There Are Choices

s September approaches, the 2014 election campaign moves into its home stretch. Control of the Senate, the House and many statehouses is at stake. Literally billions will be spent on advertisements, with a deluge in media markets in states with contested Senate seats. Millions will be spent on polling and focus groups to provide guidance to candidates and independent expenditure outfits on what to say and how to say it. Much effort will be put into camouflage. Wolves will don sheep’s clothing. Sheep will pretend to be independent. Ideological warriors will present themselves as peacemakers. Negative ad campaigns will turn off voters -- and will be intended to do in many cases. We’ve already seen brazen examples of this. Republicans, with Senate Leader Mitch McConnell at

Republican governors are depriving millions of access to health care by refusing to accept federal money to expand Medicaid. They’d rather score a political point in being against Obamacare than a moral point in providing care to those who need it. Democrats favor investing in rebuilding our decrepit infrastructure, putting people back to work. Republicans in both Houses have opposed every proposal to do so -- too much government spending. They barely scraped the votes together for a temporary extension of the highway trust fund. Democrats pushed to allow everyone with a student loan to refinance at today’s far lower rates, paid for by raising taxes on millionaires. They would also expand Pell Grants for children from low wage families. Republicans blocked refinancing and would cut Pell grants, not expand them. Democrats voted to protect equal pay for women; Republicans filibustered to block it in the Senate. Democrats passed comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate. Republicans refuse even to allow it to come to a vote in the House. Republicans voted for a budget that would cut most deeply in programs for the most vulnerable Ameri-
Carroll Robinson Reaches to a Brighter Houston Future
arroll Robinson is confident Houston, now America’s fourth largest city anchoring America’s third largest county, can keep from falling to the social and financial pathologies today plaguing Detroit, which once was America’s fourth biggest city. “Houston now generates higher gross domestic growth its self than all the entire booming state of Georgia. The Houston region is now the 30th most energetic economy on earth. This city is the 13th largest economy anywhere in the U. S,” Houston Community College Board Trustee and former three term Houston Council Member Robinson told the Houston Metropolitan Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee at its monthly meeting last week. “Houston is just not and never will be Detroit which today through mismanagement, apathy and lethargy has fallen to bankruptcy and is now America’s 18th largest city . We’re a growing and prosperous city in the center of one of the country’s most growing and prosperous regions and at the heart of a state that produces more jobs in it than all other states put together,” he said outlining his “Strategic Business Plan for Our City’s Future.” These

the head, have voted time and again to repeal health care reform. But McConnell now faces a tough race in Kentucky, where the health care reforms are popular, helping about 10 percent of the state’s population get insurance that they previously could not afford. So McConnell now suggests that he’d continue Kentucky’s plan -Kynect -- which, he claims, isn’t really Obamacare. Double talk like this helps explain why Republicans and Congress in general are at record lows in popular approval. Some voters say it doesn’t make a difference. “Don’t vote, you only encourage them” is the hip quip. But that is simply wrong. The reality is that the two parties in Congress offer very different visions and agenda for America. You have to cut through the smokescreens and the bad acting, but there are real choices to be made. Consider a few very basic issues: The Senate Democratic majority voted to raise the minimum wage. Republicans filibustered against it in the Senate and would not even let it come to the floor of the Congress for a vote. Republicans voted repeatedly to repeal health care reform. Worse,

are plans Robinson may be able to put into effect since there are rumors he’s considering running next year for City Controller to succeed Ronald Green. Green is term limited from seeking a third term. “My goal is greater than to keep Houston from falling to history’s sidelines as has Detroit. My goal is to make Houston greater. We can fix city

finances by cutting expenses, funding fully pension funds, consolidating city and city and county departments where that is credible and privatizing where practical and most important growing our tax base,” explained Robinson, a tireless campaigner with the immigrant work ethic emblazoned from his having been born in Jamaica. At 48, the former college athlete and constant college professor with the still athletic build, shaved head and polished cuff links white collar persona , still has the Texan American allure of “anything is possible” that comes from being an immigrant whose parents parlayed menial jobs into a college education that lead to management business professions for their many children. “This has to be the greatest country in the world,” Robinson, a lawyer and cheerleader for commerce repeats often. “Here I am, the son of a doorman. I’ve sat as an aide to a senator in the capitol of the second largest state in the country, sat on city council having been voted city-wide the maximum three times allowed by law by the citizens to represent at large America’s fourth largest city and now serve as an elected trustee on one of one of the country’s largest community col-

cans -- the poor, the elderly, the ill. It would have deprived an estimated 40 million Americans of health care protection by 2024 by repealing health care reform and slashing Medicaid. This list can go on. The Republican Party learned nothing from a Great Recession that they duck responsibility for. They want less regulation of banks, even after bankers excesses blew up the economy. They want lower taxes on the rich and corporations, even after it was clear that millionaires are paying lower tax rates than their secretaries, and multinationals like GE are avoiding taxes altogether. They want less spending at home and more spending on the military abroad, when it is clear that vital public investments are being starved. We can have two more years of obstruction and dysfunction. Or we can vote in leaders ready to vote for the reforms we need. There are choices. And the choice, in the end, is ours. To make it sensibly, voters need to cut through the fog and understand the differences. And then come out to vote, and vote in large numbers. Share this story online stylemagazine.com.
lege systems. Prior to 911 some folks ribbed me for rigidly wearing the colors I know represent us all but I will always stand by my Texas and American Flags, the Constitutions and values those flags represent,” he said. “We need to fix our streets, our sidewalks and our infrastructure but do it right without using tax and spend funding mechanisms that may not be best for the business and home property tax payers that fund this city,” Robinson said. He said Houston needs to work with federal and state officials to attract more engineers and high technology economic development startups, reduce and restructure fees and fines burdens to business and seriously cut the red tape in the permitting processes that prevent business dreams from being produced to fruition. Robinson and his wife, Mikita, have a 17-year-old son. What motivates him most he said is his being part of building for the future a city that will be attractive for his son and his son’s generation to keep coming back to, building their businesses in and making their home. whales! Yo u ’ v e read a lot of signs like that in Jean Love Cush your life, online and real-time. Save the whales or the environment, penguins or tigers, fish, trees, or grasses, there’s always something about to disappear, and you know that when it’s gone, it’s gone. But what about people? Aren’t they in trouble, too? In the new book “Endangered” by Jean Love Cush, who’s going to save young black men? Janae Williams had always told her son, Malik, not to run when the cops came. It was worse if you did, she said. So while he was hanging out on a Philadelphia street corner with his friends and sirens came their way, Malik stood still – and was arrested for the murder of a boy he knew. But, of course, Malik didn’t do it. Janae knew that her son was innocent. He was just 15 years old, a goodenough student, her baby. She’d raised him right – his father certainly had no hand in it – and Malik wasn’t capable

Harris County Cracking Down on Food Stamp Trafficking
arris County is cracking down on those who are misusing government issued food stamps. News 92FM reports that an investigation revealed that some Lone Star Card holders were trading their food stamps for cash. Storeowners are cashing in on the deal too. This is why Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson is going after storeowners first. Four have already been indicted and face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. According to News 92 FM, an investigation done by the BBB proved that a lot of students are wasting their time and money with most online high school diplomas programs. BBB found the most credible programs were the ones that had a lot of parent/guardian/teacher involvement and required students to do more work than just taking a test. of killing. Still, he was in jail and the court system was a maze that Janae couldn’t quite figure out. She wanted Malik home, no matter what – even if it took putting her trust in an unusual source who claimed he could help her son. When Calvin Moore left the ‘hood, he closed the door. He’d always had his sights on law school, power, money, a good life. He’d been at a big Philadelphia law firm for several years and was on track to make partner soon – so when his boss asked his assistance with a pro bono case for a non-profit, Calvin was reluctant. The Center for the Protection of Human Rights didn’t want his experience; of that, he was sure. All they wanted was his black face to represent. Known for around-the-globe humanitarian work, Roger Whitford always wanted to make a difference, and his organization was poised to do it. They just needed a case that was right, one he could defend in court in a way that would force nation-wide revisions for Black boys within the justice system. Roger had an audacious plan, and the case against Malik Williams was perfect… Talk about good timing. With its focus on justice and its

characters’ shouts for legal change, “Endangered” may be the most relevant book you’ll read this year. Be aware, though: author Jean Love Cush, who has a background in law, loads controversy inside her story. And yet, this drama isn’t all just courtroom-based. Cush’s characters are created with razor-sharpness and put in gut-wrenching situations. She then offers statistics (real ones!) to support her story – shocking stats about African American education, crime, society, and justice that move the story along, enhance its most memorable parts, and pull readers even further in. All I can say is “wow.” The cover of this book looks like it might be for middle-schoolers, but that’s incorrect; its audience is definitely 16-andup. If that’s you, and you’re open to one impressive thought-provoker, “Endangered” is a book to save time for.

Houston’s Growing Economic Business Boom
mong all the U.S. states Texas is one of the tops for business development. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau, BlackEnterprise.com, BlackDemographics.com and other sites indicates that Houston is one of the leading cities that is most profitable for black businesses and businesses in general. Noting Houston’s diverse culture as one of the major variables for business growth. Houston also has another major feather in our hat that is increasing the business boom, the Office of Business Opportunity under the leadership of Carlecia D. Wright. With August being National Black Business month Houston Style Magazine took a closer look at the OBO by speaking with its Director Wright and finding out what’s the fuel behind the economic business boom. Before Wright’s appointment by City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker in 2011, doing business with the city was somewhat of a mystery for smaller businesses. Many wanted to gain city contracts but didn’t know what resources to utilize or even know the first steps to take. Enters in Carlecia D. Wright brining structure and transparency to the OBO resulting in more entrepreneurs, more certifications, more programs and events, and best of all, more contracts for business owners with the city. “They have been tremendous accomplishments citywide as it relates to our supplier and diversity program and so we are really proud as a city,” said Wright as she noted the $1.1 billion awarded to small businesses in awards and contracts in the last four fiscal years of Mayor Parker’s administration. Of that $1.1 billion, $233.6 million of it went to black owned businesses. The increase in businesses gaining city contracts has to do with eliminating a lot of the obstacles they once faced, mainly all the red tape and understanding the process. Wright and her team have taken the lack of not knowing what to do and broken it down in a manner business owners can comprehend. Everything from helping future entrepreneurs develop a business plan to obtaining that first city contract can be facilitated with some innovative programs by the OBO. Programs like “I am Certified, Now What?” dives into giving business owners an understanding of how valuable being certified with city really is. Although certification is not needed to do business with the city or most entities, certification increases your chances of being successful according to Wright. “It adds value.” Wright continued, “You become part of a network.” Just as membership has always given one privileges, being certified by the city gives you Page 8
access to a bevy of resources. Plus the certification is not just good for doing business with the city but it open doors to do business with Houston ISD, Port of Houston Authority, Houston Community College, Department of Transportation and the State of Texas. Meet the Buyer and Industry Day programs brings business owners to the bargaining

table where they can actual meet the key players in the game that hold the strings to city contracts. Meet the Buyer, held annually in December, connects entrepreneurs with 200 plus purchasing officials representing 20 or more departments that know what type of procurements their looking for future projects, a major bonus. While Industry Days let business owners get specifics on the buying process and opens the window for crucial connections to be made for future business dealings. All this information and access could be a bit overwhelming. The OBO understands and supports that by linking business owners with mentors to kind of guide them on their journey. “We really look for opportunities to build capacity of existing companies. We are transparent about what’s actually happening within the city, within respect to departments, the type of opportunities that exist and so we are creating pools of transparency for companies so they can actually see what is actually happening down to a very granule level,” commented Wright. A price can’t be put on the wealth of assistance and information that Wright and her
August 28 - September 3, 2014
www.StyleMagazine.com
team offer out of the OBO. And that’s why they didn’t. “ I can say 95% of all our services are free,” said Wright. You read right Houston. Most services are free. They really try to remove all obstacles between business owners failing and them succeeding. “Take full advantage,” encouraged Wright. With all this innovation Wright is always looking towards to the future and ways to do more. And now that office has real data she can see how they are progressing. Since coming into the position in 2011 the OBO under Wright’s leadership has seen a substantial increase in the number of businesses working with the city. Having started with a pool of 1450 certified businesses to increasing that pool to nearly 2400 businesses, 850 of which are black owned, Wright is shooting for more. “Our goal is 300 new certified businesses in 2014,” said Wright, who is optimistic that they will exceed that goal since they have just begun their fiscal year on July 1st. “Every year we have goals and a lot of times we blow past those goals depending on the type of opportunities the city has.” The future is bright for OBO. Business entrepreneurships will certainly increase with the city’s business plan competition called Adopt Houston. Brought locally to citizens in city’s libraries, potential business owners are mentored through a partnership with Capital One Bank, develop a business plan, and then compete. This often leads to businesses getting the desperately needed financing for their start up costs. Tweet My Jobs is a new program that helps save businesses money by giving them free access to manage their human resourcing needs. Job seekers are connected with companies looking to hire qualified individuals to help put Houston back to work. Job seekers should mark their calendars for September 25th for the Hire Me Now Job Fair. Business owners need to access houstontx.gov to learn how to participate. Other resources that the OBO provides is the Houston Business Solution Center for free access to computers and printing, SCORE counselor, and Accion Texas for financial help. Future projects will include a small business academy, virtual legal clinic, and Build Up Houston. “We are successful because companies are winning contracts. But we are also successful because we are creating and launching tools for businesses from the very beginning. So if you just have an idea we could help launch that into an actual business plan,” said Wright. For more information about Carlecia D. Wright and the Office of Business Opportunity, visit houstontx.gov.

Football 101: Steve Jackson Breaks Down the Game of Football for Women
Push ‘em back, push ‘em back, way back,” I yelled as the team I was rooting for made a touchdown. Yes, I admit I am one of those who knows practically nothing about the game of football. This was greatly problematic for me in high school as I often tried to lead cheers at the game and said ‘go defense’ when I should have been saying ‘go offense.’ Now those who are like me can join other like minded people to participate in the Football 101 series hosted by former 3rd round NFL draft pick and NFL veteran coach Steve Jackson. Football 101 is a series of four events presented by the Steve Jackson Foundation for the sole purpose of educating and entertaining women on the fundamental aspects of football. The idea is from the head of Steve Jackson who was inspired to teach the series after women constantly asked him about the game of football during his days in the NFL. Many of the women were mothers with sons who played football that wanted to connect with their sons or women who wanted to impress their male friends. So Jackson thought why not just hold a series of events to teach women about the game. Beginning September 13th, Jackson will host the Football 101 series event on the 2nd Saturday of the month during football season from September through December. Jackson wants to make the event equally educational and entertaining. There will be brunch, Q&A sessions with former NFL players, giveaways and more while women learn the basics of the game. “It is kind of Ray Lewis meets Dr. Phil sits down with Roger Goodell and has tea with
Warren Buffett; it is kind of a mixed of everything,” said Jackson. Attendees may attend 1 event or all 4. Jackson advises that each event builds off the previous one so to get the most out of the series attending all 4 events is beneficial. Registration is $ 65 and is now open. Football 101 is just one of many projects that Jackson has planned for his foundation. Overall, the Steve Jackson Foundation’s mission is to help young student athletes become successful with technology athletics, and education. “You have to have knowledge to be successful. There are a lot of skills to learn in athletics that apply to everyday life,” Jackson remarked. He plans on educating some young student athletes on the concept of how they can Steve Jackson learn a lot about being successful later in life from athletics with Project 24. Through Project 24, Jackson will pick 2 high schools in Houston. From those selected high schools, he then will select a total of 24 student athletes to mentor. “I will teach them things about life skills, being able to deal with adversity and just being
www.StyleMagazine.com moc.enizagaMelytS.www
able to relate to things that they learn in athletics to everyday life,” commented Jackson. He also plans to teach them about life as a collegiate and professional football player from contract negotiations to speaking clearly for interviews and how to market themselves for top dollars. Criteria for chosen athletes will be based on their academics, athletics, and citizenship. Jackson will work with high school counselors to select students from urban and suburban school. Jackson’s own mother is the inspiration behind his desire to mentor student athletes. “She was my coach, my teacher, my principal, my police officer…she was my everything,” Jackson said with pride as he credited his mother for being his main role model. Other influencers on his life were his Klein Forest High School football coach Robert Young as well as a University of Houston football coach who recruited him to attend UH. Although Jackson went on to finish undergraduate studies at Purdue University, he said the UH coach really had a great impact on his life. “I could not have made it to the heights that I did without good role models,” Jackson said. With these programs through the Steve Jackson Foundation, he is making an investment in the next generation as people did with him. Working Out & Pregnancy

s a mother of two children now ages 8 and 20, I am grateful now more than ever for understanding the relationship between staying active during pregnancy and the affects of weight gain and strain after. Now, I have the tools to teach my clients both from a personal perspective and clinical knowledge. While every pregnancy is different and there are no hard and fast rules for each woman’s body, it is safe to say, in today’s health and fitness world, working out and pregnancy go hand in hand. In my personal experiences both of my children had their distinct differences. In my 20’s, with my first child, I was approximately 120 lbs., just a few years after competing professionally as a US Gymnast. My body was still in top condition, I was running and working out on a regular basis and my body fat was very low. I was blessed, I didn’t carry much water weight, I ate almost anything I liked and pregnancy seemed almost effortless. I didn’t show until almost my 6th month and the only complication I had was a very long 36-hour labor from hell and an emergency C-Section after the long delay of labor. For my second child in my mid thirties, things had really changed. I
was certainly at least 20-25 lbs. heavier, my lifestyle did not include regular workout, my eating habits were no longer I could eat what I want and not gain a pound. No these days were long gone and if I even smelled calories, they were sitting like bricks around my new found hips, extra full thighs and these god awful dimples all over my legs I had never seen in my 20’s called cellulite! This pregnancy was anything but effortless. Just a few years later my second child put me on bed rest from the 4th month forward. I had gestational diabetes, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, preterm labor and a horrible
case of nausea. Now, I was visited by a nurse daily and monitored via special equipment for daily stats. I had to inject myself 5-6 times daily to control the gestational diabetes and little man was suffering too. In my 5th month they projected all the additional sugar was causing excessive weight gain to the fetus and by the time I delivered I was looking at a 12-15 lb. baby! Yikes! In the end, I could not hold my little boy to term. I delivered 2 months early, with a scheduled C-section and to my worst nightmare he was still born and not breathing for 13 minutes before God put the breath of life back in his body. Could all of this been caused by poor eating habits, excessive weight gain and inactivity? No one really knows, but I can say by experience there had to be some correlations. Exercise during pregnancy can keep weight gain in check, reduce your risk of gestational diabetes, decrease discomfort, and set you up for an easier
labor and delivery. Now, new research shows that breaking a sweat, especially after 29 weeks, has a big benefit for your baby, too. In a study of 826 mothers and their babies, researchers found that mamas who exercised in their third trimester gave birth to babies with less body fat, reports the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology. In fact, women who burned the most calories through third-trimester exercise gave birth to babies with 41.1 g less fat mass compared to women who exercised the least. Getting off the couch for a little exercise can actually make you feel more relaxed. Plus, exercise can help reverse the sag in your energy level that can happen during pregnancy. Research shows that moderate exercise throughout those nine months can help you avoid excessive weight gain, lessen your risk for pregnancy complications, may even help you have an easier delivery and, of course, loose that baby fat faster after delivery. So while you should always consult with your physician first before continuing or starting a new fitness regimen, the vote is unanimous that fitness and pregnancy go great together for the mommy-to-be. -E-B is always thinking of ways to make everything better. On that thinking, the grocery store chain hosted a statewide completion called “The Quest for Texas Best” to find the best culinary delights Texas had to offer. According to a press release from H-E-B “Contest entries came from around the state after the Quest for Texas Best competition launched in February. The finalists included six product makers from the Houston area; five from the San Antonio area; four from the Dallas area; two each from Austin, the Rio Grande Valley and Waco; and one each from Beaumont, Victoria, Willis and Waxahachie.” Houston Style Maga-

zine had the privilege of interviewing Chef Dee Dee of “Deelicious Southern Cuisine Catering”, who was one of the Houston area finalists. She entered her “Red Velvet Waffle Batter”, that is a brunch favorite for many of her family, friends and clients. The idea to make the batter available for those who wanted to enjoy red velvet waffles at home came when her Sunday Brunch location closed due to building related issues. Despite the pitfalls, Chef Dee Dee maintained her joy and passion for cooking and tweaked her famous recipe for mass distribution to her vast amount of patrons that craved her decadent waffles. Her revisions helped make her standout for H-E-B’s competition and landed her a top 25 spot. Although she did not win the competition, Chef Dee Dee is grateful for the experience. She expressed her gratitude for H-E-B and their commitment to the local community. And for the variety of choices that are made available to the local consumers in their stores by offering reasonable prices and products that are made by people that live right here in the neighborhood and city. Originally from Montgomery,

Since stepping out on faith, Chef Dee Dee has experienced a bounty of blessings that came directly from her hard work. Civic Humanism Assembly on Police Brutality
“
I’m hungry, let’s go to Jack in the Box right quick,” said Robbie Tolan. Spending New Year’s Eve 2008 with his family, not out drinking, not at a wild party, Robbie Tolan and his cousin were following every law. They had on their seatbelts. They used their turn signals. Tolan, driving an SUV registered in his name, wasn’t speeding or swerving; the police officer simply entered the wrong license plate. That one mistake led to a series of events that would alter the course of several lives that night. I’ve often heard people say, “Just listen to the police and there won’t be any trouble.” Implying that if an officer shoots you then you have to had provoked him. Robbie Tolan pulled into the driveway of the house his parents owned. When police told him to get out the SUV at gunpoint with flashlights he didn’t resist. When he was told to lie on the ground face down, he didn’t resist. When his concerned mother came out the house and the officer pushed her face first into the garage, all he did was stand up and ask that he stop. That’s when he was shot. That’s when his baseball career ended. Was that provocation? Was that him, “brining it on himself?”
case that the entire events of that night were motivated by and escalated by racial profiling. On 26 of August 2014 there was a rally held outside the Federal Courthouse in Downtown Houston educating and informing the citizens of their rights. The following day Tolan got what he has been waiting for a date to finally have his day in court. Robbie Tolan’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, announced that the hearing would take place on Sept. 14, 2015. For more information about the Robbie Tolan case visit robbietolan.com. On 31 of December 2008 Bellaire officer Jeffery Cotton allegedly entered the wrong license plate number and shot an unarmed Robbie Tolan in one of the wealthier neighborhoods in Houston, TX. On 11 of May 2010 a jury of two black women and ten white men found him not guilty. Being a writer I try my best to not be bias when I’m writing a story. Stick with the facts and let the facts lead you to an honest opinion. The facts are there was never even a reason
for that Bellaire police officer to run the plates on that SUV. The facts are he could have easily asked the two men to stay in the car with their hands out the window until backup arrived. The facts are how many young African American men are stealing vehicles and bringing them to their parents’ home? I don’t care what a jury said, we all know what happened that night. Last week the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Robbie Tolan could continue to argue his

For 25 consecutive years, I have been tremendously fortunate to proudly proclaim to the uni-
verse that putting Houston Style Magazine on the global map has been my passion, and our dynamic co-host, Erik Cork, has been a member of our Houston Style team since the very beginning. As I promised in our previous issue, Houston Style Magazine’s best-kept secrets will be shared with our readers in the quickly evaporating 5 weeks leading up to our grand gala in the Galleria area on October 3rd. When Senator Barack Obama was elected as the first African American President in the history of the United States on November 4, 2008, Houston Style Magazine was one of few publication invited to the White House to meet him personally. I previously met the young Senator Obama in a rare private meeting one year earlier and was so proud that he was now the most powerful person on the planet. Soon after the historic election, Houston Style Magazine was invited to the White House to spend time with President Obama behind closed doors, even before most senators and members of Congress were invited to Barack and Michelle’s new home on Pennsylvania Avenue. It has been my honor to be the publisher of one of the most recognized and
widely respected urban weekly newspapers in all of America. Next week, be sure to log on, tweet and repost to your Facebook pages the secret behind-thescene details of how Houston Style Magazine was the very first publication on planet earth to be granted the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview young Beyonce’ & Kelly Rowland years before they formed the nucleus of the world-record, sales-smashing R&B group called Destiny’s Child. Read about how Houston Style Magazine was there! Keep HoustonStyle.com as one of your easyto-access favorites on your computer task bar so you can obtain tickets to our dazzling gala as early as possible. I strongly urge you to make plans now to attend because we are over-the-moon making preparations to bring you an amazing, star-studded, celebrity-drenched night of networking, fireworks and making new friends. In the meantime, join in the #Style25 fun on Twitter and Instagram, then like us on Facebook. Until next week, let’s keep in touch.

The key feature of the free app, released Tuesday, is a stabilization engine that takes advantage of the iPhone’s built-in gyroscope to keep images from shaking. ick-tock! Clear up some space on your wrist. It might finally be iWatch time on September 9. Influential tech new site Re/code reported Wednesday that Apple may unveil a wearable device next month at the same event where it is expected to debut the iPhone 6. Shares of Apple were up more than 1.5% to a new all-time high of above $102 a share. For more information, visit cnn.com.
