onald Trump made a pitch for black votes this week, in his own inimitable fashion. Speaking in a virtually all-white suburb of Detroit, he suggested that African-American communities are “suffering from Democratic control.” “What do you have to lose by trying something new like Trump. What do you have to lose?” he said to absent African-Americans. “You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed.” This appeal for votes will fall on deaf ears. Most African-Americans don’t live in poverty, even though too many do. Most have jobs, even though too few do. More people in poverty are white, young and female. Trump has little relationship with the black community and isn’t making any effort to create one. Most African-Americans consider him a bigot. (Four out of five

In recognition of those who have proudly served our country, METRO is currently offering qualified veterans this earned access when using High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes,” Jackson Lee said while surrounded by decorated war veterans and others at a downtown facility for Houston’s veterans. “Before hopping on the lanes, veterans must register with METRO and display a qualifying license plate. The HOV lanes connect from every direction, giving easy inner city access now to single occupant commuters,” said Congresswoman Jackson Lee. “As a United States Congresswoman, I believe it’s important to provide the best quality of life for our veterans by providing access to jobs, healthcare, education, and a convenient way to travel to get to those jobs,

African-Americans view him unfavorably, and slightly more think he’s biased against minorities and women.) President Obama won over nine of 10 African-American votes in 2012 when he ran for re-election. The black community is obviously proud of the dignity with which he has carried himself in office and the values which his family displayed. Trump earned our contempt for continuing to question Obama’s birth certificate, trying to slur him as literally un-American. Not surprisingly, Trump polls in the low single digits -- 2 or 3 percent -- among African-Americans. He’s running fourth behind the Libertarian and the Green candidates as well as behind Clinton. The African-American vote hasn’t always been Democratic. With Democrats anchored in the Jim Crow South, many African-Americans voted Republican before 1960. Dr. Martin Luther King’s father was a Republican voter. But Democrats reached out to African-Americans, and Lyndon Johnson championed the end of segregation, the right to vote and more. Democrats didn’t inherit black votes, they earned them. And recent efforts by Republican judges to disembowel the Voting Rights Act and by Republican state legislators and governors to limit the right to vote in ways that disproportionately impact African-Americans are teaching a new generation the same lesson. African-Americans were a ma-
jor part of the coalition that Hillary Clinton put together to win the Democratic nomination, and we will be a major part of the coalition she’s putting together to win the presidency. But Trump does have a point. African-Americans have suffered significantly from the stacked deck that characterizes our economy. We were the biggest victims of what the FBI called an “epidemic of fraud” in the housing bubble. We lost more ground than whites in the Great Recession. We suffer higher unemployment, a racially biased criminal justice system and inadequate public schools. Recent reports showing that poor African-Americans in Milwaukee and in other cities are living in more isolated neighborhoods, with more segregated schools, worse household incomes and greater incidence of concentrated poverty than that witnessed in Birmingham, Ala. in 1963 near the beginnings of the modern civil rights movement are clearly alarming. As the first black president, Obama enjoyed a deep wellspring of support among African-Americans. We had his back. Clinton will not enjoy that unstinting loyalty. African-Americans will be making demands -- as Black Lives Matter has already done -- and looking for results. If disappointed, they may never get back to voting for a Republican Party that seems intent on locking them out if not up, but they may end up staying home in larger and larger
numbers. We need a targeted program to rebuild our inner cities. We need investment in jobs, housing and schools, as well as massive criminal justice reform. Hillary Clinton, periodically, talks about the Rep. James Clyburn’s 10-20-30 plan. This calls for earmarking 10 percent of government spending for the 474 communities that have had 20 percent of the population in poverty for more than 30 years. As Clyburn notes, this isn’t a blacks-only program. These communities are both majority Democrat and majority Republican; they are urban and they are rural. They include Appalachian whites, Alaskan Native Americans, urban Latinos and more. 10-20-30 won’t solve the problems of Chicago’s South Side or Milwaukee’s north side, but it will demonstrate a clear concern for those struggling the most. That, along with reforming our criminal justice system and ending mass incarceration that has destroyed so many lives, would begin to revive hope. Without that, Clinton will find that our cities are tinderboxes, ready to blow. Democrats are going to have to work to earn black votes again, not simply inherit them. You can write to the Rev. he fix won’t be quick. It never is. There’s no magic wand to change the things that’ve been on your mind lately: social issues, inequality, poverty, politics, apathy, violence. Those ills didn’t arrive quick and they won’t leave quick but, says Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, they can be repaired. In his new book “Writings on the Wall” (with Raymond Obstfeld), he explains… When people ask Abdul-Jabbar what he might’ve become, had he not played NBA basketball, his answer often surprises them: he would’ve been a history teacher. History fascinates him – especially in the way it reflects racism, religious intolerance, and gender issues. In history, as in current events, the truth is sometimes bent. Take, for instance, politics, which is on everyone’s mind. We rail and complain about issues and promises broken and we like to think it’s all out of our hands. The truth is that we are the problem: we grow complacent about things we don’t want, acting “like children when it comes to politics” and hoping the government will “take care of us,” rather than taking steps to fix the system ourselves. White people may deny that racism exists, says Abdul-Jabbar, while Black people know that it does. Racism didn’t stop with the election of the nation’s first Black president. It doesn’t end with melting-pot cultural appropriation. It actually comes in two forms, he says, and education is the first step in dealing with it, not eliminating it, because racism is always going to be around. On religion, we should never lose sight of the fact that this “country was founded by religious

A spokesperson for the group said the NAACP had failed “in speaking out against the atrocities” that pro-black organizations have caused against white police officers. NAACP responded by stating, Racism is a longstanding and divisive issue in this country, and many people at first feel victimized when confronted with the facts of how it continues to affect the lives of millions. But a misguided sense of victimhood does not justify brandishing weapons on a Sunday afternoon in a residential neighborhood, or make the statements of this small group true or correct. KHOU reports that beginning in December, not paying your child support will impact your ability to renew your car registration. If you missed paying child support for six straight months, you’re going to have to start paying again, before you can renew. outcasts running for their lives from persecution for their beliefs.” When it comes to equality for women, we must embrace the true meaning of “feminist” and adhere to what we tell pollsters when it comes to gender. We need to look at the media and how to maximize its potential, and we must take better care of our seniors. “We cannot afford to just wring out hands and depend on the kindness of strangers,” Abdul-Jabbar says. “We have to bring about change on our own.” Remember when your grade school teacher told you to put on your thinking cap? You’ll need it again as you’re reading “Writings on the Wall.” Authors Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld don’t just examine issues that are on the minds of every American. They turn them over and blow them apart, looking for solutions that can be accomplished and chiding us gently for not already working. That makes for a thought-demanding, intellectually heavy book but it’s also a worthy call to action; you may also be delighted to see that AbdulJabbar doesn’t miss a chance to add a touch of the personal here, which includes quietly unexpected humor. Readers with the right mindset will find this book to be informative and entertaining but be prepared to take your time get the most from it. There aren’t a lot of pages inside “Writings on the Wall,” but what’s here is deep and wide and nowhere near quick. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine.com.

Award-winning Civil Rights Journalist and Black Press Columnist George Curry Dead at 69
By Hazel Trice Edney, Special to Style
P
ioneering Civil rights and Black political journalist George E. Curry, the reputed dean of Black press columnists because of his riveting weekly commentary in Black newspapers across the country, died suddenly of heart failure on Saturday, August 20. He was 69. Rumors of his death circulated heavily in journalistic circles on Saturday night until it was confirmed by Dr. Bernard Lafayette, MLK confidant and chairman of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference shortly before midnight. “This is a tragic loss to the movement because George Curry was a journalist who paid special attention to civil rights because he lived it and loved it,” Lafayette said through his spokesman Maynard Eaton, SCLC national communications director. Curry’s connection to the SCLC was through his longtime childhood friend, confidant and ally in civil rights, Dr. Charles Steele, SCLC president. Lafayette said Dr. Steele was initially too distraught to make the announcement himself and was also awaiting notification of Curry’s immediate family. Steele and Curry grew up together in Tuscaloosa, Ala. where Curry bloomed as a civil rights and sports writer as Steele grew into a politician and civil rights leader. Curry began his journalism career at Sport Illustrated, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and then the Chicago Tribune. But he is perhaps best known for his editorship of the former Emerge

Magazine and more recently for his work as editor-in-chief for the National Newspaper Publishers Association from 2000-2007 and again from 2012 until last year. His name is as prominent among civil rights circles as among journalists. He traveled with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and appeared weekly to do commentary on the radio show of the Rev. Al Sharpton, “Keepin’ It Real.” When he died he was raising money to fully fund Emerge News Online, a digital version of the former paper magazine. He had also continued to distribute his weekly column to Black newspapers. Few details of his death were readily

Mental Stress May Reduce Blood Flow in Young Women With Heart Disease
M
ental stress m a y reduce blood flow in the heart muscle of younger women with coronary heart disease, according to new research. Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in American men and women, but studies show that younger women have higher rates of complications and death after a heart attack compared to men. “Younger women tend to have quite a lot of stress in their lives,” said Viola Vaccarino, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. “Many of them have full-time jobs and at the same time have numerous responsibilities at home, financial hardship, as well as depression and anxiety. “Clinicians should ask about stress and emotional difficulties in these patients

and recommend ways to help, such as finding time to relax and exercise.” The study included 686 patients (191 women) 34 to 79 years old with coronary heart disease. Researchers used imaging tests to take pictures of the patients’ hearts before and during mental stress, and then examined changes in blood flow between men and women, with age as a factor. They found stress-induced reduced blood flow happened more often in younger women compared with men and older women. It occurred in 33 percent of women age 50 or younger compared with 8 percent of men of similar ages. Researchers also found that the difference between men and women decreased with age and disappeared in older patients. The frequency of reduced blood flow almost doubled in women compared to men for every 10-year decrease in age. The study is published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

available Sunday morning. Reactions and memorial information will be forthcoming. The following is his edited speaker’s biography as posted on the website of America’s Program Bureau: George E. Curry is former editor-inchief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service. The former editorin-chief of Emerge magazine, Curry also writes a weekly syndicated column for NNPA, a federation of more than 200 African American newspapers. Curry, who served as editor-in-chief of the NNPA News Service from 2001 until 2007, returned to lead the news service for a second time on April 2, 2012. His work at the NNPA has ranged from being inside the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments in the University of Michigan affirmative action cases to traveling to Doha, Qatar, to report on America’s war with Iraq. As editor-in-chief of Emerge, Curry led the magazine to win more than 40 national journalism awards. He is most proud of his fouryear campaign to win the release of Kemba Smith, a 22-year-old woman who was given a mandatory sentence of 24 1/2 years in prison for her minor role in a drug ring. In May 1996, Emerge published a cover story titled “Kemba’s Nightmare.” President Clinton pardoned Smith in December 2000, marking the end of her nightmare.

In 2004, Rainbow of Love became a Licensed State of Texas Adoption Agency. Rainbow of Love’s staff are active in the Harris and Fort Bend County community and the staff participate in various Leadership, Community, Volunteer and Network activities on a monthly basis. The multicultural staff speaks several languages and they each have an affinity for helping mothers and mothers to be with their own story to tell. Some women come to Rainbow of Love because they are faced with an unplanned pregnancy and it is absolutely not the right time for them to parent a child, so they choose Adoption. Others come to Rainbow of Love because they have a young child that they are unable to parent and they want the child to have a successful life and not be placed in foster care. The woman can choose between a Closed (Confidential), Semi-Open or Open Adoption. The mother can select the adoptive parents and make important decisions with the adoptive parents before birth. Help is also available to the mothers. All of ROL’s adoptive parents are thoroughly screened via background, medical, references and extensive interviews in their home. At least one of the parents is required to be a Professional and the parents are required to have
Rainbow of Love Adoptions and More… financial stability and live in a permanent residence. ROL’s desire is to give the Mother of the child a secure sense of knowing that her baby is not just being placed with strangers who look pretty in pictures, but the baby is being placed in a secure home with parents who are prepared for parenting. The Internet has changed the adoption industry quite a bit. Now anyone desiring to adopt can post pictures and write a story about themselves, the troubling aspect of the Internet is a lot can be embellished and there is no “independent 3rd party verification” that what is said is true or that the parents are truly happy and secure. When placing a child through Rainbow of Love Adoptions or any Licensed Adoption Agency the adoptive applicants have to be thoroughly screened and adhere to strict standards for the protection of the child. An added benefit of placing a child through Rainbow of Love is the the ongoing direct update the birthmothers have access to. Birthmother can view (photos of the child) or post pictures and notes at any time (by utilizing the secure program that ROL subscribes to) and can receive an annual album of those photos as long as a mailing address is provided. This ongoing contact will
continue for the 18 years of the child’s life. Rainbow of Love also help mothers who are parenting an Infant or Toddler and just need support items. ROL has programs that support mothers as well as an ongoing donation center where items are distributed monthly to those in need. The programs include: Holiday, Easter, Mother’s Day, and Disaster Assistance and Parenting Classes. Holidays/Christmas – ROL provides diapers, car seats and gifts to the Infants and Toddlers. Easter – ROL provides new Easter Dresses, new Easter Suits and an Easter Baskets to each Infant and Toddler. Mother Day – ROL provides the “Mothers” with an appreciation poem, gift bag full of goodies and a Fruit Basket. Disaster Assistance – Any mother of a young child who is experiencing a disaster: fire, flood, hurricane, homelessness can contract ROL for food, clothing, baby items and referrals. Parenting Classes – Held weekly for those who are court ordered or need to take a parenting class to improve their parenting skills. Rainbow of Love accepts donations of new or unused children’s clothes, toys and baby items, food, gift cards and contributions. Call (713) 779-8877 to schedule a pick up of your donated items. Set sail on the resort’s 53’ catamaran Heavenly Days, voted “the best excursion of the year in St. Thomas’. From snorkeling to swimming with sea turtles or just a relaxing cocktail cruise, the Heavily Days is a Caribbean experience one simply cannot miss. FOODIE RECOMMENDATIONS
T
he connection between Texas & the US Virgin Islands is a bit deeper than you think. It’s not just Tim Duncan being the country’s biggest export to the state, its the vast amount of Texans that travel from the Lone Star state to the beautiful island. Over 30,000 Texans vacation in the US Virgin
Islands every year and that number could be expected to grow over time. United Airlines officially has regularly scheduled flights to the island and Houston Style was part of the inaugural flight to one of the Virgin Islands’ most prominent locales: St. Thomas. St. Thomas is part of a trio of islands that fly under the US Virgin Island umbrella. St. John & also St. Croix have been vacation hubs for couples, traveling singles and passionate travel enthusiasts for years. All of the proper ideas of a beach filter through the mind when thinking of St. John, St. Thomas & St. Croix: picturesque blue water, white, smooth beaches and the occasional mixed drink with a mini-umbrella thrown in to complete the dream. Since all three islands are technically US territory, visitors do not need passports in order to visit there. St. Thomas is the transportation hub of the Virgin Islands; the centerpiece of the V.I. system as one simply cannot leave the islands without gracing its soil. Visitors who maintain a longer stay on the isle may be drawn by the legendary shopping venues, the wide variety of water sports, activities, beaches and other accommodations.
The bustling port of Charlotte Amalie is the main town, while Red Hook sits on the eastern tip. The west end of the island is relatively wild; an open sprawl while hotels and resorts situated along the rim of the southern and eastern shores.
LODGING RECOMMENDATIONS

Traditional Caribbean dishes are emphasized and are born strictly from ingredients that are fresh and local thanks to on-site chef Shaun Brian. Glady’s Bar and Restaurant (www. gladyscafe.com) located in Charlotte Amalievis the go to spot for authentic Caribbean cuisine. The conch fritters and callalo soup are a favorite of both the locals and returning tourists to the island. While trying the authentic island cuisine is highly recommended, trust us when we say to order the chips and guacamole as a starter. True, its a dish that most Texans could argue sounds best coming from home but what works with Glady’s styling of chips & guac are something that couldn’t truly be described. Simply put, they have the best chips I’ve ever had. What are you waiting for? Book your next beach destination and enjoy the beautiful beaches of the US Virgin Islands. * Make sure to visit the tourism board website at www.visitusvi.com for current promotions being offered. * Be on the lookout for next week’s edition of Houston Style as we share more about lodging on the island of St. John and all of the great sights to see.
Style recommends lodging at Bolongo Bay. Located on the island of St. Thomas, Bologna Bay Resort is the place to reside if you’re not looking to break the bank. With over twenty-five beachfront rooms and 39 ocean view rooms overlooking a secluded palm-lined beach, Bolongo Bay is truly a gem. In 2014, Thrillist ranked it amongst one of the 25 best beaches in America. What the resort rooms lack in amenities and plushness, the friendly and attentive staff definitely makes up for it. The resort both contains roomonly rates as well as an all-inclusive plan to fit your financial needs.
