Al Green Hosts 3rd Annual Slavery Remembrance Day Program and Legislative Update: “WE ARE THE DREAM AND HOPE OF THE ENSLAVED”

Mark your calendars for a profound and historic event on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 10:00am, as Congressman Al Green leads the nation in the 3rd Annual National Slavery Remembrance Day Program and Legislative Update. This significant event is dedicated to ensuring that the dark legacy of slavery is never forgotten and, more importantly, never repeated. This year’s theme, “We Are The Dream and Hope of the Enslaved,” echoes the enduring spirit and resilience of those who were bound by the chains of slavery yet dreamed of freedom.

Event Highlights and Special Guests

The event, set to take place at the SHAPE Community Center at 3815 Live Oak, Houston, Texas 77004, will be graced by notable figures along with prominent clergy, public officials, and civic organizations. Together with Congressman Green, they will sign a proclamation to honor the memory of those who suffered under slavery. This proclamation not only serves as a tribute but also codifies a pledge to educate future generations about the atrocities of slavery and to foster social justice

and equality.

Al Green Hosts 3rd Annual Slavery Remembrance Day

THE IRA IS STILL OUR BIGGEST STEP TOWARD A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN

Ioften think about a factory hallway in Dalton, Georgia that is filled with pictures drawn by children. It is a reminder of what can be, what will be, thanks to the historic Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which celebrates its second anniversary this month.

The drawings capture how these children see their parents who work at this solar manufacturing plant. There are pictures of beautiful sunny days, of the earth with pristine water. Of their parents saving the world. These children see their parents as superheroes. As I remember these pictures, I wonder: how can anyone not be inspired by these children to fight every day for a better, livable future? For more clean energy jobs, in big cities and rural communities across the country, that will power our economy – and our homes – for generations to come?

Around this anniversary, the news has been filled with reflection on what the IRA has achieved and what still needs to be done. It is – as it should be – a major focal point at the Democratic National Convention happening now in Chicago.

You do not have to look hard to find examples of its success. More than 334,000 new clean energy jobs have been created across the country. More than 3 million U.S. households have collectively saved over $8 billion on upgrades that will save them money and make their homes more energy efficient. In Illinois alone, for example, nearly 140,000 residents claimed more than $260 million in tax credits on their 2023 tax returns for installing solar or making other energy efficiency improvements on their homes.

One fact should loom larger than most: the IRA is still this nation’s biggest single step ever toward securing a healthy and livable planet for all. No other single piece of legislation has done more to address our climate goals and support the clean energy revolution

already underway. Through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program, the IRA is projected to reduce greenhouse gas pollution by as much as 971 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050. That’s equivalent to the emissions from about 5 million homes’ energy use every year for more than 25 years.

Need a reminder of the urgency and necessity of this investment in combating the climate crisis? Just turn on the news. Or step outside. We are experiencing the hottest summer on record … in the hottest year on record. Supercharged storms and wildfires from all that heat are impacting more and more Americans. Hurricane Ernesto is just the latest storm to batter homes and businesses and leave hundreds of thousands of Americans without power. With so many people hurting and at risk, the IRA remains one of our most powerful tools to mitigate climate change’s harm. We must continue to learn from our experience implementing it, fill gaps where we see them, and double down on our efforts to protect people, places and the planet we call home. And

we must remember that throwing everything we have at combating the climate crisis is also the way America wins in the next economy.

In the decades since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the shipping of U.S. jobs overseas has helped destroy towns and cities across America. Now, the IRA is fueling a manufacturing rebirth that is creating good-paying jobs while bringing our energy economy into the 21st century.

Plans to build a new solar cell factory near Minneapolis, Minnesota are currently underway. This factory will create more clean energy jobs in the Midwest while addressing the need for more American-made solar cells. The solar company Heliene, which co-owns the project, publicly credits the IRA’s tax credits for inspiring its decision to invest in U.S. solar manufacturing.

Just an hour drive away from Minneapolis is the town of Becker. It is the home to one of the largest coal-burning power plants in the country. Yet Becker will soon be known for something else:

being a national leader in the transition to clean, renewable energy. Xcel Energy is fully retiring the Sherco coal-burning power plant by 2030. Literally within eyesight of the old plant, they are building what will become the fifth largest solar project in the United States. Taking advantage of new and extended tax credits and grant programs, the Sherco solar and energy storage facility will bring 1.8 million solar panels online in 2026. It will employ hundreds of workers – many of them moving over from the coal plant –and power more than 150,000 Midwest homes each year.

The IRA was always designed to set us up for long-term economic success. Part of how it achieves this is by putting money back into Americans’ pockets and ensuring that no community is left out of the transition to cleaner, safer, and more affordable clean energy. Tax credits and rebates are lowering the cost of home improvements and electric vehicles that themselves will save consumers money. The Solar For All program is awarding $7 billion to projects across the country that will help over 900,000 low-income households benefit from solar energy. We owe it to ourselves and to our kids to build on this momentum. On this IRA anniversary, I think of those children in Dalton and children in communities big and small across the country. I am excited for all the pictures to come if we get this right.

n the murky waters of American politics, one name continues to cast a long, controversial shadow: Donald J. Trump. For some, he remains a symbol of a defiant, anti-establishment stance, while for others, he embodies a threat to the very fabric of American democracy. As he inches closer to another potential run for the presidency, we are compelled to ask: Will we allow this vindictive, vile villain to once again violate the voters’ vision of America?

Trump's Reign of Chaos: A Retrospective

Donald Trump’s tenure as the 45th President was nothing short of chaotic. From his incendiary tweets to his divisive policies, Trump's approach to governance was often more akin to that of a reality TV show host than a leader of the free world. His administration was marked by an unyielding disdain for the truth, a relentless assault on democratic norms, and an unbridled commitment to personal vendettas.

The border wall, the Muslim ban, and the dismantling of environmental protections were just the tip of the iceberg. Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, showcased a level of negligence that cost countless American lives. His refusal to heed scientific advice and his penchant for promoting unproven treatments reflected a dangerous disregard for public health.

VISION OF AMERICA AGAIN?

Moreover, Trump’s post-presidency has been no less troubling. His persistent claims of a stolen 2020 election, despite overwhelming evidence to the con-

trary, have not only fueled insurrectionist sentiments but have also eroded trust in our electoral system. His actions on January 6th, 2021, when a violent mob of his sup-

porters stormed the Capitol, will forever be a dark stain on American history.

The Voter Vision: A Blueprint for Progress

The 2020 election was a clear repudiation of Trump’s divisive rhetoric and policies. Voters across the nation, including right here in Houston, made their voices heard, demanding a return to decency, truth, and unity. The election of Joe Biden was not just a victory for the Democratic Party; it was a victory for the vision of an America that is inclusive, just, and forward-looking.

This vision is one that prioritizes the needs of all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or socioeconomic status. It is a vision that values science and expertise, that seeks to address the existential threat of climate change, and that understands the importance of global cooperation. This is the vision that Trump threatens to upend with his return to the political arena.

Union Pacific, Kroger, and Bread of Life Rally with the City of Houston for Hurricane Beryl Relief: A Community United

In a powerful display of unity and resilience, over 50 of Houston’s most prominent business and civic leaders gathered at City Hall’s Legacy Room last Friday. The occasion? To celebrate and amplify the “Fill the Fridge” initiative—a crucial relief effort aimed at helping Houston families recover from the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

Mayor Pro-Tem Martha CastexTatum stood before the packed room, her voice resonating with hope and gratitude as she announced a significant donation from Union Pacific Railroad. The company, with deep roots in the Houston community and a workforce of 1,600 local employees, stepped up with a generous $75,000 contribution in the form of Kroger gift cards. This much-needed assistance will directly benefit 1,000 Houston families who lost perishable food during the power outages

that followed the storm.

“Hurricane Beryl tested our community, but it also revealed our true strength and spirit,” Mayor Pro-Tem Castex-Tatum remarked. “Thanks to Union Pacific, Kroger, and Bread of Life, we can ensure that our neighbors have the means to restock their fridges and get back on their feet.”

Hurricane Beryl, which left over 2 million residents without power, forced many to discard spoiled food—often for the second or third time this summer. For those already burdened with the costs of hotel stays, hot meals, and home repairs, the prospect of refilling an empty fridge felt overwhelming.

But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Jourdan Scruggs, Kroger’s Communications Manager, echoed this sentiment with pride. “Just like residents, Kroger is

Houston Strong,” she affirmed. “We are honored to play a valuable role in both the preparedness and recovery efforts in the region. Our stores, which briefly went offline, are now fully operational, and our shelves are stocked to meet the community’s needs.”

Kroger not only provided grocery discounts to help residents restock their fridges but also offered their pharmacy locations as cooling centers during the height of the crisis. In collaboration with Mayor Whitmire’s and Judge Hidalgo’s offices, they extended critical community assistance when it was needed most.

The distribution of Kroger gift cards, sponsored by Union Pacific, was carefully coordinated through Bread of Life, Inc., an organization led by the compassionate Reverend Rudy Rasmus. Each district council member received these gift cards to distribute within their respective

In a world where music is the heartbeat of public events, it's no surprise that political campaigns often rely on powerful songs to amplify their messages. However, not all artists are thrilled when their melodies become the backdrop to controversial figures, especially when it comes to Donald Trump's rallies. The former president’s events have been marked by the persistent use of iconic tracks, much to the chagrin of the musicians behind them.

From the soaring ballads of Celine Dion to the gritty rock anthems of Bruce Springsteen, many artists have publicly objected to Trump’s use of their music, turning the issue into a crescendo of legal and public relations battles. Dion’s team was quick to respond when a video of her performing "My Heart Will Go On" was used at a Trump rally in Bozeman, Montana, stating unequivocally that the use was unauthorized. "…And really, THAT song?” her team quipped on social media, underscoring their disapproval with a touch of irony that resonated with many.

But Dion is far from alone in her objections. The list of artists who have rebuked Trump reads like a who's who of the music industry. Ahead of the 2020 election, legends like Bruce Springsteen,

objected to their music being used in a context that starkly contrasts with the values they once championed. The estate of Leonard Cohen, another luminary whose music was used without permission, voiced similar concerns.

The legal side of this saga is as intricate as the melodies at its center. Artists have some recourse when their music is used without their blessing, though the process isn’t always straightforward. Performing rights organizations like ASCAP

and BMI require political campaigns to obtain licenses for the use of songs from their catalogs. However, even with these licenses, artists can request that their music be pulled if they object to its use. Unfortunately, compliance with these requests isn’t always immediate, leading to public spats and, in some cases, legal action.

The Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr, for instance, took to social media to express his disbelief when their song "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" was played at a Trump event. David Porter, one of the masterminds behind Sam and Dave’s "Hold On, I’m Coming," was equally vocal when Trump used the song at an NRA rally, exclaiming "Hell to the NO!" on Twitter.

One of the more recent and high-profile cases involves the estate of Isaac Hayes, co-writer of "Hold On, I’m Coming," who has threatened legal action against Trump for what they claim is 134 counts of copyright infringement. This legal battle, if pursued, could set a significant precedent in the ongoing struggle between artists and political campaigns.

ICULINARY: CHILI’S TAKES ON THE BIG MAC: THE BATTLE OF BURGERS HEATS UP

n a surprising twist in the fast-food arena, Chili's has emerged as an unexpected contender, taking a bold bite out of McDonald’s Big Mac dominance. While the golden arches have long been synonymous with quick, affordable meals, a new trend is shaking things up as more Americans are getting their burger fix at Chili’s instead of McDonald’s.

The Fast-Food Dilemma

Fast food, once the go-to for budget-conscious diners, is facing a new challenge: rising prices. As the cost of a quick meal escalates, many customers are looking for better value, and they’re finding it at sit-down restaurants like Chili’s. Brinker International, the parent company of Chili’s, recently reported a nearly 15% jump in same-store sales and a significant 6% increase in traffic, largely thanks to a clever promotion of their new burger, the Big Smasher.

Kevin Hochman, CEO of Brinker International, noted in an April earnings call that their success was fueled by consumers’ frustration with the high prices at fast-food joints. This insight led to a bold advertising campaign that positions fast food as a lesser option compared to what Chili’s offers. The message was clear: why settle for a fast-food burger when you can enjoy a sit-down meal for nearly the same price?

The Big Smasher: A Burger Behemoth

Enter the Big Smasher, Chili’s latest weapon in the burger wars. Priced at $10.99, this burger is marketed as having “twice the beef of a Big Mac,” featuring a hefty half-pound slab of meat. Unlike the Big Mac’s two patties, the Big Smasher opts for a single, more substantial patty, topped with familiar favorites like diced onions, lettuce, pickles, cheese, and Thousand Island dressing.

This burger isn’t just about size; it’s about value and flavor. Chili’s cheeky campaign didn’t just introduce a new menu item—it tapped into the cultural conversa-

tion around fast food and its increasing prices. By offering a bigger, better burger in a full-service restaurant setting, Chili’s has managed to lure customers away from traditional fast-food options.

The Competition Reacts

Chili’s success hasn’t gone unnoticed. In response, McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s have all scrambled to offer their own deals to reclaim customers. McDonald’s, in particular, rolled out a $5 promotion that proved so popular it’s been extended through August.

Yet, despite these efforts, the competition’s latest results have been less

than stellar. Chili’s, on the other hand, continues to outperform industry standards in both sales and traffic, thanks to their innovative approach to the burger battle.

What’s Next for Chili’s?

While the Big Smasher has undoubtedly been a hit, it hasn’t been enough to completely satisfy investors. Despite impressive sales figures, Brinker International’s stock took an 11% hit following the announcement of their earnings, as profits didn’t quite meet analyst expectations. Even so, Hochman remains optimistic, indicating that the Big Smasher promotion will continue throughout the year, promising even more to come in this ongoing battle for burger supremacy.

The RISE scholarship banquet has become a beacon of hope and inspiration in Houston, highlighting the importance of educational support for the city’s youth. This year’s event, bolstered by a generous $1 million pledge from Freeport LNG, underscores the growing commitment to empowering the next generation. With this support, the program has successfully funded 103 scholarships to date, opening doors for students to attend colleges, universities, and technical institutes across the nation.

Mayor John Whitmire, a stalwart supporter of the MBK initiative, delivered an inspiring speech at the banquet. "It's an

honor to be part of an event that recognizes such incredible young talent," he said.

"These students represent the future, and seeing these organizations come together to support their journey is inspiring."

Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum’s chief of staff, Didi Chavis, also presented a proclamation honoring MBK Houston and Freeport LNG for their invaluable contributions.

The impact of the MBK program is felt far beyond the city limits of Houston. Scholarship recipients are now attending prestigious institutions such as Northeastern University, Prairie View A&M University, and Morehouse College, thanks to the ongoing support from MBK initiatives and

partnerships with mentoring programs like 100 Black Men, Social Justice Learning Institute, 8 Million Stories, and TFI. These programs provide not only financial support but also the crucial mentoring and guidance that help students navigate their educational journeys.

The selection process for these scholarships is rigorous, focusing on academic achievements, community involvement, and leadership potential. Many of the recipients are the first in their families to attend college, making this achievement all the more significant. This support is not just about education; it's about breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for future generations.

Heather Browne, Director of Corporate Communications for Freeport LNG, spoke passionately about the company's role in this transformative initiative. “Freeport LNG is honored to support MBK Houston in their mission of empowering our youth. LEGACY: WALLY AMOS - THE MAN WHO BAKED HIS WAY INTO AMERICA'S HEART REMEMBERED

The world lost a legendary entrepreneur and a true original in Wallace "Wally" Amos, who passed away at the age of 88. Known for creating the iconic Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies, Wally Amos left behind a legacy as rich and satisfying as the cookies he baked. He passed away peacefully at his home in Honolulu, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with dementia.

Wally Amos was more than just a name on a cookie box; he was a symbol of Black excellence, innovation, and tenacity. Born in Tallahassee’s Smoky Hollow neighborhood—a vibrant Black community disrupted by urban development—

Amos’ journey was one of resilience. At the tender age of 12, he moved to Harlem, New York, to live with his aunt, a woman whose culinary skills would forever change his life. It was in her kitchen that young Wally first learned the art of baking, a passion that would eventually propel him into the annals of American business history.

Before becoming a cookie mogul, Amos carved out a successful career in the entertainment industry. He was the first Black talent agent at the prestigious William Morris Agency, where he represented superstars like Simon & Garfunkel and Diana Ross. But it was the sweet allure of chocolate chip cookies, baked with love

and a touch of nostalgia, that ultimately became his calling card.

In 1975, with a modest loan from friends like Marvin Gaye, Amos opened his first Famous Amos cookie shop on Sunset Boulevard. The bakery quickly became a sensation, offering a product that stood out in a market flooded with preservative-laden snacks. His cookies, made with pure ingredients and baked to perfection, captured the hearts—and taste buds—of millions. By 1981, the company had blossomed into a $12 million empire, with Famous Amos cookies lining the shelves of stores across America.

Amos himself became a pop culture icon, instantly recognizable by his infectious smile and signature Panama hat. His charisma landed him guest spots on popular TV shows like "The Jeffersons" and "Taxi," and later "The Office." Yet, despite his success, Amos struggled with the complexities of business management. By 1988, he had sold his stake in the company and the rights to his own name—a decision he later reflected upon with a mix of regret and humility.

Never one to be defeated, Amos turned his focus to inspiring others. He became a motivational speaker and author, sharing his story and advocating for Black

entrepreneurs. He also never abandoned his first love: baking. Amos launched several other cookie ventures and even opened a small bakery in Honolulu, where he combined his love for reading with his passion for baking by establishing a children’s library within the shop. Every Saturday, he would delight local kids by reading to them for hours, fostering both literacy and a love for sweets.

Amos' passing marks the end of an era, but his impact will be felt for generations.

A REVIEW OF NOSTALGIC

iconic series. Directed by Fede Alvarez, known for his work on Evil Dead (2013) and Don’t Breathe (2016), this film attempts to strike the perfect balance between sci-fi and horror. But does it succeed in delivering the same spine-tingling chills that made the original Alien a classic? Let's dive into the details.

Set in the 22nd century, Alien: Romulus follows the story of a group of twentysomething scavengers led by Rain (Cailee Spaeny), an overworked miner with dreams of escaping the dark and oppressive Jackson Star Mining Colony. Joining her on this treacherous journey are her ex-lover Tyler (Archie Renaux), an eclectic crew

of characters, and an android named Andy (David Jonsson), who’s way more than just your average robot. They’re on a quest for treasure aboard an abandoned space station, but little do they know, it’s not gold they’ll be finding—it’s a whole lot of trouble. Facehuggers, chestbursters, and xenomorphs, oh my!

The visual effects in Alien: Romulus are a mixed bag. While Alvarez captures the terror of the unknown with thunderous sound effects and a gut-wrenching score by Benjamin Wallfisch, the cinematography leaves much to be desired. Unlike the visual excellence of Ridley Scott’s original, which created an atmosphere that was both breath-

taking and terrifying, Romulus falls short.

The lighting is often too dark, obscuring crucial details, and the special effects don’t break any new ground. The alien creatures, once terrifyingly unique, now feel more like rehashed versions of monsters we’ve seen a hundred times before.

Where the movie really picks up is in its sound design. Alvarez uses a thunderous, almost overwhelming soundscape to instill fear in the audience, making hearts race and palms sweat. It’s a sensory assault that leaves you feeling like you’ve been run over by a truck, and the effect lingers long after you leave the theater. It’s not so much the visuals that scare you, but the sounds— every creak, every hiss, and every scream is amplified to bone-rattling intensity.

The cast does a commendable job, but there’s a clear standout in Aileen Wu’s portrayal of Navarro, the feisty pilot. She brings a refreshing energy to the role, channeling the same fierce determination that made Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley an icon. On the other hand, Jonsson’s portrayal of Andy the android feels unbalanced and lacks the complexity one would expect from a character with such potential.
