“
It is more dangerous to be black in America. You’re substantially more likely to be in a situation where police don’t respect you.” The speaker was not Barack Obama; it was former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Even a conservative firebrand like Gingrich was shaken by videos showing black men killed by police in Baton Rouge and suburban St. Paul. Then the lone assassin in Dallas shot and killed five police officers and wounded seven more. Grief, fear and anger spread. The challenge now -- for every concerned American -- is how we react to the injustice and the violence. We know that our justice system suffers from massive and systematic racism. It is more dangerous to drive while black. African-Americans are more likely to be stopped, more likely to be searched, more likely to be arrested if stopped,
POLITICAL
After the Horror, We Must Build One America more likely to be charged if arrested, and more likely to be jailed if convicted. The budget of many small towns is based upon the fines, penalties and fees paid for by largely African-American offenders. Police, states attorneys and judges tend to have a shared perspective, an organizational kinship. How do we respond? After the shootings of Philando Castile in Minneapolis and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La. -- as after Ferguson, Mo. and Baltimore and more -- nonviolent demonstrations spread across the country. Whites joined with blacks and Latinos and Asian-Americans to call for an end to the killings, for justice, for the recognition that Black Lives Matter. These are the tactics taught by Jesus, Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, not because they were scared of violence but because they were wise about change. Nonviolence condemns the sin, but not the sinner. It indicts the injustice by forcing recognition of our shared humanity. It summons the better angels of our character, not the bitter angers of our fears. We must choose reconciliation over retaliation and revenge. This is a teachable moment if we are finally willing to learn that too many guns, too much injustice and growing disparities is a lethal cocktail. It is unfair to associate this terrorist attack with our long struggle for peace and justice for all. This crime has endangered those who would protest nonviolently against injustice. It roused
fears and spread hatred. The reactionary will use his crimes to try to discredit the reform movement. Police across the country will be even more on guard. Violence isn’t an answer; it is sabotage. America is scarred by what has become routine violence. There is good news. The murder rate is dropping. The number of police killed in the line of duty is lower in recent years than it in earlier decades. But according to the tally of the Washington Post, 509 people have been shot by police to date in 2016, a pace similar to last year’s. And gun violence continues to take a grisly toll. The cameras that now are everywhere have begun to expose to America the reality that people of color have known all too well. Now people of good conscience must come together and demand change. This will take multiracial coalitions, electoral mobilization and peaceful protest. But the camera’s eye shows us only a glimpse of the symptoms; it does not reveal the roots of the disease. The camera lens can reveal the police abuse, breaking the curtain of silence. But it does not show the roots of the problem. The reality is that there are still two Americas. We’ve overcome legal racial segregation but we haven’t overcome legal resource segregation in schools, jobs, contracts, investments, access to capital, technology and deal flow. Poor African-Americans and Latinos are more likely to be crowded into impoverished neighborhoods, marked by drugs and guns, by

This is specifically highlighted when looking at the Houston Police Department, which

violent streets and broken schools, unemployment and crushed hopes. Police are tasked to keep order amid the despair. It is an impossible job. Yes, we need justice when police officers brutalize the innocent. We need more training, more cameras, more community relations, and new community forms of policing. We need to end the racial disparities in arrests, searches, sentencing and more. But the police will still be in an impossible position unless we get serious about making this one America, in redressing the lack of jobs, the broken schools, the shortage of affordable housing, the lack of health care and drug treatment, the shortage of parks and recreational facilities. That is why we need a White House conference on the two Americas, on racial disparity, poverty and reconstruction. We need a plan for jobs, for rebuilding our impoverished neighborhoods, for replacing guns with books and drugs with hope. Without that, the camera lens will continue to reveal that the horrors and the crimes are continuing, and the spiral of hate and fear deepening. You can write to the Rev. now is noted for its long standing relationships that weave into the city’s every race, religeon and region. McClelland made a point to provide detailed data on more than one million incidents from 2010 to 2015, by far the most extensive trove of information provided for such research. They found confirmation this week by the National Bureau of Economic Research in Houston, black and Hispanic people were significantly less likely

to be the targets of shootings in situations where officers’ lives or safety were threatened. “ B e f o r e a department can change, you have to have your data objectively analyzed,” said McClelland, who stepped down earlier this year. “I wasn’t afraid of what the answer would be. Whether good or bad, I needed to know the answers.” The study finds no racial disparities in HPD shootings, he
said. Tu r n e r, M c C l e l l a n d a n d his successor Interim Chief Martha Montalvo, the first Hispanic and second woman police chief in Houston following four black male chiefs, maintains Houston is different and stands out from the nation’s 18,000 independent police departments. Montalvo said HPD is prepared and is pro-active to work with people

from every persuasion. “People come up and tell us if there are issues. That speaks to the relationship that these officers have with the people,” Montalvo said. McClelland cited Houston’s conscious effort to educate officers about diverse cultures and train them to de-escalate conflicts. HPD investigates officers if they receive multiple complaints, he said. HPD is also among the most diverse in the nation, with black, Hispanic, and Asian officers making up nearly half the force, local criminal justice specialists added. The study was authored by Roland Fryer, a Harvard professor, who last year was recognized by the American Economic Association as among the nation’s top economists. The study found in situations police fired their weapon, blacks were no more likely to be targeted than whites. Keep in the know on Houston and everything political with Burt Levine. BOOK REVIEW
Smart Mom Rich Mom
ack-to-school time is almost here, which means back-to-school bills. Your first-grader needs all-new everything. Your third-grader needs a certain kind of crayon. Middle-school requires three different notebooks, and everybody wants new clothes. You’re not sure how that’s going to happen this year, but with “Smart Mom Rich Mom” by Kimberly Palmer, you’ll learn how being financially savvy can help your future. Some years ago, when two editors of “a prestigious investing magazine” told money expert Kimberly Palmer that women didn’t read financial publications, she was taken aback. Women, she says, and “moms especially,” make the majority of today’s consumer purchases. Within the coming years, we’ll “control two-thirds of the country’s wealth…” You’re pretty wise, financially, but can you better harness that power? Your first thought might be couponing. That’s fine, Palmer says, but it’s not all. Don’t forget to take advantage of bigger financial boons, like signing up for flex accounts at work or putting money toward better-yield savings. Make goals, figure out how to set aside funds for long-term and short-term needs, and get to know your “beautiful old lady” self. “That lady is going to need some money” in coming years, which might mean “extra sacrifices today.” But, by the way, there’s no need to be Draconian; just be smart about little splurges. Remember that kids cost money – more in the beginning, less later on – and babies don’t care about designer clothing. As your children grow, teach them simple but valuable lessons by giving them an allowance and insisting they save some of it. Show
them by example that happily-delayed gratification is possible. Ask your employer if you can take advantage of flex-time. Know if opting out of work altogether is right for you, or if entrepreneurship is better. Educate yourself on investing by reading everything you can find on the subject. Don’t let your husband or partner take over financial reins completely; be aware of what’s going on with your accounts. Talk to your parents about house-sharing. And above all, consider your kids: their financial security may someday depend solely on you. No doubt about it: there’s a lot to take away from reading “Smart Mom Rich Mom.” Each page, it seems, is packed with useable, reliable information and good advice. That is, as long as you have a well-paying job in place. If you don’t, author Kimberly Palmer doesn’t seem to have much to offer except that you need to “make slow and steady progress out of the troubles” you have, which isn’t very helpful. Yes, you can learn how to manage money and cut costs with this book but if you don’t have much money to begin with, you’ll have to patch something together from what you’ll learn here. Sigh. Admittedly, that might be frustrating and though this book could still help, I think I’d have been happier with it, had it been more inclusive. Still, if you need a boost, an idea, or a fresh financial outlook, “Smart Mom Rich Mom” is a start for a good education. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

1. Pack for Fitness Before your trip, research the hotel, nearby fitness facilities or area parks and pack accordingly. Be sure to bring along the essentials, such as athletic shoes and exercise clothing; easily portable equipment such as a jump rope, resistance bands or yoga mat; and technology to support your workout like your smartphone and headphones. Like the right apparel, footwear and diet, it is also important to have the right contact lens technology for your eyes. It’s crucial to your performance that you be comfortable throughout the day so you don’t lose focus. “As a fitness trainer, fashion designer and social media entrepreneur, I need a contact lens that’s as high-performing as I am,” Ho said. “Because of their unique water-gradient technology, Alcon DAILIES

2. Keep Active as You Go Whether you’re traveling by car, train or plane, summer travel can force you to sit for long periods. To fit some activity into your travel, wear your walking or running shoes. If you’re traveling by plane, stroll through the airport terminal rather than sitting at the gate if you have a layover or delay. When traveling by train walk through the cars occasionally. If you’re driving, take breaks to get out and stretch. 3. Work in a Workout When you arrive at your destination, set the tone for your trip by working out right away or scheduling time for a workout and treating it as an important appointment. Consider these simple ways to squeeze in some physical activity: • Go for a quick run in the area near your hotel – it’s a great way to burn calories, and it’s the perfect opportunity to explore your destination! • Walk the hotel halls – or get your daily steps logged at a local attraction or meeting facility. Take the stairs when possible and use your phone’s

GPS to map out a path or find a local park or trail. For a quick burst of cardio, power through a few sets of jumping jacks in your room. If you’ve got space in your hotel room, use your tablet or smartphone to find a yoga or aerobics workout and follow along. Try pushups, planks and squats, all of which rely on your own body mass for resistance. Swim laps in the hotel pool.
4. Make Healthy Dining Choices When dining out, make sensible choices. Take the time to evaluate the menu. Select foods that are steamed, roasted or broiled, and avoid fried foods. Ask for dressings and sauces on the side. If you’ll be in town for more than a day or two, take time to visit a local grocery store to stock up on fresh, healthy snacks, such as fruit, vegetables, hummus and unsalted nuts, for your hotel room. Keeping things simple and staying committed to your routine with these tips will help you to easily keep your health on track during your summer travels. COMMENTARY By Dr.
Lovell A. Jones
I
often use this column to write about the value of a human life. How it exist on a sliding scale, depending on who you are, with the oppressed at the bottom and oppressor at the top. That it is always difficult for the oppressor to realize their role and responsibility what we are facing today and an equal role in correcting the situation. Unfortunately, when such a suggestion is made, it is generally confronted with a defensive response from the common person on the street to those at the highest levels of our nation. And therefore, any real discussion regarding solution are lost in the discourse that take place. It is often state that this is a thing of the past, and then they cite the words of Martin Luther King. You know, judging a person by their character and not by the color of their skin. What they often fail to realize is that to get to that point that is that nagging need to address the lack of valuing all human life equally. For you can judge a person by the content of their character when you have already judged them by the color of their skin, or in some case, their social economic status. There is a feeling of hopelessness in the African American community, probably more now than it has ever been. Why in the 21st century are African American mothers having to give their African American sons, almost the same talk as given in slavery. That talk that started with being able to do nothing, while watching their women raped to now feeling that you are not able to do any regarding the feeling and perception of being killed by police; those that are there to protect you. Has anyone given any thought about the impact of given that talk, one think of police as protectors.. I said perception in some case. But also let me stress that whether real or not, perception is real to the person who perceive it. And unless you are open to listening and addressing the perception, there is nothing you can do to address the problem, and the problem will continue to get worst. What I am hearing is blame the victim dialog. Why aren’t you addressing the killings in Chicago? That is the real problem, Black on Black crime. This is a legitimate question. But it does not negate the reality of what is taking place with regard police – African American male interactions. What also cloud the discussion is that we have been able to get those who are part of the oppressed to take on the role of attackers. They provide a cover for a lack of real discussion. I am not saying that they should not have their opinions, but stop provide cover for real dialog. Stop saying that if only they acted in a certain way, they would be alive. Well, with regard to one individual, Philando Castillo, all the information is not in yet, but it is obvious that this man was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And before you say that I am jumping to conclusions without all the facts, well he is dead and that can’t be disputed. We have one group saying that he must have done something wrong and the other side saying that he was just killed
8
Lovell’s Food For Thought – Will We Ever Value Human Life on an Equal Playing Field? for no reason at all. And then there are those who are saying he should have realized that he was a black male being approached by a white policeman, and should have acted accordingly. If he had, or if Alton Shelton had, both of them would be alive today. Let me propose this question to those in America who consider self identify as White. This is something that was proposed by Jane Elliot to a room full of whites. How would you have reacted to the question proposed - “I want every white person in this room who would be happy to be treated as this society, in general, treats our Black citizens to please stand. You did not understand the question. If you White folks want to be treated the way Black are stand. Nobody is standing here. That says very plainly that you know what’s happening. You know that you don’t want it for you. I want to know why you are so willing to accept it or to allow it to happen to others? ” (https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=4yrg7vV4a5o) - This is a question that every White American should ask themselves. It is a discussion they should have among themselves. It is not that we don’t have solutions to solve the issue of race in this nation, and therefore removing the reasons for all of the demonstrations we are having. The problems is that we don’t have the will. It is evident that we are willing to have what is happening to African American males and not ask the question about being willing to accept the same treatment. If we are really honest about the answer to this question, we might be willing to truly do something about the issue. President Johnson over 50 years ago thought about a massive investment in employment, education, and housing based on the Kerner Report. It was a recommendation that he was told would never move through Congress. It was an issue of value. Here is that word again. For he was told that White middle-class voters (whites) would determine the next election, and if he took that path, well it would be better to take a “law and order approach” with “goodie” for the ghetto. The same Kerner Report explained that “Negroes firmly believe that police brutality and harassment occur repeatedly in Negro neighborhoods.” The report stressed that law-enforcement officers were not “merely a spark factor” to the riots that occurred but that they had come to symbolize “white power, white racism, and white oppression.” Does this sound hauntingly familiar, except the term now is Black or African American? Winston Churchill once said, “When the situation was manageable it was neglected, and now that it is thoroughly out of hand we apply too late the remedies which then might have effected a cure. There is nothing new in the story. It is as old as the sibylline books. It falls into that long, dismal catalogue of the fruitlessness of experience and the confirmed unteachability of mankind. Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when action would be simple and effective,
July 14 - July 20, 2016
lack of clear thinking, confusion of counsel until the emergency comes, until self-preservation strikes its jarring gong–these are the features which constitute the endless repetition of history.” Think about this in terms of the shooting of the police officers in Dallas. Have we reached a point where thing which were manageable are completely out of hand? I hope not, but time is truly not on our side The Kerner Report went on to state that “segregation and poverty have created a destructive environment totally unknown to most white Americans. It is what White Americans have never fully understood and what the Negro never forget. What we have is a White American Society that fails to realize its deep implicated in what is taking place. It is something that White America rejected, and continues to reject today. So are we doomed because we continue to fail to learn from our history? As someone who has been on the front lines for more than half a century and someone who got into this because he wanted to change the face of cancer, I see America at a crossroad. Where we go from here is going to be determined by White America realizing their future is tied to the hip of African Americans. We have to realize that neither side can solve this by talking over each other and pointing fingers of guilt at each other. Unfortunately, Listening to the talking heads on cable network news.
www.StyleMagazine.com
I am afraid that no one is listening and are just reacting to a fear or lost of control, especially where white males are concern. All you need to do is listen to how they handle the interviews and the lead in questions? Each brings on panelists who are more likely to support their position and not have an open and honest dialog. What about fusing Fox and CNN into one network? Then you might have honest and balance reporting. Just a thought. So as we continue to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, we all continue to lose lives on both sides. The great experiment in brings all cultures together, America, slides away in the sunset. It has been less than 100 years since we began the path to judging someone by his or her character. We can’t change the human value system overnight, but we can begin to have an open and honest dialog of how we got here and what we need to do to change. We can start with asking ourselves this question, how can you judge someone by their character when you have already judge them by the color of their skin? And then again, why do you accept this for others, when you would not accept this for yourself, your children or family? Share this story online at visit www.stylemagazine.com.

State Representative Borris Miles for Texas State Senate
By Dallas S. Jones, Special to Style
I
n the past few years, Democrats have lost some of their strongest members in the Senate – first Wendy Davis and then, more recently, Houston’s Sen. Rodney Ellis, who was chosen to be the nominee for Harris County Commissioner for Precinct 1 after the sudden passing of Commissioner El Franco Lee. Republicans control our state government, and nowhere is this more evident that the Texas Senate. The Senate is led by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a former conservative talk radio host and likely the most right-wing public official this state has ever seen. However, with the departure of Ellis, Democrats in Senate District 13 have the opportunity to replace him with a candidate with a proven record as someone who will effectively and aggressively represent the district and Democratic principles. Someone who will be a warrior for Democrats – fighting Republican leadership and standing for Democratic values. Rep. Borris Miles wants to serve as that warrior for the people of Senate District 13. Miles grew up in the heart of District 13 – Sunnyside, a neighborhood he now represents in the House of Representatives. He graduated from the legendary Jack Yates High School and earned a degree in Criminal Justice and Criminal Science at Sam Houston State University. After a career as a law enforcement officer, Miles opened his own insurance agency. He grew that agency to become the third largest black-owned independent insurance agency in the nation – the largest in Texas. He’s always returned that success to the community – funding scholarships, distributing meals on Thanksgiving and organizing Hip Hop 4 HIV, an event that raised awareness of HIV and helped over 5000 young people get tested. In 2006, Miles decided to take his public service to the next level. He ran for the Texas House of Representatives’ District 146, a district that currently stretches from the Sunnyside area west to Westbury and Meyerland. The incumbent had long been entrenched and was too close to infamous Republican Speaker Tom Craddick. Miles defeated him in a runoff. In the Legislature, Miles gained a reputation as a workhorse – an aggressive advocate for his district and for Democratic principles. In just the last legislative session, some of his accomplishments included: • Ending Police Brutality: Representative Miles fought for more police transparency by creating a civilian review board as an independent method of police oversight, requiring police departments to retain all complaints filed against police officers indefinitely and making those complaint subject to the open records laws. • Fighting Illegal Dumping: Representative Miles witnessed how illegal dumping was plaguing low income neighborhoods in Houston. He authored and passed House Bill 274, which doubled fines for illegal dumping. • Giving a Second Chance: Representative Miles passed House Bill 263, allowing certain juvenile records to be automatically sealed. He also passed four amendments to the state budget improving re-entry

programs, including securing nearly $800,000 for a program that teaches prisoners to be entrepreneurs. • Increasing Access to Health Care: Representative Miles passed a budget amendment securing half a million dollars to increase testing for HIV and STDS, a health crisis in poor neighborhoods of Houston. He also fought against HB 2, a law designed to prevent women from accessing abortions. The law was recently overturned by the Supreme Court. • Ending Food Deserts: Lack of access to fresh produce leads to poor nutrition and disease like diabetes in neighborhoods Representative Miles represents. To increase access, he authored and passed House Bill 262, which makes it easier for people to create community gardens. • Reducing the Halfway Houses - There has been an increase of halfway houses in our community.

www.StyleMagazine.com
Last session Rep. Miles passed legislation that effectively put a halt to the introduction of new halfway houses & mandated that a study be completed on the impact halfway houses have on our community & its citizens. Over the past year I worked with Mator Turner, City of Houston & TDCJ to ensure that our communities be protected from halfway house bombardment. His work in the Legislature has earned Miles the endorsement of Mayor Sylvester Turner, once Miles’ colleague in the House. “Believe me, it’s tough getting things done as a Democrat in a Republican-controlled legislature. But that’s exactly what our communities deserve,” wrote Mayor Turner. “I’m for Borris because Borris is a warrior for the people.” As a member of the Texas Senate, Miles will represent about five times as many people. But the people of Senate District 13 will all benefit from Miles carrying on the work he has done for House District 146. As a Senator, Miles will prioritize: • Funding all our schools at the levels our kids deserve; • A criminal justice system where everyone gets a fair shake; • Protecting the right to vote and ensure all communities have fair representation; and • Lowering higher education costs so more have access to opportunity. “The people of District 13 deserve a Senator who will put their needs first, and who will go up to Austin and fight for them every day,” Miles said. “I’m not doing this for the prestige of being a senator. I’m doing this because I know I can best serve the people of District 13 and Democrats as a whole as their warrior in the Texas Senate.” Miles is competing against State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, Former City Controller Ronald Green, and James Joseph. While Rep. Thompson has served 42 years in the Texas House of Representatives, we believe her years of service are best utilized in that body. In this very unstable time for our state it would be a tremendous blow to House Democrats to lose their most senior member who chairs one of their most powerful committees, Local and Consent Calendars. Miles has the legislative experience and work ethic to best represent Senate District 13, and we look forward to his service.

Wicked’s Talented Tale Bewitches Houston Audiences

tapping numbers as well. Noticeable musical favorites included song hits: Popular, Defying Gravity, No Good Deed, and For Good. Another reason to see this Wicked- would be the fabulous, costumes (envisioned by Susan Hilferty) and the incredible, imaginative set (designed by Eugene Lee) that comes to life with a fiery, mechanical dragon that sits on top of it’s glintering- green, englamoured stage. If perfectly pitched floating witches, dragons and scary flying monkeys aren’t enough to keep you on your toes, you will be swooning to the captivating song and dance performances of Wicked’s entire talented main ensemble. Run, run, run to Hobby Center and grab your ticket now. Wicked is the closest to Broadway you’ll get this summer. This phenomenal hit of a show, brilliantly Directed by Joe Mantello is the BEST I’ve seen in a very long time.
W
icked whisked it’s magic for Houston audiences opening night last week and it was the kind of production that brought everyone to their feet. Wicked- is a cleverly written, imperfect tale of good vs. evil and a story of friendship, envy, belonging and love. It’s also a tale that touches on the not so subtle themes of “Feminism” with its strong heroine characters and “Colorism”- as we watch Elphaba struggle with acceptance because she is the color green. What I enjoyed about the story of Wicked is that it is a true Universal story and within the magical, green world of OZ, there lies a defining character that truly resonates with everyone. While Wicked is based on the classical tale of the Wizard of OZ, it is really the untold story of the Witches of Oz and it’s story begins before Dorothy arrives. With Wicked you’ll discover how the Witches of the North and West became to be, their unlikely friendship and how they both ultimately thrived in world of OZ. The Synopsis: Two dubious friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (the Good Witch of the North), who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace and Galinda’s testament of love, lost, and loyalty. The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz; its plot begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz from Kansas. Stand out Performances were notably the Wicked’s main stars. Amanda Jane Cooper’s “Perfectly Blonde” (think Elle Woods) hilarious rendition of a goody two shoes Glinda was a hit and Emily Koch’s vulnerable, human portrayal of Elphaba as a misunderstood villain with heart. Both Cooper and Koch’s vocal range and soprano ability was simply outstanding and incredible to watch. The entire ensemble of Wicked was

exceptionally talented. Other notable performances and clear audience favorites were actors: Wendy Worthington as the truly wicked, headmistress “Madame Morrible” and Chad Jennings as the professing goat, “Doctor Dillamond”. Both actors’ performances - included the right amount of comedic timing and kept the audience laughing throughout the night. Five Things Protestors Need
n the past few weeks, violence, gun control, hate, and racism have been the highlight of American society. From the mass shooting at Pulse Night Club in Orlando to the recent deaths of Alton Sterling, Philandro Castro, and a few others, a potential civil war could be upon us. With hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter and #PrayForOrlando, the people are speaking up and they are taking it to the streets. Peaceful protest all over the nation is occurring everywhere by marches, sit-downs, vigils, and on-site discussions. We love the enthusiasm at Houston Style Magazine and the passion of the people to fight for what you believe in and we want to give you some tips that can help you prepare for whether protest you choose to participant. Here are five things protestors need.
merchandise is very simple and easy to put on and go that speaks volumes to what you are passion about. Less distracting than a sign, and clearer than a graphic. They say a picture has a thousand words, but sometimes we don’t need that many to get a point across. Some of my favorite typography pieces will be my one of my favorite artistic couples in Houston, Bria Davis and Morganne Nikole. Bria, the Founder of The People Project Houston and “The Brown As Fuck ” T-Shirt have taken storm in the Houston millennial realm as the young black generation find their voice and express who they are. Morganne, the creator of the newest hats, “Keep Going You MATTER”, in its small time of distribution has been promoting self-love and understanding and is now on the rise to something more. Typography Paraphernalia: With every protest comes a message, a statement, mission, an affirmation, a demand that speaks change, and what better way than a t-shirt or hat to spread your peace. Typography
Stay Hydrated: Very selfexplanatory, but I know it can slip the mind especially in the heat of confusion when trying to wrap your mind around all that has happened lately. Trust me, we get it. This is what we are here for. Remember to bring at least two water bottles or canteens when coming to protest. It is still summer time and you will be out for more than an hour, so take care of yourself and watered up. Dehydration is no joke.
Comfortable Footwear: This mainly pertains to the protestors who are participating in Marches, but having comfortable footwear will be very beneficial especially when traveling for a long distance. This can be helpful to keep your feet pain free and also able to move in tough situations. Pack It Up: A bag is always a great essential to have when traveling or going to be standing for a longtime frame. Whether big or small bringing having a sack to carry your belongings will be awesome, especially if you are utilizing your hands and won’t be able to carry your items. It’s the best way to carry those two bottles of water, a snack, extra pair of shoes, or supplies needed for the protest. Calm Mind: Although not tangible, keeping a leveled head at all times will guide you to speak or act in positivity, kindness, and love. It also allows you to stay aware of your surroundings at if a tough situation occurs. Hopefully these 5 essentials can give you a general idea of what you need when going to protest. Be safe and protest peacefully.

Beat the Heat and Stay Hydrated this Summer Why Milk is a Great Hydration Option Courtesy of Family Features
I
t’s summertime, which means it’s time to get out and enjoy the sunshine. But be warned, with the sun comes the heat. Whether you’re enjoying the park with your family or exercising outdoors, it’s important to stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. Staying properly hydrated can keep the heat from ruining your outdoor fun. Dehydration can be a serious bummer. Luckily, it’s easily preventable, and you don’t have to stick to just water. You may be surprised to learn that both white milk and chocolate milk are great hydration options, too. Lowfat chocolate milk has the right carb-to-protein ratio to help recover after a tough outdoor (or indoor) workout. Plus, fat free milk and full fat milk rank higher for hydration than other beverages like water and sports drinks, according to a study. Both types of milk improved hydration status and kept study participants hydrated longer compared to other beverages, which researchers attributed to the electrolytes sodium and potassium – both naturally found in milk.1
Here are three simple tips to stay hydrated all summer long: 1. Watch your thirst: this is usually the first sign of dehydration. Sip on a variety of hydrating beverages throughout the day, instead of waiting until you’re thirsty. 2. If you’re a parent, keep an eye on the intensity of your kids’ activities and always have hydrating drinks on hand. Grabbing a cup of cold milk on the way to the park is a great on-the-go option. 3. Begin your day by pairing a glass of milk with your breakfast. Not only does milk help you stay hydrated, you’ll enjoy other benefits like nine essential nutrients including 8 grams of high-quality, natural protein in every 8-ounce glass. Staying properly hydrated doesn’t have to be difficult. Try this Super Food Smoothie for a refreshing and delicious way to hydrate. For more information and recipe ideas, visit milklife.com. Serena Williams Wins Wimbledon for Historic 22nd Grand Slam Title
By Ravi Ubha, CNN
Williams
T
his time, Serena Williams wouldn’t be denied. Deprived of a record-tying 22nd grand slam title in the Australian Open and French Open finals this year, Williams got to No. 22 Saturday by defeating a dogged Angelique Kerber 7-5 6-3 in a high-quality Wimbledon final. It was the same Kerber who beat Williams in Melbourne in January but the world No. 1 turned the tables on the grass at the All England Club with a clinical display of power tennis amid windy conditions. “I have definitely had some sleepless nights with a lot of stuff, coming so close and feeling it and not being able to get there,” Williams, who was also foiled in her bid to achieve a calendar-year grand slam at last year’s U.S. Open, told reporters. “This tournament I came in with a different mindset. In Melbourne I thought I played well but Angelique played great, and better. So I knew going into this one I needed to be calm and be confident and play the tennis I’ve been playing for well over a decade.” She certainly did that. The 34-year-old struck 39 winners. Williams only faced one break point, at 3-3 in the second, and saved it with one of her 13 aces. “Of course it feels disappointing, that’s for sure,” Kerber, who finished with a respectable 12 winners and nine unforced errors, told reporters. “But also I know that I played a good final. “I lost against a really strong Serena today. This makes it a little bit better, that I know that she won the match, not that I lost the match, because she played very well.” Williams and Kerber’s fellow German Steffi Graf now tally 22 majors, the most in the Open Era of professional tennis. Talk now will surely center on the American attempting to get to Margaret Court’s 24 grand slams, the all-time record. Court was in attendance Saturday. Williams didn’t want to dwell on the next step up the ladder, especially since she endured struggles to win her 18th major -- tying Chris Evert and Martina
Navratilova -- and the 22nd. “One thing I learned about last year is to enjoy the moment,” said Williams. “I’m definitely going to enjoy this.” Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, sensed Williams was back to her best after they chatted on the phone following her loss to Garbine Muguruza at Roland Garros. “If I’m totally honest, I’m not relieved to have gotten the 22nd one,” Mouratoglou told reporters. “I’m relieved to have found back Serena. Everything depends on that. I don’t look at the reward. I look at how to achieve it and there was clearly something missing in the last eight months and the thing that was missing was Serena. “The tennis player was there but Serena as a person wasn’t really herself. So she was beatable. Not to say that she was unbeatable before, but she was much more beatable.” Williams’ reverse to Roberta Vinci in New York shook her to such an extent that, according to the Frenchman, she has only now truly steadied. “Because so many things were underlined, the calendar slam, the 22nd, the fact that it was in New York, all those things together, this hurt her much too much and the other losses were a consequence of this one,” said Mouratoglou. “We didn’t realize how much time she needed to recover from the (disappointment) of the loss at the U.S. Open. It took time. That’s what I feel.” Interestingly, Williams disagreed with Mouratoglou. “I don’t think it shook me,” she said. They’ll agree on liking Saturday’s result, which ensured that Williams’ older sister Venus remains the lone player to down Serena twice in grand slam finals. Venus -- a loser to Kerber in the semifinals -- sat in the player box along with Beyonce and Jay Z. Later Saturday she combined with her sibling to capture the women’s doubles crown. Great entertainment The first point of the women’s finale whetted
the appetite: After a lengthy exchange, Kerber struck a winning forehand. Superb entertainment ensued for fans on Centre Court and the millions watching around the world as Kerber attempted to neutralize Williams’ potent shots. Kerber saved three break points in her opening service game. She would often be scampering side to side in the match dealing with those Williams’ drives. Williams, a great mover like Kerber, took a slight tumble at 4-4 but was unhurt. At 5-5, 15-30, two unreturnable Williams serves got her out of trouble. Just when it looked like a tiebreak beckoned, Kerber, fatally, made two unforced errors at 5-6, 15all, both times in -- commendably -- attempting to hit aggressive shots to do some of the dictating herself from the baseline. On a second set point Williams forced an error to grab a crucial one-set lead: Williams has never lost a final at a major when winning the first. The fourth seed won what was arguably the point of the contest in the fourth game of the second when she crushed a backhand from well outside the doubles alley down the line. At 3-3, not only did Williams produce the ace on break point but she hit another ace to earn a game point. Seeing that rare chance dissipate, Kerber was broken in the next game and Williams held to love to close out the one hour, 21-minute affair. “Today when she’s in trouble at 15-30, boom, boom, this is Serena,” said Mouratoglou. “When she needs to lift her level to close it, this is Serena. I didn’t see that for eight months.” After authoring a winning volley on match point, Williams fell backward onto the grass. Williams and Kerber then exchanged a long hug to cap an enthralling battle. “I just said to her, ‘Congrats,’ and that she’s a champion,” said Kerber. Indeed. And not just any champion.

included a beefed-up suspension, heavy-duty air filter, descent control, and skid plates, along with various rear axle ratios, an integrated trailer brake controller, a power sunroof, and rear-seat Bluray/DVD entertainment. The 2016 GMC Sierra offers three engines: a 4.3-liter V6 that makes 285 horsepower and 305 lbft of torque, our tested trim offered a 5.3-liter V8 that makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft and a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. N o t s u r p r i s i n g l y, f u e l economy is best with the 4.3-liter V6. That engine returns 18 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway with 2-wheel drive or 17 mpg city/22 mpg hwy with 4-wheel drive. When you drive big you’ve got to go big or go home at the gas pump. The 5.3 Liter showed how it could dub as a guzzler in the gas department. Complementing the appealing new styling tweaks in the 2016 Sierra 1500 are 17-, 18-, and 20-inch steel or alloy wheels, power-adjustable and power-folding outside mirrors, and a “E-Z-lift” tailgate with side-steps. The interior is what will draw you in. To be a truck, the inside was extremely comfortable, appealing, and very spacious. Additional features includes cloth or leather upholstery, heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats, front bench or front bucket seats, full power accessories, cruise control, and either a tilt-only steering wheel in lower level versions or telescoping tilt-wheel steering in higher trims. Although the standard vehicle price is $47,270, our tested 2016 GMC Sierra 4WD Crew SLT had an M.S.R.P. of $56,695.00. Upper trims like the review vehicle we had also add a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, remote engine start,
2016 GMC Sierra
a power-sliding rear window, dual-zone automatic climate control, memory for driver’s settings, poweradjustable pedals, and a heated steering wheel. All trims starting with the SLE include 4G LTE hotspot capability (WiFi is always a plus) and Bluetoothintegrated OnStar telematics, all interfaced with an 8-inch touchscreen display. Safety features includes: standard 4-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), traction and stability control, front and rear side-mounted airbags, front and rear head-protection airbags, daytime running lights, a post-collision safety system, and OnStar emergency alerts and communications. All trims other than the Base include LED front fog/driving lights, while the SLT trim levels include a remote antitheft alarm. A newly upgraded Driver Alert package, including lanedeparture warnings, a forward collision alert, and a safety alert driver’s seat, is also a safety option for 2016. Although it may not offer everything that its competitors do, the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab SLT is a solid performer, and easily outdoes its competitors in terms of technology. In addition, it’s one of the best-looking trucks on the market, both inside and out. It is certainly one of the more solid options for anyone looking to buy a new pickup.
