COMMENTARY

A GLIMPSE AT THE NEW AMERICAN ECONOMY... IF WE CAN SEIZE THE MOMENT W

By Ben Jealous, National Political Commentator

hat if the answer to undoing the harm wrought by the demise of America’s manufacturing sector was right in front of us? An economic boom waiting to happen, to rebuild communities and revitalize our beaten-down working class… And, this time, without the rampant industrial pollution that fuels climate change and sickens our people… It is not too good to be true. But we must seize the moment if we do not want it to pass us by. Last week, I visited the Qcells solar panel plant in Georgia. It is the largest facility of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. And as the world transitions away from fossil fuels and to renewable energy sources, it represents the opportunity we have in front of us. Solar manufacturing jobs in the US are already on pace to more than triple from about 35,000 in 2023 to 120,000 by 2033. We can do even better – by expanding the energy market and domesticating the solar supply chain. The new green economy should mean an American century that rivals or even surpasses America’s global success in the 20th century. The Biden-Harris administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) gives us the tools to turn this dream into reality. But the private sector needs to do its part, with investments that are both patriotic and profitable – not to mention planet-saving. My visit came one day after Qcells announced a massive deal to supply Microsoft with 12 gigawatts of solar modules and Engineering, Procurement and Construction services over eight years. That’s enough energy to power more than 1.8 million homes annually. And it will help Microsoft meet its goal of being carbon negative, water positive and zero waste by 2030.

4

More than that, it’s an investment in America. According to the energy research firm Wood Mackenzie, China will control more than 80 percent of the world's solar manufacturing capacity through 2026. This is the future of energy. And the United States needs to catch up. The goal should be to scale up investments like Microsoft’s as rapidly as possible, and bring the entire manufacturing lifecycle for solar technology to the US. And to do it in a way that pushes the energy utilities that power the factories towards clean fuel sources. How we power the supply chain is as important as where it lives. Manu-

facturing clean energy tech domestically can create a virtuous cycle in which grids are increasingly powered by clean sources. That means lower energy bills and cleaner air to breathe. The IRA ensures it is not just corporations and utilities that are in the game. Billions of dollars are available for local community organizations, cities, schools, and homeowners to spur growth in our domestic clean energy industry. Despite the “drill, baby, drill” political rhetoric from the oil and gas industry and the politicians in its pockets, elected representatives of both parties understand damn well what these jobs mean for their states and districts. Trust

www.StyleMagazine.com

that most lawmakers from Georgia and the other states now being referred to as the “Battery Belt” are eager to reap the IRA’s economic benefits when it comes to clean energy manufacturing. New Years Day marked the 30th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which contributed to the obliteration of America’s manufacturing sector throughout the ‘90s and early 2000s. What ensued in the wake of those lost jobs, and the devastation of the communities that relied on them, was much of the social, economic, and political strife plaguing our country today. In this post-NAFTA moment, America can reassert its global leadership in manufacturing the technologies on which the world runs. It will mean an explosion of new American jobs and a windfall for American consumers – who will save money and get other benefits from domesticating supply chains. It will also accelerate the end of fossil fuels. And the protections and incentives in the IRA that focus on equity will help ensure this new energy economy reflects our values, and that marginalized communities do not get left behind. Another industry that uniquely helped establish America’s pride, identity, and economic might in the last century – the automobile industry – should also be paying attention. Because they have some catching up to do as well. But that is a topic for another column. Watch this space. UNITY IN FAITH: HOUSTON CLERGY EMBODIES DR. KING’S VISION WITH INTERFAITH CALL TO ACTION By Burt Levine, Political Editor For www.StyleMagazine.com

I

n a poignant tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s enduring legacy, Senior Rabbi David Lyon of Houston's historic Congregation Beth Israel joined forces with Reverend Marcus Cosby, esteemed leader of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, in a ceremonial remembrance this Monday. Their union symbolizes a bridge across faiths, reaffirming Dr. King's vision in the very city where he once imparted his transformative message during the civil rights movement. Rabbi Lyon, a venerated figure who has steered Beth Israel since 1990, eloquently expanded on Dr. King's philosophy: "Dr. King left us more than memories; he left us a nation profoundly changed for the better by his life's unwavering commitment." Beth Israel, the oldest Jewish congregation in Texas, has been a bastion of civil rights advocacy since its inception in 1854, and under Rabbi Lyon's guidance, continues to inspire over 3,600 families in their Jewish faith and communal activism. Echoing Dr. King's teachings, Rabbi Lyon urged, "Through every prayer and every act of kindness, we honor the Almighty who inspired Dr. King. Let our deeds reflect his dream, striving to be a blessing to life itself." A respected voice in Houston's

"We embrace the stranger, nurture the hungry, clothe the bare, and uplift the vulnerable among us, for in these actions, our faith finds its truest expression." Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, an anchor of faith near Texas Southern University since 1962, has flourished under Dr. Cosby's leadership, expanding from 2,500 to 15,000 members. Dr. Cosby, carrying the torch from Rev. Lawson, Houston's revered Pastor, remarked, "Our ministry's heart beats for this community, and it is by divine design that we continue our mission here." As Houston Style Magazine readers reflect on Dr. King's legacy, we find its echoes in leaders like Rabbi Lyon and Dr. Cosby, who exhort us to live out those immortal ideals. Their collective message on MLK Day remains a clarion call for justice, equality, and unity.

Rabbi David Lyon & Rev. Marcus Cosby spiritual and civic realms, Rabbi Lyon also contributes his expertise to the United Way of Houston's Board. The ceremony, steeped in shared prayers, music, and empowering messages,

drew a remarkably diverse crowd, united despite the inclement weather, to stand against bigotry, racism, and antisemitism—ills that cloud the path God intends for humanity. Rabbi Lyon's message resonated deeply,

Record and Advocates for Prison Reform By Ben Morse, CNN/StyleMagazine.com Newswire

J Stroud’s voice cracks. He’s just acknowledged his faith in reference to the road he’s been on. “It’s taken a lot of hard work,” says Stroud as he fights back tears. Stroud is speaking on stage at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, in front of thousands of people in attendance and many more watching on TV. He has just been selected by the Houston Texans with the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. It is the culmination of a journey that has led him from familial struggles to a starting quarterback job in the NFL. It’s a journey in which he has dealt with his father being sent to prison, living squeezed into a small apartment above a storage unit raised by a single mother and the countless setbacks a prospective football career brings. It’s no wonder he is emotional. “I don’t have to be anything or be anybody else. I have to just be myself and be comfortable in my own shoes, comfortable in my own skin,” Stroud said at the time. ‘I really don’t think I’ve even touched my potential yet’ It’s Week 13 in the NFL and Stroud strides off the field at NRG Stadium in Houston to the adulation of the thousands who have stayed behind to serenade

him.

The 22-year-old rookie has just completed 16 of his 27 passes for 274 yards, throwing for a touchdown, no interceptions and a 106.1 passer rating as his Texans narrowly beat the Denver Broncos. One might understand if Stroud was feeling overconfident or wanted to sing his

own praises. And that would be well within his rights; he’s spearheading the unheralded Texans to the brink of a playoff spot on the back of his own historic performances. But he’s not. He says his parents, in particular his mother, are a key reason for keeping him grounded. In fact, Stroud can single

out a specific moment which he says was “pivotal” in his sporting career, playing in a youth basketball championship game at the age of 12. As the game goes to overtime, Stroud remembers his team and the fans shouting in excitement at the close of the game about his standout performance; everyone, that is, except his mom, Kimberly. “She came over to the bench – and this is during a timeout in overtime – and she grabbed my jersey and was like, ‘Boy, you stay humble no matter what. You do that again, I’m going to take you to the bathroom,’” Stroud recalls. “I’m a grown adult now, I know to be humble. Even then, I’ll be thinking, ‘Ah, let me stop. My mama get on me.’ My parents did a great job raising me as such to be a humble young man, to understand how quick you get it is how quick it can be taken away.” That attitude has served Stroud well throughout his life and football career. From being a five-star prospect out of high school to a two-time Heisman trophy finalist at Ohio State, Stroud has never let the stage overawe him.

POLITICS: Harris County Pioneers Joint Primary Election,

Uniting Republican and Democratic Voters By Francis Page, Jr. for www.StyleMagazine.com - Newswire

Cindy Siegel

Mike Doyle

n a groundbreaking move that speaks volumes about the power of unity, Harris County has announced a joint primary election, slated for March 5, 2024. This collaboration between the Republican and Democratic parties is not just a first for Texas' largest county, but a beacon of bipartisan cooperation. Harris County Clerk Teneshia

Hudspeth heralded the joint effort: “Conducting a Joint Primary will be a first in the history of Harris County. I commend the Chairs of each party and their executive committees for their due diligence in arriving at an accord that addresses the challenges presented by new legislation and best serves Republican and Democratic Primary voters.”

I

THE

The move comes in response to Senate Bill 924, which restricts the combination of voting precincts in primaries, necessitating a larger number of polling locations. This joint primary streamlines the process, making voting more accessible while conserving resources. Echoing the sentiments of innovation and unity, the Republican Party Chair – Cindy Siegal stated, "This joint effort is a significant step towards ensuring that all voters in Harris County have a seamless experience at the polls. Our dedication to democracy transcends party lines, and we believe this will encourage greater voter participation." The Democratic Party Chair – Mike Doyle also shared their perspective, "The collaboration for a joint primary is a victory for every voter in Harris County. It exemplifies our commitment to making sure that every voice is heard, and every vote is counted efficiently. We're proud to be part of this historic moment." In Texas, primary elections are the critical first act in the democratic process, deciding party nominees for the November general election. This year, however, voters from both parties will experience the ease of casting their ballots using the same voting equipment, a process that mirrors the convenience of early voting and general elections

in November. This joint primary not only fosters a spirit of cooperation but also emphasizes Houston’s commitment to an inclusive voting process. The agreement is contingent on the approval of the county chairs of both parties, the county elections officer, and the governing authority of the County via resolution. For more detailed information on the parties' positions and further resources, visit the official websites for the Harris County Democratic Party and the Harris County Republican Party. Stay informed with the latest election news by visiting www.HarrisVotes.com or calling 713-7556965, and by following @HarrisVotes and @HarrisCoTxClerk on social media. As Harris County looks forward to this innovative approach to primary elections, it's a poignant reminder that collaboration can lead to greater efficiencies and strengthen the fabric of our democracy. This historical convergence in the electoral process is a testament to Houston's dynamic leadership and the shared goal of ensuring that every vote is an opportunity to shape our future.

HEALTH: LIFE-CHANGING HABITS THAT WILL MELT YOUR STRESS AWAY By www.BlackDoctors.org

n the hustle and bustle of modern life, stress has become an unwelcome companion for many. The demands of work, family, and daily responsibilities can leave us feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. However, there are life-changing habits that can melt away stress and bring a sense of calm and balance into our lives. Let’s explore five transformative habits, including the power of sound therapy, that can make a significant impact on your well-being. Statistics tell a sobering tale – while Caucasians are projected to live an average of 76 years, African Americans face a shorter life expectancy, with an average of 70 years. These six years may seem like a mere statistical variance, but they represent a significant gap in quality of life, access to healthcare, and overall well-being. MINDFUL MEDITATION One of the most powerful habits you can cultivate to reduce stress is mindful meditation. This ancient practice has stood the test of time for a reason—it works. Take a few moments each day to sit quietly, focus on your breath, and bring your attention to the present moment. Mindful meditation has been scientifically proven to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety, and improve overall mental well-being. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced meditator, dedicating even just 10 minutes a day to this practice

can make a profound difference. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, stress has become an unwelcome companion for many. SOUND THERAPY Sound therapy, or sound healing, is an ancient practice that is gaining recognition in the modern world for its stress-relieving benefits. This holistic approach uses sound vibrations to bring about a sense of harmony and balance in the body and mind. Various techniques, such as listening to calming music, Tibetan singing bowl meditation, or guided sound journeys, can

be incorporated into your routine. Sound therapy works by entraining the brain to move into deeper states of relaxation. The soothing sounds can reduce stress hormones, slow down the heart rate, and promote a meditative state. Incorporating sound therapy into your daily life, whether through a dedicated session or simply playing calming music during your daily activities, can be a game-changer in your stress management journey. GRATITUDE JOURNALING In the midst of stress, it’s easy to lose sight of the positive aspects of life. Cultivating a habit of gratitude journaling can shift your focus from stressors to moments of joy and appreciation. Each day, take a few minutes to write down three things you are grateful for. This simple practice can create a positive mindset, fostering resilience in the face of challenges. Over time, you’ll find that acknowledging the good in your life becomes a natural and uplifting habit. REGULAR EXERCISE

Exercise is not just beneficial for your physical health; it’s a powerful tool for stress reduction.
