COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

That’s what strikes me. There but for the grace of God.” That was President Obama’s reaction when he became the first sitting U.S. president to visit a federal prison, the mediumsecurity El Reno Federal Correctional Institution near Oklahoma City. “These are young people who made mistakes that aren’t that different than the mistakes I made and the mistakes that a lot of you guys made,” the president told the press. “(W)e have a tendency sometimes to almost take for granted or think it’s normal that so many young people end up in our criminal justice system. It’s not normal. ... What is normal is teenagers doing stupid things.” Obama’s statement was part of a new-found commitment to reform the criminal justice system, including

POLITICAL By

ith about 100 days to Election Day, November 3rd, Houston City Council campaigns are hot with cash-on-hand. While most reporting is pledged to who will be CEO when Mayor Annise Parker retires January 2nd, those running to serve as council members, the city’s legislative body, hit every check writer they could find before the June 30th required public reporting deadline. Steve Costello is term limited from another run for At Large 1 and is running for Mayor. Tom McCasland hopes to succeed Costello, having served as Harris County Housing Authority CEO, cited $141,983.74 raised and $98,041.48 C-O-H. The Yale Law graduate that grew up at an Arizona Indian reservation faces Harris County Democratic Party Chair Lane Lewis. Lewis, a Charter School executive and former teacher, cited $104,769.22 contributions with $62,839.90 C-O-H. He campaigns hard with McCasland hardly seen. The race features Houston Community College Trustee Chris Oliver with $37,585 raised and C-O-H $23,671.56 and Georgia Provost’s $5,500 raised and C-O-H $4,548.65. Also in the race are Griff Griffin and Trebor Gordon declaring little in fundraising. David Robinson running for his second At-Large 2 term raised $112,109.77 with C-O-H $135,680.60. Robinson faces two prior opponents including the incumbent he beat in the 2013 run-off Andrew Burks, who cited no money raised and no C-O-H, and Modesto Rivera, who he beat in the 2013 general election who also reported

reducing long-term mandatory sentencing, alleviating conditions within prisons and new efforts to help ex-offenders get a start on the outside. Obama is not alone. Driven partly by the financial squeeze and partly by spreading protests, reform of mass incarceration suddenly has bipartisan appeal. Hillary Clinton decried mass incarceration policies as “wrong,” even though many of them were championed by her husband. Bill Clinton admitted his policies had “put too many people in prison and for too long.” As Republican governors sought ways to save money and address overcrowding in jails, Newt Gingrich joined in calling for sentencing reform. A new coalition, The Coalition for Public Safety, has been launched with support from everyone from the ACLU and George Soros to FreedomWorks and the Koch brothers. Senators from both parties have rushed to introduce bills to revise federal sentencing guidelines for nonviolent offenders. The president recently commuted the sentences of 46 men and women convicted under those guidelines. More than 2 million people are still held in prisons and jails. The United States has 5 percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of its

prison inmates. Millions of lives have been destroyed by harsh sentencing for what the president recognized were the “normal mistakes” that teenagers make. Of the 2.3 million people in U.S. prisons, 93 percent are men. About two out of three are people of color. The majority is being held for nonviolent crimes (drugs, property theft and “public order” offenses). Sensible sentences would be a good first step but hardly sufficient. These destructive policies, now admitted to be wrong-headed, have devastated Black and Latino communities, with millions of lives ruined. If you careen recklessly off the road and smash into someone’s living room, sorry isn’t sufficient. At the very least, you will be responsible for repairing the damage done. We need fundamental reform of our criminal justice system from racial profiling to mandatory sentences. But we also have to redress the damage done to families and communities. Commuting sentences is a start, but we need new programs to rehabilitate those who are sick or addicted. We need investment and jobs so that those who made stupid mistakes can find decent work. When Reagan and Clinton led

a bipartisan push to lock more people up, they provided some of the money needed for new prisons, more cops and more equipment. The bipartisan push to rectify the wrong-headed policies should provide the money needed to correct the damage, and to insure that kids who make mistakes receive a new start, not a life in ruins. After Baltimore, the reform movement has gained momentum. But apologies and sentencing changes aren’t enough. It’s not enough to save money on prisons the young don’t need; we’ve got to invest in the schools, training and jobs that they desperately need. You can write to the Rev. BOOK REVIEW

N By

Only the Strong

Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

ever underestimate yourself. You can carry the weight of ten worlds on your shoulders, and still have time to do your job. You can lift spirits, move mountains, and haul out in a hot minute. You have more power deep inside you than you realize – but, as in the new novel, “Only the Strong” by Jabari Asim, you still have weaknesses. Lorenzo “Guts” Tolliver never had reason to show a soft side. Being soft, in fact, was detrimental to his life and his job as right-hand man for Ananias Goode, who more-or-less ran Gateway City. Softness wasn’t what you wanted a man to see as you broke his legs or killed him. Well over six feet tall and looking like a tank, Guts was deceptively fast of feet and fists, and Goode something in Guts years ago that he liked. Through the decades, Goode learned to trust Guts, and he liked him – so when Guts asked to step back as Goode’s driver-body-guard-enforcer, Goode gave his blessing. It was, Goode knew, all about a woman. He knew because he, too, had a woman he wanted but really couldn’t have. Years ago, when she was just fifteen, Dr. Artinces Noel watched her Mama wither away from grief, and she promised herself that she’d never fall that in love with a man. She might have kept her promise to herself – work, charities, her clinic, saving black babies from death-by-being-poor, those were her life – but then Ananias Goode came around one night with a stab wound that he wanted quietly stitched. One thing led to another, led to a regular Wednesday session at a local motel, but they couldn’t let anyone know.

by Jabari Asim

Ananias Goode was still a married man. Deep inside his well-appointed home, amid whooshing respirators and the smell of antiseptic, the comatose Mrs. Goode lay curled in a fetal position, a victim of the war her husband had with another gang, a war that also left her infant son dead. Remembering that, knowing it, was something Ananias Goode lived with. And for the man watching him, it was also something Goode would die with… Wow. Well, here’s the thing: I almost never read a book twice, especially a novel. I’d definitely make an exception for this one. The most appealing thing about “Only the Strong,” I think, was that it seemed as though I lived inside the story itself, and finishing it felt like I’d been evicted. I felt unmoored. Author Jabari Asim does that: he draws a reader in with richly-worked characters who, though often despicable, are attentiongrabbing; settings that you can almost step right into; and flashbacks that move the story forward at a perfect pace. That’s the kind of writing that sometimes makes you forget that you’re reading a piece of fiction. Yep: wow. Though I generally don’t like to compare authors, Mosley fans will eat this debut novel right up. It’s noir, it’s fast-paced, it’s hard-hitting, and it’s one you shouldn’t miss. “Only the Strong” will leave you weak in the knees. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Sandra Bland’s Death Ruled Suicide by Hanging

T

he cause of Sandra Bland’s death was hanging; the manner of death was suicide, a prosecutor told reporters, citing preliminary autopsy results. Warren Diepraam, a Waller County, Texas, prosecutor, provided details Thursday to support those findings. Bland -- a black woman whose arrest and, days later, death in custody stirred anger nationwide -did not have injuries Sandra Bland on her hands. She did have approximately 30 “cut marks,” on her left wrist, he said, which were in a state of healing. “There were no bite marks or other injuries on her face, on her lips, on her tongue, which would be consistent with a violent struggle,” said Diepraam. If there had been a violent struggle, the prosecutor said, examiners would most likely not expect to see a uniform and consistent mark around Bland’s neck -which is what they, in fact, observed. Bland did have lacerations or abrasions on her wrists, which are consistent with being handcuffed and struggling, Diepraam said. He also told reporters she had marijuana in her system at the time of her death. State report: Jail that held Bland did not make timely checks Guards in the jail that held Bland violated policies by failing to do timely checks on inmates, a report obtained Thursday by CNN shows. The formulaic, two-page “special inspection report” from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards does not mention Bland by name. But it was filed on July 16, three days after Bland’s body was found in her cell, a death that authorities characterized as a suicide, but that family, friends and their supporters think is suspicious. A timeline from the Waller County Sheriff’s Office of what’s seen in video from the jail states that a male guard stopped and briefly talked with Bland shortly after 7 a.m., but no one came back to check on her until 8:55 a.m. That’s when jail personnel found her not breathing and hanged with a trash bag from a metal barrier that separated the bathroom from the rest of her cell, a death the sheriff’s office said “appears to be self-inflicted asphyxiation.” The state report notes that there should be a “visual, face-to-face observation of all inmates by jailers no less than once every 60 minutes.” Not nearly two hours, as was the case in Bland. In fact, the inspection report found that “documentation ... revealed that Waller County is not completing (such checks) as required by Minimum Jail Standards.” That’s not the only apparent violation. The same report states county officials didn’t provide proof that jail staff had two hours of annual training with “the local mental health authorities ... in accordance with their approved Mental Disabilities/Suicide Prevention Plan.” “The training is to include the recognition, supervision, documentation and handling of inmates who are mentally disabled and/or potentially suicidal,” it says. Separately, an inmate who was held in a cell adjacent to Bland told CNN she did not hear any commotion or screaming that would suggest foul play before the 28-year-old woman was found dead. The woman, who asked not to be identified, said Bland was emotional and often crying during her three days in the jail. The inmate says she spoke with Bland twice, and that Bland told her she was worried about not being able to talk with her family members, and was stressed about missing her first day of work at her new job. Goode, Managing Editor

uick: What are your first thoughts when hearing the word wedding? Naturally bride, groom, the dress, flowers come to mind. All those frilly things are important for a beautiful wedding ceremony but there is one component that trumps them all… love. “A wedding is about two people coming together and proclaiming their love for one another in front of their family and friends,” said wedding and entertaining expert David Tutera. Celebrating love has been a passion of Tutera since his teen years. Spawning a lucrative business, television shows, and countless design collections. In the bridal world, Tutera is the man. A David Tutera wedding is not just a detailed affair it is an orchestrated experience. He truly understands that a wedding is more than that one day. It is an experience that is treasured forever, relived often, and has no do overs. Tutera is genesis in the way he executes a wedding from taking the ideas of the couples combining them with his brilliant imagination and creating something that one could never dream or knew existed. Brides hammer to get to him for their big day but not every bride is lucky enough to have the expertise of Tutera as their planner. So Tutera is giving brides the next best thing with his Your Wedding Experience tour. “I’m always trying to find new and exciting ways that I can personally be involved in helping couples plan their wedding,” said Tutera about the tour that is coming to Houston on Sunday, August 9th. “This is not something I am just putting my name on, I am actually hosting it as well and allowing couples to touch, feel and experience all of the trend forward ideas and inspiration that I have personally come up with alongside their city’s local vendors, hand picked by me, to help get their wedding planning off to a great start!” After the ring Once a single lady becomes a fiancé the first thing she should is to take pleasure in the moment. Most brides are so excited that they want to jump right into planning the big day. Stop! Breathe and relax! Hopefully this will be a one time life event and you don’t want to rush through every minute of the experience. Tutera says that is one of the biggest mistakes brides make by not enjoying first being engaged before rushing into the other details. Begin to think about your budget after some time has passed. This will dictate your day and make planning easier. Hiring an event planner should be your next step if thee budget allows. A wedding can be done without one but you want someone to help in planning for so many reasons. Tutera points out a few. A wedding planner is a professional in the industry, which means they know

Walking Down the Aisle with David Tutera for Your Wedding Experience Houston Tutera advises that food should always be served at a wedding reception but it does not always have to be a meal. “While there is no rule mandating that every wedding needs to have a 5-course sit down dinner, there are other ways that you can scale back tastefully on catering costs, while still ensuring your guests are fed,” Tutera says. Offering a small buffet or a simple cocktail style reception with passed hors d’oeuvres is a great alternative.

the ropes of wedding planning. Brides must understand that going and being in a wedding are a lot different from planning your own wedding. A wedding planner helps with charting out a timeline, remembering the finer details, and just the overall smoothness of the process. This takes stress away from the bride, especially on the big day. A planner is good for the connections they have made because that can save money. They work with various vendors often and can negotiate a better deal for services rendered on your behalf. The fine details The basics of a wedding are great but it is the fine details that make it spectacular. Tread lightly in this area. Any fan of Tutera’s wedding shows knows brides can go off in the deep end when it comes to the smaller details. Weddings can go from classy to tacky real quick. “Planning a wedding is very exciting yes, but that does not mean you need to purchase every little trinket you find online just because it coincides with your color scheme!” warns Tutera. Take a step back and look at the entire scope of your wedding to see how all elements coincide. The details should not overpower everything but compliment everything. Tutera added, “Worry about the larger, more important elements of your wedding and then you can work on shading in any smaller details, should you still need them, from there. Prioritizing is key.” Décor is a needed detail that can go way too far very fast with so many design elements. Less truly is more. The best and most inexpensive way to have some really romantic décor is with lighting. According to Tutera, the impact of lighting is a detail that brides overlook. “Whether you have a tall over-the-top centerpiece or a low simple arrangement, lighting sets the mood, compliments the rest of your décor, and makes everything feel more romantic

July 23 - July 29, 2015

and high end,” Tutera informed. Changing the lighting up throughout the night is one of Tutera’s favorite things to do. Hues of pink for the love of the couple, earth tones to welcome guests to the reception, oranges and reds as the party heats and blue and green lighting to cool it down as everyone prepares to leave. “It makes all the difference,” Tutera commented. Also don’t forget to add personal touches to make it your wedding instead of a wedding. Have a candle in memory those no longer with you. Show off the kid in you by having a candy buffet. If you love to smile with your friends have a photo booth. Spotlight your personality with a pop of color on your shoes to peak out from under your white dress.

David Tutera

Don’t break the bank at the reception The biggest expense for a wedding is the reception due to the food and beverage budget. Getting an accurate head count is vital in planning (Side note: Wedding guests if you are going to attend the wedding rsvp. But if you are not, don’t waste the couple’s money by rsvping and not showing up. Or don’t do the vice versa of showing up and not rsvping.)

www.StyleMagazine.com

Enjoy the day Planning a wedding can be one of the most stressful, nerve wracking, emotional events in your life because every thing has to be perfect. Brides invest some much time and energy in making sure every desire of their heart (and sometimes those of others) is implemented. However, on the day of your wedding, if you forgot something or if something goes wrong, don’t worry. The most important aspect of wedding is love – the love between two people. On your wedding day just relax (as much as possible) and breathe in each moment of your special day. Take mental pictures in your mind because they will be there for a lifetime. “You want to look back and remember the overflow of love and enjoyment you had on that day, not the mistake of the wedding cake being the wrong flavor,” said Tutera. He always tells brides on their wedding day that they need to be a guest at their own wedding. “A bride should be able to relax and enjoy her wedding day; after all, you do spend many months planning every detail so that you can do just that-enjoy it! “ No matter if they are big or small wedding days major in the details. Composing intricate touches of beautiful elements coming together in the celebration of two people becoming one. That love of the couple is the greatest component of the day. “The designs and the flowers and the invitations are all things that are beautiful and encompass a wedding celebration, but at the end of the day, there is only one meaning, one importance, and one reason you are there---for the celebration of Love. If all of the over-the-top, extravagant elements weren’t present, love would still be, and that’s what matters.” See David Tutera in person on Sunday, August 9th at the NRG Center for Your Wedding Experience Presented by David Tutera. Enjoy prize giveaways, show specials & discounts, over 100 David Tutera approved vendors, wedding catwalks, and meet David Tutera & Buddy Valastro, the Cake Boss. Tickets starting at $25 are now available. For more information, visit www.yourweddingexperience.com. Read more of my interview with David Tutera at www.stylemagazine.com.

New Treatment Erases Signs of Cellulite

F

ighting the bumpy, lumpy appearance of cellulite is a discouraging battle many women face. After all, although it may successfully sculpt and tone the muscle below, no amount of time in the gym is likely to erase the telltale dimples of cellulite. Cellulite is the result of a push and pull between fibrous bands that connect skin, muscle and fatty tissue. Fat cells push against the skin, while the fibrous bands pull away toward the muscle. The result is the uneven skin surface that resembles an orange peel or even cottage cheese. Risk factors To some extent, the presence of cellulite is influenced by genetics, and although weight gain can emphasize the dimples, some lean people also have cellulite. Older individuals, whose skin is less elastic, as well as those with inactive lifestyles, are more prone to cellulite. Treatment options While there is no medical concern associated with cellulite, it can hamper self-esteem and drive affected individuals to avoid clothing that may expose skin showing the presence of those dreaded dimples, such as bathing suits and shorts. For the most part, there are few options to treat, reduce or eliminate the appearance of cellulite. A doctor, dermatologist or plastic surgeon can help you explore appropriate treatment options, which, according to the experts at the Mayo Clinic, may include some combination of weight loss, laser or radiofrequency systems, or liposuction. However, a new minimally invasive procedure was recently cleared by the FDA to improve the appearance of cellulite for at least a year – longer than any other FDA-cleared treatment for cellulite. Performed by a qualified physician in an office setting, the Cellfina™ System uses innovative, proprietary technology to treat the primary structural cause of cellulite. By releasing the fibrous bands under the dimpled areas, Cellfina provides a long-term solution to cellulite in just one treatment session. The result is a smoother look that gives patients the confidence to wear a bathing suit and higher hemlines. “I’ve been practicing liposuction for 20 years, so I’ve been dealing with women and body issues and what they see when they look in the mirror for a long time,” said Dr. Michael Kaminer, a dermatologist, managing partner at Skin Care Physicians and associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale Medical School. “It’s a really neat thing to have the technology now that allows me to say, I can help you.” Kaminer says Cellfina treats the primary structural cause of cellulite, is minimally invasive, and is unique in that it is FDA cleared for improvement in cellulite that lasts at least a year. Including the administration of a local numbing agent, the procedure takes less than an hour, depending on the number of dimples being PERFECT FOR FATHER’S DAY! treated and the patient’s individual needs. Food Meets Decor with Hot Wedding Trends

Replace Traditional Wedding Cake with Tiered Cheese Wheels Add savory to traditional sweets by layering wheels of various Real California cheeses.

hen it comes to weddings (or pretty much any party), unique is the new traditional, and no event should be created alike. One of the most buzzedabout trends for the big day is to have fun with food by creating edible displays that are anything but expected. Guests will fall in love with a deliciously entertaining menu that doubles as memorable wedding decor. Spanning every course, from appetizers to wedding cake, these arrangements take dishes from dull to distinctive and will keep guests talking about the wedding to remember. Tr a d i t i o n a l d a i r y products – cheese, ice cream, butter and milk – can serve as simple staples to any impressive consumable creation. The expert party and event styling pros at The TomKat Studio offer the following howto guide for creating a standout wedding reception and dining experience. These unique ideas all feature dairy foods, with a special focus on another timely wedding trend: the rustic theme.

Style Tip: Display layered cheese cake with paper flags describing the type of cheese for each layer. Follow these steps to make the cake picture perfect: Keep textures and colors in mind. Neutral-colored rinds offer a rustic look while waxy exteriors boasting yellow or other hues are best for colorful celebrations. Cater to different tastes by choosing an array of cheese profiles. For example, pairing salty manchego, buttery Camembert and nutty SwissI t a l i a n c h e e s e s o ff e r a n interesting contrast of flavors. For lower tiers, select a hard or semi-hard cheese for a solid foundation. Soft and semi-soft cheese can be used for upper tiers. Stacking the wheels works perfectly. using crumbly cheeses, add parchment between layers. To add edible and nonedible decorations between tiers, place a shallow bowl between the tiers to prop up wheels. Then, decorations can be placed around bowl, camouflaging this structural element between cake layers. Edible items can include nuts, chocolate, fresh fruit and produce, while flowers and foliage work best for nonedibles. Raise a Toast to Cookies and Milk “Cheers” takes a unique form when warm chocolate chip cookies are wrapped around cold Real California Milk.

Serve Deconstructed Cheesecake Switch out the traditional cheesecake. Instead, pair delicate squares of cheese with complementary flavors, such as delicious slices of fruits, veggies, spreads and finely sliced meat cuts. Place each bite-sized morsel on upright forks that are lined up within shallow, wooden boxes that are adorned with labels marking each dessert option. Style Tip: Place a Styrofoam layer in boxes and top with salt to hide the foam and to give a clean, white appearance while anchoring forks within each box. Create a Cool Ice Cream Destination Put a creamy twist on the traditional lemonade stand. Scoop Real California ice cream at a wooden ice cream stand, serving the bride’s and groom’s favorite ice cream flavors and toppings.

Style Tip: Create custom signage for the mini structure using the newlywed’s names and drill wood planks to serve as cone holders that are displayed on stand while guests wait for their orders. Send Guests Off with a Midnight Snack Box Keep guests talking about the fun, memorable evening with a takeaway box filled with a selection of cheese, chocolate and individual milk bottles or champagne splits for guests to enjoy post-wedding. Style Tip: Place contents in reusable wooden, wire or paper box wrapped in w e d d i n g colors and customized with the couple’s names and wedding date.
