tree cannot withstand the storms if its roots are weak. A building will not stand without a strong foundation. An economy will not prosper if the people do not share in its rewards. All the celebrations of Labor Day weekend can’t cover up the reality that this economy is not working for working people. Last week, the National Employment Law Project released a report tracing the decline of hourly wages across various occupations during the so-called “recovery” from the Great Recession. Unemployment has been coming down, but wages at every income level except the very rich have not been keeping up with prices. And even as wages decline across the board,

ith about 50 days left to the November 3rd fall elections, heat came to light Tuesday night with former Houston City Attorney Ben Hall and businessman Marty McVey, both candidates in the top of rungs for Houston mayor faced each other at a North Kempwood Civic Club northwest Houston forum in a fierce battle on Mayor Annise Parker’s HERO (Houston Equal Rights Ordinance) that increasingly is the top issue for voters to consider on their ballot. McVey, with an MBA from American University, said he is against discrimination and he held up large poster boards highlighting how the ordinance if passed will give issue to those that feel they’ve been discriminated “in city employment and city services, city contracts, public accommodations, private employment, and housing based on an individual’s sex, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, familial status, marital status, military status, religion, disability, sexual orientation, genetic information, gender identity, or pregnancy.” He said he grew up in the south where he had to attend Klan rallies where his father was in law enforcement and later a judge and he wants HERO passed because Houston is bigger than

Who Speaks for Working People? inequality increases. The lowest-wage workers are taking the biggest hit; the higher-waged workers aren’t sinking as fast. The workers who have fared the worst are often those who serve others. These are the restaurant cooks who rise when it is still dark to open kitchens to serve us breakfast, the janitors who work after the sun goes down to clean up after those in offices, the caregivers who tend to the young, the old, the vulnerable. These workers take the early bus. They nod off in the late night subway. They serve us our food; they clean our tables; they care for our mothers and fathers in the dusk of life. Yet even as the economy grows, they are sinking. Hourly wages for janitors dropped over 6 percent from 2009 to 2014, for cooks and restaurant workers by nearly 9 percent, by day care workers by nearly 7 percent. Who benefits from growing profits and productivity? CEOs are cleaning up. CEOs of the Fortune 500 companies have been spending nearly all of their profits on stock buybacks and dividends. This hikes their pay, much of
which is in stock options, often at the expense of the company’s future. The deck has been stacked to favor only the very few. For the young and people of color, the reality is particularly grim. Those smart and disciplined enough to get to college end up crushed by the loans they must take out to pay for that education. Those who graduate only from high school find good jobs scarce. For a generation of young people of color, joblessness is shattering hope. We must demand our leaders address this. We can’t settle for Republican candidates competing over who will build the highest wall or make the boldest false promise to kick millions out of our country. We can’t accede to Democratic functionaries who curb debates to win political favor. We can’t respect a press corps agog over meaningless polls and petty dust-ups. It is long past time to demand real answers. Who has a jobs program that will put people to work, particularly young people at the start of their adult lives? What targeted programs will connect those in our inner cities with the jobs they need
What measures are needed to insure that workers share in the profits they help to generate? What combination of bonds and revenues will enable us to rebuild a country that suffers as the sinews of its economy -- from bridges to sewers to subways -- weaken with age? In each party, candidates should be required to address this central concern. Independent debates should drill down on these questions. Journalists should demand real answers and report on the differences between the contenders. America is in the midst of the second straight so-called recovery that doesn’t reach most Americans. Wages have stagnated for the whole of this century. As we leave the dog days of August, it is time to get serious about where we are going. You can write to the Rev. hate. “I want local recourse for those that feel discrimination to go to the city’s inspector general to file law suits, especially working people, who may not be able to afford to file federal law suits. I want our city to be forward thinking in this twenty-first century to make everyone welcome and I want to ensure events like the Super Bowl and the Final Four continue to come here which its reported they may not

without this ordinance,” said McVey who despite no name id or prior public office has been included in all the 30 some mayoral candidate debates across Houston. His biggest push was against the anti-HERO anthem that the issue is about bathrooms. McVey said the ordinance does not use the word bathroom and that for decades the city charter has clearly made it against the law to enter a bathroom or anywhere for

the intent to hurt anyone. Hall, with Harvard Law School and Duke University divinity doctorate degrees, rose quick to his feet. He said he has read the 36-page ordinance. He said it is bad legislation that would not pass in any of the dozens of southern cities he listed that do have non discrimination ordinances. “Marty is not a lawyer and is wrong. I’ll be the mayor for all Houston including transgender folks this purports to protect. The ordinance covers public facilities and restrooms are public facilities. The ordinance makes it illegal for a restaurant owner to see that a man is removed from loitering or threatening by his presence with women and children in women’s restrooms. As a husband and father, as a businessman, a pastor and a lawyer I am and I will continue to fight this because to me this is unacceptable,” Hall said at the event that required police protection because of a national transgender activist named Nikki Araguz that continued to interrupt him. n 2012, voters approved a budget over a billion for Houston Independent School District to rebuild several schools in the district. However, three years later and some schools are getting notified that they won’t be rebuilt. HISD claims rising inflation and construction costs caused the budget to not stretch as far as they planned and that they are now $211 million short for promised projects. 9/11: In Remembrance of Houstonian Daniel Martin Caballero
Howard, Special to Style
riday, September 11, 2015 will mark the fourteenth anniversary of that fateful day on which the United States of America was hit with one of the most physically and emotionally devastating terrorist attacks in the country’s history. In many ways, it is difficult to imagine that “9/11” – as it has come to be known – happened so long ago. And yet for many, the wound that it left behind is still very much open and fresh. It’s become common practice to ask “Where were you when the towers were hit?” and “Did you have any family in New York or D.C. (the Pentagon is a lesser referenced second target of the 9/11 attacks)?” when this time of year rolls around. To wear the American flag, the red and white stripes and the stars shining out against a blue background, more proudly than you might even on the 4th of July. It’s become common practice to feel somber in one moment of reflection and then to feel a surge of pride in the next

because of the U.S.’s resilience and perseverance in spite of tragedy. Up until that day in 2001, the United States had proudly – perhaps even, to a degree, arrogantly – touted itself as the best in the world. The country’s economy was booming. It was THE place to come for those in search of new opportunities and a better life. The country’s athletes were just as dominant, dispatching competition from any part of the world whether it was in basketball, gymnastics, or even at the Olympics. Then the planes hit. And in a matter of minutes, the most impregnable nation in the world was put in an extremely vulnerable place. America, a safe haven for so many people, didn’t feel so safe anymore. Lives were lost, monuments and undeniably American landmarks were decimated, and the country’s reputation as the self-anointed greatest nation on earth was under fire. Bravery. Courage. These became common phrases that would mark the country’s response in the days and years to follow. And if there is any one good thing about tragedy, it’s that unfortunate circumstances often bring people together. “9/11” became a unifier – the phrase “united we stand” took on a newer, much more close to home meaning following the terrorist
8
attacks because the country across the board bonded together. Neighbors who didn’t talk to each other at all suddenly engaged with one another. Common strangers rallied to raise money and coordinate efforts to help people they didn’t even know, in moving forward after the attacks. A war on terror was launched. The Department of Homeland Security was founded. U.S. troops were sent into Iraq and Afghanistan and the Patriot Act was adopted. Fourteen years later, the United States of America has demonstrated its resilience. The “War on Terror” launched by President Bush has tapered off, as a grand majority of the U.S. troops sent to Iraq, Afghanistan, and their surrounding areas back then, have come back stateside. It has been easier for some to move on than others. “Immediately following the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, our nation came together,” remarks Andrea Valadez Caballero, a native Houstonian who lost family to the 9/11 attacks. “This doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.” Caballero admits that she, too, had no reason to worry about her safety feeling threatened prior to 9/11. “I didn’t have any safety concerns prior to 9/11,” Caballero reflects, “and Daniel Martin Caballero’s neices with President Obama now, fourteen years later, thanks to the creation of Homeland Security and his education at the next level. several intelligence agencies of foreign allies [working “I’ve met several people in D.C. and in our hometown together] to prevent terrorist attacks, I can say I feel that knew Danny, and I can honestly say I haven’t met safer.” a soul who wasn’t touched in one way or another by But fourteen years doesn’t erase things or my baby brother. Caballero’s younger brother, Daniel Caballero remarks that she often spends 9/11 Martin Caballero, was one of the many victims of the in the years since amongst family members, keeping 9/11 attacks. Caballero, a former United States Navy in mind and reflection the lives of all those lost, but Petty Officer, entered the Navy straight out of high especially that of her brother. school, dedicated to serving his country and continuing Sacrifice. This is the other sometimes forgotten word that took on a new meaning after the United States was struck by terrorism. Some literally sacrificed their lives for what they believed in – for ideals that meant something to their country and also meant something to themselves as individuals. Some sacrificed their rights, for the betterment of the greater good and to ensure that the United States was a safer place. But almost everyone in the country sacrificed their personal pride and prejudices, and division took a backseat to rising above as Americans. It’s a unified position that was inspiring at its time, and that, now, seems only to happen just once a year. In spite of calls to “Never Forget” the attacks and the tragedy, the unity of the country itself seems very much forgotten. “It shouldn’t take an anniversary of the tragedy,” Caballero says, “to restore the spirit of unity felt in the weeks after the attack. It would be wonderful for us [as citizens] to come together as once before – sadly, I believe this would only happen if we have to endure another 9/11.” Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

COMMENTARY by Dr. Lovell A. Jones, Feature Writer
A
s we enter into the second half of the first decade of the twenty-first century, I am beginning to wonder if we are entering into the end of the Second Reconstruction Era. Everything seems to be pointing in that direction. Congress is polarized, Democrats versus Republicans, the Republican Establishment versus the Tea Party, Conservatives versus Liberal, with no middle ground. And who is caught in the middle of this, minorities and the

poor, but especially African Americans. Why do I point out African Americans? Well, there are several factors. We are the only group in this country that were enslaved for over 400 years, to then face Jim Crow law for another one hundred years. But just as important, we are the only race defined legally as a race by the US Supreme Court. This occurred in 1986 when the court let stand a decision by the Louisiana
Supreme Court in it ruling that a female who challenged her racial classification on her birth certificate, indicating that she was colored or Negro. As she stated, she was born white, she was raised white and she went to white schools. However, her racial classification was based on the midwife knowing she had colored blood in her linage. You she her great-great-great-great grandmother was an African slave. Some of you have heard of the 1/32 rule, well she was way about that, 3/32. On May 18,1983 the law was upheld by a Louisiana state judge. In 1986, three years after the Louisiana law was repealed because of the negative publicity that the Phipps case attracted, both the Louisiana Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court refused to review or reverse this lower court ruling. Therefore, Mrs. Phillips, the wife of a very prominent white businessman with white children she gave birth to, remained a Black women for the rest of her life. Why does the definition of RACE continue to matter? For two important reasons, as Harold Freeman once stated, RACE is “perhaps the sin-
gle most defining issue in the history of American society” and the fact that we have never has an open and honest discussion on the impact on race, especially where African Americans are concern, on the well being of this nation. I believe that the closes we ever came to addressing this issue legally, was the most comprehensive Civil Right Act passed in 1875. It stated that: “Whereas it is essential to just government we recognize the equality of all men before the law, and hold that it is the duty of government in its dealings with the people to mete out equal and exact justice to all, of whatever nativity, race, color, or persuasion, religious or political; and it being the appropriate object of legislation to enact great fundamental principles into law: Therefore,Be it enacted, That all persons within the jurisdiction of the United States shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the accommodations, advantages, facilities, and privileges of inns, public conveyances on land or water, theaters, and other places of public amusement; subject only to the conditions and limitations established by law, and applicable alike to citizens of every race and color, regardless of any previous condition of servitude. Did you pick up a bug of some kind or – as you’ll learn in the new book “Black Man in a White Coat” by Damon Tweedy, M.D. – does the color of your skin have something to do with it? Damon Tweedy knew he was a rarity. In 1996, the year he entered medical school at Duke University, just seven percent of all medical students in the U.S. were black. That minority-within-a-minority, he says, led to unintended racism in the classroom. Working at the hospital, he also saw racism’s effects: many of Tweedy’s patients were black, and the state of their health opened his eyes. He’d grown up in a solidly middle-class neighborhood with two parents who demanded education. Those were things that most of Tweedy’s black patients never had, and that mattered. As he worked his way from student to intern to resident, Tweedy gained experience and tried several branches of medicine before deciding on psychiatry as a specialty. But long
before that, he worked in Labor & Delivery and learned that “more than 70 percent of black children are born to unmarried women,” a rate that’s more than twice that of white babies. He saw the affects of poverty while volunteering at a “safety-net clinic” in rural North Carolina. There, he found that “poor blacks were four times as likely as the general population to receive care” at such facilities. Hypertension is “50 percent more common in black people than in whites…” Homicide is the leading cause of death for black male teens, which can lead to survivor guilt. AIDS, once a death sentence, is treatable today – although “black people… are more than eight times as likely as whites to be diagnosed with HIV.” Overall, “Being black can be bad for your health” but there are windows of good news… When you first glimpse “Black Man in a White Coat,” you may wonder if it’s about health or if it’s a memoir. It’s both, actually, but that scarcely matters when a book is this good. With a calm voice that belies the urgency he so apparently feels about the subject, author Damon Tweedy, M.D. explains why African Americans need to pay better attention to their health and the care they get. How the system

t’s easy to be the man that steps up when he’s supposed to step up. When it’s her birthday, you’re on point. When it’s your anniversary, there’s not a better date planner in the world. She’s excited about a promotion; you’ll have the champagne and flowers ready as soon as she walks through the door. That’s only like 10% of a relationship though, 10% of the dating process. What about the other days, the other nights? Calling a woman or texting a woman and asking her, “WYD” or “It’s supposed to rain tonight so what do you want to eat?” You might see it as sensible or something that just makes sense after a long day but sometimes you have to not only take control but also crave control. If you’re a man reading this I want you to ask yourself one question, “When Demez White is the last time I called a woman and told her, ‘I’m picking you up at 8, of her saying she has plans, don’t be wear that black dress I saw you in afraid of “I’m tired.” Be afraid of when you went to your best friend’s being ordinary. party back in May.” Don’t be afraid I don’t care if your woman 10

fails black patients is of particular interest to him (he, in fact, relates an anecdote of his own as illustration), and he offers opinions on the Affordable Care Act. In between this obviously useful info, Tweedy also shares with readers his long and personal path to becoming a doctor and how he grew with each step. This is one of those books you wish wouldn’t have to end. It’s interesting, gently humorous, and – more importantly – it may save lives. And if those aren’t good enough reasons to want “Black Man in a White Coat,” then read it just for the health of it. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.
is in charge of the largest department in her company. I don’t care if she makes twice what you make and had to let your little brother “borrow” some money for a textbook. That doesn’t take away from that fact that just because she has to be superwoman out there doesn’t mean she wants to be that at home or in her relationship. So many men complain about dating when the truth is all you’re doing is setting a standard that lets her know she can stop entertaining those other guys. One way to do that is by simply being tastefully aggressive.

What’s tasteful aggression? It’s being the man that knows what he wants and is an adult about expressing it and actively pursuing her. Not just asking a woman out on a date or out for drinks but telling her where, what time and what you like to see her in. Not the cheesy lingerie or panty talk but actual clothes. Colors, styles, how you like her hair. If you’re a genuine guy she won’t take it as you trying to control her or tell her how to dress. She’ll take it as you being a man that pays attention. In 2015 everyone takes pride in being laid back, in being cool. You want to know what I take pride in? Being serious about the people that matter to me and while I’m being serious I’ll take time to laugh, smile, flirt but she won’t have hesitations about my intentions. Even if your ultimate goal isn’t marriage, it’s still cool to set a standard and be the man that not every other man is. For more stories by Demez, visit www.demezw.com.

hen the bell rings on the first day of school, so do gaps in achievement. Many will begin school for the first time believing they are quite capable of achieving respectable outcomes, however, as the year progresses so will reality, so will dysfunctional beliefs and so will gaps in achievement. The “many” I’m referring to are teachers and teacher leaders. Many will start the year with high hopes, great expectations and a lot of positive energy and will begin
Back-to-School and Back-to-Gaps: Learning Gaps Are the Direct Result of Teaching Gaps the work without the necessary tools to garner success. They will be experts in instructional theory and pedagogy, but if that expertise does not deliver results it’s meaningless. Gaps in achievement happen when there are gaps in teaching. Teaching gaps produce learning gaps. I know what you’re saying, “What about the parents? They have a part in this too!” Yes, they have supplied humans for the schools to service. However, they do not provide the teaching service -schools do. The state does not measure parent accountability; it measures school accountability and how we service humans through our systems. If we are unsuccessful, it is not because something is wrong with the biology of being human, but something is wrong with the anatomy of the service system of schools. It’s a hard pill to swallow, I know; but take your medicine anyway – get better. Wishing for success is a whole lot easier than achieving success. Quietly giving into despair requires little effort, holding on to hope and
persevering regardless of obstacles, well that doesn’t come so easy. This is especially true in schools that are culturally unresponsive yet believe they are instructionally fit. It’s like boasting about going to the gym everyday and embracing a lifestyle of a junk food diet. Whatever you accomplish in the gym, you kill all progress with your lifestyle diet. Regardless of how instructionally gifted you are, in a culturally unresponsive system you kill all progress and the potential of those teaching gifts. The National Center for Education Statistics, Condition of Education 2015 did an Early Childhood Longitudinal study of teachers of kindergarten students. Those teachers reported on how students rate in seven approaches to learning behaviors: paying attention, persisting in completing tasks, showing eagerness to learn new things, working independently, adapting easily to changes in routine, keeping belongings organized, and following classroom rules. On a scale of 1-4, with 4 being the highest rating, the average
score of all kindergartners was 3.0. There were very small gaps among all measurable subsets (a range of 2.7-3.1). This is regardless of the parents’ highest level of educational achievement, socioeconomic status or the number of adults in the household. Now watch how culturally unresponsive systems and gaps work. Regardless of race, income, parents’ educational attainment and number of parents in the household, the playing field is almost level in the beginning of the kindergarten school year in how the teacher reports the student’s learning behaviors. When teaching is applied and achievement is assessed, everything changes and gaps emerge. R e a c h D r. M c L e o d a t DrKMcLeod@gmail.com and follow her on Twitter @mcleodkr. Becoming a Conscious Eater

isten, we’ve all been there. We’ve overindulged and lived to regret it. One too many glasses of wine and you feel like absolute garbage the next day. A sliver of chocolate cake that turns into 3 slices and everyone’s favorite cheat meal turns into a long “I just don’t care month!” I feel you. And I also know how frustrating it can be to feel like you aren’t in control of your cravings or how much you indulge. I know what it feels like to finally get on track with your nutrition, and then feel like a failure when it all goes to pieces in the blink of an eye. put an end to the yo-yo cycle of binge, berate, restrict, and repeat. Think about what we are up against here in Texas? Everything is BIGGER, BETTER, more flavor and who wants to hear the words, diet, restricted, low calorie, no carbs or fat/ sugar free? We want to sip and taste and never feel deprived because life is about living to the fullest and what better way to self indulge than to eat things that make us feel good! We want to indulge without the requisite guilt that comes along with it. After all, if food is meant to be pleasurable, why should we feel so bad about it? As a trainer and health coach I often find myself in discussions with clients that center around their thinking. Many things they are unable to stick with any given program or overcoming poor eating habits because they just don’t have the right motivation or discipline. While that is partial true, the bigger question becomes what will cause us to change is our MINDSET. Mindset can seem like a vague concept or intangible term but it’s actually pretty simple: Your mindset is your Truth. It’s your perspective, the way you view your environment, and how you choose to perceive your world and your boundaries. Your mindset guides

how you think about food and fitness, and your mindset ultimately determines lasting success. While there are some clear cut industry foods that certainly cause overeating and insurmountable cravings the list isn’t that long considering the many choices we have on a daily basis? Here’s just a few. •Pizza •Chips •Ice Cream •Soda •Packaged snacks and cookies Yes, there is an actual scientific reason you just can’t eat one and the food industry is banking on your success for not caring why. On the other hand, if what you need are some simple strategies to help you take control of possible over eating, I can certainly help make it simple but it requires you to be conscious about your food and your food choices. Are you ready? •Each time you ask yourself, do I need this food to support my well-being or do I just want it? •Will I feel guilty after I eat it and will it help me meet my

health and fitness goals? •If I eat this food, will it some how make my experience in someway better and if I don’t eat it what will I benefit? While this may seem like a silly task each and every time you eat, there is a method to the madness and it involves what I call “Conscious Eating” and it works very well with my clients taking ownership and responsibility in how they see, eat and process food behaviors. You are in control of everything you choose to place in your body and the first step to discovery is uncovering your truth and your balance. Best Summer Movies of 2015
By Rascal F Kennedy, Special to Style
W
hen Labor Day came to a close Monday, so did the summer movie season. A summer that saw Universal Studios rake in a massive haul and not only take home top movie honors box office wise with Jurassic World, they also have already set the all-time record in terms of single-year gross by a studio. They’ve still got three months to pad that lead, by the way. The summer movie season of 2015 gave us our fair share of heroes, small and large. It gave us a story about N.W.A that turned them into the most highly acclaimed music biopic ever. It also showed us that not everything with a Marvel attachment to it (yes, Fantastic Four) ends in box office gold. With the summer movie season done, it’s time to reflect and look back at the five best films of the summer. Honorable Mentions: 10. Pixels 09. Southpaw 08. Terminator: Genysis 07. Inside Out 06. Dope
5. Jurassic World Worldwide Box-Office Earnings: $1.6 billion Jurassic World was pure nostalgia for anybody born before 1995. Any person who has seen the original trilogy definitely was in a theater somewhere in the country that weekend. I mean, Jurrasic World ran the box office for about a month. My mom never goes to the movies; she was live at 5 for Jurrasic World. The reboot confirmed that Chris Pratt is not only a leading man in Hollywood; he’s in complete control of two franchises and can laugh his way to the bank to boot. Put Pratt in a world where you’ve got a Mosasoraus, a genetically modified Velociratpor/T-Rex combo in the Indominous Rex, the return of the king T-Rex and three lovable Velociraptors and you were asking for money to be printed. The thrills were kept at a high, fans bought in to the fear of IR and how the lingering theory of dinosaurs being used as weapons for warfare was a nice touch. Why it’s #5? A far too predictable story. Overall this film was amazing though. Colin Trevorrow and the producers at Universal could have a classic on their hands. It definitely fit well in the series, and I’m sure the sequel will be no different.
4. Mad Max: Fury Road Worldwide Box-Office Earnings: $374 million Mad Max was amazing, a visual masterpiece with so many side characters you could root for beyond Max, Nux and Furiosa. I was happy we got a continuation instead of a reboot. Lately, these reboots have been make or break (oh hi, Fantastic Four). I loved the original trilogy, but I’m a millennial. Our generation is kind of lazy and they don’t understand Max as much as the generations before ours did. In my opinion, Max was an amazing adventure that took you to depths of your mind that you have never imagined. The psychological mind battering camera angles and insane imagery all played apart in this. George Miller being the genius that he is simply gave us what we’ve been missing, a bit of insanity with subtle worldly influences to deliver the goods. You’ve got Immortan Joe, Stalin of the desolate land, Hitler of Armageddon and a perfect foil to the nobility and moral fight Theron and Max laid out. Mad Max had ideals of feminism, communism, marxism, monarchism and other theorems stretched throughout it, making it arguably the smartest wild ride you had this summer.. The Feminism standpoint stood out to me among others. No, it wasn’t full on 100% Feminism, but it used bits and pieces. You’d argue this would be #1 at least, right? Well … about that …
summer. Some would even dare argue it was the best ride they had in the movies this summer. Let us begin with the bad, which there isn’t much. I like my veggies before my dessert. There just simply wasn’t much complexity to the story with Avengers: Age of Ultron. I know; it was an action film packed w/ superheroes. I just feel Ultron was created too fast, and he became evil too fast. The plot doesn’t develop at a pace where you can indulge everything. That being said, the movie was amazing. Hulk versus Hulkbuster had to be the fight of the year. We got to finally see Vision, some Ulysses Klaw, our first taste of Black Panther, bits and pieces of “Hell” which is going to be a big part of Thor: Ragnorok. What comic book movies or studios anyway have learned is that strong actors are needed in order to bring life to characters. James Spader as Ultron conveys such a love/hate/ mesmerizing presence. The best kind of evil is the evil that can bend your will into rooting for it (see Pablo Escobar in Narcos). Joss Whedon definitely knew what he was doing casting Spader. I feel like AOU was better than the original Avengers because of Spader and Scarlett Witch. Witch definitely opened a gateway for us to continue or journey to the Infinite Stones. You know what really made this film amazing? The 10 seconds or so we finally get Josh Brolin off of that damn chair! “Fine, I’ll do it myself.” might just be the greatest movie line of 2015. Of course next to, “Chewie, we’re home.” that is. The saga continues with the Marvel universe.
1. Ant-Man Worldwide Box-Office Earnings: $384 million
2. Straight Outta Compton Worldwide Box-Office Earnings: $168 million
3. Avengers: Age Of Ultron Worldwide Box-Office Earnings: $1.4 billion Most would rate Avengers as maybe the fifth best movie of the
and in particular black and brown Angelos treatment by the police is what grabbed my attention. Of course, I know about N.W.A and the history of Compton. California is a huge influence to me personally from my music background. The scenes that popped: Cube getting harassed and slammed on a cop car in front of his mother, the final confrontation that led to “F**k The Police”, the Rodney King verdict and subsequent Los Angeles Riots. That’s what made this film psychologically resonate so well with its audience. Even if it was meant to entertain, Straight Outta Compton touched plenty of emotions and gave people a visual representation of something that felt so common and nowhere near distant. Straight Outta Compton owned August and it currently owns the silver medal in terms of our summer rankings. But, number one?
Even with all of the inaccuracies, those who know the greater sins of N.W.A denouncing it, and some sects of the public thinking there were going to be shootouts at theaters that showed it, Straight Outta Compton was the second best film of the summer, if not the entire year. The movie wasn’t 100% accurate, but most biopics take liberty with certain issues or topics. There was so much more to this film though. The portrayal of the police in this film, and the amount of people that can relate to this film was what F. Gary Gray and company honed in on and succeeded. This is what made this film #2 to me. The backstory of N.W.A’s
Seven years. 12 films. Unparalleled dominance. Even the supposed “set up” movies like Ant-Man turned out to be standout films on their one. For a movie that felt more like a heist movie than a simple superhero flick, Ant-Man answered all the critics who thought it was going to be Marvel’s first genuine “flop” since The Incredible Hulk back in 2009. What the film accomplished maybe far better than any other Marvel film to date is humanizing its main characters. Hank Pym wants to change the world and fears going too far because he lost his wife that way. Scott Lang merely wants to be a hero for his daughter. Even if Corey Stoll happened to play a paint-by-numbers villain in Yellowjacket, he still got to have a few inhumane moments to zero-in on his nastiness. Couple that with great side characters in Michael Peña and T.I. and you’ve got an enjoyable popcorn flick. The bonus is how Ant-Man told two stories, one general linear tale of building a hero and a secondary one where Marvel’s upcoming Civil War lies. The surprise of the summer was the best film of the summer, at least to me. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

Fourteen Years Later-- Remembering 9/11
Ponder, Feature Writer
E
v e n f o u r t e e n y e a r s l a t e r, Americans still remember the devastating aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11. After terrorists hijacked a plane in hopes of carrying out hate-related suicide attacks, many Americans feared
intensely for their lives and their safety. The Islamic extremist group al-Quaeda targeted the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and had intentions of attacking the state capital. The four plane crashes carried out by extremists killed nearly 3,000 people, but what it
could not do was murder the American spirit. In fact, it awakened it. The 9/11 attacks awakened the American spirit so much that it brought a whole nation together, giving us all a sense of pride that let everyone know we were unbreakable and wouldn’t be backed in a corner by the very ones that wanted to dismember our country. Fourteen years ago at 8:45 a.m., the people of New York City watched as a plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. What people thought could have been an accident turned out to be intentional as another plane hit the South Tower with a sharp, deliberate turn into one of the world’s greatest symbols. As a result, the collision caused a major explosion that covered the city in debris, blood, and tears for the fallen, the unknown, and the confusion of what had happened. While our brothers and sisters of New York suffered while being face to face with this nightmare, many of us watched the
news with tears in ours eyes, as we felt helpless seeing our country under attack. The scenes on television were rewind and replayed constantly as people tried to make sense of what was going on and why it was happening to us. Fourteen years later, it is quite amazing to say that not even that could break us. Think about how many families united after that. Think of the many soldiers in the Armed Forces that risked their lives in hopes of making our country a safe place, knowing that they may not return home to their loved ones. Think of the United Flight 93 and the brave passengers that caught word of the recent attacks and refused to allow another to take place. Think of the many people that risked their lives by going in those buildings and saving the trapped and the injured. All of these things remind us in some way that we are invincible. We are feared, so much that some wanted to destroy our very being. Even through our differences and disagreements in terms of how this country is led, we are phenomenal. Even in all of our country’s imperfections, we are still overcoming. We will never forget what took place on that Tuesday of September 11, 2001. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

Marty McVey: Giving Back to the City That Gave to Him
Goode, Managing Editor
aturally when something is good, you want to pass it on. You want to talk about it. You want others to experience it. Houston mayoral candidate Marty McVey feels the same way about our city. The North Carolina native came to Houston seeking opportunity and found it. “I want to ensure every generation after me has the same opportunities I had,” said McVey in a recent interview with Houston Style. He told how good Houston has been to him. “ I owe a debt to this city. I want to give back.” McVey wants to give Houston a new outlook with a new vision. Under his eyes Houston will prosper for the next 60 years not the next six years. Running on a campaign where financial responsibility and management will be hallmark, McVey’s top priorities for Houston on day one of being mayor if elected would be to get Houston’s financial house in order, establish an economic development office, establish a city ID card, develop a plan for the city and rebuild the city’s government from the ground up. A lofty agenda but being a true businessman, he has a plan to execute it. In business, the bottom line is always about the dollar and brining in revenue. Coming from a business mindset, McVey is about revenue and
Marty McVey
bringing more of it to Houston. Revenue is not just dollars and cents but it is also opportunities and services to benefit all Houstonians. In establishing a “real” economic development office, McVey wants to have approximately 25 full time staffers whose sole job is to bring new opportunities and revenue to Houston so we don’t loose the opportunities to other viable cities. His plan is to use city ID cards to help citizens draft a bank account and establish other necessities we sometimes take for granted. ID cards will also help with the public and police officer
relations to eliminate some of the fear. The ID cards are part of the plan to bring more city services to all. McVey wants to modernize the city’s government by restructuring mobility and other services to make them more efficient and not drain our resources. McVey’s vision is broad and takes Houston beyond its borders to look at things in different ways. “I want Houston to be very competitive going forward,” said McVey, who also said Houston could longer depend on just the oil field as a resource. Manufacturing and technology are industries McVey would like to tap as resources. “I am not an ordinary guy so I like non ordinary things,“ said McVey. And that goes for the way he wants to run Houston and his personal life. When taking off the suit and tie and releasing from the business world, McVey can be caught jumping out of an airplane or snorkeling or doing some extreme caving. His taste in music is just as diverse as his interests in sports. His radio is programmed with country, Latin and even a little hip-hop. “I like music that tells a story. I listen to music based on mood,” McVey laughed. His love
for story telling connects with movies as well. Documentaries, especially of influential business people, inspire him. One of his favorites is a series on ‘The Men Who Built America.’ He said the series taught him there would always be challenges and you have to meet them head on and deal with them and not run from them. McVey is an accomplished businessman, public servant, and philanthropist with more than 15 years of international development, new business development, and social justice expertise. He is the President and CEO of McVey & Associates LLC, a Houston based private equity firm focused on healthcare, real estate, and energy investments. The Georgetown University, Esade University, and American University alum is often called as a guest lecturer at many institutions to discuss business affairs. He actively supports and contributes to a variety of charities including but not limited to the Bush-Clinton Ike Coastal Recovery Fund, South Asian Chamber of Commerce, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and Planned Parenthood. Banking on the Best Fried Fish in the Galaxy By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer

ost native Houstonians probably can name a dozen “fish places” that have come and gone in our city; they pack a punch with a large crowd following for a while
and then all of sudden they’re out of business. Almost anyone who enjoys fried seafood has their preference on the types of fish, degree of spice, to the
crunchiness of the batter. At Fish Tales, which boasts “Home of The Best Fried Fish in The Galaxy,” owner Carlos Peña is working

feverishly serving up crowd pleasing plates of fried or grilled fish, shrimp, fries, wings, and his special house fried rice. But that’s not all, through trial and error; he has created one of the most diverse menus that I have seen in an establishment, which is relatively small by comparison to a typical chain restaurant. For example, one could enjoy chicken wings, fish, soup, shrimp or a Columbian inspired platter of beef, rice, Texas Sausage, plantains and avocado. This may seem strange to some, but not if you know Carlos, he has a background in Industrial Engineering, a Masters degree in Economics, and spent 25 years in Corporate America as a Compliance Manager. In other words, he knows how to achieve efficiency in any task that is set before him. Additionally, he speaks five languages fluently, is a native of Bogata Columbia and has been working since the age of 10. Now back to the food, on my last visit I tried the fried fish and wing combo with fries; included with each order are sides of some special tartar sauce that is labeled “award winning and addictive”. The fish was lightly battered which made it crunchy on the
outside while the inside was moist and well seasoned. The spices did not over power the taste of the fish. In my opinion, the fish did not need any help; however, my guests and I dipped our fish, fries and wings into those cups of creamy sauce, which we ran out of very quickly. We also tried a sample of the hush puppies and the fried rice, the hush puppies can be a meal by themselves, they were light, soft as if they were taken out of an oven instead of a fryer, and we dipped in the tartar sauce, which enhanced the flavor immensely. The rice was cooked perfectly, after being sautéed with sausage and vegetables it came out fluffy with an amazing aroma that made it disappear quickly. Fish tales is located at 11611 West Airport in The Meadows, Texas ,which is off Highway 59 South. They are open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. stop by and say hello to “Mr. BFFG”.
