll want to spend one more day with.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Propels Us to Despise Prejudice

awn of the Planet of the Apes is the 50-year ape franchise’s latest film focused on teaching evolution lessons based on humans fascination with our fury cousins. With ever heart pounding sound and thrilling three dimensional cinema craft; this new film begins a decade following the last movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Now the lead character Caesar leads the evolving apes. In the earlier film (Planet of the Apes), Caesar was raised by a “good man” who taught him to trust humans. The other apes, now with him in his ape built nation, were raised in a San Francisco lab where they were poked, prodded and tortured by white coat wearing scientists pushed by bureaucrats that treated them inhumanely. After a “simian” fever epidemic killed off most of the people in Planet of the Apes, only a remnant of humans remained in the battle broken city convinced the apes caused their genocide. The humans thought the apes were gone. The apes, having not seen any humans for years, were convinced the humans were gone too. When humans encounter apes prejudice propels a reflex in some to shoot, which brings to the film the issue of banning guns in the ape world where guns represent man’s ability without reason to kill. The apes trust the men to work on their power generation with the caveat that no guns are brought into their world. When guns are discovered in the humans’ belongings, the war is declared. The film then takes a dive into the standoff in today’s society that we face in wondering if all guns are banned will the

world be safer or will those with ill intent continue no less. Caesar is accused of loving humans more than apes and some of his fellow apes begin to rebel against him. Caesar’s teenage son is confused because he sees some humans that want to help apes that are hurt and others that want only to hurt apes. Koba leads the rebellion against Caesar, finds a human armory and tells his fellow apes humans killed Caesar. In fact, a shot Caesar and his ill from having just given birth wife are being cared for by humans

that teach them that learning, trust and love can come from folks from any species, of any size and schooling. The movie features intense special effects, lighting and sensory shattering drama showing a San Francisco filled with devastation and northern California forests filled with breath taking serenity. The facial expressions of actors costumed in body suits to look like evolved apes are amazing as are the efforts to put the ape draped actors on horses in drama filled fight scenes. After all the excitement from the ever ear hurting loud sound effects and eye straining three dimensional cinematography there is one take away from the film. It is all humans should be judged not by the ills of a few and not all fury cousins should be crippled by curses from some.

Dr. J’s Rx ABC’s: Hypertension The Silent Killer

HEALTH By Dr. Jennifer Jackson

H

ypertension has been called by many names, but the main one I want to focus on is “The Silent Killer.” The Mayo Clinic shares “that you can have high blood pressure (hypertension) for years without any symptoms. Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.” Before going into this month’s Rx ABC’s, it is important to know the significance of what blood pressure is and how it can affect you when it is too high. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure. High blood pressure’s etiology can be categorized into essential (no clear cause) or secondary hypertension (caused by another medical condition). The Mayo Clinic further states that “high blood pressure typically develops over many years, and it affects nearly everyone eventually. Fortunately, high blood pressure can be easily detected. And once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it.” Most pharmacies or stores with pharmacies have blood pressure machines that are free to the public to use, example Wal-Mart, or sell blood pressure machines that are reasonably priced. I recommend to patients to purchase a blood pressure machine that has an adapter and fits comfortably around the arm. If the cuff is too tight, this could influence your blood

pressure reading. Be mindful that these are good resources to aid in monitoring your blood pressure, but the best source is monitoring facilitated by a health care provider. A- As we navigate from winter’s biting winds to spring showers, it is essential to be ALERT and AWARE of high blood pressure symptoms. Although some people have no signs or symptoms, there are those who may experience dull headaches, dizzy spells, and for some higher incidences of nose bleeds. B - Be BOLD in BREAKING the silence of this silent killer. Do not wait until your follow up visit to get your readings. Ask questions and be proactive in communicating questions, comments or concerns to your pharmacists and other health care providers.

Dr. Jennifer Jackson

C- Do not wait until the temperature is at its highest to begin to work on CONTROLLING your blood pressure. Make an investment and purchase a blood pressure monitor for home monitoring. Patients taking blood pressure medications can experience a number of symptoms in high temperatures and need to contact care providers (physicians, pharmacists, etc) with concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Jennifer O. Jackson with any questions at drjennifer.jackson@gmail.com.

POLITICAL Edwards Seeks Election to State

By Burt Levine, Political Writer

Republican Executive Committee

T Edwards was born at Third Ward’s Riverside Hospital and lived in Sunnyside before his parents moved to Galveston. After graduating from Ball High School he went on to join the US Army to serve as an intelligence sergeant. Motivated by Galveston’s tradition of being a hub of Texas African American history, Edwards is now on the brink of being elected to serve on the State Republican Executive Committee, which is the board that runs the Texas Republican Party. At the Republican Party of Texas State Convention last month, Edwards came in second to Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Daniel McCool, who died of a heart attack four days following the convention. Since then Edwards, a successful information technology small business owner and a respected husband, father and Island Church member, has been urged by elected officials all across Texas and Washington DC to put his name in to be appointed at the fall SREC meeting. “I served throughout the world 10 years in military intelligence and am an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I studied Latin American Studies at American University in our country’s capital of Washington DC and built Automatic IT Corporation and Havana Alley, as well as having served my county, city and community as a City of Galveston Building and Standards Commissioner and now as a Galveston Housing Authority Commissioner,” said Edwards, who is inspired he said by Norris Wright Cuney, who was a Galveston City Council member

Hulu Spotlights Latinos with East Los High

Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

W

e all know that this is the age of technology, but who really knew that television would venture into the Internet world. Over the past few years there has been huge growth in the ability to view shows and movies online in a safe manner. Hulu is one of the most popular websites streaming on-demand television shows and movies from many networks and studios as well as original content exclusive to their brand. Knowing the demand to see more Latinos in the entertainment industry, Hulu debuted ‘East Los High’ in mid 2013. Season 1 was a huge success and left fans wanting more. As season 2 of the web series gets started, Houston Style Magazine spoke two of ‘East Los High’ stars, Danielle Vega and Rene Alvardo, about the new season. Set in Los Angeles, CA, the show tells the trials and tribulations of a group of Latino teenagers that attend the fictional East Los High. Produced

and directed by Carlos Portuga the show combats stereotypes of Latinos and addresses issues that are prevalent in the Hispanic community. In the season 1 opener viewers saw that ‘East Los High’ is full of drama with themes of romance, sex, dance and mystery. Just as much as the show is entertaining, it teaches viewers about having morals and good character while showcasing East L.A. in a positive light. “We go through real issues, and we give you all the avenues that you could possibly take if you were in these situations. We deal with bullying; we deal with sex, sexuality, domestic violence - all of these different avenues that are present in today’s society,” said Vega. During season one we meet Vega’s character, Ceci, who has to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. Considering all her options including abortion and adoption, Ceci eventually decides to raise her baby girl, that she names

Isela. Ceci attempts to balance school, work, and raise her daughter but finds it all too challenging and drops out of high school, which is something all to real in today’s society. Ultimately, Ceci is fired from her job as a nanny. Season 2 picks up with Cecil returning to East Los High to do what she loves, dancing. Supporting her through all of this is her always caring and attentive boyfriend Pedro, played by Alvarado. Pedro was introduced in season 1 but viewers never really saw the development of the character. All that changes in season 2 with Pedro having a larger presence. “Pedro at first glance is really sweet and caring, and very supportive of Ceci and her daughter. I think people are really going to fall in love with him,” said Alvarado of his character who comes off as the ideal partner for Ceci. With a sly grin Alvarado hints at the fact that Pedro may not be what he seems. Alvarado added that Pedro will take a turn for the worst, but wouldn’t give any spoilers

as to how that would play out. It is easy to see that ‘East Los High’ is definitely not your typical teen drama. This show hits home for a lot of teens by tackling universal subjects that many teens face in today’s society. In addition, the show educates teens on what to do in certain situations and showcases the results of decisions made. Season 2 of ‘East Los High’, presented by Toyota Rav4, starring Vannessa Vasquez, Danielle Vega, Rick Mancia, Vivian Lamolli, Alexandra Rodriguez, Gabriel Chavarria, Chachi Gonzales, Andrea Sixtos, Alicia Marie Sixtos, Ray Diaz, Rene Alvarado, Ashley Campuzano, and Jeremy Chavarria premiered Wednesday, July 9, 2014 exclusively on Hulu. New episodes air weekly every Wednesday. For more information, visit hulu.com/east-loshigh and eastloshigh.com. Tiny Lister: Soaring with the Eagles

ENTERTAINMENT By Susie Stillwell, Entertainment

E

ven when he isn’t making a movie, Tiny Lister usually plays the bad guy. As a paid spokesperson for Monster Energy Drink, Lister works corporate events on weekends, and when he’s on the clock, he appears as Deebo, his signature character from the Friday franchise. “It’s that character,” he says of the neighborhood bully who first terrorized Ice Cube and Chris Tucker in the original 1995 comedy. “That’s what they pay to see.” At fifty-five years old, he juggernauts through any crowd gingerly, landing flat-footed with each step. He is unlike any movie star — 6-foot-5, 285 pounds with a bald, angular head and mammoth hands, a fearsome titan in a land of mini Ken dolls. Then there’s the eye. It’s not as cross-eyed as it appears on film. Lister’s right eye, in which he is blind, is cloudy and it droops. “Ay, ay, give it up for the pit crew,” Lister bellows. His voice is a guttural croak. Like Deebo, whenever he raises his voice, Lister sounds as if he’s just snacked on a few rusty nails. “Give it up,” he continues, “or I’m gonna choke you out, fool “Man, I’m tired,” he says off mic, revealing a toothy smile, the beads of sweat rolling down his brow. Playing the bad guy wasn’t always this easy — Lister says he received death threats when he wrestled as Zeus, a character he originated in the 1989 film No Holds Barred. But it came naturally. “He can go from that innocent look to absolute danger in a blink of an eye,” says Eric Roberts, Lister’s costar in four films. “When he looks angry, you feel

anger.” As a result of that skill, Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr. has carved out a weird, remarkable career — 30 years long this year, 176 acting credits in all, with work alongside icons like Marlon Bran-

blind with a detached and deformed retina, Lister was once ashamed of his right eye. He wore tinted glasses. Then one day he stopped hiding and took off the shades. “I started doing these movies and God said, ‘You thought it was a curse. It was a blessing,’” he says. “[My eye] became my trademark in Hollywood.” His other calling card: Lister is a gentle giant known for being the friendliest guy on set, a welcome collaborator. “He has such a good, positive spirit,” says Walter Hill, the director of 48 Hrs. and The Warriors, who gave Lister his big break, casting him in 1986’s Blue City and later directing him in Extreme Prejudice and Trespass. “This discovery that this big, strong fella is actually sweet and friendly just makes you like him and brings about a very positive. Lister subscribes to a worldview with room for concepts like divine paths and prophecies. He had loftier ambitions than a 9-to-5 after college, to the point of delusion. Despite never playing football growing up, Lister futilely tried out for the New Orleans Breakers of the United States Football League in 1984. And even with a discernible disability, he dreamed of protecting the president as a Secret Service agent. He never made it to the NFL, or to Washington. But Lister did make it to Hollywood. He first met Walter Hill at the Los Angeles nightclub Imperial Gardens, where he worked as a bouncer. Read the full story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

ou can turn any summer day into a special occasion with a cool ice cream treat. From classic favorites to innovative new flavors, it only takes a scoop or two to bring out plenty of smiles. For kids, summertime is about chilling out, and there’s no better way to enjoy this slowed down pace than with a refreshing, frosty treat. Ice Cream Cupcakes Yield: 18 to 20 cupcakes Cupcake liners 1 1/8 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 cup white sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup brewed coffee 1 container Blue Bunny Caramel Fudge Brownie Sundae, Vanilla or your favorite Blue Bunny flavor decorations (such as sprinkles, cupcake skewers, cherries) To make cupcakes, preheat oven to 350°F. Place cupcake liners in cupcake pan. Sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Set aside. In medium bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and beat well. Add flour mixture, alternating with coffee. Beat until just incorporated. Fill cupcake liners about 1/3 full to allow for

ice cream. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cupcakes cool. Using round ice cream scoop, scoop out rounds of ice cream and set on baking sheet in freezer. Once ice cream scoops are frozen, carefully place one into each cupcake and top with fun decorations. Note: Though the recipe calls for brewed coffee, the cupcakes won’t take on its strong flavor. Layer Up with a Topping Station A topping station is the perfect activity for birthday parties or other kid-oriented summer celebrations. Just make sure the station is easily accessible — at their level — and place each topping in its own special bowl or serving dish along with a spoon. Also, be sure to label each topping in case anyone has a food allergy, especially when serving nuts and fruits. The little ones will have a blast mixing different tastes for the perfect sweet combination. Here are some tasty topping ideas to take your ice cream topping bar to a whole new level: Mini chocolate chips Gummy bears Chocolate candies Strawberry slices Pineapple chunks Banana chunks Chopped pecans, peanuts or almonds Crushed cookies Crushed mint candies

HEALH ALERT Protect Yourself Against

Chikungunya

fficials at the Texas Department of State Health Services have confirmed Texas’ first human case of chikungunya. More common in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the chikungunya virus was first found in the Americas on the Caribbean islands in 2013. It was while visiting the Caribbean islands that a man, who lives just outside of Austin, was infected. He brought the virus to Texas when he returned home. It is important to note that chikungunya is not contagious. Infected persons will just have to wait it out the symptoms that last about a week before they began to feel better. Infected persons usual experience high fever, severe joint pain, muscle aches, headaches and rashes. A few people have developed long term joint pain but those cases are rare. Chikungunya is not transmitted through person-to-person contact but through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. Officials have said this type of mosquito is most active during the day. Research indicates that it is those who travel to places such as the Caribbean and the Pacific are the ones who are importing the virus in new areas of the US, as in the case of the Texas resident. Although there is no vaccine or medicine to treat chikungunya, there are ways travelers can protect themselves against it. Always use an approved insect repellent each time you go outside. Drain standing water so mosquitoes cannot breed. Wear long sleeves and pants when outside. Use air condi-

tioning or make sure doors and windows are screened to keep mosquitoes outside. For more information, visit cdc.gov/chikungunya.

n Wednesday, July 2, 2014, Houston Style Magazine was on hand at Lucy’s Ethiopian O Restaurant and Lounge for the Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony. Not your ordinary cup of coffee, Ethiopian coffee is something that is a celebration of the human spirit. Susani Grant,

Lucy’s owner, makes the special coffee in 1 1/2 hours using the same process that is used in Ethiopia. Beginning by roasting organic coffee beans from the mountains of Ethiopia, the beans are then grinded and boiled in clay pots before the first cup is poured. The process is a treat for your nose and eyes. Some sharing in this honored tradition were Susani Grant, Ayda Grant, and Carlecia D. Wright.

UK Switches from Paper to Plastic for Currency

I

n an attempt to be one step ahead of illegal money printers and other financial crooks the UK is making a major change with their money. The UK will no longer print £5 and £10 bills but instead will use polymer bank notes printed by the Bank of England by 2016. This change will save the UK money, as the bank notes are cheaper to print and protect citizens’ money, as the bank notes are harder to forge. Notes are also more durable since they are made from plastic. Australia and Canada have already made the transition to bank notes. For more information, visit bankofengland.com.
