ashington is girding itself for what will be an historic visit by Pope Francis this week. So many are expected to flock into the city that government employees are encouraged to work at home. The pope will address a joint session of Congress, celebrate mass, meet with the president and tend to the impoverished. He may meet with the low-wage workers who serve food to the senators and not just with the senators. He will then go to Philadelphia and New York, give an address on climate change and possibly celebrate mass on Wall Street. Already the political crossfire has begun, with conservatives assailing the pope for not understanding modern markets. One columnist condemned him as a false prophet, standing against “modernity, rationality, science and
POLITICAL
The Prophetic Voice of Pope Francis ... the spontaneous creativity of open societies.” Republicans are outraged that at Laudato Si, the Pope’s stunning encyclical addressing our relationship to God’s creation of nature and calling on us to change our ways to meet the challenge of climate change. While the Republican presidential campaign has been fixated on building walls, the pope represents the voice of Jesus that calls for caring for the stranger on the Jericho Road. While conservatives worship Adam Smith and the marketplace, the pope scorns the false idol of materialism, rejects the “magical conception of the market.” “To claim economic freedom,” he wrote in the encyclical, “while real conditions bar many people from real access to it, and while possibilities for employment continue to shrink, is to practice a doublespeak which brings politics into disrepute.” Liberals, on the other hand, shudder at the pope’s embrace of life and continued commitment to the church’s rejection of abortion. This pope has called for a “jubilee” that, among other things, offers greater forgiveness for those who have divorced or had abortions. Francis is the first pope to come from the South, from Argentina in his case. He named himself after Saint
Francis of Assisi, who, the pope noted, “lived in simplicity and in wonderful harmony with God ... (showing) us just how inseparable is the bond between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society and interior peace.” Without question, the pope’s visit will spark major political disputes, as partisans pick and choose phrases to club their opponents with. But the pope has no party. He carries the message of the Gospel, of Jesus born into poverty, who dedicated his ministry to the poor. Jesus taught us to come to the aid of the poor, to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, care for the sick and visit the prisoner. We would be judged, he taught, for “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Jesus of Nazareth ministered to the poor, and that alarmed the rich and powerful, who reacted with fear and anger. Pope Francis now offers the world a prophetic voice. We must not sacrifice people at the “altar of money” or worship the “golden calf.” He calls on us to amend our ways so we can meet the challenges of climate change, poverty, war and division. The pope is grounded in the values of the Church, the teachings of Jesus. He is not a policy wonk or a

political partisan. Personal responsibility and charity are central to his teaching. And he knows that governments, institutions and markets created by man reflect their values. If distorted, they can have perverse effects and must be reformed. In a time of extreme inequality, with millions still in absolute poverty, with growing displacement of peoples stoking hatreds and fears, with climate change a clear and already present danger, Pope Francis calls us to change, to return to core values, and build anew. His prophetic voice is badly needed in this troubled times. No doubt his message will be distorted and hijacked for partisan political purposes. But beneath that din, we should consider his words, weigh his wisdom and look into ourselves. He is summoning us to unleash our better angels. We would be wise to listen and reflect. our-year-old Reagan Reynolds gripped a play microphone Tuesday as an end of summer sun set over Stafford to lead her family and more than 100 family neighbors in pledging to the Flag of the United States. Her older sister Lacey led the Texas Pledge. Her twin brother Ronald then joined her to bring everyone to their feet and to tears in singing America’s National Anthem. Rep. Ron Reynolds stood off to the side proud of his children, his community and country. It was clear to everyone where he stands and what he values in putting his family, faith and Fort Bend, his community, state and country before and above himself in everything he does. It was Reynolds’ birthday but before he was heard from prayers of thanksgiving were made, his love of country was shared and his wife, his children and community were heard from because that is how he is as a committed Christian, son, husband, father, friend and Texas State Representative. “My commitment to my children and all the children of this community, to my wife and all the women of this community, my parents and all parents, our senior citizens,

In proclamations from his wife Dr. Jonita Reynolds and his being surrounded by Fort Bend county commissioners, justices of the peace, constables, school board trustees and city officials it was reinforced in his representing them in Austin. public safety change, and paid attention to and produced in the area’s public health and igniting private business growth. “I work hard and win for my district and for Texas on issues from de-criminalizing truancy that is supported by parents and schools and bringing body cameras to the police that are supported by law enforcement and communities, tax cuts for property owners and entrepreneurs, fairs for matching employers with employees and veterans services and events to honor those that have served and sacrificed for us to breathe free,” Reynolds said. Reynolds grew up in Fort Bend ISD schools Blue Ridge Elementary, Missouri City Middle and Willowridge High School. He earned masters and law degrees at Texas Southern University and Texas Tech University. He served as Fort Bend NAACP President and as a judge. He built small businesses. In 2008, he ran for public office and in 2010 he won to become the first African American representative from Fort Bend County. Share this story online at www. stylemagazine.com.

HoustonISD Board of Education to Consider Approval of $211 Million for 2012 Bond Program
T
he Houston Independent School District’s Board of Education in October will consider a proposal by district administrators to add $211 million in funding to the 2012 bond program, which would cover unprecedented and unanticipated inflationary construction costs. Since 2012, when Houston voters approved the district’s $1.89 billion bond program, the district has seen a nearly 40 percent increase in building costs, from about $160 per square foot in 2012 to about $222 per square foot today. Much of that spike is attributed to the region’s construction boom over the last several years, which has created a huge demand for workers and materials. Charged personally by international world leader Dr. Myles Munroe with the idea for IFLS, Deavra Daughtry, President and CEO of TWEF, holds the annual summit as a way to inspire the community and provide opportunities to network. “It (IFLS) is a gathering of leaders connecting communities and cultures with the heart and the vision to support a great cause, which is TWEF,” said Daughtry. “And they (leaders) are able to give back to our community especially our young people.” To date, the premier event of TWEF has touched the lives of more than 300,000 individuals and counting. TWEF guides people towards their purpose and destiny in life by listening to the voices of those who are now at the pinnacle of success in their chosen field. Lending their voices to this year’s conference themed “Economic Empowerment Through Diversity and Giving” will be a number of high-profiled professionals sprinkled throughout the two-day conference. Daughtry said the leaders that she has gathered for IFLS have one thing in common; they are leaders with a story. “Because it is not only the financial component of it, it is the component of individuals who have gained a level of success and notoriety. oday the majority of U.S. Hispanics consider themselves bicultural– with 55 percent identifying as a mix of both Latino and American. This is impacting the types of entertainment they watch in the home and according to Horowitz Research, it’s more about cultural relevance of programming than language. However, Spanish is still the predominant spoken language in bicultural homes, as it remains a component of family culture long after English proficiency is gained. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re making some changes to our next-generation X1 platform designed to offer bicultural Hispanics an immersive viewing experience centered on language choice and greater flexibility to discover and watch their favorite programming. First, our X1 interface is now available in both Spanish and English. This new experience lets our Latino customers find and discover their favorite programming in the language of

customers can more easily navigate the guide and find programming. We’ve also added new features and filters within the guide, including one-touch access to turn on/off the SAP feed via the video toolbar, to help viewers more easily discover Spanish-language and SAPenabled content available on Xfinity On

And just in time for the start of soccer season, we’ve significantly updated our X1 Sports app to track more soccer leagues and will soon add an “Extras” experience that allows soccer fans to follow the game and stay updated with all the latest in-depth stats and analysis right on the TV screen. Chris Bell: Well Rounded and Ready to Serve as Houston’s Next Mayor
Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor
H
ouston is the land of opportunity according to Houston mayoral candidate Chris Bell. And he has taken advantage of every opportunity afforded him. He wants to give back and help others do the same and that is just one of the reasons he wants to be mayor of Houston. “Its a city where regardless of your race, creed, color, agent of origin that if you come here with some energy and ideas no one is going to close the door on you. And that’s why its such a great place of opportunity for so many individuals including myself,” said Bell, who also boasted on Houston’s openness and diversity. Bell moved to Houston in 1988 and began a career in journalism, which evolved, into a career as a lawyer. It is his opinion that his experience as a both a journalist and lawyer is a perfect combination for one going into public service. “Journalism because it teaches you to study subjects very quickly and law because obviously it teaches you to think like a lawyer,” Bell said as he further explained the thought. “Those are strong attributes when you get into public service.” His journey into the public service sector began in 1997 on Houston City Council. He followed that by being
Chris Bell
elected to Congress in 2002. He has also made bids to be Governor of Texas and Mayor of Houston. But don’t get him confused as a “career politician.” Only seven of his adult years have been spent in the political arena, which is a lot shorter than the number of years he has spent as a journalist and lawyer. “I think if you look at my education, my background, my careers you will see someone who is very
well rounded and ready to serve,” said Bell. As the only candidate in the race with both federal and municipal experience, Bell believes that it is that experience that makes him a stand out from the pack. If successful in his bid to mayor, Houston under a Bell administration would be one that is more transparent with citizens being treated like customers. Something that he did while on city council called customer driven government. ”I am running because I want Houston to become a more modern city and that means a more responsive city and that would be my number one goal as mayor to make our city government more responsive. And we have tried to put ideas on the table during the course of this campaign that will really help us move forward to build a more responsive, transparent, and ethical government “ On day one, if elected as the
City of Houston Mayor, Bell’s top priorities will be to address the issues that Houstonians are most tired of. He has heard the many cries of citizens centered on mobility. Understanding how traffic is becoming a mental health issue, Bell has a plan to synchronized traffic lights to get people moving and filled potholes within a 48-hour period. He is a supporter of the HERO ordinance because he understands that it is not a bathroom ordinance as it has become to be known but a nondiscrimination ordinance. “Whenever there comes an issue of equality or discrimination I have always tried to be on the right side standing up for equality and against discrimination and so I support the Hero ordinance,” said Bell. Bell is also in favor of term limits for city officials. By lengthening terms to four years, he believes city officials can get more accomplished since they will be working for citizens instead of running to get elected. Chris Bell wants every citizen to reap all the benefits this city has to offer. That is his goal and his promise and why he want to be mayor of Houston. BOOK REVIEW
“Hoops to Hippos! True Stories of a Basketball Star on Safari!
eanut butter and jelly. Bacon and eggs. Rock & roll, Mario & Luigi, whip & nae nae, Batman & Robin. Some things just naturally go together; they belong in pairs. And for NBA player and author Boris Diaw, there are two things he likes to add together. Read “Hoops to Hippos” (with Kitson Jazynka), and see what they are. A long time ago, when Boris Diaw was a little boy growing up in Bordeaux, France, his mother took him and his brother to Senegal to visit the boys’ father. Neither Boris nor his brother, Marcus, had ever been to Africa and they were excited! Boris wanted more than anything to see wild animals in Africa; he bought a camera while he was traveling, and he hoped to take lots of pictures. On that trip, he saw zebras and giraffes, monkeys, hippos, birds, and warthogs. He never saw lions or tigers then – but he wasn’t done traveling! He still wanted to see the Big Cats but first, Diaw grew up to become a professional basketball player in France, then he moved to the U.S. to play for the San Antonio Spurs. After his rookie year in Texas, he returned to Senegal again, to catch wild animals with his camera. Diaw snapped pictures of hyenas and chameleons. He saw a
herd of elephants and “noticed a baby elephant standing in between the legs of his mom. He was so small!” Hiking in the bush, he saw impalas and he played a traditional African bush game. Diaw was also startled by a huge African buffalo. On later trips to Africa, Diaw saw lions and rhinos, and he steered clear of hippos and crocodiles, both of which can run quite fast. He and his group were once stalked by a pack of hungry hyenas who wanted a piece of a basketball star! While in India, Diaw learned a lot about tigers before he saw a mother tiger and her cubs in the wild. And he noted how animals and basketball players have a lot in common: it’s safer, easier, and sometimes more fun to work together as a team. In your child’s life, he’ll have many interests. One of them may become her career but in “Hoops to Hippos,” she’ll see that it’s possible to have many passions. Though, obviously, basketball is a subject that author Boris Diaw (with Kitson Jazynka) loves, wildlife and photography really are the focus of this book. In it, Diaw explains what it takes to hunt animals with his camera and, among tales of spotting creatures in their natural habitats, he also shares with young readers the thrilling adventures

Protect Vision from Digital Devices

igital communication has become an integral part of daily life. Smartphones and tablets are pocket-sized personal assistants with appointment reminders, news and a means of keeping in touch with family and friends. Living multi-screen lives may aide productivity, but eye health professionals are increasingly worried about the consequences of “digital vision.” Over the past two years, time spent with digital devices has increased 49 percent, according to data from online measurement firm comScore. Handheld devices are leading the way: time using smartphones jumped 90 percent and tablets surged 64 percent. However, some studies suggest all that time squinting at the phone may cause users to squint at everything else. Research housed through the Vision Impact Institute has shown that myopia (nearsightedness) is rapidly rising in East Asia, Europe and the United States, especially among younger people. Research is pointing to factors other than genetics, such as behavior and environ-
take breaks occasionally.
ment, as the cause of this epidemic of shortsightedness. The common denominator among these populations seems to be time spent using digital devices. While not seeing distances clearly can be frustrating, even dangerous when driving, it can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses and refractive surgery. However, high myopia has been associated with a greater risk for ocular disorders, including retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts. “We’re good about getting the annual physical and dental check-up, but often we aren’t as diligent about seeing the eye doctor once a year,” said Maureen Cavanagh, president of the Vision Impact Institute. “As we turn more and more of our daily routines over to digital devices, we need to place a greater emphasis on scheduling regular eye exams
to correct problems such as myopia and monitor for associated risks.” In addition, Cavanagh points to several small steps all digital users can take to make their devices healthier for their eyes: •Make sure the settings are adequate – increase screen font size and improve the contrast. Always use good lighting but avoid glare on small screens. •Exercise your eyes just as you exercise your body. Every few minutes, look up from the screen and focus on something in the distance. This exercise helps prevent eye strain and uses more of your ocular muscles. And don’t forget to
•Get outside. Sunshine can be the antidote to digital vision, according to some research. While the sun’s role isn’t completely understood, an Australian study showed that children who spent more time outside playing in natural light had a lower rate of myopia. In China, schools are experimenting with classrooms made of transparent materials to help stem the nation’s epidemic of shortsightedness in young people. Regardless of your age or how many digital devices you have, taking care of your eyes helps prevent vision problems and protects your overall eye health. Learn more at visionimpactinstitute.org. The Horse’s House Re-Opens in Bellaire By Yolanda Pope, Culinary Writer
I
I received quite an education on wines and liquors while I enjoyed my meal. I started with Enchiladas Saltillo served with the house style Mexican rice and beans. This dish is prepared with three chicken filled corn tortillas, topped with a special red salsa consisting of five types of peppers, Mexican cream, melted Chihuahua cheese and a roasted Serrano pepper on top. It would be an understatement to write that the food is so good; it is a work of art for the palate. Everything blended well together like the music in a symphony and Chef Carlos is the Maestro of his kitchen. For dessert I savored the vanil-
t was a sad day on January 28, 2015 when La Casa Del Caballo announced via their Facebook page that the restaurant was closed and would re-open in the spring. March and April passed quickly, so did most of our summer, yet the Mexican Steak House was still closed. However, patience is a virtue to behold, on August 31, 2015 Saltillo Mexican Kitchen emerged from construction and opened its doors in the Bellaire area. Other than the name change, some new personnel, and the address which is 5427 Bissonnet Street Suite 200 Houston, Texas; the food is even better than I remember. Owner and Head Chef Carlos Abedrop worked beside his staff on every detail of the restaurant from the décor to the dinner napkins. Additionally, he works on the grill during the lunch and dinner service three days a week to make sure that the food is prepared and served Enchillada saltillo to the satisfaction of the loyal patrons who waited for the re-opening. la ice cream cake which paired perfectly So why the name change? New Fragrance in Tribute to R&B Princess Aaliyah
X
yrena announced today that it is releasing Aaliyah by Xyrena, a fragrance tribute to the late performer, who was known as the “The Princess of R&B.” This first and only official Aaliyah fragrance was developed in close collaboration with Diane & Rashad Haughton, the singer and actress’s mother and brother. It comes 14 years after her tragic passing. By consulting with both her mother and brother, Xyrena was able craft a true aromatic tribute inspired by actual fragrances Aaliyah wore. The resulting fragrance is unisex but leans masculine, as Aaliyah favored traditional men’s scents in line with her signature, sexy tomboy image. The formula is also a hue of black, which was Aaliyah’s favorite color. Aaliyah by Xyrenahas base notes of vanilla, sandalwood, amber, and jasmine; middle notes of black pepper, violet and leather; with top notes of mint, lavender and mandarin. Aaliyah by Xyrena is available for pre-order for $64. Xyrena will donate 5% of the gross sales from the fragrance to The Aaliyah Memorial Fund. For more information, visit at Xyrena.com/Aaliyah.
