ow it is Milwaukee. On Saturday, a car with two African-American men was stopped for “suspicion.” The men fled, the policeman pursued, and the driver, reportedly armed, was shot and killed. And Milwaukee exploded. Angry crowds confronted police, set fires, threw rocks. At least half-dozen businesses -- including a grocery store, a gas station and an auto parts shop -were robbed or destroyed. The Saturday shooting was part of a weekend filled with violence in Milwaukee. Five people were shot and killed overnight Friday. Milwaukee law mandates an investigation of any police shooting. Immediately, focus goes to the harsh relations between police and the community. But to understand the reaction to the shooting, it is necessary to go much deeper. This city is “a powder keg,” Alderman Khalif Rainey told The Washington Post. “This entire

POLITICAL

tate Rep. Jarvis Johnson is angry and fearful of what could come from the Campus Carry Law that is welcoming college students as they start or come back to school this month. “I’m concerned as a parent, an educator and now legislator that campus carry puts all our college students, their teachers and the faculty on their campuses in harm’s way,” said Johnson, who won an early May Special Election to complete now Mayor Sylvester Turner’s current term in the Legislature and later won a run-off to succeed Turner in the Texas House. “The 84th Session of the Texas Legislature made it legal starting this month to carry firearms on college campuses in classrooms, dormitories and libraries despite the chilling police calls to me and from other law enforcement professionals, parents, teachers and other higher education staff and especially students on the dangers this law presents,” the former city council member from the north side of Houston said.

community has sat back and witnessed how Milwaukee, Wis., has become the worst place to live for AfricanAmericans in the entire country. Now this is a warning cry. ... Do we continue -- continue with the inequities, the injustice, the unemployment, the undereducation...? The black people of Milwaukee are tired. They’re tired of living under this oppression. This is their existence. This is their life. This is the life of their children.” An exaggeration? An excuse for rioters? Inflated rhetoric? Consider Milwaukee’s stark realities. Milwaukee is the most segregated city in the United States. Black household income is the third lowest in the U.S. Its black poverty rate is the highest in the US. These are figures presented in a haunting and damning 2015 report, “The Shame of Milwaukee: Race, Segregation and Inequality,” by Marc V. Levine of the University of WisconsinMilwaukee. The data show a black population segregated into neighborhoods of concentrated poverty with declining prospects. Real black household income in 1979 was $39,105; in 2013 it was $27,438, a foul decline of nearly 30 percent. Household income for all races in Milwaukee has declined over the course of this century, but far worse for blacks and Hispanics than whites. Nearly 40 percent of AfricanAmericans are in poverty, up from 27 percent in 1969. Nearly 40 percent of African-Americans in the core working

age (25-54) are unemployed. This is in stunning contrast to the 15.2 percent black unemployment rate in 1970. For males aged 20-24, the beginning of a work life, over two-thirds of blacks are unemployed -- 68.4 percent -- a staggering increase from 25.3 percent in 1970. Schools are doubly segregated by race and by poverty. Seventy-one percent of black students attend “hypersegregated schools” -- those in which at least 9 of 10 students are minority. Nearly half of all black students go to schools with 90 percent poverty rates. In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King launched the modern civil rights movement in Birmingham, Ala., saying, “Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. I am in Birmingham because injustice is here.” Well, the injustice is worse in modern Milwaukee than it was in segregated Birmingham. Black poverty, unemployment and impoverished neighborhoods are all worse. The percentage of blacks attending hypersegregated schools in today’s Milwaukee is far worse than the Jim Crow schools of Birmingham (71 percent to 56 percent). This is, as Alderman Rainey stated, a powder keg. Police are tasked with “keeping order.” That is like trying to stop a seething volcano from exploding by suppressing the gases coming out the top. Even doing that skillfully won’t work. Milwaukee is not the worst.

Black income has plummeted more in Cleveland and Detroit. School segregation is worse in New York and Chicago. Violence stalks the mean streets of impoverished urban neighborhoods across the country. And this obscene injustice gets worse with no action and little notice. The poor, the New York Times reports, are barely mentioned by either presidential candidate. And they are largely ignored by the media. On Saturday and Sunday, riots occurred in Milwaukee, a major American city. That didn’t make front page of the Monday New York Times, which led with stories above the fold about a Trump adviser, liberal worries about Hillary Clinton and malaria in Venezuela. In Birmingham, Dr. King’s cry against the injustice of segregation touched the conscience of concerned citizens across the country. Will anyone hear the cry of the north side of Milwaukee, or the south side of Chicago? Or will our cities have to explode before action replaces neglect? You can write to the Rev. Rep. Johnson Slams New Campus Carry Law

The Shame of Milwaukee

“I resist this law as I see as a father and family member of public educators that having lethal weapons carried by civilians on campus does not make us safer but puts us in danger. We must re-visit this legislation in the next session because it is our trained and paid police officers that I believe should be carrying on our campuses for our children to focus on their learning,” he said. “ T h e Te x a s a n d U . S . Constitution is sacred to me and especially the Second Amendment that provides for persons to protect themselves, their families, their values and their valuables. I am a Texas Concealed Hand Gun Licensed citizen and as a Texan and American I value the history guns have in this state and country but each individual especially those just entering adulthood should not be strapped at school with weapons or the life and death responsibilities that come with carrying them,” Johnson continued. He said as “the parent of a

teenage daughter and son first and foremost I’ve talked with parents, police and public and private college and university people throughout my district and across Texas. It’s my pledge as a parent and a legislator to listen.” Johnson, as a former three term city council member in the state’s largest city and owner of a respected restaurant that has lived all his life in his district working to open and provide programs and places for young people to learn, believes the law is dangerous. “It puts in harm’s way our youth and the college staff it was

designed to protect,” he said. His first aim is to review the 37 out of 38 private colleges and universities that have used their right under the law to opt out of the requirement to allow handguns on campuses because of their concerns for the students and faculty on their campuses. Johnson wants to see that option made available to public universities and colleges as well. “I’m committed to listening to the parents, police and public university and college students and education professionals that are concerned. In the 85th Legislative Session I’m committed to seeing that public universities have this same option as private universities to opt out and to bring again attention and work to restoring public education funding,” he said. Fuel Up Like Team USA

.S. Olympic athletes know what it takes to build a champion: a lifetime of determination and training, countless competitions and years of fueling their bodies with the right foods and beverages. A survey1 was conducted among U.S. Olympians, Paralympians and Olympic/Paralympic hopefuls, and the more than 1,000 who responded rated a healthy diet even higher than their intense training schedule as a key to their success. It’s not just a healthy diet they’re seeking – it’s the right mix of nutrients to help them reach their peak training, and that includes high-quality protein, like the protein in milk. Milk is a nutrient powerhouse with nine essential nutrients, including 8 grams of natural protein, in each 8-ounce serving. It provides a nutrient package that’s hard to find in any other single food or beverage. According to the survey, nine out of 10 U.S. Olympian respondents grew up drinking milk*, largely thanks to encouragement from their moms. In addition, U.S. Olympic Training Centers, where athletes train at the highest level, serve tens of thousands of gallons of milk every year. “I’m always focused on getting the right nutrients to help fuel my training and protein is something I aim to get in every morning,” said Jennifer Kessy, professional beach volleyball player and London 2012 Olympic Games silver medal winner.

“My mom encouraged me to drink milk growing up because of all the nutrients you get in one glass. Milk is still a staple in my diet, and now that I am a mom, I try to take what my mother taught me about healthy eating and nutrition and pass it on to my daughter.” Not only is milk helping fuel Team USA, fans also have the chance to learn how to train like an Olympian when they purchase white milk for their families. Through August 28, fans are encouraged to upload receipts from milk purchases to milklife.com/ champions. Each uploaded milk receipt provides an opportunity to win** official prizes, including a trip to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, a web training session with a Team USA athlete and co-branded Team USA gear. The U.S. Olympic Committee and its National Governing Bodies distributed e-mail invitations with a link to the survey to its retired, current, and hopeful athletes inviting them to participate. In total, across Olympic and Paralympic sports, 1,113 completed the ten-minute survey (675 Olympians, 93 Paralympians and 345

to 16 greater Houston area high school graduates; one of whom was Rebecca Williams of Yates Hates School. The students received sums from $1,000 to $2,000. In addition to funds provided by HTA, donors included the National Senior Women’s Clay Court Championships Tennis Tournament. Four of the awards were given in Williams memory of Steve Wolford and one of Michael Horvath, Jr. All 15 students played either varsity tennis for their high school teams, participated in NJTL or in local USTA tournaments. The HTA has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarship funds to deserving high school seniors since 1992. Freshmen Move in to University Towers Style Newswire he class of 2020 at Texas Southern University (#TxSU2020) arrived on campus August 14 for movein day. New Tigers and their parents were greeted by President Dr. Lane Austin Lane,

You’re the One I Want

ine, mine, mine. When you were two years old, that was your favorite word. Everything you saw belonged to you, somehow, one way or another. If you liked it, it was yours. If you didn’t like it, it was yours, too. And as you’ll see in the new novel “You’re the One I Want” by Shane Allison, some people never outgrow that. Don’t think Bree didn’t notice that Deanthony was at Kashawn’s birthday party. Some might think it natural that he would be – they were twins, after all, so Kashawn’s birthday was Deanthony’s birthday, too. But Bree didn’t think Deanthony would dare show his face after what happened. She surely hoped he wouldn’t tell anyone that they’d slept together, because Bree was married to Kashawn. Why did she do it? Bree didn’t have an answer to that. She loved Kashawn, that was for sure. He was a doctor, respected in their community, and he was smoking-hot. He loved her, too, though he knew she had a shady past as a dancer at a local gentleman’s club. He treated Bree like a queen, so there was no reason for her to sleep with Kashawn’s brother, except that she couldn’t resist the way Deanthony looked at her. Deanthony had always been a little jealous of Kashawn. Truth was, he was in love with Bree and he couldn’t understand why she’d ever choose Kashawn over him. He was better for her in so many ways, and he knew she’d be happier with him – just as long as she never found out what he did after he left Florida to follow his dreams. Bree’s BFF, Tangela, had a plan.

That was nothing new; Tangela was always planning on Bree’s behalf because it was all about Bree, wasn’t it? She was always making Bree’s life better, making Bree’s marriage better, getting Bree what she thought she needed, helping Bree make Kashawn happy. All that, it was something Tangela hated, just as she hated Bree because Tangela really just wanted Kashawn for herself. And here’s the thing: much like Bree, Tangela always got what she wanted; plus, she really wasn’t Bree’s best friend. Tangela wasn’t anybody’s friend… Sounds complicated? Yes, it is, somewhat. Confusing conversation between characters doesn’t help any, either - but then again, scintillating dialogue isn’t why you’d pick this book up. Filled with explicit sex, profanity, violence, lies, and cheating, “You’re the One I Want” is an overthe-top story that you might not decide to read in public because it’s steamy. I mean, wipe-the-fog-from-yourglasses steamy. Everything else is secondary in this book – the characters don’t matter, the locale doesn’t matter, even author Shane Allison’s supporting cast is inconsequential here. The steam is at the stern, sex is what runs this book, and that’s all you need to know. I say that so you’re clear that this novel is predictable and nasty, but readable. It’s not horrid, but it is hot. And if you need that kind of escape, grab “You’re the One I Want” and make it yours. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Houston Super Bowl Committee Hosts First Ever Business Connect Pitch Day For Diverse Suppliers By Lisa Valadez, Associate Publisher

When it comes to entertainment, Miller Outdoor Theatre is a real breath of fresh air. Committee

E

arlier this month the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee hosted its first-ever ‘Business Connect Pitch Day’ for diverse Houston suppliers inside the historic Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. Close to 100 business owners who represent multiple bases such as minorities, LGBTQ and women owned business were in attendance, each presenting a 5-minute speech to the Super Bowl Host Committee Staff and community partners. Houstonian LaMecia Butler came up with the idea of “Pitch Day.” As an overseer of the Houston Host Committee’s Touchdown Houston program as well as Business Connect, Butler noticed the great demand from minority business owners to try and pitch their businesses to the Host Committee. The result was a “speed dating” concept in which multiple business owners gave their best pitches to the Host Committee for inclusion. Over 500 business owners applied for the event with 411 being accepted into the program. Considering that this particular Pitch Day was the first in the history of the Host Committee, the pitches were placed into 10 of 65 proposed categories. Those categories included historically in-demand items such as catering, gift and promotional items, audio/visual technology & more. While Touchdown Houston caters towards the charitable and giving portion of the Committee and Business Connect maintains a relationship with the NFL’s Super Bowl Supplier Diversity program, the Pitch Day was a successful event. The opportunity for business owners to be heard directly led to many fellow business owners getting the opportunity to match owners faces with the businesses they represent. HoustonISD’s New Superintendent’s Lofty List of Expectation

Dr. Carranza

W

hen the school bells ring for Houston ISD on August 22nd there will be a new chief at the helm. This school year will be an exciting one full of transition and change as Dr. Richard Carranza steps in the role of superintendent of the seventh largest school district in the country. Dr. Carranza beat put 34 other finalists who made the cut after a nationwide search to fulfill the spot left vacant by Dr. Terry Grier in February 2016. Many expectations lie on the shoulders of Carranza as so much is expected of him from the school board, students, faculty, parents and the community. Board President Manuel Rodriguez Jr. said in an interview that the next HISD superintendent needed to be one who could communicate with different populations, as the district is highly diverse. But also the superintendent needed to be able to work within the various political branches in Houston and with community and business partners. “We need a person that can lead all these different factions to come together to understand that what we want to do is educate all the children of HISD so they can be college ready, workforce ready and ready to go into a global economy,” Rodriguez. Echoing some of those same desires were parents and those in the community. Numerous community meetings were held to gain insight from the public on what characteristics they 10

Aug 18 - Aug 24, 2016

thought the next superintendent should. Rodriguez said they heard over 3,000 requests of what the superintendent should look like. Some of them include a person who was a good communicator, be bilingual, understood centralize and decentralized budgeting, and understand Houston, Texas laws, and students’ needs. A lofty list but one that Dr. Caranza thinks he can handle. Caranza comes to HoustonISD from California where he was the superintendent of 53,000 students in the San Francisco Unified School District. As the new HISD superintendent he more than triple the amount that will under his watchful eye as HISD has in over 200,000 students. In California, Carranza was able to have successes that board members are looking for in Houston. Under his leadership, students were globally ready upon graduation as 850 of the 3,400 graduates in 2015 earned a seal of billiteracy, meaning they mastered two languages upon graduation. Other success included an increase in district funds of 30 million in private donations and new contract agreements for teachers yielding them to receive a 12 percent pay raise. His ability to diversify is what stood out the most with the board, especially since the district has a large Hispanic population. Carranza is fluent in both English and Spanish and has a long history of working with diverse populations successfully. He will be able to relate to many of the students in HISD with language barrier since www.StyleMagazine.com

he did not learn English until he was in elementary school. Carranza has said in previous interviews that his plans for Houston won’t be cookie cutter. Based on his work in California, it assumed that he is more about working with all parties involved in situations to solve problems. In San Francisco when schools were struggling, Carranza put more money into the schools to address their needs. Teachers over students with low test scores weren’t fire because Carranza doesn’t just look at test data but other variables to make decisions on what to do next. In a recent interview with Houston Public Media, Carranza said one of his first issues of concerns that he wants to tackle is the recapture payment. HISD is facing a budget shortfall of more than one million. By law under the Texas Education Code, HISD is required to make a recapture payment of $162 million. HISD only has $55 million. Carranza wants legislatures to understand how this negativity impacts districts like HISD that have huge student population of economically disadvantage students. Carranza officially became HoustonISD new superintendent on Thursday, August 18, 2016. On his to-do list improving the 40 schools deemed low performing schools and maneuvering HISD’s budget woes. W

hen you are living on purpose and in the now moment, you have a conscious awareness of what you are focusing on and how you are feeling. “Our Intention Creates Our Reality” -Wayne Dyer Your present reality represents the quality of the focus on your intentions. Setting intentions for the future while giving focus to who you are being in the present moment is the success formula to manifesting exactly what you want. “When You Change The Way You Look At Things, The Things You Look At Change” -Wayne Dyer Whatever you intend to manifest; you must match the vibration of already having the essence of what you want in your present reality. “You Have The Option Of Observing Things As They Are, Or Of Imagining Them As You Want Them To Be - And Whichever Option You Choose, Your Thoughts Produce A Vibration Within You That Equals Your Point Of Attraction, And Then Circumstances And Events Line Up To Match The Vibrations That You Have Offered” - Abraham Hicks

Capital Grille Celebrates Rule Breakers By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

I

n Houston, our choices for dining seem endless; our city is filled with eateries that cultivate the diversity of our population. When it comes to fine dining, the choices are fewer, but the experiences are unique and attract customers who expect something far above average. At Capital Grille, this marks the eighth season of their “Generous Pour Wine Event” which is being served simultaneously with a top-notch menu for Houston’s Restaurant Weeks. In fact, “This year, The Generous Pour collection pays tribute to the bold risks and strong decisions of the men and women who were not afraid to challenge the norm,” said George Miliotes, The Capital Grille’s Master Sommelier and one of only 230 in the world to have earned that prestigious title.” Therefore, customers are able to enjoy some fine wines that are listed on a menu that is properly titled for this selection called “Rebels, Rule Breakers & Game Changers.” On a recent visit to the Capital Grille located in City Center, my guest and I experienced excellent service, superb food, and the warm ambiance of the restaurant. We started with the pan seared scallop on a bed of fresh corn salad, which was paired with the Stellina di Notte Pinot Grigio, which is described as “light and refreshing Pinot Grigio was born out of American innovation paired with centuries old tradition. Created in the foothills of the Italian Alps – home to the most famous Pinot Grigio in the world.” Next, we sampled the “Lobster and Crab Cakes,” which also blended well with the pinot. The sweetness of the shellfish and the crispness of the wine made each bite of food even better than the previous. Shortly thereafter, we were introduced to the Fresh Mozzarella, Tomato, Basil with 15-year aged Balsamic. For this dish, a beefsteak tomato is centered beautifully, topped with fresh mozzarella cheese that is made every two hours in the kitchen, and encircled by the balsamic. That vinegar was the star of this plate for me, it was full of flavor, and the sweet and savory notes were well balanced. For the main course we enjoyed the Bone-in Ribeye and Chilean Sea Bass in Mushroom Soy broth, along with a couple of the red wines, specifically, Stags’ Leap, The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon and Beaulieu Vineyard, Tapestry Cabernet Blend. This was a big score for my taste buds; the wines were bold, smooth and had a clean finish on the palate. Finally, the evening was wrapped up by a generous dessert sampler; flourless chocolate, coconut cream pie and crème brulee with a robust cup of java. Our server Sean, and Executive Chef Jeffrey Meyer made our evening spectacular by suggesting the perfect combinations of food and wine along with sharing their culinary experiences with us. TRAVEL

St. Thomas Island Paradise

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

T

he connection between Texas & the US Virgin Islands is a bit deeper than you think. It’s not just Tim Duncan being the country’s biggest export to the state, its the vast amount of Texans that travel from the Lone Star state to the beautiful island. Over 30,000 Texans vacation in the US Virgin Islands every year and that number could be expected to grow over time. United Airlines officially has regularly scheduled flights to the island and Houston Style was part of the inaugural flight to one of the Virgin Islands’ most prominent locales: St. Thomas. St. Thomas is part of a trio of islands that fly under the US Virgin Island umbrella. St. John & also St. Croix have been vacation hubs for couples, traveling singles and passionate travel enthusiasts for years. All of the proper ideas of a beach filter through the mind when thinking of St. John, St. Thomas & St. Croix: picturesque blue water, white, smooth beaches and the occasional mixed drink with a mini-umbrella thrown in to complete the dream. Since all three

islands are technically US territory, visitors do not need passports in order to visit there. St. Thomas is the transportation hub of the Virgin Islands; the centerpiece of the V.I. system as one simply cannot leave the islands without gracing its soil. Visitors who maintain a longer stay on the isle may be drawn by the legendary shopping venues, the wide variety of water sports, activities, beaches and other accommodations. The bustling port of Charlotte Amalie is the main town, while Red Hook sits on the eastern tip. The west end of the island is relatively wild; an open sprawl while hotels and resorts situated along the rim of the southern and eastern shores.
