Government Health Care Success: 49 Years of Medicare & Medicaid
COMMENTARY
Jesse Jackson
National Writer
T
his week marks the 49th anniversary of two of the most important “big government” programs ever -- Medicare and Medicaid. On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed these two critical health care programs into law. At the signing ceremony, LBJ handed the first two Medicare cards to former President Harry Truman, who had called for the program years before, and his wife, former First Lady Bess Truman. Contradicting the conservative fable that “big government” programs never work, Medicare has made the lives of millions of American senior citizens more secure and healthier. Medicaid has improved the lives of millions more poor Americans, by giving them access to health care at a fair price. These programs are among the most important legislation passed during LBJ’s Great Society, and are so

part of the Affordable Care Act, an opportunity for millions of “near-poor” Americans to gain access to health care at a low cost. Yet despite demonstrated need, despite dire health problems, despite the negative impact this denial of Medicaid is having on both individual families and many existing hospitals, the fear of reprisals from Tea Party voters has made GOP Governors afraid to help their own citizens. So they block Medicaid expansion to their own people, even though the Federal Government will pay almost all the costs, and even though there is demonstrated need. This is just wrong. In 22 states, many of them among our nation’s poorest states, Republican Governors and state legislatures are refusing to expand Medicaid. Almost half of those refusals come from the states that made up the old Confederacy (10 out of 11, with only Arkansas, headed by a Democratic Governor, attempting to find an alternative solution to expansion). Wisconsin and Maine and Alaska, along with another 9 states across the Midwest and in the Upper Rockies, are also refusing to expand Medicaid -- almost all of them headed by Republican Governors. This is just wrong. Their constituents need access to health care, too. As we mark the 49th anniversary of the signing of Medicare and
Medicaid programs into law, we should consider that poor families today also need health care, just as seniors did in 1965, just as poor people did in 1965. Medicare and Medicaid were two of the greatest accomplishments of President Johnson’s Great Society. If Republican governors would set aside their partisan hostility toward President Obama and the Affordable Care Act, they could ease the worries of millions of their constituents, and make their lives both healthier and more secure. It’s the right thing to do. It’s the moral thing to do. The 49th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid this week reminds us that an expansion of Medicaid everywhere could help America be a better, healthier nation. I call on the GOP to keep hope alive for all their constituents, even their less affluent constituents, and their minority constituents. I call on them to stop blocking access to Medicaid. It’s time to do the right thing, and end their partisan obstruction. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Transportation Funding Vote Featured On This Fall’s Texas Ballot
exas is experiencing the fastest population growth in the country adding more than 1,000 people a day and for those increasingly tired of traffic or tires wearing from broken roads the relief is coming on the bottom of this November’s General Election ballot with a proposition to move $1.4 billion from the state’s Economic Stabilization “rainy day” to state highway projects. “The ballot this November 4th with early voting starting Monday, October 20th will start with US Senator and governor races but toward the bottom of the ballot is going to be a proposed Texas Constitution Amendment to provide billions more in reliable transportation funding – an estimated $1.4 billion in the first year alone – without new taxes, fees or debt,” State Rep. Sarah Davis told the formation meeting of the Houston Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Government Affairs Committee lunch Wednesday, July 23. “I drive to Austin all the time and I know all of us drive across the city frustrated by the lack of maintenance on the roads and the inability of the Texas Department of Transportation to build roads to keep up with how

popular that Republicans spend every election cycle pretending that they really support expanding coverage, while spending a lot of their legislative time in the House and Senate trying to whittle down both programs. Today is no different. Conservatives on the Supreme Court have just ruled that a key provision of the Affordable Care Act is invalid, putting an important national law in jeopardy -- on a technicality! This law was argued and debated over two long, arduous years. Everyone voiced their opinion, and still does. Lies were told about what “Obamacare” would supposedly do. Dire predictions of failure were made by conservative pundits -too few people would sign up; too few young people would sign up, it would kill millions of jobs. None of that proved true. Poor and middle-class Americans have signed up for the Affordable Care Act at rates higher than expected, among them millions of the young. No death panels have emerged, despite the predictions of Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann. And the economy has continued to grow, despite right-wing attempts to obstruct progress. Yet far too many Republican Governors and legislatures, especially across the South, continue to prevent the expansion of Medicaid to their own citizens. Medicaid expansion is a key
many more people seem to be with us on the roads. Voting for this amendment would authorize annual disbursements from the state’s oil and gas production tax collections to the State Highway Fund assist in the completion of transportation construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects, not to include toll roads,” said the buoyant legislator and lawyer, Davis, that represents southwest Houston from Meyerland and Maplewood to the Texas Medical Center, River Oaks, West University, Bellaire and Southside Place and based on her voting record is considered one of the more independent legislators to go to Austin’s gold dome every other year. Davis graduated from Sugar Land Dulles High School in 1994 and then earned her economics college from Baylor University where she excelled at debate and she went from there to earn a law degree from the University of Houston. Davis was first elected to the Texas House in 2010 defeating incumbent Ellen Cohen. She was re-elected in 2012 in one of Texas’ most watched races and currently serves on the Public Health, Calendars, and Appropriations committees serving as Secretary of the Women’s Health

ence. The constitutional amendment would provide a significant difference in addressing Texas’ unmet transportation needs but the amendment alone does not “solve” Texas’ transportation funding challenge, she said. Experts say Texas has at least $5 billion in unmet transportation needs each year and she said this plus cuts in waste mandated by the amendment will be a start. Texas is expected to add 18 million people by 2040. That’s in addition to the 27 million Texans today. Based on the current 1.1 registered vehicles per citizen, that means another 18 million additional vehicles on Texas roads by 2040. “Most important is for us to move forward to make a difference. This is Texas doing something to take responsibility in doing something,” she said. Please call Peggy at 713.836.8405 to learn more about the Houston Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Will the Astrodome Be a Historical Landmark?
T
he decision on whether the Astrodome will be a Historical Landmark is in the hands of the members of the Texas Historical Commission. Members are in talks this week in Alpine, Texas for their quarterly meeting to make the important decision. If the Astrodome is granted antiquities landmark status demolition would become more difficult as all construction work would have to be preapproved. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett had hope that the Commission would delay the vote on the Dome so the county could come up with a better solution on its fate. And he got his wish. The Commission voted this past Wednesday to table the vote to a later date thereby leaving a little wiggle room for the county to determine the fate of the Dome. esidents of Houston’s oldest African American historic neighborhood are in a fight with Houston City Council once again. Houston City Council approved a new road project this past June to redo the brick roads in the area to install new sewer pipes. The residents are not opposing the new sewer pipes but they are opFreedman’s Town posing the route the city wishes to take. Instead of destroying the brick roads laid down by freed slaves some years ago, residents propose going underneath the brick roads using a tunnel system to install new pipes. Although the city plans to move forward with the project, they will have an archaeologist on site to help with preservation. For more information, visit facebook.com/saveourhistoricbricks.

ne for me, and one for you. Divvying up candy when you were a kid was an almost-exact science. Everybody had to have an equal amount, and they watched closely to ensure that happened. One for you, one for me. Even Steven, it’s all the same. But, in the new book “Laws of Wrath” by Eriq La Salle, what’s good for the goose might kill the gander. Phee Freeman could never forget why his brother left the family. A.J. was gay, which was something that neither Phee, nor their father, Clay, could accept back then. When Phee and Clay learned the truth, it was as if A.J. had never been born. Phee couldn’t forget that, nor could he forgive himself for shunning his only brother – especially when A.J. was found mutilated and dead. Naturally, Clay Freeman mourned for his eldest son but as an older man, Clay had seen death before. He’d lost his beloved wife years ago – but prior to that, he’d been on the wrong edge of trouble and the right end of a gun. It wasn’t something he was proud of, but that was all in the past. ecole Roques, 24, and Dexter Sewell, 25, may soon get their just reward. The families of the men have filed a lawsuit after the men were left brain damaged as a result of a high-speed chase that ended in a car crash with Houston Police officers. HPD was in pursuit of a stolen constable’s car and reportedly used the car that Roques and Sewell were in as a roadblock. As a result the men have not been able to work or provide for their families. It is reported that the families were seeking at least $30 million and the city council is expected to settle the suit for $5 million. For more information, visit texascivilrightsproject.org.

Laws of Wrath of A.J. Freeman, he needed his partner by his side. Having been a team for years, he and Phee were known around the NYPD for being the best at solving unusual cases – so when a second mutilated body was found, Cavanaugh knew that this would be one of the strangest cases of all. Years ago, there were other corpses with similar mutilations, but Dr. Daria Zibik, the person behind those murders, was sitting in prison. She couldn’t have committed these crimes, but Cavanaugh knew that Zibik led a Satanic cult and had prepared someone to take over until her release. It made sense for him to offer Zibik a deal in order to figure out why innocent people were being tortured and killed. But time was of the essence. A killer was on the loose, and he apparently had the Freeman family in his sights…There are two things you need to know about “Laws of Wrath.” First of all, this book screams for an editor and a disabled comma key. Yes, it’s rough, littered with extraneous (and incorrect) punctuation and choppy sentences - both of which are increasingly irritating as the pages fly by. Which brings me to the second thing: the pages will fly by be-

cause, though his story can be quite gruesome at times, author Eriq La Salle gives thriller fans that edge-ofthe-seat feeling they crave. There are good guys here that are filled out nicely and criminals who couldn’t be more evil. I was also pleased to note that while I saw some of the ending coming, I didn’t see it all. Walker Smith Novel Release At Red Cat Jazz Live
he club is packed, two men are sitting on stage talking. One is obviously nervous, uncomfortable, the other is the life of the room. People in the audience laugh, get quiet, laugh again. We’re all on the edge of our seats listening to their conversation. “You can fool them but you can’t fool me,” the trumpet player said. Just like that Author Walker Smith managed to transform The Red Cat Jazz Café in 2014 into a smoky Jazz Lounge during the height of the Harlem Renaissance. After reading an excerpt from her novel she now has actors playing out a scene. The crowd is mature, suits and dresses, the after work crowd at 6pm on a Friday. There’s a live band, there’s a small buffet. The atmosphere works on a lot of levels and makes it more than a book release but a party. Walker Smith writes historically black fiction novels. She’s trying to keep alive the genre that the greats before her like James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Toni Morrison, Ralph Ellison, Alice Walker, and other giants in African American literature started. Walker Smith’s novels continue this tradition with stories about the day-to-day lives of African Americans and their essential place in the history of this country and society. “With a keen instinct for human feeling and a sharp ear for diverse dialects, Smith writes dialogue and characters that pulse with familiarity and truth.
We know these people; they come complete with heroics as well as sins. A strong literary novel should make the reader laugh, cry, and think. These books inspire and inform through storytelling, without preaching. No matter what decade or setting (The Color Line: 1920s; Bluestone: 1930s - 1970s; In My Father’s House: 1950s - 1970s; Letters from Rome: 1970s - present day), today’s readers can relate to the characters and their conflicts, joys, pain, and salvation.” ~ Excerpt from Walker Smith’s Biography Anyway you want to measure what a successful book signing is; Walker Smith’s release of her novel “Bluestone Rondo” was a success. It also goes to show how the literary industry is changing from bookstores and quiet coffee shops to being more interactive and selling not just your writing but your brand. 3 Tips for Staying Hydrated This Summer

outings or enjoying warm weather days:
A
s warmer temperatures heat up the summer nationwide, being prepared for the season’s outdoor activities means more than sunscreen protection and appropriate dress. Health experts state that keeping yourself hydrated by drinking enough water and other beverages when temperatures rise is critical to safely enjoying the fun of the season. “While we typically put time and thought into what we’ll serve at family barbeques or which foods to bring to the beach or park, we sometimes overlook the need to hydrate throughout the day, particularly on hot summer days,” says registered dietitian Lisa Katic. “If you feel thirsty or worn down, it’s a sign you’re likely already past the need to re-hydrate,” Katic suggests, and offers three hydration-related tips to remember when packing the cooler for summer

Diet beverages help with hydration Katic says there are too many myths about diet beverages, such as sodas and teas. For example, you may have heard that they can make you hungrier or dehydrate you. This simply isn’t the case based on the body of science. In fact, a recent clinical trial published in the June issue of the journal “Obesity” found that dieters who drank diet beverages as part of an overall weight loss program were able to not only
Don’t forget foods can hydrate too “Most people know there are many benefits to eating more fruits and vegetables for overall health,” adds Katic. “But consuming fruits and vegetables higher in water content can also aid in proper hydration.” Summer snack favorites such as watermelon, strawberries and cantaloupe are fruits with a high water content of 90 to 91 percent, while veggies like lettuce, tomatoes and celery are even higher, containing as much as 95 percent water. Beyond the heat of summer, Katic says it’s also a good idea to make hydration a part of your everyday life year round. “Staying hydrated also has been shown to reduce the risk of other health problems, such as heart disease, hypertension, exercise asthma and hyperglycemia.” For more tips on ensuring you and your family stay hydrated while enjoying summertime fun, visit www.eatright.org. Indique Delivers Star-Quality Virgin Hair to the Houston Area
ndique Hair International is one of the leading premium hair extension brands in the global market. They are the only hair company that produces hair extensions at the source — their headquarters in India. The demand for their high-quality hair has allowed them to grow at an inconceivable rate. In fact, their expansion landed them a spot on the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest growing companies of 2013. With boutiques in 11 of the country’s major metropolitan areas, Indique is one of the most handson virgin hair companies in a market over-saturated with unhelpful online-only wholesalers. Indique’s Co-Founder, Creative Director, and Austin native Ericka Dotson played a major role in opening newest boutique in Houston. “The Houston boutique opening is near and dear to my heart. I’m a native Texan and I’m honored to bring the Indique experience to my home state,” said Dotson. In addition to their helpful in-boutique hair specialists, Indique also has incredible star power. Indique has worked with celebrity clients like Ciara, Brandy, Lala Anthony, Lady Gaga, Laurieann Gibson, Rihanna, Eve, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu. I visited the company’s boutique in Silver Spring, MD and spoke with hair specialist Tiara Dunn about all things Indique. The Collections There’s truly something for everyone at Indique. The company has six unique collections: the BOUNCE Collection™, HYSTERIA Collection™,

Bring enough water Remembering to drink water before, during and after activities is important, but especially when doing outdoor or intense activities in the summer months. Experts with the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association note that water intake improves overall mental and physical health, and improves heart function while reducing both actual and perceived exertion. The Institute of Medicine recommends a total fluid intake of 11 eightounce cups (91 ounces total) a day for women and 15 cups for men (125 ounces total), including fluid from all foods and beverages. Katic recommends keeping an extra supply of bottled water in your car, garage, pool and other easily accessible places. Remember, if water isn’t your favorite beverage choice, there are plenty of other beverages to choose from, all of which can help keep you hydrated.
lose weight successfully, but also reported feeling less hungry. “The study’s findings were exciting, especially heading into the summer months, because they validate what other studies have shown — that people need not worry about diet beverages undermining their overall eating plans and that they can even aid in weight loss efforts,” says Katic.
PURE Collection™, STUDIO™ Collection, and the KERATIQUE™ Collection. PURE Collection™ is Indique’s collection of natural, untouched Virgin Indian Hair. Dunn says that the Pure Lindsay of Indique Collection of unprocessed hair is what most people buy when they want “classic virgin hair.” One of Dunn’s favorites, the Pure Wavy, is a popular best seller because it has great texture. “Pure Wavy is good for workouts and for blending purposes,” said Dunn. She says she wears her own Pure Wavy in a ponytail for her everyday workouts, and wears it down on days that she wants to feel more dressed up. She likes the hair because it blends seamlessly into her leave out, and many people can’t even tell that she’s wearing a sew in. The BOUNCE Collection™ is steam processed Indian virgin hair. Each type of hair in this collection has been custom textured by the experts at Indique Headquarters. The products in the

BOUNCE Collection™ feature a more “natural” or “curly” curl pattern. Since this hair is custom textured, Dunn suggests that customers refrain from straightening the hair at the risk of altering the curl pattern. Dunn says that many customers buy the Bounce Relaxed Straight Hair because of its texture and similarity to African-American hair. Like the Bounce collection, the SEA™ Collection is also largely steam processed. However, the SEA™ Collection uses South East Asian Hair. The HYSTERIA Collection™ is especially fun: it’s Indique’s color extension. You can purchase HYSTERIA Collection™ hair in a 4 ounce or 2 ounce bundle in 11 different shades. The pieces in the STUDIO Collection™ - Indique’s custom clip-in hair extensions are perfect for women who want a more “on the go” hair option. The collection features a gorgeous, easy to apply fishnet unit, a clip-in bang option, and individual clip-ins pieces. The KERATIQUE™ Collection is comprised of two types of Keratin-Tip Virgin Indian hair. Dunn says that this collection is good for bonding. For more information, visit indiquehair. com/Houston. Will the Houston Texans Have A Successful 2014 Season?
t seems as though the Houston Texans are having a successful training camp so far. They’ve only had a few minor injuries, two of those being from team standouts Andre Johnson and Arian Foster. Aside from that it’s clear that they have made a lot of strides since the first practice, but the real question is how successful will they be during the 2014 season? After coming off of a losing season in 2013 many forgot that this team actually made a playoff run the year before. After losing head coach Gary Kubiack and gaining Bill O’Brien as the new head coach the Texans potentially have a chance to have a successful season. Bill O’Brien is a winning coach. He has a very intense style of coaching, which the players seem to be adjusting to very well. His defensive coordinator, Romeo Crennel has the defensive line working a brand new but effective defense. Defensive lineman J.J. Watt thinks the defense is coming along well. “I think each day is an improvement. I think that’s the goal. Like I was saying, every day you make mistakes. As long as you understand those mistakes and you correct those mistakes, then you’re getting better,” said Watt. Along with the defense the offense has been making some growth. Bill O’Brien has been seeing a lot of good things during their practice. “I do think the offense improved today (July 30th). I believe there are very competitive practices. Today (July 30th) was a competitive practice. There were a lot of good things that were going on out there on the
field. We just have to eliminate mistakes, which you know, that is what we are going to continue to work to do,” O’Brien said. Aside from a new coaching staff the Texans also got the number 1 draft pick Jadeveon Clowney. In the past certain teams who received the number 1 draft pick did make a playoff run. Clowney is coming off a surgery for a sports hernia, but he has been performing very Texans Training Camp well, and is expected to have a very good season. With some new additions to the team the Texans have a whole new look. Arian Foster came back to practice today (July 30th) after being out for a few days with some hamstring problems. The team was very excited to have him back on the field. “He ran some plays and did a good job. He’s a really good football player, obviously. This team is really counting on him… The Houston Texans need a healthy Arian Foster, so it was good to see him out there today (July 30th),” said O’Brien. O’Brien’s coaching style has had a positive
effect on the Texans. He’s very hands on which the players do like. “Yeah, he’s an intense guy. Obviously, he loves the game and he helps us out a ton,” said tight end Garrett Graham. It’s safe to say that the Texans have made some changes and will have a positive season. It’s a new year and a new team. Houston is very excited to see what the Texans can do. Take the Pledge America: S. Epatha Merkerson Challenges You to Know the ABCs of Diabetes
N
umbers have and will always be an essential part of life. At an early age you learn how to count, and then you put into memory birth dates, phone numbers, etc. As you get older, some numbers become more important than others such as SSN, driver’s license or weight. Well there is another number you can commit to memory and that is your A1C.
keep the blood sugar under control and to reach the A1C goals established with their doctor. Once Merkerson consulted with her doctor on her individualize treatment plan (which may change over the years) she began to alter her lifestyle via diet and exercise to reach her individual health goals. As a firsthand witness on how the disease can alter your life, she committed herself to achieving her A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol goals. She is not only committed to keeping herself healthy but others as well.
Do you know your A1C number? Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and 4-time NAACP Image Award winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson says that it is a very important number to know. Better known for crime fighting as the no-nonsense Lieutenant Anita van Buren on 17-seasons of Law & Order, her film credits include HBO’s Lackawanna Blues, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, Mother and Child, Peeples (with Kerry Washington), and more. It was while promoting her various projects that she got the shock of her life that caused her to know her A1C number. Now she has joined a grass roots campaign with Merck called America’s Diabetes Challenge: Get to Your Goals program to educate others on why they should know their A1C number. She sat down 1-on-1 with Houston Style Magazine to tell us more. Eleven years ago Merkerson was meeting and greeting the public at a health fair. Her role was simply to encourage others to be their own health advocate by taking regular tests and knowing all their important numbers. Little did she know that she should have been taking her own advice. After demonstrating how easy it was to test your blood sugar on camera, a doctor spoke with Merkerson off camera to give her a wake call that her blood sugar was high. Immediately Merkerson made an appointment with her doctor who confirmed that she indeed was a type 2 diabetic. Merkerson knew she had Page 10

S. Epatha Merkerson a family with a history of the illness. She had lost her father and grandmother due to complications with diabetes. Plus two other family members, her brother as well as her Uncle, are diabetic. But it never occurred to her that she might be diabetic. Like many with a new diagnosis, Merkerson began to educate herself on how to manage her newly discovered disease. It was then that she found the importance of her knowing her A1C number and the lifestyle changes she needed to make to reach her health goals. With new found information and knowing that nearly 26 million

Americans are living with type 2 diabetes, she decided to speak up so more would not put their health at risk and tell them the importance of knowing their A1C number. So what is the A1C number? A1C is a number that is found through a blood test that examines your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. The number also helps diabetic patients and their doctor see how well diabetes treatment is working for them. A main goal of type 2 diabetes management is to

Merkerson encourages everyone, especially those with a family history of diabetes, to get their blood sugar checked to make sure they are not diabetic. If the outcome is that they are in fact diabetic, Merkerson then wants them to take the Americas Diabetes Challenge with her. Merkerson is challenging those living with diabetes to step up and join her in taking the pledge to reach their A1C goals. Commiting to the pledge can be done in three missions. Mission 1 is for diabetic patients to work with their doctor to know their A1C number. Mission 2 is to set goals with their doctor and make a plan to reach those goals. Mission 3 is to follow and stick to the plan. “It is important. It is important because it (diabetes) is manageable,” said Merkerson. She continued to say that the complications of unmanaged diabetes are not good or healthy. Step up and take the challenge America with Merkerson. Visit www.americasdiabeteschallenge.com to take the pledge and find out more information. For more stories by Bell visit stylemagazine.com or totallyrandie.com.

TSU Theatre Campers Tell Creole Folktales
By Jessica Crawford, Feature Writer
O
nce upon a time, a group of kids gathered at Texas Southern University to tell the fables of the Caribbean islands. July 26th, Saturday at 6 p.m., the TSU Theatre Camp performed the play “Creole Folktales,” in the university’s Sawyer Auditorium. Erika R. Walton, director of the play, said that many elements of the production honored French Caribbean culture. “It took weeks and weeks of research of the island, and the country, and the food, and the culture in general, to come up with the concept that I came up with,” said Walton. Creole Folk Tales featured stories of a draught, a girl whose mother sent her into the wilderness, and a man who encountered two enchanted birds. Through the use of humor and classic story telling, muses guided the audience through French Caribbean tales. Lizzy Weeden, who participated in the camp along with her two brothers, said she enjoyed the bonds she made during theatre camp. “We got to dance and play. It was really fun,” said Weeden, who participated in the theatre camp for the first
time this year. “I liked making new friends because she (Walton) said theatre is a family.” Wa l t o n said she enjoyed challenging the campers to build more than just their acting skills. “I enjoy every part of it,” said Walton. “Even the parts that were hard. Milk Your Buck for All It’s Worth
E
ating well doesn’t have to mean spending a lot. In fact, there are many ways to eat the foods that make you look and feel your best without hurting your pocketbook. For example, penny for penny, ounce for ounce, milk packs more nutritional value than just about any other beverage you can buy. Here are more reasons why milk is a great option for shoppers looking to squeeze the nutrition out of their food budgets: Nutrients: A true bargain means getting the most out of every dollar – and with food, that means getting the most nutrition for your buck. An eight ounce glass of milk contains nine essential nutrients, including B vitamins for energy, protein for lean muscle, vitamin A for a healthy immune system and five bone-building nutrients. Milk is also the top food source of three out of the four nutrients of concern – the nutrients most likely to be missing in the American diet – calcium, vitamin D and potassium. Protein: From building lean muscle to keeping bones healthy, there’s good reason to add protein to the shopping cart. Protein, especially in the AM, helps to keep you full and satisfied, making it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan. Not all protein sources are created equal so be sure to opt for a complete protein – like the protein in milk. Each eight ounce glass of milk contains eight grams of high-quality protein – that’s more than in an egg! Versatility: Every shopping list should include essential kitchen items, like milk, that are an easy go-to for any meal. A gallon of milk goes a long way; its versatility lends itself well to cereal, smoothies and so much more - making it a convenient and useful item that all home cooks can benefit from hav-
ing on-hand. See how simple good nutrition can be with this fast and filling smoothie recipe. To learn more about the value of milk, visit MilkLife.com.
