COMMENTARY PROJECT 2025: A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA

Project 2025, unveiled by conservative think tanks, is being hailed by its proponents as a roadmap to restore America's greatness. However, beneath its veneer of patriotic rhetoric lies a stark reality: a blueprint that could undermine democracy, erode social justice, and deepen socio-economic divides. As we delve into the specifics, it becomes clear that Project 2025 poses significant threats to the principles of equality and fairness that underpin American society.

An Agenda of Regression

At its core, Project 2025 seeks to implement sweeping changes that roll back decades of progress in civil rights, environmental protection, and social welfare. The initiative, championed by the Heritage Foundation, promotes policies that disproportionately benefit the wealthy and powerful, while marginalizing minorities, the poor, and the working class.

Economic Policies: Favoring the Few

One of the cornerstones promises of Project 2025 is economic growth through deregulation and tax cuts. However, a closer examination reveals that these benefits are heavily skewed towards the top 1%. The proposed tax reforms would significantly reduce the tax burden on the rich, while offering minimal relief to middle and lower-income families. Furthermore, the cuts to social programs threaten to increase poverty and widen the gap between the rich and the poor. The economic policies of Project 2025 are a clear attempt to entrench economic disparities and consolidate wealth among a privileged few.

Environmental Rollbacks: Ignoring the Climate Crisis

Project 2025's environmental agenda is nothing short of alarming. By aiming to dismantle critical protections under the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act, the initiative shows a blatant disregard for the climate crisis and public health. These rollbacks

are poised to exacerbate pollution, endanger wildlife, and contribute to the ongoing environmental degradation. For a city like Houston, which is already battling severe air quality issues and the impacts of climate change, such policies are a recipe for disaster.

Social Programs: Attacking the Vulnerable

The proposed cuts to social programs under Project 2025 are a direct attack on the nation's most vulnerable populations. Reducing funding for Medicaid, food assistance, and affordable housing would leave mil-

lions without essential support, leading to increased homelessness, hunger, and untreated medical conditions. This approach is not only inhumane but also economically short-sighted, as it undermines the health and productivity of the workforce.

Judicial Appointments: Undermining Democracy

A critical yet less publicized aspect of Project 2025 is its plan to reshape the judiciary. By appointing judges with extreme conservative views, the project aims to roll back civil rights, voting rights, and reproductive freedoms.

This strategy threatens to undermine the judiciary's role as a check on executive and legislative power, eroding the very foundations of American democracy. The long-term implications of such a judicial shift could be devastating, reversing hard-won gains in equality and justice.

Houston's Unique Stake

For Houston, a city known for its diversity and economic vitality, the stakes are particularly high. The environmental rollbacks proposed by Project 2025 could worsen the city's already significant pollution problems, disproportionately affecting low-income and minority communities. Additionally, the cuts to social programs could lead to higher rates of poverty and homelessness, straining local resources and social services.

Conclusion: Defending Democracy and Justice

Project 2025 presents itself as a visionary plan for America's future, but its underlying agenda threatens to erode the democratic values and social justice principles that are the bedrock of American society. As this initiative gains momentum, it is crucial for the citizens of Houston and the nation to critically assess its proposals, understand their far-reaching implications, and mobilize to protect the progress that has been made.

Houston Style Magazine is committed to providing its readers with the information necessary to engage in this crucial debate. The future of our democracy and social justice is at stake, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the vision of America we pass on to future generations is one of equality, fairness, and opportunity for all.

IPOLITICAL: HARRIS COUNTY CAD BOARD MEMBERS DANIELS AND MCCRUTCHEON SWORN-IN AMID INDEPENDENCE DAY SPIRIT

n a historic move aligned with the July 4th Independence Day spirit of "no taxation without representation," Kathy Blueford Daniels and Ericka McCrutcheon were sworn in on Monday morning as the first elected members of the Harris County Central Appraisal District (CAD) Board. This landmark event was marked by the presence of Texas State Senator Paul Bettencourt and State Rep. Alma Allen, who played pivotal roles in the legislation that created these elected positions.

Daniels and McCrutcheon join the board under the leadership of Humble ISD Trustee and Board Chair Martina Lemond Dixon. Their primary responsibility is to ensure fairness in property tax valuations across America's third-largest county, a crucial task that impacts 600 taxing entities, including the county itself, 34 cities, 25 school districts, and numerous municipal utility districts.

Kathy Blueford Daniels: Champion for Fairness

Kathy Blueford Daniels, a former elected Houston ISD Trustee, won her seat with a remarkable 50.35% of the vote, triumphing over three opponents, including prominent figures like Ramey Isa Ankar, Era N. Ford, and Bill Frasier. Daniels, a northside Houston native, retired postal worker, and professional Realtor,

emphasized the significance of her role in reflecting the diverse demographics and property values of Harris County's 4.7 million residents.

"Serving as the first elected representatives on this board alongside appointed members is a responsibility to fight for fairness for the taxpayers, families, and businesses throughout our county," Daniels stated, with her husband Joe by her side. She highlighted her unique perspective and extensive experience, which she believes will greatly benefit the board's mission.

Ericka McCrutcheon: Advocate for the People

Ericka McCrutcheon secured her position with an impressive 65% of the vote in a runoff election against Pelumi Adeleke. With deep roots in Harris County, McCrutcheon, who has previously run for Houston City Council, brings a wealth of experience from her church, construction business, and civic work.

"This is important and personal to me," McCrutcheon expressed. "My mission

is ensuring constituents are listened to and property valuations are fair. A republic by the people and for the people is essential for our county to prosper and our country to prevail."

A New Era for Harris County

The newly elected board members will play a crucial role in selecting Appraisal Review Board Members who will hear property tax valuation disputes, ensuring a fair process for all property owners. The presence of Texas State Senator Paul Bettencourt and State Rep. Alma Allen at the swearing-in ceremony underscored the significance of this event. Their support was instrumental in the passage of the bill allowing voters to elect CAD board members for the first time in Harris County's history.

Daniels and McCrutcheon’s inauguration represent a new chapter in the county's governance, one that prioritizes transparency, fairness, and representation for all its residents. Their commitment to their roles promises to bring positive changes to the property tax appraisal process, reflecting the diverse needs and values of Harris County.

Houston Style Magazine readers, this historic swearing-in aligns perfectly with the values celebrated on Independence Day, marking a significant step towards greater representation and fairness in taxa-

EHEALTH: THESE ULTRA-PROCESSED FOODS MAY SHORTEN YOUR LIFE ,

NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE STUDY SAYS

ating higher levels of ultra-processed foods may shorten lifespans by more than 10%, according to a new, unpublished study of over 500,000 people whom researchers followed for nearly three decades. The risk went up to 15% for men and 14% for women once the data was adjusted, said study lead author Erikka Loftfield, an investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.

Asked about their consumption of 124 foods, people in the top 90th percentile of ultra-processed food consumption said overly processed drinks topped their list. “Diet soft drinks were the key contributor to ultra-processed food consumption. The second one was sugary soft drinks,” Loftfield said. “Beverages are a very important component of the diet and contribute significantly to ultra-processed food intake.”

Refined grains such as ultra-processed breads and baked goods ranked next in popularity, the study found. “This is one more large, long-duration cohort study confirming the association between UPF (ultra-processed food) intake and all-cause mortality, particularly from cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes,” said Carlos Monteiro, emeritus professor of nutrition and public health at Brazil’s University of São Paulo, in an email.

Monteiro coined the term ul -

tra-processed food and created the NOVA food classification system, which looks beyond nutrients to how foods are made. Monteiro was not involved in the study, but several members of the NOVA classification system were coauthors.

The NOVA classification system sorts foods from minimally processed— whole foods such as fruits and vegetables— to processed foods such as deli meat and sausage—to ultra-processed.

Ultra-processed foods contain ingredients “never or rarely used in kitchens, or classes of additives whose function is to make the final product palatable or more appealing,” according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations . The list of additives includes preservatives to resist mold and bacteria;

What goes

emulsifiers to keep incompatible ingredients from separating; artificial colorings and dyes; anti-foaming, bulking, bleaching, gelling, and glazing agents; and added or altered sugar, salt, and fats designed to make food appetizing.

Health Risks Linked to Processed Meats and Soft Drinks

The preliminary study, presented Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in Chicago, analyzed dietary data gathered in 1995 from nearly 541,000 Americans ages 50 to 71 who were participating in the US National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study. Researchers linked the dietary data to death rates over the next 20 to 30 years. Compared with those in the bottom 10% of ultra-processed food consumption,

people who ate the most overly processed food were more likely to die from heart disease or diabetes, according to the study. Unlike other studies, however, researchers found no rise in cancer-related deaths.

Some ultra-processed foods carried more risk than others, Loftfield said: “Highly processed meat and soft drinks were a couple of the subgroups of ultra-processed food most strongly associated with mortality risk.” Diet drinks are considered ultra-processed foods because they contain artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and stevia, and additional additives not found in whole foods.

For the readers of Houston Style Magazine, it is crucial to be aware of the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods. Prioritizing minimally processed and whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables, over highly processed items can significantly impact overall health and longevity. As more research continues to confirm the dangers of ultra-processed foods, making informed dietary choices becomes increasingly important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Cerrados los feriados del condado El primero en llegar es el primero en ser atendido
Visítenos de lunes a viernes, del 10 de junio al 9 de agosto de 2024.

The anticipation has culminated in a historic moment. Bronny James, the eldest son of NBA superstar LeBron James, has found his place in the NBA, joining his father on the Los Angeles Lakers.

Bronny James, one of the most closely watched amateur basketball players of the past decade, was selected 55th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Lakers. This significant milestone follows a challenging year filled with speculation and questions about his potential to play professionally after experiencing a cardiac arrest.

“My dream has always been to make a name for myself and, of course, reach the NBA,” Bronny expressed at the NBA Draft Combine in May.

Last season, the Lakers finished with a 47-35 record, exiting in the first round of the playoffs against the Denver Nuggets. LeBron James, in his 21st season, averaged 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.3 assists.

LeBron James is moving toward a new contract with the Los Angeles Lakers He did not exercise his option to accept what would have been a $51.4 million contract for this coming season and is seeking a new deal with the Lakers. The terms of the new deal could be finalized quickly, according

SPORTS: BRONNY JAMES JOINS LAKERS AND DADA HISTORIC NBA MILESTONE FOR THE JAMES FAMILY

to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither James nor the Lakers have revealed the decision publicly.

This decision adds intrigue to the NBA’s free agency period, which officially starts Sunday, with players like Paul George and Klay Thompson potentially on the move to new teams.

Bronny's journey to the NBA included a notable year at the University of Southern California, where he averaged 4.8 points and 19.3 minutes across 25 games. Despite initial struggles with his shooting, Bronny's presence carried the weight of his father’s dream to play alongside him in the NBA.

This dream seemed uncertain when Bronny collapsed during a USC practice last July due to a cardiac arrest caused by a congenital heart defect. His quick recovery and return to the court sparked renewed discussions about his draft prospects. LeBron's public desire to finish his career playing with his son further fueled these conversations.

In February 2022, LeBron declared, “My last year will be played with my son. Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year.”

The Lakers' Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka praised Bronny, stating, “Bronny is first and foremost a person of high character. And secondly, he’s a young man who works incredibly hard. Those are the qualities we look for in drafting players and adding to our developmental core at the Lakers. He had a great draft workout with us where he displayed those qualities.”

Bronny’s resilience and dedication, combined with his improved health, paved the way for his selection by the Lakers. His journey from a promising high school career at Sierra Canyon to overcoming a major health scare at USC demonstrates his tenacity and love for the game.

Now, Bronny James is set to join his father in potentially creating history as the first father-son duo to play together in the NBA. His first appearance in a Lakers uniform is anticipated during the 2024 NBA Summer League from July 12 through July 22.

Bronny worked out only for the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers. His agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, emphasized that Bronny would not consider a two-way contract, a common path for developing players. Confident in his abilities, Bronny believed he would be drafted on his own merits.
