COMMENTARY

TIME FOR DEMOCRACY TO WORK By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia says he will oppose suspending or repealing the filibuster to pass voter reforms because they should be passed on a bipartisan basis. AP Photos

T

he right to vote is fundamental to a democracy. Today in America, however, that right is under partisan attack across the country. If it is to be defended, nonpartisan reforms must pass across a partisan divide. The question now is whether Democrats will join together to protect the right to vote from the assault it faces from Republicans at every level of government. That assault is clear and unrelenting. Right-wing justices on the Supreme Court - appointed by Republican presidents - have systematically undermined the right to vote - gutting the Voting Rights Act, opening the door to unlimited and secret money from corporations and the super-rich, and enabling partisan gerrymandering free of judicial review. At the state level, Republican operatives and politicians have echoed Donald Trump's Big Lie about the 2020 election - a lie refuted by Trump's own

attorney general, by Trump-appointed judges and by Republican election officials. They have all used fictitious delusions about fraud as an excuse to pass a bevy of laws to make voting harder in states that they control. Thus far, 18 Republican-controlled states have passed laws to limit access to the ballot box, or, even more dangerously, to undercut an independent, nonpartisan counting of the ballots cast. And at the national level, Republicans in the Senate have joined at the hip to block efforts to reform election laws to protect free and fair elections. They have used the filibuster to block the ability of the majority to act. The reality is indisputable. One party - the party supported by a minority of the American people - is seeking to make it harder to vote. One party supported by a growing majority is seeking to make voting easier. That isn't new. After the Civil War, the 14th and 15th Amendments,

August 05, 2021 - August 11, 2021

which guaranteed freed slaves the right to vote and to equal protection under the laws, were only passed over the bitter partisan opposition of Southern Democrats. Modern-day Republicans are now following in the footsteps of the plantation Democrats of the Old South, who enacted the Jim Crow laws that suppressed the black vote for decades. Are today's Democrats prepared to protect the right to vote against their efforts? n August 16, the population data from the recent census will be released to the states. This will trigger a flurry of redistricting with Republicans intent on partisan gerrymandering that could give them enough rigged seats to win the House. Two Democratic senators -West Virginia's Joe Manchin and Arizona's Krysten Sinema -- argue that they will oppose suspending or repealing the filibuster to pass voter reforms because they should be passed on a bipartisan basis. "The right to vote is fundamental to our American democracy and protecting that right should not be about party or politics," wrote Manchin, adding that "protecting this right ... should never be done in a partisan manner." Surely, it would be preferable to pass reforms with the support of both

www.StyleMagazine.com

51

parties, but it is impossible when one party is all in on voter suppression. The Democratic leadership plans to give Manchin the chance to enlist Republican support for the modest election reforms that Manchin backs. There is no sign that he can gain anything close to the 10 Republican votes needed to overcome a filibuster. Delay is a loser's game. It is time for Democrats to act, and for Manchin and Sinema to face reality. Congress must pass reforms to outlaw partisan gerrymandering and protect access to the ballot box before it is too late. That will require suspending or repealing the filibuster and ending the ability of the minority to frustrate the will of the majority. It's time for our democracy to work - this time to protect itself. You can write to the Rev. Jesse Jackson in care of this newspaper or by email at jjackson@rainbowpush.org. STATE NEWS: INVOKING THE SPIRIT OF SELMA, TEXAS ACTIVISTS BEGIN 27-MILE MARCH FOR VOTING RIGHTS By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

W

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, a Texas activists begin 27-mile march demanding federal action on voting rights. Participates will start the march in Georgetown to Austin for Democracy.

hen the Rev. Dr. William Barber speaks, his listeners lean in. His large frame bent forward, the lilt in his voice easily fills the space between them as he preaches on racial and economic equality and justice. But on this muggy, overcast morning in Georgetown, a suburban community north of Austin, the pastor turned activist did not rise to sermonize. On Wednesday, and for the next few days, his ministry will be carried out by marching. From the grounds of the Christ Lutheran Church, Barber led a group of about 100 people, the number capped because of pandemic precautions, spaced out in rows of threes and fours on the first leg of a four-day, 27-mile march to the state Capitol building in Austin. The purpose behind the trek, organized by the Poor People’s Campaign, which Barber co-chairs, is to build pressure on Congress, particularly the U.S. Senate, to pass sweeping federal legislation that would boost or safeguard access to voting — and preempt much of the contentious voting bill that the Texas Legislature is expected to pass. “We are here today because of a mandate,” Barber told the crowd of marchers before they began their journey. “These state legislators have mandated that we must have federal intervention.”

6

On Wednesday, the winding crowd of marchers traversing south along the frontage road of a busy Interstate 35 was made up of Texans from across the state and included members of the clergy, Austin’s state Sen. Sarah Eckhardt and average Texans who wanted to see federal action on voting. Former congressman Beto O’Rourke, who with his voter outreach organization Powered by People partnered to host the march, walked at the tail end. Over the next few days, the march will proceed to various places of worship along the way. Marching groups are supposed to rotate out after a few hours of walking — the highs for the week will be in the high 90s though the heat index will push the temperature a few degrees higher — and the march will culminate in a Saturday morning rally at the Texas Capitol. The 27-mile march, organizers said, draws inspiration from the historic Selma to Montgomery marches that played a crucial role in the passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 to shore up the right to vote for Black Americans. “It’s Selma-like in the sense that it’s connecting voting rights and economic injustice, in the sense that Selma called all people regardless of their race, creed and their color to stand up,” Barber said at a press conference

August 05, 2021 - August 11, 2021

Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, left, and former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke Tuesday evening. “Thirdly, in the sense that the Selma march said you can't litigate your way out of this state by state. You can't simply mobilize more people to the polls state by state. You must have federal action.” But the contemporary push for federal legislation to protect the vote has fallen well short of the groundswell it took for Congress and former President Lyndon B. Johnson to act. For months — as GOP-controlled legislatures across the country moved to enact new restrictions on voting — voting rights advocates have called on the Democratically controlled Congress and President Joe Biden to push through federal legislation that could stem that tide. Their goal rests on two federal bills that would restore sweeping protections for voters of color previously contained in the Voting Rights Act — which has been whittled down by U.S. Supreme Court decisions — and set new federal standards for elections to widen access to the ballot box. But it still remains uncertain that the legislation will make it a vote in the U.S. Senate where Democrats, who hold half the seats in the chamber, have not been able to overcome the filibuster’s

www.StyleMagazine.com

60-vote requirement. “We have not gotten to that level of urgency that this crisis demands from us,” O’Rourke said in an interview ahead of the march. He pointed to the Texas House Democrats’ quorum break — just the fifth in the Legislature’s history — as an important development in bringing the broader effort against new voting restrictions, like those contained in the GOP priority voting bill Democrats are blocking, to a fever pitch. O’Rourke indicated the march is meant to nationalize the Texas fight to push its gravity on those in power in Washington, D.C. — the one place, he said, where the fight could be won. “You cannot quorum break to victory against voter suppression and the right to vote,” O’Rourke said. “All you can do is buy us time.”

LOCAL: HISD SUPERINTENDENT HOUSE SAYS DELTA'S RAPID SPREAD HASN'T YET ALTERED PLANS FOR IN-PERSON CLASSES By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

With schools returning to 100% in-person learning this month, some doctors said the results of a statewide antibody study show why masks are still necessary. A statewide survey shows most school-age kids have no immunity against COVID-19 going into the new school year.

A

s the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus silently swarms throughout the Lone Star State, the pandemic in Texas has taken an undeniable turn for the worse in recent weeks. With hospitalizations for the deadly disease rising to heights not seen in months and new daily case counts rapidly increasing, a new surge is clearly underway propelled

largely by younger, unvaccinated residents falling ill to the virus. With the school year fast approaching, recently minted Houston ISD Superintendent Millard House II released a video message this weekend in an attempt to reassure district parents and students that even with HISD’s continued plans for 100 percent in-person classes

starting August 23 that the school district is still on full alert about COVID-19 issues. His video came after there were news reports saying HISD was reducing its coronavirus health emergency strategies despite a recent and significant uptick in the number of COVID-19 cases in the area and the state. Gov. Greg Abbott had already placed a ban on classroom mask

mandates in a May executive order. “I wanted to make sure that our community understands and knows that we are working closely with the Harris County Health Department, as well as working in accordance with the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics to monitor the COVID-19 issues that are going on throughout our community,” House said. Investigators with the Texas Coronavirus Antibody Response Survey, also called Texas CARES, have been working to find out how many people have COVID-19 antibodies. The body produces antibodies after getting infected with the virus or getting the vaccine. Since September, more than 12,000 Texans have gotten antibody blood tests for the study. There are about 500 school-age participants in the survey, and 66% have no protection against the virus as the highly contagious Delta variant spreads.

LOCAL: FORT BEND COUNTY UPS COVID THREAT LEVEL AS SCHOOL YEAR APPROACHES AND DELTA VARIANT SURGES By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

E

ven though Fort Bend County has one of the highest COVID-19 vaccination rate of all Texas counties, Fort Bend County Judge KP George announced Tuesday that the Delta variant of the coronavirus has caused local virus metrics to spike enough for him to raise the county’s COVID threat level from yellow to orange, asking all county residents to minimize contact with others and imploring folks to mask up and get vaccinated if they haven’t already. “If you’re not vaccinated, please,” George begged, “participate in your own rescue.” Harris County similarly raised its coronavirus threat level last week, citing Delta’s spread throughout the Houston area’s unvaccinated population. The troubling rise of the Delta variant over the past few weeks has led to not only threat level shifts, but to increased pleas from public health experts such as Baylor College of Medicine’s Dr. Peter Hotez for the unvaccinated to get shots pronto. To help entice hesitant locals who still ha-

ven’t taken any of the widely available, highly-effective COVID-19 vaccines, the Houston Health Department announced earlier this week it would start offering gift cards as incentives to folks who get fully vaccinated at several of the department’s local vaccination sites. Anyone who gets fully vaccinated within 42 days of getting their first shot (or opts to take the one shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine) at any of the following locations in the timeframes listed below will receive a $25 gift card from either Walmart, Target, Old Navy, Ross, Amazon, Shell, Walgreens or METRO Houston as long as supplies last, according to the city health department.

During Tolson’s time, he helped break barriers, integrating collegiate debates and guiding the Wiley debate team on a 10-year undefeated winning streak. The year the film debuted, Washington made a $1 million commitment to ensure the debate team at Wiley college would continue to succeed and keep the scholarly tradition alive and kicking. Recently, the famous debate team announced they had received their next round of support, a fourth $100,000 payment from Washington’s Family Foundation. The funding goes towards covering sign-up for debate team representatives and offering scholarships. Since the funding began in 2007, Washington’s generous donation has helped many students at the historically Black university. Traveling the country to compete on behalf of my college, being a leader on campus, and having it paid for by Mr. Washington, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.” Dr. Herman J. Felton, Wiley College President, spoke about the significance of the funding. “Being a dominant force as home of The Great Debaters makes us a very attractive option for those skilled in debate, and this financial support further amplifies the benefits of becoming a Wiley debate scholar.” In a 2018 press release, Washington said he plans to continue supporting the team along their journey. “We are honored to continue supporting the best and the brightest in the land and look forward to The Great Debaters continuing to do what they do best: win.” Thank you for your work, Mr. Washington! Jalen Green, the second selection in NBA draft, has signed his rookie contract with the Rockets and will earn about $8.99M during his first season and could make up to $40.8M over the four-year deal.

W

ho knew that the 2021 NBA Draft would turn out to be the “Fountain of Youth” for the Houston Rockets as they selected four players all of which are 19 years old and younger. Add that to the four players they already have under the age of 25. Head Coach Stephen Silas and General Manager Rafael Stone are building a foundation that could take the Houston Rockets back to the playoffs after finishing a dismal 16-53 season. Jalen Green Houston used the win of the #2 NBA Draft pick to select Jalen Green, who opted out of going to college to sign with the NBA G-League Ignite, a team dedicated to the development and mentorship of young elite prospects who want to play in the NBA. Green was a most sought after high school recruit who averaged 31.5 points, 5.0 assists and 7.5 rebounds as a senior at Prolific Prep in California. Those numbers earned him a spot on the McDonald’s All-American Team and had him rated as the No. 1 high school prospect by ESPN in the Class of 2020. He also won multiple gold medals competing with USA Basketball. In April of last year, Green made headlines when he decided to take his talents to the G-League

10

rather than to college and shined in the 15 games he played in. During his time in the NBA bubble in Florida, Green averaged 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. Those numbers were good enough to help lead the G-League Ignite team to the playoffs. “That feeling was amazing,” said Green about hearing his name called by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. He elaborated on what he observed about from the Rockets on last year. “They get out and play to their strengths,” Green answered at the Rockets practice facility where the 2021 draft picks were introduced. “They play hard. Coach Silas was telling me what their main focus was going into next year and I really like it. I think I fit in really well here.” Alpen Sengun Houston, who also possessed the 23rd & 24th picks in the first round, didn’t feel like that would be enough and decided to make a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder to acquire Alpern Sengun from Turkey. The Rockets sent the Thunder two first round draft picks that were owed to them from the Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards. Sengun, the Turkish Super League MVP, averaged 18.6 points and 8.9 rebounds in 34 games this past season. That is very impressive from a young

man who was burning through defenders at 18 years old. He recently just turned 19. “The path that I took to be here in my life was not easy for me,” said Sengun. “I will be battling for this team, and I will put everything out there to show how good we are.” His offensive abilities have been compared to 2021 NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and his numbers from last season backs that up as he shot 62.6% from the floor. "He has a higher ceiling than most guys,” general manager Rafael Stone said about Sengun, who participated in three FIBA Europe Cup games and in Olympic qualifying games this summer with the Turkish National Team. “We were very focused on him. We did not think he had a chance to get to us at 23." Usman Garuba With the 23rd pick, the Rockets made sure that they could have someone that could play outstanding defense and take some of the defensive pressure off current Rockets center Christian Wood. Houston chose Garuba, a very tough 19-yearold who played for Real Madrid in Spain’s Liga ACB League for his toughness and defensive prowess. This

strength of Garuba puzzled most NBA scouts because the intensity in which he plays with on the defensive end takes years to perfect in the NBA. "I think he's the best defender in the world outside of the NBA, and he's just 19 years old,” said Stone. “I think he potentially could be really, really impactful on that side of the ball." Garuba is currently playing for Spain in the Olympics and wasn’t made available for the Rockets press conference. Josh Christopher Houston used their final pick of the night to draft Josh Christopher out of Arizona State. The 6’5 combo guard has played in numerous AAU summer league games with the Rockets No. 2 pick and they have a very good chemistry when they are on the court together. Christopher, a former McDonald’s All-American, appeared in 15 games for the Sun Devils during his freshman season where he averaged 14.3 points and 4.7 rebounds. His ability to create his own shot is what intrigued the Rockets, but they also noticed his defensive mindset as they watched film on him from his

college days. “I also think Josh [Christopher] has the potential to be a truly lockdown man-to-man defender,” said Stone when asked about why the Rockets selected what some draft experts considered a second-round draft experiment. Overall, the Houston Rockets did a fantastic job of drafting to their needs. They took the best available players that would help coach Silas implement an offensive scheme that fits a fast and up-paced group of players. Rockets fans will have to be patient this upcoming season with the fresh group of teenagers adapting to the NBA, but the future is very bright and looks very promising. “I think for our fans that this is a really, really exciting time,” Stone said. “For the last 10-years, until this past year, we were a team that was competing for a championship. Now is our chance to build back up and there is a lot of fun on that path too.”

No one will ever take that from you, so wherever you place, one through eight, you are an Olympian, no matter what.’ The Lord just put a little cherry on this sundae.” That wish came true. On Tuesday in Tokyo, Rogers stormed from behind down the home stretch to capture a place on the podium, winning the bronze with a personal best time of 1:56.81. And it was a close race. The times between the third- through fifth-place finishers were only separated by two-tenths of a second. ”

with Super Saturday Vaccination Days is to administer enough vaccines that will allow for parents, educators, and students to feel comfortable enough to return to face to face instruction and be better protected from variants of COVID-19.” Currently, 54.3 percent of Houstonians age 12 and above have been fully vaccinated. With an increase in hospitalizations and the current spike in the number of cases due to the Delta variant, the City continues to encourage people ages 12 and above to get fully vaccinated. “If you are unvaccinated, you are a threat to yourself and everyone around you, especially your family,” said Dr. David Persse, chief medical officer for the City of Houston. “This virus is spreading so rapidly that most unvaccinated people may get COVID-19 and many will get sick enough to need hospital care. Every person who is hospitalized for COVID-19 occupies a bed that’s needed for typical emergencies like heart attacks, strokes, and trauma.” The Independent School Districts currently participating are Aldine ISD, Alief ISD, Crosby ISD,

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, Galena Park ISD, Houston ISD, Huffman ISD, Katy ISD, Pasadena ISD, and Spring ISD. They all have at least one school participating with more schools are being added as well as school districts. “Fourteen HISD campuses will take part in the mayor’s Super Saturday Vaccination Day initiative this month,” said Houston Independent School District Superintendent Millard House. “Increasing Vaccination rates among our communities will help ease the worries of our families as their children return to school. For some of them, it will be the first time inside a school building in 18 months. Rest assured, HISD is planning for a safe return. We are doing everything we can to protect our students and staff, but we need your help. The best way you can do that is by getting vaccinated.” “Super Saturday Vaccination Days” will start this Saturday, August 7 and will take place every Saturday in August in different school campuses throughout the Houston region. s the As we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year, HISD will provide in-person learning five days per week for all students during the 2021-2022 school year. Virtual learning will not be offered. To ensure safe in-person experiences, HISD is working closely with health and education officials and main-

taining the following health and safety protocols. Students, staff, and visitors are asked to monitor their health, stay home when sick, and wash or sanitize their hands regularly. • Masks are strongly encouraged in schools and buildings, but not required per state mandate.

in place.

• Plexiglass dividers will be kept

• Visitation will be limited to essential visitors who have a scheduled appointment. This includes parent and community volunteers pre-approved through HISD’s Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) program. • Hand sanitizer and other clean-

ing and disinfecting supplies will be provided, and buildings and buses will continue to be cleaned and disinfected daily. • Heating and cooling systems will undergo regular inspections with repairs prioritized and filters replaced with the highest grade allowable. All other health and safety protocols implemented during the pandemic will be discontinued with the deactivation of the Communicable Disease Plan. This ‘Ready, Set, Go!’ plan outlines the instructional and operational protocols for all facets of the country’s seventh-largest public-school system. However, because of the possibility of changing conditions, this plan is considered a living document. HISD administrators will continually monitor health conditions and review procedures and protocols, making adjustments as needed to ensure compliance with public health guidelines and local, state, and federal law.

LOCAL NEWS: OFFICE OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY, KIPP TEXAS BEGIN CONTRACTOR DIVERSITY INITIATIVE By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

Representatives from KIPP Texas, standing from left: Kris Cheung, Chief Operating Officer; Biko Taylor, Sr. Director of Procurement – Operations; Madison Sidney, Communications Intern; and seated from left, Cymel Abdul, Procurement Manager, join Marsha E. Murray, OBO Director, and Lalla V. Morris, OBO Assistant Director, to solidify the OBO-KIPP Texas Contractor Diversity Initiative.

R

.epresentatives from the City of Houston's Office of Business Opportunity (OBO) and KIPP Texas Public Schools are working together to advance contracting opportunities for minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) in Houston and across Texas. Research shows minority and women entrepreneurs face three distinct challenges: limited access to capital, limited access to business networks, and limited opportunity for business skills development. In addition, minority-owned businesses have disproportionately suffered during the pandemic. According to a study from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, minority-owned businesses are feeling a greater impact from the pandemic, report assistance being more vital, and have heightened concern about the pandemic’s impact.

The OBO-KIPP Texas Contractor Diversity Initiative will provide MWBE suppliers in the City of Houston’s Certified Firm Directory access and opportunities to provide products and services throughout KIPP Texas as either prime contractors or subcontractors. KIPP Texas is an open-enrollment, public, tuition-free charter school network of 59 schools with nearly 34,000 pre-K-12 students across the state. KIPP Texas’s student population is 98% Latinx, Black, and Asian. Each year KIPP Texas spends more than $300M to educate students in contracts for construction, equipment, and materials. The organization is committed to providing businesses owned by Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and women with contracting opportunities to provide products and services throughout the organization as either prime contractors or subcontractors. Throughout

the year, OBO will also have a presence in KIPP’s outreach events for construction projects that require MWBE representation, as well as its supplier networking and meet and greet events. “Houston is home to highly qualified contractors from all walks of life who are ready to perform high-quality work,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Programs like this provide opportunity and strengthen our neighborhoods by ensuring equity in business opportunities.” In addition to being eligible to meet required MWBE goals on City contracts, firms certified by the City of Houston have a myriad of opportunities for contracting with other agencies in the public and private sector, including KIPP. “With the OBO-KIPP Texas Contractor Diversity Initiative, we are looking forward to seeing substantial growth in the number of contracts awarded to our pool of certified firms, as well as to creating peer mentorship programming to enhance the pipeline of qualified MWBE suppliers in construction,” said OBO Director Marsha E. Murray. “KIPP Texas has an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are excited to partner with the Office of Business Opportunity to provide contracting opportunities for small business owners, which has a direct impact on our students, their families, and the communities we serve,” said KIPP Texas Public Schools Chief Operating Officer Kris Cheung. “We look forward to collaborating with a more diverse group of suppliers, vendors, and strategic partners. This partnership will allow our procurement team to reach new MWBE businesses in Houston and throughout Texas. We are excited to embark on this journey and leverage OBO’s vast network of certified firms.” For more information about procurement at KIPP Texas, go to Procurement | KIPP Texas Public Schools. he singer, born Robyn Fenty, didn’t just rise to the top as an entertainer, but over the past few years she’s become quite the businesswoman thanks to Fenty Beauty — the cosmetics company made to make “women everywhere (feel) included.” After launching in 2017, Fenty Beauty is now the reason that Rihanna has hit billionaire status. The 33-year-old is now worth an estimated $1.7 billion, according to Forbes. Not only does this make her the wealthiest female musician in the world, but now Rihanna is alongside Oprah Winfrey as the richest female entertainer. An estimated $1.4 billion of her fortune is all thanks to Fenty Beauty which the “Love On The Brain Singer” owns half of. The rest of her coins comes from her lingerie company, Savage x Fenty, which is worth an estimated $270 million and the remaining amount is thanks to the money she’s made as a chart-topping musician and actress. If folks haven’t considered Rihanna a mogul yet, they can certainly start now. The Barbados native has even capitalized off of her social media presence with 101 million Instagram followers and 102.5 million followers on Twitter. Her social media has not only helped her to build a beauty brand, but she

KEEPING THE DOLLAR BLACK: MEET ABREETTA BONNER OF BREE NICOLE & CO. A

By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

new entrepreneur has to have vision in sights unseen, a strong belief in self to achieve success, and a whole lot of faith to keep pushing during the ups and downs. Abreetta Bonner had all of these characteristics when she launched her luxury lifestyle brand business, Bree Nicole & Co., in the middle of a pandemic. The entrepreneurial life was embedded in Bonner at birth. Her father, the late Harding Goode, II, had always been in business for himself running his trucking and demolition business. She saw up close the late nights and early mornings. She witnessed him contemplate decisions and whether he was moving too fast or too slow. She was right there when all her father's strength was gone and he running on pure passion for the industry he loved and the business he built. Her father inspired her to do as he did - create something out of nothing. Bree Nicole & Co. was established officially in December 2020. Much like her first post on business Instagram of a lit match, Bree was burning at both ends. By day she is a higher education administrator, PhD student, digital content creator, wife, friend, sister, and daughter. And by night she is the CEO of a company with two individual brands. Her day job pays the bills while her night job ignites her dreams. Bree Nicole Candles Whether it is used to illuminate a dark room and/or add a pleasant fragrance to the air, a candle can be found in every home in America. In Bonner's childhood home a burning candle meant the kitchen was clean. Every time her mother washed the dishes, wipe the countertops, and swept the kitchen floor she would complete her kitchen clean-up by burning a scented candle. Bonner remembered how that small routine act played such an important role in how she manages her home to this day. She associates burning candles with cleanliness and good hygiene, which impacts her mental health. Bonner feels that she operates better in a clean space. In a nod to her mother, she established Bree Nicole Candles in December 2020. Taking her first orders as presale only, Bonner released the luxury candle collection, which included four candles. #InMyBag is a holiday candle that is 100% soy with fragrances of cranberry, vanilla, and cinnamon. Too Blessed To Be Stressed is a candle that smells like peppermint. Her signature candle Bree Nicole gives self-care vibes with lemongrass and jasmine. From those three introductory scents to her now line that includes nine scents that make-up five collections, Bonner is killing the candle

Abreetta Bonner is a native of Houston. Bree Nicole & Co. was established officially in December 2020. game. All of her candles are 100% soy, vegan, and not tested on animals. The candles come at two different price points - 4-oz mini candles at $20 for the Vacay Vibes mini collection (includes 4 candles) and 11-oz candles sold individually at $30 each. Candles have fragrances that invite users to relax, love, soothe, and let things go. Bree Nicole Cosmetics Seven months after the debut of Bree Nicole Candles, Bonner dropped Bree Nicole Cosmetics. Starting with lip-glosses, the line includes seven shades. Current colors are natural to varying pinks that sell for $10 a tube except for the premiere gloss that retails at $15. Packaging includes a large doe foot applicator. There is one collection, Southern Charm, that includes Darlin', Suga, Puddin', and Sweetie. All glosses are vegan, smooth, pigmented, moisturizing, non-sticky, long-lasting, and have glossy finishes. Lip-glosses are cruelty-free, paraben-free, gluten-free, and phthalates-free. More is coming from Bree Nicole & Co. as the overall goal of the company is to bring everyday luxury lifestyle items to regular people with regular budgets. In the future, Bree Nicole Cosmetics will have a full makeup line with foundations, blushes, eye shadows, lipsticks, and more. Bree Nicole & Co.

Her advice to others seeking success with their business is to always have a plan mapped out with a well developed budget. Doing this has saved Bonner money by buying intentionally and not wasting money. Her second tip is to test products out with small groups before introducing them to the public. Bonner tested out several scents for candles and those the group didn't like didn't make it in any of her collections. She approached the glosses in the same way. This helped set her up for success since she knew she was putting out her best products in scents people wanted. Lastly, she advises to never skim on packaging. Invest in branding and in your business. As a new entrepreneur, Bonner is her only employee as she creates the products, develops the brand, promotes the products, and processes the orders. She calls herself the "epitome of small business." Bonner said, "I wanted to be as hands-on as possible." Being a businesswoman has Bonner in a constant state of learning as she goes. In this process, she has had some incidents that some would call failures but to Bonner those are lessons to fuel accomplishments. With every move she makes with Bree Nicole & Co. Bonner's goal is to help and educate people on living luxuriously on a budget. "If it does come in any form of that then my goal

has been reached," said Bonner. Every turn keeps Bonner looking for how she can grow and make her business better as she will always be "forever networking, connecting, and trying to get a booking and form a booking," August is the perfect month to support a business like Bree Nicole & Co. since it is Black Business Month. Consumers are encouraged to be intentionally with their spending and do all they can to ensure money stays in the African American community. Abreetta Bonner is a native of Houston, TX. She is an educator, content creator, and doctoral student. She is a social media influencer with over 500 subscribers on YOUTUBE where she documents her daily life & health & wellness tips. She is married to John Bonner who is neo-soul R&B artist with an EP called "Love Let Go." Check out BreeNicoleCo.com or JDariusMusic. com to keep up with the Bonners.
