Remembering the Future: The 1984 Campaign

COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

T

his year marks the thirtieth anniversary of my 1984 campaign for the presidency. Last Saturday at the kickoff of the annual Rainbow Push Convention, Rep. Maxine Waters led a panel exploring the effects of that campaign -- registering over a million new voters, helping Democrats take back the Senate in 1986, lifting up new leaders from New York City’s David Dinkins to Minnesota’s future Senator Paul Wellstone. But looking in a rear view mirror can tell you where you’ve been, but not where you are going. What strikes me about the 1984 campaign are not the accomplishments of the past, but the implications for the future. In 1984, we argued that the Democratic Party had to reach out to African Americans, Latinos, anti-war progressives, small farmers, the emerging gay and lesbian community -

POLITICAL

By Burt Levine, Political Writer

Today, once more our national agenda is too limited. The economy works only for the few, while most Americans struggle to stay afloat. Vital public investments in everything from schools to affordable college, bridges and mass transit are starved for funds. The rules have been rigged so that billionaires pay lower tax rates than their secretaries and multinationals lower rates than small businesses. Obama is accused of withdrawing from the world, even as the U.S. maintains over 700 bases across the world, and targets drone attacks in nearly a dozen nations. This limited debate must be challenged. If it is challenged, as our campaign in 1984 showed, new energy will be unleashed, the new majority can be mobilized. If there is no challenge, then too many will lose hope -and will stay home. Thirty years later, there are new, sophisticated techniques and far greater floods of money in politics. But the lessons of 1984 still hold. The country needs change. A majority can be forged for that change, but only if they are given a reason to get engaged. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

Chris Lane Wins La Marque City Council By One Vote

hristopher Lane was sworn onto La Marque City Council Monday evening following the June 21st run-off when the race resulted in 157-157 tie. After all the provisional ballots were counted Lane, a 30-yearold La Marque native and US Navy Veteran, beat the incumbent by one vote. “This is an unfathomable victory for faith in God, determined work effort and for what can happen when friends and family can come together for a better community in what is a great country,” said Lane, a recent University of Houston graduate, who credits his come from behind success to his having been knocking on voters’ doors in Galveston County that straddles 1-45 since he filed for the office in March. “I was born in La Marque. I know it could be better. African Americans throughout this city need representation. My opponent first ran for office when I was in seventh grade and I was driven that to make the difference to win this election my focus was going to need to be full time. I saw growing up and especially throughout this election in my talking with those neighbors

the locked out and left out, a Rainbow Coalition that could help change the country. Now as Barack Obama’s historic election in 2008 and re-election in 2012 showed, that Rainbow Coalition is the new majority. People of color, single women, millennials -- the socalled “Rising American Electorate” -fueled Obama’s victories. They turned out in large numbers in 2008 and 2012 and Democrats won. They stayed home in 2010 and Republicans took the majority in the House and gained governors and in state legislatures. The fundamental question in 2014 and 2016 is whether this coalition is inspired to register and vote, or whether it is discouraged and disaffected and doesn’t show up. The 1984 campaign was also a challenge to the constricted agenda of both parties. Ronald Reagan had launched the conservative era in 1980. He cut taxes on the rich, doubled the military budget in peacetime, unleashed a fierce attack on unions, slashed spending on housing and the poor, and launched a New Cold War, featuring covert wars from Nicaragua to Angola and a new nuclear arms race. Too many Democrats cowered before his charge. They embraced tax cuts and

deregulation, went AWOL in the attack on labor, competed to show that they too were muscular abroad. Reagan and Thatcher argued that there were no alternatives. We challenged that myth at home and abroad. At that time, the U.S. saw apartheid South Africa as a strategic ally and labeled Nelson Mandela a terrorist. We said South Africa was a terrorist state and demanded that Nelson Mandela be released from prison. We won. At that time, the U.S. refused to talk with the Palestinians. We argued that the only solution in the Middle East was mutual recognition and mutual security. That now is considered common sense. We opposed first the use of nuclear weapons and wasting billions on weapons that we did not need and could not use. And we were right. We argued that America’s economy grew best from the bottom up, when the rewards of growth were widely shared. We pushed to empower workers, not crush unions, to protect worker rights in trade deals, not just investor rights. We called for providing public pension funds with guarantees to invest in an Infrastructure Bank that would rebuild America and put people to work. We pushed for investment in education and for single payer health care that would provide greater opportunity and basic security for working families.

Chris Lane

whose doors I knocked on that public safety, infrastructure and economic development improvements are needed in this city of more than 15,000 people,” Lane said. A tied election was something Lane said he never expected. “That didn’t even cross my mind,” Lane said of the possibility of a tie. “But everything happened the way it was supposed to.” Incumbent James Osteen, more than twice Lane’s age at 66, was

July 3 - July 9, 2014

even more speechless. “What are the chances of that happening?” he said. In the May 10th General Election Osteen came in first place at 42.41 percent equaling 137 votes, Lane won 37.77 percent or 122 votes with third place finisher Deanna Bethea winning 19.81 percent with 64 votes. Lane said he became emboldened following May 10th to see he had pushed the older incumbent into a run-off and began working the neighborhoods where he grew up again. Galveston County Chief Deputy Clerk of Elections Bill Sargent, whose office was contracted to run the election, explained there were 26 provisional ballots cast countywide for the runoff election and three of them were cast in La Marque, meaning they likely involved the city’s council race. Provisional ballots are cast by voters whose names do not appear on the list of registered voters, or by those who do not show proper photo identification at a polling location. “Provisional ballots are kept separate from regular ballots and are only counted later when a local board deems independently the person who voted provisionally is eligible to vote.

www.StyleMagazine.com

Of the three only one was deemed legally eligible and registered to vote and that ballot was for Lane,” said Sargent. “I traveled the world serving our country in the US Navy. I learned skills there supporting ships involved in The Persian Gulf but knew I wanted to come back here to the Texas Gulf where my family always lived to use those skills to improve the lives of all of those in which I grew up. I used the Post 9/11 GI Bill to earn a university degree here and then committed to this election,” said Lane, who is also active in Galveston County politics at every level. “I believe the relationships I have with county commissioners, state representatives and senators, judges and city officials in neighboring cities throughout Galveston County will help me to best represent my area of La Marque,” Lane said.

esidents know the Southeast area of Houston as a ‘food desert’. The community has had no access to fresh fruits and vegetables. That reality will soon change thanks to a partnership with the City of Houston and the Vuong family. Mayor Annise Parker and other City of Houston officials broke ground this past Monday for a new grocery story to be constructed. Scheduled to open in 2015, the new store is being built by Pyburn’s owner John Vuong and will be called Pyburn’s Farm Fresh Foods. he dress fits like a… well, like a glove. Its seams hug your curves in the right places as the neckline draws the eye upward. Its hem swishes around your legs and makes you feel fabulous. Whoever designed it had to be thinking of someone like you to wear it. Or, as in the novel “’Til the Well Runs Dry” by Lauren Francis-Sharma, she had other things on her mind. Keeping two boys fed and keeping up with her dressmaking clients. At sixteen years old, that was about all seamstress Marcia Garcia could handle. Her mother was dead, her father was gone, she was by herself and she didn’t need a man sticking his nose into her business. But Farouk Karam was insistent. He came around, asking questions and fetching water for her. He wasn’t sure why he fell so hard – as a policeman, he could get any girl in Trinidad, but he wanted Marcia. He wanted her enough that he visited the obeah woman for some special tea, guaranteed for love. He made Marcia laugh. He made her feel special. He was there for her when the boys disappeared, and

exas Southern University was not the only alma matter of Live with Kelly and Michael host Michael Strahan to receive an invitation to participate in Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremonies. Strahan’s old high school Westbury also got invited. The 60 member band has already raised $20,000 between Houston ISD’s $15, 000 donation, $5,000 from family and friends, and each student paying $350. But that simply is not enough. The band needs about $15,000 - $17,000 more to make. the trip to cheer on Strahan and showcase some Houston. So that are requesting the Houston community dig deep and help them get to Canton. Til the Well Runs Dry he was there a year later when their daughter was born, but he left soon afterward because there was something about those boys that just didn’t add up. Eight years after Farouk left, he still hadn’t actually gone. World War II was over, Trinidad was in the midst of political unrest, he was the father of two more children – Jacqueline and Wesley – and there was another on its way. Farouk came when he needed Marcia, when another baby was born, to leave money, or because he could. And that situation might’ve continued forever, if it wasn’t for Farouk’s position on the force. It had become a job that made him uncomfortable, and there was nothing he could do about it. He couldn’t talk to his parents; they shunned him when he fell in love with Marcia. He couldn’t take the issue to his supervisor; his supervisor was part of the problem. And he couldn’t go to Marcia. She wasn’t raising his children right, and the memory of those boys festered in his mind… The Islands are calling you this summer. Sand, seas, sunshine – and plenty of drama, when you take “’Til the Well Runs Dry” with you. But drama is only half of the appeal. Because author Lauren Fran-

cis-Sharma (herself the child of Trinidadian immigrants) writes with her characters’ natural patois, we get a definite sense of place and time for this story. After awhile, it can seem almost as if you actually hear their voices, which makes them come alive. Yes, this book is a bit overdone – the plotline spun off too much for me – but the way in which its written makes that forgivable. Overall, I think this is the perfect get-away read, even if you don’t really go anywhere but in your mind. If that’s the kind of escape you want, “’Til the Well Runs Dry” is a book that’ll fit.

Robin Thicke - Paula

T

o a fault, Robin Thicke simply cannot win. He’s 37; his creative peak is instantly drawn to a Marvin Gaye record, which he flipped into a worldwide, ubiquitous smash hit single and the greatest highs of his career. His love songs, at times swollen and bare are uneven these days. The stronger issued ones, those that lifted their eyes towards both insecurity and vulnerability are found early in his catalog. What makes Paula, Thicke’s seventh album an insufferable listen isn’t how rushed it feels or that his best here is far more voyeuristic and uncomfortable. No, Paula is a plea to get his ex-wife, actress Paula Patton back and is using listeners as full on bait. There’s a history of post-breakup albums in the realm of R&B, the majority of which citing Gaye’s Here, My Dear as their blueprint, their tipping point. Here was a slice at Anna Gordy, Gaye’s estranged wife, where the singer was selfish, one-sided and bitter. It worked into his overall manifestations and turned his own tact of role reversal into a brilliant album. Usher tried this effect on 2010’s Raymond v. Raymond but was far too hyper sexualized to truly bring the point home, no matter what the concept of “Papers” tried to achieve. Paula is not a breakup record; it’s a man completely on his knees begging for his wife back.

Musically the album plays like different scenes from their lives, an uneasy glimpse to a celebrity relationship that was built long before the world even knew who either of them was. “Get Her Back”, if issued out by its lonesome would stick alongside the best Thicke songs. It floats, swimming around as the least direct thought about Patton yet the strongest one all in the same. The salsa spice of “You’re My Fantasy” feels like a put on, an attempt to be sexy but its coos and solicitation of reconciliation feel awkward. This is an empty Thicke album in all extents, airing out of dirty laundry and attempted suicides (“Black Tar Cloud”), losing one too many arguments (“Lock The Door”)

and other guilt moments. There’s a problem here. For all the stepping that he does in attempts to win Patton back, he flails about, armed with aim but little in terms of a plan to win. “Lost Without U”, the 2005 Thicke record that implored him through whispery falsetto to question himself standing without Patton (because let’s be completely honest, every Robin Thicke song has been about this woman), was his trump card. Thicke’s one trick was to sing songs about his wife and now that the secret is out, he’s unable to figure it all out. We ask our singers to be naked, stripped of their dignity so that we can transfer that balance into our own lives. With Thicke it’s sickening, a game we want no parts of yet are getting dragged into. He brings in limping instrumentations on “Living In New York City,” a James Brown tic through and through but he’s not as confident as he was in regards to similar tropes on “Blurred Lines”. The partying man from tracks like “Something Bad” is dead, wounded and unable to regroup. Did we have to be made privy to dirty business? Or even a rushed out plea for forgiveness? No. Paula hangs on the idea that every R&B singer needs a heartbreak record, without realizing it’s more whiny and suffocating than anything else.

Michelle Howard becomes Navy’s First Female Four-Star Admiral

NATIONAL By CNN

T

he U.S. Navy has promoted Vice Adm. Michelle Howard to admiral, making her the first female four-star officer in the Navy’s 236-year-history, the White House said Tuesday. Howard, who was the first African-American woman to command a Navy ship, will become vice chief of naval operations, according to her online Navy biography. “Her historic career is taking a next step today,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. Howard’s promotion comes nearly six years after Army Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody became the U.S. military’s first female four-star officer. Howard, a 1982 graduate of the Naval Academy, made history when she commanded the amphibious dock landing ship Rushmore in 1999, Earnest said.

Summertime Fine: A Fashion Tale

J

une 21st, 2014 was the official first day of summer. Immediately the masses responded by taking to social media to post this summer’s “must haves”, including popular beach wear. A growing trend, that truly skyrocketed in 2013, is in first place on the fashion scene are “fatkinis.” The creator of the sexy high-waist two-piece created so much buzz that it landed her a spot on multiple media outlets, including the Insider and world-renowned Good Morning America! The swimwear collaboration between Swimsuits for All and 25-year-old plus-size fashion blogger Gabi Gregg (better known as Gabi Fresh) took summer by storm in May 2013 when they launched the 5-piece swimsuit capsule collection including the fatkini; a two-piece bikini for plus-size women. The galaxy suit (a one-piece swimsuit) sold out in minutes, with the other fatkinis selling out within two days. Swimsuits for All wasn’t ready for such a huge hit, even telling some customers that they were not going to receive their order due to the website being unable to adjust efficiently to the volume of sales. Watching the scene unfold was as if someone poured out a bucket of water on desert land. Insta-

gram, Facebook, Tumbler, and Twitter instantly became flooded with posts and photos of happy women who finally had a 2-piece option for strutting on the beach. Women who had never worn a bathing suit without a cover up posed with confidence and happiness as they hash-tagged fatkini. Gregg (whose social media presence reaches over 500,000) stated in an interview ““I love my body. I think we should reject these fashion rules about what we are and what we are not allowed to wear ... We have to be happy with the bodies that we have right now.” One plus-size model (Crystal Eve) who wore the galaxy suit in a photo shoot revealed: “Plus size fashion has a long way to go...they feel that being a size 12/14 is the beginning of plus size and size 18/20 is the end of plus size. That’s IF they include us at all.” Gabi didn’t only sell a swimsuit she sold confidence, and she sold strength to women who are now able to say ‘beauty and health is not synonymous!’ She gave a voice to plus size women worldwide! Although Gabi Gregg did not invent the fatkini, it seems as if she opened the door for more major retail stores to follow suit. Weeks later after the popularity of the Fatkini rose Ralph Lauren revealed their first plus size model, Robyn Lawley, in her swimsuit. A couple of months later H&M revealed they would include a plus size section as well. And they did just so! The year 2014 produced the most fashionable swimsuits for plus-size women. Even Gregg came back and collaborated again with S4A for this year’s summer color trends. Additionally, there have been pictures of

www.StyleMagazine.com

flow charts floating around asking “how to tell if you are ready for summer” with the answer being if you have a body you are ready. Now this article is not saying that health isn’t important. It is simply stating for all those who think they are not “summertime fine”, or lack the “beach body”, to embrace your present beauty and remember that “everyBODY is flawless!” Fatkinis are just a start, plus size has a long way to go. However; it appears as if the fashion world is FINALLY coming around. When asked if she is going to release a clothing line, Gabi responded with “you never know.” Well if she ever decides to, she has a huge (no pun intended) amount of consumers waiting to be “fat and fabulous”! hat started out as a way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Essence Magazine and has grown over the years as a mustbe place for many across the country. Now 20 years later the Essence Festival is still going strong. For this milestone anniversary Festival executive Michelle Ebanks said the team had one goal to “make it bigger and better than ever.” Expanding from three days to four the Essence Festival is giving attendees more music, more workshops, more culture, and more excitement. Every year when planning the festival, organizers had a wish list of entertainers that they wanted. Always topping the list was Prince. For years the Grammy winning artist declined invitations. Then organizers got an amazing gift for its 10th anniversary. After years of wishing and hoping, Essence

Page 10

Festival organizers’ dreams came true when Prince accepted an invitation to perform at the largest celebration of African American music and culture. Not to be handled like any other performer, Prince called the shots on who would perform with him and how long each would be on stage. Throughout the planning organizers were kept in the dark with precious secrets being revealed the night he was to perform. Twenty years later things are still the same. And no one expected anything less. Ebanks is careful not to say too much about the highly anticipated performance of Prince. “I don’t want to say it’s going to be one way, and then they make adjustments.” What Prince has let be known is that on his night Friday, July 4th two artists will join him. One of those art-

ists is the eccentric, talented Janelle Monae, who has described Prince as her musical hero. She told Essence, “when he puts his stamp on someone it’s a special thing.” Also gracing the stage will be friend and guitarist extraordinaire Niles Rogers. Now in what capacity the two will perform is still unwraps. And whether these will be the only two performers is still unknown. With Prince one should always expect surprises. As far as Prince’s set goes that is under lock and key. Fans can be sure to hear some new music. But hopefully Prince will revisit some of his classics like “1999,” “Raspberry Beret,” and “When Doves Cry” and he performs more than just their chorus. It is anticipated that Prince will belt out “Purple Rain” since the 30th anniversary of the hit coincides with the 20th anniversa-

ry of the Essence Festival. But this is Prince so no one knows. With a career spanning over thirty years with over thirty albums, Prince has defied time with his age and music while keeping everyone on their toes. And at the prime age of 56, time is still on his side. Rest assure what ever Prince has up his sleeves the weekend will be made epic by his mere presence and fans will go crazy. If you weren’t lucky enough to win tickets to the ultimate party with a purpose or purchase your own set of tickets follow @houstonstyle. Our #TeamStyleMag street team will be all over New Orleans covering every angle of the 2014 Essence Festival. Look for updates on stylemagazine.com.

Share Your Health History

Start a New Tradition at Your Family Reunion

F

amily reunions are a great opportunity to reconnect and turn relationships into strong, eternal ties. This year, try starting a new tradition — share your health history with your family. Passing down family health history can be as important as sharing that heirloom recipe your great grandmother shared with your grandmother. Many health conditions run in the family, so knowing the health history can help you or your loved ones take the right steps to stay well and get tested if you or they are at risk. Sharing a health history means having a conversation about your health conditions or those experienced by another family member. These conversations can transform a simple update about a loved one’s wellbeing into a piece of prevention. Why is sharing a health history important? Though marked with stories and laughter, family reunions are also a perfect time to talk about important matters that affect the health of your family members. As the number of those with common ailments such as obesity, heart disease and cancer continues to rise, other major conditions should not be overlooked, especially kidney disease. According to the U.S. Renal Data System, nearly one in six African American adults (or 6.2 mil-

lion) has signs of kidney disease. There are usually no symptoms for early kidney disease, which is why it is sometimes called a “silent disease.” The two primary causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. The National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP) is encouraging relatives at family reunions to talk about the connection between diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease. The Program’s Family Reunion Health Guide can help you plan large group or one-on-one conversations about kidney disease. You do not need to be a healthcare professional or expert to start these important conversations — the guide has everything you need.

Tips for Simple Summer Travel Savings Pull the trigger. If you see a great fare, book it. All airlines selling airfare in the U.S. allow you to cancel within 24 hours without any penalties as long as you purchased a ticket at least seven days before the flight. Many airlines also let you hold a fare for a short time for a small fee. Try metasearch sites. Search for airfare on websites like Hipmunk, BookingBuddy, and SmarterTravel.com, which compare top travel sites to show the best flight or hotel at the cheapest price.

W

hether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with the entire family, there are ways to get where you’re going and enjoy your time there without spending your life savings. One of the easiest ways to save on summer travel is to take advantage of free websites and mobile apps that do the deal finding for you. Booking Airfare Get fare alerts. Take the worry out of finding the best price by signing up for fare alerts to get email notifications when the cost of your flight itinerary changes. Travel websites like Hipmunk offer the service for free.

Page 12

Five tips for starting the conversation Talking about health history at family reunions can be challenging. Having a strategy for difficult conversations can help guide the discussion and make it a meaningful and productive experience. Here are some tips for getting a one-onone conversation started at your next family reunion: Ask permission to have the conversation and try to choose a convenient time and comfortable environment. Look for a quiet, private place that is free from distractions. Acknowledge that it is not always easy to face personal health problems. Try to be supportive and listen to their concerns. Include personal stories in your health discussion. Try sharing your story on how you manage diabetes or high blood pressure to help put them at ease. Offer to go with family members to their health care provider and encourage them to bring information about kidney disease, diabetes and high blood pressure to appointments. Follow up with family members in ways that work for them. Some relatives may prefer a phone call to an email or text message. Make the kidney connection with a loved one and start a new, healthy tradition at your next family reunion. For more information, visit https:// www.facebook.com/MaketheKidneyConnection.

Finding the Perfect Place to Stay Book hotels last-minute. Hotels often offer special mobile-only rates for last-minute bookers. For example, Hipmunk’s Tonight Deals saves app users up to 60 percent on hotel rates. Try a vacation rental. Rates can be cheaper than hotels and cooking your own meals saves on eating out. Airbnb and HomeAway are popular vacation rental websites and you can see their listings alongside traditional hotels when you search through Hipmunk. Look at reviews. Sentiment-based reviews like Hipmunk’s make it faster and easier to see a hotel’s strengths and weaknesses without having to read pages of individual reviews. At a glance you’re able to see whether past hotel guests were happy with the

www.StyleMagazine.com

price of breakfast or thought the hotel was a value. Activities and Dining Pre-purchase activities. Browse activities or dining deals on sites like Groupon or LivingSocial and pre-purchase the ones you like at a significant discount. Make reservations well in advance for the dates you’ll be in town. Find last-minute dining deals. Use the Yelp app to identify local restaurants offering a deal. Just search nearby restaurants and filter by “offering a deal” to taste local flavors at a discount. Getting Around Walk it off. Use a site like Walk Score to identify and stay in areas that are walkable to avoid cab fares and public transportation costs. Try short-term car rental. If you’ll need a car on and off, try services like Zipcar or Getaround. You can borrow a car for as little as an hour so you don’t pay for it when you’re not using it. Rideshare. Uber or Lyft rates are often cheaper than cab fares and the apps are free. In addition, you pay through the apps so you never have to pull out your wallet in an unfamiliar neighborhood. For more travel tips or to explore flights and accommodations for your summer vacation, visit www.hipmunk.com. Download the Hipmunk Hotel and Flight App for free from the App Store and Google Play. obby Lobby’s founders have made it clear that any abortion and certain contraceptives are unacceptable in their eyes, yet the company’s 401(k) plan has millions of dollars invested in funds that own the companies that make birth control methods including Plan B, the so-called “morning after” drug. Like many companies, Hobby Lobby offers its employees a 401(k) plan. Employees have the option to put their retirement dollars -- and the money that Hobby Lobby contributes on their behalf -- into over a dozen different mutual funds. At least eight of those funds have been invested in companies that produce contraceptives. At least one fund also held Forest Laboratories, which makes a drug that is used to induce abortions. Hobby Lobby did not respond to CNN for an interview. For more information, visit CNN.com.

Among these recalled vehicles, GM is aware of seven crashes, eight injuries and three fatalities. The fatal crashes occurred in older model full-size sedans being recalled for inadvertent ignition key rotation. There is no conclusive evidence that the defect condition caused those crashes. This amount includes a previously disclosed $700 million charge for recalls already announced during the quarter. For more information, visit GM.com.
