COMMENTARY
PRESIDENT BIDEN GETS IT RIGHT By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
E
Afghan people climb atop a plane as they wait at the Kabul airport in Kabul
ven as the Congress debates whether to go forward with a budget resolution calling for devoting $3.5 trillion over 10 years to begin lifting children out of poverty, making college more affordable, and addressing the real and present danger of catastrophic climate change, the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan has captured the top of the news. With few exceptions, Republicans line up to blame President Joe Biden for ending our 20-year war in Afghanistan. Even Donald Trump, who negotiated a deal with the Taliban to get the troops out by May, claims he would have gotten Taliban support for a more graceful exit. Neo-conservatives and hawks line up to argue that the United States should have stayed, using a small number of U.S. forces and expanded air power to keep the Taliban at bay indefinitely. The cost wouldn't be more than $50 or 60 billion a year, they say. Conservative Democrats also criticize the administration's handling of the exit. These same politicians and pundits-virtually without exception-- object to Biden's plan to invest around $350 billion a year for 10 years to make America better. Increases in the military spending -- already greater than the combined total of the next 10 militaries in the world -- gain bipartisan support, while Republican filibusters and Democratic conservatives imperil passage of any significant social investment. The U.S. entanglement in Afghanistan has been a costly folly almost from the very start. In America's longest war, we spent 20 years fighting in the civil strife of an impov-

erished country on the other side of the world. We wasted over $2 trillion, suffered over 2,500 deaths and 25,000 wounded in action, killed more than 100,000 Afghans, while lining the pockets of corrupt politicians. Money targeted for development-- more in comparable dollars the Washington Post reports than that spent to rebuild Europe after World War II-- was largely squandered on corruption. The billions in military training and equipment produced a ghost army that evaporated overnight when the U.S. began to withdraw its military. The various strategies of three presidents were sufficient only to prop up the corrupt government and the hollow military, and to protect leaders from having to admit failure. In contrast, the initiatives in President Biden's $3.5 trillion budget resolution are proven responses to pressing needs, as a new study by the authoritative Center for Budget and Policy Priorities shows. With one in eight children growing up in families with incomes below the poverty line, the child tax credit would cut child poverty by about 40 percent. The day care assistance and universal pre-K offered to families would relieve the burden on middle- and low-income families to prepare their children for school. Repeated studies show that the result is greater success in school, greater likelihood of graduation, and a greater chance at success. Biden's plan would make community colleges tuition free and lift Pell grants for students from low-income families-- proven ways to increase college attendance and graduation. The children get a fair chance. The society benefits from less truancy, less crime, more skilled workers and

citizens, and less inequality. The Biden budget contains a plan for paid family leave, allowing workers to receive paid time off from work when a child is born or a family member becomes ill. Studies-- mostly in other advanced countries that have these programs-- show that allowing workers to take care of family needs without losing their jobs results in a higher high school graduation rate, higher college attendance, and fewer dropouts from work. These are not the false promises of armchair strategists or the inflated statistics of

Pentagon officials trying to peddle progress in a failed war. These are simply the best summaries of what has resulted when similar programs have been tried at the state or local level here or at the national level abroad. And that says nothing about the Biden call for action on climate change, which is long overdue and, as anyone looking across the world can see, desperately needed. Frothing on Fox News, Mike Pompeo, Trump's former secretary of state and a presidential candidate in his own mind, argued bizarrely that Biden has "basically abandoned the global stage in favor of climate change." Say what? Pompeo adds, "They've been focused on critical race theory while the embassy is at risk." These incoherent partisan jibes fog over the simple reality. And that is that for 20 years, American presidents have wasted lives and trillions on an utter folly in Afghanistan while slighting vital needs at home. For all the discomfort at the Taliban offensive, Biden gets it right. It is long past time to end the folly in Afghanistan. And it is long past time to start investing in the future of America's children and in meeting the existential threat posed by climate change. Let's hope that amid all the hand-wringing about the fall of Kabul, no one loses sight of that basic reality. You can write to the Rev. eavy rain from Tropical Storm Grace is forcing Haiti’s government to temporarily pause rescue efforts in the aftermath of a deadly weekend earthquake, which has left thousands of people homeless and in need of assistance across the country’s hard-hit southwest. The pause on Tuesday came after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday morning, killing at least 1,941 people and injuring more than 9,900 others, according to the most recent figures from Haiti’s civil protection agency. The Caribbean country, already struggling to cope with COVID-19, widespread gang violence and political instability worsened in the aftermath of President Jovenel Moise’s killing last month, now faces the difficult task of rebuilding, caring for the injured, and providing emergency shelter and supplies for tens of thousands of displaced families. By Tuesday morning, only a light rain was falling over Les Cayes, the southern coastal city that bore the brunt of the tremor. More than 100 people scrambled to repair makeshift coverings made of wooden poles and tarps that were destroyed by the storm overnight in a makeshift encampment. Mathieu Jameson, deputy head of a committee formed by the tent city residents, said hundreds of people there were in urgent need of food, shelter and medical care. “We don’t have a doctor. We don’t have food. Every morning more people are arriving. We have no bathroom, no place to sleep. We need food, we need more umbrellas,” said Jameson, adding the tent city was still waiting for government aid. Officials said the earthquake destroyed more than 7,000 homes and damaged nearly 5,000 others, leaving some 30,000 families homeless. Hospitals, schools, offices and churches also were demolished or badly damaged. “We are in an exceptional situation,” Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry told reporters on Monday as the tropical storm approached “As of this Monday, we will act with greater speed. Aid management will be accelerated. We will increase our energy tenfold to reach, in terms of assistance, the most victims as
August 19, 2021 - August 25, 2021
possible,” Henry also tweeted. ‘We need help’ The Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an 11am (15:00 GMT) update on Tuesday that tropical storm conditions were expected and could bring an additional two to four inches of rain to southern Haiti and a maximum of 15 inches in some areas. “This heavy rainfall should lead to flash and urban flooding, and possible mudslides,” the NHC said. “The already difficult situation has worsened,” the country’s civil protection agency tweeted. It said search and rescue crews had removed 16 people alive from the rubble on Tuesday morning, but that nine more dead bodies had been recovered. “But we still have … a lot of people sleeping out in the open, either because they’re worried about what might happen in terms of aftershocks or because their houses were damaged or destroyed,” he said. This is not the first humanitarian crisis to hit this part of Haiti, however, as Hurricane Matthew caused catastrophic damage in October 2016, levelling an estimated 200,000 homes and killing hundreds. Doctors worked in makeshift tents outside of hospitals to save the lives of hundreds of injured, including young children and the elderly. The United Nations’ child rights agency (UNICEF) said on Tuesday that about 1.2 million people, including 540,000 children, have been affected by the earthquake. It also said the storm is disrupting access to water, shelter and other services in the hard-hit South, Nippes and Grand’Anse departments. “Countless Haitian families who have lost everything due to the earthquake are now living literally with their feet in the water due to the flooding,” Bruno Maes, the UNICEF representative in Haiti. said in a statement. “Right now, about half a million Haitian children have limited or no access to shelter, safe water, healthcare and nutrition.”

STATE NEWS: THE LESSON GREG ABBOTT SHOULD LEARN FROM HAVING COVID-19 -- BUT WON'T Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large – StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
Texas Governor Greg Abbott arrives for his coronavirus press conference on March 29, 2020. Abbott has faced criticism as millions of Texans have been left without power for days because of a winter storm.
T
he BidenTexas Gov. Greg Abbott, despite being fully vaccinated, announced on Tuesday that he has Covid-19 Even as that news was rippling through the state, the legal fight between Abbott and local officials over the state's ban on mask mandates raged on. Yes, you read that right. Even as Abbott was testing positive for Covid-19, his administration continued to work to keep local jurisdictions from requiring people to wear masks. And all of that was happening as Texas continued to be one of the hotspots in the 4th spike of the coronavirus. The state reported more than 25,000 new cases on Tuesday and is now averaging more than 15,000 cases a day, according to data from The New York Times. Cases are up 44% in the state over the past two weeks. Hospitalizations are up 65%.There's a lesson in all of this for Abbott -- although he's unlikely to see it due to his own political considerations. And that lesson goes like this: Masks work. So do
other mitigation practices like social distancing and limiting large gatherings. That's especially true in dealing with the Delta variant, the nastiest incarnation of the coronavirus we have yet seen. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Delta is twice as contagious as previous variants. It also appears to cause more serious illness in unvaccinated people than the iterations of the virus that came before it. And unlike past variants, Delta produces roughly the same amount of virus in vaccinated people as it does in the unvaccinated, meaning even the vaccinated can pass it along easier. On top of all of that, there's this from The New York Times on Tuesday: "Since Americans first began rolling up their sleeves for coronavirus vaccines, health officials have said that those who are immunized are very unlikely to become infected, or to suffer serious illness or death. But preliminary data from seven
states hint that the arrival of the Delta variant in July may have altered the calculus. "Breakthrough infections in vaccinated people accounted for at least one in five newly diagnosed cases in six of these states and higher percentages of total hospitalizations and deaths than had been previously observed in all of them, according to figures gathered by The New York Times." The best way to stop Delta -- or at least slow it down -- is to get vaccinated. (Less than half of Texans -- 46% --- are fully vaccinated.) But the next best way to mitigate the virus is to wear a mask, to socially distance and to keep away from large crowds. Yes, that's still true, as it has been since scientists first began to really understand both the virus and how it spreads. What's maddening is that despite that established science, there's no way -- because, well, politics -- that Abbott's own experience with Covid-19 changes his mind about kids wearing masks in school or other proven mitigation measures. See, Abbott wants to run for president in 2024 -- or at least be among the pack of people mentioned as possible presidential material. And he knows that to be in that mix, he has to stand against common-sense moves like masking amid this particularly virulent strain of a virus that has already killed 623,000 Americans. Thanks to former President Donald Trump, masking became a political issue -- and remains one. That didn't have to be the case. But wearing a mask -- or getting the Covid-19 vaccine -- is about public health, not politics. It's not about freedom -- we have never had the freedom to endanger others knowingly -- but rather about civic responsibility. We are all in this together, and the actions of one impact many. That elected officials like Abbott continue to prioritize political calculation over public health is deeply disappointing and, candidly, selfish.

ne week or less after Houston-area schools started their sessions, the school district website reported over 1,700 active COVID-19 cases among their students. According to reports, Dayton ISD’s COVID-19 tracker, Galena Park, declared that 25 students and 10 staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Park also reported a total of 62 active cases in the district. Though the numbers are considered low when compared against the number of enrolled students in each district, parents have expressed their concern as the sessions have only just started. Health experts also expressed concern about the highly contagious Delta variant, leaving more parents feeling frustrated about the apparent lack of safe options. Don’t put the health of the kids who are the future of this nation at risk.” Some parents also complained about not having options to wear masks or take virtual classes. “Being able to wear a mask, and making sure my kid is going virtual and she’s getting the education that she needs, is my choice, and I think that needs to be respected,” said Bhavani Natesan, another Fort Bend ISD parent. “I don’t see that happening.” On the other hand, Fort Bend ISD’s said that they are continuously monitoring the situation to ensure the students’ and the staff’s safety. In a statement, Fort Bend ISD announced that the district will not hesitate to close buildings for disinfection when needed.

As many of our Houston-area school districts face complaints about safety, Fort Bend ISD announced that they are opening a limited enrollment Virtual Learning Program (VLP) option by Aug. 30, 2021. According to an ABC13 report, Fort Bend ISD has declared over 5,000 applications for the VLP. The announcement also said that only 1,041 students qualified for the approximately 1,000 seats in the VLP.

A FITTING FAREWELL
REMEMBERING
YOLANDA POPE By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor - www.StyleMagazine.com
Houston Style Magazine's Resident Foodie will be greatly missed not only for her work but also for the passion with which she did it!
T
hWriters are usually the ones who are never at a lost for words. However, this writer is finding it hard to use words to adequately describe Yolanda Pope. Her personality was welcoming. She didn't mind sharing her knowledge. The entire staff knew food, especially good food, was her weakness. Yolanda has had her last dish as she passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 16, 2021. Looking at Twitter feed and you quickly learn that Yolanda loves food and sharing her eating experiencing with fans of her work. Her love of food was her claim. She wrote food reviews for a number of different media outlets, including Houston Style Magazine. Our readers came to love the quick wit of the talented writer. She invited readers to take a seat at her table to be her eating partner as both of you explore the

delicious tastes of our city. Her taste buds were all over the place. She would have grilled red snapper for lunch and juicy, moist steak for dinner. She would try almost anything once unless it had shrimp in it. She had a shrimp allergy. Out of all cuisine I believe Mexican was her favorite. Who wouldn't like all that cheese? Succulent, decadent, spicy, smooth were adjectives used in Pope's reviews, which meant the food was exceptionally good. When she wasn't even food, she was talking chop with chefs. She has introduced us to chefs just starting out, teen chef Chase Bailey, to seasoned celebrity chefs like Marcus Samuelsson. Her other favorite past time is going to food festival like the annual Sugar Land Wine & Food Affair. If it involves food, trust Yolanda has it covered, Second to her love of food was her love of cats. Yolanda was the cat's meow. If you didn't

know about Yolanda's great love of cats then you didn't know her at all. She spoiled Killer Bee and Patches (the name for her cats unapologetically. They were her children. Her Facebook page alone shows her adoration for her beloved cats, as there are a plethora of photos of her and her cat in various cuddle poses. Black cats are known to be unlucky. Not for Yolanda. I even think thought her cat love and her food love might have tied together. A true foodie to her heart, sharing her culinary adventures with others was pure enjoyment for her. Succulent, decadent, spicy, smooth were adjectives, if used in Pope's reviews, meant the food was exceptionally good. This meant Pope's stomach was happy and full. Even though she was known as a writer in her later years, she had an entirely different career when she first started out. A native Houstonian,

Yolanda stayed close to home to get her education. She earned a BBA degree from The University of Houston and a Montessori Teaching Diploma in Lower Elementary Education from The North American Montessori Center. She taught reading, essay and creative writing and was a private language tutor. She also was an English Second Language Tutor for many years. The native Houstonian was a veteran of The United States Navy Reserves, a published poet and writer with Longridge Writers Group. In addition, she was experienced in Corporate Training: Microsoft Office Products & Business Communications. Moreover, Yolanda facilitated Creative Writing Workshops for The Houston Public Library, The Sugar Land Public Library & Rogers Elementary School. HARRIS COUNTY WILL PAY $100 TO GET YOUR FIRST DOSE OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
M
Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo with U.S. Rep. Al Green (left)
In an effort to improve vaccination rates and better protect the residents of Harris County from COVID-19, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) will provide $100 cash cards to residents receiving their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at an HCPH vaccination site. In order to receive the $100 cash card, residents will have to sign a waiver prior to the vaccination and remain in the post-vaccination waiting area at an HCPH vaccination site for the 15to-30 minutes recommended.
Vaccinations at HCPH sites are free and no appointment is required. To find one near you, click here. If you prefer to make an appointment, go to vacstrac. hctx.net or call 832-927-8787. Face coverings will be required for individuals seeking a vaccination and we urge residents to take additional COVID-19 prevention measures such as maintain social distancing, staying at home as much as possible and continue regularly washing their hands.
Parents must accompany their children, ages 12-17, to be vaccinated or children must bring a consent form signed by their parent or guardian. Consent forms can be found via vacstrac.hctx.net and 12 to 17-year-olds are eligible for the Pfizer vaccine. Adults over the age of 17 can choose from three vaccines: the one-dose Johnson & Johnson and the multi-dose Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Fully vaccinated people have the greatest protection against the Delta Variant. So far, 63% percent of Harris County residents have had one vaccine dose, however the current positivity rate for HCPH is more than 20% and hospitals across Harris County are overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases. The vaccine is the best tool we have in mitigating both the spread and impact of COVID-19 and we urge residents to do their part by getting vaccinated and encouraging others to do the same. Residents in need of their second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine can also receive one at an HCPH vaccination site. Proof of their 1st dose to verify the type of vaccine will be required. For residents who feel they need to be tested for COVID-19, we encourage residents to sign up for a COVID-19 test by calling 832-927-7575. For more information on the Bethune Empowerment Center,

EPA ANNOUNCES HOUSTON ONCE AGAIN TOPS LIST
T
By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
he City of Houston announced Wednesday that it continues to rank as No. 1 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) National Top 30 Local Government List of the largest municipal green power users from the Green Power Partnership (GPP). Houston has maintained its leadership role in renewables for many years, first receiving this recognition in 2014. Since July 1, 2020, all City of Houston municipal facilities use are powered by 100% renewable energy. Houston's annual green-power usage tops 1 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), more than any other local government in the United States. This was accomplished in partnership with NRG, the City's retail electric provider. The City could realize $65 million in savings over the seven year contract. Altogether, the City has reduced its effective direct carbon emissions

by 85% since 2005. Houston is also No. 19 on EPA’s Top 100 List of the largest green power users. Houston’s choice to use green power helps advance the voluntary market for green power, as well as the development of those sources. "This is a great news for the city of Houston and, by extension, for the rest of the world," said Mayor Sylvester Turner, who also serves as chair of U.S. Climate Mayors. "We are going big to set the example for cities around the world. If 100% renewable energy can happen in Houston, it can happen in any other city." By moving the needle in the voluntary green power market, Houston and other Green Power Partners are helping to reduce the negative health impacts of air emissions including those related to ozone, fine

"This list of the largest users of green power across the nation is proof that good business practices can also benefit the environment,” said James Critchfield, Program Manager of EPA's Green Power Partnership. “EPA applauds the leading organizations in the Green Power Partnership’s Top Partner Rankings for their notable commitment to expanding their use of green power and protecting the environment.” According to the U.S. EPA, Houston’s green power use of more than 1 billion kWh is equivalent to the annual electricity use of more than 94,000 average American homes.

M
ayor Sylvester Turner and state leaders highlighted President Biden and Democrat efforts for the American people on the creation of more than four million new jobs, tax cuts for middle-class families and lower health care costs Wednesday at the DNC’s “Build Back Better” bus tour in Houston. The mayor thanked the Biden-Harris administration as he welcomed the bus to Houston. He noted that 2020 was a very painful time for a lot of families throughout the United States and said since Biden has taken office, his administration has helped provide additional relief with the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Turner said families in Houston and Harris County have benefited from the act by allowing local officials to provide rental and utility assistance to those in need. He said because of the ARPA, the city’s emergency rental assistance program provided funds to more than 45,000 households during the pandemic. He said the act has provided more money than any other program in the U.S. Alvarado also thanked the Biden administration for touring and not rallying. She also thanked the administration for the infrastructure bill that will benefit her district in the East End.
“I’m proud to join my Democratic colleagues because I know that President Biden and the Democratic Party are committed to improving the lives of all Americans and increasing access to equality and affordable health care,” Alvarado said. She noted that Biden has taken swift action within his six months with more than 2 million Americans signing up for health care in Texas. Brailey thanked Turner and Alvarado for helping make Houston a better place. She also wished Texas Gov. Greg Abbott a speedy recovery as he battles COVID-19. Brailey said under Biden’s administration and Democrat leadership in the past six months, the economy has gone from creating only 6,000 new jobs a month to creating 60,000 jobs every three days, adding a record-shattering 4 million jobs. “Democrats are going to create even more good jobs for working folks and keep our economy growing strong,” Bailey said.

ENTERTAINMENT: LIZZO TEARFULLY CALLS OUT 'FATPHOBIC' AND 'RACIST' HATE FOLLOWING 'RUMORS' RELEASE By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
L
izzo broke down in tears over racist and fat-phobic comments she received after dropping her new song “Rumors,” featuring Cardi B. “Sometimes I feel like the world just don’t love me back. It’s like, it doesn’t matter how much positive energy you put into the world. You’re still going to have people who have something mean to say about you,” Lizzo, 33, sobbed during an Instagram Live on Sunday. She continued, “I just feel like I’m seeing negativity directed towards me in the most weirdest way, like, people saying s–t about me that just doesn’t even make sense. It’s fat-phobic and it’s racist and it’s hurtful.” The “Truth Hurts” artist explained that while she’s grateful for Cardi B and Atlantic Records and everyone who helped her with the song, she expressed that she was “overwhelmed.” “For the people who are just always going to have something negative to say about me that’s nothing to do with music, or content of my character, or me as an artist, and just have everything to do with my body or whatever trope you think I fall into, suck my p—y from behind ’cause y’all motherf–kers gonna be the main ones catching up,” she said. Lizzo also clarified that her music is not meant to appease the public and what they expect of her. “I’m not making music for white people, I’m not making music for anybody. I’m a black woman making music. I make black music, period,” she said. “I’m not serving anyone but myself. Everyone is invited to a Lizzo show, to a Lizzo song, to this good energy. Everyone’s invited.” She added, “I’m doing this shit for the big black women in the future who just want to live their lives without being scrutinized or put into boxes. I’m not gonna do what y’all want me to do, ever, so get used to it. But what I will do is make great music and be a great artist and continue to uplift people and uplift myself.”
Pictured: Lizzo and Cardi B. Lizzo cried over a wave of hateful comments following the release of her latest single, admitting to fans on Instagram Live "it's hurtful." Courtesy of Alexx Mayo The twerking flutist asserted that she was going to only “focus on the positive comments” moving forward. “I don’t have time for your negativity, your internalized self-hatred that you project onto me with your racism and your fat-phobia. I don’t have time for it,” she said. “Anyways, Imma continue to be me. Imma continue to be a bad bitch … ’bout to go to some bad bitch s–t.
‘Bout to go make some bad bitch money, and y’all stream ‘Rumors.'” Lizzo, wiping her tears away with a tissue, ended the video by telling fans that she was “OK” and thanked those who have shown her support, love and acceptance. “Thank you, I love you, as much as you
love yourself, and I hope that you love yourself a lot,” she said.

FASHION: DESIGNER TELFAR CREATED LIBERIA'S OLYMPIC UNIFORMS

elfar Clemens, made popular for designing of 'Bushwick Birkin', debuted his Opening Ceremony collection with the help of three members of the Liberian National Team — Emmanuel Matadi, Joseph Fahnbulleh and Ebony Morrison — with Clemens himself appearing at the event as the country's flag-bearer. Not only that, but in addition to this being the independent, Black-owned and non-gendered label's first foray into athletic performance wear, the brand is also acting as the sole sponsor of Liberia's team, who previously had to "scrounge for sponsorships before almost every Games," according to The New York Times. But how exactly did this amazing yet unexpected collaboration come to be? Well, it turns out that the team decided to reach out after Matadi learned that Clemens is Liberian American. As a result, the Brooklyn-based designer ended up creating 8 athletic and 28 casual pieces — "for travel and life in the village," per a press release — all of which feature the lone star of Liberia's flag and a new Pan-African-Performance symbol that's expected to appear in the brand's upcoming NYFW show. However, the personal story behind the meaningful partnership is just as beautiful as the outfits themselves. For context, Clemens' family immigrated to the US in 1990

Needless to say, Clemens started sketching out ideas while finding design inspiration in Liberia, all of which eventually led to a collection of clothes reflective of Liberia's history as a country meant to provide freedom and opportunity for Black people from the Americas. So while the Liberian National

join the golf team. The NCAA allows student-athletes five years to compete in four seasons. Because Smith never took advantage of playing collegiate basketball, he still retains all of his eligibility. “Ray Allen kind of convinced me. We had a little golf trip in [the Dominican Republic], and he was talking about some of the things he was doing, about going back to school and challenging yourself for us athletes. I really took heed to it and decided to go back -- and one of the best liberal studies programs is at A&T,” said Smith. Now 35-year-old Smith plans to play with the Aggies golf team in addition to pursuing his studies. Richard Watkings, A&T golf coach for both the women’s and men’s teams, said Smith joining the roster is pivotal for the HBCU. “It’s a big deal for A&T. It’s a big deal for him. It’s not very often that somebody in his position really has an opportunity to have a thought, a dream, an idea, and to be able to go ahead and move in that direction,” said Watkins. The golf season for the Aggies begins in spring 2022. Congratulations, J.R. Because of you, we can! Photo Courtesy of Tracy Wilcox/PGA Tour
TRAVEL: MARTHA'S VINEYARD BLACK INKWELL BEACH By DeAnna Taylor, Travel Noire Staff – Newswire
#05 on the Houston Style Magazine bucket list: Polar Bear at the Inkwell Beach!
O
n August 12, 2021 at 7:30am, 164 people gathered at the shore of Martha’s Vineyard historically Black, Inkwell Beach in Oak Bluffs. The group, mostly consisting of Black travelers who visit the historical beach often, ranged in age from 18 all the way to 70+. Together, at the direction of the group leader Ms. Caroline Hunter (who has been taking the plunge for nearly 30 years), they all took the walk into the chilly waters— going in at least shoulder deep first. They then spent nearly an hour in the water doing water aerobics, and mostly just taking in the historical moment through fellowship. This “polar bear plunge” isn’t new. In fact, it has been happening every day— between Memorial Day and Labor Day— since 1947. This one, however, set the record for the most people in attendance. The last record-breaking dip brought about 120 people, including comedian Cedric The Entertainer. According to The Vineyard Gazette, the tradition began in the late 40s when nine guests of Black innkeeper Myrtle O’Brien began going down to Inkwell Beach to swim. This was a time when segregation was very heavy, but many Black travelers felt safe at Inkwell beach. The original nine started as a group of avid Black swimmers who would go from the Inkwell to a nearby ship deck, and back. The name, the Inkwell, was originally a derogatory reference given by nearby white beach goers because of the number of Black people that swam in the beach in the late nineteenth century. And, according to Blackpast.org, it is now the most famous of beaches across the U.S. to transform this odious nickname into an emblem of pride. “The basic premise of the Polar Bears,” Judge Redd said to the Vineyard Gazette, “is that we’re hopeful. We’re an optimistic, very, very positive group. And it’s a positive reinforcement. You’ll come down, and the most negative thing in the water is, isn’t this a great day? Isn’t this a blessing? You can always come down for some positive reinforcement, even in the midst of this
pandemic pessimism.” Today, thousands of travelers make their way to the beach to take part in the polar bear circle. For all newbies, they are issued a card as a token of remembrance for their part in such a special moment. Many of the long time polar bear members are also Howard University alums, and it has become a big tradition for fellow HU alums, and other HBCUs, to visit the area during the month of August. The polar bears are an inclusive group. While it was started by and currently sees mostly Black people, they have seen a small trickle of non-Black supporters coming throughout the years to participate, mostly out of curiosity. “Everybody is welcome,” Dr. Frances Gaskin said to the Gazette. “It started with nine people, but it evolved over the years. It just continued to get larger.” Record-breaking plunge Charlotte-based traveler Winston Robinson and his wife, Quiana, took the trip to Martha’s Vineyard and Inkwell Beach at the suggestion of a friend and Howard University Alum. They were a part of the record-breaking circle, and for them, it was a life-changing experience. If you search the hashtag, #inkwellbeach on Instagram, you will find dozens of photos of Black men and women who have also joined in the historic Polar Bear circle. It is truly a beautiful sight. You can learn more about the group through the Facebook Page, Martha’s Vineyard Oaks Bluff ‘Inkwell’ Polar Bears.
