phone numbers from agents are related to those inquiries. CNN recently reported the current USSS director, James Murray, is delaying his retirement, stressing the agency's commitment to the investigations, such as the January 6 investigation. "I feel strongly about using this time to oversee and ensure our agency's continued cooperation, responsiveness, and full support with respect to ongoing Congressional and other inquiries," he said in a message to his workforce.

The agency was thrust into the center stage of the House select committee's investigation into January 6 following former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony in June during a public hearing. Hutchinson claimed then-President Donald Trump attempted to force the Secret Service to take him to the Capitol as Congress worked to certify the 2020 election results. Multiple sources told CNN it is an unusual step to provide personal cell phone numbers of Secret Service agents to investigators. CNN previously reported that the US Secret Service erased text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021. The text messages at issue may have been deleted when the agency conducted a data migration of phones that began January 27, 2021. Multiple oversight bodies, including the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General, the National Archives and the House January committee, are either investigating or requesting more information about the USSS text messages. NATIONAL: Diversifying American Media Ownership Must Become A National Priority In America
COMMENTARY
EASTERN KENTUCKY DESERVES BETTER LEADERS By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
T
he extreme weather that is savaging various parts of America hit Eastern Kentucky last week when unprecedented flash floods wiped out homes and devastated communities, taking at least 37 lives, with hundreds still missing.” The region was hit by 8 to 10 inches of rainfall in a 24-hour period, what experts called a one in a thousand-year rain event. Those who escaped now struggle to survive in high heat and humidity, with roads and bridges washed out, and food and clean water hard to find. And the region is under another flood watch as this is written. The people of Eastern Kentucky aren’t wealthy. The median household income for communities like hard-hit Jackson, Kentucky, is about half the national average. The scars from coal mining accelerate the floods. Under-resourced local governments have difficulty responding to the emergency, must less rebuilding thereafter. In the crisis, neighbor came to rescue neighbor. Reporters were stunned by the descriptions of incredible rescue missions, heroic efforts to save families, remarkable generosity and valor among those afflicted. Amid the pain and weeping, there was justified pride for the way the communities came together, with neighbors who lost everything helping others escape. And now volunteers from across Appalachia are joining in to get the mud out of buildings and sweep up the debris. Gov. Andy Beshear rushed to the region to assess damage and organize the response. President Biden declared a national emergency, opening the resources of the federal government, and came to assess the damage. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), up for re-election this fall, hasn’t bothered to make the trip. He even blasted his
A vehicle is submerged in Troublesome Creek near Dwarf, Ky., on Thursday, August 4, 2022. Flood waters devastated many communities in Eastern Kentucky last week. (TNS) challenger, Charles Booker, for joining in helping the survivors. “We don’t want to get in the way,” Paul said, from the safety of Louisville. But Sen. Paul and his ilk have been “in the way” for many years, opposing federal investment in infrastructure, and in programs to mitigate and to counter catastrophic climate change. This year, Paul even voted against the bipartisan infrastructure bill that his fellow Republican, Sen. Mitch McConnell, ended up supporting. Paul ripped the bill for investing in climate change programs, and for costing too much. “The Biden plan is not just about roads and bridges and clean water,” he said, “it’s step one of the Green New Deal.” According to McConnell’s office, the infrastructure bill that Rand Paul opposed includes $4.6 billion for Kentucky infrastructure, $438 million for repair and replacement of bridges,
$391 million for public transportation, $100 million for broadband that might help with early warning, and $418 million over five years for clean water and drinking water programs in the state. If Rand Paul had his way, none of that would be available. Rand Paul may never understand, but in Eastern Kentucky, on the ground, community leaders get the need for federal assistance. Letcher Fire Chief Wallace Bolling Jr. almost died in the floods trying to save one of his fire departments. He says the people are strong and will come back, but he understands how much has been destroyed. “Our infrastructure needs help from Washington, from Frankfort. We’re going to have to have a lot of help.” Although politicians like Rand are still in denial about climate change, scientists have no doubt that global warming is contributing to the extreme flooding. Jonathan Overpeck, an earth
and environmental sciences professor at the University of Michigan, explained that because human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels have significantly warmed the atmosphere in recent years, the atmosphere now holds more moisture than it used to. As a result, whenever rainfall occurs, it is more drastic. “This means the risk of flooding is going up dramatically over much of the planet where people live, and Kentucky is one of those places. The evidence is clear that climate change is a growing problem for Kentucky and the surrounding region – more floods like this week, and more floods when wetter tropical storms track north over the state,” Overpeck told Inside Climate News. In addition, Kentucky, he predicted, is also likely to experience more tornado risks in the future. Last December, Kentucky was struck by its deadliest tornado outbreak, which killed 80 people. The people of Eastern Kentucky deserve leaders who have the common sense and the common decency to act in their interests. That means championing the investments needed to both make communities more resilient, to modernize and strengthen bridges and water systems, and to invest in measures to combat climate change. Ideologues like Rand Paul were once an amusing curiosity. Now they are simply in the way of what needs to be done – and a clear and present danger to the people they claim to represent.

O
ur new year 2022 thus far has been a year of multiple socioeconomic and political challenges for all Americans across the nation. Yet for African-Americans and other communities of color, this year represents both challenges and opportunities from a business ownership perspective. In particular, for Black-owned media businesses there is a growing sense of resilience even in the face of continued profound racial disparities and societal inequities. The communications and media industry in America especially should be one of the leading industries that adopts the “good business” sense to embrace the values and benefits of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). This is not about charity or benevolence. Diversity is objectively good for business. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) and the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB) are working together to encourage the media and advertising industries to become more proactive and committed to diversity from the C-suites to the decision-mak-
ing managers. But more needs to be done to increase and to enhance the ownership of media businesses by African-Americans and other minorities. Economic equity in media requires equal access to investment capital, technical advances in communications infrastructure, and inclusion in other industry innovations. As increased changes in the racial demographics of the nation continue to accelerate in the United States, American media must be more representative of the growing diversity of the nation. It is noteworthy, therefore, that one of the recently announced major media mergers has Standard General, a minority-owned firm, pending regulatory reviews and approvals by the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission, acquiring TEGNA, a company owning 64 television stations around the country. Soo Kim, a successful Asian American business leader, who serves as Standard General’s founding and managing partner, emphasized “We’re open to exploring new partnership models to get
diverse viewpoints and perspectives on the air and to make sure people have the resources to do it.” We agree with this sentiment as multiracial ownership of American media businesses will continue to be viewed as a strategic forecast for the future economic wellbeing of the nation. We intend to raise our voices in support of the positive economic and social-equity consequences of diversifying American media. The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights has pointed out, “Access to the media by the broadest sector of society is crucial to ensuring that diverse viewpoints are presented to the American people, but racial and gender disparities in media ownership dating back to the beginning of the civil rights era continue to persist.” Again, overcoming these disparities should be a national media industry priority. “At a time when more people, particularly Black people, are distrustful of the media, diversity in media ownership,” the Leadership Conference argues, “has become more important
than ever for the functioning of our democracy. Diversity in ownership is part of that solution.” We agree with the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights’ position on this issue. Lastly, as our nation today prepares for the upcoming Midterm Elections in November, there are many who are predicating low overall voter turnout. Millions of dollars will be spent on Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) campaigns. Those who desire to increase GOTV among African- Americans and other communities of color will have to engage Black owned media as the “Trusted Voice” of Black America in order to increase voter turnout. Jim Winston is President and CEO of the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters (NABOB) headquartered in Washington, DC. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. is President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) headquartered in Washington, DC.

COUNTY: Harris County Attorney – Christian Menefee Announces EPA Investigation Into TCEQ Concrete Plant Permitting A Big Step In Protecting The Citizens Of Harris County

I’m glad the EPA is stepping in where the state is dropping the ball. Every resident in Harris County has the right to breathe clean air, regardless of their zip code.” The complaints submitted by the County and Lone Star Legal Aid show that the TCEQ amended its Standard Permit for Concrete Batch Plants in the fall of 2021 yet failed to add a requirement that applicants show that particulate matter and crystalline silica emissions coming out of these plants will not be harmful to human health and the environment. Additionally, the TCEQ excluded limited English proficient people in Harris County (most of whom speak Spanish) when it issued notices and collected community feedback during the public participation process for the standard permit amendment The EPA’s External Civil Rights Compliance Office will now investigate the complaints.
his week, Harris County Attorney Christian D. Menefee announced that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will investigate the Texas Commission on Environment Quality (TCEQ)’s concrete batch permitting criteria and processes under federal civil rights laws. The EPA initiated the investigation in response to complaints submitted by the Harris County Attorney’s Office and Lone Star Legal Aid under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. “The EPA stepping in and investigating Texas’s environmental agency is a big step in protecting people who live in Harris County from toxic pollution. Harris County is littered with concrete batch plants, and they’re primarily in Black and Brown communities. The
people who live by these plants, including children, can face many health risks, including respiratory illness and cancer. We must do all we can to protect them,” said Harris County Attorney Menefee. “State leaders in Austin are supposed to keep communities safe from this toxic pollution. Yet time and again we see the state pass laws that make it easier to put polluting plants in our communities. And the Texas Commission on Environment Quality does nothing to stop it.

he FBI executed a search warrant on Monday at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, as part of an investigation into the handling of presidential documents, including classified documents, that may have been brought to Florida, three people familiar with the situation say. Trump confirmed that FBI agents were at Mar-a-Lago and said “they even broke into my safe.” “My beautiful home, Mar-ALago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents,” he said in a statement Monday evening. The former President was not in Florida at the time that the search warrant was executed. The search began early Monday morning and law enforcement personnel appeared to be focused on the area of the club where Trump’s offices and personal quarters are, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Justice Department declined to comment to CNN, as did the White House. A White House official said it was not notified about the search. CNN has reached out to the FBI for comment. The CHIPS and Science Act primarily makes a major investment of over $50 billion to bolster semiconductor production in the United States. Additionally, this critical legislation to boost domestic productivity will create jobs for American workers, bolster scientific research, and increase professional opportunities in the STEM field, including for women as well as minorities who are underrepresented in the STEM workforce.” “In addition to providing more opportunities for American families, increasing semiconductor chip manufacturing in the U.S. will help minimize disruptions to the supply chain, as well as diminish the scarcity of everyday products so many of us depend on – such as cars, cell phones, and washing machines – that rely on the use of semiconductors,” Congressman Al Green

A Million Dollars Will ‘Level Up’ Thousands of Houston Area Residents Out of Digital Divide By StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
I
f you’ve ever played a popular 80’s video game, then you know about the disadvantages your character has right out of the gate. You can’t jump as high or as far, and it’s easier to lose the level and have to start all over again. But in the first few seconds, there’s usually always a chance to ‘level up’ your character. Instantly, you can jump higher and farther, run faster and if you encounter an enemy, you still have another chance at winning the level. There are thousands of Houston area residents who — from a digital perspective — aren’t ‘leveled up” and therefore struggle to participate in the digital economy. Some Houstonians still don’t know how to surf the web, write emails or create a resume. Others don’t even have a reliable and fast internet connection in their homes. The digital divide is still big. According to the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau’s American Communities Survey, one in ten households, or 687,086 households, in the greater Houston area do not have an internet subscription or do not have a computer. They want to ‘level up’, and they are about to get it. Comcast, the Houston area’s largest internet service provider, is giving more than one million dollars this year to local organizations that help
10
students, adults and people with disabilities ‘level up’ their computer, career development and tech education skills. The million-dollar investment will also support ongoing efforts to build awareness about low-cost or no-cost connectivity programs like Internet Essentials and the federal government’s Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). “These investments are a part of Comcast’s ongoing efforts to make a real difference in southeast Texas by giving families an opportunity to thrive in this digital age,” Ralph Martinez, Comcast Houston’s Regional Senior Vice President, said. “The Internet is where life happens. It allows students to expand their educational aspirations and it empowers parents to explore better job openings so they can ultimately deliver a better quality of life for their families.” So far, Comcast has given grants to eight Houston area organizations. More announcements will be made later this year. United Way | Funding will be used to provide tech experts (Digital Navigators) to help people in need of digital skills training. BakerRipley | Funding will support computer skills, software, email and internet safety training for low-income adults in the Houston area. Comp-U-Dopt | Funding will support students participating in Early Adopters, STEAM Team and Learn2Earn, which brings technology education to area youth. of digital skills training. Easter Seals of Greater Houston | Funding will support the development of a curriculum for people with disabilities to help them successfully learn to use digital technology to gain and maintain employment The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston | Funding will help high school students gain technical and leadership skills through the Workforce Readiness Program. AAMA | Funding will be used to purchase technology and equipment to support students through the training program at the Work and Learn Center, with an emphasis on digital literacy and design. Dress for Success | Funding will be used to provide Houston-area women with the resources needed to obtain long-term employment through access to job readiness training, digital skills workshops, computers and mobile labs. AVANCE-Houston | Funding will support adult literacy program and continue to build pathways to economic mobility for families in the community. “We are passionate about doing our part to help close the digital divide and committed to helping establish a more equitable foundation for learning, working and succeeding,” Martinez said. Comcast remains steadfast in its efforts to connect people to moments that matter, to connect families to opportunities in Southeast Texas. For more than a decade, the company has offered Internet Essentials to help low-income Americans access reliable, high-speed internet. Comcast is now a proud champion of the federal government’s new Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP gives qualifying households up to $30 towards their monthly internet bill. With ACP, Comcast’s Internet Essentials internet service is free. As more Houston area residents get the ‘level up’ they need, just like in their gameplay, they will have more chances to keep advancing—better jobs, better education, innovation, opportunities and yes, more fun and better gaming.

ields of Vision is an immersive sound and light show featuring the oral recordings, ancestral DNA maps, and portraits of a group of inspirational change-makers from across the globe – who focus on the themes of Freedom, Service, and Community. Created by British Artist Marcus Lyon in collaboration with Studio Sutherland, Fields of Vision is an immersive projection piece. Initially made in collaboration with St Martinin-the-Fields, the entire façade of the historic church was the canvas for the half-hour projection that explores concepts of freedom, service, and community in our modern world through oral histories, large-scale portraits, and ancestral DNA mapping. The installation features a soundscape by Brian Eno and narratives of 28 extraordinary individuals. The work aims to “tell a deeper story of our interdependence and the extraordinary power of collaboration.” For the Houston iteration, FotoFest is presenting the immersive video projection on the façade of the iconic rice silos located in Art District Houston. The video project is an extension of Lyon’s renowned Human Atlas project which holds a mirror up to society and encourages viewers to question their own roles and responsibilities to their communities, cities, and fellow human beings. BEYONCÉ'S RENAISSANCE TOP CHARTS AROUND THE WORLD #1 DEBUT ON THE BILLBOARD TOP 200 H SEVENTH #1 ALBUM DEBUT H ONLY WOMAN TO HAVE ALL HER ALBUMS DEBUT #1 By StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
B
eyoncé’s critically acclaimed seventh studio album RENAISSANCE has topped charts around the world and has accomplished an array of streaming records. The new album debuted at #1 in the US on the Billboard Top 200 as the year’s biggest debut by a woman with 332,000 units in total. It is her seventh #1 debut on the album chart, the only woman to have all her albums debut at #1. Rolling Stone recently named Beyoncé “the world’s greatest living entertainer.” The album also entered at #1 in the UK, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, South Africa, and Brazil. RENAISSANCE became the most-streamed album on Spotify in a single day by a female artist in 2022. “Break My Soul,” the album’s first single, hits #1 on Billboard Hot 100. With “Break My Soul,” Beyoncé joins Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson as the third artist in history to have 20 top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist and 10 on the chart as a member of a group. RENAISSANCE has been the most anticipated album of the year as Beyoncé shifted gears and notified her fans of new music on June 15 through an update in her bio on her social handles,

RENAISSANCE “act i RENAISSANCE July 29.” She continued the unconventional rollout with the release of “Break My Soul,” which arrived at Midnight on the summer solstice. Instantly addicting with a pulsating beat, with lyrics that urge listeners to claim joy and to “release the
wiggle.” The single, a worldwide hit, has been called the song of the summer and an anthem for this generation. Packed with rousing anthems that resonate with everybody, RENAISSANCE is a culmination of freedom and escape that encourages unimaginable jubilation, agency, and movement with abandon. The singular intent of RENAISSANCE, a reinvention of four on the floor, is to showcase music that stirs you from the soul and encourages your dancing feet. It is a celebration of a club era when anyone who felt like an outsider sought each other and formed a community of freedom-seekers to express themselves creatively through the rhythm, which we still celebrate today. Welcome to CLUB RENAISSANCE. The magic of RENAISSANCE is also in Beyoncé’s soaring vocals, rich, soulful, at times vulnerable and laden with passion and purpose in what could only be described as “SANGING.” And it expands over memorable lyrics that are bold, heartened, urgent and categorically timely.

SPORTS: SERENA WILLIAMS ANNOUNCES SHE WILL 'EVOLVE AWAY FROM TENNIS' AFTER UPCOMING US OPEN Says Farewell To Tennis On Her Own Terms, As Seen In VOGUE By Ben Morse of CNN.com – StyleMagazine.com • Photos By Luis Alberto Rodriguez, Vogue, September 2022
S
erena Williams has announced that she will “evolve away from tennis” after this year’s US Open to focus on “other things that are important to me.” In an article in Vogue, the 23time grand slam winner said that, although she will try to win at the US Open, it is time for her to move “in a different direction.” “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction,” Williams posted on Instagram with a picture of herself on the
cover of Vogue with the title: ‘Serena’s Farewell...I’m terrible at goodbyes.’ “That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.” The announcement comes a day after the 40-year-old won her first singles match in 430 days. She played her first singles
match in over a year at Wimbledon in June, losing to France’s Harmony Tan. Afterwards, she hinted that she could play on home soil at the US Open, which begins August 29. However, in the article, Williams said: “I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is
evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.” She continued: “Unfortunately I wasn’t ready to win Wimbledon this year. And I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York. But I’m going to try.” Since losing her professional debut in September 1995, Williams has become the most dominant force in women’s tennis in the last 30 years. Together with her old sister Venus, the Williams sisters transformed the sport, making a regular habit of winning

grand slams in both singles and doubles tennis. At the time of writing, Serena has won 73 career singles titles, 23 doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles which includes 39 grand slam titles -- 23 singles titles, 14 doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles. She is one singles grand slam title behind the all-time record held by Australian Margaret Court. When asked by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour earlier this year if she still wanted to beat Court’s record, she replied: “I should have had it, really, I

should -- I’ve had many opportunities to have it. But I’m not giving up, to answer your question.” She addressed this later in Vogue, saying: “I know there’s a fan fantasy that I might have tied Margaret that day in London, then maybe beat her record in New York, and then at the trophy ceremony say, ‘See ya!’ I get that. It’s a good fantasy. But I’m not looking for some ceremonial, final on-court moment. I’m terrible at goodbyes, the world’s worst.” The four-time Olympic gold
medalist has won over $94.5 million in career prize money, more than any other female athlete. Away from the court, Williams announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in 2016, giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. And focusing on her young family, as well as her interests away from tennis, is why she’s deciding to step away from the game she has changed forever. “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a
family. I don’t think it’s fair,” Williams explained. “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. “Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity. Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia. I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital -- although things got super complicated on the other side. And I almost did do the impossible: A lot of people don’t realize that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017. But I’m turning 41 this month, and something’s got to give.” The star also admitted she doesn’t like to think about her legacy. “I get asked about it a lot, and I never know exactly what to say. But I’d like to think that thanks to opportunities afforded to me, women athletes feel that they can be themselves on the court. They can play with aggression and pump their fists. They can be strong yet beautiful. They can wear what they want and say what they want and kick butt and be proud of it all. “Over the years, I hope that people come to think of me as symbolizing something bigger than tennis.” CNN’s Amy Woodyatt contributed to this report.

ART: FOTOFEST Biennial 2022: African Cosmologies Redux September 24 – November 6, 2022

By Kathy Coleman, ARTS Editor – StyleMagazine.com • Newswire
frican Cosmologies: Redux is an adaptation of the postponed FotoFest Biennial 2020 exhibition, African Cosmologies: Photography, Time, and the Other, featuring artists included in the original iteration of that exhibition and complemented by a series of programs. Curated by Mark Sealy, Director of the renowned London-based photographic art institution Autograph ABP, African Cosmologies: Redux is a large-scale group exhibition that examines the complex relationships between contemporary life in Africa, the African diaspora, and global histories of colonialism, photography, and rights and representation. The exhibition considers the history of photography as one closely tied to a colonial project and Western image production, highlighting artists who confront and challenge this shortsighted, albeit canonized lineage. Taking its cues from John Coltrane’s avant-garde jazz oeuvre, wherein formal modernisms of the past are made complex by radical imagination and black- futurity, this presentation of diverse ideas, artistic approaches, and material histories proposes a “cosmological exploration” of Africa and the

African diaspora— one that defies easy categorization and spatial and temporal boundaries. Succinctly, it explores the very notions of Africa and Africanness beyond traditional geographic and historical lines. The artists featured in African Cosmologies: Redux turn an eye to social, cultural, and political conditions that inform and influence concepts of representation as they pertain to image production and circulation within Africa
and beyond. These artists question the ways in which subjectivity is constructed and deconstructed by the camera, and in the process, reveal legacies of resistance by those who defy traditional ideas of sexual, racial, gender-based, and other marginalized identities. African Cosmologies: Redux is presented in venues city-wide including at Spring Street Studios at Sawyer Yards, The Alta Arts, the Houston Museum of African American Culture, and the Menil Collection.
