hicago is one of America’s greatest cities. Yet many of its residents live in terror in what is virtually a war zone. When a demented killer slayed 49 in a gun rampage in Orlando, Fla., there was national attention. Presidential candidates called for escalating the fight against the Islamic State in the Middle East, even though the killer seems to be a homegrown terrorist. But in Chicago, 404 have died in gun violence this year. According to the Congressional Research Service, the murder rate averaged 16.0 per 100,000 a year from 2010-2014. That is nearly four times the national average of 4.6 per 100,000 and nearly three times the Illinois state average (5.8). These killings are not randomly d i st ributed. Af r ica n-Americ ans constitute about one-third of Chicago’s residents, but they account for 80 percent of its murder victims.

hawn Thierry beat Sheila Jackson Lee’s daughter Erica Lee Carter by two votes Saturday, August 6th, to succeed State Rep. Borris Miles and represent Houston’s House District 146. Miles won the Texas rep seat in 2006 by beating Al Edwards in a heated run-off following Edwards’ having had the seat for nearly 30 years. Thierry will take over representing the district stretches across the city›s southeast and southwest sides, from Sunnyside to Sharpstown, in January 2017. “Thank you Texas House District 146 Precinct Chairs. This is my birthday. I will make you proud!” Thierry, a solo practice attorney, southwest Houston native and single mom gushed while hugging her young daughter Klaire, jumping for joy and holding close family, friends and supporters. Thierry couldn’t hold back tears after the 24 votes were counted in the run-off that resulted in her win at the Sunnyside Multi-Service Center by two votes for the seat Miles is vacating to become the State Senator from District 13 left vacant by Rodney Ellis. In

Chicago Blues: How Abject Poverty Creates Desperation In a World-Class City The killings are concentrated in endangered communities, communities burdened with abject poverty and deplorable conditions. Desperation and murder are segregated in Chicago. In West Garfield Park, the average per capita income is $10,951. More than 40 percent of the residents live below the poverty line, with an unemployment rate greater than 25 percent. In Englewood, the average per capita household income is $11,993. Forty-two percent of households live below the poverty line, with an unemployment rate over 21 percent. In Fuller Park, per capita household income is $9,016, with a majority -- 55.5 percent -- of households living below the poverty line. The unemployment rate is 40 percent. Washington Park, North Lawndale, Austin, Greater Grand Crossing, East Garfield Park ... the list goes on. During the height of the Great Depression, the unemployment rate hovered at roughly 20 percent. These neighborhoods are suffering levels twice that, now six years into the supposed recovery. These are disaster zones in a supposedly world-class city. They look like they are under siege, and to some extent they are. Drugs and guns, violence and despair mark lives condemned to live in these zones. The war in Iraq -- one the Bush
administration chose to launch -- will end up costing us more than $3 trillion. And of course, the wars go on -- in Afghanistan, in Syria, in Iraq, in Yemen, and now the U.S. is beginning to bomb Libya. But the right now disaster zones in Chicago are ignored. The everyday violence is decried but nothing is done. The poverty is regretted but there is no plan to attack it. In fact, national policy does more to expand the divide between endangered communities and affluent ones, between those living in the disaster zone and those living uptown. A new report by the Institute for Policy Studies and the Center for Enterprise Development details the growing racial wealth gap in America. They find that without a drastic change in policy, by 2043, when people of color are projected to account for more than half of the U.S. population, the racial wealth divide between white households and African-American and Latino households will have doubled from about $500,000 in 2013 to more than $1 million. The gap reflects the impact of historic inequities -- from federally sanctioned housing discrimination to private redlining -- but its expansion is fueled in part by tax policies that aid the highest earners while providing the lowest income families with virtually nothing.
Over the past 20 years alone, the report finds, the federal government spent more than $8 trillion through tax programs to assist families in building long-term wealth, including saving for retirement, purchasing a home, starting a business or paying for college. But the impact of these expenditures has been “upside down.” With typical millionaires pocketing about $145,000 in public tax benefits each year to increase their wealth while working families receive a total of $174 on average. More of the same won’t help. Adding benefits to the wealthy few -- like Donald Trump’s call to end the estate tax -- will add to the inequity and contribute to the despair. If nothing changes, the desperate zones will get worse. Surely this crisis is worthy of debate in the presidential campaign, and action from the White House and Congress. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. Follow him on Twitter @RevJJackson.
Thierry Snatches Miles’ State Rep. Seat January 2017, Ellis will succeed Pct. 1 Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee who died just after New Year’s last January 3rd. “I am HD 146. I grew up going to elementary school here and then what is now Welch Middle School and Westbury High School and taking my grandmother to programs at this Sunnyside Multi-Service Center,” said Thierry, 47, who went on to earn her BA from Washington DC’ s Howard University and her law degree from Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall. She won the Democratic Primary for District Judge countywide in 2010, lost the general election in November 2010 and last month lost a vote from the county’s Democrat Pct. Chairs county-wide for a new Harris County district judge bench. This time she won. “I know you. I know you know me,” said Thierry, who cited her having served as a volunteer, mentor and speaker with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Girls at Risk at Westbury High School, JFK Elementary School and Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church as reasons on her mailer handed to the 100 or so that crowded the auditorium as to

why she should be chosen over Harris County Board of Education Trustee Lee Carter and retired Willowridge High School teacher Larry Blackmon, who has run multiple times for Fort Bend County Commissioner and for Houston City Council.. Lee Carter brought light blue balloons, disc jockey music, hot fried fish and biscuits to the precincts chairs to coax them to vote for her along with her mother, father and an army of campaign consultants. Self-conscious that it looked like she wanted to be a state representative because her mother is a U.S. Representative, she said in her speech that her legacy is her memory of her grandfathers who fought as patriotic Tuskegee Airman in WW II. Lee Carter also said as an elected

Democratic Harris County Department of Education Board Member she has fought State Senator Paul Bettencourt and State Rep. Debbie Riddle to keep the board in existence. She added that she would be able to continue to fight for the district in which she showed on her handouts has a per household income considerably less than Texas as a whole. After one round of voting by raising hands, Thierry had 12 votes, Lee Carter 11 and Blackmon one. Three of the elected precinct chairs said they had hospital emergencies to attend but if they come they were for Lee Carter. This led to an immediate runoff between Thierry and Carter with a request for a change of voting procedure. Instead of raising hands, precinct chairs stood in line next to their candidate of choice. This time Thierry beat Carter by two votes. Much of Thierry’s cries to why she should win were based on her theory she could fight the most for change “against the Republican assault of schools and civil rights.” Keep in the know on Houston and everything political with Burt Levine. Teach Kids to Manage Their Health Care
Family Features
Tips for parents of college-age students
F
or parents with college-age children, there’s a fairly standard set of basics that helps ensure their children are ready to tackle the world with some degree of independence. But beyond school supplies, housing, food and transportation, one important consideration remains: health care. As a parent, ensuring your young adult is equipped to take charge of his own health can be a daunting task. That’s why it’s important to have a conversation with your college students about their local health service options before the need arises. Together you can do some research and discuss the answers to these questions: What is your health coverage? Take time to brush up on (or introduce your child) to your family’s health insurance policy and understand how your policy covers various facilities. This is an opportunity to teach about co-pays and deductibles, and what it means when a physician or facility is considered in-network and out-of-network. Do you already pay to use the student health center? In some cases, student fees include access to the campus student health center and your separate health insurance may not be necessary. However, it’s important to understand what the student fee covers and where there may be gaps, such as dental care.
6
Aug 11 - Aug 17, 2016
What are the local options for health care? You’ll rest easier with the assurance that the medical care available to your students is of the highest quality. Many colleges and universities take the extra step of achieving accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), the nation’s leading accreditor of student health services, to affirm that the care they provide is at nationally recognized standards. You can find accredited organizations at aaahc.org or inquire about accreditation at your university medical center. Where is the student center located? Encourage your student to set up a well appointment at the student health clinic to get a file started. Not only will this ensure your child can find the center when need arises, having an established patient profile cuts down on paperwork when there’s an emergent health concern. This is particularly helpful for students with medical issues or restrictions because they can be logged in advance for easy recall. Which other medical practitioners are in the area? There may be any number of reasons your student needs to be seen off campus, so it’s a smart idea to look for AAAHC accreditation when trying to assess the quality of nearby health care alternatives. Make a short list with office hours and phone numbers for future reference.
www.StyleMagazine.com
Where is the best local hospital? Devise an emergency plan for urgent needs and be sure your student knows how to get to the closest urgent care center and hospital, as well as when to use each one. If possible, visit the facilities in person so your child can get familiar with the facility and learn where to go and how to check in without the pressure of a crisis situation. By approaching the topic of your college student’s health care together, you can help ensure your child has the information necessary to begin managing personal care. In the process, you can also be assured that you’re identifying health centers that share your commitment to the very best care for both the mind and body of your student. ick, pick, pick. That’s how you get to success these days. A little win here, a victory there, a couple losses, four steps ahead and two back. So many times, you’ve felt this close to the prize, only to have to start over again. Now read the new book “212: The Extra Degree” by Sam Parker and Mac Anderson, and pick another way to fight. Memes on social media and billboards have long reminded you of one basic truth: it’s the little things that matter. And if you don’t believe it, consider the mighty steam engine: at 211 degrees, water is just water - but heat it by only one degree and water can move that steam engine. That analogy might describe your career. Success, personally, in business, community, and relationships might be bubbling just beneath the surface at 211 degrees, waiting for you to turn it up a notch. What you want may be millimeters away, but you’ll never know unless you give it a single degrees’ worth of effort. Imagine how many opportunities you’ve missed because you quit before you gave that extra degree, that extra mile. Now imagine how much money you’ve left on the table; in fact, say the authors, in many cases, the person who put forth extra effort to win came away with many times what the runner-up received. It happens in golf, in NASCAR, and in horse racing. Even in the Olympics, there can be fractions of a second between getting gold and getting nothing. Finding your personal 212 degrees may be easier than you think. Put your phone away and engage with the

people in front of you. Invest in your children; give them something to aspire to. Improve your career by adding a few minutes to your workday for professional development. Spend one hour each day studying something that fascinates you. Stop hitting the snooze button in the morning. Make one extra sales call. Encourage one employee or co-worker. And finally, add the words “and then some…” to your business vocabulary. Do what you can, and then some, and you’ll be surprised at what can be accomplished. It’s obvious merely by picking this book up that it’s not going to take much time to read. Page through it, and you’ll see that it’ll take even less time to finish than you initially thought. Yes, “212: The Extra Degree” is thin, in more ways than one. Toward the beginning of their book, authors Sam Parker and Mac Anderson say that their steamengine visual is so simple and evocative that you don’t even have to read any further. That may be advice to heed; if you do go forth, though, you’ll find a mishmash of quotations, half-thoughts, questionablyrelevant tales, and pages of stats. I think that if you want a quick idea to present during a staff meeting, you can all take turns reading this new edition of “212: The Extra Degree” aloud in about an hour. If you want something with more meat, though, pick another book. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Higher BMI Increases Diabetes Risk But Not Heart Attacks, Twin Study Finds By American Heart Association News
When it comes to entertainment, Miller Outdoor Theatre is a real breath of fresh air.
B
eing overweight is less likely to cause a heart attack or kill you than it is to increase your risk of diabetes, according to a new study of identical twins. Researchers used a nationwide Swedish twin registry to find twin pairs with identical DNA but different body mass indexes, or BMIs. While conventional medical wisdom has long suggested that heavier people are more likely to have premature heart attacks than lean people, the new study suggests otherwise. The research, published online Monday by JAMA Internal Medicine, followed more than 4,000 genetically identical twin pairs with differing BMIs from March 1998 to January 2003, and followed up with them through 2013. The study compared the risk of heart attack, death and Type 2 diabetes. “The fatter twin actually had a lower risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) or death, although the risk of diabetes was higher,” said the lead researcher of the study, Peter Nordström, Ph.D., of the Umeå University in Sweden. “After adjusting for genetic factors, obesity does not seem to be associated with cardiovascular disease or death, at least not to an increased risk,” Nordström said. The study reported 203 heart attacks (5 percent) and 550 deaths (13.6 percent) among the heavier twins, who had an average BMI of 25.9. But the leaner twins, with an average BMI of 23.9, had slightly higher numbers, with 209 heart attacks (5.2 percent) and 633 deaths (15.6 percent). Even twins who had a BMI of 30 or higher – the threshold to be considered obese – still didn’t have a greater risk of heart attack or death than the leaner twin. Yet when it came to Type 2 diabetes, the heavier twins did have a greater risk, leading investigators to conclude “lifestyle interventions to reduce obesity may be more effective in reducing the risk of diabetes than the risk of cardiovascular disease or death.” “This study has important clinical implications,” wrote David J. Davidson, M.D., of NorthShore University HealthSystem, and the University of Chicago’s Michael H. Davidson, M.D., in an editorial accompanying the study. “The findings confirm the causal link between obesity and diabetes, which is a growing epidemic throughout the world. Therefore, weight reduction should remain the cornerstone for the prevention of diabetes.” Even so, they wrote, the study has some important limitations. Waist size — a better indicator of whether someone is “metabolically obese” despite having a normal BMI — was not measured, and the 12-year follow-up period may not have been long enough for the higher diabetes rate among the heavier twins to result in more cases of heart disease. Although the Swedish study suggests losing weight may not reduce the chances of a heart attack, it reinforces previous research that has found smoking is bad for the heart — no matter your weight. The twin who smoked had higher odds of both heart attacks and death. While Nordström would like to see more studies conducted to clarify the link between weight, heart disease and diabetes, he said the takeaway from the current findings is that quitting smoking is the best way for people to improve their heart health. “Stopping smoking is for sure the best and most important advice, based on this and all previous research,” Nordström said.

Dr. Austin Lane Making Defensive Moves for TSU’s Offensive Game for 2016-2017
Lane
A
s the new president of Texas Southern University, Dr. Austin Lane has his guard up. He is blocking the negativity that has come to be associated with the historically Black university dealing with low graduation rates, dwelling school spirit, campus violence and other issues to change the script to tell the positive stories of TSU. “We have a lot of people outside of Texas Southern University that have formed a certain opinion or stereotype of this university and I don’t know if they have done that in the most unbiased way. It puts us in the position where we have to play more defense than offense. And I want us to play some offense,” said Dr. Lane. Offense in terms where the headlines of TSU deal with the good works surrounding the students, faculty, staff, alumni and partnerships with the community. In order for the headlines to change, Dr. Lane knows the culture of TSU has to change. Thinking in terms of 30, 60, 90, and 180 day plans, Dr. Lane has a vision that will help transform the perception of the university in the city of Houston and nationwide by focusing on students and changing the school’s weaknesses to make them their strengths. Spend any amount of time the New Jersey native and you will learn one thing right away. Dr. Lane has an abundance of love for students. He is willing to do just about anything if it meant that one of his students could succeed. The result of success of a struggling student himself, Dr. Lane can sympathies with student’s struggle since he battle many of the same battles that they face today. He was one of the most grateful college freshman at Langston University simply because the school gave him a chance. Dr. Lane was not the ideal college applicant since he had a low GPA 10

and low standardized test scores. But instead of the door being closed on him, it was opened. Texas Southern is that kind of school that opens doors for students. Having only been on the job for 50 days, Dr. Lane has already implemented a program to help students like he was in the Summer of Success program. Two hundred eighty-nine students received conditional acceptance to TSU for the fall 2016 semester. These students are from various background and places but all have the commonality that they didn’t quit make the mark. TSU is holding on to them to prepare them for college. Each student is required to take one college level course and one remedial course in the area of math, reading or writing. If the student’s GPA is 2.0 or higher by the end of the summer they will be admitted to TSU in the fall. Upon which they will receive further support in the form of someone will check on them if they are missing class or if they are not making the grades by midterm. Giving students a chance to prove themselves will help students succeed but will also be a win for TSU with an increase in enrollment, another goal this school year. Ten thousand applicants were collected last fall. Half were accepted to TSU. This year 12,000 applied and half were accepted. The other half were not college ready. Programs like the Summer of Success changes that reality for students. Dr. Lane emphasize the difference in this program is that it focuses on more than just remedial courses and lets students take an actual college course. Holding on to this idea of preparing students to be college ready, Dr. Lane wants to take this concept to various school districts to get www.StyleMagazine.com
students college ready while they are still in high school by working in partnerships with area school districts. His sights are set with meeting with new HoustonISD Superintendtent once he is officially on the job to create sort of a pipeline feeder pattern. After students matriculate through the various schools of HoustonISD they would make the natural transition of furthering their educational careers at Texas Southern. Once students become part of the TSU family the goal is to focus them on graduating from school. “We love but we not in love with you. You got to leave,” joked Dr. Lane. His goals to ensure students graduate is to eliminate those hurdles that students have. One being finances. “The myth is that students fail out of school,” said Dr. Lane. He says myth because he knows sometimes students don’t fail out but they stop out. They stop going to school because they don’t have the funds, not that they didn’t make the grades. Through partnerships with the community and businesses he hopes to gain paid internships for students starting their freshman year to not just give the experience of working in their chosen field but income to stay in school. Dr. Lane is still in the learning stages of his presidency. He is listening and learning everything he can about what is right with TSU and what needs work. He has built an entire tour around it, the Listen and Learn Tour. Dr. Lane has planned meetings with students, faculty, staff, alums, the community, and partners to ask the different groups two questions – 1) Where do you see TSU today/tomorrow? and 2) What do we need to work? After listening and learning what all have say, he will prioritize and tackle the issues and give updates on the progress. “We have to know the challenges. We have to know the obstacles, the barriers. Then we got to set the bar. We are open to criticism in these meetings. I got thick skin,” said a stern Dr. Lane. He is making the faculty and staff have thick skin to by holding them accountable. Everyone has to be one of five areas that Dr. Lane is focused on. Those areas are: 1. Student Success 2. Academic Quality and Research 3. Culture 4. Funding 5. Partnerships Focusing in on these areas are the keys to building a better, more productive Texas Southern University. Keep up with the transformation of TSU under Dr. Lane’s leadership at www.tsu.edu.

Conservative Latino Religious Groups Make Big Push to End Death Penalty Fox News Latino
A
growing number of conservative Latino religious groups are beginning to shift their position on capital punishment, due in large part to a belief among them that it disproportionately affects minorities. According to the latest figures from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Latinos represent a larger portion of those on death row than they did in the past. In June, the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of 40 prominent Latino organizations, joined several bipartisan groups calling for the end to the death penalty, saying that Latinos are “directly affected by its injustices.” This follows Pope Francis asking Congress to abolish the death penalty. Speaking at Q&A at the Television Critics Association, Geller noted that the network is “definitely less diverse this year than we were last year” in terms of lead actors and actresses. CBS – as well as other major television networks – has been under great scrutiny for presenting a new fall schedule that lacks virtually any Latino and black actors in leading roles. Its three new high-profile comedies star all white men. While Geller recognized several times that the network needs to do better, he emphasized that there are 11 non-white leads that have been added for the upcoming fall season.

Delta Air Lines Anticipating a Return to ‘Normal’ Operations After Global Outage ABC News
D
e l t a A i r Lines said it’s expecting to return to “normal” operations today, two days after a computer outage grounded its planes and left passengers stranded around the globe. Delta has canceled hundreds of flights, and hundreds more have been delayed since a loss of power Monday morning in Atlanta that affected the airline’s computer systems and operations worldwide. Delta is providing $200 in travel vouchers to all its customers who experienced a delay of more than three hours or a canceled flight on Monday or Tuesday as a result of the systemwide outage. The airline has also offered all customers a change fee waiver, regardless of whether their flights were affected, but passengers must hold tickets that included a flight on Aug. 8 through 11. Tickets must be reissued and new travel must begin no later than Aug. 21.
