early two-and-a-half years since the coronavirus pandemic began, the most infectious and transmissible variant yet has arrived. Repeated Covid-19 waves have left millions of people dead, with only vaccines helping to blunt the toll. Now the virus is spreading again — evolving, escaping immunity and driving an uptick in cases and hospitalizations. The latest version of its shape-shifting, BA.5, is a clear sign that the pandemic is far from over. The newest offshoot of Omicron, along with a closely related variant, BA.4, are fueling a global surge in cases — 30% over the past fortnight, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In Europe, the Omicron subvariants are powering a spike in cases of about 25%, though Dr. Michael Ryan, the executive director of WHO's Health Emergencies Program, has said that number may actually be higher, given the "almost collapse in testing." BA.5 is on the march in China, ratcheting anxieties that major cities there may soon re-enforce strict lockdown measures that were only recently lifted. And the same variant has become the dominant strain in the United States, where it accounted for 65% of new infections last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "We have been watching this virus evolve rapidly. We've been planning and preparing for this moment.

www.StyleMagazine.com

And the message that I want to get across to the American people is this: BA.5 is something we're closely monitoring, and most importantly, we know how to manage it," said Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House's Covid-19 response coordinator, in a news briefing on Tuesday. On the same day, WHO's Emergency Committee said Covid-19 remained a Public Health Emergency of International Concern — its highest level of alert, first declared on January 20, 2020 — amid rising cases, ongoing viral mutation and increasing pressure on already overstretched health systems. In a statement, the committee, which is made up of independent experts, highlighted challenges to the ongoing global Covid-19 response, including a drop-off in testing and spotty genome sequencing, raising the question of just how accurately any nation might reasonably be able to monitor BA.5. Official data dramatically undercount the true number of infections in the US, epidemiologists say, leaving the nation with a critical blind spot as the most transmissible coronavirus variant yet takes hold. Some experts think there could be as many as 1 million new infections every day in the broader US population — 10 times higher than the official count.

COMMENTARY: America Has Two Law Enforcement Standards

COMMENTARY

ASSAULT WEAPONS ARE WEAPONS OF/FOR WAR By Jesse Jackson, National Political Writer

I

n the United States, 20 million assault rifles are in private hands, and nearly 400 million guns of all sorts. In the first 190 days of this year, Americans have suffered 320 mass shootings, more than one a day. Highland Park, Illinois, Uvalde, Texas, Chattanooga, Tennessee – the list is endless. Sixty-two people were shot and 10 killed in Chicago on the same holiday weekend that the Highland Park massacre took place, without garnering nearly as much attention. Assault weapons are weapons of war, designed to kill opposing troops in large numbers by allowing a fusillade of bullets to be fired by one gun. They are useless in hunting deer. They create chaos on our streets, enabling the criminal or the insane to outgun the police. America suffers over 45,000 deaths by shooting a year. Japan – recently stunned when a former prime minister was shot – experiences fewer than 10 gun deaths a year. Seventy-nine percent of homicides in America involve a gun; 4 percent in the UK. No advanced industrial country abides with the mass private ownership of guns that America has, much less the private ownership of assault weapons. In Japan, there are 377,000 firearms in private hands (about 0.3 per 100 people). In the U.S., there are 393 million, about 120 for every 100 people. No other advanced country suffers the number of casualties that America experiences from mass shootings. The two are not unconnected. Republicans have turned sensible gun control into a partisan issue. They stand for guns – and against any

AR-15 with pop-up sights and reflex sight. (Dreamstime) meaningful restrictions. They brandish assault weapons in their political ads. Recently, Texas Republican Party activists booed its Republican senator, John Cronyn, for supporting symbolic gun reform legislation in the wake of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers. Republicans passed a platform that opposed legislation that would merely lower the minimum age to buy assault weapons from 18 to 21, arguing that Texans under 21 are “most likely to be victims of violent crime and thus most likely to need to defend themselves.” These “law and order” Republicans believe that vigilantes armed with assault weapons, not police, provide protection. Law does make a difference. Australia, like the U.S., was originally a settler colony, with a wild west and

cowboys who prided themselves on their self-reliance. In 1996 to 1997, after a mass shooting in Port Arthur, Tasmania, that killed 35, a center-right coalition government in Sydney passed and enforced the National Firearms Agreement. It strictly restricted gun ownership, required registration of all guns in private hands, a permit for new firearm purchases, and a ban on automatic and semi-automatic rifles. It also established a mandatory buyback program for designated weapons, collecting and destroying 650,000 guns – an estimated 20 percent of all firearms in private hands. The laws made a difference. By 2011, suicides were down by more than one-half, and homicides by 42 percent. An in-depth study by the Rand Corporation in 2021 noted that these

www.StyleMagazine.com

were declining before the law was passed so not all the decline can be attributed to the law. Rand did conclude, however, that “the strongest evidence is consistent with the claim that the NFA caused reductions in firearm suicides, mass shootings, and female homicide victimization.” The decision overturned a DC law banning the private ownership of handguns in the home. Even the conservative judges in Heller recognized the right of the state to regulate the use, ownership, and sale of guns. Only this year – again in a decision utterly divorced from the text of the Constitution or the history of gun regulations, did the right-wing majority – now a gang of six – overturn a 100-year-old New York state statute limiting the carrying of guns in public. But the activist right-wing judges now driving the Supreme Court are not the biggest obstacle to sensible gun control, the inactive and dysfunctional Congress is. Surely it is long past time to remove those who are standing in the way and force the Congress to act to protect the security and general welfare of its citizens.

Commentary By Dr. John E. Warren, Publisher, The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint for StyleMagazine.com

T

he recent shootings by law enforcement of individuals being pursued by police have reminded many people of color of what appears to be an unwritten universal double standard. One would think that after the George Floyd murder and the subsequent murder of a young Black man following a traffic stop in the state of Minnesota, that something might have been learned. We just witnessed a young Black man in Akron, Ohio being shot more than 60 times by police following a pursuit for what allegedly was a traffic violation. We can still remember another Black man who was shot because he had a cell phone in his hand when confronted by police. The list is almost endless, from California to Chicago to North Carolina, from Missouri, and from New York City where a Black man was choked to death over some cigarettes. Now let's look at the “White” side of law enforcement, starting with the most recent Fourth of July mass

shooting in Illinois. An 18 to 20-yearold white male kills seven people and wounds 31 others. When police checkup with him, he is taken into custody without a shot being fired. Another 18 to 20-year-old in Buffalo, New York mass murders ten African Americans at the Tops Supermarket and he is arrested without a shot being fired. Let us not forget Rittenhouse, who killed two people with an assault weapon, also was arrested “alive”, was tried in Minnesota, and was acquitted, becoming a national hero of the Extreme Right. It appears no matter how much we (Blacks and those whites who join us) march and protest, it makes no

difference to law enforcement around this country. This same shoot-to-kill mentality, if the alleged lawbreaker is Black or Brown, appears to be universal. It appears that the solution to this problem cannot be legislated because we can’t make laws to change the hearts of men. But we must not let each of these incidents become just a matter of business when dealing with white folks, but continued acts of murder if one is a person of color. We know there are no federal murder laws, but we can mobilize within each

state where these “murders” occur and take action against those who do not prosecute these murderers of unarmed people to the fullest extent of the law. This year’s Fourth of July mass murder is a testament to the hypocrisy of a Congress, both House and Senate, that refuses to outlaw assault weapons and enacts weak and meaningless gun laws as pacification of an aggrieved nation. A midterm election is coming up. We have homework to do if we are going to make a difference.

STATE: Uvalde School Shooting Surveilance Video Fuels Scrutiny Over Police Delays By Elizabeth Wolfe, Travis Caldwell, Rosa Flores, Rosalina Nieves and Dakin Andone, CNN.com / StyleMagazine.com

urveillance video of law enforcement’s response during the Uvalde school massacre gives the clearest account yet of how officers waited outside an elementary classroom as the gunman continued firing, killing 21 students and teachers on May 24. The video -- published by the Austin American-Statesman newspaper Tuesday, in a decision that enraged families of the victims who had yet to see the footage themselves -- shows responding officers approaching the door of the classroom within minutes of the shooter entering, yet retreating after the gunman opened fire at them. After more than an hour -- with the hallway growing more crowded with officers from different agencies -- the doorway of the classroom was breached by law enforcement and the gunman shot and killed. The release of the footage was particularly painful for the victims’ families, including a group of parents and relatives who said they were blindsided Tuesday while in Washington, DC, to speak with elected officials. They expected to see the footage Sunday, when the Texas House Committee investigating the shooting planned to show it to the families before releasing it to the public. “We get blindsided by a leak,” said Angel Garza, whose 10-year-old daughter, Amerie Jo, was killed. “Who do you think you are to release footage like that of our children who can’t even speak for themselves, but you want to go ahead and air their final moments to the entire world? What makes you think that’s OK?” The video, lightly edited by the American-Statesman to blur at least one child’s identity and to remove the sound of children screaming, still leaves some questions unanswered -- in particular, why the law enforcement response was so delayed. “They just didn’t act. They just didn’t move,” Uvalde County Commissioner Ronald Garza said on CNN’s “New Day” on Wednesday. “I just don’t know what was going through those policemen’s minds that tragic day, but ... there was just no action on their part.” The video also does not answer the question of “who, if anybody, was in charge,” state Sen. Roland Gutierrez (D) told CNN on Tuesday. “Even if we see 77 minutes in a hallway, it’s not going to tell us who

was in charge or who should have been in charge. And I think that’s the sad statement of what happened on May 24 ... that no one was in charge.” Gutierrez criticized the Texas Department of Public Safety for having a multitude of officers on site yet not taking control of the situation. The state agency has consistently pointed to Pedro “Pete” Arredondo, the Uvalde school district police chief, as the on-scene commander during the attack. Arredondo was placed on leave as school district police chief in June and has not given substantial public statements about his decision-making that day despite intense public scrutiny, though he told the Texas Tribune that he

did not consider himself to be the leader on the scene. On Tuesday, the Uvalde City Council accepted his resignation from his position as councilman. Regardless of who was in charge, each officer had a duty to act, North Richland Hills Police Department Chief Jimmy Perdue told CNN on Wednesday. Perdue is president of the Texas Police Chief’s Association. “I believe that the training is very clear on what we are supposed to do,” Perdue said. “Even a single officer has the responsibility to go stop the killing. And that did not happen.”

ffective this week, Tejal Patel will serve as Executive Officer of Communications for the Houston Independent School District. Patel is the first Indian American to lead the district’s communications department in the nearly 100-year history of HISD. “I am confident Tejal Patel will be outstanding as the Executive Officer of Communications.,” said Superintendent Millard House II. “She brings a breadth of experience to her new role, and I am pleased to be a part of this historic moment. As I have said many times before, it is vital that our leadership team reflects the diversity of our school district and our broader community.” Patel will report directly to Chief Engagement Officer Max Moll. Patel will be tasked with conveying Superintendent House’s fiveyear strategic plan to the various HISD internal and external stakeholders through a multipronged approach. As Executive Officer of Communications, she will oversee media relations, stra-

tegic communications, multimedia, translations, and the newly created digital m e d i a d e p a r tment. “As we work to reimagine how we engage with HISD families, stakeholders, and the community at-large, I am excited to have Tejal in this role. The breadth of her experience, leadership skills, and commitment to her work will be instrumental in improving the district’s communications,” said Max Moll, Chief of Engagement. “I am thrilled to take on this new role and ensure our communications are a two-way conversation between HISD, its families, and our various communities. Transparency and trust

are key to building that foundation,” said Patel. “I look forward to the opportunity to share how Superintendent House’s strategic plan charts the path forward for HISD to become the school district that provides its students with the outstanding educational opportunities that they need and deserve.” Patel is a first-generation American, native Texan, and the first in her family to graduate from college. Over the course of her nearly 20-year career in journalism and communications, she has built a reputation as a trusted spokesperson and expert in storytelling and narrative building. Before joining HISD in March 2021

as the General Manager of Media Relations, she served as the Deputy Press Secretary for Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. During her tenure in that role, Patel shepherded messaging around the “Stay Home, Work Safe” Order, mask mandates and COVID-19 testing during the pandemic in 2020 to rolling out vaccination opportunities and the winter freeze in 2021. She played a key role in increasing trust between media outlets and the Mayor’s Office of Communications. Patel has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston, Girls Empowerment Network, Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, Make-aWish Foundation, and served on the Houston2036 Taskforce. Patel is a proud Alief ISD alum who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Journalism.

he Las Vegas Raiders have hired Sandra Douglass Morgan as team president, making her the first Black woman in that position for an NFL team. In a news conference at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas announcing the hiring, Morgan was asked what it meant for her to make league history. “I have been the first in other positions that I’ve held whether it be city attorney or Gaming Control board,” Morgan said. “I definitely never want to be the last and I want to get to the point obviously where there is no more firsts...I would tip my hat to all of the ... prior women that were leaders and visionaries, if I could be an inspiration or help or open doors for any other women or girl out there then that’s an incredible accomplishment for me. “The importance and effect of it is not lost on me. I know that sports is a male-dominated industry, just as gaming was, and we need to continue to break down these barriers.” Raiders owner Mark Davis touted her experience, integrity and passion for the Las Vegas community. “From the moment I met Sandra, I knew she was a force to be reck-

provide a reason for his termination. However, in a statement sent via text message to the Review-Journal, Ventrelle said he was fired as retaliation for informing the league of alleged complaints claiming Davis created a hostile work environment as well as other potential misconduct, which he says Davis dismissed. When asked at the time by the Review-Journal about Ventrelle’s allegations, Davis said he was aware of them and wouldn’t comment. The NFL said it would review the allegations. Within the past year, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden resigned after

reports emerged of him using homophobic, racist and misogynistic language in emails while he worked as an ESPN analyst. He apologized, saying he “never meant to hurt anyone.” Morgan addressed organizational issues in her letter, the Las Vegas newspaper reported. “Let me be clear -- I am not here to avoid or sidestep problems or concerns that need to be addressed,” the Review-Journal quoted her as writing. “I’ve given long and thoughtful consideration to joining you, and I’ve done so because I believe in the promise of the Raiders. Most importantly, I believe in your core values of integrity, community, and commitment to excellence. I will expect you to embody those and to hold me accountable to doing the same.” Historical firsts are not new for the Raiders. The Raiders became the first team in the modern NFL to hire a Black head coach when they hired Art Shell in 1989. In 1997, with the hiring of Amy Trask, they became the first team to hire a woman as chief executive.

AUTO: Plug and Charge: As Easy as Topping Off a Tank GM Makes Commitment to Multiple Public Networks For EV Charging By Stylemagazine.com – Newswire

G

M is committed to delivering a simplified, efficient and accessible EV charging experience. They're on a journey to make EV charging as easy as topping off a tank with gas. The company is taking its next step on that journey and expanding its existing collaboration with EVgo to add a new Plug and Charge service to the Ultium Charge 360 ecosystem. GM is the first OEM to introduce a Plug and Charge feature to the company’s existing and future EVs that is designed to work on multiple, public networks in North America. Plug and Charge streamlines the EV charging process for customers. Drivers with an EVgo account, active OnStar connected services and the GM brand app

for their vehicle (myChevrolet, myCadillac, myGMC) must perform a one-time activation of Plug and Charge within the app. Once activated, they can simply plug in the charging cable and energy will start to flow to their vehicle — no additional steps needed. With recent launch, Plug and Charge is available now at nearly all EVgo DC fast-charging stations. In time, GM plans to broaden the service to include all compatible DC fast-charging stations across the Ultium Charge 360 network. Plug and Charge works with all current and upcoming GM EVs built on the Ultium Platform, including the GMC HUMMER EV and Cadillac LYRIQ. It also works with Chevrolet Bolt EVs and

Bolt EUVs with DC fast-charging capability — two of the most affordable EVs available in the U.S. today. The company recognizes charging is a crucial pillar to EV ownership. Plug and Charge builds on GM’s previously announced commitment to invest nearly $750 million in charging infrastructure through the Ultium Charge 360 ecosystem. Ultium Charge 360 is a holistic charging approach that integrates charging networks, GM vehicle mobile apps and other products and services to simplify the overall charging experience for EV owners, fleets and dealers. Through Ultium Charge 360, GM EV drivers have access to more than 100,000 charge points in the U.S. and Canada. In the last year, GM has added EVGateway, EVPassport, EVCS and NoodoeEV to its expanded network of 11 Ultium Charge 360 charging station operators. GM is also continuing its efforts to expand charging access. The company

ART: MFA Houston and TJM New York Present – Beauty and Ritual: Judaica From The Jewish Museum, New York Partnership Will Establish Ongoing Presence For Jewish Art In Houston

Houston TEXANS Unveil New Battle Red Helmet To Be Worn During 2022 Season

By Kathy Coleman, ARTS Editor – StyleMagazine.com • Newswire

O

n last Sunday July 10, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston opened the exhibition Beauty and Ritual: Judaica from The Jewish Museum, New York, the first step in an ongoing partnership, which will bring exceptional objects from the Jewish Museum to Houston over a period of years. The exhibition will be on view through September 18, 2022. In early 2023, ongoing presentations centered on objects on loan from the Jewish Museum will begin when The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Gallery for Judaica opens at the MFAH. The Herzstein Gallery is a centerpiece of the World Faiths Initiative at the MFAH, a program of interfaith projects based on the museum’s collections and exhibitions and funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. Commented Gary Tinterow, Director, Margaret Alkek Williams Chair, of the MFAH: “The first significant piece of Judaica to enter the Museum’s collection was the Montefiore Mainz Mahzor, in 2018. Calligraphed and illustrated around 1310 in Mainz, some 150 years before Gutenberg would print his Bible in that same medieval town, the Mahzor is one of the earliest surviving illuminated Jewish prayer books from Central Europe. Now, with this significant partnership with The Jewish

Museum, New York, and access to their extraordinary collections, we are able to amplify the cultural and artistic history of Judaism, first with this summer’s exhibition, Beauty and Ritual, and, beginning early next year, with presentations in the newly endowed, permanent Judaica gallery. I am enormously grateful to the Jewish Museum, New York, for their partnership, and to The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Foundation, in making possible this permanent presence for Judaica and historic Jewish traditions at the MFAH.” The exhibition Beauty and Ritual: Judaica from The

Jewish Museum, New York will be the first of a series of presentations at the MFAH from the collection of The Jewish Museum, New York. On view July 10 to September 18, 2022, the exhibition will feature nearly 140 objects from the Jewish Museum's world-renowned collection, examining Jewish ceremonial objects from antiquity to the present and exploring their artistic, ritualistic, and cultural significance. The objects presented derive from Jewish communities throughout the world, ranging from Central Asia to North

Africa and Western Europe. The exhibition also explores how artists— from different backgrounds—and Jewish communities have creatively adapted traditional forms of Judaica by utilizing a rich array of styles, materials, and techniques, and drawing on broader cultures. Three thematic galleries explore the ceremonial objects used for Jewish practice in the synagogue, in the home and beyond. “The Art of the Synagogue: Adorning the Torah” features ceremonial objects used within the synagogue for the purpose of beautifying and protecting the Torah, the central ritual text of Judaism. One Torah ark, intended for housing the Torah, is a monumental 18th-century pinewood enclosure from Bavaria. The ark echoes the colorful, painted decorations of houses of that region, resembling an entrance to a home, and, at 10 feet in height, nearly at the same scale. The Jewish Museum is an art museum committed to illuminating the complexity and vibrancy of Jewish culture for a global audience.

he Houston Texans unveiled a new Battle Red Helmet that will be worn during the 2022 Season. Paying homage to the one of the franchise’s three iconic colors, the team will don the new helmet when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Battle Red Day presented by Mattress Firm on Nov. 3 at NRG Stadium. Texans fans will get their first look at the new Battle Red Helmet when players wear them during Training Camp practice on Back Together Saturday on July 30. The helmets will also be available for purchase at the Houston Texans Team Shop later this fall and online at Fanatics.com starting July 25. Additionally, one lucky fan will have the opportunity to win one of the first Battle Red Helmets by completing the contest form and the winner will be announced on SportsRadio 610’s Payne & Pendergast on Monday, July 25. “We’re thrilled to debut our new Battle Red Helmet as we continue to evolve as an organization,” Texans President Greg Grissom said. “We’ve consistently shown we’re not afraid to try new things, so we jumped at the chance to design an alternate helmet that will complement our uniforms, especially the Battle Red jersey. The start of Training Camp is on the horizon and we’re excited that our fans will have the opportunity to get a sneak peek of the new helmet in person soon.” Since the team’s inception, the Texans have exclusively worn Deep Steel Blue helmets. Last season, the NFL announced that teams would be permitted to wear a second helmet in 2022. Battle Red Helmets will be available for fans to purchase this fall.
