COMMENTARY

Georgia Voters Will Decide O

By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

n January 5, Georgia voters will decide the runoff for their two U.S. Senate seats. Their votes will determine whether Republicans retain control of the Senate or whether Democrats gain a 50-50 tie, with Vice President Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote. The race is a microcosm of America’s struggle to find a way forward and of Georgia and the South’s struggle to build a new South. The two Democratic challengers reflect the new age still waiting to be born. Rev Raphael Warnock, senior pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, the congregation led by the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., is a distinguished heir to the King tradition. Thirty-three-year-old Jon Ossoff, educated at Georgetown and the London School of Economics, was born and raised in Atlanta, interned for the late Rep. John Lewis and served as a national security staffer to Rep. Hank Johnson. He has been CEO of Insight TWI, a London based documentary maker that focuses on detailing corruption in foreign countries. Both Rev Warnock and Ossoff have put forth a moderate platform for change. Both support immediate action to forestall an economic collapse as the pandemic spikes. With Republicans blocking action in the Senate, millions now face an end to unemployment insurance, an end to the eviction moratorium - with one-third of households behind on their rent or mortgages, and an end to the student debt moratorium, with millions of young people still struggling to find jobs. Without assistance, states and localities will be forced to cut services and lay off employees like teachers and firefighters. Both Warnock and Ossoff

4

support strengthening the Affordable Care Act, by adding a public option and reducing prescription drug prices but oppose Medicare for All. Both call for bold action to deal with the reality of catastrophic climate change but oppose the Green New Deal. Both are for lifting the minimum wage, and for assistance to small businesses. Their Republican opponents are the sitting senators - Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. Both are multimillionaires. Both were charged with insider trading, selling stocks after receiving private briefings on the threat posed by the pandemic. Both dubiously claimed that their advisers made the trades without their knowledge. Both tout themselves as Donald Trump supporters. They oppose the Affordable Care Act, and support alternatives that would leave hundreds of thousands of Georgians without health care. Both, lavishly supported by oil and gas interests, refuse to consider climate change a major threat. Loeffler, the co-owner of the Atlanta Dream, a women’s professional basketball team, loudly denounced support given to the Black Lives Matter movement, leading her players to wear T-shirts saying Vote Warnock. Neither Perdue nor Loeffler bother to offer a serious agenda to address the problems that Georgians face. They joined Republican leader Mitch McConnell in blocking the rescue act in the midst of the pandemic. Loeffler and Perdue won’t admit that Joe Biden won the presidential election, nor that he won Georgia. Adopting Donald Trump’s baseless claims of fraud, they wrote a joint letter calling for the resignation of the Georgia secretary of state, a conservative Republican supporter of Donald Trump. He

REV. RAPHAEL WARNOCK scorned the demand as “laughable.” What isn’t laughable is the long lines that black voters had to suffer in order to cast a vote in the primaries and November election. For years, Georgia - controlled by Republicans - has passed various measures to suppress the votes of minorities and the young, including gerrymandering districts, requiring photo ID, aggressive purging of voter rolls, and more. Notably, as the electorate has grown by over 2 million in the last seven years, Georgia has reduced the number of voting places by 10 percent. This has had a disproportionate effect on young and nonwhite voters whose registrations have surged. The contrasting campaigns make it clear that a vote for Loeffler or Perdue is a vote for continued dysfunction and obstruction. A victory by either would further commit Republicans to Donald Trump’s toxic use of race-based division, lies and calumnies to divide working people, gaining victories for those who serve the rich and corporations. Two of the wealthiest senators, Loeffler and Perdue personify the con. Neither America nor Georgia can move forward until the growing

JON OSSOFF majority that is desperate for change overcomes the systematic efforts to divide and suppress. This country cannot begin to address the threats it faces - the pandemic, the economic collapse, corrosive and extreme inequality, catastrophic climate change, racial inequity, growing insecurity and a declining middle class - until those standing in the way are defeated. Loeffler says the “future of the country is at stake on January 5.” Of her many delusions, that one may be the closest to the truth. You can write to the Rev. Houston City Council Approves $10 Million Boost To Small Business Economic Relief Program (SBERP)

M

By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

ayor Sylvester Turner and City Council approved $10 million in additional funding for the City’s Small Business Economic Relief Program (SBERP), bringing the total allocation of CARES Act 2020 dollars used to fund the program to $35 million. Launched in August and with an application deadline that closed in September, the program has provided grant assistance to small businesses and chambers of commerce that have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Grant recipients have included microbusinesses with five or less employees and those who did not receive any financial assistance from other relief programs such as the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) or the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). “A business may use the funds for payroll, accounts payable, rent, mortgage, personal protective equipment (PPE) for employees, and marketing strategies, including creating an online presence and other sales alternatives,”

said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “The City of Houston knows the pandemic has created challenges for many small businesses, and we want to help them survive until things get better.” Of more than 12,000 applications received by the City, there are still 3,000 applications under review and awaiting potential funding. The maximum amount a business or chamber can receive from the SBERP is $50,000. To date, the average grant amount approved has been $29,228.

The Application Deadline Is Not Being Extended “There are so many more small businesses in need of assistance, and our goal has always been for this program to make the most impact and to reach as many people as possible,” said Marsha E. Murray, Director of the Office of Business Opportunity, whose office worked to develop the program. “With the extra funding, more small businesses

can remain open and pay their employees through the New Year.” This additional allocation of CARES Act dollars is set to be awarded by the end of December 2020 using a weighted scoring matrix that will be used to ensure the equitable distribution of grant funds. SBERP applications are prioritized based on several factors, including geography, employee makeup, access to capital challenges, years in business, and demonstrated resiliency. The first half of the funds will be awarded upon grant approval, while the second half will be given after completion of the Recovery and Resiliency component of the program. This component is meant to ensure businesses that receive grant funds have a higher likelihood of surviving the pandemic.

Pope Francis Suggest Building Bonds Of Reciprocity For Solidarity By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

Pope Francis Pope Francis is, as the Bishop of Rome, the Head of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of the Vatican City State. Francis is the first Jesuit Pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first Pope from outside Europe since the Syrian Gregory III, who reigned in the 8th century.

A

common phrase that I have heard since the pandemic started is the need for something better to be birth from it. Whether that is a new skill, career opportunity, cleaner environment, the desired outcome was always to be better or something to be made better. Pope Francis wrote an op-ed for the New York Times with this same air of the world and its residents being better coming out of this pandemic. His thoughts were that people would be better by being more connected to each other on a personal level and being less selfish to be more empathic to one’s pain. This could make kinder people and a kinder, more understanding world. Before the good there is always the bad. In his article, Pope Francis criticized the United States government (without actually blatantly saving the name) for their response to the COVID crisis of putting political power over the needs of people amid the rising number of deaths that has hit way past the one million mark. He further criticized groups that support this unsafe logic by protesting rules of wearing masks, social distancing, stay-at-home orders, and travel restrictions as an invasion of their personal freedoms. Pope Francis faulted the government and the people in protest for lack of empathy and advised they should look for the good and not the bad as it relates to issues. “Looking to the common good is much more than the sum of what is good for individuals. It means having a regard for all citizens and seeking to respond effectively to the needs of the least fortunate,” said Pope Francis. At an early age, Pope Francis learned how to find that common good as well as how it intertwined with the role that science plays in healing people. A date etched in the mind of Pope Francis is August 13, 1957. On this day, he became ill with a type of flu that

266TH POPE FRANCIS Full Name: Jorge Mario Bergolio Elected: March 13, 2013 Date Of Birth: December 17, 1936 (age 83 years.) Nationality/City Born: Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina Parents Name: Regina Maria Sivori, Mario Jose Bergoglio

was so severe in nature it required hospitalization for him. He had difficulty breathing so a hefty amount of water was removed from his lungs and part of the right lobe of his lungs was removed. However, that was not the only care administered in which to save his life. Usually, the knowledge of doctors is credited to saving one’s life but for Pope Francis he credits nurses. Nurses Cornelia Caraglio and Micaela, using previous patient care experiences, followed their instincts to increase his medication dosage beyond what doctors had prescribed. Their examples of empathy and knowledge with experience and the toughest of his illness taught him “to depend on the goodness and wisdom of others.” Really this experience helped shaped the work that Pope Francis does today and further grew his desire to help others. “In lockdown I’ve often gone in prayer to those who sought all means to save the lives of others. So many of the nurses, doctors and caregivers paid that price of love, together with priests, and religious and ordinary people whose vocations were service. We return their love by grieving for them and honoring them,” said Pope Francis as he pointed out the lesson today’s frontline workers are teaching the world. “It is better to live a shorter life serving others than a longer one resisting that call.” In order to come out of the pandemic better than when we started we all must change. We need to stop thinking globally. That is too broad for people to connect to. It leaves some feelings that problem is too big and too far reaching for them to help. Pope Francis thinks having a closer human connection to people’s problems puts their issues in our faces and forces us to deal with it, hopefully in a positive way. Looking at our world, COVID-19 is just one of the problems

December 03 – December 09, 2020

www.StyleMagazine.com

the nation is up against. There are the problems of systemic racism, immigration, climate change, and so on. “These tragedies may seem distant from us, as part of the daily news that, sadly, fails to move us to change our agendas and priorities. But like the Covid-19 crisis, they affect the whole of humanity.” Pope Francis calls people to “dream big, to rethink our priorities — what we value, what we want, what we seek — and to commit to act in our daily life on what we have dreamed of.” To achieve dreams of good health, wealth, and the ideal life people need each other. Anyone who has reached the pinnacle of their goals will say that they did not get there alone. Someone believed their dream was possible. Someone pushed them when they wanted to give up. Someone was their sponsor when they had no funds. Someone was their board to bounce off ideas. Someone was their conscience, advisor, and biggest cheerleader. It is called solidarity. “What ties us to one another is what we commonly call solidarity. Solidarity is more than acts of generosity, important as they are; it is the call to embrace the reality that we are bound by bonds of reciprocity. On this solid foundation we can build a better, different, human future,” said Pope Francis. Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He is the 83-year-old the head of the Catholic Church and the bishop of Rome.

WN announced today that the network will expand its popular Friday night unscripted programming lineup with “Belle Collective” premiering Friday, January 15 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The new series from the producers behind the hit “Love & Marriage: Huntsville” centers on the personal and professional lives of five successful, glamourous boss women who are redefining what it means to be a southern belle in Jackson, Mississippi. These dynamic women represent Mississippi’s finest Black female entrepreneurs, determined to break ceilings – glass and otherwise – while shredding long-held stereotypes of the South. They must set aside their differences to redevelop a struggling mid-twentieth century historic district that was once known as the hub for Black-owned businesses. The five principal belles include:

· Dr. Antoinette Liles, one of the few

Black female dentists in the state. Dr. Liles is navigating a recent divorce and opening her very own dental practice.

· Lateshia Pearson is the CEO of the

National Women’s Brunch Organization. Her brunches bring powerful women together and help promote self-empowerment, but now she has one goal in mind: to bring the ladies together to revitalize Farish Street, an iconic Black neighborhood in Jackson, Mississippi.

· Latrice Rogers is the young master-

mind and entrepreneur behind Goddess Lengths, the most successful hair care emporium in the region.

TARZ Original series “Power Book II: Ghost will return on Sunday, December 6 at 8PM ET/ PT on STARZ in the U.S. and Canada, also airing day and date on the Starzplay international streaming service across Europe, Latin America and Japan. Prior to the mid-season premiere on December 6, STARZ will air the first five episodes of “Power Book II: Ghost” back-to-back, starting at 2:45 PM ET/PT. The series garnered 8.4 million multi-platform viewers in its premiere week back in September, becoming the most-watched new series premiere on STARZ. It drove a 42% lift in acquisition on the Starz App and 36% higher viewership than the premiere of “Power” 601. “Power Book II: Ghost” premiered internationally on the Starzplay streaming service and was the service’s most successful launch ever in the UK. In the first five weeks after premiere in the UK, over 400% more viewers have watched “Power Book II: Ghost” than the prior top performer, and the series garnered unprecedented in season viewership growth that included a 50% increase between episode 101 and 105 in their respective first weeks, setting the all-time streaming record for an episode in its first week on the service. From the executive producers of “Power,”

this is the first series in the expanded “Power” Universe franchise. Next in line for the team will be “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” which is currently in production in New York City, and “Power Book IV: Force.” “Power Book II: Ghost” picks up shortly after the earth-shattering events of “Power” as Tariq St. Patrick grapples with a new world order: his father dead and his mother, Tasha, facing charges for the murder her son committed. Not to mention the academic rigors of the Ivy League university Tariq is attending to earn his inheritance. Truly on his own for the first time in his life, Tariq is forced to split his time between school and hustling to pay for Davis MacLean, the fame-hungry defense lawyer who is Tasha’s only hope of getting out of jail and escaping prosecution by newly minted U.S. Attorney Cooper Saxe. better options, Tariq turns to the familiar drug game, entangling himself with a cutthroat family headed by Monet Stewart Tejada, that’s been at it far longer than him. As Tariq tries to balance his drug operation with his grades, love life, and family, he figures out that the only way to avoid the same fate his father met is to become him — only better. “Power Book II: Ghost” is executive produced by series creator and showrunner Courtney A. Kemp through her company End of Episode, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson through his G-Unit Film and Television, and Mark Canton through his Atmosphere Entertainment MM. End of Episode’s Chris Selak and Danielle De Jesus, Shana Stein and Bart Wenrich continue executive producing. Lionsgate TV produces the series for STARZ. JANICE WEAVER – Seventh Year Anniversary Blood Drive: SURVIVING – THRIVING & MOBILIZING

D

uring this 2020 holiday season, many are concerned and focused on preparing a festive time for family and friends. However, some will be helping to provide a much-needed service to others by “Giving the Gift of Life” in a season of sharing. Janice Weaver, well known community activist, is one who has an overwhelming story to share. In 2012, after attending her Sunday morning church service, she was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed, after several tests, as having a rare disease called “Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura” or TTP, which is a fatal disorder when blood clots form subsequently causing a lower number of platelets resulting in brain damage, a stroke or even death. Janice was very fortunate to survive and had to receive 500 units of plasma freeze after 29 days in the hospital in quarantine to save her life. This rare disease can be inherited as well as acquired and not known to many who become victims. As a result of her journey, Janice has committed to helping others by increasing the overall awareness about this rarely known TTP disease. She immediately began hosting an annual blood drive for the community which is scheduled Friday. Mayor Sylvester Turner along with Houston “first responders”, who unselfishly put themselves in harm’s way to protect and help others, will be honored during the annual blood drive for “First Responders Day of Appreciation” @ 11:00 a.m. The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will conduct the blood drive and many
