ace -- always a subtext in American politics -- has moved center stage in this year’s presidential campaign. Republican Donald Trump called Democrat Hillary Clinton a “bigot.” Clinton responded by using Trump’s words of racial offense against him. History suggests both parties have fallen short on racial justice. Jefferson Davis Democrats were slave owners, Confederates, against Reconstruction and members of the violent Citizens’ Councils and the KKK. They supported legal segregation, and Southern Dixiecrats opposed the Civil Rights Movement. After the Civil Rights Act was signed July 2, 1964, Democratic Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina turned Republican in September and began the campaign to convert white Dixiecrats to Republicans. Many of today’s Republicans are old Jeff Davis Democrats! In 1968 Nixon adopted this Southern Strategy as a road to the White
POLITICAL By Burt
Black Voters Have Plenty to Lose with Trump House. Reagan launched his 1980 campaign with a racial message of “states’ rights” in Philadelphia, Miss., where Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney were murdered for registering black voters. In 1988, George H.W. Bush introduced us to Willie Horton. After Barack Obama became president, Republicans introduced 395 new voter restrictions targeting blacks. Trump continues this tradition not by using “dog whistles” but a foghorn of racism, religious bigotry, sexism and xenophobia. Trump’s personal history of racial bigotry includes a federal housing discrimination lawsuit; an ad calling for the death penalty of innocent young black males in the Central Park Five rape case; an attempt to discredit Obama’s presidency with the “birther” issue; innuendo suggesting Obama became editor of Harvard’s Law Review because of his race; a campaign demanding Obama’s educational transcripts, implying his admission to colleges rested on something other than intellectual merit; complaints that a judge was unable to treat him fairly in court because of his Hispanic heritage; and promoting false and stereotypical information about the black community. What do blacks have to lose by electing Trump? He will appoint Supreme Court justices who do not support black interests. He will support racially

a b o r D a y, t h i s M o n d a y September 5 is the traditional start to the countdown to the 2016 General Election Day November 8, as ordered by the US Constitution, the second Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Early Voting starts Monday, October 24. While the end of summer beach trips, pool parties and family barbecues will keep some busy, for others it will be anxiety about who to vote for President, along with nearly 100 other posts that will crowd Harris County ballots this year. Harris County has the second longest of all ballots in the country next to Los Angeles with candidates for Congress, Texas Legislature, District Attorney, Sheriff and other posts. Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump attract most attention for the world’s top job, followed by Green Party Jill Stein and Libertarian Gary Johnson on the ballot as the first race. Texas officials have approved 11 write-in candidates for president. “Candidates other than Democrat, Republican, Libertarian and Green have a real uphill battle
not Democratic and black mayors! Blacks haven’t given “blind support” to either party; rather, they have supported both parties when they’ve earned it. Lincoln and the Radical Republicans earned black support. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, won the Civil War and ended slavery. Radical Republicans supported the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments and Reconstruction. When Republicans wearied of advancing black interests, less-than-perfect Democrats began earning black support with better opportunities under FDR’s New Deal. Today’s Democrats are more like Lincoln’s Republicans. Truman desegregated the military; LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, launched a War on Poverty and passed Medicare and Medicaid. Blacks aren’t giving Democrats “blind loyalty” and don’t have permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests. Blacks support those who support them, as all intelligent voters do. Blacks, in coalition, will demand that a Clinton administration more fully address the interests of those most in need as we work to make America greater. You can write to the Rev. discriminatory voting laws like North Carolina’s. He will not fix the damage done by the Shelby court decision to the Voting Rights Act. And he will not support a $15 minimum wage. Blaming black and Democratic officials, this is how Trump addressed their constituents: “You’re living in your poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed.” Who can deny there are many unmet needs and problems in urban areas, but that’s not primarily the result of black or Democratic will, ideas or leadership, but of Republican policies! Democratic and black mayors find themselves governing “the hole” in the donut. The donut’s substance and sugar -- the money for these cities -- is controlled by congressional Republicans, governors and state legislatures dominated by rural and suburban constituencies. Failing cities are not the result of liberal and progressive policies. Democratic ideas and programs that were working have been gutted and purposefully discredited, defunded and attacked ideologically by the very Republicans who did the gutting. Conservative privatization and states’ rights ideologies undercut any ideas or programs that advanced the public good or made us a more perfect union. There are more black elected officials, but their actual power has been weakened through redistricting schemes of stacking and packing. Policy and budget resources are controlled by Republicans,
to get on the ballot — they have to qualify in each state, and all states have their own many different laws,” said Jim Riddlesperger, political science professor at Texas Christian University. “There are literally a couple of hundred folks who declare for president each quadrennial. They represent everything from communists and socialists to fascists and the KKK. All would like to leverage their way onto the ballot, but they rarely succeed for a spot on the ballot,” he said. Texas officials will recognize 11 write-in candidates for President but the deadline for all those options passed. points in 2012. Polls have Trump carrying Texas by six points, which is the closest the race has been in decades. In 2012, President Obama won Harris County 587,044 votes to Romney’s 586,073 or 1,071 votes. Because of Harris County’s increase in minority, especially Hispanic voter registration and Trump’s insults to Hispanics in his primary campaign, it’s not expected to be a close Harris County race for President this fall. Texas’ senior U.S. Senator John Cornyn won two years ago his six-year term. Ted Cruz isn’t on the ballot for U.S. Senator here for another. The next race is Congress. In the Houston area races for US Rep. are done in the primary. Democrats Al Green, Sheila Jackson Lee and Gene Green are likely to win 75-25 races against their GOP opponents and Ted Poe, John Culberson, Kevin Brady, Pete Olson and Brian Babin are likely to win in the 60s or higher against their Democrat opponents. Most State Rep. races are designed to deliver similar results. In Pasadena, Republican Gilbert Pena won by 152 votes or 50.54 percent with Gov. Greg Abbott leading the GOP ticket in his investing

heavily in building on his decades of family and friend relationships in Hispanic communities. Trump won his nomination by making enemies among Mexican Americans. In Pena’s HD 144, the former Democrat Rep. Mary Ann Perez is expected to win. Increase in Hispanics and other minorities, voter registration and turnout in Harris County along with Trump’s discord likely helps Democrat former prosecutor Kim Ogg, who won 48 percent for DA two years ago against DA Devon Anderson, former HPD Officer/ Houston Mayor Pro-Tem Ed Gonzalez and 40 or so Democrat judge candidates. BOOK REVIEW
The Full Tank Life
t the end of the day, you’re out of gas. There’s nothing left in your reserves, not a drop. You’re done, wondering if this is as far as you’ll ever go but somehow open to new suggestions. So read “The Full Tank Life” by Ben Tankard. It might just rev your engine again. Imagine this: you’re driving down the highway on your way to somewhere important, when you glance at the gas gauge and oh, boy, it’s almost on “E.” That’s what your life may be like but Ben Tankard says you can boost your inner fuel with his “Full Tank Life” method. Since it’s easy to do, you can start now. It’s all about D-E-S-T-I-N-Y, he says. Begin by discovering your Dream. Get personal; this is your dream, not what someone else wants for you. Imagine it. Write it down. See yourself in it, then take steps to be in the right Environment to achieve that dream. Tell yourself every day that you’ll have what you want. Say it aloud and make it positive. That will help train your Subconscious to see your path as a decision, not a choice. Learn to see Time in a different way. Don’t waste it, of course, but don’t rush to use it, either. Haste, impatience, not prioritizing, and a lack of attention to detail can make time slip out of your fingers faster than you might realize. Try to keep Inspiration in your life. Find people who can support you, and put yourself in their company as much as possible. Find a mentor, and then be a mentor to someone else. Take advantage of Networks to maintain your outlook and to boost your business and personal life. Finally, remember the most important part of the Full
Tank Life: You! Always be genuine. Do your best with whatever you have at the moment. Work around any roadblock you might find. And above all, don’t listen to naysayers: if your tank is full, you can do this. As faith-based business-slash-inspirational books go, “The Full Tank Life” is okay. Not sterling, not great, but not horrible, either; just okay. Author, pastor, and “Renaissance man” Ben Tankard has a good premise here but, though his advice is solid, it’s similar to a lot of other books. He offers personal anecdotes to illustrate his points but those tales often seem to be elevated, which could smack of boasting. There’s a good amount of repetition here, too, and the lengthy Bible teachings sometimes feel like filler. To the good, however, the information offered is rock-solid. The book is written in an easy step-bystep format (although Tankard says you don’t have to read it that way). And there are helpful worksheets included with each chapter, which allow readers to sort through their thoughts and ideas. The audience for this book, I think, is in the reader with a totally blank slate, or in the businessperson who’s hit pause for just a minute. If you are neither, though, “The Full Tank Life” may only leave you empty. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Harris County to Pay for $45 Million of City Road Improvements Houstontx.gov
A
s part of an agreement approved by Houston City Council today, Harris County Precinct 1 will pay for additional street improvements worth millions of dollars within the Houston city limits by year’s end. This is a continuation of an arrangement Mayor Sylvester Turner and outgoing Commissioner Gene Locke negotiated earlier in the year. A total of $45 million of projects are planned. Harris County has already started work on about seven miles of City streets, including work around NRG Stadium in anticipation of Super Bowl 51. City Council’s vote clears the way for another five plus miles of City streets to be totally reconstructed or overlaid with asphalt by Harris County in the next four months.

brings more viewers back to sport, and put it back on the grand stage. My manager Al Haymon is putting me in position, and is making my dream a reality with my nationally televised bouts. eet Darwin Price: Undefeated Super Lightweight
RB: Darwin tell Houston Style Magazine about yourself. DP: I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. I graduated from Normandy High School, and attended Grambling State University on a full athletic scholarship in track & field. I started running track and boxing at fifteen years old. While attending high school, I became the first African American in the state of Missouri to win: the 1mile, 2 mile and 800m at their state meet in 2012. During my college years, I was awarded SWAC Track & Field MVP seven times, won the Texas Relays in the 1500m race in 2010, and became a 4x regional qualifier for track & field that same year. I enjoyed my experience at Grambling where I graduated with a BS in Sports Management, and became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As an amateur boxer, I amassed nearly 120 bouts and was ranked number six in the country after qualifying for the Golden Glove Nationals. In August 2014, I became a professional boxer and signed with Al Haymon, who is one of the best boxing managers in the business (and also manages Floyd Mayweather). Currently, I hold an undefeated record of (10-0) as a super lightweight, and can’t wait to make it 11-0 against Javontae Starks this weekend. Since becoming pro, I have made Houston my permanent residence so that I could provide a better life for my family and train with Boxing Hall of Famer (2003) Ronnie Shields. Ronnie Shields is one of the most respected trainers in the business, and has solidified a powerful resume with boxing legends such as: Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Vernon Forrest.

RB: You could have qualified in the 2012 Olympics for distance running, what compelled you to become a professional boxer? DP: Yes I could have worked towards competing in the 2012 Olympics for track, but I saw better opportunities with my boxing career. I had the same love for both sports, but a decision had to be made. Also, I figured boxing could put me in a more stable financial situation for the long term. RB: You have been preparing for your upcoming bout against Javontae Starks (13-1) this Saturday in San Antonio, what does training camp consist of? DP: Training camp consists of a lot of different things. Staying focused and ready are the biggest. A lot of things outside of the ring (in your personal life) could take a toll on you, so it’s important to remain focused throughout camp and all the way to “fight night”. A lot of working out is involved; so getting the proper rest is a major factor. In order to maintain strength and endurance, I have to monitor my eating habits and weight daily. Camp can get tough, but it’s up to your team to make sure you have everything you need. I am very thankful for my coach, my team, and my “Pay the Price” supporters. RB: Ali and Mayweather have been known to be serious “trash talkers” who pack a powerful punch what do you bring to the boxing ring ? DP: I see myself as an entertainer as well in my own way. I am here to put on a show for the supporters of boxing! I am going to be one of the fighters who
RB: You are the founder of “Pay the Price” clothing brand, can you tell us about that? DP: Yes I am. My brand not only symbolizes me as a professional fighter, but also symbolizes a lifestyle. Everybody in this world is going the extra mile by “paying the price” to get where they want in life and become successful. It’s always a price to pay in life no matter what it is you set your mind on! So far, my fans have been very responsive to my clothing brand. I have everything from t-shirts to fitted baseball caps, so stay tuned for official “Pay the Price” merchandise in local retail stores and pop up shops. RB: What’s next for Darwin “Pay the Price” Price? DP: You know what’s next, I am just focusing on building my brand and winning the next fight they put in front of me. I love to give back by speaking and mentoring today’s youth from underserved communities, and supporting charitable causes. As a leader, I want to continue to surround myself around positive people, but most of all I just want to pave the road as an undefeated champion who can say he left a legacy for his two daughters. Younger Heart Attack Survivors Have Higher Risk of Premature Death
By American Heart Association News
P
eople age 50 and younger have almost twice the risk of premature death after a heart attack — mainly due to heart disease and other smoking-related diseases, according to new research. The study is based on data from 21,693 heart attack survivors age 50 and younger who were compared to 216,930 people from the general population and followed for an average of 11 years. Four of every five heart attack survivors were men and their average age was 45. The majority of heart attack survivors — 83.6 percent — were 40-49 years old and 1.8 percent were under age 30. Researchers found: • In 1980-89 and 2000-09, heart attack deaths declined from 12.5 percent to 3.2 percent within 30 days, 5.1 percent to 1.6 percent within 31-365 days and 24.2 percent to 8.9 percent within one-10 years. • Patients age 50 and younger had a 1.89 times greater risk of death among oneyear survivors compared to the general population. • Among one-year survivors, women were three times more likely and men 1.7 times more likely to die after a heart attack compared to the general population. Researchers said the reason for this

difference is unclear. “Although 30-day risk of death following a heart attack has decreased markedly in the last 30 years, younger patients should still have concerns about their long-term health,” said Morten Schmidt, M.D., Ph.D., lead study author and a researcher at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark. “It is estimated that half of the decline in deaths from heart attacks since 1980 is attributable to primary prevention and, in particular, the reduction in the number of patients who smoke. The other half is likely attributable to a combination of things such as the introduction of early treatments that restore blood flow to the part of the heart muscle damaged during a heart attack, improvement in hospital organization and better management of high blood pressure and high cholesterol.” Cardiovascular disease risk factors were higher among the heart attack group than the general population, including angina (11.7 percent

thought I would share this story with you. I continue to say that attending the summer the Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Workshop is a life-changing event. But this is the one first one who has talked about the healing nature of it. Over 4000 trainees and others have attended the workshop since 2003. I have shared a number of their stories, but this one is special and I wanted to share it and express publically our appreciation to those leaders from HDEART institutions and others who provided both financial and in-kind support so that the 2016 Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice Workshop would take place. I am one who believes that one greater than us all works through us to accomplish good. I was perusing through the thousands of picture taken by the professional photographer, when I came across the photo above with two women embracing each other. I had no idea of that the picture, taken at the workshop, would foretell the subsequent mentoring relationship between my mentee and the other young lady in the picture. The young lady is beginning her second year of doctoral studies. She hails from Minnesota, and earned her MPH at Jackson State. Her first year as a doctoral student was rife with challenges and filled with unexpected barriers – most not of her own doing. She deeply questioned her purpose, and was prepared to give up on her doctoral aspirations and leave. Then enters my mentee. My mentee took this young scholar

The risk of heart attack can be greatly reduced by quitting smoking, exercising and following a healthy diet — behaviors that also help prevent a second heart attack. “Even though you survive a heart attack at an early age, you remain at an increased risk of another attack later in life,” Schmidt said. “For the same reason, it is important that patients make efforts to reduce this long-term risk by adhering to the prescribed medical therapy and by improving their lifestyle, especially by stopping smoking,”
under her wing unofficially – who advised her to work closely with another faculty (also a former mentee) during the Spring term. For the summer, the student was provided an opportunity to work with my mentee on a funded project – but with a caveat. In order to take advantage of the summer project opportunity and funding, the student had to attend the Summer Workshop. Given the impact the workshop had on my mentee, she knew it would reinvigorate this student’s passion, and it did. The trainee, who was ready to leave and return home, was among those who rose nearly each time to attend the workshop, and asked questions of presenters. She then returned to school and worked on my mentee’s project and on papers and got back on track academically. More importantly, the young scholar was reinvigorated spiritually. www.StyleMagazine.com
As my mentee said, as she was relating the above story: “You see - I know the workshop is an incredible tool for instruction. But it is also a means to ‘heal’ - - - being part of it has healed so many bruised and battered souls, those who felt alone, disengaged, lost and directionless. Those trainees with a sense of what they want to do, but without a compass or a rudder. Being part of the workshop is like being handed magical lenses that allow one to see with binocular and with microscopic vision simultaneously. One sees where one currently is, where one should be headed, and where one’s place is in the larger scheme. Importantly, one sees they’re not alone. A dense fog of uncertainty hid peers from one another. But attending and being engaged in the workshop lifts the fog. It gives participants a sense of clarity and validity.” Stories like this are what make the workshop unique and so different from other disparities workshops. It is the reason there are internationally renowned faculty with who reserve time on their calendars for over a decade now, to participate and invest in this event. For these reasons, we are thankful for the support of the HDEART institutions that stepped forward to provide support.

On the Gridiron: Texans Outlook for 2016
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
H
earts across the U.S. are relieved as the return of the football season is now upon us. Some call it the best time of the year to gather with friends and family, rep your team colors and let the trash talk flow. Couch analysts have already made their predictions and placed their bets as teams continue to make final decisions about their rosters. Yes, ladies and gentlemen we are ready for some football. On the hometown front, it seems that the Houston Texans and fans are more than ready as well. We picked the brain of Houston Texans fan enthusiast, commentator, and author of The Gridiron Guide Natasha L. Gransberry about the outlook of the Texans this season. Being a student of the game of football since practically birth, Gransberry is from a family of football coaches on different levels from the high school field on up and learned not only from those who coached the game but also from those who played the game. Deep in her heart, she feels that she is a qualified commentator but not necessarily an analyst since she has not actually played the game in a professional capacity. But most importantly she is a Texans fan through and through bleeding red, white and blue. Gransberry is ecstatic about this upcoming season, as she believes the Texans are finally moving in the right direction to get things together. One of the biggest areas of improvement for the team was a lack of consistency. “If we could just get through September with the same quarterback we would be heading in the right direction. I think the offensive sees that. They need to know who they’re giving the ball to. Who is the quarterback? We need that consistency,” said Gransberry as she noted all of the past starting quarterbacks the Texans have had just last year alone. With Brock Osweiler in a stable place, she has faith that the team is on the right path. “I think we’re on the path of where we need to be as quarterbacks to start building something around that.” As the head, a quarterback gives a team direction but he can’t do it alone with a good offensive team behind him he can have that needed support. With a few setbacks here and there Texans have been shaping up the offensive team to be a productive powerhouse. “I see some steadiness for us. We have so many offensive weapons and receivers this year that’s going to be a great opportunity for Brock to get his hands dirty with options of who to throw the ball to.” Pointing out the Texans’ subpar depth at receiving, Gransberry expressed, “Not only did we upgrade quarterback wise we made some great additions to our receiver corner.” The defensive team was thought to be in trouble with the announcement of JJ Watt’s surgery over the summer however Gransberry was always under the belief that the defensive team could handle the job without JJ if they had to do so. Using the analogy that the defense team is like a great tasting cake and JJ is the icing and decorations, Gransberry gave a great illustration. “(JJ is) every bit of enhancement that adds the value to your cake. You still will have 10
Sept 1 - Sept 7, 2016
a great cake without the decorations it just won’t be the same without him. So we definitely need him but without him, I hope to see more out of (Jadeveon) Clowney and our other defensive parts to pick up the slack as much as they can. “ The fan turned sports author gives more sports knowledge in her new book released this year, The Gridiron Guide. Unlike most sports book that separates sports knowledge from others aspects like tailgate life and fan life, Gransberry gives the ultimate guide hitting on the topics of the basics of understanding the game of football, fan life, tailgate life, sports bar life, and travel. The book is broken down into four quarters with the majority of the quarters dedicated to the education of the game. Gransberry started out as a huge fan just posting her adventures with the Texans at home and away games on her social media sites. Soon she started being bombarded with questions, mostly from women, on everything about knowledge of the game to how to score great tickets. Naturally, her next thoughts were, “This needs to be in a book.” So she got to work. Initially, Gransberry thought it would be a great book for ladies to really understand the game and learn why some men cherish the game so much (And yes, she dives deep into that subject. More later below.) However, she found out that even men liked the book as they are learning about aspects of the game that they didn’t know about. In researching for her book, she consulted with a former NFL player would found the information on tailgate life very informative. He said with playing the game on the field he had no idea about what happen during tailgate so he is proud to now know how a proper tailgate should go down. Other men have found her tips for planning to travel to away games and getting tickets extremely helpful. Turning back to the subject of why men love the game so much, Gransberry believes it is all in the way boys and girls are brought up. When boys are born usually one of the first gifts they receive is a football. They are literally groomed from birth to play the game, whereas girls are geared to not play the game but to cheer on the guys as performers in the role of cheerleader or dancer. This idea is further ingrained at family gathers when women are generally excluded when the guys go outside to play football and the women usually stay in the house to cook dinner. Gransberry’s big question is when looking at this data where women are excluded for a minimum of 20 years (unless they have siblings, parents or some other kind of sports connection), “When did anybody teach the game to girls?” The answer is www.StyleMagazine.com
they didn’t. Girls are left out of the football conversation so there is sometimes a disconnect when it comes to women trying to understand why men love the game so much. Until they make a personal choice to want to learn about the game for themselves according to Gransberry. Diving deeper into this subject in her book, she gives some rules to man cave law, best times to learn the game (and it is not while your football lover is actually watching the game), and learning to have a mutual respect and love for the sport. Beyond her book, Gransberry has taken her football education and given it wheels with workshops that she hosts with professional athletes to give others more game knowledge of how to play, knowing the terminology, learning what the calls mean, and all aspects. Attendees have even played the game to implement the knowledge that they have gained and really put the training into practice. Workshops are promoted through Gransberry’s Facebook group Pumps. Cleats.Couture: Fashionable Sports Talk. No longer are we saying are you ready for some football because football season is finally here. Pull out your red, white and blue and let’s cheer on the home team. Let’s go Texans! Find out more information about Gransberry and her book on TheGransberry.com and coming soon to Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

ombine their acting experience and you’ve got over 45 (!) years in Hollywood, an incredible feat in an industry known to both elevate and consume its actors. But when it comes to the gifted Regina Hall and Morris Chestnut, it’s been a road that has endeared them to an entire generation. After turning heads with her standout role in the Wayans’ brothers Scary Movie franchise, Hall would go on to star in Malibu’s Most Wanted, Paid In Full and both installments of Think Like A Man alongside Kevin Hart. Then there’s Chestnut; renowned for his role as Ricky Baker in Boyz n the Hood, he’s gone on to craft an impressive string of hits and is currently gearing up for the second season of the NAACP-nominated series Rosewood. Now the duo is teaming up for When the Bough Breaks, a psychological thriller that centers on the John and Laura Taylor (Chestnut and Hall) as they strive to have a child. After running out of options, they decide to use a surrogate (Dallas native Jaz Sinclair) but get more than they bargained for once she becomes obsessed with John. We weren’t able to pry out any major spoilers, but they took some time to speak to the press, giving their thoughts on Hollywood, the film and more. Be sure to support When the Bough Breaks when it lands in theaters September 9, 2016. On opportunities in Hollywood: Chestnut: I think just being able to be working, it’s a definitely a blessing. Hollywood in general, the opportunities are increasing, but we could be doing much better.
Morris Chestnut & Regina Hall: On Staying Power & When The Bough Breaks
Hall/Chesnut
On how her character was duped by their surrogate in the film: Hall: I think in her desire for a child, that sixth sense doesn’t kick in because once someone is implanted by your embryo, your desire for what you want clouds that. Human beings are complex, sometimes life goes in directions that no one expects. Experiences during the filming process: Hall: I play a chef in the film and the backdrop of the city [New Orleans] is huge. Their cuisine, their way of cooking. It’s incredible. Chestnut: It takes a toll on you. As an actor, for this type of film having to be in that space day in and day
out, it’s really draining. On longevity and selecting roles: Chestnut: I like to start with a script. It’s all about execution. In terms of longevity, you have to be courteous and respectful of people that you work with. You don’t want any friction or conflict. [On the set of Boyz n the Hood] I was always asking Cuba Gooding Jr. questions. I’m sure he got tired of me, but I was soaking it all in. Hall: It’s about looking and picking the right parts. Always trying to continue picking great roles and making sure that you’re always doing your best.

Chef Rhonda Russell is the Real Deal on Food and Wine By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer
A
crowd of foodies and wine lovers gathered at 9411 Richmond Avenue in Houston to watch Food Network’s Cooks Vs. Cons which featured Wine Maker and Executive Chef, Rhonda Russell. She is a Wine Sommelier, a Certified Personal Chef, and is the only African American female Chef of Wine Arts according to her website. Originally from Louisiana, Russell started her culinary training in the kitchen with her grandmother who was well known for her talent as a baker and all around great cook. Young Rhonda, “who was frequently recruited to wash dishes, would stir in ingredients and serve as an overall cook’s assistant, Little did she know, she was being exposed to the world of Louisiana culinary art and igniting a passion to share this world with all in a very unique and gifted way. “ Moreover, for the past several years, Chef Rhonda has worked with many clients to “demystify food and wine pairings.” In fact, Russell used her training and experience to create her very wine label and wine shop called The Taste by Chef Rhonda. While the crowd continued to gather, we started our evening over a glass of Chardonnay that paired beautifully with the crab and corn bisque, which was seasoned to perfection, and showcased the Creole Pope/Russell flavors that paid homage to her Louisiana roots. The soup was creamy, warm, and finished with a kick of cayenne pepper that didn’t overwhelm the dish. Shortly thereafter, we tasted some of the C h e f ’s h o m e m a d e pickled okra and cherry tomato salad. Next, Chef Rhonda introduced our table to one of her most requested wines called “Syrah Rose,” in my view, this wine was the best taste I had all evening. It captures all the things that this writer loves about wines, light, bubbly, and crisp with a smooth finish. This was paired with a Red Velvet Waffle, Pretzel and Pecan Coated Fried Chicken topped with a Black Cherry Compote. The dish was well composed with the crunchy bite of chicken and the slight sweetness of the waffle that was savory as well as satisfying. Subsequently, as we enjoyed this savory delight, we watched as our Chef was eliminated in the first round of the Culinary Competition, for the same dish that sat before us. Moreover, we jokingly convinced ourselves that Russell’s ingredients had to have been sabotaged during her segment on the Food Network debut. Finally, to say that the tasting experience with Chef Rhonda was good would definitely be an understatement, this writer highly encourages you to visit her shop, join her wine club, bring some friends, have something to eat and savor every moment of your visit. Learn more about Russell and her store by going to http://www. tastebychefrhonda.com/home.html. Thanks for reading, and keep following Houston Style on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
