A Level Playing Field

ll of Chicago turned out to celebrate the U.S. Little League Champions, the players of Jackie Robinson West. The parade began at home plate at their field in Chicago’s South Side and extended all the way to Millennium Park in the city’s downtown. People of all color, race and religion turned out to applaud the young men who did so much to lift the spirits of a city too often scarred by violence. How could an all black team of kids from low-income families in South Chicago win a national championship? First and foremost, everyone played by the same set of rules. They competed on a level playing field. They had good coaching, and family and community support. It was their families that taught them to compete, win and lose with grace. In that con-

This inequality in fact undermines equality under the law. That is why the horror of Michael Brown’s shooting haunts every African American parent. Our children -- particularly our male children -- are at risk. African Americans are more likely to be stopped on the street. If stopped, we are more likely to be detained. If detained, we are more likely to be charged. If charged, we are more likely to do time. That’s routine, and it leads to too frequent horrors, like the shooting of Michael Brown. America has come a long way on racial divides. The election of Barack Obama as president is testament to that. The young are much more comfortable with diversity than older generations. Overt racism is no longer acceptable in most of America. But our racial stereotypes, our preconceptions, our conscious and subconscious biases still do real damage to African Americans, and to our nation. And we still do not provide a level playing field, where the rules are clear. For example, virtually every industrial nation provides more public resources to schools in low wage neighborhoods. Everyone understands that poor children need more help, not less, to overcome the shackles of their poverty. But in America, the public schools of the affluent are lavishly funded and

the schools of the poor impoverished, often lacking modern textbooks, decent schoolhouses, and full curricula. They too often are left with the worst teachers. Would this be true if the students in poor, urban schools were overwhelmingly white rather than people of color? We have no plan to revive the poor neighborhoods of our cities. Public transportation is expensive and often doesn’t link the people who need jobs with the suburbs, where the jobs increasingly are. Poor neighborhoods suffer a shortage of hospitals, of good grocery stores, of public parks and gyms. Our tax and trade policies favor moving jobs abroad to moving them into our own cities. The triumph of Jackie Robinson West gives us all delight. The horrors of Ferguson shock all of good conscience. But rather than recoil, we should move in action. Let’s provide a level playing field for all children from the start. We’ll see many more champions develop and we’ll all benefit from it. You can write to the Rev. Labor Day Starts Nine Weeks to General Election Day

merican tradition Labor Day is not only the officially last big weekend for summer fun but it historically has marked the start of fall election fireworks festivities with early voting starting in a bit more than five weeks, which is Monday, October 20th, and will last through the final day for early voting, which ends at 7 pm on Halloween evening Friday, October 31st for the November 4th 2014 General Elections. Following these races and January inaugurations Texas will for the first time in this century feature so many new elected officials acquiring its reins including a new governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, comptroller, agriculture commissioner and railroad commissioner. Gov. Rick Perry has been atop Texas government since Gov. George W. Bush was elected to President in 2000 making Perry the longest serving governor in Texas history and currently the longest serving governor in the United States. Flirting with a second run for President in 2016, Perry is spending time now in early 2016 primary states leaving Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst as acting governor while he is gone. Dewhurst himself was defeated

text, their natural talents were honed into championship caliber. Their triumph stands in stark contrast with the reality that was so harshly exposed in Ferguson, Missouri, in the shooting of Michael Brown. In America, we still do not have a level playing field. African Americans, once enslaved and unequal, are now free, but still unequal. And that pervasive inequality in fact undermines formal equality under law. Most poor people are not black, but African Americans are disproportionately poor. We suffer twice the unemployment rate as whites -- in good times as well as bad. 20 percent of children in America -- one in five -- are raised in poverty. Among African Americans, nearly 40 percent are in poverty. The median family wealth for whites in America is about $113,000 (2009 figures); for African Americans, it is $5,677. The gap has been growing over the last thirty years. Six decades after Brown v. Board of Education outlawed school segregation, our children go to schools that are increasingly segregated and unequal. Our nation is more diverse, but our communities are still mostly separate. A recent poll revealed that threefourths of white Americans admit that they have no minority friends.

in May in his re-election primary. Attorney General Greg Abbott repeatedly polls nine points or more ahead of his top opponent State Senator Wendy Davis who also trails now in fundraising with a third of the take of Abbott fundraising for his coffers. During primaries Democrats were betting for Houston State Senator Dan Patrick to win his primary for Lt. Governor hoping his more strident views on immigration, education and religion would make his race closer for State Senator Leticia Van de Putte. So far polling shows Abbott and Patrick in

tandem in their contests against Davis and Van de Putte. U.S. Senator John Cornyn is running for his third term now as Texas’ senior U.S. Senator and faces dentist David Alameel in the race that actually will top the fall ballot followed by U.S. Representative races. Throughout the U.S. every even year all 435 races for Congress are on the ballot but because of the way legislators draw districts most Congress contests are made so the incumbent wins 70 percent in the general election. Of Texas’ 36 congressional districts all are drawn to re-elec-

tion for the incumbent other than the San Antonio to El Paso area district of Texas’ 23rd district that could be won this time by either incumbent Pete Gallego or African American Will Hurd. Only 15 of 31 State Senate seats are on the fall ballot — senators serve staggered four-year terms — and only one is in play. Fort Worth’s Tarrant County is the only county in Texas that President Obama lost two years ago along with all other statewide Democrats. This is the reason tea party activist Republican Konni Burton is considered the favorite to succeed Senator Davis who may be running for governor to avoid being defeated for re-election for state senator. All 150 state house seats are on the fall ballot but the only state house in the region reaching a point of grabbing voter’s attention for its drama is Galveston’s State House District 23. Democrat Craig Eiland is retiring following 20 years in a district the President lost in 2012 along with all statewide Democrats and is expected to be a pick-up by Republican Wayne Faircloth. lum of Phillis Wheatley High School and residents of Houston’s Fifth Ward are upset at officials with Houston ISD. They feel that officials at HISD lied to them about what would happen with the school whose graduates include the late Barbara Jordan. Once the only school that African Americans could attend built in 1927 is now battered and worn down. Community supporters said they had been promised that the shell of the building would remain and the school would be repurposed. However, HISD began demolition on the school over the weekend. Many have formed a group called the Historic Wheatley/EO Smith Preservation Coalition to seek legal action to prevent HISD from destroying the school. For more information, visit houstonisd.org.

The Biology of Beating Stress

hese days, antacids are your most-efficient office assistant. Aspirin is your co-worker. Sodium bicarbonate, your best friend. And stress? It’s your roommate and constant companion. Maybe it’s the up-and-down of the economy that’s made you feel this way. Maybe it’s the uncertainty that accompanies today’s workplace or perhaps it’s a combination of all of the above, but you’re a bundle of readyto-scream. You need “The Biology of Beating Stress” by Jeanne Ricks. Your grandfather was a hard worker. Your mother is a businesswoman and you’re a Type A person, just like them. You might have their entrepreneurial genes, but genetics are not what drives stress and makes you miserable. Your environment, the people in it, and how you feel about those factors is what makes you seize up and grit your teeth in anxiety and irritation. That also causes belly fat, and it can make you physically sick. In order to start ridding your life of stress, you need to first acknowledge that you’re fed up. “Be in the moment,” says Ricks, “and not on auto-pilot.” Next, learn to use the “STOP Technique,” which requires that you tell yourself to STOP whatever you’re

doing, “absorb the scene around you,” relax, and breathe. On that note, learning to breathe properly (which Ricks says “most of us” don’t know how to do) is imperative. “The best thing about deep breathing,” she says, “is that you can do it anywhere…” Get outside and go for a walk; studies show that being outdoors eases stress. Know which foods are the healthiest for you when you’re feeling on edge. Talk to your doctor about taking nutritional supplements and digestive enzymes. Think like a cat: s-tr-e-t-c-h. and move. Write down your feelings and make an “attention list” every night, so you don’t fret about forgetting something, and can sleep better. Look for time to exercise; Ricks says all you need are 20 minutes, three times a week. Forget about perfection (“a myth”), learn to forego blame when mistakes are made, and remember that change is out of your control. Finally, learn to deal with “6 Big Ones” – the biggest anxiety-producers – by using tools for “all-purpose… jitter reduction.” And “be kind. It costs you nothing…” “The Biology of Beating Stress” might seem to fit in the newagey column. It would be less so without its cheerleader atmosphere and the

abundance of exclamation points!! but, that aside, what you’ll find here is sound advice. At issue, however, is that it’s a lot of common sense and information that’s been heard before. If, in fact, you’ve read anything about stress-reduction, you’ve read this book. Still, author Jeanne Ricks’ instructions are good reminders; they’re accessible, easy to understand, and can be implemented with littleto-no money and almost no experience in this kind of self-improvement. And there, I think, is where the appeal of this book lies: its ease-of-use means quick help if you’re tearing your hair out. And if that’s what you need now, skipping “The Biology of Beating Stress” may be a bitter pill to swallow.

People en Español Festival: Inspiring the Next Generation

owered by the Walt Disney Company, this year’s People en Español Festival held in the city of San Antonio over the Labor Day weekend has become one of the most anticipated events celebrating the Hispanic culture. San Antonio’s Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center was transformed into a free interactive daytime power experience featuring live music entertainment, youth empowerment programs, debuts to top television shows, and a series of interactive experiences for the entire family. With its mission of inspiring and uniting the Hispanic community and its celebration of culture, this year’s People en Español “Inspiring the Next Generation” theme provided an all-star line-up that included Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Maite Perroni, Don Francisco, Genesis Rodriguez, and more. Opening Ceremonies This festival’s opening ceremony was inaugurated with the National Anthem followed by the introduction of People en Español’s Publisher, Monique Manso, who graciously thanked the people of San Antonio for hosting the event for the third year in a row.

“This year we have doubled the number of free activities available compared to last year’s event,” stated Manso. Placing emphasis on the festival’s theme, “Inspiring the Next Generation”, she went on to say, “ We want to pay special attention to the coming generations, the millennials”. Also in attendance for the opening ceremonies was television host Poncho de Anda, editor of People en Español Armando Correa, and Congressman Joaquin Castro. Free Daytime Activities Disney’s interactive activities included a sing and dance along with Disney Junior’s Sofia the First, ESPN Deportes sports challenges with NFL veteran and Superbowl Champion Raul Allegre, photo ops with many famous Disney landmarks and a chance to win Disney gift cards. In addition, Radio Disney along with on-air personality Ernie D., hosted a TRYathalon, which is part of The Disney Magic of Healthy Living. The booth was definitely a highlight for the thousands of children that attended. Coca-Cola drew in massive crowds with funfilled activities and live Latin music performances. Offering refreshing ice-cold Coca-Cola beverages, families celebrated their heritage by capturing the moment of togetherness on camera and sharing on social media using the hashtag - #MomentosCoke. “We love the fact that the festival was held right at the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage month. Pop sensation Becky G and Zendaya of Disney’s “Shake It Up” were added to the festival lineup to encourage young people as well as empower them with their inspiring stories of success. Both girls were in attendance during the daytime activities; however, concert ticket holders counted down the hours to see the hottest young stars rock the stage. Screaming fans were in full force at the concert. Both Becky G. and Zendaya delivered a show stopping performance that left every young girl in the audience feeling empowered and with a sense that success can be achieved if one applies themselves and never gives up on their dreams. “Through exciting live performances, powerful conversations and focused community engagement, this year’s Festival PEOPLE en Español was a unique celebration of our heritage and a powerful

You drop your clothing, look up in the mirror and you hear your theme music come to a scratching halt like a scratch on a record and the horror music like the theme song to “Jason” or “Halloween” is buzzing through the dressing room in stereo. You gasp for air and your hands slap the sides of your thighs and there the cellulite chronicles sits with rolling hills, dimples and lumps. The fatal moment you realize, cellulite has made its new home on your thighs. Yes, this moment was me standing in a mirror back in October 2013 before I was sick and tired enough to do something about that horrify im-

age I was staring at. How many times had I made the excuses for the woman staring back at me in the mirror? And what was I going to do about getting rid of the nightmare chronicles? I was going to do my research and find out what is the world is cellulite? What Is Cellulite? Cellulite is fat cells that have bulged into the skin’s middle layer, where they pull on connective tissue to create an unattractive, dimpled skin. NOTHING can be done to get rid of cellulite or at least that’s what cosmetic companies and plastic surgeons want us to believe. But is that a myth or the truth? Lifestyle Changes That Help Get Rid of Cellulite Avoid toxins like excessive alcohol and cigarettes, which put a burden on your body’s lymphatic system. This is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health AND it helps get rid of cellulite. Avoid junk food, diet soda, processed foods, artificial colors and flavors, and saturated fats such as butter, milk/dairy products and animal fats. Limit sugar and salt, which aggravate fluid retention. Drink a lot of water up to 1 gallon a day to hydrate your body and flush out toxins. Don’t under estimate how important this step is.

Aerobic Exercise is the Most Effective Way to get Rid of Cellulite? While aerobic exercise may help diminish the appearance of cellulite simply because you are active and fit it is actually much more helpful to participate in strength training in addition to your aerobic activity. If you lift weights in addition to doing cardio workouts, you are much more likely to

lose extra weight and tone your muscles. This will give the appearance of less cellulite. What Won’t Get Rid of Cellulite? Wearing inflatable plastic shorts around the house. They just make you uncomfortable and sweaty. Getting traditional liposuction won’t get rid of cellulite. In fact, it might make the problem more noticeable. Liposuction is not the way to go if you want to get rid of cellulite. Removing fat from areas that have extra flab can change the distribution of the fat, making the skin look even

more uneven and the cellulite appear worse. Do a little goggling before you even consider going this route. Body wraps promise to reduce the diameter of your thigh by one inch by compressing the tissue. They’re a good choice for a big night out, but they don’t get rid of cellulite. Playing the victim, blaming it on genetics, or making excuses for a busy life schedule that prevents you from being aware of how to make lifestyle changes. Using detox footpads won’t get rid of your problem either. The moisture itself turns them dark and toxins don’t leave your body. Is There a “Cure” for Cellulite? While there is no way to “cure” cellulite, there are a few things that may help to lessen its appearance. The first line of defense is to loose weight and exercise-- the more muscle you have underneath the cellulite, the smoother the affected area will look. Doing weight lifting and toning exercises in addition to your regular workout will help more than aerobic exercise alone. Try adding at least 10 minutes of strength – training a few times a week to your regular cardio and work up from there. You could see visible results in a matter of months. Give yourself time to do 100% of your best efforts before you do anything you’ll regret later just from being lazy or looking for the quick fix. Tells All With New Book

ell, here we are again with one of my best friends, Kathleen Bradley aka Mrs. Parker from the Friday movie fame and one of Bob Barker’s beauties from The Price is Right. Susie Stillwell/Juicy Culture: So since we last spoke in an interview there has been a lot going on with you. I hear you are traveling the US with a book you recently finished after 7 years of writing. Kathleen Bradley: Yes, it took me 7 whole years but I am happy with the outcome. I had a June 5th release date and since then I have been traveling and book signing my book in my hometown of Girard, Ohio, and on to Cleveland, Pittsburg, and of course all over the state of California from Los Angeles to Palm Springs and Encino. SS/JC: Ok we need to get you to the Texas market with your book. What is the name of your book, by the way, so our views can go and find it? KB: It’s called Backstage at the Price is Right, Memoirs of a Barker’s Beauty. SS/JC: And in this book are you divulging any trade secrets about the show? KB: Yes, but, you’ll have to read it to

Kathleen Bradley

find out what they are, but yeah, I am telling it like it is. SS/JC: Would you call this book a tell all? KB: Haha… umm you could say that… SS/JC: Now, I do remember there being a gag order from the production. Who were they again? Was it Stu Billet Productions? KB: No girl, it was the Price is Right Production Co. and yes; there was a

gag order. SS/JC: And how did you get around it to write your book? KB: Well, when the gag order was no longer in effect, I decided it’s my life’s experience too. I’m telling it as part of my memoirs. SS/JC: Where can we buy your book Kathleen? KB: Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com and most popular bookstores and you can go on line to Kathleenbradley.tv to

www.StyleMagazine.com

buy it. And please, feel free to visit the website for more details and information. SS/JC: Ok Kathleen how much is the book? KB: I have a soft cover 1st edition that is black and white with black and white photos for $19.99. The hard cover is $26.99. The book has a fabulous amount of pictures both color and black and white. The new edition has color pictures. SS/JC: So we get to experience Ms. Parker up close and personal and in living color. Now you do have novelty items as well? KB: Yes Sis. I do and will be showing and selling those as well... SS/JC: I hear there is some really interesting reading in your book; some that Bob Barker would probably not like. Is this accurate? KB: Yes, I’m sure it is right; some things I allude to and some things were told to me by other models from the show. It’s all there in the book. Read it for yourselves.
