COMMENTARY
Trump’s Banker Minion Prepares to Gut Consumer Watchdog By Jesse Jackson
“Personnel is policy,” says Gary Cohn, the former president of Goldman Sachs recently named to head President Trump’s National Economic Council. He got that right, and every working family should shudder that Trump -- after railing against the corruptions of Goldman Sachs and other big banks in the campaign -- has put six former Goldman Sachs bankers at the head of his economic team. Their first priority is to roll back bank regulation, and, as Gary Cohn told the Wall Street Journal, one of their first targets is to disembowel the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFBP). The CFPB was created in the Dodd-Frank banking reforms passed after the excesses of the banks helped blow up the economy. Led by Elizabeth Warren (then a Harvard Law professor, now a U.S. senator), consumer and civil rights groups pushed for it against the full force of the banking lobby. The agency’s sole mission is to protect consumers against the scams and schemes of fraudulent banks and lenders. Led by Richard Cordray, a former Ohio attorney general and treasurer, it has been a stunning success, recovering nearly $12 billion for 27 million consumers from the lenders who cheated or defrauded them. The CFPB is the champion of what Trump calls the forgotten working families of America. It has protected veterans and military families, recovering $100 million from lenders who preyed on them. It recovered over $480 million for students who were deceived by for-profit chains peddling fraudulent products. It has moved against the payday lenders that gouge low-wage workers. It is about to issue rules prohibiting payday loans with interest of 300 percent or more -- literally immoral loans that earn the Bible’s condemnation of usury. Seniors are often targets of financial frauds. Last year, a survey showed that nearly one in five citizens 65 and older had been “taken advantage of financially.” The CFPB has worked
POLITICAL
actively to shield them from deceptive practices. The big banks hate the CFPB and its investigations into their policies and practices. The agency has recovered more than $1.5 billion for consumers bilked by credit card companies. For the first time, with the CFPB working people have a cop on the financial beat. At its head, Cordray has earned widespread applause. Consumer groups hail how he’s made the CFPB transparent and responsive. Civil rights groups applaud the progress he’s forced on diversity in hiring and services. He’s gone after lenders and others for charging people of color more for mortgages, auto loans and credit cards. The CFPB has recouped over $400 million in payments and credits to more than 500,000 consumers who experienced discrimination. Trump has given his economic policy over to the big bankers. They are gearing up for another predator’s ball. The first regulation Cohn wants to reverse is the “fiduciary rule,” which requires investment advisers to put client’s interests first when they deal with retirement accounts. Banks don’t like the rule because it prohibits investment advisers from peddling products that line their pockets at their clients’ expense. One thing is clear. If Trump’s bankers can get rid of Cordray and geld the CFPB, millions of Americans will lose billions to the tricks and traps of the banks and lenders. Cohn has made Trump’s intentions clear. Now we have to rise up and demand that Congress protect the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from Trump’s Goldman Sachs marauders. You can write to the Rev. Culbreath Celebrated as Montgomery County’s First Black Chief By Burt Levine, Political Writer
K
en Culbreath, a north Houston native and 23-year veteran of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, has been appointed Chief Deputy overseeing the fast growing county north of Houston’s 800 sheriff’s employees and $70 million budget as the county’s first black chief. “I understand the relevance of my race in this appointment in a Houston suburb that’s becoming more and more diverse each day in attracting young professionals and others from every race. But I’ve worked all my adult life in law enforcement here and want young people to know being prepared to be the best without regard to race is what is important,” Culbreath said about Ken Culbreath the partnership he has with recently elected Sheriff Rand Henderson.Henderson said, “Chief Culbreath is one of the greatest leaders of men and women I’ve ever known. His ability to take a vision and convert it to a goal that’s then successfully accomplished by a cohesive team is what separates him from all others and why I appointed him as my first appointment. I have the ultimate faith and confidence in his abilities. I’m proud to work with him to secure our community’s safety,” Henderson said. Culbreath grew up with his grandparents where he completed M.B. Smiley High School and later earned his BS in criminal justice from the University of Houston-Downtown. He is a graduate of the FBI’s National Law Enforcement Academy in Quantico, Va. He has earned Texas Commission on Law Enforcement licenses: Master Peace Officer, Instructor Proficiency Certificate and Firearm Instructor. He is a graduate of the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas through Sam Houston State University and has earned the honor of Distinguished Graduate from the Front Sight Firearms Training Institute.“As I said preparation is what got me here. It’s how I’ll do my job in commanding law enforcement in this county 90 percent not in the jurisdiction of a police department. Our responsibilities include police patrols in The Woodlands, an increasingly diverse upwardly mobile
44
community just north of Houston,” said Culbreath, who added he is married and the father to two daughters and a son, which makes him more committed to public safety. Culbreath has served at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office since 1994. He has also graduated from the Houston Police Academy and served at HPD. During his MCSO tenure, he’s served as a jail deputy, patrol deputy, undercover narcotics investigator, detective, internal affairs sergeant and detective sergeant. He held a leadership position on the SWAT team for over 15 years. “I helped train more than 2,500 police licensed professionals there and with the sheriff have implemented one of the first online learning management systems for law enforcement in the country,” Culbreath said. He added in a county with more than half a million citizens now he is committed to creating the most professional team imaginable that will then attract recruits to his team from every race and region that want to work with the best anywhere in the country. Culbreath continued he loves his new job because his command “is the most diverse ever, educated and trained that we’ve had in the Sheriff’s Office. Unlike Harris and Fort Bend Counties that are known for being majority-minority, he knows Montgomery remains majority white but is becoming more diverse with each new subdivision being carved into the piney woods area. Culbreath’s election succeeding retiring Sheriff Gage got him this
post but it was his late grandmother that was most influential in his life.
“She was my rock. I still regard her that way. She introduced me to Christ, taught me how to treat a lady, to stay on the straight and narrow and finish my college degree. She corrected me as a child and in growing up when I got off the path that got me here today,” he said. Keep in the know on Texas politics and Texas election issues with Burt Levine. BLACK HISTORY
I Am Not Your Negro: A Time Capsule Into the Past And the Future By Brandon Caldwell, Feature Writer
T
he set up for Raoul Peck’s “I Am Not Your Negro” is reflective of the times. Baldwin, one of Black America’s foremost voices on race relations in the 1960s to the point he’s been lionized for all time is made to feel as if he’s speaking for the current. No less than five minutes into Peck’s film are we shown various scenes of anguish and protest from Ferguson, Missouri. It’s the film’s biggest allegory that Baldwin’s work, even when originally framed around the deaths of three of his friends can be echoed for all time. Baldwin is initially pressed with a question about “negro” optimism and he lets out an exasperated sigh. It’s eerily reminiscent of many a conversation Blacks have had in this country in regards to “solving” racism. He responds in kind that it’s not on black people to be the cure for racism. Because black people are constantly aware of something, while whites are far more in line to wistfully ignore it.
concise editing. His parallels aren’t completely direct, there is no modern take on how whites and others attempt to dictate race control upon blacks. But there is archival and historical footage of how black men are depicted. Of how horror films of their time were actually crime dramas where black men were found guilty before their peers. There’s anguish over the death of Emmitt Till, his grisly lynching still bearing scars some fifty years later. Lies still hang heavily upon the constant view of Black America, even as unrepentant racism and more has not only tugged on America’s skirt, it has disrobed her completely.
Your cursory idea of “I Am Not Your Negro” is not a crash course into James Baldwin, the man. It is a film based around Baldwin’s thoughts from an unfinished manuscript. The 31 pages of “Remember This House” play out as a letter to a friend, with Samuel L. Jackson’s voice operating as the main vehicle of Baldwin. As a literary titan, Baldwin’s views of the world have been captured in “The Fire Next Time” and archived speaking engagements across the globe. He was the fearless one, even when the FBI had a watch on him as if he were a fire-stroking revolutionary.
“It’s scary for the younger generation because you don’t have the models right in front of you,” Peck told MTV in a recent interview. “There’s an apparent freedom, an apparent liberty of access to everything, but you can’t use it because it’s too much. I don’t know how it’s gonna go, but like Baldwin says, this generation will need to face it. You can’t put your head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t exist. The best way we know is to face it and start talking — really talking, face to face.”
Peck, whose previous work included 2000’s “Lumumba” decides to take viewers on a bit of a history lesson, showing the parallels between the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and the #BlackLivesMatter movement of today. Creating a movie with Baldwin involved him contacting the estate. “His sister had seen my film. “Lumumba” and when I asked for the rights, she agreed to everything, which was unprecedented.” It would be four years before he had any grasp on how to present “I Am Not Your Negro” before finally settling on the work of “Remember This House”.
When race battles occurred in Alabama, they were broadcast on the news nightly. Baldwin viewed the apathy towards it not as alarming, but rather another notch towards the belief of general white apathy. “White people wish Birmingham was on Mars, naive to the fact that Birmingham is occurring all over the country,” he says in the film. It’s a theme that’s been broached not only in “I Am Not Your Negro” but across the annals of time. Segregation of the races was never about acknowledging how the other half lives, it was about being obtuse to how the other half suffered.
Death as it were is a far greater muse than we let it on to be. Baldwin knew the subjects of “Remember This House” intimately as good friends. None of the three main subjects, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X & Martin Luther King Jr., lived past the age of 40. Lorraine Hansberry, who died at 34 from pancreatic cancer was a minor vehicle for Baldwin in the manuscript. He mourned her death, opining on the idea that she was a victim of the fight for equality. A playwright, fearless, had smoked more than three packs a day. The weariness that bore on Baldwin in the 31 pages of “Remember This House” are echoed today.
“Most of the white Americans I’ve ever encountered had a Negro friend or a Negro maid or somebody in high school,” Baldwin says during the film in a clip taken from his 1963 lecture at the Florida Forum. “But they never or rarely, after school was over or whatever, came to my kitchen. We were segregated from the schoolhouse door. Therefore he doesn’t know, he really does not know, what is was like for me to leave my house, you know, leave the school and go back to Harlem. He doesn’t know how Negroes live. And it comes as a surprise, to the Kennedy brothers and to everybody else in the country. I’m certain, again, like most white Americans I’ve encountered. They have no, I’m sure they have nothing against Negroes. That’s really not the question. The question is really a kind of apathy and ignorance. Which is a price we pay for
The beliefs and accolades lobbed towards the now Oscar-nominated film are strong, if not astute. How Peck chooses to jump around with the timeline to show the parallels is

segregation. That’s what segregation means. That, you don’t know what’s happening on the other side of the wall, because you don’t want to know.” Peck’s film is mandatory viewing. Not for it’s appeal to the non-woke, but how it essentially picks up where Baldwin left off. Jackson’s voice, normally alarming and animated is smoldering, if not a cold reminder of gravitas. His duty as a director was to give light to the days of old and the current of new. As protests erupt across the country against the current administration that inhabits the house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, there’s a conversation to be had about the major vehicle that roamed in Ferguson: protest. Protesting in Ferguson after the death of Michael Brown began occurring across the country for a number of unarmed Black men and women at the hand of the police. However, they weren’t given the same coded language of resistance and championing by the media and others. Instead, they were dehumanized, reduced to misnomers and more. There’s a parallel with that as well.
“The white revolutionary sounds far more romantic, than the black one,” Baldwin says. As a man far ahead of his time, as someone who operated as a witness rather than an agent to the Black Panthers or the Black Muslims, I wonder if he knew how much his words would echo throughout decades, if not a half century. “I Am Not Your Negro” is not the piece of art that shall change a world but it’s a film that works as a time capsule into both the past and the future. When the thundering drums of Kendrick Lamar’s “The Blacker The Berry” bring up the credits, we’re left to question where exactly did we go. And how far do we still have to go.

Super Bowl LI Recap: And Then There Was One By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer
A
s football fans gathered at Super Bowl parties all across America, they had no clue that they were about to witness a miracle and history all at the same time. The New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons met at NRG stadium in Houston, Texas for the last game of the 2016 season. Super Bowl LI, this matchup featured the newly crowned NFL MVP (Matt Ryan) vs. the ageless wonder (Tom Brady). Yet it would only be one who would walk away with the Lombardi trophy and legendary status. The Falcons put the Patriots in unfamiliar territory very early by jumping out to a 21 point lead. Wait. What? There is no possible way we are watching a Belichick/Brady led team look so lethargic and outcoached at the same time is it? We have seen the Patriots come back from a 10 point deficit in the Super Bowl before (SB 49 – Seahawks), but this was 21 points. And no team has ever come back from that many points down to win. On the next offensive possession the Patriots were saved time after time on third down by defensive holding penalties committed by a Dan Quinn (Falcons Head Coach) led defense. A Big Foot sighting. A UFO landing in Arizona. Well those things didn’t happen, but the equivalent did to every Patriots fan who was watching. Tom Brady threw an interception for a touchdown. Yes, you read that right (I even had to proofread that sentence 3 times). And just that quick all the Atlanta Falcons had taken the football heart of the 4 time Super Bowl champions. New England was able to muster up 3 points before the half which seemed as if the Falcons had given them those points as a gesture of good faith. The halftime score was 21-3, but in the eyes of the fans the score looked like 45 – impossible. As the second half got under way, it was as if Bill Belichick let the whole Patriots team stay on the field to watch Lady Ga Ga in the halftime show. They forced the Falcons to punt on the opening possession of the half, but gave the ball right back to them on a punt themselves. Matt Ryan then drove Atlanta right down the field and connected with RB Tevin Coleman for a 6 yard score. 28 – 3. “Y’all thought it was a game. The Patriots are done. It’s over.” These were the words bellowed out by hip hop star and avid Atlanta Falcons fan, Bow Wow. It was also the mindset of every Falcons fan that was in the building. Even the President couldn’t watch anymore as he left his own Super Bowl party. I could see the headline of most articles being written during the game. “Ice in his veins. Matt Ryan and the Falcons wins Super Bowl 51.” Well in the midst of daydreaming and stuffing my face with nachos, Tom Brady slipped away from the bench and into a phone booth to go from Clark Kent to Superman. Well, that’s what it eventually would look like to Atlanta. One thing that defines a champion is that they never surrender or give up. NEVER. Tom Brady must have this phrase tattooed somewhere on his body. Down 25 points and counting, he started to show why he is a 4 time SB champion. A touchdown here (5 yard pass to RB James White) 28-9, a field goal there, 28-12, and just like that you could feel the momentum starting to shift. Finally, the Patriots we know have arrived in Houston. I guess NE defense wanted some of the action as well as they forced a fumble in the fourth quarter to put the ball back in Brady’s hands. Mr. Reliable himself then threw a 6-yard TD pass and the offense converted a 2-point conversion. Just like that the Patriots are back in the game. 28-20. By this time you could hear crickets from Atlanta to Houston. Both
88
fans alike couldn’t believe what they were witnessing. Could New England really make history by coming back? Would Atlanta choke away this game? Everyone wanted answers to these questions and wanted them fast. When the Falcons got the ball back they pretty much answered the second question loud and clear. YES. On three consecutive plays, the Falcons shot themselves in the foot with a sack, a holding penalty, and an over thrown pass. What looked like it would be a simple FG attempt ended up turning into a punt to the 9 yard line. Now the average football fan is thinking that with a little over two minutes left to play in the game and 91 yards needed to score that the game is pretty much over. Wait. Throw in the fact that if you do score you also need another 2-point conversion to tie it. Yep, this game is pretty much over and thank goodness the writers still had that story from the second quarter about the Patriots being blown out still saved to the hard drive. Hold on one second. I said average football fan right? Not Patriots football fans where they praise Tom Brady for being everything that is right in the National Football League. They marched right down the field on Atlanta and were aided by a miraculous catch from WR Julian Edelman to keep the drive alive. They eventually scored and tied the game with another 2-point conversion. 28 -28. Mr. Brady let the world know that he was coming for the trophy and it wasn’t anything anyone could do about it. Especially the Falcons. Matt Ryan got the ball back with 57 seconds left, but with no timeouts the drive stalled and the game was headed into overtime (1st time ever). All New England needed was one more opportunity to have the ball and they got that opportunity by winning the coin toss. By that time you could hear a distinct voice in the back of my head saying, “Game over. Brady is not giving this ball back to them.” And true enough, a James White TD sealed the deal. 28 -34. By that time reality finally hit me on what the world had witnessed. History was just made by one of the best teams to ever do it, The New England Patriots. Down by the largest deficit in Super Bowl history and they never got rattled. They just kept doing it the “Patriot Way.”

LOCAL SuperBOLD Luncheon Celebrates & Embraces Women BOSSES
By Cecilia Smith, Feature Writer Photos by Mike Munoz ll it takes is an idea, and the tenacity to see it through. When I spoke with Nicole Coleman a few weeks ago she was busy preparing for SuperBOLD; an empowerment brunch that she hoped would bring likeminded women together. It was an idea that sprang from an unlikely source, coming to her as she lay recovering in a Houston hospital from an unexpected illness.
A
Personable and energetic, during our first chat the mother and entrepreneur revealed she had come up with the idea while in the ER as she wondered “What if I’m not around? What will my children know about me? Would they know my drive?’ I just kept hearing “Be Bold.” For Coleman, that meant transforming an idea into reality, as she worked to honor a group of women that had excelled at creating their own lanes. In addition to honorees Samantha Selolwane, 93.7 personality Devi Dev, educator Damita Jones and attorney Demetra Liggins; Coleman also secured popular editor and Fashion Bomb Daily founder Claire Sulmers as the keynote speaker for the afternoon.A few weeks after we spoke I was able to witness that dream come to fruition, as the city flooded into Houston’s famed St. Regis Hotel on February 3rd for Coleman’s inaugural “SuperBOLD Women’s
Empowerment Brunch.” Designed to celebrate women with a motivation to succeed, the afternoon offered big laughs and even a few joyful tears. In a city that hosts events daily it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle, yet Coleman handled her own with ease; setting hers apart by offering real encouragement and using her own experiences as a living testimony of what one is capable of when talent and faith collide. Taking great care with details, guests were given creative goodie bags that included vision boards, quality hair care products and more. If the first edition of SuperBOLD is any indicator, this event is here to stay.

Nike Football’s Super Bowl Gives Back to Yates and Wheatley Students By Brandon Caldwell, Feature Writer / Photo Courtesty Nike Communications
N
ike Football’s Super Bowl contribution wasn’t in the form of a massive party. Or even a display dedicated to their long standing relationship with the athletic community whether it be on the field or training. Instead the longstanding sportswear giant chose to give back to two outstanding football communities from two of the more historic districts in the city. From the early 1920s to the 1960s, Jack Yates High of Third Ward and Phyllis Wheatley High of Fifth Ward played annually in the Turkey Day Classic, arguably the most anticipated high school game in the city. Due to UIL rules stating that all regular season games need be finished before Thanksgiving break; the Turkey Day Classic was shuttered. Until now. Nike has partnered with both schools to revive the legendary game this upcoming football season. Using The Opening, Nike’s regional high school football skills competition as the ultimate prize for individual players, the company pulled out all the stops for the two storied programs. On Thursday, the two squads gathered together for “The Inspiration” banquet featuring former Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware, current Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson and motivational speaker Dr. Eric Thomas. Johnson, who grew up facing multiple hardships in Iowa, told us before the event of how much he cherished moments like this. “It’s a blessing. My biggest thing is letting them know that it doesn’t matter where you are, where you started, you can always follow your dreams. I wasn’t highly recruited out of high school. They can still make it. It’s not going to be easy. People will down talk you and tried to lead you the wrong way. You still have a chance to follow your dreams.” Thomas, a Michigan State University graduate, parted with life altering advice for the student athletes in attendance. He preached about tapping into giving 120%, using Nike athlete Serena Williams as an example. “You get in the game to play and you get in the game to win,” he said. During the banquet, the athletes saw the new Nike inspired gear for both Jack Yates & Wheatley for the 2017 school year and were appropriately ecstatic. From a custom mural and art installations by Houston-based artist Gonzo to a large block party at the Denver Harbor Multi Service Center in Fifth Ward, Nike Football leveraged its unique power as a sports powerhouse to unite communities through the game. Students could interact with actual NFL pros such as Jarvis Landry of the Miami Dolphins, Eddie George, Bruce Matthews, Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, former Green Bay Packer Donald Driver, Michael Thomas & more. Nike Football also energized the future athletes of tomorrow with a partnership with the YMCA of Greater Houston for the “H-Town Huddle”, an upcoming 10-week flag football season for athletes ranging from ages 7-12. On Friday night (February 3), the kids took the field clad in their Nike apparel, looking the part of a future NFL star.

With almost every great event comes a worthy cause in regard to fundraising. Maya Henry, daughter to Thomas J. Henry’s spearheaded this year’s Maxim Party fundraiser. The 16-year-old model, actress, and activist chose The Tree Media Foundation as the recipient of the funds raised by the event’s silent auction. Some of the celebs spotted on the red carpet: Travis Scott (Performer), DJ Khaled (Performer), DNCE (Performer), Adrian Peterson (Vikings), Adrienne Bailon, Antonio Brown (Steelers), Fergie, Ludacris, Doug Flutie, Warren Moon and Young Jeezy

Lakewood Church Joins Houston’s Football Festivities with Super Bowl Gospel Celebration By Destany Rainey, Feature writer
L
akewood Church joined in on the excitement of Super Bowl LI by hosting the 18th NFL sanctioned Super Bowl Gospel Celebration on February 3rd with a live tapping for BET. Familiar faces David and Tamela Mann, who have been featured in various Tyler Perry productions, hosted the concert alongside Lakewood’s Pastor John Gray. The night got started with a bang with the Prairie View A&M University’s Marching Storm flooding the venue aisles with a sonic boom before Houston rapper Lecrae performed his single “All I Need Is You,” adding to the upbeat mood. Anthony Hamilton and the Hamiltons followed with a performance of “Still.” BJ the Chicago kid added to Hamilton’s performance with his single, “Jeremiah/World Needs More Love.” Not to be excluded from the lineup was Houston’s own gospel superstar Yolanda Adams who was introduced to the stage by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. With the tone for the night already set, other performers Grammy award winning gospel legend Cece Winans, Natalie Grant, Damien

Escobar, Lalah Hathaway and Jekalyn Carr contributed to the spiritual atmosphere. Tamela Mann’s powerful performance of “God Provides” raised the level of energy to another level as members of the audience shouted praises. Gospel and comedy was a perfect pair as Pastor Gray blended his humor with funnyman David Mann a.k.a. “Mr. Brown” creating the ideal comedic duo. When the audience wasn’t laughing they were in tears moved by the words of Troy Vincent’s wife Tommi professing her love for her husband as she introduced him. The NFL executive Vice President and former NFL player received the 2017 Lifetime of Inspiration award for his dedication to his faith and contributions to the NFL. “Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future,” said Vincent during his acceptance speech. Before the night’s end, the NFL Players Choir closed the event performing a few well known gospel tunes, including Kirk Franklin’s “We lift our Hands.” The event couldn’t come to a close without words from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
“Gospel music can bring people together,” Lee said. Long time charity partners of the event Emmitt Smith and his wife Pat Smith made an appearance. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the NFL Players Care Foundation. The concert will air on BET.

SuperBash 2017 Honored Celebrity’s Philanthropic Efforts in the Community By Monica Jones, Feature Writer
S
uper Bowl LI served as the perfect opportunity to showcase Houston’s southern hospitality, diverse culture and community spirit. The Music World Entertainment Complex was the ideal landmark to host SuperBash 2017, a week-long of parties and events hosted by some of the hottest names in sports and entertainment. One of the most significant events of the weekend was the Power of Influence Awards Brunch, Friday morning to kick off Super Bowl weekend. Hosted by the founder of Music World Entertainment, Matthew Knowles, the brunch was created to award the civic and community efforts of retired NFL player Chester Pitts, Whitney Mercilus of the Houston Texans, recording artist Jordin Sparks, Grammy award winning music producer Bryan-Michael Cox, and NFL Jets WR Brandon Marshall. The privately catered brunch hosted more than100 Super Bowl patrons mixing and mingling over southern fare and participating in a live auction. During the exclusive affair, honoree Jordin Sparks spoke about her organization The M.A.D Girls Inc. commitment to leave a positive impact in each Super Bowl city they visit annually. Gospel’s rising stars Jekalyn Carr took to the stage and blew the crowd away with her soothing melodies. Guests were treated to special performances from Stefon4U and Zoey Dollars. In addition to amazing entertainment, attendees were also privy to a tour of Music World studios to explore the 25 year history of the label that birthed one of the biggest girl groups of all time in Destiny Child.

And Nothing But The T.R.U.T.H. By TotallyRandie
he lights at Hotel ZaZa weren’t the only things that were lit Friday night two days before Super Bowl LI! The Star-Studded Charity Event benefited the T.R.U.T.H. Project and AFCA (American Foundation for Children with Aids). While the Truth Project educates and mobilizes the LGBTQ communities of color through social arts that promotes mental, emotional, and sexual health; the AFCA provides support to infected and affected HIV+ children and their caregivers. Definitely a worthy cause to support, and boy did they support it. We received an intimate concert with former Houstonian now living in Los Angeles, Leela James and Grammy-Nominated singer Eric Benet. The real McCoy, Lisa Raye, showed up and spoke with us about why she could
be anywhere in the world right now but she was about “giving back, and bringing awareness, and using my platform for the betterment of who we are [as a people]”. She wasn’t the only one about positivity and change. NFL Ray Lewis showed up as well to support the cause and spent lots of time in the dance floor with Ms. McCoy. They literally stayed on the dance floor, but how could they now, with legendary DJ/Producer/Artist Biz Markie on the 1s and 2s. Even “Real Housewives of Atlanta” reality stars NeNe Leaks and Cynthia Bailey, ventured from their VIP spot onto the hotel’s main ballroom dance floor. Even the Texans GM and his lovely wife walked the red carpet joined with Steven A. Smith, Nephew Tommy, and more! Now let’s talk food! I saw a lot of pictures of celebrities, what I didn’t see was a lot of pictures of food. Although
Houston is known for its great food, the Monarch is king when it comes to events such as these. Their Hors d’oeuvres were amazing! So we would like to give a huge kudos to the chef! Lamb chop lollipops, Shrimp Cocktails, Chicken Kabobs, Fried artichoke balls (sweet and sour chili sauce), and more was a perfect pairing for the open bar. The event was produced by the family owned Pomp & Circumstance Extravagant Events, headed by Charlene Shackelford and Claudette Foreman, with Endicott & Company handling publicity. Take an amazing venue, a great cause, delicious food, endless drinks, an artsy silent auction, two mini concerts, and sprinkle it with some stars, and you have the best pre-superbowl party in Houston. Thanks Hotel ZaZa for the invite!

NFL Alumni Match Up with Wounded Warriors for Charity Game By Brian Barefield, Sports Writer
O
n May 27, 2009, I raised my right hand and repeated, “I Brian Barefield, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That was by far one of the best days of my life. Well that was until I stepped into Delmar Stadium in Houston, Texas on February 1, 2017 to witnessed all of our brave men and women who were injured serving and defending this country go up against NFL alumni pros all in the name of charity. Many flooded stadium gates to see the battle on the gridiron between the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team against the alumni of the NFL and college athletics but more importantly just to say “thank you for your service” to the many who choose to fight for our freedom and support their families. Humana, health benefits service provider to millions U.S. service men and women sponsored the charity the game that included former players from the Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, Texas A&M University, University of Texas and University of Houston. Wounded Warriors competing in the game include veterans from the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). This was the tenth WWAFT charity game and the fourth consecutive time the game has been part of the Super Bowl festivities. As I walked on the field as a proud veteran myself, I could feel the energy from the members of the WWAFT. The pride seemed to be one that was shared. I overheard one veteran say, That veteran saw his opponents on the field as the “greats” and his rivals opposite him and the fans in the stand saw him along with the other vets as the “great.” Former Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai and Houston Sharpstown High School graduate commented, “A lot of people forget the unsung hero. The one who put their life on the line for us.” The heroes were not forgotten on this day. They were honored and appreciated.

Antonio Brown Hosts Celeb Studded Super Bowl Event For A Great Cause Photos and Story By: Lisa Valadez
T
he whirlwind of the Super Bowl here in Houston brought the city plenty of excitement and fun with all of the interactive activities, parties, celeb sightings, and more. Out of the many (emphasize “many”) events Houston Style covered, Antonio Brown’s ‘Celebrity Super Slam” was definitely one of the most memorable highlights. Considered one of, if not the best, receivers in the game, the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver hosted a star-studded basketball charity event fundraiser for a great program, The Boys & Girls Club of Houston. “We are grateful that Antonio has chosen to give back to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston through his Super Slam charity basketball game,” said Tiffani Wesson, Corporate Outreach Manager for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. “Our organization strives to continue being a positive place for kids. Antonio’s work is doing just that by making an impact on our Houston community.” The family friendly event was held near at the Butler Sports Complex which was received very well by Houstonians that wanted to star gaze but couldn’t easily access the events in the downtown area. Some of the celebrities spotted on the red carpet and on the court showing off some basketball skills were Snoop Dogg, DJ Khaled, Ja Rule, Porsha Williams, Doug Flutie, Stephen A. Smith, Kirko Bangz, and many more. “I’m excited about the opportunity to help the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston” said Brown. “You can never do enough in our communities, especially where kids and their development are involved.” On a personal note, thank you Antonio Brown, for giving Houston children an opportunity to see their favorite celebs up close and in person.

VALENTINE
Four Steps to the Perfect Valentine’s Day I By Demez White, Feature Writer
’m dedicating this article to my Valentines, you know who you are but it calms me to write to you and to be perfectly honest I’m excited. My Valentine’s Day last year wasn’t the best and I want to start this year on the right path. Maybe there won’t be any call into works and hotel rooms all day but I would settle for good conversation, tipsy vibrations and building memories. So today I’m going to write four steps to the Perfect Valentine’s Day…
Step One: I’m going to pick what you like and enhance it to suit the
day! You’re the sort of woman that loves food so I’m going to find that one restaurant that blows your mind. You like cookies and cupcakes so I’m going to get some specially made to celebrate our moment. And maybe it won’t be as simple as food or shopping; maybe I’ll set you up a fashion show. Get a boutique to set up a runway for you to go there and model some dresses you would look amazing in. After all, my books are sold at a couple and when you’re the author you can ask for favors! The point is I’m going to make the day about more than just impressing you, I’m going to make the day about mentally blowing your mind.
Step Two: I can’t ask you to look amazing, to smell amazing, to wear
my favorite color on your bare skin or a pair of heels that may be uncomfortable if I’m not willing to do what I have to do to impress you. So my haircut, my cologne, my slacks and blazer and loafers will all be perfect for you. The scent not too strong, the charm not too forceful. I’m a pretty simple guy and my understanding basically works like this. You’re the star and I’ll be there to compliment you. What you wear, the attention you get. The way men glance away from their dates or wives to look at your butt, that’s my reward, that’s what makes me want to dress and play the part of the perfect escort. You’ll be happy because I look good and I’ll be comfortable because I’m with the most beautiful woman in the room!
Step Four: Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemistry… I’ve never been on a date in my life, no matter how expensive, how prepared, how sexy that worked if there was no chemistry. We’re going out on Valentine’s Day and that means we’ve had some drinks and chilled and gotten to know each other on some level. It means we’ve flirted and laughed and that we’re both looking forward to this night. I believe in Chemistry like I believe in baby Jesus and love at first sight. These are my four steps to making our Valentine’s Day Perfect!!!! I can’t wait to take you out and I hope you’re just as excited as I am.
Step Three: Alcohol, beer and wine. I’ve taken three wine classes in
my life for one simple reason… To know what to order when I’m out with a woman that has the ability to make me turn my phone off. (And I do love my phone). I’m the biggest fan of drinking on dates; I think it loosens our tongues, it adds to the flirting and more than anything flirting is just better tipsy. Seeing the wine glass at your lips, taking a shot at the bar while they get our table ready. I’m a fan of what liquor brings and I plan on having the perfect combinations to make your night perfect.
