he Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) has outdone itself this year, not just in the aromatic mastery of barbeque but in a celebration that has truly embodied the spirit of Houston. With Houston First Corporation at the helm, the annual World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest was transformed into a microcosm of the city’s rich cultural tapestry, paying homage to Houston’s legendary Last Concert Café.

A Speakeasy Reborn: The Last Concert Café Comes to the Cook-Off

The Last Concert Café, a venerable Houston institution celebrating its 75th anniversary, was the thematic heartbeat of this year’s Cook-Off. Originally owned by Elena ‘Mama’ Aldrete Lopez, the café was known for its unique entry ritual—a secret knock on the iconic red door. In a tribute to this whimsical tradition, Houston First invited guests to relive the speakeasy’s charm, granting entry to their tent with a special knock and a promise of a delectable specialty cocktail on the other side.

ROCKIN’ RHYTHMS AND SMOKIN’ PITS: The HLSR Cook-Off Celebrates Houston’s Heritage with The Last Concert Café

The HLSR Cook-Off was not only a culinary spectacle but also a gathering of Houston’s notable figures. The presence of Houston Mayor John Whitmire, Houston First President Michael Heckman, and Metro Chairperson Elizabeth Brock underscored the event’s significance to the city’s social and cultural calendar. Their collective presence highlighted the city’s dedication to fostering community spirit and celebrating Houston’s storied past.

Joining them were luminaries of the media and philanthropy world—Francis Page, Jr. and wife Kristyn, Publisher

of Houston Style Magazine, and Emillian and Kim Gagne-White, along with Sarah Freddie, who brought an added flair to the festivities. Their involvement exemplified the strong community bonds and the shared commitment to the city’s growth and prosperity.

A Mission of Prosperity and Celebration

Houston First’s mission to enhance economic prosperity was palpably felt as they promoted the Houston region through this vibrant event. Their strategy to adopt a new theme annually, celebrating different

iconic Houston attractions, was a stroke of genius, one that promises to keep the city’s history alive in the hearts of its residents and visitors alike.

A City’s Essence Captured in Festivity

We at Houston Style Magazine have been privileged to cover an event that not only filled the air with the scent of barbeque but also with the essence of camaraderie and pride. As Houston rocks and rodeos into the future, we eagerly anticipate the continued celebration of its indomitable spirit, a spirit that was on full, glorious display at this year’s HLSR Cook-Off.

COMMENTARY BIDEN’S WALK CAN BEAT TRUMP’S TALK WITH THE WORKING CLASS, BUT HE NEEDS TO SPEAK UP

Spoiler alert! Donald Trump will be allowed to remain on the ballot this fall.

One way or another, the Supreme Court is going to decide that a state cannot remove Trump from based on the 14th amendment’s ban on insurrectionists holding elected office. Trump is an insurrectionist. But that is not the question currently before the Court. The decision will likely be joined by some of the Court’s moderates. It could even be unanimous.

Regardless of the reasoning behind or the narrowness of the ultimate decision, another barrier will be removed for Trump. His base will be further energized.

Increasingly, the question on many people’s minds is this: with the Trump train picking up speed again, what can President Biden really do to stop it? The first step is to recognize what we’re dealing with. Yes, many Americans are depressed about this election, and depressed about it being a rematch between the same people who were on the ballot last time. However, turnout will still be high.

It is still a presidential year. The media coverage will not let any of us escape constantly hearing about the election. And people know there is a ton at stake.

Each side sees a lot to fight against. Each side sees a lot to fight for. This election is likely to go to the side that working class America believes is fighting for them.

In order to understand working class America today, we have to understand a huge swath of working-class America generally has the same address. It is the place where the factory shut down and opiate addiction, meth addiction, and suicide shot up.

The economic and social struggles of this broad base of American society define the political moment that we are in. It is a populist one. This has allowed Donald Trump to speak to

Americans’ anxieties with no intention of following through, and in completely dishonest ways.

Trump has been stealing Bernie Sanders’ talking points since back in 2016. Remember before the all the “rigged election” rhetoric, Trump spoke of the “rigged economy.” He truthfully told voters our healthcare system is broken but dishonestly said he would give us a better one. And, of course he lambasted NAFTA as the disaster it was. It was all empty rhetoric. Trump lacked the conviction, knowledge, and genuine desire to do anything about these issues.

Take the issue of trade. All of Trump’s tough “America first” talk about trade belies the fact that his policies would do nothing to ensure American competitiveness. Despite China being a favorite target from the stump, Trump would allow China to dominate the emerging global economy by preventing the domestic growth of the industries at its center.

The irony is that what working class America is demanding, Joe Biden is delivering. He is just not talking about it.

Biden’s landmark Inflation Re-

duction Act (IRA) is reopening American factories, rebuilding American manufacturing, and creating jobs. Our current president is backing up industrial unions like the United Auto Workers when they find themselves in a real fight. And he is ensuring that America seizes the moment to lead the world economy in this century like we did the last one.

In a world where Donal Trump talks the talk and Joe Biden walks the walk, we should assume that the talker has the advantage. The only way to bridge that gap is for President Biden to start talking the talk too. As a guy from Scranton, he knows how to do it and it is authentically in his heart.

President Biden does not need to sound more like Trump. Trump is all bluster and aims only to foment anger. What President Biden needs to do is make it clear that when it comes to cars and energy, there is only one future: electric vehicles and renewable sources like solar and wind.

He needs to speak plainly about how if America does not seize these markets and support the manufacturing sectors behind these industries, China will. China already controls more than

80 percent of the world's solar manufacturing capacity and the Chinese electric car industry is growing rapidly.

To be sure, there are many, many factors at play in this year’s election.

But many of the big ones tie back to the working class. For instance, the gender gap has grown – but not necessarily in Biden’s favor. Women skew more heavily towards Biden in polls that follow public displays of Trump’s misogyny or news of his sexual assaults.

But in general, recent polls are showing Biden’s base advantage with women has shrunk. Meanwhile, the gender gap for men skews more and more heavily towards Trump. That is driven by the trend among working-class men. And it is working-class men of all races – including growing numbers of Black men.

Democratic politicians need to get over their default inclination to disregard working-class white men in their messaging. It ultimately leads to disregarding working-class people across the board.

We all grew up hearing that actions speak louder words. But talking the talk is becoming more and more important in our politics. This is not a case against action. Rather, where President Biden is already showing great leadership with his actions, he needs to also make sure the American people hear about it.

PLEDGE FOR A SECURE RODEO SEASON

mazon season is a time of excitement and celebration in Houston, a tradition that brings together families for thrilling competitions, live music, and festive fun. However, it's also a period marked by increased road safety risks, a concern that Houston takes very seriously. As we gear up for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo from February 27 to March 17, the City of Houston’s Vision Zero initiative underscores the importance of responsible enjoyment.

Houstonians have a proud tradition of hosting one of the largest rodeo events in the world, yet the city has experienced a sobering number of traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries in recent years. Vision Zero Houston is not just a program but a commitment to protect lives. The statistics from previous years are a stark reminder that behind every number is a person whose loss impacts a family, a community, a city.

As the city pulses with rodeo festivities, let's pledge to make safety paramount. Impaired driving, distractions, and unsafe road behaviors have no place in our celebrations. By desig-

nating sober drivers, staying vigilant, and using ride services or taxis, we can ensure the joy of rodeo season isn't marred by preventable tragedies.

This year, let's embody the spirit of Houston by making smart choices that safeguard ourselves and others. Whether you're behind the wheel, on a bike, or on foot, your decisions can save lives.

And if you encounter a dangerous situation, don't hesitate to dial 911. Your action could be the difference between life and death.

The journey to zero traffic deaths by 2030 is ambitious but achievable with collective effort. It's a vision that prioritizes the safety and accessibility of our streets for everyone.

As you immerse yourself in the exhilarating rodeo atmosphere, remember that a safe return home is the best end to a day at the rodeo. Visit the Vision Zero Houston website for more information on how you can contribute to a safer Houston.

Let's celebrate rodeo season with a commitment to safety — for a Houston that's vibrant, inclusive, and most importantly, safe for all.

As the crescendo of the election season approaches, Harris County voters are reminded that early voting for the highly anticipated Super Tuesday, happening on March 5, 2024, will conclude this Friday, March 1st. This pivotal day will determine the nominees for November's General Elections, shaping the future of federal, state, and local governance across Texas. Residents are called upon to participate actively, casting their votes between 7 am and 7 pm, and to make their voices heard in choosing their party's representatives.

In the forefront of judicial integrity, Statewide Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Michelle Slaughter stands firm against un-

warranted political pressures. The esteemed League City former District Judge, and proud alumna of the University of Houston and its Law Center, emphasizes the constitutional mandate that local District Attorneys are to spearhead voter fraud investigations, not the Texas Attorney General's office. This adherence to the rule of law has placed her in the crosshairs of political rivals, yet she remains steadfast, advocating for judicial independence at a downtown Houston forum amidst challenging discourse.

Amidst political rivalries, Texas Supreme Court Justice John Devine faces allegations of misconduct, while Harris County DA Kim Ogg, a dynamic legal

mind and University of Houston graduate, navigates the tumultuous waters of her Democratic Primary. Despite facing scrutiny over case management, Ogg's commitment to justice remains unwavering. Her personal connection to the victims of violent crimes fuels her relentless pursuit of equity and her staunch stance that Black Lives Matter is more than a statement—it is a principle she upholds with every case.

As Election Day draws near, Harris County opens 79 polling locations for early voting, leading up to the monumental Super Tuesday. This day not only holds significant weight for Texas but also plays a crucial role in the national landscape, with multi-

ple Southern States casting their votes for Presidential Delegate primaries.

Houstonians, the time is now to engage in the democratic process, to select leaders who reflect your values and will champion the causes that resonate with our community. Your vote is your voice—let it echo through the corridors of power this Super Tuesday. Vote Houston: Your City, Your Choice,

Port Houston, the bustling nerve center of the Houston Ship Channel, has long served as a strategic economic powerhouse, fueling both regional and national prosperity. This week marks a significant milestone in its illustrious journey, as the city has warmly welcomed Thomas Jones to the helm of its operations, following his

POLITICS: Thomas Jones: Steering Houston Toward a Brighter Economic Horizon as New Port Houston Commissioner

appointment as the newest Port Houston Commissioner by the Mayor and City of Houston.

Thomas Jones, a vanguard of societal progress and economic inclusivity, is no stranger to leadership roles that demand both vision and action. As the current president of the Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity, Jones has been instrumental in driving initiatives that aim to level the playing field for all. His recent retirement from a leading position at one of the nation's premier Black-owned tax and accounting firms has not diminished his zeal for advocacy; it has instead provided him with a new arena to effect change.

The Houston City Council's decision to choose Jones for one of its two influential seats on the Port Commission underscores the city's commitment to progressive leadership.

The Commission, which counts seven Harris County residents among its ranks, is pivotal in setting policies that guide Port Houston's trajectory. These unpaid stewards of the port, who serve

two-year terms with a cap of twelve years, are the architects of the future for the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel and its associated public facilities.

Port Houston's legacy as an economic catalyst is impressive, boasting the largest breakbulk facility in the area and two of the country's most efficient container terminals. The Port's dedication to maintaining a seamless and robust flow of commerce has not only uplifted the local economy but has also reinforced its stature in international trade. It's a commitment that Jones is poised to uphold and elevate.

An economic impact study by Martin Associates in 2022 painted a vivid picture of Port Houston's vast influence, highlighting its support for 1.54 million jobs in Texas and an additional 3.37 million nationwide. The ripple effects of the Port's activities contribute a staggering $439 billion in economic value to the state of Texas, with the national figure reaching an awe-inspiring $906 billion. Furthermore, the Houston Ship Channel's contribution to tax reve-

nue is equally remarkable, with nearly $10.6 billion flowing into state and local coffers and $62.8 billion bolstering the nation's treasury.

As Thomas Jones steps into his new role, he brings with him a wealth of experience, a commitment to justice, and an unyielding resolve to ensure Port Houston remains a beacon of economic opportunity. His vision is clear: to sustain the Port's legacy of excellence while charting a course for innovative growth and community engagement. Under Jones' guidance, Port Houston is set to navigate towards an even more prosperous and equitable future.

For Houstonians and onlookers alike, the appointment of Thomas Jones is a harbinger of continued success and social responsibility. As readers of Houston Style Magazine, we celebrate this new chapter and stand in anticipation of the great strides that are yet to come under the stewardship of such a dedicated leader.

The Houston Fire Department proudly welcomed 31 new firefighters into its esteemed ranks, marking a day of pride and promise for the city. The Class of 2023-C stood tall on February 22, 2024, as they took their Oath of Office in a stirring ceremony held at the Houston Community College Main Campus Auditorium.

LOCAL: HOUSTON'S BRAVEST: 31 NEW FIREFIGHTERS JOIN THE RANKS IN A CEREMONY OF COMMITMENT AND COURAGE

In a historic moment, Mayor John Whitmire, alongside Fire Chief Samuel Peña, honored the cadets who have dedicated themselves to protecting the community. The presence of the Mayor underscored the city's commitment to safety and the high regard in which it holds its first responders.

Chief Peña, a revered figure with 28 years of fire service and leadership of one of the nation's largest municipal fire departments, was present to witness the infusion of new talent and dedication into the department.

The event not only celebrated the new graduates but also served as a beacon of opportunity for aspiring firefighters. The upcoming "First Friday with a Houston Firefighter" event on

March 1, 2024, extends an invitation to those who wish to learn about the valor and dedication required to become a firefighter or emergency medical technician.

Houston takes immense pride in its fire department, which stands strong with nearly 3,900 personnel and a substantial annual budget that reflects the city's investment in public safety.

Chief Peña, who has led the HFD since December 19, 2016, after serving as fire chief in El Paso, Texas, embodies the leadership and experience that propels

the department forward.

The city's pledge to support and expand its team of first responders is unyielding, as Mayor Whitmire emphasizes the essential role they play in making Houston a great city. The addition of these 31 brave men and women to the @houston_fire family is not just a gain for the department but a testament to Houston's enduring spirit and commitment to community safety.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire has taken a pivotal step in transforming the city's transit system by nominating Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock to be the next Board Chair of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (Houston METRO), now officially with the green light from the City Council and METRO's board. With this historic nomination, Brock became the first Hispanic woman to helm Texas's largest transit entity, which boasts an expansive 1,309-square-mile coverage area and a significant $1.6 billion yearly budget.

Whitmire expressed confidence in Brock's ability to prioritize customers and deliver a reliable and safe public transportation system. "Elizabeth's results-driven approach and her keen understanding of the community's needs are exactly what METRO requires to progress. She is fully committed to enhancing the transit experience for Houstonians and aligns perfectly with our commitment to broaden mobility options across the city," stated Whitmire.

Brock's extensive experience in utility infrastructure planning and policy as Vice President at CenterPoint Energy, combined with her successful track record in customer service, business growth, and community initiatives across six states and over 100 cities, positions her as an ideal can-

didate for the role. Her prior leadership roles at Reliant Energy, Texas Southern University, and the University of Houston, where she earned her political science degree, have prepared her well for this challenge.

Embracing the responsibility, Brock said, "I'm honored by Mayor Whitmire's trust in me to lead METRO and to be the first Hispanic woman in this capacity reflects the mayor's vision for an inclusive, experienced, and diverse leadership. Working in tandem with the mayor, the METRO Board, and other government levels, I'm dedicated to evolving METRO into a paragon of transit excellence, focusing on accountability, transparency, and direct engagement with our customers to tailor a

public transit system that's accessible, clean, and a preferred choice for all."

A seasoned member of Houston's civic and business communities, Brock has contributed her expertise to the Houston First Corporation Board since 2017 and was

a key figure in Evolve Houston, promoting better air quality through the adoption of electric vehicles. Her past leadership includes chairing the Greater Houston Area Women's Chamber in 2019 and actively participating in the Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas.

Brock succeeded Sanjay Ramabhadran, whose tenure as Chair of METRO has concluded. Mayor Whitmire extends his gratitude to Ramabhadran for his valuable contributions to Houston's community.

This strategic appointment signals a new chapter for Houston METRO, as it steers towards a future of innovative, customer-focused, and sustainable transit solutions under Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock's guidance.

INATIONAL: JOB CORPS ADOPTS PROGRESSIVE STANCE ON MARIJUANA , ENHANCING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH

n an unprecedented move, the U.S. Department of Labor's Job Corps program has enacted a pivotal change in its marijuana testing rules, demonstrating a progressive shift towards the treatment of cannabis use among the youth. This modification aims to mitigate the repercussions of prior marijuana use on young individuals aspiring to join the federal workforce through the Job Corps training initiative.

Recognizing the evolving legal and social landscape of cannabis use, Job Corps has reformed its drug-screening policies. While maintaining a strict drug-free and alcohol-free environment, the program acknowledges that a history of cannabis use should not automatically obstruct opportunities for youth.

This stance is evident in the new approach to drug screening: upon entry, all Job Corps candidates undergo a mandatory drug test. A positive result leads to enrollment in educational and preventative services, followed by a subsequent screening approximately 40 days later.

The crux of the policy reform lies within this second test. Previously, a positive result would result in dismissal. Now, a more compassionate and logical framework is applied, where a second positive result for THC—the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis—will not

incur penalties if it reflects at least a 50% reduction from the initial test levels, indicating prior use rather than ongoing consumption.

In essence, the Job Corps centers are adopting a rehabilitative rather than punitive approach, aligning with the principle that individuals should not be defined by past actions but rather by their commitment

to personal growth and development. The program's officials are enthusiastic about the new policy, which came into effect on February 13, emphasizing that it will enable them to better support students on their path to transformation and success. This shift also sets a precedent for broader legislative changes, as the dialogue around the Cannabis Users’ Res-

toration of Eligibility (CURE) Act gains momentum. The act, which seeks to reduce discrimination against cannabis users in federal employment and security clearances, received strong support from the House Oversight Committee but awaits further action. Advocates for the CURE Act argue that its passage would not only bring fairness but also enhance the operations of federal agencies by widening the pool of eligible and talented candidates.

Job Corps' revised policy, coupled with the potential passage of the CURE Act, marks a significant step towards a future where past cannabis use is no longer a barrier to federal employment or educational opportunities.

As society continues to reevaluate its stance on cannabis, such initiatives are pivotal in fostering an inclusive environment that encourages personal development and acknowledges the multifaceted journey of every individual.

Readers of Houston Style Magazine are encouraged to engage with their representatives to support the CURE Act, advocating for a future that embraces change and provides equal chances for all to succeed.
