COMMENTARY

America Leads The World In Gun Violence G

By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

un violence spiked across the country in 2020, the most violent years in decades. 19,000 were killed in shootings, the highest death toll in 20 years (and that does not include gun suicides). Mass shootings -- defined as four or more shot in an incident -- also rose drastically to over 600. Chicago’s 769 homicides in 2020 were, according to ABC News, “more homicides than in all but one year in more than two decades.” The 4,033 shooting victims were also drastically higher. The spike in Chicago was echoed in other big cities like Detroit, Washington, D.C., New York and Atlanta and in smaller cities like Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Rockford, Illinois. In all these cities, the victims are disproportionately people of color. The new year started off where the old ended, with 30 people shot and five killed in Chicago over the holiday weekend. We are killing one another in larger numbers in the midst of the national pandemic. The experts agree on the underlying causes. The COVID-19 economic devastation increased misery, anger, and fear. More and more found themselves under harsh pressure, unable to keep the roof over their heads, get adequate schooling for the young, secure decent health care and adequate food. The pandemic also caused a severe cutback in violence prevention programs, in conflict de-escalation services. The George Floyd murder and recurrent police violence exacerbated the tensions. And most important of all, of course, is America’s perverse addiction to guns. Twenty-twenty witnessed

4

record sales of guns across the country. There are 5 million new gun owners in America. Sensible gun regulations have been blocked at the federal and state level. In too many instances, state legislatures have blocked the efforts of cities to regulate guns. Guns are not made in Chicago. There are no gun ranges. Guns are brought in across state lines. The result is, frankly, absurd. The ban on assault weapons, weapons designed to kill people in large numbers in warfare, has been repealed. States across the country allow open carry and camouflaged carry. Protesters surrounded the Michigan legislature armed with rifles and guns. Others threatened and began to plot an armed kidnapping of the governor, protesting her sensible COVID restrictions. At Donald Trump’s calling, the streets of Washington, D.C., will be filled with protesters, many of them armed. This is yet another example of how a rabid minority -- dispensing lots of cash and armies of lobbyists -- can spurn the will of the majority. The majority of Americans want sensible gun control laws. Now, however, there is a yawning partisan divide with Democrats and Independents supporting stronger gun control and Republican support waning. With gun violence spiking and political disputes turning into armed confrontations, it is past time for real leadership to step forward. Mike Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, has shown the way. As a presidential candidate, he put forth a

January 07 – January 13, 2021

sensible comprehensive reform agenda. As a private citizen, he has helped to support groups calling for reform. He understands, more than most, that gun violence takes far more victims than those who die. It is a major public health crisis, leaving thousands permanently disabled and in need of care. The incoming administration inherits staggering catastrophes that it must address. Surely one of these is the growing gun violence that terrorizes our streets. This administration should push America to make a real choice about gun violence. Do we want to allow more and more violence, to witness political disputes turning into violent exchanges of gunfire? Or will we make a commitment to making our streets safer with police not having to worry about being outgunned by the violent. Banning assault weapons should be a no-brainer. Cracking down on the shipping of guns across state lines is another. Real investment in violence prevention services must be increased. Our schools should be teaching the practice and praising the

www.StyleMagazine.com

courage of nonviolence. From its endless wars to the spiking gun violence on its streets, America leads the world in violence. This is not a race we want to run or to win. It is time for the majority to be heard.

NAACP Houston Branch Condemns City Councilman – Greg Travis By Jo-Carolyn Goode www.StyleMagazine.com

Houston City Councilman – Greg Travis with Houston Businesswomen and Philanthropist – Laurie Robinson

ust because you can say something doesn’t mean you should. Houston City Councilman Greg Travis recently said something he shouldn’t have. Taking to his personal social media account on Facebook Travis posted a photo of former First Lady Michelle

Harvard because of affirmative action. She was born with her qualifications,” he added. Of course, these comments had a lot of people talking including some calling for his resignation. Travis has refused to resigned and refused to apologize for his remarks that also included derogatory words against Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. The NAACP is joining others to demand that action be taken against Travis. In a statement about the post the NAACP said: “Recently, District G Houston City Councilman Greg Travis made discriminatory statements against Black Women and women in general. Disparaging remarks that he published in his social media posts were directed to Houston businesswoman and philanthropist, Laurie Robinson. Ms. Robinson, Black female entrepreneur, is respected throughout Houston, and the nation. The councilman’s derogatory comments depicted Black women

as generally incompetent and immoral. Singling out former First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Elect Kamala Harris, he claimed that their high achievements are only due to affirmative action for which they qualified at birth, having been born Black, and on sexual favors to get ahead. Travis also made debasing comments about Hillary Clinton. Clearly, these comments reflect Greg Travis’s ignorance and racial bias. Obviously, someone of this mindset is not fit to represent, neither fairly serve Houston’s diverse populous. Detailed comments were made at the press conference on Tuesday. “ This has outraged communities across the nation, especially with Black women, but all the controversy doesn’t seem to faze Trump. He has blatantly said he wasn’t going to apologize for having an opinion or having free speech, The post has since been taken down by request of Mayor Sylvester Turner.

O

n August 7, 2020, the Houston Harris Heat Action Team (H3AT)—a collaboration between Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), the City of Houston, Harris County Public Health (HCPH), and The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC) — held a one-day urban heat island mapping effort with the help of 84 community scientists, and funding support from Lowe’s and Shell. The effort was part of the 2020 Heat Watch program led by CAPA Strategies and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and it resulted in a total of 320 square miles of Houston and Harris County being mapped by local residents. To collect the data, participants attached specially designed thermal sensors to their vehicles and traversed selected routes at three designated periods of time (6-7 AM, 3-4 PM, and 7-8 PM). The data and results—including a report, story map, and GIS mapping layers—are now available at www.H3AT.org. In addition to over 230,000 temperature and humidity measurements collected throughout the day, the project partners also leveraged satellite imagery to model temperature and heat index values—or “feels like” temperatures—across the study area. The hottest point measured in Houston/Harris County on mapping day was 103.3 degrees Fahrenheit located just southwest of the Galleria on Richmond Avenue near the intersection of Chimney Rock Road. Compared to 86.2 degrees Fahrenheit located 20 miles to the east on Woodforest Blvd in Channelview, this data illustrates a 17.1-degree difference in temperature across Houston/Harris County at the same time of day. Afternoon heat index values (or “feels like” temperatures) were calculated from temperature and humidity measurements, reached unhealthy levels (above 108 degrees Fahrenheit) across Houston and Harris County. “The data has identified Houston’s ‘hot spots’ and shows that some Houstonians are impacted by urban heat island effect more than others,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “We will work with partners to target our cooling and health strategies toward these neighborhoods to better help Houstonians beat the heat.” This urban heat island mapping campaign is included in Resilient Houston, the City’s comprehensive resilience strategy, as part of its commitment to making Houston neighborhoods greener and cooler. The results of this campaign can be used by the public and private sector in different ways to equitably reduce the impacts of urban heat, including (but not limited to):

· Better understanding heat-related health risks · Coordinating tree planting, shade structures, and cooling centers

· Informing design of parks, streets, housing, and other built infrastructure

“Science shows that there is real potential to reshape our built environment and cool our cities down where it’s needed most,” said Suzanne Scott, state director of The Nature Conservancy in Texas. “And now, armed with this data, local planners, developers, and environmental groups like ours will be able to leverage smart, cooling urban design strategies that offer multiple benefits—including climate resilience— for all residents, both human and wildlife.” “This collection of local, on-the-ground tem-

perature and humidity measurements is unprecedented in resolution and scale,” said Lisa Gonzalez, President of HARC. “We look forward to continue working with the Houston Harris Heat Action Team and other partners to combine this data with other observations and models in ways that will help improve health impacts and resilience to heat.” This project is part of a larger initiative, Heat Watch, led by CAPA Strategies and supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Program Office, who helped to fund the project. The Houston-Harris County team is one of 13 communities selected to participate in 2020 summer campaigns. For more info, visit CAPA Heat Watch.

The Mayor’s Chief Resilience Officer leads the city’s resilience efforts, including the development and implementation of the Resilient Houston strategy, launched in February 2020. Resilient Houston is focused on building resilience at every scale and is organized into five chapters, 18 goals and targets, and 62 actions. Each chapter identifies actions for increasing the resilience of Houstonians, neighborhoods, bayous, the city and the region. The vision for a more resilient Houston is a healthy place to live, an equitable, inclusive, and affordable city, a leader in climate adaptation, a city that builds up, not out, and a transformative economy that builds forward. Texas Democrates Call On Senator Ted Cruz To Resign

Nancy Pelosi

Speaker Of The House

Justice Department To Invistigate Cruz For Inciting Sedition and For Treason By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire

SELFISH MANS INJURED PRIDE: PRO-TRUMP TERRORIST STORM US CAPITAL By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com

D

uring the counting of the electoral college votes today, the Capitol was stormed in a desperate and half-baked play to overturn the election results. Our democracy will overcome the forces attempting to undermine it. Despite this effort, Joe Biden is the next president of the United States. Today, the Texas Democratic Party is calling on Ted Cruz to resign from the U.S. Senate for acting in bad faith and subsequently inciting treasonous and seditious acts among conspiracy theorists and domestic terrorists. Texas Democrats are also calling on the Justice Department to investigate the actions that led to the violence, the role of elected officials, and specifically Ted Cruz’s involvement.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa Issued The Following Statement: “The American people have spoken, and Joe Biden will be the next president. That is how democracy works. Countless election challenges by Trump and his allies have failed. Democrats, Republicans and independents alike have agreed that our democracy must come before any party, and the United States Congress will soon take the next step of formally

ratifying the will of the American people and certifying the election results. “Today is a shock, but not a surprise. In the weeks since Ted Cruz declared his intentions, many have warned of the devastating harm that deceitful rhetoric can and will have. Nevertheless, Ted Cruz acted in bad faith by leveraging fringe theories and blatant disinformation to challenge the legitimacy of the 2020 election results and position himself in the 2024 Republican presidential primary. This is not politics as usual. This is a challenge to the foundations of our country. “Texas Democrats call on Ted Cruz to resign from office immediately. Cruz’s actions have undermined our democracy, inspired treasonous, seditious acts, and brought shame to Texas. The tragic results of his actions will reverberate for generations. By leading the objection to the Electoral College certification, all the while knowing the devastating consequences, he has demonstrated he is not fit to serve in the U.S. Senate. “Furthermore, the Justice Department must investigate the violence that took place in the U.S. Capitol today, and Cruz’s involvement in the matter.”

W

ednesday, January 6, 2021, will go down as one of the darkest days in American History. A sitting U.S. President incited people for months with lies about how the election was stole from him and was unfair igniting the angry in people to the point that they became craze. That craze became insanity. And they did the unthinkable with the permission of these words: “We will not take it any more,” said Trump. “ You’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong…I know everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building. To peacefully, patriotically make your voices heard.” Now when have we ever known the words peaceful and patriotic to be associated with anything that Trump and his supporters have done? Following the instructions of their leader, the crowd marched to the Capitol in hopes to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and all pandemonium broke loose unlike anything Americans have witness in their lifetime. The crown broke through barriers to cover the Capitol grounds. Some were seen scaling walls, breaking windows, and storming through the Capitol carrying Trump signs and wearing Make America Better caps. All of this was happening as legislators were conducting the ceremonial counting of the votes to officially

confirm Joe Biden as the next President of the United States of America. In the middle of all that a call to closed the doors happened as members of Congress heard the commotion followed by gunshots and all began to fear for their lives as they duck down underneath their desks and prayed for the best. Meanwhile Trumpsters wrecked havoc all over the Capitol going inside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office making themselves at home, sitting in her chair, propping their up on her desk, and leaving a warning note, “We won’t back down.”

Two of Texas Congressional leaders, Sheila Jackson Lee and Al Green, gave statements via social media:

“I am currently safe and locked down in an undisclosed location as the Capitol has faced internal threat due to rogue protestors supporting President Trump. While I support peaceful protests, I vehemently oppose the seditious behavior, incited by the President that has occurred today. This is an abhorrently dangerous attempt to violate our democratic values and constitutional process. I encourage us all to stay safe and remain vigilant,” said Congressman Al Green. “I am in the US Capitol. I am safe and will not fear or leave because of this unwarranted and shameless violence. These actions are not serving well at all our precious Democracy, America. We will stay on the floor until every vote

Congress Certifies PresidentElect Biden After Capital Riot Congress Completes Electoral Count, Finalizing Biden’s Win After Violent Delay From Pro-Trump Mob

is counted and President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are again confirmed as President and Vice President of the United States of America. This is my pledge. No one will stop me! The majority of Americans are depending on us!” said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. She previously had been ducking under some chairs with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Beyond the lack of law enforcement that was shocking, was the response of law enforcement. Police could be seen just standing back find of patiently waiting for the crowd to calm down. It seemed that very lightly force was exerted until the terrorists made it inside the Capitol. No tear gas was set. Not a lot of gunfire happened. Not a lot of force at all. Comparing that scene to a far less chaotic Black Lives Matter rally and police could be seen exerting much more force and having far more arrest. Yet, Trump supporters were treated with kid gloves. Let’s say it together, “White privilege has benefits.” You get to live when you act crazy. Four people did lose their lives. One woman, Ashli Babbitt, was fatally shot and killed by the US Capitol Police. The DC Chief of the police Robert Contee also confirmed that three others died as a result of medical emergencies. When things did calm down outside the ‘Capitol Trumpsters’ could be seen smiling from ear-to-ear, clearly pleased at the destruction that they had done. At the end of the day, police

arrested 52 people, 26 on the Capitol grounds. Internationally, the image of America has been destroyed. Many world leaders called the acts disgraceful and shocking.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson

“On the United States and the election, I want to say that all my life America has stood for some very important things — an idea of freedom and an idea of democracy. And ... so far as he encouraged people to storm the Capitol and insofar as the President has consistently cast doubt on the outcome of a free and fair election, I believe that that was completely wrong.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

“What happened in the US shows how fragile Western democracy is,” he said. “Despite all their scientific and industrial achievements, we see a huge influence of populism. When a sick person takes office, we see how he disgraces his country and creates troubles for the world.”

Konstantin Kosachev, Chairman of the Russian Upper House

“The celebration of democracy is over. Alas, this is rock bottom; I say this without a hint of gloating. America no longer defines the course, and therefore has lost all right to set it. And even more so to impose it on others.”

C

ongress has formally affirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s 2020 victory, completing a final step in the electoral process after a mob incited by President Donald Trump breached the US Capitol on Wednesday and forced lawmakers to evacuate both the House and Senate chambers. Vice President Mike Pence, who presided over the count conducted by a joint session of Congress, announced that Biden had won the Electoral College vote early Thursday after the House and Senate easily defeated Republican objections lodged against the votes sent by two states, Arizona and Pennsylvania. Track The Electoral Vote Count In Congress The late-night session was anything but the normal routine for counting Electoral College votes, after the proceedings were halted for more than five hours while lawmakers were forced into lockdown by pro-Trump rioters that overran US Capitol Police. But lawmakers vowed to finish what they had started, and the Senate reconvened just after 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, nearly six hours after it abruptly recessed. “To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today, you did not win,” Pence said as the Senate session resumed following the evacuations of the complex. “As we reconvene in this chamber, the world will again witness the resilience and strength of our democracy, even in the wake of unprecedented violence and vandalism in this Capitol.”

Joint Session In The Shadow Of Georgia’s Runoff Wednesday’s events played out as Democrats swept the Georgia Senate races, taking control of a 5050 Senate after Biden is sworn in and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris becomes the Senate’s tie-breaking vote. The question of how to handle the count had created a major divide inside the Republican Party. The Senate Republican fight spilled into the open last week following Hawley’s announcement, with Trump attacking McConnell and other Republicans who hadn’t joined. In the House, No. 3 Republican Cheney -- daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney -- forcefully pushed back on the objections, while McCarthy quietly backed them. The last time a lawmaker forced votes on the Electoral College results was in 2005, when Sen. Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat, objected to President George W. Bush’s win in Ohio, which she said was never an effort to overturn the election result. In 2017, a group of House Democrats raised several objections to states Trump won, but they were gaveled down because they didn›t have a senator join – by then-vice president Biden. This story has been updated with additional developments. CNN’s Dana Bash, Lauren Fox, Ted Barrett, Ali Zaslav, Daniella Diaz and Evan Perez contributed to this report.

H-E-B Named Grocery Store Of Year 2020 Regional Grocery Takes Top Spot For Its’ COVID-19 Response

W

hen it comes to grocery stores, Texans can agree that H-E-B is the best. Yes, they have a wide variety of food and other things. Yes, they make meal prep easy for cooks and non-cooks with their ready-made meals and cooking demos. But what keeps people coming back time and time again to shop at H-E-B is the way they treat customers and how that care follows to help communities. H-E-B’s motto fits their culture and the way they operate, here everything is better. Out of all the grocers, H-E-B is constantly ranked as the best for their handling of the global pandemic. Now they have received another recognition by Grocery Dive, a leading publication providing content on the news and trends of the grocery store industry, being named Grocer of the Year. If you stay ready, you will never have to get ready is a quote often said by progressive leaders. H-E-B’s emergency preparedness team started watching and planning for the COVID-19 pandemic before it hit the US hard by speaking with those abroad. From that initial prep work, the committee took their findings to store and warehouse employees simulating different scenarios for if the pandemic hit the US and how they would respond. As a result with COVID struck the US hard in March, H-E-B was ready while others were scrambling. While many store shelves were empty of the core supplies most needed

by consumers, H-E-B wasn’t due to their “owning many of its own manufacturing plants and having strategically placed warehouses throughout the Lone Star State,” according to GroceryDive. com. Beyond their preparation, H-E-B got creative by thinking out of the traditional box. They were the first to do social distancing and traffic metering before other stores. It tapped

distributors who normally delivered certain supplies that were not needed as much in a pandemic to distributed supplies that were needed. An example is how they had their beer distributor to deliver ship eggs. H-E-B kept its customers and their health in mind by establishing a special delivery service for customers 60 and older, who were in a higher risk group of getting COVID.

www.StyleMagazine.com

Employees were also the recipients of H-E-B’s generosity. In the midst of the pandemic, other companies were lowering the hours and wages of employees and laying them off. H-E-B increased employee wages and gave them a bonus. Furthermore, H-E-B rolled out new concepts to better reach consumer needs. Residents in Austin saw the opening of Main Streat, the first in-store food hall featuring local restaurants. It sought new markets like Lubbock to open a new store. They also build up the density in their stores in San Antonio and Austin. H-E-B reached out to restaurants to revamp their Meal Simple collection to sever special meals that consumers could easily heat and go. Thereby keeping a lot of local restaurants from closing their doors. Students were consider as H-E-B continue to have a sale on school supplies added in tools for virtual learning, hand sanitizer, and masks when this wasn’t even a focus for others. By listening and comprehending what shoppers, business leaders, community leaders say H-E-B really is a store for the entire community by meeting the needs of the people in more ways than one. H-E-B truly has a heart for all Texans. Houston Style Magazine proudly salutes H-E-B on being named Grocer of the Year 2020. www.HEB.com

Start Of A New Era: Texans Hired Nick Caserio As Their New G.M. By Brian Barefield – Sports Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com

Houston Texans

T

he Houston Texans have started the full transition from the Bill O’ Brien era. Houston hired former New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio as their new general manager. He will join his former coworker of six years with the Patriots, Jack Easterby, who currently serves as executive vice president of football operations. Caserio, 45, has been with New England since 2001 and was one of the main candidates for the Texans general manager position after Brian Gaine was abruptly fired in 2019. Once word got back to the Patriots that Houston was interested in Caserio, an intricate part of three Super Bowl winning seasons, things got interesting. New England filed tampering charges on the Texans which they later withdrew after

New General Manager NAME: Nicholas “Nick“ Caserio PREVIOUS TEAM: New England Patriots DATE OF BIRTH: December 27, 1975 (45 years old) EDUCATION: John Carol University HOMETOWN: Lyndhurst, OH Texans CEO Cal McNair removed Caserio’s name from a list of potential candidates. The aforementioned O’Brien was promoted to general manager before the beginning of the 2019 season. He made his impact felt immediately by trading DE/LB Jadeveon Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks and also acquiring wide receiver Kenny Stills and left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Miami Dolphins. Miami received two-first round and one second round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After trading away All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for running back David Johnson in the 2020 offseason, O’Brien was relieved of his duties in October after Houston began the season with an 0-4 record. Associate head

www.StyleMagazine.com

coach Romeo Crennel took over interim coaching duties for the remainder of the season and had the Texans competitive for the remainder of the season losing a combined nine games by seven points or less. Caserio will take over a Texans team that will have no draft picks in the first two rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft and has very limited cap space going into next season. Houston is coming off of its worst season since 2017 when superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson went down with a lower leg injury in the middle of the season. After winning back-to back AFC South titles, the Texans finished the 2020 NFL season with a 4-12 record. The only thing left on the checklist for Houston is to hire a head coach. A task that is easier said than done with so many good candidates out there including Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, just to name a few. Whoever the Texans hire will have to make sure a couple of things are correct before taking over the locker room. “Whoever it is (new head coach), like I’ve said before, has got to come in with a great structure and plan and discipline and making sure that everyone around us is on the same page and we’re accountable for every action that we’re making,” said Deshaun Watson. “We’re all striving to go for one goal and that’s raising that trophy. It’s got to start from the bottom and we’ve got to build up.”
