COMMENTARY

It Is Time to Renew the Spirit of the Emancipation Proclamation By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

J

anuary 1 begins the new year. It also marks the anniversary of a new America. On January 1, 1863, as the Civil War, the bloodiest of America’s wars, approached the end of its second year, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states, “are and henceforward shall be free.” The Proclamation was limited to fit wartime necessities. It applied only to the states that had seceded from and were at war with the United States, leaving slavery untouched in loyal border states. It also exempted the parts of the Confederacy that had already come under Northern control. And, of course, the freedom it promised depended on the victory of the North. Yet, the Proclamation’s effect was far more expansive than its terms. It transformed the war into a war of freedom. As the U.S. Archives summarizes, “Every advance of federal troops expanded the domain of freedom.” And of course, it dramatically aided the Union cause, with nearly 200,000 black soldiers and sailors fighting for the Union. The Proclamation was the beginning. Upon victory, the Congress passed three amendments to the Constitution -- the 13, 14 and 15th Amendments -- designed to finish the job of transforming the country that was, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, “half slave and half free” to one in which all were guaranteed -- under the constitution -- the” blessings of liberty.”

POLITICAL

P

olitics is in realignment. And perhaps the most underappreciated change is this: Based on recent research at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life, young voters, ages 18-29, played a significant role in the 2018 midterms and are poised to shape elections in 2020 and z. Ωat lower rates than older voters, particularly in midterm elections. While experts have often attributed this to apathy, a complicated set of reasons may explain low turnout, including barriers to access, suppression, waning civic education and historic disadvantages.

4

The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude; the 14th began to define the rights of citizens and guaranteed equal protection under the law; the 15th prohibited discrimination in the right to vote on the basis of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” (Ironically, the Constitution still does not guarantee the right to vote to all). The amendments, forced upon the defeated Southern states as a condition for re-entry into the union, launched the reconstruction that sought for a few short years to bring the country together. Newly empowered blacks joined with progressive whites to build coalitions that transformed state constitutions, guaranteeing the right to education, launching programs to provide more equal justice under the law. Sadly, the Reconstruction met with fierce reaction across the South. Segregation masters succeeded the slave masters. The Ku Klux Klan, formed by the elites of Southern communities, terrorized newly freed blacks. The right to vote was sabotaged by various tricks and traps, from the poll tax to unequally administered tests on the constitution, to simple threat and terror. In 1896, the Supreme Court to its shame ruled that apartheid -- the mythic “separate but equal” standard -- was legal in the United States. By the turn of the century, segregation was the law of the land. It took 100 years and the historic civil rights movement to overturn that reaction, and to begin to reclaim the promise of equal justice under the law and the revive the right to vote. The civil rights

struggle -- united the movement of courageous citizens on the ground with the force of Lyndon Johnson in the White House -- produced, among other legislation, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act that brought America closer to its promise Today, we once more see the stirrings of reaction against that reconstruction. Racial division, stoked cynically from the highest offices in the land, is once more on the rise. African Americans, Latinos, Jews, Muslims, gays, women -- all once more feel the rise of resentment and often of hate. The Supreme Court has gutted a critical part of the Voting Rights Act. States under reactionary governors are inventing new ways to restrict access to the vote. Will this reaction be as successful as that which undermined the promise of the Emancipation Proclamation? America, I believe, is better than that. Our democracy is stronger than it was then. We can mobilize and vote in large numbers to keep expanding the domain of freedom On this January 1, let us remember the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by the greatest of our presidents, a Republican, and devote ourselves to redeeming its promise.

Young Voters Are Going to be Key to Winning 2020 CNN.com/StyleMagazine.com Newswire

Despite these headwinds, 2018 marked a turning point. In 2018, the youth vote increased in all 42 states for which youth voting data is available, according to the analysis by researchers at Tufts’ Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE). Based on this available data, which represents 94% of the American youth population, Tisch College researchers estimate 28.2% of young people nationwide voted in 2018 -- more than double the national youth turnout in 2014.

January 2 – January 8, 2020

Turnout among college students -- an important subset of the youth vote -- was even more impressive in 2018, at 40.3%. Research also showed that young voters preferred Democrat House candidates by 35 points, a massive margin that helped Democrats win back the House and far exceeded the highest gap of 27 points from 2008. National statistics set the scene, but the stories on the ground are even more compelling. Both parties have long tried to activate young voters, but with limited success. In 2018, however, Katie Porter, a law professor at the University of California, Irvine who won California’s 45th congressional district, hired an organizer specifically for campus outreach and campaigned on college campuses in the area. In April 2018, Porter’s campaign had been listed in the Youth Electoral Significance Index, produced by Tisch College’s CIRCLE, as one of the top congressional races where young people could make the biggest impact, because of its youth population, prevalence of colleges, voter registration rates, historic turnout rates and turnout patterns where young people historically vote differently than older

www.stylemagazine.com

voters. Indeed, turnout in precincts on or near the UC Irvine campus surged in 2018, and outreach among young people has been credited as one reason for her victory. Sen. Jon Tester’s win in Montana and Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s primary victory in the Massachusetts 7th District were also powered by youth turnout, according to research from CIRCLE. Campaigns go where the votes are, and it’s still true that older voters are more reliable voters, especially in midterm and off-year elections. But increasing youth participation can have a tremendous impact on elections at all levels. And research tells us that voting is habit-forming. Those who begin to vote early are more likely to vote often and throughout their lives. One election cycle isn’t a trend, but youth activists are certainly trendsetters when it comes to driving national conversations around public policy. On issues ranging from climate change to gun violence to voter suppression, young people are speaking up and encouraging their peers to register and vote, as we saw most recently during the climate strikes.

COMMENTARY Hate Crimes Demand More Action

By Marc H. Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League

Marc Morial

I

f this incident was motivated by hate, which news reports indicate, then this is another incident in a long line of violent incidents targeting the Jewish community. This hatred is a disease and right now we are experiencing an epidemic. Leaders must lead and call out hate wherever åand whenever it rears its ugly head – regardless of politics. This is about principle.” — Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and National Director, Anti-Defamation League For the third time in just over a year, the nation is reeling in the face of a deadly mass shooting that appears to have been motivated by anti-Semitism. Earlier this week, a man and woman killed a police detective near a Jersey City cemetery and then stormed a near-

by Jewish market, shooting and killing three people there. The two were killed in a subsequent shootout with police. The suspects have been linked to a religious sect that includes factions designated as anti-Semitic hate groups. In the stolen van they were driving, investigators found a note that contained anti-Semitic and anti-police sentiments. Similar sentiments were found in social media posts linked to the suspects. Terrifying trend In April of this year, a gunman opened fire in a San Diego synagogue on the last day of Passover, killing a 60-yearold woman and wounding three other people, including a rabbi and an 8-yearold girl. Shortly before the attack, the gunman posted an anti-Semitic and racist manifesto on social media, citing conspiracy theories, expressing admiration for the gunmen who perpetrated the anti-Muslim killings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Six months earlier, in Pittsburgh, 11 people were killed at the Tree of Life Synagogue. That shooter, too, deeply enmeshed in anti-Semitic conspiracy

theories on social media. These acts are part of a horrifying three-year trend that has coincided with a spike in course and heated racial rhetoric in political discourse. It is one that demands action on several fronts, including gun policy, moderation of social media terms of service, and a sweeping reexamination of racial and religious intolerance. Rise of violence As a child of the Civil Rights Movement and the leader of the nation’s largest racial justice organization, I have witnessed the recent rise of white nationalism with equal parts dismay and a sickening sense of familiarity. Our nation’s history is sullied with racial and religious intolerance and violence. What has sustained us, as famously expressed by Martin Luther King, Jr., is that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. In this particular period of history, the arc seems especially long. Leaked emails recently revealed that one of the president’s closest advisors, Stephen Miller, has cited and promoted white nationalist ideologies and conspiracy theories

www.stylemagazine.com

about “White genocide,” the criminality of immigrants, and the reviled eugenics movement. Congressional response to the emails has been almost nonexistent. Higher than recorded Meanwhile, personal attacks motivated by bias or prejudice reached a 16-year high last year, according to the FBI. More than 4,300 attacks on people, motivated by racial or religious hatred, were recorded by the FBI. State and local police forces are not required to report hate crimes to the F.B.I., and as many as half the victims of hate crimes never file a report, so the actual number of hate-fueled assaults is significantly higher than the official record. Love and protect Lately it seems that the atrocities and outrages of racism and intolerance are falling too fast and too frequently to respond appropriately. But we must not lose sight of our ideals as Americans – as brothers and sisters and parents and neighbors – to love and protect one another.

California woman filed a $300,000 lawsuit against Marriott on Monday, claiming she was singled out because of her race when asked to sign a “no party policy” before checking into her Portland hotel room. The 51-year-old woman, Felicia Gonzales, who is black, said the front desk clerk at the Residence Inn by Marriott Portland Downtown/Convention Center told her that all guests had to sign the policy, The Oregonian reports. But Gonzales said she soon learned that wasn’t true as she claimed she witnessed white guests check in after her who weren’t asked to sign the policy. The two-page no party policy says it was established to inform all guests of noise limits and “not to insinuate any distrust in the ‘average’ guest,” according to a copy provided by Gonzales’ attorneys.

Castro’s announcement that he will drop out of the crowded field competing for the right to challenge President Trump comes after he threatened to suspend his White House bid if he didn’t qualify for the November debate, failed to qualify for the December round, and laid off campaign employees in New Hampshire and South Carolina. If he had won the primary and the general elections, he would’ve been the first Latino president. Despite being one of the first contenders to declare their candidacy, the Obama administration-era housing and urban development secretary and former mayor of San Antonio, 45, failed to gain momentum in the polls and fundraising. Yet, his long-shot status had one advantage: It provided him the opportunity to help push the conversation to the Left.

slew of new laws are set to take effect in Texas on Jan. 1, 2020, on myriad issues — from stricter provisions in reporting harassment at colleges and universities to more stringent reporting on data breaches to ending surprise medical fees. The new laws all were passed during the 2019 session of the Texas Legislature. Among them: House Bill 914 was passed to amend the Bingo Enabling Act. The change eliminates the 5 percent prize fee for non-cash prizes valued at more than $5. Come next year, the law also will require licensed authorized organizations that conduct bingo games to collect the 5 percent fee on cash prizes and also pay 50 percent of the fees collected to the Texas Commission Lottery each quarter. Under the new law, counties and cities will be able to opt in to receive prize fees as well.

s investigators look into whether celebratory gunfire truly led to a family matriarch’s death during a New Year’s celebration, a former Houston police investigator said the ballistics of the case will be key in looking for the shooter. Philippa Ashford, 61, died while she watched her family and others celebrate 2020 outdoors in the Laurel Oaks subdivision in north Harris County. Typically, celebratory gunfire cases are difficult to solve, but not impossible, according to former longtime HPD officer Mark Stephens. He said the projectile that investigators recover will be entered in the ATF’s National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, or NIBIN. It will be compared to other bullets and firearms already entered. Amid the investigation early Wednesday, officials went from house to house looking for shell casings and talking to residents in an effort to identify the origin of the gunshot.

A report out Monday from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund found Texas already led the nation in officer fatalities in 2019. The total was up from 11 deaths last year. Seven of the officers who died this year were killed by firearms, six were killed in traffic-related incidents, and five of the fatalities were considered “other.” Marcia Ferranto, the memorial fund’s CEO, said that usually means “some kind of a medical event.” She said the breakdown is largely on par with national trends: There were 49 firearms-related fatalities and 43 traffic-related ones in 2019.

Former president Barack Obama and Donald Trump both tied for the top spot, both garnering a total of 18 percent from respondents. This marks Obama’s 12th time as the most admired man in America, while Donald Trump was voted in for first time, even after he was recently impeached on two articles, abuse of power and obstruction of congress. Gallup has conducted the poll since 1948, asking Americans across the country to vote for public figures that represent admirable qualities. This year’s results were gathered over an almost two-week period from December 2-15. 41 percent of Democrats, 12 percent of Independents, and only 3 percent of Republicans choosing Obama, and 45 percent of Republicans, 10 percent of Independents, and 2 percent of Democrats opting for Trump.

at the next event.” Helping others achieve their goals is a personal quest for Ned. Thirteen years ago her life changed forever. The love of her life, Caldwell Ned, died. Naturally, she was heartbroken and devastated by his loss but she couldn’t stay that way. Her world was dark and cloudy and she had to come out of the fog to help her daughters and herself. She did that by removing the negativity from her life and adding more positivity. “I vowed to be an example and speak only positive thoughts and talk about my goals.” Ned continued, “In consistently doing this people were drawn to me and eventually I was encouraged to write a book that may one day reach the masses. The book (Evolve) was a goal on my vision board and became a reality in 2016. In 2018, the EVB (Evolutionary Vision Board) workshop was birth and is a spin-off from the book.”

E Mary Ned

ach year is an opportunity to reset your life. Start with examining the past year looking at your accomplishments with the goals you set in correlations with your failures. Asking yourself questions like “Are you happy with the progress or lack thereof that you made?” “How could you have done things differently?” “What do you need to do now?” The last question is most important because that is when the reset starts. That is when you get a new vision and start to make new goals. Once that develops in your mind it is time for them to take form visually on paper with the creation of your vision board for 2020.

She started with herself and when her dreams came to fruition she started pushing her daughters to chart their vision. Each year they write their goals and monitor each other’s goals quarter-by-quarter. “We have consistently witnessed the manifestation of our dreams & visions year after year. It encourages and excites me to help more people become aware of vision boarding and to take them beyond the board so daily life won’t take their focus away,” a grateful Ned commented.

“Goals assist in keeping one’s focus when life seems to get complicated. The end results are you began to live your dreams and become happier with yourself,” said public speaker and author Mary Ned.

A vision board is great to have but a results board is even better. A results board is just like what it sounds. It shows the results of your goals and can act as a tool to keep you pushing towards your goals. According to Ned, you want to make a results board when 75% of your goals have been obtained then create a new vision board with the remaining 25%.

Achieving your new goals takes a plan and a vision board as a visual representation of your plan. Developing your vision board takes time and effort, as you look closer at your inner self to really find out what you want out of life and figuring out how to attain it. Making a visual representation of your goals can be complicated, however, Ned takes the challenges away and guides you through the process. “Without writing your goals and vision, the busyness of life makes you forget your desires that you want to accomplish. Also subconsciously you can’t prioritize and strategize,” Ned said about why goals should be written down or displayed on vision boards. She offers three easy steps to get you started on your vision board. The following steps are: • Select four goals you would like to achieve • Create a strategic plan and set deadlines • Create a daily agenda and journal your progress at the end of each day In addition to following these steps,

8

Making a vision board is one of the best ways to start your 2020 off right. Start now to make that plan to reach your goals and track your progress.

Ned suggests getting an accountability partner. They need to be on the same wavelength as you in life. Ned hosts periodic workshops where she guides people in creating their vision board. Supplies provided are old magazines, papers, scissors, tape, and glue. All you need to bring is an open mind and your goals.

January 2 – January 8, 2020

“I’ve created a workbook for participants to utilize daily,” said Ned who based the workshops off her book Evolve. “It consists of writing affirmations, creating a daily schedule, listening to suggested audiobooks and books to read that will increase their personal development. I also give them the opportunity to be featured on my workshop IG page and invite them to be highlighted

www.stylemagazine.com

“I would like to challenge everyone to write your subconscious thoughts, dreams, and goals down. Then prioritized them on lists, adding deadlines to each. The next step is to create a plan geared towards taking action that is in alignment with accomplishing your goals. In order for the goals to manifest you must look at your vision board every day! If you do this your subconscious mind won’t let you stop thinking about it and action will soon follow! So don’t wait, Get started today on having 20/20 vision and accomplishing your 2020 goals.” By the time 2021 rolls around you will be too proud of the results. Don’t just keep your goals in your head. Chart your vision now and see a brighter future in 2020.

Turner Sworn In for Second Term By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor

Turner and Daughter

ylvester Turner officially began his second term as mayor for the city of Houston when he, City Controller Chris Brown, and Houston City Council were sworn in on January 2, 2020, before a packed house at the Wortham Theater. Mayor Turner won the honor of continuing to lead Houston after defeating opponent Tony Buzbee in the run-off election. While his daughter Ashley Turner held the Holy Bible Mayor Turner took the oath of office by United States District Judge for the Southern District of Texas, Vanessa Gilmore, followed by Controller Brown who also was sworn in by Judge Gilmore. Mayor Turner

then administered the oath of office to the council. “Four years is not a long time, but I firmly believe that if we work together over the next four years, we can set the stage for this decade,” Turner opened in his inaugural address. Turner laid out his plan for Houston that included a concentration on the mounting street repairs, reducing the homeless population, improving flood mitigation projects, and continuing to work with Complete Communities initiative. “I look forward to working with you all over the next four years, and with

the city council, including the record number of women who will be serving in leading positions,” Turner said.

ing, “God bless Houston, God bless America, and the best for Houston has yet to come.”

The 2020-2024 council makes history for Houston for its diversity and the number of women in office. Currently, there are eight members on the council. Nine of the sixteen members are new to the council. Once the fate of District B is decided the sixteen member council will be complete and have the addition of one more woman, Jerry Davis remains in office until his predecessor is announced.

Immediately after the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Turner and the new council retreated to City Hall to hold the first meeting of the year. During that meeting, the council confirmed the mayor’s nomination of Council Members Dave Martin as Houston’s Mayor Pro Tem and Martha Castex-Tatum as Houston’s Vice Mayor Pro Tem. The two will represent the mayor when he is not present.

Mayor Turner closed his speech say-

TRAVEL

Top 10 Travel Destinations to Start the New Decade By Family Features

F

or many, traveling offers an opportunity to disconnect from the everyday and experience new places and cultures. With the beginning of a new decade, it is the perfect time to start deciding your next travel adventures. When booking your future destinations, consider these spots and tips recommended by travel expert and Bank of America ambassador, Lee Abbamonte, the youngest American to visit every country plus the North and South Poles. England, Germany, Scotland, Azerbaijan and more While technically more than one place, these locations have one thing in common: Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2020. The international soccer event marks the first time the games will be held across the continent in 12 host cities. “The year is a big one for sports,” Abbamonte said. “From sporting events in Europe to Japan, it is a fun year for travel and to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime experiences.” Australia From its deserts to tropical beaches, Australia is a beautiful country to explore. While many people might be familiar with the Sydney Opera House and the unique wildlife, there are many hidden gems in Australia. “I’ve been to Australia 10 times and I still

10

can’t get enough,” Abbamonte said. “One of my favorite cities is Melbourne. While it’s one of the largest cities in Australia, the heart of the city is hidden and secretive. It comes to life when you visit the alleys, laneways and arcades. The vibrant city has so much to offer: cafes, a unique street culture and street art.” New Zealand If you are going to New Zealand for the first time, Abbamonte recommends boogie boarding down the sand dunes, hiking up a volcano and visiting the Moeraki Boulders. However, if you are really interested in getting the blood pumping, take a leap from Nevis Bungy near Queenstown. It is among the highest bungy jumping experiences in the world, measuring 440 feet. Mexico “Mexico City has two of my favorite things – great food and sports,” Abbamonte said. “The street tacos are to die for, and I love going to soccer games at Estadio Azteca.” In 2020, there will be many festivals to explore. The city is a cultural hub with music, theater, dance and food events throughout the year. While experiencing the festivities, it is also an opportune time to take a step back and enjoy Chapultepec Park. Brazil One of Abbamonte’s favorite waterfalls is Iguazu Falls located on the border of Brazil and Argentina. While Iguazu Falls might

be well known, the falls themselves are truly unique. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls that stretch over approximately 1.68 miles. The Devil’s Throat is the tallest fall with a drop of more than 262 feet. While traveling internationally can be fun and exhilarating, there are also places throughout the United States that offer memorable activities: Scottsdale, Arizona If you enjoy being outdoors, Scottsdale is an ideal place to visit. There are many trails to explore in Camelback Mountain, Papago Park and Hole in the Rock. After hiking, follow Abbamonte’s example and golf at The Short Course at Mountain Shadows. “Scottsdale has some of the most beautiful sunsets in the States, and from The Short Course at Mountain Shadows, I get to enjoy the view while practicing my swing,” he said. Boston, Massachusetts “I love sports, so I visit Boston regularly for the professional games,” Abbamonte said. “I’m also fortunate that Boston is a beautiful city I can enjoy along the way.” Boston is one of the oldest cities in the country. Founded in 1630, Boston is filled with history, museums and universities. If you are interested in a more unique attraction, check out the Warren Anatomical Museum, which is one of the last of its kind in the United States.

Portland, Oregon What makes Portland unique are the bizarre and wonderful things you can do when you visit. For example, you can try bone marrow ice cream, stop by Mill Ends Park (the world’s smallest park) or attach your wish to The Wishing Tree. “Portland is absolutely beautiful,” Abbamonte said. “It has a bit of everything – restaurants, bars, parks – and I enjoy the people watching. Portland has some of the nicest people while maintaining an edgy vibe.” Tampa, Florida Tampa might be known for its spring break party scene, but it has so much more to offer. For example, the city’s zoos and aquariums provide opportunities to interact directly with animals. Then you can take a break at Clearwater Beach, which is known for its soft, white sand and calm waters. Santa Barbara, California “I go to Santa Barbara when I want to recharge,” Abbamonte said. “I enjoy the food, walking around, talking to the locals and even watching a football game or two.” There are wine tours, zoos, beaches, museums and restaurants. While taking in the city, also make time to visit the hidden gems such as Knapp’s Castle ruins. Find more solutions to make your travel goals attainable at bankofamerica.com/ Premium.

Civil Rights Icon & Congressman John Lewis Diagnosed With Stage 4 Cancer By BlackDoctor.org

C

ivil rights icon and US Democratic Rep. John Lewis of Georgia known for fighting for our rights has been diagnosed with the greatest fight of his life, stage 4 pancreatic cancer, his office announced Sunday. “This month in a routine medical visit, and subsequent tests, doctors discovered Stage IV pancreatic cancer. This diagnosis has been reconfirmed,” he said. Lewis, who turned 79 this year, will undergo treatment for it, his office said. “I have been in some kind of fight — for freedom, equality, basic human rights — for nearly my entire life. I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now,” Lewis said in a statement. The long-serving Democrat has represented Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, which includes much of Atlanta, since first being elected in 1986. He’s serving in his 17th term in the House. Lewis, who as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was one of the “Big Six” leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington, played many key roles in the Civil Rights Movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation in the United States. Lewis has been awarded many honorary degrees and is the recipient of numerous awards from high-ranking national and international institutions, including the highest civilian honor of the United States, the Presidential

Congressman John Lewis

Medal of Freedom. He acknowledged that he may miss a few votes during that period, “but with God’s grace I will be back on the front lines soon.” “I have decided to do what I know to do and do what I have always done: I am going to fight it and keep fighting for the beloved community,” Mr. Lewis said. “We still have many bridges to cross.” Stage 4 pancreatic cancer means the cancer has spread to other organs, typically the liver or the lungs. Cancer can’t be cured at this point, but there

are still treatment options. Treatment during this stage is focused on extending life and improving the quality of life. According to the American Cancer Society’s estimates for 2019, about 57,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 46,000 people are expected to die of it. The median survival rate for stage 4 pancreatic cancer is between two and six months. But keep in mind that an outlook for an individual depends on many factors. Your medical team can provide more accurate information

based on your personal health. Older people are as likely to respond well to treatment as younger ones, though life expectancy among older people with stage 4 pancreatic cancer is shorter. This is especially true if a person’s health is further complicated by other conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure. “While I am clear-eyed about the prognosis, doctors have told me that recent medical advances have made this type of caner treatable in many cases, that treatment options are no longer as debilitating as they once were, and that I have a fighting chance,” he added Friends and colleagues of Lewis offered their support. “If there’s one thing I love about @ RepJohnLewis, it’s his incomparable will to fight,” tweeted former President Barack Obama. “I know he’s got a lot more of that left in him. Praying for you, my friend.” “If there’s anyone with the strength and courage to fight this, it’s you John,” former President Bill Clinton tweeted. “Hillary and I love you, and we join with millions of other Americans in praying for you and your family.” Lewis said he will return to Washington in the coming days to resume work and begin his treatment plan, “which will occur over the next several weeks.” Read more online at BlackDoctor. org. create your own compositions, new tools can support your efforts. Ghost of Playoff Past Texans look to help some former Oilers fans get over the hurt of the 1993 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs By Brian Barefield, Sports Editor

On Saturday at NRG Stadium, the Houston Texans will do their best to try and bring a small amount of peace to some of the drama lifelong Houston Oilers fans have had to endure since the 1993 NFL Wildcard Playoff weekend. Most of them can tell you where they were and exactly what they were doing on January 3, 1993. “We had been keeping up with the game at church and when the Oilers went into halftime up 28-3, we were

Eat well. Regardless what eating plan you choose, recognize the importance of nutrition in your weight loss program. Weight loss occurs when you burn more calories than you consume, so build your menu around nutrient-rich foods that fill you up. Strive for a well-balanced diet that encompasses all the food groups and, if necessary, discuss your goals with a doctor or nutritionist who can help you identify the best foods to enjoy and those to avoid. Consider a supplement. If managing cravings or your appetite hinders your weight loss, a supplement may be a good solution. For example, RiduZone is a patented supplement that gives your body more of a substance it already creates called Oleoylethanolamide (OEA). In essence, OEA tells your brain you are full and it’s time to stop eating. Developed and endorsed by Dr. Jay Yepuri, a board-certified gastroenterologist, the

supplement is a non-stimulant that may help you feel full faster to reduce caloric intake and boost metabolism to burn stored fat. Get active. Creating a calorie deficit is necessary to lose weight, and increasing your physical activity helps ensure you’re burning calories. However, getting active isn’t just about playing the numbers game. Physical activity also promotes overall wellness with numerous physical and mental health benefits, including improving circulation and stimulating feel-good endorphins. Stay committed. It’s easy to fall off your weight loss plan when unexpected circumstances arise. Give yourself a little grace and permission for occasional misses so you stay motivated to get back to your program. That may mean waiting for a cold to pass and doing less strenuous workouts at home or making extra healthy choices at mealtime in advance of an indulgent event. To help make keeping your commitments easier, consider an option like RiduZone to boost your body’s natural appetite-curbing power. Find more information to help jump-

all saying to ourselves, ‘We got this,’ said retired Navy Chief Paul Crampton who is a fan of the Oilers and Texans. “By the time we hopped in the church fan and turned the radio on the game the Bills were up 38-35. Jesus himself could have just taken me right then.”

“I’m not going down that road. Holy smokes, that was 26 years ago,” Texans head coach Bill O’ Brien said to the media. The game will be played in 2020. So, we got a lot of work to do, we’ve got a very tough opponent coming in here that’s played very well.”

It has been called “The Comeback” by a lot of NFL analysts and fans who were around to witness the Buffalo Bills erased a 35-3 deficit to defeat the Houston Oilers 41-38 in the 1993 Wildcard game.

Houston will look to get past some of its own playoff miscues as they have come up short since 2015 with a 1-3 record over the last four playoff games. The last being a 21-7 defeat to the Colts last year at home. Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has learned a lot since that dreadful Indianapolis loss and is better prepared and knows what to expect playing in only his second playoff game in his career.

This weekend when the Texans (106) play the Buffalo Bills (10-6) in the first game of the 2020 NFL Playoffs, they won’t focus on the past but are aware that there will be a lot of fans in attendance who still won’t talk about that game to this day. They will all be rooting for Houston to exercise those demons of the past.

“Every play matters,” Watson said. “You don’t really know it until you actually experienced that, and that’s what we experienced last year.”

start your weight management program at TryRiduZone.com. What is OEA? Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) is a metabolite of oleic acid, a naturally produced substance that interacts with appetite-controlling receptors in the small intestine to signal the brain you are full. It also helps boost metabolism. However, as a result of food choices and excess body fat, naturally produced OEA may require supplementation to achieve the desired effect on appetite or body fat. Created to mimic this naturally occurring metabolite, RiduZone is the only weight management supplement that contains OEA as an ingredient. Its production has been reviewed and is accepted as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. Less fat A clinical study published in the “Journal of Lipid Research” shows higher blood levels of OEA, which is derived from oleic acid-rich olive oil, correlate to lower amounts of body fat. This means weight loss results may be more visible.

This weekend’s game also marks the return of Texans defensive leader J.J. Watt. He had been out for a little more than two months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. His return may give the team and fans the emotional lift needed to defeat the Bills. “I’m really excited about it,” Watt said about his return. “Any time you’re away from the game and you get a chance to go back into, you have so much appreciation, so much excitement for it.” Time may not heal all wounds, but a Texans victory over the Bills would be just what the Oiler/Texans fans would need to cure the hurt they endured watching the Bills celebrate one of the most impossible comebacks of alltimes.

BOOK

“The Broken Road: George Wallace and a Daughter’s Journey to Reconciliation By Peggy Wallace Kennedy with Justice H. Mark Kennedy © 2019, Bloomsbury $28.00 / $38.00 Canada By Terri Schlichenmeyer

T

he path your parents first set you on is not the path you ended up taking. Somewhere along the way, you veered to the left or stepped to the right. You found your own groove, made your own decisions, and made adjustments while you learned where you were going. And as in the new book “The Broken Road” by Peggy Wallace Kennedy (with Justice H. Mark Kennedy), it was essential to know where you came from. She never doubted that her Daddy loved her. Still, when Peggy Wallace Kennedy was growing up, her father was absent more than he was present, even when he was in the room: George Wallace’s political promise to himself as a young man consumed him until campaigning became an obsession. He was away for much of Kennedy’s early life, meeting prospective constituents and asking for votes. After he lost the 1958 Alabama Governor’s seat to an opponent who was “racist to the heart,” the obsession grew and festered. Before then, says Kennedy, when her father was a judge, he was known for fairness and equality in the courtroom but when Wallace lost that election, something changed in his mind. He

started telling people that he was a segregationist, he began using words that were shocking, and his behavior attracted voters to his side. He all but abandoned his wife and family, and focused only on winning the next time. Kennedy says that once the Wallaces were ensconced in the Governor’s Mansion in 1962, she thought everything was fine until she learned of the violence happening throughout their state and,

though she was just a child and somewhat shielded from her father’s actions by her strong, tenderhearted mother, she couldn’t believe her Daddy would allow that. After her mother’s death, however, when Wallace renewed his decision to run for President, Kennedy’s eyes were opened and she wished she could stand for racial equality by standing up to him. But by “the fall of 1968,” she says, “I was neither white nor black. The color

of my skin was Wallace.” Absolutely, “The Broken Road” is a book of a thousand emotions. Anger, disgust, outrage – of course, you may remember those. Keep going: deep sadness rings this tale, but a sense of satisfaction may be found, too, as pieces of a 50-plus-yearold puzzle fall into place. Also in author Peggy Wallace’s hands, the story of her mother is told with steely inspiration, while other passages hold a tinge of droll Well-Bless-Your-Heart zingers that are delightfully tucked in. Mostly, though, this book seems to be about teasing apart the years, trying to understand why and how what happened, happened, and reconciling what was with what is. It’s a child’s-eye view of history with an adult’s careful perspective, finalized as Kennedy writes of spiritual generosity and the forgiveness her father received toward the end of his life, and the tender friendships she has with those he hurt. Love, politics, the tumultuous ‘60s, current events, it’s all in this can’t-miss biography. “The Broken Road” is paved with grace. Share this story online at stylemagazine.com.

FRENCHY’S SAUSAGE

‘Percy “Frenchy” Creuzot, New Orleans native, came to Houston in 1965 to work as a traveling salesman. His ambitions quickly shifted to food, and on July 3rd, 1969, he and his wife Sallie opened up a po-boy shop bearing his nickname on Scott Street, just a block from the University of Houston and not far from TSU. Frenchy’s Sausage Company, Inc. (FSCI) was originally created to produce Chaurice, a Creole Hot Sausage for the restaurant. In 1977, as the demand for Chaurice grew beyond the restaurant’s needs, Frenchy encouraged his son, Percy “King” Creuzot III to join him in the family business. Frenchy passed away in the summer of 2010, and now King heads the family business. In keeping with family tradition, King recruited his son, Percy “P.C.” Creuzot IV, to also join him. Today, FSCI has grown from a small sausage manufacturer to a proud full-service food service distribution business specializing in Creole cooking products. Frenchy’s has a wide assortment of products which are available in nearly 250 H-E-B stores.”
