COMMENTARY
The Case For ‘DC’ Statehood Is Clear By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
L
ast week, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 51, a bill that would make Washington, D. C., the 51st state of the union. It would finally end the denial of voting representation to its more than 700,000 residents, the majority of whom are black or brown. The bill was passed 216-208 with Democrats voting unanimously and Republicans offering not one vote. That led the media to declare the bill dead on arrival in the Senate where it could be passed by a majority but derailed by a filibuster that would require 60 votes. Republicans have announced that they are prepared to filibuster the bill and block the majority from passing it. Once more legislation guaranteeing basic civil rights is threatened by a minority employing the filibuster, the favored instrument used to block civil rights legislation and sustain segregation for decades. Only this time Republicans, once the party of Lincoln, have taken up the mantle of the plantation Democrats of the Old South. The case for DC statehood is clear. The nation was founded in protest against taxation without representation. DC residents are denied voting representation in the House and Senate. The nation is shamed by military service without representation. DC residents have fought in wars going back to the Revolutionary War and yet have no representatives to vote in favor or against those wars. America, which claims to lead democracies across the world, denies the foundation of democracy to more than 700,000 citizens in the nation’s capital. DC is not too small to be a state. It has more citizens than Vermont and Wyoming, and about as many as Alaska.
4
Those states, of course, are overwhelmingly white. DC would have the largest proportion of African Americans of any state. There are no constitutional obstacles to making DC a state. The Constitution calls for Congress to control the seat of government. The new bill defines the seat of government as including Capitol Hill, the White House, the National Mall and connecting property, drawing the state from the remaining areas. Historically, voting by DC residents - even for local officials - has been suppressed because of racism. In the 1870s, at the same time the South was beginning to suppress black votes and construct what became the American version of apartheid, Southerners in Congress moved to strip District residents of the vote for fear of blacks. This isn’t disputed. As segregationist Sen. John Tyler Morgan of Alabama explained in 1890, “In the face of this influx of negro population from the surrounding States, [Congress] found it necessary to disenfranchise every man in the District of Columbia ... in order thereby to get rid of this load of negro suffrage that was flooded in upon them. That is the true statement. History cannot be reversed. No man can misunderstand it.” Republican legislators toss out all sorts of objections to DC statehood - it’s too small, too urban, lacks manufacturing, doesn’t have a landfill. But their real objection is that it is too black and brown and likely will elect two Democratic senators and a Democratic member to the House. DC residents tend to be more affluent and better educated. You would think that they would be prime targets for Republican appeals. And they would be, except that the residents are disproportionately black and

H.R. 51 – Would make Wasington, DC our 51st State in America brown, and the modern-day Republican Party has made itself into the party of racial division. The opposition to DC is mirrored in the opposition to statehood for Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, but, as a territory, have no right to vote. They too pay taxes and serve in the military. Puerto Rico, with 3 million citizens, is even larger than the District. Most Americans support Puerto Rican statehood. But Republicans fear that, since Puerto Ricans are largely people of color, they will tend to elect Democrats. Once more racism stands in the way of democracy. In 1988, when I ran for president, I called for statehood for the District and for Puerto Rico. I also called for the U.S. to end its support for apartheid in South Africa and demand that Nelson Mandela be freed. Since then, Nelson Mandela was freed and became the leader of his country, leading a peaceful transition from apartheid. Historic

change is possible. Yet in the U.S., the citizens of the District and of Puerto Rico remain deprived of representation. And the right to vote is once more under siege across the country. This summer, the Senate will convene a hearing on DC statehood. The White House has strongly issued its support. If Republicans continue to employ the filibuster to block the vote, it is time for Democrats to suspend the filibuster, just as Republicans did to drive confirmation of their Supreme Court nominees to lifetime appointments. The tricks and traps of our segregationist past should no longer stand in the way of simple democracy for the citizens of the District of Columbia.

The Census, Redistricting and The Republican Conspiracy By Dr. John Warren – San Diego Voice & Viewpoint / www.StyleMagazine.com
F
orty years ago, those who wanted to amend the U.S. Constitution to eliminate the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, along with any other provisions that extended democracy to “we the people,” were calling for a Constitutional Convention. Today, that approach is no longer necessary since those who still want to make those stated changes have found new ways to accomplish the same old goals. Thomas Jefferson was always about “States Rights” with less Federalist (or federal government influence). Today, the Republican Party is carrying out Jefferson’s vision with three approaches: (1) Voter Suppression legislation, which is now in 43 of the 50 states and with over 500 bills pending, collectively, to make it harder to vote; (2) Former President Trump’s efforts to change the Census 2020 count by questioning whether people in households were legal; and (3) The resulting loss of Congressional seats in at least 6 states, including the one seat from California (a Blue state), and the addition of 2 seats to Texas (a Red State). Texas happens to be one of the states with a
complete Republican legislature and governor with major voter suppression legislation pending. The bottom line is that the Census determines the number of seats in the Congress per state. Since the Congress is fixed at 433 seats, seats are reallocated following the ten year census. Now the change in number of seats requires a change in how congressional districts are drawn up in each state. The drawing of those boundaries to strengthen one party’s voter influence over another is called “gerrymandering”. Where republicans control state legislatures, they will also control the appointment of the people who draw the boundaries. Such boundaries can determine the allocation of voting precincts and equipment. The whole idea is to ensure that never again do we have the kind of democratic vote among “we the people” that put President Biden in the White House. The Republican conspiracy against democracy can only work if we sleep and become inactive during this multifaceted efort. We must prepare now for 2022 by: (1) Boycotting the corporations that

Dr. John E. Warren – Publisher San Diego Voice & Viewpoint refuse to support “Black Votes Matter” and who continue funding legislators that give to those state legislators engaged in supporting voter suppression; (2) Finding candidates now that we can run and finance against the very republicans supporting and sponsoring voter suppression legislation; and (3) Watching very closely the Redistricting Commissions charged with redrawing political districts so that the votes of people of color are not weakened. We must attend Redistricting Commission meetings whether on Zoom or in person. The damage they do will last for another 10 years. “We The People” can defeat the Republican conspiracy on all fronts if we get started now and stay vigilant. It is ironic that Thomas Jefferson was the one who said, “Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.” Are you willing to pay that price?

almost $1,000,000 will be returned to the County. This is a sizeable settlement—one of the largest our office has achieved for this type of case. We will look at all angles to seek environmental justice and push these companies to follow proper preventative measures to avoid future disasters like this one,” said Menefee. “I also urge state legislators to revisit the law preventing Harris County from bringing environmental claims that affect its residents. Harris County should be allowed to pursue comprehensive actions against these polluters, and my office stands ready to do just that.”

arris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee settled a lawsuit with Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) for $900,000 in connection with the 2019 Deer Park fire. Two years ago, a fire erupted at ITC’s bulk liquid terminal when a tank containing a flammable liquid hydrocarbon mixture caught fire, eventually spreading to additional tanks. The fire created a plume over the entirety of the City of Houston before the fire was extinguished days later. The fire made national news and closed local schools and businesses. The lawsuit holds ITC accountable for the Deer Park fire, specifically for violating Harris County development regulations and discharging pollutants into the County storm water system. The Texas Attorney General’s Office is pursuing an environmental enforcement case against ITC for unlawful air emissions and water discharges without the County.

Because of a recent state law that takes away Harris County’s right to bring cases under state environmental laws where the state has already intervened, Harris County was not able to bring the claims brought by the Attorney General. The Attorney General’s lawsuit is filed in Travis County and will not be heard by a Harris County judge or jury.
Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee released the following statement:
About the Harris County Attorney’s Office Christian D. Menefee serves as the Harris County Attorney, the County’s chief civil lawyer. The Harris County Attorney’s Office is committed to protecting and proactively advocating for the interests of Harris County residents and government through the civil justice system. This settlement represents Menefee’s commitment to protect the environment by holding polluters accountable. Menefee continues to be a voice for the people, standing up for vulnerable communities and using civil actions to ensure our rights are protected and expanded.

Accountability Does Not Equal Justice Op-Ed By Harris County Comissioner Rodney Ellis / www.StyleMagazine.com
George Floyd Breonna Taylor
D
erek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who killed George Floyd, has been declared guilty. The job of this jury is done. But, the job of those who seek justice is not. While I hope that this verdict brings some peace to George Floyd’s family and loved ones, we must remember that this verdict does not bring George Floyd back. It does not bring back Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Daunte Wright, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, and countless others who have lost their lives to police violence. The verdict does not change the fact that innumerable Black and Brown lives are being systematically and needlessly destroyed on a daily basis by a broken, oppressive discriminatory criminal legal system. On the same afternoon that this verdict was being read, 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant was shot and killed by police in Columbus, Ohio. We still live in a country where Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police than white people;

in a country where the criminalization of Black and Brown communities is prioritized over community-based solutions; in a country where racial disparities are deeply rooted in every fiber of the criminal legal system. Real justice is more than one verdict. Real justice means systemic transformation to create a criminal legal system truly rooted in community health and safety, and free of racial oppression. Real justice means ending the racist and discriminatory system of mass criminalization and incarceration of communities of color. It means ceasing incarcerating people for poverty, mental health, and substance use; and making up for decades of intentional neglect by creating meaningful and effective investments in our communities’ health and safety. This verdict is an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to urgent and meaningful action. We can truly provide justice for George Floyd and honor his memory when we create a system that truly respects communities of color, makes our communities safer, and serves each individual fairly and equitably. Here in Harris County, we are committed to ending white supremacy and reimagining our criminal legal system to create a world in which Black and Brown people are safe and free. As part of these efforts, we are investing in the following programs:

ou can adopt a child, a pet, and even a highway. Angelee Moody Rhyne decided to adopt a park. One day she had a meeting with someone at the Marian Park to discuss plans for a Back-toSchool. In her mind the park would be an ideal location since at one point she frequented the park regularly. However, that was many years ago. She had no idea the state that she would find the park in today. She was just applauded at how the park had gone down. “I didn’t realize how the City had allowed this park to slip through the crack,” Rhyne said about the park that was acquired by the city of Houston in 1997. “Marian Park had been a stepchild within the City Parks & Recreation Dept.” She found it to be so disheartening that it seemed nothing had been to keep the park in condition since the city taking it over. The neighborhood park was gravely neglected. There was no new life of growth that having trees and flowers could bring. Park facilities had not been updated so people could not safely enjoy the park. The park’s community center was equipped with weight/cardo rooms, basketball court (gym), dance studio, meeting rooms, kitchen and men/women locker rooms with showers. Outside the park had a couple of half-court basketball, picnic tables, splash bad, playground, baseball/softball fields, walking/running track, soccer and football fields. All these things needed to be upgraded. Rhyne commented, “The park needed someone to adopt it, to pick up the cause and try to get more people to use it.” Rhyne knew she was the person that could get it down. She, with the help of her husband, decided to adopt the park that day. She would enlist the community and form strategic partnerships to get the park back in tiptop shape. She began by starting a Friends of Marian Park partnership for beatification efforts,

community involvement and raising funds in support of the park. Tapping the community, she was able to muster up several community partnerships to secure donations to assist with some of the much-needed upgrades. According to the Brays Oaks Management District, the Rhynes even dipped into their own pockets to contribute to the park’s “wish list,” helping subsidize needs that the City of Houston was unable to support, in addition to encouraging and paying for Little League Football practices. With all the help, Rhyne was able to make a major difference at Marian Park. These are some of the things she was able to accomplish:
1. Replace bleachers in gym 2. Planted 17 trees around the track 3. Renovate the weight room 4. Created an adopt a flower bed 5. Restriped parking lot 6. Replaced the outdoor BBQ grills 7. Painted the outdoor court backboards 8. Paint the outdoor water fountains
9. Plant wildflower in the driveway entrance to the park 10. Create volunteer opportunities for schools/students in the community 11. Partner with community HOA’s and groups to use the meeting rooms 12. Increase community usage of the park 13. Partner with Houston Police Department to patrol the park 14. Assist the community center staff with outreach in the community Brays Oaks Management District stepped in to offer matching grants that help realize Rhyne’s vision for Marian Park–funding the wildflower plantings along the park’s entrance in the summer and fall, updating the weight room, and helping promote events at the community center. Today, the park is once again a beautiful eye to behold. It is being maintained on a regular basis. “It really is an undiscovered jewel that could be more.” Rhyne said, “Other parks don’t have a community center on that much land.” “We do live here and we are going to try to make things better,” said Rhyne. She continues to watch over Marian Park. Angelee Moody Rhyne is the mother of one son, Julian, who is an advocate for social justice issues.

President Biden Picks Texas Sherriff – Ed Gonzalez Who Critized Trump-Era Policies For New ICE Director By Caroline Kelly and Geneva Sands, www.CNN.com / www.StyleMagazine.com
President Joe Biden will nominate Ed Gonzalez – who was elected Sheriff of Harris County, Texas on Nov 8th, 2016 – to serve as the new Director of ICE.
P
resident Joe Biden will nominate Harris County, Texas, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a critic of former President Donald Trump›s immigration policies, to serve as director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the White House announced Tuesday. Gonzalez, who was elected sheriff of Harris County in 2016, has a decades-long career in law enforcement, according to his biography. He criticized the Trump administration for its stances on border and emergency management
issues, and at one point withdrew his department from a controversial ICE program. “Diverting valuable law enforcement resources away from public safety threats would drive undocumented families further into the shadows & damage our community safety,” Gonzalez tweeted in 2019. «It silences witnesses & victims & world further worsen the challenges law enforcement officials face #ICEraids.» He had made those comments
amid Trump-era plans for ICE raids across the country to arrest thousands of migrant families who already had court orders to be removed. At the time, Trump repeatedly tweeted about an impending operation, a striking move given that operations are not usually announced ahead of time. The Biden administration has sought to narrow the scope of the agency›s enforcement efforts, choosing to focus resources on immigrants who pose national security, border security or public safety risks. If confirmed, Gonzalez would be the first politically appointed director in years. ICE, which is currently led by career official Tae Johnson, never had a Senate-confirmed director during the four years of the Trump administration. Gonzalez also pushed back in 2018 when Trump suggested that a main reason the US Coast Guard was so busy rescuing people during Hurricane Harvey -- which made landfall in Texas and left an estimated 30,000 people in need of temporary shelter -- was that people were watching the storm on boats. “I didn’t see anyone taking the approach that would reflect his comments,” Gonzalez told the Houston Chronicle at the time. “I’ll be sure to invite the President to ride out the next hurricane in a jon boat in Galveston Bay the next time one approaches.” At the beginning of the Trump administration, Gonzalez ended a partnership with ICE’s controversial 287(g) program, a collaboration between the federal government and state and local police officers to enforce federal immigration laws, according to Houston Chronicle reporting at the time. He told the Chronicle that it was
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – ICE was created in 2003 through a merger of the investigative and interior enforcement elements of the former U.S. Customs Service and the Immigration and Naturalization Service. ICE now has more than 20,000 law enforcement and support personnel in more than 400 offices in the United States and around the world. The ICE agency has an annual budget of approximately $8 billion, primarily devoted to three operational directorates — Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) and Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA). an “issue of resources,” not a political move, adding that his department would still cooperate with local, state and federal authorities as it always had. Gonzalez, a lifelong Houstonian, also criticized family separation, the result of the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy of prosecuting adult migrants who illegally crossed the border, which led to the separation of thousands of families. “Separating families who arrive at our border harms children and is an affront to American values. Children should not be in immigration detention, period,” Gonzalez tweeted in 2018. His Twitter feed is also full of positive affirmations and updates on the sheriff’s office. On Tuesday, he wrote, “Good Tuesday morning! You have the opportunity to help others grow and lift them up. Embrace these precious opportunities!” along with a Maya Angelou quote. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas called Gonzalez a “strong choice” for ICE director. “With a distinguished career in law enforcement and public service, Sheriff Gonzalez is well-suited to lead ICE as the agency advances our public safety and homeland security mission. I hope the Senate will swiftly confirm Sheriff Gonzalez to this critical position,” he said in a statement. Gonzalez is the 30th sheriff of Harris County, leading the largest sheriff office in Texas and the third-largest nationally, with around 5,000 employees. He was reelected to a second term in 2020. He previously served as a police officer with the Houston Police Department and served three terms on the Houston City Council.

Staycation At The Renovated Hyatt Regency Houston STAYCATIONS ARE HAUTE: A staycation, or holistay, is a period in which an individual or family stays in their city and participates in leisure activities within day trip distance of their home. By Lisa Valadez / www.StyleMagazine.com
A
s the world continues to open back up – as safely as possible – many are looking to escape the worries of last year by traveling to a destination other than home. And since many are still unsure about travel via air (…and understandably so), in-city ‘staycations’ are a cost-efficient desirable option for you to consider. Or perhaps, if you live in a neighboring city to Houston – come on over, the food and hospitality is like no other! It is well known that the hotel industry took a big hit during the pandemic, but for the Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston – a premiere destination for both business and leisure travelers – they actually took advantage of the pandemic situation with a multi-million dollar renovation project. Lucky for me, I was able to finally leave the house and spend a much-needed getaway weekend at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston. Having visited the hotel numerous times to attend various luncheons and galas, I was pleasantly surprised at the new fresh, modern look of the lobby and its’ infamous 30-story atrium. The fluidity of the new design made for a welcoming check-in. In the rooms, the newly updated color palette of blues and grays appeal to today’s modern traveler, whether for business or leisure. My corner room offered a spacious layout with stunning views of Houston’s Downtown life. I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the skyline while lounging in my plush bed and sipping on a glass of champagne. Cheers to me and the Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston! If you are wanting to perhaps host an intimate dinner party, then the Grande Suite is for you. The two-story suite, with the bedroom along with a
beautiful spa-like bathroom, being upstairs, has a formal living/dining room for all your entertainment needs. For all of those social media ‘creatives’ out there, the curved staircase in this suite makes for a great photo shoot opportunity – especially for any brides to be. Ok, so back to my mini getaway! Before dinner, I met up with a guest on the first floor at the LobbiBar, the focal point of the hotel’s atrium. Although the lobby is quite grand, the bar’s new design concept consisting of slated blonde wood canopies, an ode to Marfa installations, makes for a setting for intimate conversation while sipping on signature cocktails. The Knob Creek Fashion and the Prickly Pear Bon & Viv were a personally favorite – trust me I have great taste! And while the hotel’s signature restaurant, Shula’s Steakhouse, was not open when I visited, the LobbiBar offers lite bites for your latenight cravings. For your early morning must-have coffee and bagels, there is an on-site Einstein Brother’s Bagels that is open for business. The Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston is conveniently located near Houston’s top sports venues, including the Toyota Center and Minute Maid Park along with Discovery Green, a vibrant 12-acre park with walking trails, a dog-park, children’s playground, fountains and more. In addition, the George R Brown Convention Center is also located within walking distance the hotel’s vicinity, making the Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston – a premiere meeting hotel. So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bag and book your next staycation at Hyatt Regency Downtown Houston.

The Open House: With Realtor Falyn Davis
Client Testimony Time By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
CLIENT: Jerome Young
W
elcome back to The Open House. I want you to close your eyes and imagine just for a moment that you had a person who anticipated all of your housing needs and even most of your wants, then made it happen! Okay now open them, you just visualized what it’s like to have me as your realtor. This week I wanted to share a testimony from a client who I had the pleasure of helping relocate from Missouri to Texas. Two months ago, I was scrolling through Twitter and saw an announcement that one of my college friends – Jerome Young had accepted an offer to work at Amazon in Houston.
Full of excitement, I reached out to congratulate him on the big news and offer up my services. I knew he didn’t know too much about the city and wanted to assist him as much as I could in finding the perfect place for him to call home. After a few back-and-forth texts, Jerome and I hopped on a call, talked, laughed and searched the internet for places that fit his design style and lifestyle. You see, my desire is to not just find a place for you to sleep, but a place for you to thrive and live your best life! So, since Jerome was new to our city, we looked at places that weren’t too far from his job, but also near fun city activities, great restaurants and places to shop. After touring a few different properties and sending him videos (since he couldn’t make it to Houston prior to moving), we finally found the perfect townhome for him nestled near the ever sought out, illustrious City Centre! I truly enjoyed working with him and hearing the excitement in his voice as we solidified his new home in
his new city. Here is what he had to say about my services, “I truly can’t thank Falyn Davis enough for not only her expertise, but her genuine care for my best interest throughout my moving process. Her assertiveness in going above and to serve her clients is truly second to none. Honesty and servitude are 2-key traits I look for in someone’s character with both business and personal relationships. Falyn checks both of those boxes with flying colors and truly a gem of a connection to have as a realtor and beyond. I trust her.” There is nothing more fulfilling than knowing your character spills into your work. This experience lit a spark in me to not only work with current Texans, but future people relocating to Texas as well. Did you know that according to the US Census Bureau, millions of people have been moving to Texas? It’s been reported that Tesla CEO – Elon Musk has moved his home from California to Texas. So, if you or someone you know

100 BIPOC-Owned Small Businesses In Houston Receive $1 Million In Grants From Comcast RISE More Than 150 Others To Receive A Technology Makeover or Marketing Services
C
By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
omcast this week announced it will award $1,000,000 in grants to 100 BIPOC-owned small businesses, which includes Hispanic and Asian American owned businesses among others, in Houston. More than 150 businesses in the area will also receive technology and marketing resources. These recipients are part of nearly 2,500 entrepreneurs nationwide who have been selected as Comcast RISE awardees since November. Houston was one of five cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia, selected to award $10,000 grants to 100 local businesses from the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, for a total of $5 million across 500 businesses. Through Comcast RISE, the company also announced it will support 13,000 BIPOC-owned small businesses with monetary grants; a TV campaign, production of a TV commercial or consulting services from Effectv; or computer equipment, internet, voice or cybersecurity from Comcast Business by 2022. “COVID-19 made a tough year of 2020. As a small business, what hurt most was being deemed non-essential and having to close our doors,” said Angelus McFarlane owner of Ravlin Martial Arts, Houston, Texas “I’m extremely excited that a business, like Comcast has taken an interest to support small businesses. I believe that the technology resources from Comcast will help us, which will then bring more people back and help us grow.” In addition, Comcast RISE invests in ongoing mentorship and resources to help businesses succeed over the long-term. The program has partnered with Ureeka, an online platform for entrepreneurs, to provide grant recipients with business coaching to help build skills in company foundation, growing customers and financial stability. All Comcast RISE recipients will also have a specialized online networking community within Ureeka with access to educational resources, sources of capital, and vetted experts such as U.S. Black Chambers, National Asian Pacific Islander Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Association for Enterprise Opportunity, Walker’s Legacy and Operation Hope. “Comcast RISE represents a holistic program that can help advance BIPOC entrepreneurs. The commitment to coaching, capital and connections is critical for historically overlooked communities in achieving economic prosperity,” said Melissa Bradley, Co-founder of Ureeka. “We are humbled and excited to partner on this program.” Comcast RISE was formed in late 2020 to give BIPOC-owned small businesses, from bakeries and barber shops to childcare centers and cleaning services, the tools needed to not just survive, but thrive. The 2,500 recipients are from 422 cities across 34 state. “When we launched Comcast RISE, we knew a profound need existed in many of the communities
we serve,” said Ralph Martinez, regional senior vice president, Comcast Houston Region. “We now see firsthand how the program’s marketing and technology resources are benefiting Houston business owners, who are working to rise above 2020.We anticipate these awards will have a long-lasting, positive economic impact on these businesses and beyond.” Comcast RISE, which stands for “Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment,” is part of an expanded Diversity, Equity and Inclusion commitment that Comcast announced last summer, as well as a coordinated cross-company effort to address digital inequities through sustainable programming and investments such as Internet Essentials and Lift Zones. Eligible businesses can apply for the following: · Marketing Services: The following services from Effectv, the advertising sales division of Comcast Cable, and its creative agency, Mnemonic, are designed to help recipients
with their marketing and media campaigns, including: o Media: A linear TV media campaign to run over a 90-day period. o Creative Production: Turnkey 30-second TV commercial production, plus a media strategy consultation and a 90-day linear TV media campaign. o Consulting: Advertising and marketing consultations with local Effectv marketing, research and creative teams to gain insights on how to drive business. · Technology Makeovers: The state-of-the-art equipment and technology upgrade from Comcast Business includes computer equipment as well as internet, voice and cybersecurity services for up to a 12-month period. (Taxes and other fees may still apply for tech makeover services.) ·
Monetary Grants: As noted above, the Com-
cast RISE Investment Fund will provide $5 million in grants to 500 BIPOC-owned small businesses in five cities: Philadelphia/Chester, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit.
·
A key part of Comcast RISE is ensuring business sustainability. As such, Comcast has already invested more than $2 million in more than 20 community-based organizations and diverse chambers of commerce to provide additional support to BIPOC-owned small businesses. All small business owners can visit the Comcast RISE destination on Xfinity X1, which features aggregated small business news, resources, Comcast RISE recipient stories and more. The destination is designed to help businesses grow by empowering them through inspiration, education and entertainment. Just say “Comcast RISE” into the X1 voice remote.
