onald Trump’s crusade sucked all of the oxygen out of the Republican primary. His opponents, desperately gasping for air, threw verbal punches at him. He punched back harder, knocking them down one by one during the circus-like GOP debates. Meanwhile, political operatives and media pundits tried to discredit him, but like the Energizer bunny he just kept going and going until he won the nomination. The real issue, however, isn’t Trump but the Republicans supporting him. Why are they willing to follow him off the cliff of reason? What is his appeal to them? Do they really expect the brash billionaire to change things for the better in their lives? Or are they just sending a message that they’re angry? Certainly chickens are coming home to roost. While an anti-government

POLITICAL

Trump Carries the Banner for Conservatism’s ‘Anti’ Mindset attitude can be traced to our earliest history -- and later among slaveholders, opponents of Reconstruction, Jim Crow segregationists, John Birchers and resisters to civil rights in the 1960s -- it received a modern boost from President Ronald Reagan in his 1981 Inaugural Address. “Government is not the solution to our problem,” he said. “Government is the problem.” No one ever asked President Reagan how a government of, by and for the people can be the problem. Either Reagan was admitting that we don’t have a government of, by and for the people or he was saying the American people are the problem. Even before becoming president, Reagan demonstrated his antigovernment attitude and philosophy in countless commentaries and speeches. The KKK endorsed him when he launched his presidential campaign from Philadelphia, Miss., a place known for only one thing -- it is where three voting rights workers, Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney, were murdered in the name of states’ rights. Reagan may have reinvigorated this modern “anti” spirit against government, but it didn’t stop there. This spirit of negativity now manifests

itself in conservatism’s knee-jerk attitudes: anti-science (denying that human activity is contributing to global warming); anti-women (denying women choice and equality of health care); anti-immigrant (refusing to support a comprehensive pathway to citizenship in immigration reform); anti-media (repudiating anything the “liberal” media says). D o n ’t t r u s t Wa s h i n g t o n , politicians or Congress, conservatives say; they’re all crooks. Don’t trust the “experts”; they’re not like you and me -they’re elites. Don’t trust democracy; try to limit the number of “irresponsible” and “fraudulent” voters and make it more difficult to vote. Trump embraced this cynicism and quackery when he speared-headed the anti-Obama birth certificate co n t ro v ers y -- an d R e p u b l i c a n conservatives loved it. With the world becoming smaller and more interdependent, the “anti” response is, “Don’t trust anything or anybody except yourself” -- a kind of sovereign individualism that has resulted in the dumbing down of American politics, making a Donald Trump candidacy possible. Conservatives don’t run “for” things but “against” things -- civil rights, affirmative action, gay/lesbian rights,

immigrants, government. Trump’s language is divisive, ugly and meanspirited, but he’s tapping into and connecting with this angry “anti” spirit launched by a “smiling” and “optimistic” Ronald Reagan. This angry “anti” spirit has now embedded itself deeply in the spirit of a segment of the American people. The Democrats must lead a government that provides good jobs at livable wages for everyone able and willing to work; an equal high quality public educational system; affordable and high quality comprehensive health care for all Americans; affordable, safe and sanitary housing for all Americans; adequate funding for the rebuilding of our infrastructure; adequate recreational and leisure activities to add to the quality of our lives; and appropriate and effective solutions to our racial and ethnic divides. If they don’t, this “anti” spirit will continue to grow and attract other candidates more skilled than Trump. It will grow and it will destroy the American experiment and our democracy. Pennsylvania, and Michigan, each of which Democrats won the last six consecutive elections. Trump is struggling in places Republicans win consistently and that he must hold. Texas with the biggest of all boosts because of booms in minority, educated and millennial voters is unbelievably in play as well as Arizona and Georgia being the biggest surprises in all 50-states. The Texas results based on a sample of more than 5,000 people is breaking news because Texas has been a conservative GOP bastion for four full decades of Presidential Elections. Mitt

Romney won the state by 17 points. The Post-Survey Monkey Texas poll shows Clinton at 46 percent and Trump at 45 percent. The last Democrat to carry Texas statewide in any of all 29 statewide races was 20 years ago. Democrats have long claimed changing demographics would make Texas competitive in national elections but probably not for several more cycles. The question is how new math impacts local results. Texas Democrats are starting to see the light at the end of their long dark tunnel being led by the Trump Train and Trump’s ability to accelerate their long sought down-ballot success. As the Austin AmericanS t a t e s m a n n o t e s , s o m e Te x a s Republicans are taking their disdain of Trump to the polls. And instead of just voting against Trump in the general election, some say they plan to vote Democratic up and down the ballot including for Rep., DA, Sheriff, and judge. Texas Presidential Toss-up Fiercest in 40 Years

W By Burt

Levine, Political Writer

ith the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America upon us this Sunday, eyes are more and more turning to the first open race for United States President in eight years. The races at the polls are putting into focus that Texas and specifically Harris County feature the most competitive contests in the last 40 years. While Donald Trump is within striking distance in the Upper Midwest and industrial mid- Atlantic because of the exodus of manufacturing and mining employment there this decade, Hillary Clinton’s strength in many battlegrounds and some traditional Republican strongholds is giving her an electoral college advantage including Texas where a post-Labor Day poll has her in a dead heat as the first Democrat for President ahead in this state since 1976 when it was native Southerner Guv. Jimmy Carter v. incumbent Republican Jerry Ford, according to a 50-state Washington Post-Survey Monkey poll. The survey of all 50 states, the largest sample ever undertaken by The Post joined with Survey Monkey, is based on responses by more than 74,000 registered voters from Aug. 9 to Sept.

1. The individual state samples vary in size from about 550 to more than 5,000, allowing greater opportunity than typical surveys to look at different groups within the population and compare them from state to state. The poll shows Trump v. Clinton is redrawing the map. Trump’s support in the Midwest, where voters are generally older and whiter, appears stronger and offers the possibility of gains in places Democrats usually carry. He has small edges in expected battlegrounds — Ohio and Iowa — and is close in Wisconsin,

our closest friend really gets you. You never have to explain yourself when you’re together; everything said (and unsaid) is understood. There may be many years between you, but it doesn’t matter. There may be differences in background, but no worries. Nothing keeps you apart, and in the new book “Elizabeth and Michael” by Donald Bogle, that might be because you have everything in common. Almost from the moment she was born, Elizabeth Taylor’s life was “like something of a fairy tale…” She was a beautiful child who grew up to be a beautiful young woman with a mother who made it her mission to ensure that Elizabeth was a star. Sara Taylor enrolled her daughter in all the best classes and was ever on the lookout for opportunity; in 1939, that insistence on fame grew when the family moved to California. Two years later, as a result of two conversations her father had with influential Hollywood starmakers, Elizabeth, not quite ten years old, was invited to try out for Lassie Come Home. She got the part. Her mother got her wish. Though Elizabeth Taylor’s later life was filled with stardust, it wasn’t storybook-happy. She would battle various issues throughout the years; so would another star born halfway across the country at about the same time Elizabeth was dealing with the death of her second husband. Michael Jackson, the eighth of ten children, grew up in a family that didn’t have much except themselves – and his father, Joe, insisted that it remain that way: the Jackson children were often isolated, because Joe wanted fame for his singing-dancing sons and he demanded that they rehearse nearly constantly.

There was little time for anything except practice but, for Michael, practice led to stardom. It was another star, Katharine Hepburn, who was once surprised by Michael’s audacity: eager to meet the favorite actors of his childhood, he asked Hepburn to introduce him to Greta Garbo. She declined. And then Michael asked to meet Elizabeth Taylor… Right there, says author Donald Bogle, is the early beginning of a friendship that many called “flatout weird,” but that really does make sense. As Bogle shows in “Elizabeth and Michael,” few others had so much in common. If that was the only focus, though, this would be a pretty thin book. Instead, Bogle’s story moves in puddle-like circles around his subjects, and through their lives: by knowing the people who raised and influenced them, we can trace the compassion that an older Taylor possessed and we see how Jackson built his empire, detail by detail. Bogle also gives readers a vivid sense of the time in which his narrative takes place which, combined with layered anecdotes and the parallels he draws between Taylor’s and Jackson’s lives, makes for an easy, entertaining read. Certainly, this is book is a fan’s dream but it’s also one that pop culture followers will relish, too. And if that’s the kind of book you want now, then “Elizabeth and Michael” is what you need to get you. Share this story online at www.stylemagazine. com.

Some problems attributing to inmates deaths is understaffing, overcrowding, and employee retention. Overcrowding could be solved if prisoners could just afford to pay bail.

Lovell’s Food for Thought - The HDEART Consortium, The Legacy of the CRMH Continues

I

2002/2003, it was decided to not only host a Fall course, but a Summer workshop that would not only offer academic credit, but continuing education credit as well. The Health Disparities Workshop was first hosted during the summer at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center with attendees from member institutions, including both undergraduate and graduate students. Based on the initial decision of the founding institutions, it was also decided that the anchor course would, in subsequent years, rotate among three institutions in Houston, including Rice University (Fall 2003) and Texas Southern University (Fall 2004). In the Fall 2005, the course started its second rotation by returning to the University of Houston. This time the course had 81 students (69 undergraduates and 12 graduates, with the course being teleconferenced to five member institutions outside of Metropolitan Houston. This brought the total number of students taking the course to over 120. In the Fall 2006, the course returned to Rice University and was teleconferenced again to member institutions. In 2007, returned to the Texas Southern University campus, with Rice University again attending. I mentioned, this because in 2004, it was the first time Rice University students took a course on the TSU campus. In 2008, a new member joined HDEART in the Houston area, the University of Houston Downtown (UHD). It was then decided by the HDEART leadership to include UHD in the rotation. The following Fall 2009, the course returned to the University of Houston Main campus, with discussions regarding the creation of the Health Disparities Certification and the Health Referral Specialist Credentialing program. These discussions also took place with the University of Texas School of Public Health. In addition to the anchor course, starting in the Fall 2002, HDEART launched a second course, Human Genomics & Health Disparities, in the Biology Department on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. This latter course was initially teleconferenced into the Texas Medical Center to the University of Texas School of Public Health. n the Spring of 2002 the Congressionally mandated Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH) at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center brought together faculty from the University of Houston, the University of Texas School of Public Health, Prairie View A & M University, Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Texas Southern University to discuss the formation of a Health Disparities Consortium Program; later named the Health Disparities, Education, Awareness, Research & Training (HDEART) Consortium. The intent of HDEART of this meeting was to develop a program that would look at the strengths and weaknesses of each respective institution in addressing health disparities. With health disparities becoming a major area of interest, both in terms of research, but also in terms of developing educational and service programs, it was our opinion that the creation of a Consortium, based on the strengths of each, creating a joint effort would be better than each institution trying to create separate entities on their own to address health inequities. The foundation of such was based on the same institutions coming together to support the Texas Program for Society and Health to focus on health policy as a unit. However, what made this effort special and unique was the addition of Prairie View A & M University (PVAMU) and Texas Southern University (TSU); two Historically Black Universities in Houston, both with health programs (TSU with a College of Pharmacy and PVAMU with a College of Nursing). After several meetings, it was decided to initially focus on an educational program, developing a biopsychosocial course in health disparities. So in the Fall of 2002, HDEART successfully launched its inaugural anchor course: Disparities in Health in America: Working Toward Social Justice on the campus of the University of Houston Central Campus with twenty-six (26) students (21 undergraduates and five graduate students). Because of the rapid growth of HDEART institutions outside of Houston in

Harris County Health & Environmental Sciences. The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, Temple University Health System and the Patient Advocate Foundation, now numbers over 40 institutions, with the course and workshop Lovell becoming the glue that binds the Consortium, with institutional membership still being sort by other institutions across the nation. One the issues now facing HDEART and its educational efforts, is time zones. However, before that, HDEART did face a major issue around the perception generated by the retirement of Dr. Lovell A. Jones from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. That with Dr. Jones’ retirement that such would be the end of HDEART, especially with the Center for Research on Minority Health. closing its doors. However, within a matter of a few months, HDEART gained new life with its move to Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and then to Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing in the Texas Medical Center. Today HDEART’s academic home is to Texas A&M School of Public Health, with the appointment of Dr. Jones as Adjunct Professor. In addition, HDEART is now an independently registered foundation in the State of Delaware. With that, a new generation of leaders has stepped forward. Therefore, it is time to set of a list of new priorities that will hopefully lead to a reinvigorated interest by HDEART faculty and students in becoming part of the unique effort. So what is on the horizon for HDEART? Over the past decade plus, the HDEART Consortium has amassed over 1000 hours of presentations on the various topics related to health inequities, from Health Policy and Health Ethics, to Mental Health & Health Disparities to Genomics, Precision Medicine and Health Inequities to Biological Anthropology to Urban Housing to so many topics, some you might never associate with their impact on health and/ or health inequities. It is a treasure chest who’s potential beyond imagination; possibly the largest collection of presentations on health disparities/ inequities of any entity in the nation. Susie Stillwell: A Lover of Life, People and All Things Juicy

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

W

hen one life begins, another one ends. On September 2nd, Susie Stillwell welcomed her granddaughter, Macy, into the world. Two days later the world would say goodbye to Susie. She died in her sleep peacefully on September 6, 2016. She was 65 years old. The Houston Style Magazine family was dealt a shocking blow this week when we learned of the passing of our eccentric entertainment writer. She was truly a character that loved life and all the people in it. Wherever Susie was she brought life to the atmosphere. Whether she was singing on stage, performing on camera, or interviewing your favorite celebrities, Susie was always the constant entertainer and unapologetically true to herself. She never met a stranger and was always up for a good time. She first came to the Houston Style Magazine family about six years ago with her reel-to-reel entertainment articles about Juicy Culture. Ours was a unique relationship as writer and editor. I will miss our many talks where we would go toe-to-toe over her 1,000 plus word articles about punctuation, word count and content. Her goal was always to write the real story of Hollywood and bring to light all the conversations people were too afraid to have. She wanted to expose Hollywood for what it really was. This was often accomplished through the many relationships she had with her celebrity band of friends. When not telling the real Hollywood story, she was out in the community putting the common man in the spotlight and putting the Houston community on the map. “Susie Stillwell will be dearly missed by the entire staff here at Houston Style Magazine. Her kind spirit and vibrant personality was definitely one-of-a-kind and no one ever can duplicate that. Her passion for her craft of entertainment writing brought joy to many Houston Style readers for over 12 years and I am quite sure she will be missed by those loyal readers as well. On behalf of Houston Style, our heartfelt condolences and sympathy is extended to her family and friends,” stated Francis Page Jr., Houston Style Magazine Publisher. I knew Susie both as a colleague and as a friend. As much as we would push each other’s buttons when it came to editorial, she would use the same passion to ensure my welfare. Often she would call me just to make sure I was ok or that my day was going good. I could count it. Susie was just caring in that way. Someone who also knew the caring side of Susie was her best friend Kathleen Bradley-Redd. In a statement, Kathleen spoke about her heartache over Susie’s death. “My heart is broken and I am in utter disbelief and shock at the news that we have lost a great lady, our dearly beloved sister and friend Susie Stillwell. She was a leader and passionate about everything she did; family first, love of friends and her career. Susie was an electrifying performer and touched so many lives. She was exceptionally creative and forever re-inventing herself. You never knew what color hair she would wear in a given day (my favorite was the platinum blonde). She was a stand up political minded activist who made sure you took note to the trials, tribulations and injustices that plague our nation.” Bradley-Reed continued, “To say that she will be missed is an understatement; there are no words to describe how devastating this loss is to us all. There will never be another -- like my sister Susie. I am so blessed to have had many years of love and friendship with this extraordinary woman.” A native California, Susie Genette Stillwell was the third child amongst her five siblings born on November 3, 1951. Her roots in Houston were planted when she graduated from Houston ISD’s Booker. T. Washington High School. Upon graduation, she headed back to her beloved California to attend Los Angeles City College and the University of Southern California to major in music and minor in journalism, radio TV, marketing and advertising. Her career would start on the airwaves at in California at KUTE, KDAY, KTNQ and KFWB stations. After the stint on California radio, she returned to Houston to become the Music Director at KYOK. She also spent some time working at KCOH Radio Station. Wanting to spread her talent further, she returned to California to reinvent herself as an actress. A Screen Actor’s Guild member Susie worked on such shows as Fresh Prince of Bellaire, NYPD Blue, Night Court and who could forget the all-famous Star Trek, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Not too many knew of Susie’s vocal talents. She performed around the world over with her CD entitled NeferNefertiti. Queen Found? Written, produced, directed and recorded in Los Angeles by Susie Stillwell Platinum EFX Records and Song Pen Music. Her CD takes a new twist on Old School sounds, Hip Hop beats and Egyptian melodies. Houston Style Magazine’s culinary writer Yolanda Pope recalled a time when she first saw Susie perform a few years back with Andrey Seville at a club in Humble, TX. Susie was portraying Tina Turner and performing some of Tina’s greatest hits from the ‘80s. Yolanda said, ”She (Susie) sounded more like Tina Turner that Tina does. The crowd really loved her and she could move a group to dance, and we were not in a dance club. “ With every trip she made to California, Texas would call her back. Susie’s life was a constant boomerang between California and Texas. She could be seen on the stages in California just as much as she was on the stages in Texas. She had a fast pace life. And it was a life she loved. But just as fast as her life was nothing grounded her more than that of her family. Cherishing her memory are her sons - James Douglas Crump (Laurie) and John Wesley Crump (Shana); her siblings - Cheryl (Fred), Samuel (Patricia), Wilbert Richard, Michael (Tchelinda), and Anthony Lee; her grandchildren - Marley Mae Crump, Macy Crump, Jonathon Crump, Darius Crump, Deonte’ Crump, and Kaylin Crump; her great grandchild – Cameron Crump; her companion – Douglas Thompson; and a host of family and friends. Susie was preceded in death by her parents - Wilbert & Katie Stillwell.

Susie’s remains have been entrusted to the Carl Barnes Funeral Home. Her wake has been scheduled for Friday, 9/16/16 from 6pm to 9pm and the funeral is Saturday, 9/17/16 at 12:00 noon. Both services are at Carl Barnes Funeral Home, 746 W 22nd St, Houston, TX 77008. Susie’s final resting place will be at Paradise Cemetery North, 10401 W Montgomery Rd, Houston, TX 77088.

Get a Little Taste of Italy at the Newest Location of Maggiano’s By Jo-Carolyn Goode

F

inding exceptional food is not hard to do in Houston. No matter what flavor your palette craves there is a restaurant that will far exceed your expectations. When hunger yearns in your stomach and your thoughts drift to melting cheeses, savory tomato sauces, rich delectable meats look no further than that of Maggiano’s, the closest thing to eating true Italian food without traveling to Italy itself. A new location of the Italian chain recently opened in Memorial City Mall and Team Style Mag got to experience it first hand. In true Maggiano’s fashion, the third location in Houston was officially opened with the cutting of pasta ceremony. During the ceremony, where a child from Make-A-Wish did the cutting honors, Maggiano’s donated over $6,000 to the local chapter of Make-AWish. Once the pasta was cut, the doors were opened to the media and other special invited guests. Walking through the doors, I immediately noticed old blue eyes on the wall, Frank Sinatra. His portrait hangs in every Maggiano’s as a tribute to him since he was a frequent customer when he was alive. I made it a point to not eat anything that day because I knew I was in for a culinary treat and Maggiano’s did not disappoint me one bit. My lunch excursion started off with an array of appetizers of Crispy Zucchini Fritte’ with Lemon Aioli, Chopped Salad with bacon, and Bruschetta. The zucchini was fried to perfection to the point that the coating was crisp and the zucchini was not limp. The added dipping sauce of the lemon aioli was the perfect compliment to bring out the flavors even more. Fresh ingredients are what made the chopped salad a star dish. Every vegetable was crunchy and the lettuce was in full bloom. Maggiano’s has five types of Bruschetta on the menu. During my lunch, I tried the original version with tomato, balsamic and garlic. This was my first experience eating Bruschetta and it won’t be my last. The next course of entrees got me excited. Executive Chef Philippe Ve’rain really pulled out all the punches with this course serving their famous Rigatoni ‘D’, Chicken Parmesan, Grilled Salmon Lemon & Herb, and Mom’s Lasagna. As each dish was placed before me, I couldn’t stop smiling with the anticipation of the taste. The Famous Rigatoni ‘D’ is made with herb-roasted chicken, mushrooms, caramelized onions, and Marsala cream sauce. Simply delicious and I was so happy that they gifted us with a serving of this entrée to take a little bit of Italy home. One of my absolute favorite dishes was the Chicken Parmesan. It was so hard to pace myself while eating this dish. The flavors were so incredible that my tongue just danced with every bite. Most salmon that I have had usually had a fishy taste to it but not the one at Maggiano’s. Executive Chef Ve’rain said it is all in the cooking technique. I could literally taste the love that was put into Mom’s Lasagna. There was just the right amount of cheese and sauce without overpowering the meat. With all the food I have already consumed it is hard to believe that I had room for dessert but I did. On the menu were Tiramisu, New York Style Cheesecake, Chocolate Zuccotto Cake and Gigi’s Butter Cake. Yes, Maggiano’s did us like that. Chef Ve’rain has a sweet tooth and told me that of all the desserts at Maggiano’s the Tiramisu is his favorite and I know why. This is the best dessert to end with after the meal I had because although it is rich, it is a really light tasting dessert that you could eat if you are full. Plus it gave me an added energy boost since the ladyfingers in the dessert are soaked in espresso to ward off the sleep that often comes after eating a hearty meal. If you are a cheesecake fan, you will want to try Maggiano’s. It takes 12 hours to make this dessert that has three types of cheeses including sour cream, ricotta cheese, and cream cheese. I was so intimidated by the Chocolate Zuccotto Cake due to the sheer size of it. Baby this cake is just rich with flavor as it is layered with Sambuca Mousse. Need I say more! However, my favorite dessert was Gigi’s Butter Cake. It looks so assuming as it is a simple cake dusted with powdered sugar. Once you taste it though, your taste buds soar. Literally, I savor every bite so the flavors could linger as long as possible in my mouth. The cake literally melted in my mouth. The dessert is the actual recipe of a member of the leadership team of Maggiano’s grandmother that wasn’t originally supposed to be on the menu. But customer demand made it a permanent staple. I recommend not dining at Maggiano’s alone as the portions are huge. And that is on purpose. They are really big on family so their dishes are oversized because they are meant to be shared with the people you love. Also take my lead and don’t eat anything on the day you plan to dine there. You will thank me for this tip, as you will need every inch of your stomach to soak up the goodness that comes out of the kitchen. The food at Maggiano’s is so good due to Executive Chef Ve’rain. Originally from France, he has been living in the US since 2001 and has traveled the world to hone his culinary skills. He brings all of that talent to each every dish and pays particular detail to every dish that comes out of his kitchen. No dish leaves the kitchen without Chef Ve’rain’s stamp of approval of presentation and taste. If he finds anything wrong with a dish, it is thrown out to ensure the customer gets the very best. The Memorial City location is not just a great place for lunch and dinner but also a great location to celebrate. There are two private event rooms to host meetings, wedding receptions, parties or other gatherings. As you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Maggiano’s and will soon return. I implore you to make this your next culinary stop for a meal that you won’t soon forget. Find out more information at www.maggianos.com.

Funding provided to respond to Zika, quickly identify cases of adverse birth outcomes linked to Zika, coordinate with state efforts, and refer affected infants and families to services. he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded $399,608 to the Houston Health Department to establish, enhance, and maintain information-gathering systems to rapidly detect microcephaly–a serious birth defect of the brain–and other adverse outcomes linked to Zika virus infection. This funding is in addition to the $16.4 million recently awarded to states and territories for surveillance of microcephaly and other adverse outcomes and will enable these local areas to participate in these important activities in coordination with state efforts. The funds will allow these local areas to · Enhance information-gathering to carry out strategies for real-time, population-based monitoring for microcephaly and other birth defects caused by Zika virus · Enhance capacity development through partner collaboration and infrastructure improvements · Provide referral of infants and families to health and social resources · Participate in CDC data reporting · Expand access to examination of health and monitoring of developmental outcomes

As of August 26, CDC had obligated more than $193 million of the repurposed funds available for Zika preparedness, including over $110 million to support state, territorial, and local jurisdictions fight Zika. As of August 26, HHS has obligated $264 million of the $374 million redirected for the domestic Zika response. Surveillance and referral to services for infants with microcephaly or other adverse outcomes linked with the Zika virus in local areas will be supported through three complementary approaches: 1) The $16.4 million award in early August to states and territories for the surveillance of microcephaly and other adverse outcomes 2) The $2.4 million award being announced today, which will enable highly populated jurisdictions to participate in surveillance of microcephaly and other adverse outcomes in coordination with state efforts 3) CDC also recently awarded $5.5 million to support the expansion of the public health emergency response capacity at the local level to report on Zika-exposed pregnant women, their developing fetuses, pregnancy outcomes and live-born infants. Information on how to apply for support will be made available to local health departments.

I

n a letter to the Texas State Board of Education, Mayor Sylvester Turner expresses strong opposition to the adoption of the Momentum Instruction, LLC’s “Mexican American Heritage” textbook currently under consideration for the 2017 school year.
