n Friday, the Confederate battle flag came down on the South Carolina Statehouse grounds. This symbolic, long overdue gesture has significant meaning. The flag celebrated the sedition, slavery and secession of the Civil War. When Robert E. Lee surrendered, that flag was furled. It was raised over the statehouse in 1961 to celebrate segregation, suppression and states’ rights. Previous efforts to remove it failed. Former Gov. David Beasley called for it to come down, and probably lost his re-election as a result. Even after the triumph of the Civil Rights Movement, South Carolina burnished this symbol of racial division. This symbolic victory came in the wake of bloodshed: the murders of the Emanuel Nine, brutally slain while in church at a prayer meeting. It came because of the amazing grace of the relatives of the slain, offering

ith less than 110 days to Election Day, November 3rd, Houston city races are heating up with more fired up candidates fueled with more cash and fiery accusations than any before in Houston history. In this week’s required reporting the mayor candidates alone reported more than $7M in contributions. Early Voting begins October 19th and the final day to register to vote is October 3rd for the first open mayor and controller race in six years. Already 12 candidates are vying for mayor, five for controller and all at large city races feature at least three candidates. Close to 70 candidates are now running. The 2015 races are expected to be the most expensive in history. Seven seeking the city’s top job took center stage Tuesday at a northwest Houston faceoff featuring Chris Bell, Steve Costello, Adrian Garcia, Ben Hall, Bill King, Marty McVeigh and Sylvester Turner. Bell was the only candidate ready to rally with Mayor Annise Parker’s hope to repeal the city’s revenue caps. The engineer Costello and career law enforcement executive Garcia got hit with accusations for mismanagement in city roads and flooding, public works, public safety and public jails. Bell bragged as a Democrat he earned the Harris County Republican

Will the Crucifixion in Charleston Lead to a Resurrection? forgiveness to the hateful killer who shot the nine in cold blood. It came because of the leadership and courage of the governor, Nikki Haley, who stood up and spoke out in the wake of the horror, calling on the legislature to take the flag down. It came because of the pressure of the Chamber of Commerce and business leaders -- from Boeing, Volkswagen and others -- making it clear that they would find it difficult to invest in a South Carolina still intent on honoring this symbol of racial division. The question now is whether South Carolina can discard not just the symbol of the flag but also the substance of the flag’s agenda. Can the governor now grasp this moment to lead in resurrecting the South? Bringing down the flag has opened the way. The NCAA lifted its ban on post-season championship events in South Carolina, a decision that could produce millions in tourist revenue. New investments are likely to go forward now that the flag is down. Last month, Gov. Haley signed into law a bill requiring police to wear body cameras, putting the state in the national leadership on that issue. But much more needs to be done. South Carolina is one of the states that chose to reject the expansion
of Medicaid offered by Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, even though the federal government would pick up virtually all of the expense. It turned its back on $12 billion over the next five years, money that its hospitals and health system desperately needs. It deprived over 160,000 of its working people, more whites than blacks, from getting health insurance. Surely this is the time to reverse that decision. South Carolina has joined other Southern states in erecting voter ID laws designed to make voting more difficult, with disproportionate impact on the elderly, people of color and the poor. This too was discriminatory in effect and in intent. The more extreme North Carolina law is now being challenged in the Supreme Court. South Carolina could lead the South in reforming its laws to ease registration and voting rather than restricting it. South Carolina’s Republican representatives in Congress tend to support their party’s assault on public investment. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has just announced that it plans to go forward with a project to deepen the port at Charleston. South Carolina will benefit greatly if the ports at Charleston and Jasper are able to handle the larger modern container
ships. As the state benefits from federal investment in its ports, surely it is time for its representatives to push for greater public investment in infrastructure, and not continue to starve it. Gov. Haley could be the determining force. She has focused on jobs, driving an agenda designed to make South Carolina attractive to business. She has demonstrated leadership in regard to the flag. She’s announced her commitment to save South Carolina State University, a historically black college, appointing a new board to help dig it out of the hole it is in. She has earned the good will of the vast majority of South Carolina citizens and businesses. Now she can turn that authority to making South Carolina a leader of the new South. Party’s first Tough Tusk award and today is the only Democrat awarded for leading to cut taxes when the city was awash with cash in 2001. But today times are different and he’s calling for measures that could include tax raises. “If we’re a world class city we should act like it,” said Bell, the former city council member and former congress member who was the first to celebrate the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize gay marriage. As of June based on a poll by Houston Public Media KHOU, Bell polled third with eight percent. Bell is also last of the major candidates in fundraising with nearly $400,000 as of June 30. Costello was the night’s piñata. Hall hit him repeatedly for leading Rebuild Houston after the Supreme Court said it used misleading information on the ballot to pass it and not telling voters about its increase in taxes, fines and fees. Hall raised his voice to challenge Costello about his use of funds for flood fixes that went to

hike and bike trails, staff salaries and bureaucrat bonuses. “I built one of the city’s most successful engineering businesses ever,” said Costello, who is leading in fundraising with more than $1.8 million, including a $250,000 personal contribution and a $262,000 transfer from his city council account. Costello came in sixth in the poll with two percent. Throughout the night Garcia repeated how he led, managed and reformed the half a $1billion sheriff’s office but the drama of the night was Bell asking him questions about an inmate that was abused in solitary confinement and kept in his human waste for months at a time. Garcia was the only nonmillionaire on stage and last week announced $1.5 million in fundraising. He stands second in the poll with 12 percent. King, a former Kemah Mayor, attacked the status quo for a city raising more revenue than ever but unable to “pay the bills, catch crooks or fix the streets.” He boasted breaking the million-dollar threshold, having brought in about $1.25 million. Of that $750,000 came from donors with King donating the remaining $500,000 to his campaign. He now joins Hall in polling at three percent. Turner stood out listing his 27 years of success in the state house. He twice talked about how as a Democrat he did more in budget management with Republican leaders than anyone anywhere. He stands out with a campaign haul of $900,000 from his legislative account and an additional $750,000. With 16 percent polling, Turner is the frontrunner. Everyone else’s hope is to join him in a December run-off. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW

I Know How She Does It
by Laura Vanderkam
Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
he opportunity arrived on a silver platter. It was almost irresistible, in fact, but the truth is that you’re looking for a new plate because your old one is full. You have no time to take another project, no matter how wonderful it might be. That all could change, though, once you’ve read “I Know How She Does It” by Laura Vanderkam. So you say your schedule is jam-packed. Between the kids, your job, your spouse, the house, and other assorted obligations, you barely have time to take a shower. How do other, perhaps even busier, women do it? Vanderkam, who’s written other books on this theme, wondered, too. She began “seeking out time logs” from working mothers who made at least sixfigure incomes, and she studied how they spent their time. She calls it “The Mosaic Project,” and when she (and her participants) saw how they spent their days, it was eye-opening. People tend to overestimate how much they work, she says, and underestimate how much they sleep. She noticed that, when a week was accounted for and all non-work-related activity was removed, some full-time-working women with children actually put in just under 34 hours of work. Her findings showed that even the highest average workweek was under 50 hours, total. And there was adequate sleep. “If you work 46 hours per week and sleep 8 hours per night,” says Vanderkam, “that leaves 66 hours for other things.” To maximize that leftover time, there are strategies that she recommends. You may work odd hours but “be strategically seen.” Pop in to the office during regular work time,
or occasionally go out after work with colleagues. “Build in slack” so you’re not without breathing room in your schedule. Know “The Ten Secrets of Happier Parenting,” to enhance family time. Remember that eating a meal together as a family doesn’t necessarily mean dinner. Make date nights. Delegate chores and embrace the theme song from Frozen. Above all, remember: “There are no points for martyrdom.” Take care of yourself, and learn to use “pockets of time” to your advantage. Sounds familiar? It did to me, too, perhaps because there’s not much new inside “I Know How She Does It.” Indeed, author Laura Vanderkam herself wrote something quite similar five years ago. Even so, and as much as I enjoyed that book, there are quirks here that didn’t impress me. Readers, for one, will surely notice pages and pages of time logs from people they’ll likely never meet, which is interesting once or twice, but not any more than that. I also questioned the focus on high-income working mothers (just 4 percent of the population). This would have been a vastly different – and more approachable – book, had the author utilized a more widely-representative base of participants. Though this book is limited in its scope, I think readers who are seriously lacking time-management skills might get some help here. Most working mothers, however, have this covered. As for “I Know How She Does It,” they already do, too. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

KEM: From Addiction and Homelessness to 25 Years of Sobriety and Hope
FEATURE
By Gwen
B. Johnson, Feature Writer
KEM
W
hen many are legally celebrating their first drink, he was on the banks of the Detroit River trying to surrender from years of battling drugs and alcohol. Fast forward to 2015, as KEM—Motown superstar’s riveting 25 years of sobriety from addiction and homelessness is a profound and heartwarming beacon of hope worldwide. Known for unique vocal styling, KEM was born Kim Owens, July 23, 1969 in Nashville, Tennessee. Learning to play the piano as a toddler at his grandfather’s church, KEM became enamored with the instrument. “The piano was my refuge and solace, as it laid the foundation for my career today. I have been nurturing this relationship with the piano my whole life,” he affirms. Having moved to the Detroit, Michigan area around age five, the crooner realized the gift of songwriting when teacher Greg Smith asked him to reconstruct Motown songs, which ended in Smith praising his songwriting skills. The balladeer shared that the root of his lyrics stems from his desire for teen romance, but was girl shy. A surprising revelation, as given his alluring stage presence, but he explained his home life is different than performing for adoring fans. KEM is founder of Mack & Third Foundation that assists disadvantaged individuals during hardships. He adds one of the agencies that assisted him was the Detroit Rescue Mission, intersecting at Mack & Third Streets. His foundation hosts a community event and free concert where participants donate non-perishable and personal items to assist the destitute. “Mack and Third is about giving back to people who helped me,” he acclaims. In addition, the singer-songwriter-producer has the independent Kemistry label, started prior to first CD. As a celebrity, KEM lauds a good support system, as many of “Team KEM” started out with him. Today, life for KEM, 45, shines bright, however one of the catalysts to his spiraling was being sexually abused as a child in Nashville. As a teen, these experiences led him to seek solace in alcohol and drugs--his answer for everything and after high school, KEM was put out the house. He revealed he did not discuss the abuse incidents with his parents until adulthood and the neo-soul artist has made peace with the situation, “I do not have malice because they were
10
probably a part of something systemic.” KEM states he has done his inventory, worked toward healing and come through to the other side, as these incidents have shaped him to the person he is today. He remembers the trauma and degradation of being homeless, “Eating out of trash cans, in and out of jail, being hospitalized, I would not wish that life to anyone.” Alcohol was his main drug, but there was cocaine, acid and whatever he thought could get him to a better place. KEM recalls girlfriends attempting to help, but his apparent love was drugs and alcohol. He burned bridges with family but maintains he learned much, as this situation not only gave him freedom from addiction, but proclaims, gave him life. That day on the banks of the Detroit River was the end of his rope. He states, “I knew I had a problem and did not have a solution to fix what was going on with me. So I surrendered!” In recovery for over a year, he had to return to his music when released. He worked odd jobs to purchase studio time and reportedly was mailed an unsolicited credit card, which he used to finance his Kemistry project. Kemistry’s debut showed vulnerability, passion and vocal amazement, as was it evident he was singing for his life. Many resonated with the project and Motown executives signed KEM, then re-released the project in 2002 under their label-- And the rest, as they say is history! “Kemistry” went certified-Gold, featuring the #1 single “Love Calls.” KEM first heard “Love Calls” when riding with his dad. His dad did not want him to pursue music and that song helped to confirm to his dad that he was going to be OK -- or more amusingly, as Texans say, “he was the real-deal!” Since KEMISTRY, KEM he has climbed the charts, toured

globally and the Grammy-nominated artist recorded a certified-Platinum KEM Album II, featuring “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” Followed by certified-gold “INTIMACY,” “WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS” and in 2014, released “PROMISE TO LOVE” featuring chart-toppers, “Nobody” and “It’s You”. He assesses that love is inevitable, as love and spirituality are inseparable. “My career didn’t take off until I connected with my spirituality,” he declares. Which is why he connects spirituality with his music. He encourages aspiring artists to make sure music is your craft and to study, learn the business and be persistent. The Detroit-resident recently completed the Forever Charlie Tour, a 2015 industry-top tour, selling out Houston and nationwide, which headlined the legendary Charlie Wilson, along with fellow balladeer Joe Thomas. bout three weeks ago, I was contacted to make a 5-year-old dying boy’s final wish come true – an Avenger-themed Halloween party in July. I had little to no information about the boy, his family, or what he was dying of. I just knew that a child was about to die soon and I had to do everything in my power to make this event happen, immediately. Two years ago Billy Lee was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a form of brain cancer. After undergoing through the unimaginable – four surgeries and many rounds of chemotherapy, doctors informed his parents Chris and Kelen Lee that the cancer had become untreatable. Sadly, Billy only has about one to two months to live. His parents were told that with more chemotherapy, Billy’s life would be extended by an additional two months. “We could continue the chemotherapy for an extra two months, but what is the meaning? You get an extra two months if you need to stay in the hospital for three days?” Kelen Lee stated during an on air interview with Houston’s Channel 13 news. Instead, because of the generous donations to their GoFundMe page, the Lee’s have been able to take extended time off from work to enjoy every moment with their son Billy. Just recently, the Lee’s took Billy on a vacation to Disney World; however, there was still one last request from Billy and with the outpouring support from friends and strangers, his “Halloween in July’ became reality. After receiving the request, I placed a “help needed” type of advertisement on all of my social media channels asking for donors and volunteers to make Billy’s final wish come true. Immediately the outpouring of contributions came in – from friends, strangers, near and far and on Saturday, July 11, we all came together, transformed the leasing office at 6600 Memorial and
anxiously awaited Billy’s arrival. In complete Iron Man ensemble, Billy – escorted by his parents, arrived at his party ready to save the world with his Avenger friends in attendance. We ate, we played, laughed, and held back the tears at this amazing boy’s resilience. Thank you: Billy - for allowing me to be a part of your life if only for a brief moment. I promise to always remember your smile. or many, making better-foryou food decisions and staying physically active go hand in hand with maintaining a quality lifestyle. According to an article published by the Mayo Clinic, those who engage in regular physical activity enjoy the benefits of improved mood, more energy, better sleep and much more. For consumers who want to maintain healthy lifestyles, the NuVal® Nutritional Scoring System, which is found in grocery stores across the U.S., is easy to use for identifying summer snacks and meal items to energize fitness activities. “Consumers deserve to get the most nutritional bang for their buck,” says Mike Nugent, NuVal General Manager. “That’s why NuVal scores were developed — to support healthy lifestyles. The scores analyze the nutrition facts on food labels boiling them down to a single 1 to 100 score. With 100 being the most nutritious, higher scores mean better nutrition, allowing consumers to make at-a-glance nutrition comparisons as they shop.” Developed by a team of recognized experts, the scoring system was created as a direct response to America’s rapidly rising rates of obesity and diabetes in both the adult and child populations. Displayed directly on shelf price tags in the grocery store, scores are determined by an independent team of nutrition and medical experts who analyze more than 30 nutrition factors such as vitamin D, omega 3 fatty acids, saturated fat and calories. The experts do the research, so consumers can feel better about their food choices. The scores do not tell consumers what to

buy or eat; but simply reflect the overall nutritional quality of a food making it easy for consumers to compare nutrition as they do price. “No matter what their food plan, the scores guide people in shopping for anything from produce and dairy to snacks and packaged goods,” adds Nugent. “If you can count to 100, you can use the system to shop, cook, eat and feel better.” Step up to summer fitness While it’s important to be physically active all year, many people simply find themselves more active in summer — both because the outdoors beckons and there is more time for recreation. This creates an opportunity to fit in more daily physical activity, which generally means some potential to build lean muscle mass, lose excess body fat and get more fit. According to Dr. David Katz, M.D., M.P.H. — founding director of Yale University’s Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center and the principal inventor of the science behind NuVal scores — the more active you are, the more performance fuel your body needs. “The increased activity level of summer is a perfect time to think about trading up food choices, improving overall diet quality, and establishing a foundation for better overall health and vitality,” says Dr. Katz. For optimal fueling, Dr. Katz offers the following tips: Pick foods with dual duties. Some foods are ideal for meeting the needs of high quality nutrition, as well as concentrated fuel for an active

lifestyle. Some great food options include nuts, seeds and nut butters; fresh and dried fruits; beans and lentils; and whole grains. Protein sources are dairy (think non-fat Greek yogurt), eggs and lean meats. Embrace seasonal dishes. Summer is a great time for salads. Options are almost limitless. Consuming an abundance of vegetables is always a great place to start; but also consider a good protein source to provide the energy you need. Bean and lentil salads are a great fuel-up option. Know when to eat. Before exertion, avoid eating too much, so blood flows to working muscles rather than to digestion. Before workout, eating some fresh, seasonal fruit might be ideal. Post workout, replenish what exercise has burned with fruit, nuts, whole grains and a protein source. Snack small and often. Small portions of nuts and dried fruits, separately or together, make a great snack. Snack bars made from nuts and dried fruits — and little else — are a good option as well, and especially convenient when on the go. Be active at any age. If older and new to exercise, ease in and build up gradually. Walking, biking on relatively flat terrain, and swimming are excellent activities. All motion is good motion, so it is essential to find what you like. Dancing counts; so does yoga or anything else that has you up and going. Hydrate. As for hydration, water is generally best. Invest in a quality water container to have with you throughout the day — and during your workout. For more tips to feel your best and get the most out of those summer

Wells Fargo Releases Results of National Study on LGBT Community By Cecilia

hen it comes to marriage, having a financial plan in order is just as important as the actual wedding day, if not more. Though the Supreme Court’s recent decision to legalize gay marriage nationwide is undoubtedly a historic victory, it’s also left many navigating through largely uncharted territory. While marriage equality is now protected under federal law, other issues such as same-sex adoption, are still controlled by the state, making financial education even more important for millions of LGBT Americans. A new study completed by Wells Fargo & Company of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Americans reveals that financial security is just as important to them as it is to their heterosexual counterparts. Though love and commitment remains the primary reason cited for getting married, according to the survey, 86% of LGBT Americans also indicated that marriage-equality will improve the financial lives of same-sex couples, with 50% listing financial security and benefits as yet another reason for taking the plunge. “The decision to marry seems to bring with it a level of financial security for same-sex couples,” said Wells Fargo LGBT Segment Manager, John Lake. He added, “While LGBT Americans recognize that access to marriage provides certain financial benefits and obligations, there is still a significant knowledge gap around specific issues.” In an effort to deliver financial information and options to the community, Wells Fargo has emerged as a vital resource for LGBT couples that have recently gotten married or are planning to do so in the future. Through their Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor (ADPA) program, advisors have been trained to specifically target the unique needs and financial considerations of same-sex couples and domestic partners. According to Wells Fargo, “Financial advisors who earn this designation are well equipped to work with domestic partners and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) clients to develop a thoughtful approach to help identify and work toward their financial goals.” Despite being a niche specialization, it’s a field with the potential to assist millions in the long run and a market that Wells Fargo has targeted aggressively; resulting in the financial giant now holding 41% of all ADPA advisors within the nation. For Houston based ADPA and Life Underwriting Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) expert Shelley Nadel, the special designation allows her to offer a variety of full service planning options including risk management, insurance planning, investment services, creating living wills and more. “I would advise that you know and understand the laws and use professionals, perhaps even a CPA, when in doubt. Just because you get married doesn’t mean that your finances are in order and less than 1 in 5 get legal help,” said Nadel. Taking a common sense approach to the matter, Nadel advises having the tough conversations before taking the walk down the aisle; however, those already married can greatly benefit from the information as well. “Whether you’ve already gotten married or are still considering it, you need to know what your finances will be. What is your risk tolerance meaning what are you willing to handle? Will you merge your accounts and assets? Who’s going to work and will someone be staying home,” she explained. According to the survey there is also confusion as it pertains to the actual benefits of marriage, with 72% admitting that they don’t fully understand how legal marriage will affect things such as inheriting money from a spouse. Another 75% revealed that they are unsure how to access workplace pension benefits. Though a welcome step forward, in reality marriage-equality is just the tip of the iceberg for LGBT couples who will need to be aware of how individual state laws can affect financial planning. This holds particularly true in states like Texas, where family and PERFECT FOR divorce laws are all handled by FATHER’S DAY! the state. It’s a grey area that thankfully they don’t have to walk through alone. Ironically while only Plus get 23% of heterosexual couples 4 more have a financial advisor, in comparison nearly half of 2 (5 oz.) Filet Mignons Burgers LGBT Americans have already 2 (5 oz.) ENTERTAINMENT By Raegan
A. Bouttè, Entertainment Writer
Get to Know the Talented, Tony- Winning Broadway Star Tracee Beazer (HSM) What do you like best in this role and what has your experience been rehearsing with the cast? (TB) I absolutely love this cast! It’s a small cast and all the cast members are incredibly talented and a few of them I have even worked with before. What I love the most thing about this role is my character is the spunky one out of the show and it really has been a great experience getting to portray her. (HSM) Tracee tell us more about you. Where are you originally from? (TB) I’m originally from Connecticut, and I have been living in NYC for 15 years. I really have no formal training in theatre or music. There were no performing arts schools where I lived growing up. As for training, I received most of my training doing community theatre and with each and every show I continue to learn and grow. (HSM) What inspired your passion for being a Broadway singer and actor and who has been there supporting you from the beginning? (TB) I would say it has to be my mom. She enrolled me in dance at the age of three. When I started dance I didn’t even know what Broadway was, but my mom has been my biggest supporter. She was the one who drove me to all my auditions growing up.
Tracee Beazer
H
ouston Style Magazine caught up with the beautiful and talented Broadway star Tracee Beazer to learn more about her current featured role in TUTS production of “ Smokey Joe’s Café.” Beazer, a Connecticut native who currently lives in New York City, is a true rising star in the musical theatre community and has quite the repertoire on and off Broadway with hit shows: Hairspray, The Wedding Singer, Memphis, Honeymoon, and All Shook Up (Lorraine). Beazer talked to us about her background in dance and community theatre. She also revealed who her biggest supporter is and shared advice for aspiring young performers. Check out this great Q&A!
there is really no character plot. The show is a musical revue of really great music. My character is the savvy and witty one out of the cast. This is truly a show for all music fans. Expect to see a little bit of everything here and there is really something musically for everyone in this show. If you don’t like this show, then you don’t like music. There is classic Rock and Roll, R&B, Jazz and even Gospel. Expect to see over of 40 classic rock musical hits.
(HSM) I see you have quite the repertoire of hit shows! Can you share with me your proudest moment in your career so far? (TB) It was definitely joining the casts of Hairspray. I was 23 and it was my first Broadway show. I was only with the cast a week when we won the Tony so that alone was an incredible experience. And sharing that with so many talented and awesome people, it really felt like I was finally making it.
(HSM) Tell me a little about your character in the show and what should Houston audiences expect to see?
(HSM) Last but not least Tracee, two things: Tell us something about yourself we will be surprised to know! (TB) Well actually I am first-generation American in my family and we are from a tiny little island next to Antigua called Barbuda. Very few people have even heard of it. I went back 4 years ago and married my husband there and our ceremony was even apart of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority promotion. The people there were so overjoyed and welcoming and proud of what I have achieved. It was a moment where I felt proud of where I came from and what I accomplished.
(TB) Oh I love this question! My advice for any young performer is to really find yourself first! Find yourself outside of what you are doing in this industry. Know who you are and don’t let a role determine that for you. You have to value yourself and be strong in who you are. In this industry, you are criticized everyday and you can’t let that define you.
(TB) I auditioned for the show in NYC, and they called me back once then twice and I finally landed the role!
14
(TB) That is a very good question. I will be heading back to the grind in New York for more auditions. Right now I am currently working on an independent film currently “untitled” but I want to do more film work, but currently musical theatre is my forte.
(HSM) Any good advice for a young and upcoming performer interested in the theatre industry?
(HSM)First how did you even get involved with TUTS production of Smokey Joe’s Cafe?
(TB) Brenda originated the role I play;
(HSM) So what is next for you after Smoky Joe’s café?
Well, that about wraps us up, Tracee. So, thank you for your time. It was an honor and I can’t wait to see you and the entire musical ensemble this week at Miller Outdoor Theatre! It has

Fire Up the Grill with Barbecue Meatball Skewers
By Family Features
T
here’s nothing better than firing up the gr ill and gathering in the backyard with family and friends. While everyone expects to see burgers, dogs and steaks, you can show your guests you’re a true barbecue master by serving up smoky, grilled appetizers fresh off the grill. Try a new fan favorite of the season – Barbecue Meatball Skewers with Mozzarella— courtesy of Chris Lilly, world champion pitmaster. This recipe for deliciously gooey grilled meatball skewers is a tasty way to kick the party off right. The key is a little trick all pitmasters know: the twozone fire. Simply put, the twozone fire splits the grill in half. Pile hot charcoal on one half for direct, high-heat cooking and searing, while leaving the other side free of charcoal for lower-temperature cooking of dishes, such as appetizers and sides. Pitmasters and novice grillers alike choose Kingsford® charcoal to keep their grills burning bright. These briquets light faster and
burn hotter than other fuel sources. Follow these tips for creating the perfect two-zone charcoal fire: Light your coals using a chimney starter or lighter fluid. For high heat, use a full chimney of charcoal or light a pile of about 100 briquettes. Pour out your hot coals on one side or use a spatula or tongs to carefully move all the coals to cover 50 percent of the lower grill grate. The void space, free of coals directly underneath the grates, is still hot. Food will cook there — just not as fast as on the direct side, right above the coals. Use the hot side of your grill for direct cooking with high heat—for example, searing a steak to get good color, caramelization and grill marks. Use the other side for slow, indirect cooking and to let foods cook through after searing. The coal-free side also serves as a flame-free zone. In case of flare-ups, just move your food to the indirect side until the flames subside, then move them back to the direct side to finish cooking.
For more grilling tips and recipes, visit www.kingsford. com. Barbecue Meatball Skewers with Mozzarella Makes: 20 meatball skewers Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 12 minutes
Barbecue Meatball Skewers
1 pound ground beef 1/2 cup bread crumbs 1/3 cup basil, chopped 1 egg, scrambled 3 tablespoons onion, diced 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 ounces fresh mozzarella 2 cups KC Masterpiece Kansas City Classic Barbecue Sauce 20 3-inch wooden skewers Build a charcoal fire for indirect cooking using Kingsford® Charcoal by situating the coals on only one side of the grill, leaving the
other side void. Preheat to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In medium bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, basil, egg, onion and salt. Mix well. Form about 20 meatballs using 2 tablespoons of beef mixture for each meatball. Place meatballs over indirect heat and close grill lid. Cook for 10 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 160°F. While meatballs cook, form a ball of mozzarella (1 teaspoon each) around each wooden skewer, 1 inch from end. Remove meatballs from
grill and stick a mozzarella skewer into top of each meatball. Place back on grill over indirect heat, close grill lid and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until cheese melts. Pour 2 cups barbecue sauce into bowl. Once cheese melts, remove each skewer from grill and immediately dip meatball into barbecue sauce, up to bottom of melted cheese. Serve warm. A
mazon is still feeling the outrage of consumers over what some are calling the epic fail of Prime Day. Consumers anticipated getting great deals of up to 70% on items that they desired since the sale was promoted as being better than a Black Friday sale. What they got in reality were sales on items they didn’t want and limited quantities of items they did want. All this equal a bunch of frustration. Despite what consumers are saying, Amazon is touting increase sales stating that orders surpassed 2014 Black Friday orders. For more information, visit www.cnn.com.
