Scientific Community Must Reach Out To Ensure African-Americans Gain Confidence To Get Vaccinated
O
By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer
n Friday, I received my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. I was honored to be accompanied by Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, the brilliant African-American viral immunologist who is a rock star in the field of immunology science. From her post at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, she led the team that performed the scientific miracle of developing and testing the Moderna vaccine in record time. Now she is working to overcome the widespread hesitancy in the black community about vaccination. Vaccination is imperative to save lives, particularly for African Americans, disproportionately the greatest victims of the virus, COVID-19 cases and deaths -- now numbering over a staggering 375,000 in the U.S. alone -- continue to shatter records on a daily basis. The rampaging pandemic has exposed once more the extreme disparities in our nation. The black community has suffered a hospitalization rate 3.7 times greater and a death rate 2.8 times greater than the white community. This reflects the harsh reality of inadequate health care in African-American communities. Many impoverished urban communities are health care deserts with hospitals and clinics unavailable. African Americans disproportionately work for employers that do not provide health care. Those who make too much for Medicaid eligibility are particularly at risk. African Americans are also disproportionately essential workers -- the nurses, bus drivers, transit workers, grocery store clerks and others -- who must go to
4
work and are at far greater risk. The mass incarceration of African Americans, which continues to this day, also creates far greater risk, since prisoners -- like those in nursing homes -- are at far greater risk. Now the vaccines offer the potential of staunching the march of the pandemic and saving millions of lives. For understandable reasons -- remember the infamous Tuskegee experiments? -- African Americans harbor suspicions about scientists and vaccines. A survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that nearly one-half (48 percent) of Blacks and over one-third (38 percent) of Latinos were not confident that their needs had been taken into account in the development of the vaccines. “We know our history, and we understand from where this hesitancy comes,” Dr. Corbett told the Chicago Sun-Times. “On the one hand, we are the communities most plagued by the pandemic. On the other hand, we are communities least likely to get vaccinated.” Corbett’s role in leading the development of the Moderna vaccine in itself should calm some of the fears. Both of the vaccines currently approved for emergency use -- the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines -- have proven to be greater than 94 percent effective at preventing COVID-19 and even more effective at preventing severe cases. The clinical trials involved tens of thousands of participants, including people of diverse backgrounds, races, ages, gender and those with other ailments like diabetes. One in 10 of those tested were Black, numbering in the thousands. That

reality enables scientists like Corbett to have confidence in treating African Americans with the vaccine. Racial violence plagues this country to this day. For the country to reach herd immunity, over three in four persons must be vaccinated. If African Americans or Latinos decline to be vaccinated, all will remain at risk. The past cannot be erased. But the present offers hope with Dr. Corbett’s leadership providing reassurance. To help provide education on the need for vaccination, Rainbow Push has partnered with the National Medical Association, led by its president Leon McDougle. NAM is the largest national organization representing African-American physicians and their patients. What’s clear is that the scientific community and community leaders must reach out and work hard to ensure that African Americans gain the confidence to get vaccinated. This won’t be easy. But with the leadership of Dr. Corbett and others, and with a new administration getting serious

about providing the resources for mass vaccination and for outreach into the communities most impacted, lives can be saved. I was honored to receive my first dose, and I strongly urge others to join me.

US Economy Lost 140,000 In December – All Of Them Were Held By Women By Annalyn Kurtz, CNN Business / www.StyleMagazine.com
A
year ago, a rare thing happened to American women. For three months, they held more jobs than men in the US economy — something that had only occurred one other time in history, during a short period in 2009 and early 2010. Sure, there were still many other gender gaps: women were more likely than men to work part-time, for example, because of caregiving responsibilities at home, and even among full-time workers, they earned on average only 81 cents for every dollar of their male peers. Nevertheless, women were making gradual gains. The pandemic quickly changed that story. And now, it just got worse. According to new data released Friday, employers cut 140,000 jobs in December, signaling that the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic is backtracking. Digging deeper into the data also reveals a shocking gender gap: Women accounted for all the job losses, losing 156,000 jobs, while men gained 16,000. Meanwhile, a separate survey of households, which includes self-employed workers, showed an even wider gender disparity. It also highlighted another painful reality: Blacks and
6
Latinas lost jobs in December, while White women made significant gains. These are net numbers, which can mask some of the underlying churn in the labor market. Of course many men lost their jobs in December, too — but when taken together as a group, they came out ahead, whereas women fell behind. Economists often warn against reading too much into a single month, but December’s job losses capped off an already awful year for working women — particularly women of color. Black and Latina women disproportionately work in some of the hardest-hit sectors in the pandemic, often in roles that lack paid sick leave and the ability to work from home. As schools and day cares closed, many were forced to make hard tradeoffs between work and parenting. “Those sectors are less likely to have flexibility, so when employers are inflexible or women can’t come to work because of caregiving responsibilities — they have to exit the workforce,” said C. Nicole Mason, president and CEO of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. Overall, women are still down 5.4 million jobs from February, before the pandemic began, as compared to 4.4 million job losses for men. They
January 14 – January 20, 2021
started 2020 on roughly equal footing, with women holding 50.03% of jobs, but ended it holding 860,000 fewer jobs than their male peers. That gap is in large part due to steep job losses in three sectors: education — which remains a female-dominated industry — hospitality and retail, particularly clothing and accessories stores. All of these industries have been hammered by the pandemic. “We don’t have the pandemic under control. Schools and day cares are still closing, and we know that’s what’s impacting women’s ability to reenter the workforce and sustain jobs,” Mason said. In December, restaurants and bars cut the most jobs by far, and parttime workers were hit especially hard. Among women, Latinas currently have the highest unemployment rate at 9.1%, followed by Black women at 8.4%. White women have the lowest unemployment rate at 5.7%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not release seasonally-adjusted unemployment rates for women of other racial or ethnic identities.

The award was given to five individuals who the Hollywood action star’s Institute hailed heroes for exhibiting true leadership, bravery, and a commitment to American democracy in the 2020 general election and standing up to attacks and intimidation while working diligently to ensure the integrity of the election process. Hollins was honored for his efforts as Harris County Clerk in implementing innovative, non-partisan strategies, including drive-thru and 24-hour voting, that enabled voters to safely cast their votes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2020 general election. When sworn in as Harris County Clerk, Hollins pledged his commitment to ensuring that county residents, regardless of party affiliation, could exercise their right to vote. “We are living in a challenging time. This November, our office will administer the most consequential election of our lifetime amid a global health pandemic. The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy, and I will work tirelessly to ensure that Harris County residents can exercise that right safely, conveniently, and with the peace of mind that their vote will be counted,” said Hollins after assuming his post. The Harvard Business School and Yale Law School grad, who is a Houston attorney, faced numerous legal challenges to his efforts, but was undaunted in his quest to ensure every eligible voter’s voice could be heard at the ballot box. “The public servants we are honoring usually don’t spend their time in the spotlight,” said Schwarzenegger during the ceremony. They usually don’t make headlines. And they usually don’t get much credit. But they are the backbone of our democracy. They work to make sure that all of us, regardless of our party or who we vote for, have the ability to vote and trust our elections. I want to thank every elections

The Houston attorney called the award an honor and commended his staff and volunteers for joining forces to ensure a safe and fair voting process for the voters of Harris County. “Here in Harris County, as was the case for so many election administrators across the country, this was not a political job, the purpose of our work was to ensure that everyone regardless of their political affiliation, regardless of their age, their skin color, what language they spoke, what part of town they live in, were able to exercise the fundamental and constitutional right to vote. During the time of COVID-19 to make sure that folks could do so safely, but also with the peace of mind that their votes were going to be counted and with unprecedented levels of access and convenience,” said Hollins. Additional recipients of the award included, Brad Raffensperger, Secretary of State, Georgia Shauna Dozier, director of elections and registration in Clayton County, Ga., Nancy Boren, director of elections and registration in Muscogee County, Ga., and Christopher C. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor during the civil rights movement, is now the first Black Democrat to be elected to the U.S. Senate in the Deep South in the modern political era. Warnock is the first African American to win a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia’s history. The runoff election featured historic turnout. A voter registration strategy implemented by former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, along with a push by grassroots groups like Black Votes Matter, led by LaTosha Brown, was a deciding factor in Warnock’s decisive win. Black voters in Georgia over-performed in the early vote and on Election Day. the GOP under Donald Trump. Rev. Warnock won his heavily contested U.S. Senate race over billionaire Kelly Loeffler who was appointed to the Senate by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in December 2019. The U.S. Senate race cost over $200 million with soon-to-be Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell donating over $60 million from his PAC. By late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning after Election Day in Georgia, Warnock had 2,227,296 votes to Loeffler’s 2,173,866. On top of Warnock’s historic win, another Democrat, Jon Ossoff has won against incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue. As election results continued to come in showing how close the Warnock/Loeffler race would be, some Republicans began assigning blame for the coming loss to President Trump. The stunning double victory on a single night for Democrats will change the trajectory of the presidency of Joseph Biden, which begins on January 20. The U.S. Senate will be tied 50-50 and Vice President-elect Kamara Harris will now become a pivotal figure required to often preside over the U.S. Senate from the presiding officers Chair and break ties on key policy and nominees. Trump had earlier called into question the validity of the voting process in Georgia. The President also pressured Georgia officials to flip the state in his favor as Congress is set to officially certify the presidential election. Trump’s words signaled an internal war in the Republican Party as the out-going President caused problems within the GOP. Trump attacked Republican Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and the Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger. That, along with out-going U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell single handedly blocked $2,000 checks to assist Americans in a pandemic that has killed over 350,000 people, likely impacting the results in Georgia.

Joe Biden’s Inaugural Festivities To Feature National Day Of Service On Martin Luther King Holiday
P
By www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
resident-elect Joe Biden’s inaugural committee will promote the national day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day as part of festivities ahead of the inauguration on January 20. The President-elect, his wife Jill Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff are expected to participate in the day of service on January 18, a committee official said, though the details for their events were not immediately available. The committee plans to work with organizations on the state, local and national level as well as service leaders and members of various communities to organize events. Organizers said the events will focus on providing Covid-19 relief and addressing issues highlighted by the pandemic, including “poverty, hunger, racial injustice, homelessness, mental health and educational disparities.” “President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris are empathetic leaders who know the crisis millions of American families are facing,” Tony Allen, CEO of the inaugural committee, said. “And like Dr. King, they know that we must have a shared commitment — in word and in deed — to bring the nation together in service to others.” The inaugural committee will encourage the majority of events be held in a virtual format, but
there may be some limited in-person events, which would follow health and safety protocols because of the pandemic, organizers said. The committee plans to post service events and urge Americans to sign up for volunteer opportunities through its inaugural website. Biden’s inaugural committee’s call to service follows in the footsteps of President Barack Obama’s own inaugural committees, which asked Americans to participate in the day of service as part of festivities in 2009 and 2013. President Bill Clinton signed the King Holiday and Service Act in 1994, establishing MLK Day as a national day of service. President George W. Bush and Obama often participated in service projects on the holiday in the years that followed. The national day of service is one of several events the committee is planning in the lead up to Inauguration Day. Last week, the committee announced it would host a national memorial to remember and honor lives lost to Covid-19 on January 19. It is encouraging cities and towns across the country to participate, and the event will include a lighting ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC. Many of this year’s traditional inaugural festivities will be scaled back due to the coronavirus
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris pandemic. The President-elect and vice president-elect will take their oaths of office at the US Capitol, but the ceremony’s footprint will be “extremely limited.” The inaugural committee has encouraged the public not to travel to Washington, DC, and instead to participate in the inaugural festivities from their home bases. The committee announced Sunday that it is forgoing a traditional in-person inaugural parade, opting instead for a “virtual parade across America.” The President-elect will receive a presidential escort from 15th Street to the White House, which will feature every branch of the military.

Capitol Rioters Shouted “This Is Our House.” But, The Capitol Building Was Built By Enslaved Black Americans By Leah Asmelash, www.CNN.com / www.StyleMagazine.com – Newswire
“
This is our country; this is our house,” one rioter told a reporter while storming the US Capitol last week in support of President Donald Trump. And that rioter wasn’t alone. The sentiment of the Capitol being “our house,” according to those who invaded the building, was heard multiple times throughout Wednesday’s event. But the US Capitol building was actually built mostly by enslaved African Americans, according to the Architect of the Capitol, the steward of landmark buildings in Washington, DC, including the US Capitol. When Congress moved from Philadelphia to Washington in 1800, there were only a few carpenters, bricklayers and stone cutters already in the area, the Architect of the Capitol says. As a result, most of the building work fell on local laborers, mostly enslaved Black Americans. “These slaves, as well as other the laborers, quarried the stone used for the floors, walls and columns of the Capitol, sawed both wood and stone, and became skilled in brick making and laying,” the Architect says. “Carpentry was also one of the more significant contributions slaves made to the construction of the Capitol as they framed the roof and installed

its shingle covering.” In fact, it was an enslaved laborer named Philip Reid who played a key part in the creation of the Statue of Freedom, which sits on top of the Capitol. When it was time to move the plaster model to the foundry, the Italian sculptor hired to disassemble it refused, barring a pay raise. Reid, an enslaved laborer at the foundry, found a way to separate the five sections of the model so it could be transported. In 2012, Congress placed a marker in the Capitol Visitor Center commemorating the role of laborers and enslaved African Americans in building the Capitol. And the Capitol isn’t the only significant building in Washington built by enslaved African Americans. The White House, too, used slave labor in its construction.

“
What Would ‘King’ Do In A Global COVID-19 Pandemic?
The time is always right to do what is right,” said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Throughout his life, King constantly sought out the wrong of injustice treatment of black and brown skin Americans to make it right with all of them being seen as equals under the law. In 1966, King grew greatly concerned about the use of federal funds to support the discrimination of African American doctors and patients at Chicago hospitals. African Americans were receiving sub par treatment and doctors were being banned from being admitted to hospitals. King with the help of the Medical Committee for Human Rights blamed the American Medical Association of “conspiracy of inaction” in civil rights. He wanted to “raise the conscience of the nation.” “We are concerned about the constant use of federal funds to support this most notorious expression of segregation. Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhuman because it often results in physical death,” said King at the 2nd annual Convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights in March of 1966 in Chicago, IL. Fifty-five years later we are still debating this same subject. An injustice in health with the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to physical death of millions. Institutional racism still exists. The low-income and disenfranchised have always had a hard time to survive day-in and dayout. COVID-19 made their lives even harder. Topping their mountain of bills for rent/mortgage, utilities, food, medicine, and other things, Families had to figure out how to home school with no computers and/or internet access, pay for PPEs, and remain healthy, sometimes with

under the law. It’s only fair, right? Right, it is.
HOLIDAY IS MONDAY, JANUARY 18, 2021 little to no income. Many had reduced hours at work or lost their job completely. Then there are the questions. “Do I pay the water bill or the gas? Do I buy food and not prescriptions? Where will the money come from to keep up rent/mortgage payments? A lot of questions with no answers can stress anyone to their limit. One of the biggest and most pressing issues for families is adequate healthcare. Underserved people usually lack proper healthcare due to many factors. Some include not being able to afford the insurance, not having a primary doctor, not having access to quality doctors, and so
on. Lack of proper healthcare makes this segment of the community even more susceptible to illnesses and diseases like the coronavirus. When families do decide to get medical attention, most head to the hospital ER instead of a doctor’s office and sometimes they wait to long to get help. Something must be done to allow this community to have adequate healthcare. This kind of fight is what King lived to do. He had a passion for elevating the quality of life for Black Americans to be treat like American citizens just like their white counterparts. In his eyes, everyone should be treated equally

If King Were Alive Today How Would He Handle The Global Pandemic?
From his past work, we all know that King preached nonviolence. Before he took any action King would get a clear understanding of the problem to better develop his plan. He was known for taking a large problem and breaking it down into smaller objectives to do local grassroots campaigns. The next step was to find a suitable face for the campaign. For instance, when King was over the Montgomery Bus Boycotts the face of the movement was Rosa Parks. Although Parks was not the first person to not give up her seat to a white person but, she was thought to be a better fit for the campaign versus Claudette Colvin, who was the first to do so. With all those moving pieces in motion, King could start to mold his effective response to the wrongdoing. A greater impact would be felt with the more people involved. This is why King often partnered with organizations with the same thrust as he. In the mist of the campaign, King would check off goals accomplished. Any grievances he had he made them known all the way up to the nation’s capitol. The last step with any plan is to evaluate your goals achieved, lessons learned, and future objectives. Here is my big disclaimer: The writer wrote how she believes King would act in a global pandemic where equal treatment was not given to all. By no means is any of this factual – this is just the writer’s belief based off previous actions by King in the fight for civil rights.

Former Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell Sentenced To Six Years In Federal Prison For Wire Fraud
C
By Jo-Carolyn Goode, Managing Editor – www.StyleMagazine.com
hurch people trust their faith and they trust their faith leader. A Houston area pastor, Kirbyjon Caldwell, has abused that trust and now it has landed him behind bars. United States District Judge S. Maurice Hicks, Jr. sentenced Caldwell to serve 72 months and 1 year of supervised release. In addition, Caldwell had to pay restitution to the tune of $3,588,500 and a fine of $125,000. “The defendants in this case abused the trust that the victims had placed in them,” stated Acting United States Attorney Van Hook to KADN. “This defendant used his status as the pastor of a mega-church to help convince the many victim investors that they were making a legitimate investment but instead he took their hard-earned money from them and used it for his own personal gain. This office will continue to investigate and prosecute those who scheme and prey upon the elderly and others.” This sentence of the, once spiritual advisor to Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, comes as a result of his involvement in multimillion dollar investment scheme. Officially, he was found guilty of wire fraud two years ago. Caldwell and Gregory Alan Smith approach their clients with an opportunity to invest opportunity historical Chinese bonds from the former Republic of China in 1949. The money collected would go into accounts owned by Caldwell. He is said to have sold over $3 million bonds to unsuspecting

he has already begun paying restitution a lot of victims have been paid. Windsor Village Church, where Caldwell was once the senior pastor, have already accepted him apology. Floyd LeBlanc, Chairman of The Windsor Village Church Family Personnel Committee, said in a prepared statement, “We look forward to more lives being changed and more destinies being shaped as The Windsor Village Church Family continues to fulfill its God-given mission, in Jesus’s Name, said LeBlanc. The Kingdom Building continues!” In the official release from the Windsor Village, the church decided to focus on the positive. “Lay Preacher Caldwell, who is no longer an ordained elder in the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, never stopped serving the community. As a direct result of this servant leadership, 980 part-time and full-time jobs were created; 258 acres of land have been developed and more than $168 million in economic value has been added to our community, a historically underserved community. These contributions include 462 homes, a YMCA, nationally known franchise restaurants, health care providers, an independent senior living facility and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, to name a few.”
