n the presidential race, July is convention month. Each party selects its ticket -- the nominees for president and vice president -and the choice becomes clear. For all the noise about a Republican revolt against Donald Trump, we already know the choice we will face: Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump. This campaign has already turned nasty, but looking beyond the clamor there are some things we know. Hillary Clinton is the most experienced and prepared of the two candidates. An attorney, former first lady, senator and secretary of state, she is one of the most experienced candidates for the presidency ever. She will be ready from day one. She knows up close what it takes to be president, how to put together and run an administration.

POLITICAL By Burt

S

The Choice We Face Donald Trump is one of the least prepared candidates in memory. He has not held public office. He has little experience in foreign and national security issues. His major previous relationship with the legislators he must deal with is, as he tells us, as a donor, a businessman seeking favors. He’s amassed a fortune in business, but he seems better as a salesman than an administrator. He’s certainly had a hard time putting together a professional campaign staff or organizing a political convention. Hillary Clinton is a progressive; her candidacy builds on the progressive movements of our time. She is a lifelong champion of women and children. She supports equal rights for people, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual preference. She’s for overturning Citizens United and limiting big money in politics. She’s for reviving the Voting Rights Act and removing barriers to voting. She’ll push to raise the minimum wage, to fund our schools, to make college more affordable, to expand access to health care. She will push for public investment to rebuild our country and put people to work. She’s for raising taxes on the wealthy, cracking down on corporate tax

dodges, making Wall Street more accountable, empowering workers and curbing CEO abuses. She may not be as bold a reformer as Bernie Sanders is, but there is no doubt she is a progressive who believes in a government on the side of working people. Trump, by contrast, is a bit of an unknown, at odds with his past and his party. We know he’ll cut taxes on the rich and corporations. We know he wants to build a wall on the Mexican border. He’s run a divisive campaign, filled with racial insult and nativist appeal. He says he’s against our trade deals but offers as an alternative only that he’d get a better deal. He promises to rip up the nuclear weapons agreement with Iran, which would give the zealots in that country the license and the incentive to build nuclear weapons. He says he wants to rebuild the country, but gives us no sense about how he would pay for it, other than the infamous wall that he says Mexico will pay for. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are viewed unfavorably by large numbers of Americans, with Trump setting records in that regard. Clinton bears the burden of right-wing political attacks that go back to the early

aturday, July 16 the 96 Democratic Party Precinct Chairs (78 from Harris County and 16 from Fort Bend County) that live in State Senator Rodney Ellis’ Senate District 13 will decide who will fill the seat he has held in the state’s upper legislative body for decades. The seat became vacant after Ellis was voted on as the next Harris County Commissioner Pct. 1 to succeed El Franco Lee on this fall’s ballot. Saturday, June 25 Ellis, after 26 years in the Texas Senate, was chosen at the Communications Workers of America Union Hall in Downtown Houston in a landslide to become the Democratic nominee beating out Gene Locke, the interim Commissioner; Dwight Boykins and others. Locke in January was appointed by Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and Commissioners Jack Mormon, Steve Radack and Jack Cagle promising he did not want to run but changed his mind while doing the job during the last six months. Now State Rep. Senfronia Thompson, the second longest sitting Texas legislator having been first elected in 1972 and State Rep. Borris Miles having been elected in 2006 are joining former Houston City Controller and former At-Large Houston City Council Member Ronald Green in asking to be picked to be one of 31 state senators representing more than 800,000 Texans each in Austin.

1990s (and before that in Arkansas). Every misstep has been inflated into a scandal, every misstatement into an indictment. Trump started the campaign as a celebrity, rose through notoriety and earned his disfavor by insulting wide sectors of the American people. Despite these unfavorable polls, both won the nomination by winning the most votes in the primaries. Now we have a choice. The most experienced against the least experienced. The progressive against the conservative. Someone who seeks to bring us together against someone who has risen by tearing us apart. There is a long way to go before November. Events and the campaigns will tell us more, but the choice is already clear. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush. org. Green, Miles, Thompson

“It’s going to be a sprint,” said Miles, who at the June meeting was already aggressively handing out Borris Miles for State Senate District 13 yard signs with his familiar campaign logo on them. Signs were issued to a wide swath of Democratic Party activists, many not in Senate District 13 and/or Democratic Party Pct. Chairs. Thompson was at the event with fliers and cards. Green was telling those listening he was being asked to run and that afternoon posted in social media his announcement. Monday night Thompson traveled to Missouri City Council with State Rep. Ron Reynolds endorsing her for the post. She also touts her endorsements from Congress Members Al Green and Gene Green; fellow State Reps. Alma Allen, Garnet

Coleman, Hal Dutton, Jessica Farrar, Anna Hernandez, Hubert Vo, Armando Walle and Gene Wu, all representing areas that overlap with SD 13. Precinct chairs picking Democratic nominees for the fall ballot could still be going on further into the summer. If Thompson wins July 16, her north Houston state representative district will need a candidate picked by her district›s precinct chairs. If Miles wins, precinct chairs in his Sunnyside to Sharpstown district will pick his successor. Coleman as well as former At Large Houston City Council Member and former Police Chief C.O. Bradford considered the contest but Coleman relishes his increasing seniority in the House and Bradford said he’d have

preferred a more traditional election open to regular voters. Thompson earlier this year said she wasn’t going to give up her seat or seniority to seek the senate but said her breadth of experience in Austin would serve the senate district well. Both Thompson and Green have histories of working with wide audiences of allies while Miles takes pride in being more of a slash and burn firebrand. Thompson as well as her long legislative career is an attorney with biology and education masters degrees, law and masters in law degrees from Texas Southern University from UH. Green is an attorney with a TSU law degree and UH MBA. Miles with a criminal justice degree is a former school district police officer that has built one of Texas’ largest African American owned insurance offices. Thompson and Miles believe their extensive experience in Austin is an asset. While Green, having completed the six years by city ordinance he could as a city council member and then as the city controller, sees his not having to give up any seniority or a current seat among his selling points. Keep in the know on elections and everything political with Burt Levine. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

BOOK REVIEW By Terri

T

Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

he Word is what you crave. It’s where you find your comfort, strength, the peace you need to get through the day. Reading it is like hearing God’s voice; studying it is feeling His power, and in the new book “We Are Charleston” by Herb Frazier, Bernard Edward Powers Jr., PhD, and Marjory Wentworth, knowing it could mean offering forgiveness. There are, say the authors, two Charlestons in South Carolina. Tourists see lovely horse-drawn carriages, fine dining, and historic homes but there’s a flip-side Charleston, too: it’s where slavery began, where Jim Crow laws once ruled, and where racism is still an issue. That’s where Mother Emanuel AME Church has stood for generations, welcoming people of faith. Wednesdays are Bible study nights at Mother Emanuel, although on June 17, 2015, that was pushed back a bit for a business meeting. By 8 o’clock, however, “a dozen of the most devout parishioners” were ready for the Word of God. Exactly sixteen minutes later, “a skinny young white man” entered the door and joined the group, sitting next to the church’s pastor; the young man was a stranger there, but they welcomed him just the same. And after prayerful fellowship and Bible study, “as eyes were closed and heads were bowed” for a final benediction, he took out a gun and started shooting. But why did Dylann Roof scream racial sentiments, reload his gun five times, and kill nine strangers in a house of God? The answer, say the authors, lies in the past, aboard slave ships, on wharfs where people were once sold, and on a flag. It goes back some 200 years, to another time when that church was a “target of hate.” And yes, it lies in the story of a

HEALTH

We Are Charleston “young man who purchased a weapon to kill human beings.” But surprisingly, what resulted from that night more than a year ago wasn’t just a history lesson. It wasn’t merely grief, either. What happened in the days after that night was forgiveness, over and over and over… There is, of course, more to this story than just what happened in June 2015 in South Carolina – and that’s where I struggled with “We Are Charleston.” Herb Frazier, Bernard Edward Powers T h e r e ’s t o o m u c h Jr., PhD, and Marjory Wentworth inside this book, and it veers too much off-course. I see where the authors are trying to take readers: the book’s open and ending are about the shooting and aftermath, while the middle part consists of African American history and that of the AME church, with an attempt to tie them together. These subjects are very interesting, but the tie here is too broad and too deep; I’d have been happier with two different books. And yet, it’s easy to brush aside book-gripes when presented with a powerful message like the one you’ll see; specifically, one of forgiveness, strength, and forward-movement. That alone left me satisfied after all. And so, cautiously, with caveats, I say read this book. Skim some parts if you must, but savor its end: “We Are Charleston” could be the words to remember. with HF find their way back. HF, also known as congestive heart failure, is a chronic, progressive condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. It affects 1 in 5 people and African Americans have the highest risk of developing heart failure, and the risk of developing the condition before age 50 is also greater in African Americans. Many tend to believe heart failure is a condition that primarily affects men, but that is not the case. “Heart failure is an equal opportunity disease and as many women are likely to have this diease as men. And because it’s a disease of aging and women tend to live longer, in later years this is a disease that uniquely impacts women,” explains Clyde W. Battery Power Meets Engine Power in the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Photo By: Reginald Dominique

hether you are down for a Hybrid or not, once you experience the drive, comfort, and superior gas mileage with the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, there is no doubt your outlook may change. Dating back to the early 1960’s, the Malibu name has been known in North America for some time. Named after the City of Malibu in California, the 2016 version may be the best we have seen in a while. When I first received word that I would be reviewing a Hybrid, I knew it would be interesting, to say the least. Like many others who may not know much about Hybrid vehicles, I dove headfirst to fully understand the meaning behind the name. The first noticeable thing I realized during my week review of the Malibu Hybrid was how easily it switched from the electric motor to the 1.8-liter gasoline engine. It’s very quiet and seamless making you wonder, “Is this normal?” The second thing I noticed was the outstanding braking system. After researching, reports concluded that early hybrids suffered from a non-linear braking feel, a result of capturing the kinetic energy from the braking and storing it in the battery. The system has gotten better over the years resulting in smooth braking from first touch to final stop. This is the first year the Malibu is offered as a full hybrid. Previous models were available as a mild hybrid, where the electric motor functions as a power

booster to the gasoline powered engine. When the engine kicks on, it does so quietly and without much vibration. General Motor’s estimated fuel ratings are 48 mpg in the city, 45 mpg on the highway, and 47 mpg combined. During the weeklong review, I never had to refuel the car. Once the review was complete, there was a little less than a half of tank remaining, which was totally mind blowing. The combined MPG number beats the Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry, and Ford Fusion hybrids, and equals the combined rating of the Honda Accord hybrid. Total output from the gas engine and electric motor is 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Not to mention, the Malibu can cruise at speeds of up to 55 mph on electricity alone. Although the standard vehicle price is $27,770, our tested 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid had an M.S.R.P. of $30,735.00. A few vehicle highlights included a very sleek exterior design with progressive design cues, sweeping LED headlamps and dramatic side curves. Also, enhanced Chevrolet MyLink comes

with a standard 7-inch-diagonal color touch screen with an 8-inch system available. The OnStar with 4G LTE connectivity and a standard, built-in Wi-Fi hotspot was the icing on the cake. Safety features included ten standard air bags and teen driver warning alert (when the vehicle is traveling over predetermined speeds an alert goes to parents as well as a report to allow them to review driving reports). The driver confidence package included city-speed front automatic braking, front pedestrian braking, IntelliBeam front/rear Park assist, and side blind zone alert with lane change alert to name a few. The experience behind the wheel of this vehicle was not only fun but also informative. After learning about the different components that makes up a hybrid car, I look at them completely different now. If you are in the market for a trendy vehicle and want to save money at the gas pump while being eco-friendly, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is highly recommended. The New ‘Iron Man’ is a Black Woman

“Some of the comments online, I don’t think people even realize how racist they sound,” he said. “I’m not saying if you criticize you’re a racist, but if someone writes, ‘Why do we need Riri Williams we already have Miles [Morales, a black and Hispanic Spider-Man]?’ that’s a weird thing to say.” Marvel is well known for mixing things up when it comes to diversity, at least recently. In just the past few years, the comic company has, in addition to Williams and Morales, introduced a female Thor, an African-American Captain America and a Muslim Ms. Marvel. Bendis said he sees the evolution of Iron Man as a natural progression. “I think what’s most important is that the character is created in an organic setting,” he said. “We never had a meeting saying, ‘we need to create this character.’ It’s inspired by the world around me and not seeing that represented enough in popular culture.”

here’s a new Iron Man coming to comic books -- and it’s not a man. A black female character is taking over the suit from Tony Stark, Time is reporting. Riri Williams “is a science genius who enrolls in MIT at the age of 15” and “comes to the attention of Tony when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm,” according to the magazine. “Iron Man” writer Brian Michael Bendis told Time the inspiration for Williams came from his time spent working a few years ago on a television show in Chicago. The show did not end up airing, he said, because of the amount of violent content. “This story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life---just random street violence--and went off to college was very inspiring to me,” Bendis said. “I thought that was the most modern version of a superhero or superheroine story I had ever heard. And I sat with it for awhile until I had the right character and the right place.” Speculation that Williams was coming started a few months ago with her appearance in Invincible Iron Man Vol 2 #7. Bendis acknowledged that some fans have been less than receptive to the new character.

Brown’s granddaughter fondly remembers attending Yankees games with him. “I didn’t know how important he was until I was older,” Lisa Bodine said. “When I was younger he was just my grandfather and we hung out and that’s just what we did.” Brown does not want a “sad, dead body funeral,” his daughter said. He wanted a jazz concert held in his memory, and the family plans to honor his wish.

oscoe C. Brown Jr., a Tuskegee airman and advocate for racial equality and education, has died. He was 94. Brown, whose health has declined over the past year, died surrounded by his family Saturday at a hospital in New York, according to his daughter, Doris “Bunnie” Bodine. As a Tuskegee airman, Brown was commander of the elite African-American fighter aircraft squadron, and is credited as the first U.S. pilot to shoot down a German military jet. His experience fighting in World War II is chronicled in the 2012 film, “Red Tails.” “I like to say that the message of this is excellence overcomes prejudice, excellence overcomes obstacles,” Brown told CNN in 2012 about his feat as a Tuskegee airman. In addition to the Distinguished Flying Cross, Brown was among the Tuskegee airmen collectively honored with the Congressional Gold Medal by former President George W. Bush in 2007. New York City Mayor de Blasio ordered flags to fly at half-staff for five days in his honor. Civil rights champion For years, Brown has championed for civil rights, and dedicated his life to improving education. He received a doctorate in education from New York University and served as president of the CUNY Bronx Community College. City University of New York Chancellor James B. Milliken expressed his condolences on behalf of the university system.

“During his 17 years of exemplary service as president, Dr. Brown intensified the college’s outreach to New York City’s economic and educational institutions through partnerships with business and industry,” City University of New York Chancellor James B. Milliken said. “With his leadership, new programs were developed in high growth professions in the fields of health, technology and human services.” ‘We could do anything’ The NAACP Freedom Award and the Congressional Award for Service to the African-American Community are among the honors Brown collected during his lifetime of advocacy, service and education. “In my generation, in the generation of segregation, there were many African-Americans who knew that we could do anything that whites could do, all we wanted was the opportunity,” Brown told CNN in 2012. His family said he was always supportive and full of energy. “We learned that we had to be twice as good to get half as far but we learned not to give up and we

Murder on Camera

By Brandon Caldwell

I

t was Tuesday morning, just passed midnight in Baton Rogue, Louisiana. Alton Sterling was alive. The Fourth of July fireworks had already come and gone, the clouds had dissipated long enough for the explosions and celebrations of freedom to dance in the sky. Sterling returned to his normal post, the initial hustle plenty of black kids in Baton Rogue have seen time and time again. He stood in front of the Triple S Mart on Fairfields Avenue and North Foster Drive, holding CDs for sale. Sterling, 37, was known by the owner of the Triple S Food Mart Abdullah Muflahi. Muflahi told reporters that he had befriended Sterling and the two had known each other for six years. As is custom in Baton Rouge and Louisiana in general, Sterling carried a gun on him for protection. Especially when selling CDs into the thick of the night Alton Sterling for fear of getting robbed, or worse. social media age. The playbook for how a police A phone call from an unidentified individual alerted two on-duty department covers up its crimes lies within point police officers, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake blank type. Explain how the suspect deserved to the Triple S Food Mart. The caller stated that to be shot and killed, reveal a criminal history, Sterling had pointed his gun at someone. Once detail how there was seemingly no other option officers arrived to the scene, Sterling wasn’t to diffuse the situation. Time and time again. Sterling joins the names of Freddie Gray, questioned about any of his perceived misdeeds. Yet an encounter ensued between Sterling, Salamoni & Lake and was caught on camera, not just by Muflahi but by bystanders. In the video, Lake & Salamoni are positioned on top of Sterling, the large man’s hands behind his back. One officer notices Sterling’s gun and alerts his partner, “He’s got a gun!”

Then the gunshots began.

In one video that began circulating early Tuesday, the bystanders ducked into their car when the gunshots began. A woman is crying, shocked and in fear asking a male voice if Sterling’s still alive. He responds, “No.” The video from Muflahi’s angle shows Sterling on his back when Salamoni & Lake began firing at him. Pinned down, Sterling Philando Castile was shot twice in the chest before the two officers unloaded three more shots into his body at point-blank range. The police left Sterling to die outside the Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Rekia Triple S Food Mart. Muflahi called it a nightmare. Boyd, Laquan McDonald, Walter Scott, Aaiyana “I keep expecting to wake up,” he told reporters Stanley-Jones, Sean Bell and numerous others men and women of color unjustly killed at the following the incident. Immediately the discussion about their hands of police. You know their names verbatim, spin on the story began. Their body cameras fell, how they died and where they died because in Sterling was struggling, all signs and verbiage most cases, their deaths were publicized across the general public has gotten used to in the the country. 10

Not even hours after the death of Sterling and subsequent protests demanding answers for his murder across the country including here in Houston did another one happen; live on Facebook no less. In Falcon Heights, MN, a town less than eight miles from the state capital of Minneapolis did we learn about the death of a 32-year-old man named Philando Castile. The school teacher at a local Montessori school, Castile was riding with his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds and their four-year-old daughter before being pulled over by an officer. The officer alleged that the vehicle Castile & his girlfriend were riding in contained a broken tail light. In the 9-minute video captured by Reynolds, viewers see aftermath of the the incident. Castile is lying next to her covered in blood as she explains what happened to him. The officer still has a gun pointed at Castile moments after he shot him. “He let the officer know that he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet,” Reynolds tells the camera. “And the officer just shot him in his arm.” The officer later responds, “I told him not to reach for it! I told him to get his hand off it!” “You told him to get his ID, sir,” Reynolds tells him with a rather calm voice. “He was just getting his license and registration.” The video itself is heartbreaking enough as their four-year-old daughter who sat in the backseat is overheard telling her mother that it’s going to be fine. Even though later on in life she’ll have a “The Talk” about dealing with police officers. At the end of the video, both Castile’s girlfriend and the four-year-old are placed in handcuffs. The layers that go beyond the deaths of Sterling and Castile have been brought up for generations. Of how black men are taught to work with law enforcement should they be approached. How to comply with everything the officer says unless the worst may occur. There are hundreds, if not thousands of stories of black men & women who will admit their heart rates sped up when seeing a police cruiser behind them and hoping that the best resolution is either a ticket or a warning. Compliance should be the normal, not the only weapon against potential death by a police firing squad. Both of their deaths, especially the way they were captured brings forth memories of lynchings during the Jim Crow South. How the deaths of Jesse Washington in Waco & Claude Neal in Florida not only turned lynchings into

social gatherings but also how their mutilated bodies were transformed into stamps and photos to be sold and commemorated. Minorities do not believe that video cameras alone are a solution to the decade long problem of police brutality, but it’s giving a face to something spoken aloud for a long time. In some ways, had Diamond Reynolds not captured the aftermath of Castile’s shooting, she too and maybe even her child could have lost their lives as well. But with Baton Rouge and Louisiana in particular - Sterling’s death is nothing new in the name of police brutality and a particular double standard in regards to law enforcement and the citizens they’re sworn to protect. In April of this year, a video surfaced of a Baton Rouge police officer repeatedly punching a teenager in the back of the head after pinning him on the ground. In 2014, a 22-year veteran of the BRPD resigned after racially explicit text messages sent by him were discovered. In March of this year, a New Orleans man won a federal police brutality case against two Baton Rouge police officers after officers

stomped and knocked out his teeth during a 2014 drug raid. The Baton Rogue Police Department’s Internal Affairs division investigated over 114 officer complaints in 2014, 35 of those sitting as use of force complaints. None of those 35 investigations were sustained by the end of 2014. In 2011, four Baton Rouge police officers shot and killed a man after he refused to pull over for a traffic violation. In 2013, a Baton Rouge officer shot and killed a man following a car chase. The protections presented to the police in the state of Louisiana were brought into question this past may when Governor John Bel Edwards signed into law, the Blue Lives Matter act. The act expands the national hate crime statue into coverage for members of public safety such as police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel. A rush of Blue Lives Matters style bills were drawn up in the wake of the killings of Darren Goforth here in Houston and two officer-related slayings in New York last December. Louisiana is the lone state to pass a measure like Blue Lives Matter, essentially empowering police officers even more with impunity. In Louisiana in particular, officers can wait up until 30 days

to speak to superiors in regards to a case under provisions underlined in the Louisiana Police Bill of Rights. “The police employee or law enforcement officer shall be granted up to thirty days to secure such representation,” the order states. “during which time all questioning shall be suspended.” Baton Rouge police officers, a force comprised of 77% white officers in a predominantly black town (63%) have not only shown a history of being above the grade of the law but excessive in promoting that. With the death of a 37-year-old black man now the loudest and most visceral promotion. Alton Sterling was the local CD man, a troubled man who still brought joy to the area merely by sharing music. Philando Castile was riding with his girlfriend and their child, a school teacher with a clean record who educated more than he ever threatened. And hours after America celebrated its freedom, they lost theirs. In cold blood.

Eddie V’s Puts Happy Back in Happy Hour By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

W

e are in the throes of a long hot Houston summer, and relaxing while cooling off makes the top spot on a lot of our to-do lists, followed by lighter meals and refreshing cocktails. At Eddie V’s located at 2800 Kirby, their Happy Hour menu is creating a lot of buzz with their delectable sliders, mini-tacos, signature drinks, live music and decadent desserts. On a recent visit after a long day at work, my guest and I sat down and experienced the impeccable service, courteous and attentive staff while enjoying a selection of savory bites from the kitchen at Eddie V’s. We started with one signature cocktail each, specifically, “The Real McCoy,“ which is made with 3-year aged Silver Real McCoy Rum, grapefruit and fresh lime. First of all, I feel strongly that this is the “drink” I’ve been looking for; I wanted six of them, but I slowly slipped on one tasty glass full. It was light, refreshing; the citrus gave this libation an excellent crisp finish in my opinion. While we enjoyed our drinks, the first appetizer arrived, which was the Lobster and Crab Wontons. They were lightly battered, fried, and served with a small side dish of spicy red pepper jelly. The lobster and crab meat tasted fresh; the red pepper jelly complimented the sweetness of the shellfish. Furthermore, while we made the crispy bites of seafood disappear, the Carpetbagger Oysters arrived. They were served fried with seared tender loin and blue cheese. This was a clever combination of textures, paired with a sharp salty flavor that was balanced after clearing the palate. After finishing off the seafood bites, the Beef Banh Mi Sliders made an appearance on our table. This was a delectable pair of marinated filets, pickled cucumbers and a variety of stir-fried vegetables. Lightly toasted bread, tender meat, and crunchy vegetation made a small bite very filling. Therefore, when one is quite full there in nothing left to do but to try the Blackened Fish Tacos, which are made with “house-made tortillas, micro greens, and roasted corn pico.” Our mouths were quite pleased with this dish, the flavors of the fish and vegetables paired well on this savory plate. Finally, we ended our evening with a cup of house coffee and dessert. The Hot Bananas Foster Butter Cake and Butter Pecan Ice Cream were more than enough for two people, sweet and decadent, but combined well with the robust taste of the java. he weather is warm and school is out, but learning experiences shouldn’t end there. The summer months can provide plenty of opportunities to continue a child’s advancement through different activities and programs. According to a University of MissouriColumbia study, students can lose up to three months of what they learned during the school year over summer break. To help avoid that loss of knowledge, here are some helpful brain-boosting activities to keep your child’s mind sharp this summer.

A Summer of Learning involved. Look for art and craft programs at your local library, such as an origami class or doodling session, for additional ways to jog your child’s brain.

Because science is everywhere, it’s easy to make every day a learning experience that inspires curiosity for your little one. Something as simple as bird-watching or taking a walk around the neighborhood can give your child a chance to Books for bonding view nature in action. Super summer camps One way to tie together fun and learning is to enroll your child in a summer camp. Whether the camp is down the road or across the country, children can gain valuable life lessons – such as independence, social skills, resiliency and teamwork – all while staying physically active. A little technology-free time wouldn’t hurt, either. Try seeking out a camp that doesn’t allow cellphones or electronic devices to ensure your child gets the most out of his or her outdoor experience. 6 Tips to Stop the Summer Slide Learning shouldn’t stop just because school is out. Stepping too far away from the books can result in learning loss. However, research shows that encouraging kids to read for 20 minutes a day over the summer can help prevent the summer slide. The key is finding ways to make reading fun, combining education and entertainment, said Kate DiCamillo, a two-time Newbery Medal Award-winning author and the 2016 Collaborative Summer Library Program National Summer Reading Champion. “Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty, but rather as a gift that emphasizes the fun of opening a new book and celebrating the satisfaction that comes from reading another story,” said DiCamillo, who is the 2016-17 Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program literary partner. Summer schedules can get busy, but with a little creativity it’s easy to fit in those 20 minutes, even when you have other plans. Take a book. The best way to get your kids reading is to have books available, so take them with you, whether it’s in the car, at the beach or waiting at the doctor’s office. Summer recharge. Plan ahead for a fun reading-related trip during the summer to reignite the love of books and reward kids for reading. It doesn’t have to be fancy; the trip could simply be camping like a character in a book. Explore hobbies. Reading is more fun when the subject matter involves your favorite things. Look for books that match your kids’ personal interests. Pen pals. Work with other parents to set up pen pals and have kids write letters back and forth to practice their reading and writing skills. Take direction. Ask kids to read the directions for a classic summer project, like setting up a tent or making a picnic snack. Whether they are directing you or doing it themselves, reading and understanding directions builds important skills. Tap into tech time. If you’re committed to limiting screen time for the summer, consider a compromise that lets kids use devices for productive activities, such as reading e-books. The sooner you start a habit of reading every day, the better your child will be prepared when school – and the annual BOOK IT! Program – kicks off again. LEED-certified recreation facility, basketball gym, public artwork, small pavilions, a baseball field and more. The renovations are expected to act as a development catalyst for this part of Third Ward. Memorial Park Master Plan - Ongoing through 2025 A new master plan could bring more than $200 million in renovations to Houston’s largest park. The 1,500-acre Memorial Park near the Galleria district will soon see an update to its 3-mile jogging trail. But more long term plans call for a land bridge over Memorial Drive, an indoor swimming pool, additional bike and pedestrian trails and a rugby pitch, just to name a few elements. Once it’s approved, the master plan could take up to 10 years to completely realize. Houston Botanic Garden - Ongoing In early 2015, the Houston City Council approved a contract with the nonprofit group “Houston Botanic Garden” to take over an aging golf course in Southeast Houston. The group has until the end of 2017 to raise $20 million that will allow them to take control of the property and begin developing a major botanic garden on the site. Altogether, the first phase of the project is expected to cost $40 million and take several years to construct. The group continues to fundraise and is in the process of hiring a firm to develop a master plan for the site. Marriott Marquis - Opening Fall 2016 RIDA Development Corp. broke ground in April 2014 on the 1,000-room Marriott Marquis that will rise adjacent to the GRB Convention Center. The 680,000-square-foot mixed-use tower will include a luxury 250-room hotel along with office space and 22 apartment units. Though the flag for the hotel component of the project has not yet been chosen, it’s expected to be one of the most luxurious property’s in town once complete in late 2017. Biggio’s - Opening November 2016 named after Houston baseball legend Craig Biggio, Biggio’s will be a part of the new Marriott Marquis hotel and convention district downtown. The upscale sports bar plans on offering high quality steaks, burgers, and wings as well as local craft beers, wines, and cocktails. A.D.
