T
he news this weekend that Julian Bond passed away at 75 saddened me deeply. America has lost a true and still vital champion for justice. President Obama, hailing Bond as a hero and a friend, noted that “Julian Bond helped change this country for the better. And what better way to be remembered than that.” At a very young age, Bond helped forge the emerging civil rights movement, and was in many ways, a founding father of the New South that we now see still in formation. In 1957, as a student at Morehouse, son of a college president, varsity swimmer, head of the literary magazine, intern for Time Magazine, he was on the path to success. But the success he chose was to make history, not money. He was arrested after organizing some of the first student demonstrations to desegregate Atlanta’s lunch counters,

parks and theaters. Realizing that young people could take risks too costly for adults with families, at 20, he helped found SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He became its secretary and head of its communications in part because he was seen as organized, levelheaded and eloquent. Julian was ahead of most in the movement for understanding the big picture. He realized that civil rights could not be achieved without economic rights, and that economic rights would not advance if America kept throwing resources and lives into war abroad. He became an early and outspoken critic of the Vietnam War. After the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, Julian led voter registration drives. At the remarkable age of 25, he was elected to the Georgia State House. The sitting legislators demanded that he repudiate his opposition to the Vietnam War. When he refused, they refused to seat him. Three times his constituents re-elected him, three times the House denied him his seat. Finally the Supreme Court ruled their actions unconstitutional. In January 1967, Bond took his seat, and served in the House and Senate for the next two decades. By that time he was a national hero for having stood on principle even at the cost of his political career. In the embittered 1968 Chicago Democratic Presidential Convention, Bond led an
insurgent Georgia delegation and was called upon to second the nomination of Eugene McCarthy for president. With the convention floor in bedlam and demonstrations raging outside the hall, Bond was nominated as vice president, a symbolic nomination (he was only 27 and the constitutionally required age is 35) “about the wave of the future.” Bond served as legislator, scholar, teacher and leader. He was a founder and early president of the Southern Poverty Law Center. He taught at the University of Virginia and lectured widely, receiving over 30 honorary degrees. He chaired the NAACP for 12 years until 2010. He had experienced first-hand the slight and shackles of segregation -- and organized to end them. He knew first-hand the suppression of the right to vote and helped build a movement to challenge that. To h i s f i n a l y e a r s , h i s intelligence, clarity and passion continued to instruct. He understood that, as he put it, “America is race,” from the founders to the Civil War to the civil rights movement to Treyvon Martin, Michael Brown and Sandra Bland. He knew that Barack Obama’s election and re-election was a measure of the progress that had been made but “didn’t herald a post-civil rights America. ... It couldn’t eliminate structural inequity or racist attitudes,” he said, even suggesting Obama’s election fomented
such attitudes: “Obama,” he said, “is to the tea party as the moon is to werewolves.” To his final days, he urged people into motion, knowing that only when people mobilized and acted could anything change. “We look back and see giant leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King,” he taught, but the civil rights movement was “a people’s movement. It produced leaders of its own; but it relied not on the noted but the nameless, not on the famous but the faceless. It didn’t wait for commands from afar to begin a campaign against injustice. It saw wrong and acted against it; it saw evil and brought it down.” Julian Bond was a leader of exceptional clarity. He had the strong mind and courage needed to break strong chains. He made a dramatic contribution with his life. And he will be deeply missed. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. ith about 70 days left to Houston’s November 3rd general elections, Houston Association of Realtors, African American Sheriff’s League, American Federation of Teachers and an array of pastors from across Houston are now getting behind backing business and civic leader Laurie Robinson for Houston City Council At Large Pos. 4 to succeed term limited C.O. Bradford. “Houston is an amazing city; complete with dynamic diversity that provides the framework for exciting enterprise and successful small business, international corporations coming together for trade on a world-class stage; the planet’s finest medical facilities, a cuisine and art culture that is recognized throughout the earth and ever-evolving communities that have made our city a national leader. We’ve achieved so much and together can achieve so much,” said Robinson. Robinson earned her college degree from the University of North Texas followed by an MBA from the University of St. Thomas. She has built her business Project and Vendor Management Advisors, LLC (PVMA) here in Houston based on her more than 22 years of increasingly complex experience and expertise in program and project management, regulatory

compliance, internal audit, government affairs and policy implementation in healthcare and housing industries and work she has done in efficiency disaster management and recovery efforts. Her hard work won her accomplishments from providing cost savings at positions at the Office of Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services, Ernst & Young’s National Health Science Advisory Services Practice, Prudential Insurance Company of America and other posts in problem solving at accounting and consulting firms based across the City of Houston. “Most recently, I successfully managed the execution of more than $1 billion dollars in disaster relief funds as the project manager for the largest academic and medical facilities in Texas after Hurricane Ike,” she said. As a private business owner, she worked with all 22-city departments to earn around $400 million in reimbursements following Hurricanes Katrina and Ike and has discovered more than $11 million for the city that would have been lost to waste. Robinson, knowing the challenges that can come from working to combat bureaucracies and knowing every penny must count and be counted no matter how big the

budget, has provided professional guidance at Federal Emergency M a n a g e m e n t Administration (FEMA), Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the City of Houston, Harris Health, and several public housing authorities, and health care organizations throughout the country. She has written federal legislation to provide over 25 million seniors improved Medicare benefits and helped thousands of families recover from recent disasters. “As a business owner committed to this city I know Laurie Robinson infrastructure must be addressed for those of us that drive across the city. As a taxpayer that has faced burdens of worrying about taxation, regulation and litigation, I know our city must be fiscally and socially responsible. And I know the

Julian Bond’s Legacy: Make Education Your Only Priority
Julian Bond

aking education your priority seems like common sense. Just like parents’ job is to go to work to provide for the family, a child’s job is to go to school and make good grades. But sometimes the distractions of life can throw a child off course. Students should be well rounded with organizations and other activities but students shouldn’t get so involved that they loose their focus of gaining a great education. The late Julian Bond said, “I tell young people to prepare themselves as best they can for a world

Aug 20 - Aug 26, 2015
that grows more challenging every day-get the best education they can, and couple that education with real-life experience in social justice work.” No one knew that better than him since that is exactly how he lived. Bond lived a sort of shelter life in Pennsylvania. His mother was a former librarian at Clark Atlanta University while his father became the first president of Fort Valley State College (later Fort Valley State University), first African American president of Lincoln University, and dean of education at Atlanta University (later Clark Atlanta University). With parents like that one can guess the importance of education in the Bond household. Though a young Bond had what was considered a comfortable life he still was affected by racism. His father, being a civil rights activist as well, was extremely instrumental in the advancement of civil rights in Georgia to the point that he helped to desegregate schools and a young Bond was among the first to integrate schools in the area. I don’t know if it was the distractions of the civil rights movement or education being taken for granted, but something preoccupied Bond’s mind while in school. His focus Photo: washingtonpost was somewhere else and
www.StyleMagazine.com
that caused his grades to be mediocre at best even though he had the potential of an A+ student. This same mentality followed him to college. His grades continued to be just good enough as the passion to fight for civil rights grew within him. Following the lead of his father, Bond helped to integrate several theaters, lunch counters and parks in Atlanta with an organization he helped establish, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Eventually he would get so involved that he dropped out of college. Ten years after dropping out of college Bond would return to graduate at the age of 31. Why did he return to school? Although he achieved great success and made strides with civil rights, he knew with the right education he could accomplish more. Going back to school to get his degree allowed him to serve in the Georgia Senate so he could effect change against discrimination laws, be a professor at universities like Harvard to educate more minorities, and garner other accomplishments. Students should look to Bond’s life as an example of how not to take education for granted and how it can change your life. Don’t wait to grasp the lesson of the value of education. Start now by soaking up every morsel your teachers dish out. Don’t waste time by goofing off in class. Don’t get distracted of your goals. Make education your priority and allow other things to take a secondary focus. In this way his legacy can live on. Equal education for all is one of the issues he and others fought so hard for. He once said, “ Violence is black children going to school for 12 years and receiving 6 years’ worth of education.” Don’t attribute to violence by not doing your part to make the grade. Make this school year amazing by putting your best foot forward all year to be a student of excellence. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.
BOOK REVIEW By Terri
“
Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer
Trust me.” Two words that make you want to do the opposite, causing you to question everything that’s said. “Trust me” makes you squirm. “Trust me” makes you itch, even though there are times when there’s no other choice. And in the new book “Shots on the Bridge” by Ronnie Greene, you’ll read about assumed trust that was broken in a most devastating way. On the morning of August 29, 2005, almost an hour after Hurricane Katrina hit land, a levee broke and water poured into New Orleans. Many people, heeding their mayor’s pleas, fled the city before Katrina arrived but an estimated one hundred thousand didn’t – including police, who became “prisoners of the hurricane’s wake.” Also stranded: onetime NFL player Lance Madison and his mentally disabled brother, Ronald; and 17-year-old JJ Brissette, his friend Jose Holmes Jr., Jose’s aunt Susan Bartholomew, her family, and extended family. Six days post-hurricane, after waiting for rescue that never came, enduring the heat, the stench, and a lack of food, the families, on opposite sides of the Danziger Bridge and unbeknownst to each other, set out to find help on their own. The trouble, at its very core,
Join
Shots on the Bridge began with shots fired on the Danziger Bridge by unknown miscreants who fled quickly. In later months, Detective Jennifer Dupree would avow that she never said “Officer down” when she reported those shots. Yes, she’d radioed for help, but not with those words; still, at their makeshift headquarters, officers readying for duty heard Dupree’s call for assistance. Eleven of them, both black and white, jumped in a truck and raced to the bridge. It was, as Greene says, “chaos.” Arriving at the bridge, police began shooting before they even understood who they were shooting at. Whether or not they knew that the African American civilians they shot were unarmed is still debated but when the gunfire stopped, two people were dead and many injured in what Greene says “was about the worst abuse of police power… ever seen.” I struggled for a long time over what to say about this book. For sure, you’ll spend a lot of time picking your jaw up off the floor while you’re reading “Shots on the Bridge.” But on the other hand, there’s a lot to follow, and that makes it a bit hard to read. I can’t use the verb “enjoy” here, either, because what’s to enjoy about what happened? You may appreciate the courtroom drama, or the investigative techniques it took to see how the cover-up evolved, but that
Nicque Montgomery and Erica Babino along with co-hosts:
seems secondary to what author Ronnie Greene reports – even though it comprises most of the book. And yet – to get there, you have to read that astounding first half. Some of the outcome you’ll see will satisfy you, but I’m guessing you likely won’t be happy at the end of this squirmy book. Still, I believe that “Shots on the Bridge” is overall worth a try on this tenth anniversary of the event – if nothing but because you can trust that it’ll make you think. Coach Smart was recently named the head coach of the men’s basketball team, and he is wasting no time to get the ball rolling to prepare for this upcoming season. We are 87 days away from the Longhorns season opener. Unlike most NCAA Division 1 teams Coach Smart is planning on hosting practice for his team on the first day of school August 26th, where as most teams will receive the first few days off to readjust to the academic year. Smart has made some adjustments to the Longhorn offense. “We are going to play a fast paced style of basketball …if that ball is on the floor we are going after it,” said Smart. Coach Smart has a lot of players that could be influential in this year’s success, but Isaiah Taylor has been a standout. “I think it starts with Isaiah Taylor, our point guard. He’s a really good play maker, I think he can be one of the best assist men and scorers with that combination as a point guard and from their I think there’s quite a few guys on our team that can help with our

HEALTH
Back-To- School Eating Tips For Health Kids By Jade
Gold, Health Writer
W
e all know it’s that time of year where it’s just a few days before we send our children back-to-school. Early morning car pools, traffic, quick runs through the drive through at McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A or Starbucks and in the worse case, we just skip breakfast all together. I want to challenge every parent to be part of their children’s success this year and help them to have better habits during their school days. Just a few simple tips will help you and your children during each school day. Studies show that children who eat a nutritious breakfast function better all day long. They do better in school and have better concentration with more energy. Know what is being offered at your child’s school both in the lunchroom and at the vending machines. Learn about your child’s school wellness policy and get involved in school groups to put certain vending items in place. Each 12- ounce soft drink contains approx. 10 teaspoons of sugar and 150 calories. Drinking one can of soda a day increases a child’s risk of obesity by more than 60%. Choose healthier options to send with your child’s lunch and encourage more water throughout the day. Prepare your child’s lunch the night before. Talk to your children about what they would like but also use these moments to educate your children when introducing something new. Just because your child hasn’t traditionally had good eating habits, it is never too late to change and make eating fun as well as educational for them to understand why they should make better choices. Include more fruits, veggies and less process foods at all cost. One of my favorite sites is www.Bonappetit.com with 25 Quick & Easy School Lunches to pack for your kids

Our children only live the lives that we set the example for. If you spend the majority of your time making excuses why you can’t prepare healthy meals in the mornings or why every dinner is in a drive through window, prepared out of a frozen meal or in a box; there should be no question as to where our children learned unhealthy eating habits that will only follow them through adulthood. Choose this school year as the one that you help make significant changes in your child’s health and let’s teach them early in life their
lives matter. For more ways to stay healthy, visit www.FaceBook.com/JadeGoldFitness

Too Many Men Talking About Relationships; Not Enough Men In Relationships By Demez
White, Feature Writer
Modern Day Stories of Courtships, Love and Dating
Y
ou can’t microwave a relationship. You can’t rush the dating process. Just because we have more apps and more websites doesn’t mean that the same rules that applied thirty years ago, don’t apply today. We live in a world with more options, more access but that doesn’t mean there’s more quality. A lot of men will write about how to treat women. How to date, how to love and I respect their viewpoints. A lot of it is really good advice but I have one problem with it. Are they living it? I feel comfortable writing about dating and relationships because I live the words I write about. This wasn’t always the case so seeing the man I was compared to the man I am pretty cool actually. I want men to learn from my mistakes, not feel like I’m beating them over the head. I’m hard on men because men are supposed to be leaders. We’re supposed to court and impress and show women how special they are. Somewhere down the line things started to become reversed. Men started feeling like it was women that needed to be impressive. It was women that needed to recognize a good thing when they saw it. I kid you not when I say I see 40 and 50 year old men that are still talking about dating like it’s a “chore.” I don’t want to spend this amount of money; I don’t want to be tied down right now.” “I’m a King that’s looking for a Queen.” If you really were a King you’d be building a Kingdom, not Instagramming selfies. Don’t mistake what I’m saying. There’s no point in getting in a relationship before you’re mentally ready or in settling for someone you know you don’t really want. What I am saying though is that if you have a good thing; don’t leave the door open feeling like you’ll find something better. Don’t wait to treat her like she matters until you see how she treats you. In most cases once you show a woman that you’re legit, she’ll meet you and probably exceed you in how she treats you. When I was younger I wrote that a date was picking a woman up, going at least two places and bringing her a small gift. The words of a young gentleman but foolish words none the less. A date is all about intentions. Women can be difficult, they can be moody but more than anything they see sincerity. Maybe you don’t have a hundred dollars so two can eat at Houston Restaurant Week but do you have twenty dollars? A cheap bottle of wine and a medium pizza, two wine glasses. That date can be anywhere from the top floor of a parking garage watching the rain fall to a park bench. There’s no standard when it comes to dating and being a good man, the only standard is being authentic and making her a priority. I don’t have my life together. Not financially, not spiritually, not professionally. I’m still very much a work in progress but you know what I do have? A willingness to be a better man today than I was yesterday. A willingness to be faithful, to work hard at understanding my flaws and correcting them. Relationships aren’t easy, they aren’t givens but they are worth it. Over the next couple months I’ll be coming to you once a week with an article about relationships, dating, courtships, crushes or just a love story that I’ve been told about. The foundation of any home is a man and a woman. Don’t deprive yourself of that. For more stories by Demez White, visit www.demezw.com.

Fine Dining for Charity at Perry’s Steakhouse By Bell of TotallyRandie.com
W
e are in the middle of Houston Restaurants Weeks (HRW). All dinners have to do is log on to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and see mouth watering pictures from foodies, armature foodies, newbies and more posting and hashtagging. More date nights are being made. More exotic lunches are being taken. Some ask, with over 100 restaurants participating why visit one that you’ve been too before? Well I have two reasons for you: atmosphere (experience) and charity. Yes, some tend to forget the purpose of HRW. It’s definitely not a stimulus package for foodies. It’s purpose, as originated by Cleaverly Stone, is to donate 100% of funds raised to the Houston Food Bank. So here’s how it works: Lunch: $20 (Donates $3) Brunch: $25 (Donates $4) Dinner: $35 (Donates $5) Dinner: $45 (Donates $7)
Advertise Your Restaurant HERE!
So each year what I like to do is visit an old and a new restaurant. One of those restaurants that I revisit each year is Perry’s Steakhouse. If you have been visiting Perry’s for the past 8 years of their involvement with HRW, you know that they have never changed their menu. They serve the same tangy sweet Caesar Salad, wedge salad, or pear salad to start. If you are an insatiable carnivore, you have the choice of Perry’s Famous Porkchops, 8oz Filet, or fresh Grilled Salmon. To end it you have the white chocolate cheesecake, trio dessert, or milk chocolate peanut bar served with a side of the best candied peanuts you’ve ever had. If they serve this every year, why return? Atmosphere As I mentioned earlier, some restaurants just have that X factor when it comes to the atmosphere. While speaking to James Kuehn, General Manager of the Memorial City location, he mentioned that you should come get the “Perry’s experience.” That’s exactly what it is an experience. Imagine working all week, coming home exhausted, haven’t really spent time with your husband/wife or companion, and all you want to do is go out on a nice date. You groom and get dressed very nicely and go to a restaurant where the staff is rude, the food is cold, and the drinks taste more like water than a cocktail. This is something you won’t experience at Perry’s. To go a step further this is something I have never experienced at Perry’s. From the time I walked in the door, the staff was friendly and helpful. Although I knew what I wanted, I was never rushed to make a decision. I could literally write a book about how great the food was. The 8oz (instead of the 6 or 4oz that most steakhouses serve during HRW) was moist, tender and paired nicely with the sweet yet semi-dry red house wine. Dessert included gives you the 5-star experience with a 2-star price. In my book, experience matters. The icing on the cake (pun intended) however is the donations. Charity I love giving back. I recycle, volunteer, and perform random acts of kindness each chance I get. Because it’s from the heart I don’t look for anything in return. However, how cool is it that each meal already includes a donation. Last year Perry’s raise 58,000 dollars for the Houston Food Bank. Now if 7 dollars from each meal equates to 21 meals served, how many meals did they provide last year? I’ll leave you do the math; don’t forget to tweet us your answer. With hunger being a major issue worldwide, it’s important to me to help out in my own city. And it should be important to you as well! Supporting HRW is one easily delicious way to do it! Talk about eating with style! If you haven’t been to Perry’s I strongly suggest you visit. You still have another two weeks to go. Enjoy the experience, let the staff relax and cater to you, savor the food, and enjoy doing your part in giving back. Make sure to use your favorite social media to tell me about your experience. Walmart Profits Hit by Strong Dollar and Higher Wages
M
oody’s Investors Service upgraded the subordinate lien rating of the Houston Airport System (HAS) to A1 and affirmed the Aa3 senior lien rating and the A2 inferior lien rating. The upgrade to A1 of the subordinate lien rating was based on “improved clarity on the timing and funding sources for the system’s large $2.2 billion capital plan, the recent approval of PFC collection at both IAH and HOU in 2015, and the resilience shown in the local economy through the initial phases of the drop in oil prices.” Both Bush Intercontinental and Hobby Airport saw record highs in passenger numbers in 2014, totaling more than 53 million passengers at HAS airports — the fifth straight year for passenger totals at the two commercial airports. An increase in international traffic at IAH also played a role in the upgrade. For more information, visit www.fly2houston.com.
