COMMENTARY
THE BIDEN-HARRIS ADMINISTRATION’S LNG DECISION IS THE HOPE YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR By Ben Jealous, National Political Commentator
J
ames Hiatt lives in an area along the Mississippi River in Louisiana that has been dubbed “Cancer Alley.” Teeming with chemical plants and oil and gas refineries, the air the residents of this area breathe contains more carcinogens than anywhere else in the country. One of those oil and gas facilities is the Calcasieu Pass liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal, which has further devastated public health, local livelihoods, and marine wildlife. Last week the Biden-Harris administration’s Department of Energy (DOE) paused the permitting of new LNG projects. The decision stops the gas industry’s plans for the even larger CP2 LNG terminal right next store. This move was perhaps the boldest rebuke ever from a US president against the oil and gas industry. President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Secretary of Energy Granholm – whose support for the move was especially crucial – did the right thing. Millions of us are celebrating along with James Hiatt, who says, “I'm thankful for this pause in granting gas export licenses; the DOE has finally heard the wake-up call. The gas industry was planning to inundate my hometown with LNG terminals.” American families’ pocketbooks will be thankful as well. Any word you hear from the fossil fuel industry or the politicians in their pockets about how this decision harms American consumers or the economy is a lie. As Hiatt points out, “exporting LNG drives up domestic energy costs, affecting everything from home heating to food prices.” Pausing the LNG boom will keep global energy markets more stable. It will help move economies and electric grids towards using less expensive and more resilient renewable energy sources.

It will keep 681 coal plants worth – or 548 million gasoline-powered cars worth – of planet-warming greenhouse gasses out of our atmosphere each year. All of this is critically important. But so is James Hiatt’s point about the “finally heard wake-up call.” For years, activists, along with scientists and others, have been sounding the alarm to get those in power to wake up. Some of the most powerful voices have been those of young people. And we should all appreciate what it has taken for those young people to maintain their determination. The American Psychological Association defines "eco-anxiety" as "a chronic fear of environmental doom." In 2021, Lancet Planetary Health surveyed more than 10,000 young people, ages 16 to 25, in 10 countries. Anxiety about climate change impacted the ability of more than 45 percent of these young people to function in their daily lives; 75 percent were “frightened” of the future. And it

exposed a key feature of eco-anxiety: hopelessness. Half the young people in the study described feeling helpless and powerless. Now, we know that despite the fear, young activists have been among our fiercest leaders in the fight against the climate crisis. They have not given in to the lingering despair. But, as a piece on eco-anxiety in the Harvard Political Review pointed out, young people have felt like they are alone in the fight. And, “if no one is listening and no change is happening, then pushing forward can feel hopeless.” That is why, aside from the emissions numbers … aside from the economic and energy security benefits … the Biden-Harris administration’s LNG decision is a win for hope. And hope is a powerful thing. In his statement about the decision, President Biden said, “We will heed the calls of young people and frontline

communities who are using their voices to demand action from those with the power to act.” This victory for climate-concerned people the world over – and the planet itself – is proof that organizing works. Grabbing the bullhorn and telling your story – even if the crowds don’t listen right at first – matters. This LNG decision is a momentum builder. And a clarion call for even more organized action on the climate crisis – especially from young people. those of the entire Houston regional passport offices, District Clerk Walker’s office, through the diligent efforts of William “Bill” Bobrick and the team, has identified the crucial need for vigilance and specialized education. Each passport agent is to receive targeted training aimed at recognizing and acting upon signs of potential human trafficking among those seeking passport services. The training, meticulously designed and delivered by the Human Trafficking Division of the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, underscores the critical importance of inter-agency collaboration. Sheriff Fagan has highlighted the unique challenges presented by the Houston area, and by extension, Fort Bend County, as a nexus point for human trafficking activities due to its geographical proximity to the US-Mexico border. "By equipping our staff with

s early voting approaches on February 20th, anticipation builds for the Texas Democratic and GOP Primaries on Super Tuesday, March 5th. A vast array of positions from the President to local constables will be on the ballot, but one race, in particular, is drawing attention in Harris County: the Constable Pct. 5 race, where after 40 years of dedicated service, Ted Heap is stepping down, and Sergeant Jerry Rodriguez steps forward as a candidate. Covering over 370 square miles, including the rapidly growing and diverse areas west of Loop 610 and south of US 290, this precinct is home to over 1.8 million residents. It's a community Rodriguez knows intimately, not just as a law enforcement officer but as one of its own. Born to Mexican American parents who instilled the value of education and the pursuit of the American dream, Rodriguez's story is one of resilience and commitment. His journey from a wrongful arrest as a teenager to becoming a beacon of justice and advocacy for young minorities is a testament to his unwavering dedication to the community. HEALTH: EMBRACING A NEW ERA IN PROSTATE HEALTH: RETHINKING THE APPROACH TO LOW-RISK CANCERS By Francis Page, Jr. for www.StyleMagazine.com
Understanding Low-Risk Prostate Cancer: A Shift Towards Personalized Care The world of oncology is evolving, particularly in how we address prostate cancer—the most common cancer among men in the United States. Modern medicine now recognizes that not all cancers are created equal, with a particular focus on lowrisk prostate cancer. This condition, often growing very slowly or not progressing at all, has sparked a debate: should we still label it as cancer? Rethinking Prostate Cancer: The Case for Renaming The term 'cancer' carries a weight that can lead to overtreatment, especially in the case of low-risk prostate cancers. Overly aggressive responses such as surgery or radiation can leave patients with life-altering side effects. A growing body of evidence suggests that active surveillance could be a more appropriate response for these low-grade tumors. Leading specialists suggest a nomenclature shift towards terms like 'premalignant lesions' to reduce anxiety and encourage a more measured approach to treat-
ment. Early Detection: A Double-Edged Sword With advances in screening technologies, detection of prostate cancer at its earliest stages has increased significantly. However, this has also led to the discovery of cancers that may not pose a serious health risk— some may even regress spontaneously. It's important for physicians to educate patients on the complexity of early detection and the reality that not all detected cancers require immediate intervention. Grade Group 1 Prostate Cancer: To Treat or Monitor? Classified into grade groups
with 1 being the lowest risk, these cancers represent a considerable portion of diagnoses. Current studies, including a pivotal one published in the New England Journal of Medicine, indicate that active surveillance for grade group 1 cancers results in similar long-term survival compared to immediate treatment. This evidence advocates for personalized treatment plans and reinforces the potential benefits of monitoring over immediate surgical or radiation treatments. The Debate Continues: Cancer by Any Other Name While there is a strong push for renaming low-risk cancers to avoid unnecessary treatment and anxiety, some
practitioners emphasize the caution required due to the potential for misclassification and the importance of active surveillance. There's also concern regarding how a name change could impact patient follow-up and insurance coverage for necessary tests. Looking Forward: Education Over Renaming Some professionals, like Dr. William L. Dahut of the American Cancer Society, argue for better patient and family education about lowrisk prostate cancer rather than a name change. Understanding what a lowgrade cancer diagnosis means could empower men and their families to make informed decisions without succumbing to the pressure of aggressive treatment. In conclusion, the conversation about renaming low-risk prostate cancer reflects a broader shift towards personalized and patient-centered care. As research progresses and awareness grows, the medical community aims to guide patients towards treatments that are not only effective but also mindful of their quality of life.
