Bluster is Not a Strategy

luster is on the loose. With ISIS, an al-Qaeda offshoot, proclaiming a Caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria, Russia facing off with Ukraine, Libya descending into a civil chaos, the Taliban striking in Afghanistan, pundits and politicians are raising a drum beat of demands for muscular action, condemning President Obama for his caution and supposed passivity. But the bluster is providing more heat than light. Remember, we had a president who shot first and thought later, who roused Americans with the threat of weapons of mass destruction, and dispatched American forces into a war of choice halfway around the world. The result was the Iraq debacle, source of much of the troubles we face today. We were told it would be easy, and that it wouldn’t cost much. We were told

the ground.” We need to face off with the Russians in Ukraine, they suggest, arguing Obama isn’t tough enough, while suggesting nothing beyond what he is already doing. We should be bombing ISIS and organizing a coalition against it, which again the president is already doing. Macho bluster is good for locker rooms; it plays well in TV studios. It is dangerous in foreign policy. We need a president who thinks it through before he acts it out. We want a president who is thoughtful and prudent, not one with an itchy trigger finger. One way to bring more sense to this debate would be to do what other nations would have already done. Let’s hear far less from those who drove us into Iraq. Let’s hear more from those who voted against the Iraq war, who doubted the supposed threat of weapons of mass destruction, who were skeptical about the claims of an easy victory that wouldn’t cost much. It is hard to understand why the networks keep featuring the same crowd that got it so wrong on Iraq at such great cost to American lives and fortune. President Obama should be praised, not censored, for refusing to be rushed into war, for taking time to organize allies and to consider whether our own security is threatened. From Afghanistan across the region to Libya, civil wars, sectarian conflicts, tribal

and regional rivalries are generating complicated, tangled conflicts. No president of either party would put troops back into that cauldron. The armchair warriors should be, but are not chastened by, the calamity that they have helped to create. They may not be able to stop talking tough, but surely neither the president nor the rest of us need listen to them. You can write to the Rev. Congressional District 18 Crowded with Challengers

S Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee represents the heart of Texas’ most historic African American areas and has done so for 20 years since she first filed at the last minute and then shocked the inner-city by beating Craig Washington in a March 1994 Primary. Jackson Lee has won big general election victories every other year since then and crushed former City Council Member Jarvis Johnson and attorney Sean Roberts in a 2010 Democratic Primary. The energetic, ever present congresswoman is being challenged again this year. Three general election opponents all have pledged to prevent her this fall from serving an eleventh term. Vince Duncan turned in to Texas Secretary of State Nandita Berry’s office on June 26th 2,000 signatures on petitions of citizens registered to vote in Texas 18th Congressional District that were independent. In Texas this means they had not voted in either the March 4th Democrat or the Republican Primaries. With the acceptance of 500 of those signatures, Duncan earned a place on the November 4th ballot as an independent candidate for congress for Texas’ 18th District. “I couldn’t start collecting

Page 4

-- by ever macho Senator John McCain -- that setting up a new government wouldn’t be a problem, that there wasn’t really much enmity between Sunni and Shiite. The administration’s hawks -- led by Rumsfeld and Cheney -- didn’t even think it necessary to plan for the aftermath. Shock and awe and then democracy would break out. The result was certainly the worst foreign policy calamity since Vietnam. The war will end up costing an estimated $3 trillion dollars, along with tens of thousands of American soldiers dead and wounded. The invasion helped to destabilize the entire Middle East, unleashing a Sunni-Shiite civil war that continues to this day. Now we hear the same kind of macho posturing from the same people who drove us so recklessly into Iraq. We should have sent arms to supposed “moderates” in Syria, they crow, arms that surely would be in the hands of ISIS by now. We should have bombed Assad in Syria, they bluster, although Assad is, at this point, the strongest opponent of the ISIS terrorists. We should ratchet up the pressure on Iran -- “Everyone wants to go to Baghdad, was a favorite quip in the Bush White House, “real men want to go to Tehran”- but don’t say what that would entail. We should have done more in Libya, they argue, as that country descends into a civil chaos, but no one wants “boots on

my signatures until after the primaries were over in March but I walked streets knocking on doors and told folks that I respected Mrs. Jackson Lee and all the generations before her that opened countless doors for me and others. I’m forever grateful to her for her leadership for a generation but know it’s time for us to hold the doors open for us and ourselves, our children and the generations to come,” said Duncan, a carpenter that has lived all his life in the district on the north side of Houston. “When I went to the Houston Rodeo to collect signatures because we need to send someone new to Congress people signed my petition. I know this will be hard but I buried my veteran father and my dying mother. That was hard. Together we can do this,” he said. “She’s been there so long,” said Duncan. “Our President talked about hope and change. I know we need a change in this district. I’m hopeful.” Duncan is a product of Houston schools attending Pleasantville Elementary, McReynolds Middle and then Wheatley High School before graduating from Lamar University. Sean Seibert was the Republican candidate against Jackson Lee in

September 11- September 17, 2014

2012. This year he is in the race again having recently returned from Afghanistan and retiring as a US Army Colonel. “I seek your support to be your reasonable voice in Congress. I’ll champion causes important to you. I’ll listen to you. I will take your concerns forward. I will fight for causes that best serve you. I appreciate your support to become your representative in Washington,” Seibert said. Seibert continued by stating what he supports. “I’m a fiscal conservative. I believe in debt reduction. My philosophy is pay as you go,” said Seibert, who began his career as a US Army private and spent nearly 30 years in military service. Representing the Green Party is Remington Alessi, a veteran of the Occupy Movement. “I’m a grassroots activist motivated by social and economic justice. I’m not afraid to fight for it. While other politicians broker backroom deals, I works in broad daylight, even when it means going toe-totoe with the police,” said Alessi. “I’ve been arrested and put in jail, shivering, coughing, frightened and worried about missing exams. When I was released from the

Harris County Jail I came out with bronchitis and pleurisy. I felt broken. Somewhere between being beat by guards and sleeping on concrete in the basement of a jail that was originally a cold storage warehouse in one thin layer of clothing and knowing my lovely supporting wife Valerie was at home scared stiff with me unable to comfort her there was something inside me that died but I still have faith though somewhere, somehow, there is still a bit of hope the absurd system of justice that allows HPD to use PVC pipe devices to charge protesters with felonies will do some good in the end,” he said. Early voting begins Monday, October 20 and ends Friday, October 31 for the Tuesday, November 4 election. Make sure you vote for your choice in the upcoming election. t is so appropriate that the Southmore Post Office, located in the heart of the 18th Congressional district, was recently renamed after the late Congressman George Thomas “Mickey” Leland. Congressman Leland represented the 18th district until his death in 1989. It was an honor for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who now represents the 18th congressional district, to make the announcement. Congresswoman Lee said, “The life and legacy of Mickey Leland…continues to inspire students, activists and citizens around this great nation and the world.” For more information, visit stylemagazine. com.

Houston is home to two of the top five most congested roadways – the 610 West Loop and the Southwest Freeway. Houstonians would probably ranked all freeways in the Bayou City as the state’s most congested. See the full list online mobility. tamu.edu/most-congested-texas/.

Lovell’s Food For Thought Perception Versus Reality Part II

came across this blog written by Gina Crosley-Corcaran called “Explaining White privilege to a Broke White People. Well, after hearing a few African Americans who have succeeded say that racism and “white privilege” does exist and did not block their ability to achieve, I thought I would review Peggy McIntosh’s “white privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” and share a few thoughts and questions about “white privilege.” These are paraphrased from what was asked by Gina Crosley-Carcaran in her article. Mr./Ms. African American who has succeed can you turn on your television or open the front page of your local and/or national newspaper and see people of your race widely represented in a power light, and please don’t mention the ‘Bill Cosby Show? Ok, if a traffic cop stops you and pulls you over, what do you think that interaction will be like, especially in a predominantly white neighborhood or an area of town that you are not perceived to belong in? Think of the recent altercation of the black producer in Hollywood who went to pull money in a parking meter only to end up in jail. Ok, this may not apply to some of you if you are being driven around in a limo. If you should need to move, could you be pretty much assured of renting or purchasing housing in an area, which you can afford and in which you would want to live. Ok, for some of you, you can hire someone to do this. But if you had to do it on your own, what do you think the results would be? Ok, you live in a neighbor few can live in and can be pretty assured that your neighbors in such a location will

be neutral or pleasant to you. Well, it may be hard for you to think about the rest of us, but try. Now this one may apply to you when you go out. Can you go shopping alone most of the time and are pretty well assured that you will not be followed or harassed? I just came across an article in Inside Higher ED entitled “New approaches to attacking the racial /economic achievement gap (essay) (Attacking the Opportunity Gap)” by two white males David Bergerson and Scott Greytak. I do agree that programs that values (there is that word again), “socioeconomic status, place (geographic diversity), and race will produce both higher economic diversity and higher racial diversity than either race alone (affirmative action) or class alone. Such a program as the Intellectual Entrepreneurship program exists in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas Austin. It has proved to be successful without ignoring the fact that racism and “white privilege” is still an issue. As I often say, we all have biases. It is not that we have the bias; it is what we do with it. They have managed to develop and implement a program where over 70% of its interns are from underrepresented groups. and stage, Palmer is one who knows no limits. Personally I love the fact that Palmer is a Hollywood star that grew in the spotlight but still managed to stay out of trouble and somewhat grounded. I believe this keeps her relatable and makes her a good role model on impressionable young girls. Something that she credits to her parents, Sharon and Larry Palmer, for not over exposing her to everything that was Hollywood and for raising her with a good set of morals and values. Her parents also always encouraged her to chase after her dreams and know that anything is possible. These are some of the same messages Palmer hopes girls take away from her portrayal of Cinderella on Broadway, that all things are possible if you believe. “With me being the first African-American to do it (portray Cinderella) on Broadway, it encourages that message,” she told Good Morning America. Going through the roller coaster of excitement for this show with Palmer is someone who is making history as well as the first African American to play the wicked stepmother on Broadway, Sherri Shepherd. Palmer affectionately has said that working with Shepherd is fun and exciting. See Palmer and Shepherd now through January 3rd in Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on Broadway. For And it seems there nothing Palmer can’t do. more information, visit cinderThe actress, singer-songwriter, musician, ellaonbroadway.com. dancer, fashion designer and activist is the youngest person ever to be a talk show host on BET’s Just KeKe. hat little girl doesn’t dream of one day living in a castle in a far away land with her Prince Charming at her side? Even though this is a vision of most little girls regardless of race, the story when told in the case of Cinderella always lacked color. Some would say this made brown girls feel that things of grandeur were unattainable for them. Along came Brandy and Whitney Houston to weave color in the often lily-white story of the mystery glass slipper. Years later color is added once again to the classic tale of Cinderella in the form of another dynamic duo, KeKe Palmer and Sherri Shepherd. Palmer literally grew up before our eyes making her acting debut in 2004 as the niece of Queen Latifah’s character Gina in the film Barbershop 2: Back in Business when she was 11 years old. Now at 21, Palmer has a resume that some veteran actors would envy. The multi-talented phenomenon is unstoppable as she continues to break barriers of color and for her generation. Such a huge burden on her young shoulders Palmer knows the weight that she carries but is taking it in stride as she continues to grow into her own woman. Though she is coming into her own as a young adult Palmer is getting critical acclaim for her historic debut as the lead actress in a classic children’s tale. On opening night (September 9, 2014) of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Palmer was moved to tears as she made her debut as the first African American and youngest to portray Cinderella on Broadway. The rising starlit taking to Instagram prior to her performance saying, “Tonight, my career, my LIFE, is a testament to the power of love; of God’s light! When you embrace him and who you are, when you spread love and kindness, when you stay consistent in your sincerity .. There’s NOTHING you can not do.”

KeKe Palmer strikes a pose.

HEALTH

Junk Food “Junkie” Steps to Kicking the Habit

By Jade Gold, Fitness Writer

I

t’s 1am and your standing in the kitchen. No lights, just the glare of the refrigerator staring back at you. Your eyes are searching for the perfect combination to feed your addiction and all of a sudden, the pantry calls. You take that quick step to the left or right, open the pantry door and your mouth begins to salivate. There in the abyss of the shelves lies a goldmine of peanut butter, 4 different kinds of chips, cereal, snack bars, pop tarts, candy bars and your mind is actually telling your stomach your hungry for them all. In that moment, you realize, the battle between the scale and the junk food pantry is real. You must admit, you’re a junk food “Junkie” In 2005 alone, Americans spent a staggering $60 billion on snack foods! Sugar and salt cravings are often blamed for snack attacks, but how can you stop them? The truth is, processed foods contain carefully orchestrated flavors and other sensory factors designed to be as addictive as possible. This is in stark contrast to whole foods, the taste and consistency of which was created by nature and therefore work with your body to satiate hunger and nutritional cravings. Reporter Michael Moss author of the book Salt Sugar Fat, food man-

ufacturers go to great lengths to find the perfect blend of salt, sugar, fat, and additional flavorings to excite your brain’s reward center, thereby assuring you’ll be back for more. In addition to those basics, the food industry also employs other strategies to increase their products’ addictive nature. This includes: Dynamic contrast. This is when a combination of contrasting sensations produces pleasurable sensations, such as biting through a crunchy chocolate shell, followed by a soft, creamy center filling Salivation response, which boosts taste and feelings of pleasure. E x amples of foods and/or ingredients that promote salivation include butter, chocolate, ice cream, and mayonnaise So, with all this going against us, why do we still have such a hard time kicking the junk food “Junkie” Addiction? Well, here are some sounds steps you can take to help you through the process: 1. Detox or Fasting: One of the most effective ways I know of to eliminate sugar cravings and shed unwanted weight is intermittent fasting, as this will help reset your body to burning fat instead of sugar as its primary fuel. When sugar is not needed for your primary fuel and when your sugar stores runs low, your body will crave it less. Fasting provides a peri-

“engrossing

and

od of concentrated physiological rest during which time the body can devote its self-healing mechanisms to repairing and strengthening damaged organs. The process of fasting also allows the body to cleanse cells of accumulated toxins and waste products. In addition to weight loss, benefits include: elimination of stored toxins that will result in clear skin, healthy teeth and gums, a clean cardiovascular system, reduction of aches and pains in joints, stabilization of blood pressure and more. 2. Stop Skipping Meals: If you skip meals, this will lead to your blood sugar levels going abnormally low and intense cravings start. This also this causes an increase in ghrelin (a neurotransmitter that sets up an irresistible urge to eat) and also lowers neuropeptide Y, which increases carbohydrate cravings. This will lead to an unstoppable desire to eat lots of food and increases your eating frequency, which leads to binging on extra foods better know as JUNK FOOD. 3. Go to Sleep: Do you sleep enough? 7 – 9 hours of sleep is vital to your health. There is a strong link between the amount of sleep people get and their risk of becoming overweight. Sleep deprivation leptin, a blood protein that suppresses appetite, and grehlin, a substance that makes people want to eat. After a night of sleep deprivation, people typically consume 10%

more calories! 4. Exercise: After a person exercises, abnormal cortisol levels lower, dopamine lowers (arousal hormone), and norepinephrine lowers, which leads to appetite suppression and mood stability. While this alone could be pages and pages of good reasons to exercise all by itself, the science alone supports its many added benefits. 5. Drink Water: Water is essential to life and part of every chemical reaction in our bodies. Yet so many people are walking around in a semi-dehydrated state. Many times our body mistakes thirst for hunger. We end up eating food, when in reality we needed water. We can get it in a few different ways, but the educational purpose of this article I’m suggesting you drink it. Just by simply increasing your water intake the hunger pains or junk food cravings will drastically decrease. In hot humid climates, this is also a great benefit to the health of your skin, hair and increases the body’s ability to function and release fat and toxins. While we may each choose to keep a few of our favorites in the closet for the emergency midnight run, choosing a conscious and healthy lifestyle for the grater majority of your food intake will lessen the effects at the very least when trying to kick the habit. Huerta’s Texas Gumbo

H

-E-B’s “Quest For Texas Best “ challenge makes another stop in Houston to recognize George and Rubie Huerta who are among six Houston product makers that were among 25 finalists in this annual competition. The dish that wowed judges is called Huerta’s Texas Gumbo, according to their website “it is a unique blend of Cajun spice and Jalapeño heat making a Tex-Mex Cajun Gumbo, unlike anything you have ever had before. We start with a special recipe of fresh charro beans, prepared in an old Mexican style recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation, combined with specially seasoned meats and sided with our traditional Mexican rice.” The idea for this dish came about one evening over dinner when George decided to mix his chicken with his beans while adding rice and a few other sides. Rubie watched in curiosity and then asked him “What are you doing making gumbo?” It was at that moment a little over two years ago that the Huerta’s came up with idea for their dish. After hosting several tasting

parties with friends to perfect their flavor combinations using a variety of proteins, the couple began selling pots of their Texas Gumbo. And the orders are continue to come in fast. Here’s what some of their fans have written about this Texas style gumbo, “Always yummy...every time we have some at a family function!!! The best!!!” Another reviewer wrote: “Huerta’s Texas Gumbo is the most deliciously different gumbo I have ever had.” The Huerta’s were born and raised in Houston; they enjoyed traditional Mexican and American style food during family meals. Besides being budding entrepreneurs and parents, the couple has full-time jobs. George is an air conditioning technician while Rubie is an executive assistant. If you want to get your own Huerta’s Texas Gumbo just visit their website www.huertastexasgumbo.com to order. BOOK REVIEW In Remembrance of Emmett Till

By Darryl Mace

By Terri Schichenmeyer, Literary Writer

W

hat can you say about tragedy? When it’s imminent, you brace yourself and hope to come out unscathed. In its aftermath, you mourn and, eventually, you move on, healed… but not quite ever the same. Still, what, exactly, can you say about tragedy? Plenty, as you’ll see in the book “In Remembrance of Emmett Till” by Darryl Mace, and the strongest words come from influential places. Mamie Till-Mobley was born in Mississippi but, when she was just two years old, her family joined the Great Migration and settled in Chicago. They left a state where lynching was “an all-to-common experience for blacks” and segregation was a way of life. Things were different in Illinois; there was still racism, but it wouldn’t likely kill anyone. In this less-tumultuous place, Emmett Louis Till was born and raised and, due to his Chicago upbringing, “could not understand what it was like to be black in Mississippi.” Still, as was the habit of many Midwestern African American families at that time, 14-year-old Emmett was sent to spend the summer with an uncle in the south. It was a tragic mistake. In the days following August 31, 1955, when Emmett Till’s body

was pulled from the Tallahatchie River, “print media outlets… sprang into action” to report “yet another senseless murder of a black male…” Publications – both mainstream and black – leaped on the story in days to follow, reporting on “indifference” from Mississippi officials, lack of outrage from white Mississippians at the murder, and the ensuing trial at which the defendants were observed laughing. Interestingly, Mace says that mainstream Midwestern newspapers covered the story differently than did papers in the West and Northeast. African American publications, particularly from the Midwest, also had understandably different angles. They were, he says, the ones to keep the story alive long after the trial ended. “At the time,” Mace further adds, “whites in the Deep South could not see that with his death Emmett Till sowed the seeds of change that would sprout forth into the modern civil rights movement. Regardless of race, Americans… and these members of the Emmett Till generation would change the very nature of race relations in the United States.” I struggled some with “In Remembrance of Emmett Till.” Part of the problem is that this book

ach one, teach one was the philosophy by which legendary great jazz musician Conrad O. Johnson lived his life. He was so committed to the molding of the young mind with music education that he unselfishly gave of his time and money for it. Even years after his death Johnson continues to invest in the lives of youth through music powered by the legacy he left with his family and friends. In 1999, before he was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame, Johnson established the Conrad ‘Prof’ O. Johnson Music and Fine Arts Foundation for the sole purpose of providing

is more academic than I expected; there were times when I was riveted by the information author Darryl Mace uncovered, while other pages made me want to just shelve it awhile. There’s a good sense of time and context here, though, and that helped. Mace gives readers ample opportunity to understand why Till’s violent death wasn’t just “another senseless murder;” why the U.S. was ripe for Civil Rights progress made in the decade after his slaying; and how the press, especially sixty years ago, served its public. Scholars and historians may appreciate more from this book than most, but Mace’s thoroughness will get you through if you casually want to tackle it anyhow. Try “In Remembrance of Emmett Till,” and see what you have to say.

Houston’s youth with music education. This cause is even more vital today with so many schools having to cut their fine arts programs due to budget cuts. The foundation is a safe haven of sorts as it saves youth from negative behaviors of drugs, sex and violence by redirecting their energies on the arts. In addition it provides focus while in the classroom allowing them to excel in the critical areas of math and science. Artie Onayemi, executive director of the foundation, said that children learn discipline and build their self-esteem through music education. “When you build up a child’s self-esteem and self-worth they are going to resist those risky behaviors and peer pressure.” The foundation is also an avenue that according to Onayemi exposes children to venues and experience that they would not normally come across. The Conrad O. Johnson Regional Youth Orchestra has played on stages at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Kennedy Center. Johnson’s youth has received music education from jazz greats as Cora Dunham, Najee, Kirk Whalum, Joe Carmouche, Arnett Cobb,

Ronnie Laws, Arbrie Tucker, James Williams, Phylicia Rashad and others. An education like this is not cheap hence why annually the organizations holds the “Save the Music” golf tournament as one of their major fundraisers. Stemming from Johnson’s son, Ron Johnson’s love of golf, the tournament is now in its 12th year is a way to keep Johnson name alive according to his son who serves as the director of the tournament. Annually it increases in popularity and in funding. Their goal for the 2014 year is to obtain 144 golfers to generate over $14,000. All proceeds benefit the Conrad O. Johnson Regional Youth Orchestra. The golf tournament will kick off on Monday, September 29, 2014 at Weston Lakes Country Club, Fulshear, TX, with registration starting at 7:00 AM. Following the tournament, an awards luncheon will be held. A raffle will also occur where attendees can win liquor, golf accessories, gift certificates for golf supplies and food, among other things. All golf skill sets are encouraged to sign up. Support can be done in 1 of 3 ways: 1. Pay $125 as a golfer in the tournament, 2. Sponsor a hole starting at $250, or 3. Be an underwriter of the tournament starting at $1,000. For more information on everything, visit conradjohnsonfoundation.org or contact Ron Johnson at (832) 746-8983.

Obama Outlines ISIS Strategy: Airstrikes in Syria, More U.S. Forces

t’s time to go after ISIS in Iraq and Syria, President Barack Obama said Wednesday night in a nationally televised address intended to sell stepped-up military efforts to a war-weary public. Announcing a broad campaign against the Sunni jihadists who have rampaged from Syria across northern Iraq, Obama announced an escalated U.S. military role as part of a strategy that includes building an international coalition to support Iraqi ground forces and perhaps troops from other allies. U.S. airstrikes have been hitting the jihadists in Iraq. Those strikes will be expanded to ISIS targets in Syria, Obama said. “I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are,” he said. “That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq. This is a core principle of my presidency: if you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.” The declaration answered calls from a growing number of U.S. politicians for such a step, with increasing public support. “This was a very difficult speech for him to give,” CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger said of a president who campaigned on ending wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “He’s inserted us into the middle of a Syrian civil war.” More U.S. forces to Iraq Obama also announced another 475 American military advisers would go to Iraq, pushing the total figure to about 1,700. At the same time, he made clear the strategy differed from all-out war again in Iraq less than three years after he withdrew combat forces from the country. “It will not involve American combat troops fighting on foreign soil,” Obama said. His address from the White House also sought to convince allies and the nation of a firm U.S. commitment to lead an international coalition to fight the jihadists who rampaged across northern Iraq from Syria this year. They are known as ISIS, ISIL and Islamic State. Noting the formation of a new Iraqi government, which his administration has demanded, Obama announced that “America will lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat.” Objective: “degrade and ultimately destroy” ISIS “Our objective is clear: We will degrade, and ultimately destroy, ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counterterrorism strategy,” he said. Senior administration officials who briefed reporters before the speech on condition of not being identified said airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria would occur “at a time and place of our choosing.” “We’re not going to telegraph our punches by being specific about the time and nature of the targets,” one official said, adding that “we will do that as necessary as we develop targets.” Also Wednesday, Obama shifted $25 million in military aid to Iraqi forces, including Kurdish fighters in the north combating the ISIS extremists. The aid could include ammunition, small arms and vehicles, as well as military education and training, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. U.S. diplomatic efforts this week seek to solidify the coalition. Secretary of State John Kerry left Tuesday to push Sunni leaders in Jordan and Saudi Arabia to join the United States and its allies in combating ISIS, while Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Lisa Monaco, the homeland security adviser,

also will be in the region. Saudis part of coalition “The Saudis made very clear that they support this mission, they will join us in this mission,” a senior administration official said. “We are joined by very important Arab partners as well.” Obama has been criticized by conservatives and some Democrats for what they call a timid response so far to the threat by ISIS fighters. The recent beheading of two American journalists held captive by ISIS raised public awareness of the extremists and the threat they pose. “We can’t erase every trace of evil from the world, and small groups of killers have the capacity to do great harm. That was the case before 9/11, and that remains true today,” Obama said. ISIS poses a threat to the Middle East, including the people of Iraq and Syria, he said, adding: “If left unchecked, these terrorists could pose a growing threat beyond that region, including the United States.” “The next phase is offense” Conservative Republicans who have railed against Obama’s foreign policy sounded relieved by what they heard. “The President’s plan announced this evening is an encouraging step in the right direction,” said GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee and has been a harsh Obama critic. “Success will depend on the details of its implementation.” His Republican colleage, Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, said: “Tonight the President seemed to have faced reality.” Leading Democrats such as Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California and Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York praised the speech, as expected, while Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey said the Foreign Relations Committee he chairs would begin drafting legislation to provide Obama with specific authority under the War Powers Resolution to continue to extend military operations against ISIS. Meanwhile, the anti-war liberal caucus in the House signaled possible opposition by calling for a vote on authorizing expanded military action. Congressional authority Obama has insisted he has the authority to

ratchet up airstrikes against ISIS under war powers granted more than a decade ago to fight al Qaeda. ISIS formed from some al Qaeda affiliates but is separate from the central leadership of the terrorist organization behind the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. This week, he asked Congress for additional authority to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels to fight the ISIS extremists, effectively shifting a covert operation by the CIA to a mission led by the Defense Department. Such authority comes under Title 10 of the U.S. code, which deals with military powers, and Congress could vote on granting it next week. Approval also would allow the United States to accept money from other countries for backing the Syrian opposition forces. Most voices in Congress back strong U.S. action against the ISIS fighters. However, any vote on military action can be risky, especially with congressional elections less than two months off. Fraught politics The fraught politics of the issue were clear when House Republican leaders put off a vote on a government spending measure set for Wednesday after pressure emerged to add the Title 10 authorization to it. Obama initially rejected arming the Syrian opposition against President Bashar al-Assad more than two years ago to avoid getting mired in another Middle East conflict. U.S. officials also feared American weapons could end up in the hands of extremists, such as al Qaeda affiliates that eventually morphed into ISIS. As the tide has turned against Syria’s opposition, which now finds itself fighting both government forces and ISIS, the United States began its covert aid to some rebel factions. “Now we have a two-year track record of relationships with the Syrian opposition,” a senior administration official said. “We have far greater confidence in who we are dealing with.” Until now, the U.S. strategy against ISIS has included airstrikes on the extremists in Iraq to protect several hundred American military personnel there while helping the Iraqis and providing humanitarian support. Veteran diplomat: ISIS worse than al Qaeda Calls for a more forceful campaign against ISIS have increased in recent months. Former U.S. ambassador Ryan Crocker, who served in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, told CNN on Wednesday that ISIS presents a bigger threat to America than al Qaeda. “They are more numerous, they are better armed, they are far better financed, they are better experienced, and perhaps most critically there are several thousand of them who hold Western passports, including American passports,” Crocker said. “They don’t need to get a visa; they just need to get on a plane.” He added: “If we don’t think we’re on their target list, we are delusional.” After his meeting with top congressional leaders at the White House on Tuesday, Obama asked for their support to show the nation was united. He repeated that call in Wednesday’s speech. CNN’s Jim Acosta, Chelsea J. Carter, Diane Ruggiero, Elise Labott, Kevin Liptak, Josh Levs and Faith Karimi contributed to this report.

Houston Texans vs Washington Redskins 2014 Photography by Semetra Samuel

n Sunday, September 7, 2014, Houston Style Magazine was on hand at the NRG StaO dium as the Houston Texans took on the Washington Redskins. The Houston Texans started the season off right under the regime of Head Coach Bill O’Brien along with defen-

sive coordinator Romeo Crennel. The highs of the game were J.J. Watt and the defense containing RGIII and Arian Foster’s 103 rushing yards. The downside is Jadeveon Clowney will be sidelined 6-8 weeks with a meniscus tear. The Houston Texans were able to put a “W” in the win column with a final score of 17-6. It was a great way to start the season off with a win after last season’s 2-14 record. Next on the schedule is the Raiders in Oakland.
