COMMENTARY

Jesse Jackson

National Writer

T

his week, the independent commission convened by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon in the wake of the Michael Brown Jr. killing in Ferguson, Mo., released its report: “Forward through Ferguson: A Path toward Racial Equality.” The Commission’s 16 volunteers were tasked with doing a “thorough, wide-ranging and unflinching study of the social and economic conditions” that impede progress in the St. Louis region. They have provided a compelling document, detailing concrete reforms that would begin to address the entrenched reality that lies behind the Ferguson troubles: a society that is still divided by race, still too separate and unequal. Nearly 50 years after the Kerner Commission Report in the wake of the urban riots of the 1960s, America remains divided. The commission does not hide from the truth: “We know that talking about race makes a lot of people uncomfortable. But make no mistake: this is about race.” “(R)ace remains at the root of the violence, as ... every riot studied” is the “result of white law enforcement harming a black civilian.”

POLITICAL By

Separate and Unequal: The Ferguson Report “We have not moved beyond race.” The report arrays the statistics that prove this reality. St. Louis is the 5th most racially segregated of 50 large metro areas in the United States. Between 2000 and 2013, the number of residents living below the federal poverty line in St. Louis’ suburbs grew by 53 percent. In 2012, 17.8 percent of all children in St. Louis County and 41.7 percent of all children in St. Louis city lived below the poverty line. Failure to address the economic mobility of poor children is projected to decrease the United States GDP (gross domestic product) by about 4 percent per year over the lifetime of these children, costing the entire country about $7 trillion (Putnam, 2015). “These divides we’ve created,” the commission reports, “between Black and White, between rich and poor and middle class -- are bad for all of us, not just some of us. The commission allows that there are no easy answers but that inaction is not an option anymore. They understand that the citizens they address may live in very different realities. “If you live in a safe suburb, and you’ve got a good job, and you’ve got health insurance, and you never worry about your kids’ schools, and you don’t wonder if you might get pulled over because of the color of your skin, then maybe the status quo is working just fine for you. “But for thousands of St. Louisans, the status quo is killing them. The status quo means living in a food desert, with no grocery stores for miles around. The status quo means sending your children to underperforming schools that get fewer resources but dole

out more punishments. The status quo means driving in fear of a court system that will put you in jail for failure to pay a traffic ticket. Are we as a region really willing to live with that status quo?” The commission details commonsense reforms to redress the structural inequalities and injustices that are increasingly unsustainable. They begin with reforms in police practices on the use of force and with sentencing reforms. They expose and condemn the process by which poor towns use traffic tickets as a central source of municipal revenue and then jail the impoverished who can’t afford to pay their tickets, stripping them of jobs and hope in the process. But the commission understands that the problem goes far beyond police and judicial procedures. It details the inequities in education, and calls for reforms that will begin to give poor children a fairer start. It challenges inequities in school discipline practices. It addresses economic inequality, calling for ending hunger, extending early childhood health and education, raising the minimum wage, ending predatory lending, increasing affordable housing, developing better and affordable mass transit, and of course for more jobs -- all vital to giving the working poor a chance to survive. And it bravely calls for direct efforts to address racial equality, to discuss particularly implicit bias and well as institutional or structural bias that too often stacks the deck against people of color. The commission members are well aware of the fate of most such reports, which are released, get 15 minutes of press attention and then are

lost in the shelves. They know that the state legislature isn’t about to pass costly reforms. They know that Ferguson can’t solve the problems by itself. But the citizen commissioners argue that it is essential to start trying: “In trying, new coalitions will be built, and a new sense of community will be developed. As the region tries together, people will learn new things from each other, and generate new ideas....” “The idea of ‘a culture of trying’ is not new to the St. Louis region,” the report asserts. “Our opportunity in this moment is to apply that culture to the uncomfortable realities we’ve set aside for too long.” Ferguson is not unique. There is a Ferguson in every state. Entrenched poverty, institutionalized racism, unjust police and prosecutorial practices, unequal education and opportunity are a blight in every state. We have come a long way since the days of segregation, but as the Commission realizes, “we have not moved beyond race.” Police killings of unarmed African Americans have now sparked national demonstrations asserting that “Black Lives Matter.” The Ferguson Commission has produced a compelling report with clear priorities and sensible steps forward. We know the way forward. The only question is whether Americans will decide that it is time to move. You can write to the Rev. Autumn Signals Sprint to November 3rd City Elections

Burt Levine, Political Writer

W

ith just about a month until early voting begins October 19th for the November 3rd Houston City Elections sparks between the candidates are beginning to heat up just as the weather outside begins to cool down. The last day to register to vote or change your voting address is October 5th. After more than 30 mayor candidate forums from one ideological or geographic Houston area to the other. State Rep. Sylvester Turner in his third run for the city’s top job remains the front-runner. The fight among the five others in the top tier of the 13 running for mayor is to see who gets the second spot on November 3rd and then faces Turner in the December run-off. Former Sheriff, former City Council Member and former Houston Police Officer Adrian Garcia remains likely to snatch the run-off second spot having raised millions of dollars, fired up cross-over communities and motivated the city’s usually electorally weak Hispanic plurality to vote. Former Kemah Mayor Bill King has coalesced conservative communities and business blocks to back him while

4

former city attorney Ben Hall is bringing together religious African American and Right-wing Republican Christian conservatives to rally an anti-hero (Houston Equal Rights Ordinance/gay rights) march to the polls. Engineering firm owner and At Large Council Member Steve Costello continues to raise millions of dollars as he continues to spend on huge broadcast television commercial buys. Deputy Houston City Controller Chris Brown has raised more campaign contributions than all five of his opponents combined, spent less then all his opponents combined and with support from former At Large Council Member Peter Brown (his father) and current controller (Ronald Green) has earned most of the endorsements he hopes will win him the job without a run-off. With eight candidates vying to succeed Costello for At Large 1 City Council, Harris County Chair of the Democratic Party and former Gay Caucus President Lane Lewis has worked the longest to earn most of the endorsements he hopes will snag him a top slot. Former CEO of the Harris County Housing Authority Tom McCasland

Sept 17 - Sept 23, 2015

has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to put him in the top slot. Former Houston Policeman Mike Knox hopes his work in GOP politics puts him in the run-off. Griff’s pub founder Michael “Griff” Griffin is also a favorite among many that grew up enjoying sports and youth causes Griff promoted and could do well in that race too. With four opponents, At Large 2 incumbent David Robinson hopes to win 50 percent of the vote this November to avoid a December run-off. His opponents are former At Large 2 incumbent Rev. Andrew Burks, Rev. Willie Davis, former At Large 2 candidate Moe Rivera and attorney Eric Dick. With three lesser known opponents At Large 3 incumbent Michael Kubosh has worked hard to keep together an unprecedented and demographically diverse support base across Houston he hopes will keep him from facing a run-off. With seven candidates working to succeed term limited former Houston Police Chief Clarence Bradford for At Large 1, businesswoman Laurie Robinson is tirelessly working to cobble her base of pro-business, church, teacher

and law enforcement support to get into the run-off as well as are attorney Amanda Edwards, retired Air Force officer Roy Morales, former golf pro Matthew Murphy and school teacher John Hansen. With At Large 5 incumbent Jack Christie hoping to avoid a run-off with heavily funded President Obama enthusiast Philippe Nassif, he faces African American real estate enthusiast J. Brad Batteau and others. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

A Man At the Top of Houston’s Sports Mt. Rushmore: Moses Malone

White, Feature Writer

f you ask any basketball player or fan that watched Moses Malone play none of them have a story that rivals what you would hear about Jordan or Magic. There are no highlights of him jumping over players dunking or of him soaring threw the sky. Moses Malone wasn’t the guy that needed the highlight reel because he was the guy that kept the train on the tracks. Sadly Malone’s train stopped when he died in his sleep on Sunday, September 13, 2015 in Norfolk, Virginia. He was 60 years old. It was said by the Virginia medical examiner’s office that Malone died from hypertensive and atherosclerotic heart disease. Malone will be remembered for being a first class Hall of Fame baller. The first player to officially come out of high school Malone was consistent and productive from 1974-1995 with a career that spanned from the ABA to the NBA; a career that included a championship and multiple MVP Awards. In today’s NBA where most of the focus is on shooting three’s and dunking the

basketball, Moses Malone became a basketball legend for rebounding. I didn’t stutter, the man won three MVP Awards, two in Houston. As a matter of fact he won two MVP Awards and was named an NBA All

Star in six seasons with the Houston Rockets. In what many deem one of the most successful stretches ever for an NBA player. Before the Olajuwon years there is really only one chapter in the

Houston Rockets Basketball that mattered and that’s the chapter Moses Malone helped to create. He not only played here in Clutch City but he made a home here and made friends and legacies that still matter till this day. Moses Malone is the definition of a professional basketball player. He knew what he did well and he did it with efficiency and skill set that most players just don’t have anymore. If there is a Mt. Rushmore of Houston athletes it starts with Hakeem Olajuwon, Earl Campbell and Moses Malone. For all the hype James Harden, JJ Watt and this new generation gets men like Moses Malone actually won titles and MVP Awards. The city of Houston will always remember this Titan of the game and so will the rest of the NBA and it’s fans. Malone’s funeral has been set for Saturday, September 19th at Lakewood Church on the same grounds where he built his legacy as a legend in the NBA. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

Adrian Garcia Wants to Be Houston’s 1st Hispanic Mayor

Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

O

n November 3rd, Adrian Garcia hopes to make history in Houston as the city first Hispanic mayor. But that is not his goal in wanting to be the city’s top dog. It is his sense for wanting to improve the quality of life for all Houstonians as the fuel for his mayoral run. One look at Garcia’s history and you know one thing. He must love Houston. Serving 23 years protecting and serving citizens as a member of the Houston Police Department, six years on Houston’s City Council and then another eight years as Harris County Sheriff, Houston has his heart on a string for sure. It was while in this city that Gracia was able to dream and think big and act on those dreams to succeed. He wants to cultivate that vision for Houstonians now and into the future. He knows it will take some time but he is willing to put in the work and here’s his plan. Houston is a great city but has it set of issues. Most concerning to Garcia are those surrounding the city budget, infrastructure and the education of students. Weighing heavy on his mind is the estimated $126 million budget shortfall, that some say maybe higher than predicted, for FY2016. Oftentimes the answer to problems of this nature is to raise taxes. However, Garcia’s stance

is not to raise taxes but to examine the efficiency of departments’ budgets. He believes in streamlining the way departments are spending dollars to ensure that money is being utilized in the correct manner while relying on today’s technology. If it one thing Houstonians can all agree on it is our hatred of potholes. Garcia is complaining right along with us. Understanding that the more than 4,000 potholes in our city are a barrier from Houstonians to work and play, Garcia wants to reform the City’s Department of Public Works by increasing the response times to repair the potholes. He knows this alone will not help keep traffic moving in Houston so he also wants to integrate a multimodal transportation system for more movement in various forms. Handing of our finances better and ensuring safer roadways are things to make our future better now and beyond. Enhancing that focus even further is the investment in our children and that begins with their education. Garcia believes that education should begin as early as possible so he supports full-day, high quality pre-k to strengthen a child’s performance. He also encourages more businesses to get involved with schools to create that community partnership for economic growth.

Garcia says he is an executive with a multiscope focus to help Houston become the best it can be. His track record of success is proof that he is equipped and ready to handle the job on day one. For more information about Adrian G a r c i a , v i s i t w w w. adriangarcia. com.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Partida Tequila By Monica Jones, Special to Style

A

lthough the summer months are cooling down, Partida Tequila is the perfect spirit to warm up any girl’s night out, a holiday weekend or perhaps to kick off the celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. Uniquely crafted Partida utilizes 100% blue agave, which is grown near a dormant volcano in the Tequila Valley. The all-natural tequila separates itself from other premium tequilas with its state-ofthe-art stainless steel ovens that produce a smoother and cleaner agave taste. Partida’s Blanco is blended perfectly with a hint of citrus, fresh herbs, and tropical fruit; a refreshing aroma of flavors that are crisp to pair with almost any mixer. The Blanco tequila owes its smoothness to the meticulous aging process in which agave is aged for more than 7 years in the same barrels once used to perfect the taste of Jack Daniel’s whiskey. One can practically get lost in the bottle of Reposado, which is rich and smooth with a touch of sweet. Hints of vanilla, hazelnut, and almond make up the Reposado’s heavenly finish. Unlike its competitors, Partida Tequila uses a unique blend of agave that is ripe and complex in structure. The agave plant is most known for being used for virtually everything from food and drink to shoes, rope, and medicine dating back to as early as the 1500s. The popular elixirs Mezcal and Tequila are an influence to the history and pride of the Mexican culture. In honor of the month long celebration of the Hispanic Heritage culture, enjoy these sweet yet spicy concoctions from Partida Tequila to highlight and celebrate the rich culture of Mexican heritage:

Good Talks About New Role in Thriller ‘Minority Report’

Erica Ponder, Feature Writer

M

any are anticipating the season premiere of this fall’s line up. One actress in particular has fans really excited as she is shacking up primetime with a role where she ditches cute and sassy for tough and rough as Detective Vega in Fox’s ‘Minority Report.’ Over the course of her career we have seen actress Meagan Good play a range of roles. From the good girl next door, the hot girl friend, the devoted wife but rarely do we see her kick butt. Because of her petite frame, Good is not always seen as someone who can do action roles so all are in for a surprise when this show debuts. Being tough is a connecting characteristic for Good and the character Detective Vega. That factor has allowed her to have an “incredible time” playing Detective Vega. She further described her character as someone that is “a lot like myself in the sense that she is extremely determined, and she really follows her heart. She moves to the beat of her own drum. She’s not easily convinced by other people. She’s just a person that really comes from instinct and heart. Outside of her being a lot like me, she’s this character whose willing to take risks… She’s bold, she’s strong, she’s aggressive, she’s sarcastic, but she’s vulnerable under it all…”

Meagan Good

This role comes at a good time in her life as she is in a mood of transition. “I think I’m in a different place in my life as well. Being in my thirties, I’ve never felt more confident. I’ve never had more love for myself. I’ve never been just so in tune with being married and my relationship with God, and the incredible things that are going on in my family and my career… It’s a different season, so this character feels very much like a rite of passage, you know. I feel the shift, not just in my life, but in the type of character I’m playing, and she is extremely complex,” she revealed. Her character is not the only thing that is complex and so is ‘Minority Report.’ The sci-fi/ action is what Good calls a thriller, action-

packed, emotionally charged show. It is definitely a show that is sure to have audiences on the edge of their seat. “The show is about this psychic who he and his siblings can see the future. And the things that they see in the future are murders days before they happen. And the three of them combined somehow can get a name of the murderer, a name of the victim, and some type of remnant of where this might happen,” she said. One of the three psychics actually feels the murders when they happen and is able to experience the victim’s point of view. As a result, he teams up with Good’s character and together they illegally try to stop these murders against all odds. Roles like these help Good to break barriers and stereotypical expectations because the character is “written colorless.” Good continued, “She (Detective Vega) is a human being first, but no matter what, she’ll always be a Black woman, because I am a Black woman. And so I think in that way it definitely is breaking barriers. I think the cast is very diverse, and the world is a representation of the world that we live in and the world that we will live in, which is diverse in everything. And I’m glad and I’m thankful to be doing a show that really shows that, but doesn’t make a thing of it, because it doesn’t need to be a thing. It is what it is... It’s

showing that the barriers shouldn’t even be there.” Other than her excitement for being a part of ‘Minority Report,’ Good is happy to announce that she produced a film called ‘A Girl Like Grace’ that has been winning a lot of awards from being on the film festival circuit. It is about a young girl living in a small town while her best friend committed suicide and her mother is dealing with promiscuity and alcoholism. ‘Minority Report’ is scheduled to premiere on Monday, Sept. 21 a 9/8 p.m. Central. Moderno: Design for Living in Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela, 1940–1978

T

he Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin presents Moderno: Design for Living in Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuela, 1940–1978. Organized by the Americas Society in New York, the exhibition is the first to examine how design transformed the domestic landscape of Latin America, during a period marked by major stylistic developments and social and political change. The presentation features over 130 works, including furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and graphic design by Lina Bo Bardi, Clara Porset, Miguel Arroyo and others. To further highlight this innovative chapter in the history of Latin American modernism, the Blanton’s showing will expand upon the New York presentation to include additional furniture, domestic objects, and a selection of Brazilian, Mexican, and Venezuelan paintings from both the Blanton’s holdings and private collections. “We are pleased to bring Moderno to Austin, and to build upon the Blanton’s tradition of presenting and collecting Latin American art,” remarked Blanton Director Simone Wicha. “Austin is a city rich with architects, designers, and those who love design, and we expect visitors to be engaged and inspired by this dynamic collection of objects. We are grateful to the Americas Society for the opportunity to share this important new scholarship.” Sheltered from the overall destruction and disarray of World War II, many Latin American countries entered an expansive period of economic growth and artistic activity in the late 1940s through the 1950s. Modernism was viewed as a fitting and progressive styleparticularly for Brazil, Mexico, and Venezuelaand domestic design was endorsed as an agent for development and vehicle for innovation. By encouraging “a modern way of living” as an ideology, Latin American governments leveraged the movement to further their goals of modernizing the region’s major cities. As a result, a new crop of Latin American artists, architects, and designers emerged, including a large number of women. National art scenes flourished, new design vocabularies were invented, and designers began to see themselves as active players in the creation of modern national identities. Designers in Latin America were influenced by an influx of European and North American creatives

during the 1940s and 50s. They also drew inspiration from the work of the Bauhaus school and other European avant-garde groups of the period. Although Latin American designers incorporated the tenets of European and North American modernism into their work, they retained the cultural nuance and artistic traditions of their respective countries and utilized local materials, further contributing to the area’s economic expansion. Fostered by Latin American governments and widely embraced by their metropolitan centers, Latin American designers rose to prominence and developed an international profile. In 1941, New York’s Museum of Modern Art hosted an international design competition, “Organic Design in Home Furnishings,” which featured a section devoted to Latin American design. This exhibition played a significant role in further establishing Latin American designers as players on an international stage. Moderno presents new scholarship in the field of Latin American art and design, bringing together superb examples of furniture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and printed material from artists and designers including: Sergio Rodrigues, Lina Bo Bardi, Joaquim Tenreiro, and José Zanine Caldas of Brazil; Don Shoemaker, Clara Porset, and Pedro Ramírez Vásquez of

Mexico; and Miguel Arroyo and María Luisa Zuloaga de Tovar of Venezuela. It is accompanied by a 200-page hardcover catalogue that includes contemporary essays, as well as newly translated historical texts on design. Publication of the catalogue will be celebrated at a special event at the Blanton, during the run of the exhibition. The exhibition is organized by Americas Society, Inc., and made possible by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Arts; the New York State Council of the Arts; the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; PRISA/ Santillana USA; Mercantil; SRE/AMEXCID – CONACULTA – INBA and the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York; Jaime and Raquel Gilinski; Mex-Am Cultural Foundation; Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros; and Grupo DIARQ.
