tyle Fam, It’s time to celebrate! In 1989, The Cosby Show was the #1 hit on TV. The two most popular commercial quotes were “This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?” and “It keeps going and going and going,” made famous by the introduction of the Energizer Bunny. Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” was the #1 song in America! Driving Miss Daisy won the Oscar. 1989 was the year the Exxon Valzez spilled 30 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound. 1989 was also the year one brave man stood in front of a tank in Tiananmen Square in China as a lone protestor against government oppression. Indeed, 1989 was the year of the Bad Boys. The Detroit Pistons and the Miami Hurricanes were winning championships. 1989 was also the year I became a bad boy. I sold ads for an African American newspaper that had yet to be published. Then, I had the courage to put Scott Gertner (a local Caucasian entertainer) on my very first cover. For a minute, I was the baddest boy in Houston! The criticism I received from my own people for being an inclusionary urban weekly publication caught me off guard. However, I continued to push the envelope because I was born to be a publisher! 25 years later I am still a bad boy who is able to change with the passing tide. From floppy discs and fax machines to jump drives and putting things on the cloud, Houston Style Magazine and I have evolved with the times. We are not just local; we are global. Our contributing writers are known all over the world. We cover national topics and earth-changing issues. Our advertisers are in the upper echelon of Fortune 500 companies! Our loyal business partners are captains of their industry. On Friday, October 3, 2014, Houston Style Magazine will celebrate its silver anniversary in grand fashion at a star-studded anniversary reception at Del Frisco’s in the fabulous Galleria! The sold-out event will feature Ndaba Mandela, grandson of legendary South African leader Nelson Mandela, as the keynote speaker. Hollywood executive producer Nicole Murphy will be there making a special appearance. All-World Center Dwight Howard of the Houston Rockets who will receive the 2014 Champion of Change Award as the reigning king of Houston. We are bringing Houston’s own Tony Wyllie back home to celebrate his achievement at the highest ranking African

American PR executive in the NFL and all of sports to receive the 2014 Hometown Hero Award. In addition, Cloves C. Campbell, Jr., President and CEO of the NNPA will bring remarks. We could not have made it these past 25 years without our amazing advertisers. Corporate titans such as General Motors, Wells Fargo Bank, Macy’s, H-E-B, Wal-Mart and others will be on the front row to help us celebrate 25 successful years of bringing the world directly to Houston. Several of them will be the recipients of Houston Style Magazine’s 2014 awards - including our Legacy Award, Pinnacle Award, Heritage Award, Visionary Award, and our Triumph Award. The abundantly talented Erik Cork, Houston’s own award-winning educator known in 46 states and 5 foreign countries whom many call “The Hardest Working Man in Education,” will be the energetic host of our gala. As one of the original writers for Houston Style Magazine, Erik was one of the very first journalists granted an exclusive interview with Beyonce’ – long before she became one of the most recognizable artists and mega-selling planetary icons in the all-time history of pop culture. Yes, Houston Style Magazine was there to help launch Beyonce’ onto the universal stratosphere. Erik also represented our urban weekly publication when he interviewed Oprah Winfrey during one of her rare visits to H-Town. Local to national icons, Houston Style Magazine has always told the stories that matter most to our loyal readers. No story is never insignificant or out of our reach. Houston Style Magazine has covered coveted events as the ESPY Awards, BET Awards, Essence Festival, Black Girls Rock, Super Bowl, NBA All-Star, US Africa Leaders Summit, Congressional Black Caucus, and many others. Houston Style Magazine was given a seat at the table in Washington, DC when Barack Obama first announced he was going to run for president of the United States. My wife, Krystyn, could have become Michelle Obama’s best friend the way they were hugging each other after he was elected! And yes, our newly elected president gave some celebratory dap to yours truly! What can I say? Houston Style Magazine is here to stay. Houston Style Magazine is one of the first urban weekly publications to be selected as a partner with world news leader CNN, granting us exclusive access news breaking content and the ability to share our stories on a na-

tional platform. We are in the deep end of the technology pool that gets more than 5 million digital impressions per day. Our city has suffered major Hurricanes and other disasters during the past 25 years, yet Houston Style Magazine has been faithful to always publish the news without fail, no matter what. We have a 100% record of covering our shared calamities and offering assistance to our neighbors who are negatively impacted, just as we are. As a matter of fact, all of our original issues were washed away due to the massive devastation of Hurricane Ike. If you are still holding on to our premier 1989 issue featuring Scott Gertner on the cover, you are invited to attend our gala for free, in exchange for your historical and priceless possession. It has been my honor and privilege to serve my city and my country for the past 25 years. This has been a labor of love to take the knowledge of the publishing industry that I learned from my first teacher, my father, Francis Page, founder of Houston Newspages. Many a day I sat working beside him learning the trade. I took the seed he gave me and built upon it

to create something he never imagine. I know he is somewhere in Heaven bursting with pride. Dad, I share this celebration with you; for if it had not been for you teaching me where would I be. Friday, October 3, 2014 will be an evening Houston will never forget. If you were one of the unfortunate ones not to get the hottest ticket in town to the Houston Style Magazine 25th Anniversary Reception, Houston Style Magazine has your back. Join us at the after party at 9pm at the J. W. Marriott. If you are there, you will be among the first in Houston to witness the rollout innovations that will be announced at the end of our spectacular, celebrity-drenched gala. The best is yet to come. Keep HoustonStyle.com as one of your easyto-access favorites on your computer task bar. Join in the #Style25 fun on Twitter and Instagram, then like us on Facebook. We are looking forward to meeting you face-to-face at our 25th Anniversary Reception. Francis Page, Jr. Houston Style Magazine Publisher

Ndaba Mandela Continues Legacy Carrying Africa on His Shoulders By Gabrielle Deculus

S

haring a journey of sacrifice for peace and freedom with the world, Nelson Mandela impacted millions by empowering his people. Although he is no longer physically of this earth to continue the journey, his enduring resilience continues on as it runs through the veins of his grandson, Ndaba Mandela. Houston Style Magazine spoke with Ndaba about his grandfather’s impact and how it motivated him to continue to empower Africa, ending Afro-Pessimism. Ndaba Mandela, born to Nelson Mandela’s son Makgatho Mandela in 1982, became acquainted with his grandfather in 1990 while visiting him at the notable Victor Verster Correctional Centre as he transitioned out of incarceration. “Visiting my grandfather in prison was a great experience. I assumed it would be all concrete and cold; however, it turned out to be in what I would describe as somewhat of a palace.” According to Ndaba, the palace had cooks and drivers, and seemed a better place that the house he and

his family had resided in. “I wanted to live there. I wanted to go to prison,” he chuckled. “I never really understood what was going on.” Ndaba’s view of his grandfather from that moment was one of respect and value. Shortly after Nelson Mandela was released from prison, he made accommodations for Ndaba to move into his home in Johannesburg while his parents attended school at a local university. “He became my father, my parent, my teacher, my role model, my mentor - my everything. That is when my life Ndaba Mandela changed,” said Ndaba. As one could imagine, ence he received directly from living at the Mandela’s resi- his grandfather. “My grandfadence was strict and education ther has had the biggest impact driven. The presidency gar- on my life. He taught me to be nered much of Nelson Man- humble and most importantly, dela’s time but Ndaba focused to never boast! Never judge on the positive. He was able to people by their appearance! He also taught me to meet many world leaders and value Africa’s people.” Ndaicons such as Michael Jackson, ba stated. As he continues his Fidel Castro, Oprah Winfrey journey of empowering Afriand Lennox Lewis, to name a ca, Ndaba carries these princifew. However, he accredits his biggest perk as being the influ- ples with him today and continuously applies them to the

development of his organization, The Africa Rising Foundation. Created by Ndaba and his cousin, Kewku Mandela, The Africa Rising Foundation empowers African youth – adding value to Africa. The foundation’s vision is to develop the continent, enabling its people to be able to compete with the rest of the world. Africa Rising has constructed a Resource HUB in Ndaba’s family’s village, Qunu. Currently, there is a designated building for a library and computer centre. The goal is to offer classes to increase computer application and literacy concentrating on school children and stimulating agriculture business. Ending Afro-pessimism is another goal for Ndaba and will do so with the development of the African

Dream Media Company. “My media company will allow Africans to tell the world what is going on in Africa. We cannot allow outsiders to keep telling our story,” he said. The African Dream Media Company will also engage influential Africans across the world that work in different industries to express what their dream is for Africa. “Stop looking and talking down on Africa, stop contributing to the Afro-pessimism. Get an African friend that lives on the continent and visit them. Go see what it is really like and take ownership of Africa,” said Ndaba. Houston Style Magazine is proud to have Ndaba Mandela as the keynote speaker at the Houston Style Magazine’s 25th Anniversary Reception on October 3, 2014 at Del Frisco’s – Houston Galleria at 6pm. Dwight Howard: Exhibiting Model Behavior On and Off the Court By Bell of TotallyRandie.Com

L

ess than 1% percent of NCAA basketball players make the NBA. The percentage is even lower for high school graduates who choose to forego college to enter the NBA draft. However, Dwight D. Howard was one of the lucky ones who dreamed big and was able to see his dreams realize. He showed what persistence, hardwork, and believing in yourself could do. In 2004, the 6’11” Howard fulfill two of his childhood goals by entering the NBA draft and becoming the first round #1 draft pick overall. He was #1 for a reason. Bursting on the NBA scene, he brought new life to a struggling Orlando Magic and set some major records in his rookie year. Howard is the youngest player in the history of the NBA to average a double double in a regular season and average at least 10 rebounds in a season. He also holds the title as the youngest in NBA history to record at least 20 rebounds in a game. If that wasn’t enough Howard is the first player in NBA history out of high school to start all

82 games during his rookie season. Thus at the conclusion of his rookie year he was selected for the 2005 NBA Rookie Challenge and was picked for the All-Rookie Team. Later, he was named third run- Dwight Howard ner up to Rookie of the Year; right behind Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon. Saying Howard is one bad man on the court is such an understatement. He is a beast on the court! Now at 28 years of age and with ten years in the game Howard is one of the biggest names in the league and Houston is proud to call him our own. As the center for the Houston Rockets Howard continues to receive accolades and awards for his talent, dedication, and drive. He is a stellar example of a man who exhibits model behavior that doesn’t just stop on the court. The Atlanta native is a huge

philanthropist off the court. “I was always taught to give with an open heart. If you give with an open heart you’ll be received with a warm one. That’s something that’s stayed with me and allowed me to meet some great people through the years,” said Howard in a recent interview with Houston Style Magazine. The same year he was drafted, Howard joined forces with his parents to create the Dwight D. Howard Foundation, Inc. now called the Dwight D. and Sheryl Howard Foundation. This foundation not only host basketball camps, but more importantly

provides scholarships for students attending his alma mater (Southwest Christian Academy), provides grants to Lovell Elementary School, and Memorial Middle School in Orlando, FL. Howard has said that he wants his legacy to be “bigger and better off the court than it is on court.” Seven years after starting his first foundation, he established another one. In 2011, Howard launched The D12 Foundation, which maintains four pillars when implementing projects: 1. To promote education; 2. To sow seeds of generosity; 3. To champion leadership and inspire dreams; and 4. To inspire hope and recovery in unexpected times. “I’ve had to deal with many different challenges throughout my career. I’ve tried to learn and grow from them all

and try to offer my experiences to any one that needs a little direction or a few encouraging words,” expressed Howard. Howard’s giving spirit and love for community is the reason why Houston Style Magazine will honor him at the 25th anniversary reception on Friday, October 3rd at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse in the Galleria at 6pm. Howard will received the Champion of Change Community Award. “It’s great to receive this award. It’s always been important to me to use this platform I’ve been blessed with to help inspire people in any way I can. The city of Houston has really embraced me and I’m happy to contribute to helping this city grow any way I can,” an appreciate Howard said. Macy’s Star Quality Gives Customers the Ultimate Shopping Experience

ByJo-Carolyn Goode

R

eaching star quality means that one does not believing in short changing their customers. Their products are of superior quality made with the most premium of materials to give their customers the best of the best. It is called going above and beyond. That’s a Macy’s doe for its customers to give them the star experience every time they shop. For Rowland Hussey Macy the star symbolized success. Macy was born to be an entrepreneur and in his quest to become one he had some failed businesses early on. However in 1858 he would learned the sweetness of success when he opened R.H. Macy & Co. Located at the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York, Macy’s company was in the business of selling small, fancy dry goods. His first day opening sales total a mere $11.06 and now Macy’s has grown to be a multi-million dollar company with more than 240 locations across the U.S. That desire to always give the customer the fin-

est of everything fits perfectly with that of Houston Style Magazine. This ultimate made the partnership between Macy’s and Houston Style Magazine a no brainer. Houston Style Magazine is proud of the relationship that has developed with Macy’s over the past 12 years and looks forward to many more years. Maria Rios, Macy’s Director of Multicultural Marketing & Media Strategy, discusses the partnership with Houston Style Magazine further.

tiple demographics and Houston Style has that reach with them. Also they have been one of the first to align with our allnew channel strategy building out the digital platform and also extending their social media presence, which we plan to leverage. HSM: How has Houston Style Magazine supported Macy’s initiatives over the years? Maria Rios

Houston Style Magazine: Why is this Houston Style Magazine partnership important to Macy’s? Maria Rios: The Houston Style Magazine partnership is important to Macy’s because they were one of the first newspapers to embrace the multi platform approach to

reach our audience. They have a print product, there online, they have events and that’s really important to us. It helps us extend the reach to the customer. HSM: You buy a lot of publications. What makes Houston Style Magazine stand apart from the others?

MR: Houston Style has attended our events consistently and they have covered us like a family member. They’re an influence in the community and they have helped us get the word out about Macy’s

a small grocery store on November 29, 1905 in a small frame building that she rented for $9 a month and stocked in it with her savings of $60. In the beginning Florence managed the store alone. Once her son Howard finished his service in World War I he helped his mother. It was while as acting manager that Howard had dreams to expand the business. He failed at his first try of expansion in 1922. Four years later Howard tried again. This time he found success in Del Rio, TX. That first success was all Howard needed. From then the business grew rapidly and he official changed the name to H.E. Butt Grocery in 1935. The name was shorten to what we known today as H-E-B in 1946. Always stationed in Texas, H-E-B has been making everything better here for over 100 years. Houston Style Magazine is a proud partner of H-E-B to service the Houston community. James Harris, H-E-B’s Director of Supplier Diversity, speaks further about the relationship.

On a personal level Houston Style has been supported of my personal growth and career for over 10 years and we have been partners through the various inputs we have close to 15 years so it is nice to be working with someone who is like family. H-E-B: Meeting the Needs of Communities

-E-B is a stand out in the grocery industry for the partnerships that they formed with the communities they serve to enhance the lives of customers. The store chain is widely known for their charity of work of recognizing the needs of their customers and developing a solution to help them. This practice of meeting people’s needs is nothing something that is new to H-E-B but it is what its very foundation was built on. Although everyone knows that Howard E. Butts started the first H-E-B but not many know the inspiration behind the first store. It actually started with a need by his mother, Florence Thorton Butt. After Florence married Charles C. Butt, Sr. some years later her husband was diagnosis with tuberculosis. Medicine was as advance as it is today so not much was done to treat the illness. With her husband’s health failing and inability work, Florence was faced with trying to provide for her husband and family of five sons. So Florence opened

Wal-Mart Saving the Consumer Money for a Better Life fectly with that of Houston Style Magazine. The two companies form a working partnership three years ago. As a result, Houston Style Magazine has served as a vehicle to circulate Wal-Mart’s message of great savings to the greater Houston area with a focus on reaching the African American community. LaShica Salter-Velazquez, Wal-Mart’s Market Human Resource Manager, discusses Wal-Mart’s relationship with Houston Style Magazine further.

LaShica Salter-Velazquez

hen Wal-Mart was built in 1962 in Rogers, AR saving the consumer money was always the focus. Sam Walton’s strategy was to have a store with “the lowest prices anytime, anywhere.” Fifty-two years later the retail giant has not strayed away from their purpose. Daily they continue to offer low prices for the ultimate goal of making consumers’ lives better. From that first store that opened on July 2, 1962, to the incorporation on Octo-

ber 31, 1969, Wal-Mart has constantly evolved and now operates in three segments the Walmart U.S., the Walmart International and the Sam’s Club – to save families and business owners money. In addition, Wal-Mart has supported the community by bringing jobs wherever a store is built and donating dollars back to the community it serves. It is all part of their family-supports-family style of doing business. Making the lives of consumers better aligns per-

Houston Style Magazine: Why is the Houston Style Magazine partnership important to Wal-Mart? LaShica Salter-Velazquez: The partnership is important because we want to meet the public where they are. Houston Style Magazine caters to a very specific demographic in general but also specifically the African American community. We definitely want to make certain that we are involved at every level.

HSM: How does Wal-Mart’s initiatives support Houston Style Magazine? LSV: Our initiatives and the support of Houston Style Magazine is very important. From advertising in making certain that we get our message across saving money and living better to also being involved in the community philanthropic efforts that Houston Style Magazine supports it is all a part of our mission. HSM: From a major corporation standpoint what sets Houston Style Magazine aside from other publications? LSV: Houston Style Magazine is set apart simply for the passion that they infuse into everything. Whether its a story about an individual or a business the reporters all get

Generals Motors Always Ahead of Innovation By Jo-Carolyn Goode

I

t seems that automobiles have always been part of the American way of life. But there once was a time when horse and buggy was the normal mode of transportation. William “Billy” Durant was a leader in horse-drawn transportation. However, when he saw the public growing interest in automobiles he founded General Motors in 1908. During this time the automobile industry was still fairly new. Existing car companies were only moving a handful of vehicles per year. And some even got reputations of doing bad business of taking customers hard earned money and then going out of business before the customer got their car. Another car manufactory of the time wanted to customers to trust the industry again so he proposed consolidating several of the car manufactures. The idea cause a light bulb to go off in the head of Durant since he had made a good sum of money in a similar way in the horse-drawn transportation industry. So instead of selling customers one kind of vehicle, Durant want-

34

ed to sell a variety of vehicles. Thus GM was birthed. Earlier on GM became the parent company of the Buick Motor Company since Durant already owned it. Soon after he slowly began acquiring more companies such as Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Oakland (now known as Pontiac). Before long Chevrolet, Vauxhall and Opel were added to the expanding GM line up. It was because of engineers’ vision for design that change the way people viewed automobiles. Vehicles were not just ways to get around but they became an extension of the person’s style. Since those early years until now General Motors has always been a pioneer of innovation, design and production. Another company that has thought differently to stay abreast of the changing times is Houston Style Magazine. And for 16 years Houston Style Magazine has helped General Motors to keep fueling the American fascination with the automobile with exclusive content across multiple channels.

Jocelyn Allen, General Motors’ Director of Regional, Grassroots, and Diversity Communications, discusses the partnership with Houston Style Magazine further. Houston Style Magazine: Why is the Houston Style Magazine partnership important to General Motors? Jocelyn Allen: The relationship that General Motors and Chevrolet shares with Houston Style Magazine is really important to us. For more than a decade they have been there for us and the HSM is really the voice and the conscience of the community. So whether it was great things that we were doing like the dedication of the Martin Luther King Memorial or Black Girls Rock or the Stellar Gospel Awards they have always been there. But even in the bad times they have been there to check us when we needed to be check and be a fair and balanced voice. HSM: You buy a lot of publications. What makes Houston Style Magazine stand apart

from the others? JA: You know General Motors and Chevrolet we buy an awful lot of media whether that’s through advertising or events Jocelyn Allen but what makes the relationship with Houston Style so amazing and so wonderful is that HS is literally everywhere. Whether we are sponsoring the NAACP Image Awards or Black Girls Rock or the Stellar Gospel Awards HS is right there on the red carpet and they are making sure that people know that Chevy is apart of the community. HSM: How has Houston Style Magazine supported General Motors’ initiatives over the years? JA: Over the years HSM has been incredibly supportive of General Motors and Chevy specifically whether it was being at our events to record history or whether it was bringing voice to the different things

we were doing HS has just been amazing in their commitment to General Motors and in showing General Motors their commitment to the African American community. Wells Fargo Brings Financial Freedom to the African American Community By Jo-Carolyn Goode

A

chieving financial success is not an easy thing to accomplish. There are so many barriers in the way such as outstanding student loans, credit card debt, and living outside one’s means. Wells Fargo understands being financial strapped and their financial advisors help guide customers from that state to one of financial freedom. Founded on March 18, 1852, by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo, and associates, Wells Fargo has always been known for speedy and efficient service with great communication. Over the years Wells Fargo has remained steadfast in their efforts to get customers on the road to financial freedom as expeditiously as possible. They recognized as long as customers are crippled by financial restraints they can’t move forward, families can’t progress and the community can’t grow. Wells Fargo has a goal of pushing people, families and communities into prosperity through economic advancement. Cary Yates, Wells Fargo’s Senior Vice President,

Market Growth & Development Manager, tells why the relationship with Houston Style Magazine is so vital to their business.

ant to Wells Fargo Bank. And obviously without Houston Style Magazine we wouldn’t be where we are today so we want to thank you. HSM: You buy in and support a lot of publications, what makes Houston Style Magazine stand apart from the other publications?

Cary Yates

Houston Style Magazine: Why is Houston Style Magazine’s partnership important to Wells Fargo? Cary Yates: First of all let me say congratulations to the Houston Style Magazine on 25 years of great service. Why is Houston Style Magazine important to Wells Fargo? Basically because Houston Style Magazine helps us reach the African American community. All communities, of course, but the African American segment is very import-

CY: Wells Fargo, through our community bank, we have many sponsorships, events, and newsworthy items. Houston Style Magazine is always there with a publicist, with a photographer, and they bring a whole team of individuals that actually help Wells Fargo create the brand and the image that we want in the community, not just through print, but also through your massive email, which has helped Wells Fargo with many, many events that we have in the city and we want to thank you for that as well. HSM: How has Houston Style Magazine supported Wells Fargo’s initiatives over the last years?

CY: Over the many years Houston Style Magazine either through our project Lift, which we actually put people in housing, or through our veterans, who we dearly love so much. Wells Fargo has done many things with veterans and with housing. Currently there is a Kinsley Collection an African art collection at the Houston Museum of African American Art and Culture that I would really, really suggest everyone attend. Houston Style Magazine, here again, they were there day one. They created the brand through newsworthy items and they actually did the email for us as well. They are always there. HSM: Are there any extra comments or words you would like to add? CY: I would like to say I have known the Page family for years. I knew Francis Page Sr., who was actually one of the pioneers for this. My wife and I, Judge Yates, we were blessed to be his friend and we are also blessed by being Francis Page, Jr. and Kristyn’s friends. We want to thank that family

very, very much because it is all in who tells the story that has the interpretation in the end. Without Houston Style Magazine Huston would not be as newsworthy as it is today and as prominent with newsworthy events as we are so we want to thank the Page family. Houston Style Magazine will honor Wells Fargo as the 2014 Triumph Award honoree at the Houston Style Magazine 25th Anniversary Awards Reception on Friday, October 3rd at Del Frisco’s Steak House at 6:00pm. For more information about Wells Fargo, visit wellsfargo.com. For more information about Houston Style Magazine 25th Anniversary Awards Reception, visit stylemagazine. com/style25.
