his year in the NBA playoffs, LeBron James silenced all the chatterers who questioned his legacy. He put his team, decimated by injuries, on his back and willed them to the NBA finals. He showed that he is the greatest basketball player in the game today. Off the court, LeBron is building an even greater legacy, one that provides a model for athletes and leaders across the country. This month, while hosting an event for 5,000 students and their parents in his I Promise program at an amusement park, James announced that his foundation was teaming up with the University of Akron to provide a potential scholarship -- a full ride of tuition and fees worth $38,000 over four years -- to each of the approximately 1,000 students now in the “I Promise” program and to 1,300 more scheduled to be enlisted. James was raised in Akron by a single mother who struggled to

Scholarship Program Establishes LeBron’s Legacy Off the Court survive. On rising to prominence and wealth, he set up the LeBron James Family Foundation, which has focused on giving back to that community and helping at-risk kids. James has done more than donate money. He’s devoted time and energy through his foundation to build a remarkable program. And he’s leveraged his stature to enlist other institutions as partners. The I Promise program seeks to raise the graduation rate in Akron public schools. It sponsors a six-year program that provides mentoring, tutoring and after-school and summer school programs for at-risk youth. JP Morgan Chase provides technology staffers as volunteers to help ensure the kids stay on track for graduation. The scholarship program is similarly leveraged. The University of Akron guarantees a full scholarship for every student in the I Promise program who graduates from high school with the appropriate grades and test scores for admission. Akron President Scott Scarborough said the university would join with the foundation to raise funds to support the scholarships. The first wave of students will come in 2021. “These students have big dreams,” LeBron said, “and I’m happy to do everything I can to help them get there. They’re going to have to earn it, but I’m excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their futures.”

James, who bypassed college to jump directly to the NBA, understands just how important this is. “As a kid growing up in the inner city and a lot of African-American kids, you don’t really think past high school,” he said. “You don’t really know your future. You hear high school all the time, and you graduate high school and then you never think past that because either it’s not possible or your family’s not financially stable to even be able to support a kid going to college.” Ohio.com reported on Tracy Griffin, a single mom raising three kids and working two jobs, who was nearly moved to tears by the announcement. “Just to know I don’t have to worry about that ... to suddenly find I’m a parent who doesn’t have to worry about their child’s future, it’s a blessing,” Griffin said. Hugging her daughter Bria, aged 10, she said, “I don’t want her to struggle like I did.” “I’m so happy,” Bria exclaimed, adding that she wants to be either a veterinarian or a pediatrician. Michele Campbell, the executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation, said James became visibly emotional when discussing the impact the program could have on these kids. “He has a chance to change their futures,” Campbell said. “Not everybody can be an NBA superstar, so to be able to provide the framework

to make your dreams come true is overpowering.” Many great athletes have difficulty dealing with the wealth and prominence that they suddenly gain at a very young age. We read often about their excesses and their mishaps. LeBron is providing an exemplary model of what can be possible. His focus -- on saving at-risk kids growing up in the inner city -- is clear. His core value -- that they must work hard to earn what they get -- is sound. His commitment -- that his foundation will give them the tools, tutors, support and resources to reach their potential -- is the game changer. LeBron has only begun to demonstrate his greatness on the court. And at a remarkably young age, with rare intelligence and grace, he is already creating his legacy off the court. Thousands of young children growing up on hard streets with the deck stacked against them are being given a real chance because LeBron has decided to be a hero not only on the court but in his community. Too often we hear about those who go wrong. Let’s celebrate LeBron James, who is surely going right. You can write to the Rev. Big Ballot Finally Formalized For Fall Elections

Burt Levine, Political Writer

W

ith about 60 days left to Houston’s November 3rd general elections, a bigger ballot than was believed a week ago was finally set in stone this past Monday, August 24th, with the deadline to file for space on the City of Houston, Houston ISD and Houston Community College Board ballots for what Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart expects will bring voter turnout numbers rivaling popular presidential races. It is no doubt that Houston’s first open mayor race and controller contest in six years coupled with all five at large council seats competitively contested, the eight of 11 district seats being contested, and the open and competitive races for HISD and HCC will bring unprecedented people to the polls. But the big draw is HERO, Mayor Annise Parker’s Houston Equal Rights Ordinance that adds sexual preference and gender identity to a list of protected civil rights classes according to Stanart who is responsible for running Harris County’s elections. Those against HERO are campaigning that it would open the tradition of gender segregated public restrooms, locker rooms and showers to anyone of any gender. Candidates who have officially filed and will be on the November 3rd ballot are as follows: The 13 mayor candidates are

Wells Fargo Creates ‘Steps to Better Banking’

New offerings make opening a checking account simple, easy

W

ells Fargo & Company announced its ‘Steps to Better Banking’ initiative, which makes the experience of opening an account easier for the millions of consumers who choose a banking relationship with Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo serves over 22 million Retail Bank households, and through May of this year, household growth was the strongest in four years, and primary consumer checking customers increased 5.6 percent year-over-year*. “More than a year ago, we set out to look at every experience a checking or savings account customer might have as they open an account with Wells Fargo, and our goal was to make the experience simple and easy,” said Erin Constantine, head of Consumer Checking and Savings for Wells Fargo. “We listened and learned a lot, and ‘Steps to Better Banking’ is the result, which sets the tone for how we help customers succeed financially.” For example, most

recently, a new customized welcome email was introduced that is sent to a customer within one hour of opening a checking or savings account. The email thanks the customer for choosing Wells Fargo and its extensive network of approximately 6,200 retail bank locations, 24/7 phone bank, and 12,800 ATMs. It includes a summary of the deposit accounts opened with Wells Fargo, and details about how to avoid service fees. The email provides several ways to contact the bank, including online, by phone and by visiting a branch. The email is signed by the banker and store manager, with a phone number that connects directly to the branch. The email also includes other helpful resources related to the customer’s new Wells Fargo relationship. Other enhancements have included: Updated Consumer Account Agreement and Fee and Information Schedule in plainlanguage style that seeks to turn regulatory and legal language into terms and explanations that are more readily understood by customers.

Paperless ‘New Account Disclosure Kits,’ which are emailed during the account opening, greatly reducing the reliance on paper and offering a more convenient option to customers. “ A g u i d e t o y o u r common checking account fees” in English and Spanish, which provides a brief, straightforward overview of potential fees. N e w We l l s F a rg o customers have additional opportunities to make managing their accounts easy: Checking Account Quick Start Guide – a handy website highlighting tools and tips for getting the most out of a new account. Automatic linkage of new accounts to the customer’s secure Online Banking session. Timely alerts for eligible account transactions. Alerts give the status of account activities at a glance and help customers monitor their accounts. Wells Fargo offers more than a dozen different consumer deposit alerts that can be sent by email or to a wireless device.** Greater visibility

into pending Automated Clearing House (ACH) and check transactions within secure Online Banking. This can alert customers to a pending payment, allowing them to make a deposit to cover the transaction i f n e c e s s a r y, and avoid overspending. Monthly service fee summary included in print or online statements and within secure Online Banking. The summary provides specific information for the account about the monthly service fee and ways to waive the fee. Additionally, educational information is conveniently available online. A number of short videos have been created to help customers with common questions around setting up account alerts, direct deposit, using your debit card and more. Wells Fargo has also created the “Making

ReShonda Tate Billingsley: ‘A Blessed Girl From The Plaza’

Rashonda Tate Billingsley

M

ama always said ‘be kind to others.’ The Bible teaches to be kind to your fellow brethren. Being kind is a good thing for all to follow in their inactions with people because it is just simple human decency. And being kind is also good for business success. Houstonian and best selling author ReShonda Tate Billingsley is always in the market of promoting her books whether that be with her publisher, corporate executives or everyday people. If you are a book lover, Billingsley is your #1 fan. However one day in her routine of life, she happened to buy one of her books for a woman who wanted something good to read. Billingsley didn’t think anything of the gesture nor did she want anything in return. Little did she know how far that simple act would take her in business. Any good thing gets passed on for others to enjoy. After the woman read Billingsley’s book she passed on her good thing to her sister who just so happened to work at an airport bookstore. One day while working Rev. Juanita Bynum walked into the sister’s bookstore looking for a good read. Of course, the sister recommended Billingsley’s book. Bynum loved it and asked Billingsley if she could take to Hollywood. Of course, Billingsley was like when and what time. That one act of kindness started Billingsley on

8

a journey that was only in her dreams of her top selling book “Let the Church Say Amen” go from words read on a page to words spoken on the Hollywood stage. “It goes to show you how one act of kindness can have long lasting results,” said a grateful Billingsley. After years of red tape, “Let the Church Say Amen” will at last make its small screen debut this Saturday, August 29th on BET at 8P/7C. The film that is executively produced by T.D. Jakes, co-produced by Queen Latifah and directed by Regina King stars Steve Harris, Naturi Naughton, Lela Rochon, Hosea Chanchez and Collins Pennie. It is the tale of a family going through trials with a lost daughter searching for redemption. It is a gripping story of reconciliation and love. Unlike with most authors whose books become movies, Billingsley was fully involved with

Rashonda Tate Billingsley

www.StyleMagazine.com

most aspects of the production. She learned it takes a lot to scale down a 300+plus page novel to a 90-page script. It made her appreciate the creative process even more. She found herself giddy at times on set as she was in awe of the actors and the process but had to remember to keep it professional. She was further shocked when the highly trained actors asked her what she thought of their performance as they wanted to ensure they were doing her characters justice. “They had the upmost respect for me as a writer,” said Billingsley who describe the experience as one she will never forget. As a result of her new film, Billingsley can also add the role of actress to her resume. She makes a cameo appearance as a deaconess. Only two of her original six lines made the final edits of the film. Billingsley joked that she was so excited on set that when it was time for her to act out her part that she really gave it her all using inspiration from actress Angela Bassett. King told Billingsley to bring it down a bit because she was wasn’t even giving her Angela Bassett’s cousin, to which Billingsley fell out laughing. “They really worked me,” joked Billingsley, who dreamed of being an actress. At least for now, Billingsley is putting her acting shoes aside since she is all in to promoting her 37th book “Mama’s Boy” that she is currently on tour for. Plus she is writing book number 38 and managing her publishing company Brown Girls Publishing that she owns with fellow author Victoria Christopher Murray. The rate at which the company is succeeding has really blown the owners’ minds as they now have 24 published authors, three imprints and are catching the attention of the big six in New York. Their rooster is full until 2017 and they are still nurturing young talent where they mentor teen authors and those adult individuals looking to break into the industry. As the self dubbed “ordinary girl doing extraordinary things” star continues to rise fans could see more of her work on the small screen in the near future as BET executives were so enthralled with “Let the Church Say Amen” that they bought the rights to the entire Amen series. That includes three additional novels – “Know I’ve Been Changed,” “Everybody Say Amen” and “Say Amen Again.” No word yet on how BET will develop the other books. It is Billingsley’s dream that they will be turned into a series, which is a viable option. “It just depends on how well it (“Let the Church Say Amen movie”) does,” said Billingsley. Do your part and tune in to BET on Saturday, August 29th at 7P/8C to watch “Let the Church Say Amen” and tell your friends to watch too. Houston’s Latino Veterans Remembered at the Houston Public Library

W

hen the United States declared war on December 8, 1941, Latinos in Houston were among the thousands that rushed to enlist. Despite an atmosphere of prejudice that existed in Houston and other parts of the nation, an estimated 500,000 Latinos stepped forward willingly as Americans to join the cause. Through archival documents and photographs held at

the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, and through oral histories conducted by staff and volunteers, the Houston Public Library’s exhibit reflects the experiences of and pays homage to Houston’s Latina and Latino veterans of the Second World War. The exhibits runs from August 29-November 14, 2015. For more information, visit www.houstonlibrary.org.

J.Cole: 2014 Forrest Hills Drive Tour Hits the Woodlands

Caldwell, Online Editor

D

espite a 45-minute rain delay and plenty of young fans trying their best to get a closer view, nothing could hold off J.Cole or Big Sean from enthralling fans at a more than sold out Cynthia Woods show last Friday night. The latest leg of the 2014 Forest Hills Drive Tour, fans battled a lengthy delay on two fronts before Big Sean took the stage, almost an hour after his scheduled appearance. While Sean flipped through his catalog filled with radio smash singles such as “My Last”, “IDFWU” and “Blessed”, Cole opted to stay with his platinum selling third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. He was impressionable, telling jokes about not really know what an “LED light” was or how awkward it is looking at Instagram models with deep captions that don’t match the photos or how people should chase their dreams. In between all of the jokes and anecdotes, Cole commanded a crowd of all ages to rap nearly word for word with him. It didn’t matter if they were diehards or fans who just came aboard, Cole made them all seem like family. Sean and Cole were the leaders of the pack Friday night, closing out a tour date that featured Los Angeles Calif, rapper YG and Chicago crooner Jeremih. Had it not been for the rain, it may have been a perfect night for a rap fan of this current generation. Two personable favorites, two rappers who had started from performing at smaller venues like Warehouse Live and House of Blues to hundreds to now captivating tens of thousands. They seemed appreciative of the moment, standing in awe at the massive crowd at The Pavilion and at times, in awe of what they’ve gone through to get here. NATIONAL

In Katrina Commemoration, Obama to Cite Inequities ‘Brewing for Decades’

By CNN

P

resident Barack Obama returns to an outwardly thriving New Orleans Thursday to mark strides 10 years after Hurricane Katrina. But underneath the visible recovery lie persistent racial and economic inequities that haven’t receded a decade since the storm. Tens of thousands of African-Americans fled New Orleans after Katrina hit, never to return. The city’s poverty rate has remained near 30%. And according to one analysis, African-American households in the city earn more than 50% less than their white counterparts -- well above the national average. Those barometers of racial inequality aren’t unique to New Orleans, and haven’t dampened the city’s enthusiasm for what has otherwise been a steady recovery that includes new construction, jobs and visitors. But the now-chronic gaps between rich and poor, and whites and blacks, were poised to provide a sober backdrop for Obama’s tour of the hardhit Lower Ninth Ward on Thursday, where he plans to visit residents and assess the district’s recovery. In 2010, when Obama marked the five-year anniversary of Katrina in the second year of his presidency, he scarcely mentioned the issues of racial disparity that plagued the city, both before and after the storm, despite speaking at the historically black Xavier University in Gert Town. Now in his second term, the President has become more open about addressing issues of race, including the opportunity gap visible in inner-cities around the country. On Thursday he’ll argue Hurricane Katrina “started out as a natural disaster” but “became a man-made one -- a failure of government to look out for its own citizens,” according to excepts of his speech released by the White House. “What that storm revealed was another tragedy -- one that had been brewing for decades,” Obama will say. “New Orleans had long been plagued by structural inequality that left too many people, especially poor people of color, without good jobs or affordable health care or decent housing. Too many kids grew up surrounded by violent crime, cycling through substandard schools where few had a shot to break out of poverty.” “We acknowledge this loss, this pain, not to harp on what happened -- but to memorialize it,” he will say. “We do this not in order to dwell in the past, but in order to keep moving forward.”

12

Book-ended by major events promoting his environmental agenda, Obama isn’t planning to use the storm’s anniversary to make another push to curb climate change, though the White House said Obama would hold a roundtable meeting to discuss steps to prevent

eliminating bureaucratic barriers to rebuilding New Orleans, and to point to projects like an overhauled school system and newly rebuilt hospital as examples of a city on the upswing. “This is a city that slowly, unmistakably, together, is moving for-

the type of infrastructure collapse that devastated the Gulf Coast after Katrina hit. Instead, he’s expected to tout his administration’s steady success in

ward,” Obama plans to say. “Because the project of rebuilding here wasn’t simply to restore the city as it had been. It was to build a city as it should be -- a city where everyone, no matter who they

are or what they look like or how much money they’ve got -- has an opportunity to make it.” In the mostly African-American Lower Ninth Ward, where Obama plans to visit, the recovery efforts are varied: he’ll speak at a multi-million dollar community center, built with the help of federal funds after Katrina, that sits only blocks from the abandoned cars and blighted lots that have become symbols of a slow recovery. Just more than 50% of the neighborhood’s housing units are now occupied, according to figures from the Data Center, which has tracked statistics in New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. The population in 2010 was just more than 2,000 -- 80% smaller than before the storm. The average household income stands at $33,557 per year -- $4,000 less than it was in 2000, five years before the storm. Nearly one-third of the population lives below the poverty line, more than twice the national average. In his remarks, Obama will acknowledge the neighborhood’s sometimes halting recovery, saying a speech in the Lower Ninth Ward might have “seemed unlikely” in the years immediately following Katrina but that forward-thinking residents had rallied together to reconstruct their neighborhood. “That, more than any other reason, is why I’ve come back here today,” he will say. In some ways, Obama’s language Thursday most closely echoes his remarks on Katrina from before he became president, including a 2007 speech wading into the racial disparities visible in the federal Katrina response. Though he told a church crowd then that the administration of then-President George W. Bush was “colorblind in its incompetence” during its response to Katrina, he suggested the storm exposed long-festering inequalities in the city. “Everyone here knows the disaster and the poverty happened long before that hurricane hit,” Obama said then. “All the hurricane did was make bare what we ignore each and every day, which is that there are whole sets of communities that are impoverished, that don’t have meaningful opportunity, that don’t have hope and they are forgotten.” For more information, visit www.cnn.com.

BOOK REVIEW

Lillian’s Right to Vote

ow many leaves are on the tree outside your window? That’s a question you may not be able to answer. How could you even count them all? Would you ever get an answer that’s right? It’s a silly question, for sure, and probably not very important. In the new book “Lillian’s Right to Vote” by Jonah Winter & Shane W. Evans, you’ll see why someone would even ask. Lillian stands at the bottom of a “very steep hill.” It’s Voting Day and she’s going to take advantage of her rights. As she looks up the hill, she sees things – not just a hill, but a slave auction. There are her great-greatgrandparents: Elijah is wearing chains and Sarah is holding a baby. Lillian sees that they’re standing near a courthouse where only white men could vote. It’s a long way up that hill and, as she climbs, Lillian sees more history: once a baby at that auction, her greatgrandfather, Edmund grew up to pick cotton. He didn’t have any more rights than his own parents did – at least not until after the Civil War. Lillian can see Great-Grandpa Edmund, post-War, on his way to vote for the very first time. He approaches the polls, looking dignified in his finest clothes; Great-Grandma Ida is there,

too, but she can’t vote yet. That, as Lillian knows, is many years away. Then the hill seems to become higher, and the climb gets harder. Lillian sees her grandpa, Isaac, but he’s not voting because of a poll tax that he has no hope of paying. She hears her Uncle Levi, telling stories about impossible questions that had to be answered before anyone with brown skin could step up to cast a vote. She sees the same angry faces that surrounded her when she was a child, and women finally were allowed to vote. White women, that is. Not people like Lillian. Stopping in the middle of the hill, Lillian remembers. Once, she registered to vote and had to take a test that she didn’t pass. People were hurt and killed over votes. She starts walking again, soon reaching the voting place. And Lillian steps to the door… Did you ever buy a book for the kids that you ended up keeping for yourself? That’s what could happen once you’ve found “Lillian’s Right to Vote” – and that’s okay. I think you’ll understand it more than your children will anyhow. There’s no doubt in my mind that kids will love this book. Sharpeyed children, those who wonder what the presidential-candidate fuss is about, will get a basic history of the importance

of voting. Children in this books’ target age (3-to-6-year-olds) will appreciate the story that authors Jonah Winter & Shane W. Evans tell here. For sure, they’ll all enjoy the illustrations. The real goodness in this book, however, is that becoming a children’s picture story doesn’t at all diminish its power. Indeed, “Lillian’s Right to Vote” is ten feet tall, and it’s something neither you nor your child will be able to leave. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

HEALTH

3 Powerful Reasons Your Fitness Goals Fail

By Jade

Gold, Health Writer

S

uccessfully reaching most fitness goals takes time, effort and dedication; concepts that in today’s culture are seemingly more and more foreign from every aspect. We have the infamous “Hollywood or Celebrity Diets”, liposuction, any number of plastic surgeries, shakes, pills, lotions, potions, drops, detoxes and if all else fails you just Photoshop yourself to look like whatever or whomever you want. But, at the end of the day I personally still have faith in knowing, some people are working hard to reach their fitness goals and just need to understand a few reasons why their efforts maybe leaving them short of the results they are working for. #1 – Lack of Intensity We have all seen women and men in the gym doing what seems insane to the average gym go’er, and we have seen the ones in the gym that make you wonder why they came just to take up space in the gym. The truth is, there is a little method to some of the madness. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense burst of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, and recovery periods. This type of training is one of my favorites and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. The reason why intense exercise will help burn fat and more calories than regular aerobic exercise has everything to do with the “After Burn” or the calories you burn after the workout is done. #2- Stress This is especially significant to women who are trying to loose weight. We may not nourish ourselves adequately and stress has physiological changes that happen in our bodies and one culprit is weight gain. Adrenal glands govern our stress response, by secreting hormones relative to your stress levels and functions in our body. When the adrenal glands are overworked, the body prepares for disaster and starts storing fat and calories. We crave foods, thus, the late night run to Kroger for Blue Bell, or need for salty or sweet foods, a bottle of red wine and a block of cheese or whole pizza. In this process there is a stress hormone called cortisol and it is the main reason for belly fat! Starting to get the picture yet? #3- Too Much Cardio Yes, there is such a thing as too much cardio and for those of us who hate even the minimal amount of cardio, this is still good news. Did you know that the first 15 minutes of cardio is useless? While it is a key must have component if you want to burn belly fat, cellulite or gain more definition you don’t need more than 30-60 mins of it at the right intensity. Anything more you can begin to start burring muscle, which is why without the right balance you could be defeating all your hard work.

At the end of the day you will never “undo” poor eating habits with cardio. If you take in more calories than you burn, you’ll gain weight regardless of how much cardio you do. Too much cardio leads to muscle loss, which slows down your metabolism. If you don’t change up your workouts, steady state daily cardio adds next to nothing towards weight loss, however it will help reduce muscle soreness and speed up recovery. Working with a fitness program and or a personal trainer helps you determine exactly what your body needs in order to get the maximum results. Meal plans are essential and knowing what to do is as important as know what could be slowing your process down. Jade Gold For more health news, visit www. Loretta Devine Sparking Laughs and Conversations in New Show

Goode, Managing Editor

Southern drawl with a hint of sweet tang, award winning actress Loretta Devine’s voice is her signature. Its unmistakable pitch and tone can calm and comfort any toddler who is a fan of the caring hippo Nurse Hallie from the Doc McStuffins cartoon. The distinct nature of it evokes joy and laughter to the older crowd that has followed her body of work over the years and knows the drama and the funny that the actress can bring to any role. Devine with her unforgettable voice has brought characters to life that one can’t help but love. And she is back again on the small screen making you laugh and think in the new comedy on NBC The Carmichael Show. Based off the real life of comedian Jerrod Carmichael, the show that airs on NBC on Wednesday nights at 9/8c sparks the conversation for families as it covers current events and somewhat controversial taboo topics in a funny way. “They will have lots to talk about,” said Devine about people when they watch this show. “We are talking about things that are important to people currently.” Devine shared that some topics covered on the show are that of whether not people should have the right to carry guns, whether health food is really healthy for Black people, and drug testing.

Loretta Devine

The show is centered around Jerrod Carmichael and his relationship with his live-in girlfriend, played by Amber Stevens West, who are just a couple trying to navigate through love and life but can’t because of Jerrod’s parents. Devine plays the role of Cynthia Carmicheal, Jerrod’s super religious, loud, proud mother who is quick to tell Jerrod and everyone the ways of Jesus and is against the cohabitation of the couple without a ring. She is married to Joe Carmichael, played by David Alan Grier, who really needs a filter since he says whatever he wants whether it offends others or not. Rounding out the cast of characters is

Jerrod’s comical brother Bobby, played by Lil Rel Howery. The Carmicheal Show is just one of many projects Devine has her hands into. Later on this year fans of Being Mary Jane can see Devine on three episodes as the character Cece. She also has roles in three movies being released this season including Chapter & Verse, Norm of the North, and Caged No More. Last but not least she voices an old lady character on the video game King’s Quest. Devine stays so busy working I had to ask how does she relax. Believe it or not, Devine relaxes by diving into other artistic crafts. She is an avid painter and jewel maker. Although she has no desire to sell her pieces, she is often told by others that she should really give it some serious thought. “ T h a t ’s t o o much work,” she said. Thinking about her hometown of Houston brings about a calming smile for Devine as Show Cast well. “Some of my best

memories in life are rooted in Houston,” she said. The Acres Homes lady comes to Houston every Christmas as many members of her family still reside in the city. She joked that one can always find a lots of grits in Houston and that the city has some of the most warm and loving people. That warmth and love has followed Devine all the way to her home in LA and shows in every character she plays. Be sure to catch her in her new role as Cynthia Carmichael on The Carmichael Show every Wednesday on NBC at 9/8c. For more information, visit www.nbc.com/the-carmichael-show.

Clark Kent Gets Her Heart; Superman Gets the Headlines

’m not a comic book guy but I do love movies. I’m a big fan of Christian Bale as Batman and Christopher Reeves as Superman but what I notice about every superhero movie, including Superman is that Superman gets the headlines but he’s just unreliable. He saves the world from destruction and saves women from the bad guys but misses the anniversary, misses the date night, forgets to pay the cell phone bill. Superman gets the Instagram likes when he posts a picture of date night. Superman gets the pretty girl at the gym to go on a date with him when she’s made her mind up to give no man the time of day. Superman is just really cool but Superman always disappoints right? This is the thing about women, they love flowers, candy and Victoria’s Secret for no reason but more than that they need for us to be the man we were when we first met them. In life I’ve learned that it’s pretty cool being 80% Clark Kent and 20% Superman. Relationships boil down to one thing, being there when the person you love needs you. See, Superman can’t always be there because for Superman it’s not about one person; it’s about the world. Guys that make

it about the world tend to always lose the one person that matters to them the most. Clark Kent doesn’t make it about the world but instead makes that one person the center of his world. Therefore, he never looses her because she knows he’ll always be there. We a l l e n j o y w a t c h i n g Superman, we enjoy talking about him and fantasizing that we can be him one day but it’s only a fantasy, it’s only a movie, a comic book. Supermen don’t exist in real life because real life isn’t about being bigger than life. Real life is about living life everyday and putting more smiles on her face than frowns. Clark Kent argues and has bad days at work and needs a hug sometimes. Superman never argues, never cries, never fails because for him he’ll always love the cheers of the crowd more than the applause of the one that matters when he doesn’t have those super powers. or more than a decade, non-profit organization Workshop Houston has provided a hands-on creative a f t e r- s c h o o l p r o g r a m a t no cost to the community. With unique workshops that center on academics, fashion, metal fabrication and music production, the program continues to expand creativity and thought leadership throughout Houston’s Third Ward area and beyond. T h e n o n - p r o f i t ’s mission is to provide youth with creative, technical and educational resources. In addition, the program’s vision is to lay the groundwork for a just society by creating a community that provides youth with support, expanded opportunities and alternative definitions of success. The learning environment at Workshop Houston is transformative for its students - many of whom have had negative experiences in traditional educational venues - helping them find their own path towards educational attainment, expanded opportunities in their lives, and a definition of success that is based in values of lifelong learning, community engagement, social justice and self empowerment. The after school and summer programs use the shops’ resources to bring education out of the

classroom and into all aspects of students’ lives in a tangible and exciting way, as well as fostering a positive peer and mentor community that helps youth define and reach their goals in school and beyond. The popular “Beat Shop” workshop has become a program favorite with students learning the basics of production, engineering and even given the opportunity to write and record their own songs. Recently a group of students were treated to an instudio session with former Cash Money super producer Mannie Fresh, who took the time to give a few pointers as well as offer a bit of advice explaining, “Don’t be afraid to go left when everyone goes right.” Following this amazing music experience, Workshop Houston has recently announced its “Small Hands Big Dreams” concert at Warehouse Live. The event, which will serve as a fundraising opportunity for Workshop Houston, will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 3pm to 8pm. Tickets are $35/each and can be purchased online at www.warehouselive. com. For more information about Workshop Houston, please visit www.workshouston. org.

CULINARY

A Crown Affair Fit for a King

he Honey Moon Café in downtown Houston held a private tasting of Crown Royal’s Northern Select Rye and Hand Select Barrel. The guided tasting was lead by Houston’s Master of Whisky Mayra Isais. Crown Royal is a Canadian brand, in fact, according to their website the making of the whiskies is overseen by a small group of workers on the Western Coast of Lake Winnipeg in a small village called Gimli. Although the exact methods of making the whisky are secret, these workers adhere to the same standards and processes that have been performed for many generations. For all who are familiar with Crown Royal, know that it is recognized for its signature smoothness. In order to maintain this consistency, the whisky is blended with all natural ingredients including the water, which is “naturally filtered through the limestone beneath Lake Winnipeg.” Our tasting also included the Regal Apple®, which happened to be my favorited of the three blends. The aroma of this flavor was outstanding, and the finish was as smooth as the combined scents of apples, wood, oats and a hint of honey. On the palate, “opening up with a slightly tart, crisp, apple flavor balanced with signature Crown Royal® blended whisky composed of notes of caramel

& light spice.” The Northern Rye and the Hand Select Barrel blends were quite robust in aroma and flavors, but combined well and added a very smooth finish to the mixed cocktails that were offered. The cocktails and recipes are courtesy of Julie Lozano of The Honeymoon Café and Bar. My favorite cocktail was called “Coal Miner’s Daughter”;
