COMMENTARY

Georgia’s Long History Of Voter Suppression N

By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

ow that Donald Trump’s baseless lies about voter fraud have been summarily dismissed by the courts, perhaps some attention can be paid to the true threat to free and fair elections: not voter fraud but systemic and massive voter suppression. Voter suppression, not voter fraud, could have critically important effects in Senate runoff elections in Georgia that will determine which party controls the majority in the U.S. Senate. In Georgia, voting rights groups, including the Rainbow Push Coalition and the Black Votes Matter Fund, have filed a lawsuit challenging the wrongful purge of nearly 200,000 voters from the voting rolls over the last two years. We are seeking, with the aid of counsel provided by the National Bar Association, injunctive relief to reinstate these voters prior to the January 5 Senate runoff races. As a September report from the Georgia American Civil Liberties Union states, the voters purged are likely to be “young voters, voters of lower income and citizens of racial groups that have been denied their sacred right to vote in the past.” With Republicans in control of the state, it isn’t surprising that these are voters who are likely to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats. Nor is it surprising that the state chose not to use a licensee of the U.S. Postal Service -- as required by law -- to carry out the mailing designed to confirm that the voters were no longer at the address. Instead, it was done by a one-person firm located in Nebraska. An independent analysis of

4

over 300,000 voters purged from the rolls after 2018 showed that over 60 percent wrongfully lost their right to vote because of an incorrect assumption that they had changed their address. Too often, these voters never discover that they have been purged until the time to vote when it is too late. The ACLU and Greg Palast, the independent investigator who discovered the wrongful purges, tried repeatedly to get the Georgia Secretary of State to agree to meet to review the proof of unjustified purges. After receiving no reply, voting rights groups decided that we had no choice but to file the lawsuit. Georgia has a long history of voter suppression, dating back to the post-Civil War period when the Ku Klux Klan used widespread violence to intimidate black and Republican voters in order to re-establish white supremacy. Georgia was one of the states that perfected Jim Crow laws to limit black votes. Now, as Reverend William Barber II notes, “Jim Crow did not retire; he went to law school and launched a second career. Meet James Crow, Esquire.” Georgia has employed all of the modern techniques of voter suppression. It has closed polling places disproportionately in areas of black concentration, forcing voters to wait in lines for hours to cast a vote. It has repeatedly purged the voting rolls, striking far more voters off than the average state across the country. It required “exact match” voter signatures on registrations, with up to 80 percent of those disqualified people of color (a lawsuit brought that ploy largely

December 17 – December 23, 2020

to an end in 2019). When Republicans assumed total control of the state in 2010, the resulting gerrymandering was, as Rep. John Lewis stated, “an affront to the spirit and the letter of the Voting Rights Act.” What has been happening in Georgia has been happening in states under Republican control across the country. Increasingly a minority party in a diverse and young nation, Republicans have been perfecting ways to gain power without capturing a majority of the votes. In Georgia, a hearing on the lawsuit -- backed by a record of independent and authoritative expert analysis of the voters purged from the rolls -- was slated for December 10. Hopefully, this injustice can be corrected before the runoff in January. Donald Trump’s false claims about voter fraud have captured the front pages and immediate attention of courts across the land. Ironically, the authoritative challenge to brazen voter suppression has received far less

www.StyleMagazine.com

attention. In Georgia and elsewhere, it will take constant attention, citizen mobilization and litigation to challenge the increasingly sophisticated efforts to suppress the vote.

Mayor Turner Applauds Houston Methodist and Other Area Hospitals For Transparent COVID-19 Vaccination Process By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

M

ayor Sylvester Turner joined Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Houston Methodist Hospital CEO and President Marc Boom Tuesday to learn more about the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and observe the first wave of healthcare workers receive vaccinations. After touring the vaccination room and speaking with doctors and nurses about the process, the mayor commended Methodist Hospital for its work during the pandemic and for being among the first area hospitals to inoculate frontline staff. “Even in the midst of the storm, there is still a rainbow in the sky, and today, we saw that rainbow over the City of Houston sky,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “People trust their healthcare providers and seeing them get the vaccine sends a positive message throughout the City of Houston.” The Texas Department of State Health Services announced that seven hospitals in the Texas Medical Center would receive a vaccine shipment this

week. MD Anderson Cancer Center was the first area hospital to receive a vaccine shipment on December 14. Texas Children’s Hospital Main, LBJ Hospital, CHI St. Luke Health, Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center, Houston Methodist Hospital, and Ben Taub General Hospital received vaccine shipments on December 15. According to the State, frontline health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities are the first groups to be vaccinated, and the State’s Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel will make recommendations about subsequent groups. It will take a matter of months to manufacture and distribute enough vaccine for everyone who wants to be vaccinated. Until then, the Mayor and Houston Health Department are encouraging people to continue to do their part by wearing a mask and maintaining a social distance while around people they don’t live with, staying home when possible, and frequently washing their hands.

Mayor Sylvester Turner and Houston Council Members Dave Martin and Edward Pollard “I encourage every single Houstonian to take the vaccine when the opportunity arrives. As a city, we are in this together, and as a city, we will overcome the challenges of 2020 and remain vigilant and hopeful for 2021,” said Mayor Turner. The mayor plans to

New Study Indicates COVID-19 Rates 4-Times Higher Than Reported In Houston By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com

C

OVID-19 cases seem to be four times higher than reported according to a new study from the Houston Health Department. Through a partnership with Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University, volunteers’ blood from Houston area households was subject to random viral testing for COVID-19 antibodies. COVID-19 antibodies are seen in individuals who previously had the coronavirus. Testing of the volunteers showed that approximately 250,000 people had the virus by September 19 but reports from the same time frame show only 57,000 people were infected. “Transparency is a critical part of our mission during the pandemic and our goal is to keep the public informed about the COVID-19 infection rate and how people can practice safe and healthy habits,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “This information, combined with findings from the department’s wastewater testing, PCR clinical case surveillance system and other programs, analyzed with advanced data science

6

techniques, gives us invaluable insight to precisely target testing and educational resources to help save lives.” Over 600 people from 420 households were tested virally on September 8-19. Each provided a blood sample and answered several questions. Results show that more women than men were infected with the virus. It is no surprised that minorities were heavily hit by the virus than others. The city says that minority virus rates were higher in Hispanics (18%) and Blacks (15%) compared to non-Hispanic Whites (5%). Rates were also higher for those under the age of 40 at 17% compared to those over 40 at 9%. “We used two labs to verify results and we are confident this data gives us reliable new information on the extent of the spread of this virus in our community,” said Dr. Loren Hopkins, chief environmental science officer for the Houston Health Department. “Along with tracking virus spread, the survey will provide insight on how much antibodies were made

December 17 – December 23, 2020

and how long they last over a 4-month interval (short-term duration) in blood circulation. In addition, the survey may help identify short-term immunity after infection,” said Dr. Pedro Piedra, professor of molecular virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine. This study is phase one of the ongoing project. Phase two of the project is planned to begin in January. The same volunteers that participated in phase one will again be re-tested to learn the number of antibodies still in the blood. In addition, a set of new volunteers will be tested. “This antibody testing investigation is a wonderful example of a partnership between academics and a local health department to answer key questions together about a pandemic that is poorly understood,” said Dr. Elaine Symanski professor in the Center for Precision Environmental Health and Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. “It would not have been possible without the critical involvement of Houstonians

Care Nursing at Long Island Jewish Medical Center – Lives in Queens, New York – Received shot shortly after 9:20 am on December 14, 2020 – Dr. Michelle Chester, the corporate director of employee health services at Northwell Health, delivered the shot – Received Pfizer Vaccine

W

hen Sandra Lindsay volunteered to be vaccinated for COVID-19 she had one goal in mind – to lead by example. Lindsay, Director of Critical Nursing at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, had heard all the skepticism of others leery about taking the vaccine. She also was well aware of the history of unjust, racist treatment of African Americans with medical experimentation. “It was important for me,” Lindsay said in a previous interview,

“and especially to send a message to the minority community - Hispanics, Latinos, Blacks - who are usually grossly affected but still have mistrust based on history.” Her actions are inspiring and encouraging to others, even reaching to her homeland of Jamaica. Hopefully, the spirit will also spread to the U.S. among minorities. Lindsay’s job had her working on the floor in the hospital with COVID-19 patients. She saw the suffering, pain and death up close of patients. In addition, the grief of death brushed her own doorstep when her uncle and aunt died from COVID-19. The 52-year-old received the Pfizer vaccine on December 14th shortly after 9:20 a.m. administered by Dr. Michelle Chester, the corporate director of employee health services at Northwell Health. Lindsay reported that she didn’t feel any different after receiving the vaccine.

I

f you’re overdue, it’s time to renew! The temporary waiver of certain vehicle title and registration requirements, announced by Governor Greg Abbott on March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will end on April 14, 2021. If you have not renewed your expired vehicle registration, you should make plans to renew by that date. It is not necessary to wait until the deadline to complete any overdue transactions as motorists have several renewal options. Three ways to renew your vehicle registration: Online: Visit http://www.TxDMV.gov or www.Texas.gov. This is the quickest and least expensive way to renew. Mail: Return the bottom portion of your registration renewal form, payment and other required information to your county tax assessor-collector. In Person: Visit the office of your county tax assessor-collector. In many counties, in-person renewal is also available at other locations, such as certain grocery stores. The expiring temporary waiver covers the following services: Initial vehicle registration. Vehicle registration renewal. Vehicle titling. Renewal of disabled parking placards. 30-day temporary permits.

L

il Wayne found himself in the court of law once again. The rapper is being hit with an illegal gun possession charge from a prior felony conviction where he was charged for having a gold-plated, .45-caliber handgun that he carried on private flight coming from California. When he was arrested in December 2019, Wayne told officers that the gun was not his. In addition, his lawyers said that Wayne never fired the firearm. “The charge is that because he was convicted of a felony in the past, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm,” attorney Howard Srebnick said according to CNN. The previous felony hanging over Wayne’s head is from a case in October 2009, where he entered a guilty plea. Wayne was arrested outside New York City’s Beacon Theater where he

had a .40-caliber pistol. He was charged with felony gun possession and took a deal with New York prosecutors. Although Wayne said the pistol was not his own, he served eight months of a one-year prison sentence. This previous conviction prevents Wayne from possessing guns under federal law. For this recent court case, Wayne has entered a guilty plea according to the Miami federal court. “The federal sentencing guidelines call for substantially lower and I would not look at the maximum exposure to decide anyone’s sentence and all the facts need to be thoroughly reviewed,” Ronald Richards, another attorney for the musician, said in November. Sentencing is scheduled for January 28, 2021.

Praire View A&M University Receives $50 Million Donation – Largest In Its 144-Year History By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com

Dr. Ruth J. Simmons – President PVAMU

P

rairie View A&M University will be able to produce a lot more productive people thanks to a $50 million donation from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. “Those funds remain designated for financial aid and will continue to be disbursed to students over the next several years, supplementing other forms of financial aid,” said Dr. Ruth Simmons, university president. Simmons was completely caught off guard by the donation. Simmons and Scott had numerous conversations about other issues and never hinted at the generous gift. The $50 million is the largest ever in the 144year history of the university and is also the largest donation any HBCU has received. Scott gave Prairie View A&M the donation to use as they pleased. Officials already have a plan on how they will spend the money. Ruth J. Simmons, President of Prairie View, commented, “This is a historic gift for Prairie View, coming at a time when the University had already decided and begun to invest heavily in key areas to strengthen its academic programs and improve student success. The timing of this gift could, therefore, not be better.” Prairie View will use $10 million dollars to create the Panther Success Grant Program that will assist upperclassman in financial need due to COVID-19. According to the release, those funds remain designated for financial aid and will continue to be disbursed to students over the next several years, supplementing other forms of financial aid. A portion of the donation will also go towards financial aid for other students. In a press release, Prairie View indicated that a portion of the funds will go to the university’s

Billionaire Philanthropist endowment fund for university faculty, recruitment, scholarships, and fellowships. With Scott’s donation, the university increased their endowment by 40% to a tune close to $130 million. Prairie View now has the largest endowment at a Historically Black College or University (HBCUs). There is something extra special on “The Hill” as they have been the recipient of a number of sizable donations recently. Prairie View received $1 million for the Center for Race and Justice from HEB Chairman Charles Butt; $1.5 million from the Mellon Foundation for Afro-American Studies and faculty development; $1.5 million from Houston Endowment for the College of Education; $1 million from Bank of America for career services; $850,000 from Vistra, Inc., to improve educational opportunities for students, $2 million from community leader Shari Griswold for scholarships; and many more. Throughout this year Scott has surprised organizations with monetary gifts of almost $4.2 bil-

lion. According to CNN other HBCUs like Howard University ($40 million), Hampton University ($30 million), Tuskegee University ($20 million), Xavier University ($20 million), Morehouse College ($20 million), and Spelman College (has not disclosed the amount received) were additional benefactors of Scott’s fortune. These are some of the largest donations the universities have ever received. Scott has blessed close to 400 organizations with bountiful gifts including Black Girls CODE, RAINN, the Obama Foundation, and the European Climate Foundation. These donations are part of an agreement Scott signed called the Giving Pledge initiative in which she promised to donate a majority of her wealth.

Meet Justin G. Manuel, Jr. Young Author Of “What‘s Life?“ Follow Justin on Social Media Platforms @JustinGManuelJr

J

By Reginald Dominique – www.StyleMagazine.com

ustin G. Manuel Jr. is young and talented aspiring author from Houston, Texas. While always being a scholar in school, Justin started writing and drawing at the tender age of nine. He draws his inspirations from several places; however, the main influence behind his book, “What’s Life?” is his mother because, he says, “she always pushes me to a new rank of potential”. In “What’s Life?” you will see the perspective of a young goat who sets a goal to the highest mountain ever! As he encounters the animals with strong, clever, and courageous traits, they become as obstacles for the young goat. Yet, he will try his best to stride for the top. In an interview with Justin, we got a chance to talk about his inspirations, why he wanted to become an author, what we can expect from him in the future, and more. (RD): What other authors do you look up to? (JM): James Patterson & Jeff Kenny. I like them both because their stories always have a meaningful meaning attached. It’s very inspiring. (RD): Who would you consider your biggest influence? (JM): My mom is my influence for me to write the book. My 3rd, 4th & 6th grade teachers also are my influences.

(RD): Why did you decide to write a book? (JM): I decided to write the book because my mom opened my mind to more horizons and I’m very good at writing so, I didn’t want my talent to go to waste. (RD): What are your spare time hobbies when you’re writing or read? (JM): During my spare time activities I like to draw & play video games. (RD): Have you done any community activities? (JM): I actually just donated ten books for the Christmas holiday. There was a toy drive in my mom’s neighborhood that she grew up in that I donated books to. I also donated books to the “U.S. Marines Toys for Tots” & to “The Little Free Library”. I want to also give back by writing more inspirational books to the youth. (RD): Are there any messages you would like to sent to the youth? (JM): A message I would like to send to the youth is to stay positive and never give up on yourself. Justin is a level headed, very smart and talented young African-American author who has his goal set high and there is no denying that he can do anything that he puts his mind to. It is refreshing to see a young, educated boy who is working steadily to fulfil and objective that he has made for himself. At 15 years

Justin G Manuel, Jr. old, we are sure to see and hear so much more from this 9th grade, college preparatory student.
